Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

You can’t go to South Korea for shopping and not stop in Seoul – the country’s premier destination for all things fashion, electronics, street food and skincare. In this shopper’s paradise of a city, you’ll find traditional Korean items perfect for souvenirs to tech gadgets not yet available on Australia’s shores.

Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

  • Myeongdong (shopping district)
  • Dongdaemun Market (shopping center)
  • Cheongdam-dong (luxury boutique area)
  • Pyeonghwa (wholesale market)

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

1. bibimbap.

As one of Korea's standout dishes, bibimbap is a tasty concoction of meat, vegetables, egg, and rice. Soy sauce, chili paste, garlic, and sesame oil all add flavor to this amazingly colorful dish found everywhere in Korea.

Kimchi is hailed as a nutritional powerhouse - packing a healthy punch of nutrients, vitamins, and beneficial bacteria that makes it one of the world's healthiest superfoods. But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavor and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savory pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu, and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef, or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed, or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favorite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef, and beyond. Try out these foods on our 8 day South Korea Real Food Adventure.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in South Korea

Michael, our tour guide, was patient, friendly, and flexible with different age travelers and physical abilities by adjusting the activities for them. The Best of Korea tour's itinerary was very full. I think many of us enjoyed the itinerary and the experiences we had. I, particularly, enjoyed the various transportation methods which added to the experience. The War Memorial Hall of Korea museum is a big museum and had very important history. Most of us needed more time. I think this activity could of come at the beginning of the tour for us to have better knowledge of Korean history. On the tour's last day, after the museum, most of us thought there was going to be a group dinner. The tours I have been in the past had end of the tour dinner to say good bye and show our appreciation to the tour guide. It's nice to have a closure after spending a week together. We were disappointed that the day just ended after returning to the hotel. After the DMZ visit, we had a very nice lunch at a well known restaurant. This time could of have been a good opportunity to say good bye but I think due to limited time, food came out late, we didn't linger.
One of the most memorable and enjoyable tour I have done . Our tour Director was excellent , made sure everyone are safe, remind each day and stops of our cellphones, hats, bags , shopped items and etc.. has a very positive attitude, very knowledgable in what he does and he is funny too. "Michael, our tour guide, was patient, friendly, and flexible with different age travelers and physical abilities by adjusting the activities for them.

"Fantastic introduction to Korean food and culture. This trip had a great mix of walking, eating and chillin. If you’re an expert in Korean food, this may not be the best tour since it’s an intro with slightly more western tastes in mind, but we did try exotic things like murder hornet soju! Haha everything was good and the group was awesome. Everyone got along well, and the guide Michelle made the tour go very smoothly. Some days were >20k steps so def being comfortable walking shoes. One thing to remember is that the dmz visit is not a part of the tour, and in general the dmz is not available on Mondays… so if adding on, you’d have to stay until Tuesday or do it Sunday before tour starts.

The Summer Holiday Tour in North Korea

7 nights in North Korea + Beijing-Pyongyang travel time

Discover North Korea’s rarely visited East coast from the industrial centre of Hamhung to the hiking trails of Mt. Kumgang From 1495 EUR per person

Please apply by 17th June, 2024 .

Sun, sea, and sand… Yes, that’s right!

North Korea may not be known as a summer get-away, or indeed known for its beaches, but we think a summer package holiday in North Korea is far too underrated, and one of the best holiday destinations to give you one of the most unforgettable trips of a lifetime. Plus, you won’t have to worry about tourists crowding the beaches!

Our Summer Holiday Tour is an annual favourite which gives you the highlights of North Korea – and more. This includes exploring the capital Pyongyang and historic Kaesong on the Korean Demilitarised Zone on the North-South Korea border, while also taking time to see the country's rarely visited east coast.

On the east coast, you will see the port city of Wonsan and the industrial centre of Hamhung , while having the chance to explore the hiking trails in Mt Kumgang . The weather is beautiful at this time of year – warm during the day but not too hot, making it one of the best holiday destinations this summer!

Scroll down for an overview of our Summer Holiday tour package highlights, tour itinerary, transport options , DPRK tourist visa information, and extra add-ons.

End of Tour

Transport | Train and Flights to North Korea (Standard)

This tour travels between Beijing-Pyongyang by train each way in a hard-sleeper carriage (6 bunks per compartment). The train journey takes 24 hours with a transfer at the city of Dandong. One-way or round-trip flights are also available. The flight takes around 90 minutes. For an extra 199 EUR you can upgrade to a one-way flight. A round-trip ticket costs an additional 299 EUR.

Visit the DPRK border town of Sinuiju

If you're heading back to Beijing by train this option lets you get off for an overnight in Dongrim before the next day's tour of Sinuiju — the border city with China. Spend an extra 24 hours in the DPRK seeing the sites of North Pyongan province. You will then continue on through to Beijing.

Visit Dandong — the Chinese gateway to the DPRK

Instead of immediately returning to Beijing when your tour ends you can take some extra time to visit this fascinating border city, which directly faces the DPRK town of Sinuiju, but lies on the Chinese side of the Yalu River. We offer both one-night and two-night fully guided extensions that take in all the sights of Dandong, with a special North Korea theme.

Upgrade to your own room

All hotel rooms on our all-inclusive group tours feature twin beds, and will be shared. If you'd like a room to yourself then you can upgrade for an extra 40 EUR per night.

Insurance (7 to 9 nights)

We're unable to take you on one of our tours if you do not have medical insurance that covers the destination in question. Issues of isolation and infrastructure where we go mean it would be irresponsible of us to do so. We can provide this if you do not have it — or you can use your own.

What is / is not included?

  • Return train Beijing – Pyongyang – Beijing with transfers at Dandong
  • All meals on the tour apart from the meals on the train
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Koryo Tours tour leader
  • Two local Korean guides, and a driver per group
  • All transportation in North Korea

NOT INCLUDED

  • Optional Air Koryo flights (one-way: 199 EUR; round-trip: 299EUR)
  • Optional single room supplement (40 EUR per night)

  • Optional activities such as the lift up the Juche Tower (5 EUR) or a visit to the funfair (approx. 2 EUR entrance fee per person)
  • Entry tickets for special events if applicable – for example Pyongyang Circus (approx. 20 EUR per person)
  • Meals include a complimentary beer and water, but you will need to purchase extra drinks if needed
  • Spending money for souvenirs
  • Sinuiju Extension: RMB 50 for the bus across the bridge to Dandong to be paid on the spot to the local guides

Groups will be in the experienced hands of two or three local Korean guides and an experienced Koryo Tours tour leader . Please note that when on tour your day-to-day itinerary may differ slightly to what is advertised above. Your tour leader will ensure, however, that everything available at the time is covered, and replacement options are provided where needed. We will also add in extras when there is time (such as a visit to a local bar or amusement park).

We visit North Korea regularly so know all the best places to go, and how to make the most of your days there to guarantee the experience of a lifetime. After the tour, we will send out a list of all participants' emails so you can keep in touch, swap photos etc. If you do not wish to be on this list then please let us know.

2024 Busan International Rock Festival announces first lineup

Busan International Rock Festival

(Facbook/Busan International Rock Festival)

The city of Busan has unveiled the initial lineup for the “2024 Busan International Rock Festival,” set to take place from October 4 to 6 at Samnak Ecological Park.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this year’s festival promises an impressive variety of global and local talent.

The first wave of performers announced includes 22 acts, headlined by notable artists such as the UK rock band Kasabian, renowned British singer-songwriter Anne-Marie, and popular Korean acts Jannabi and Guckkasten.

Kasabian, returning to Korea after a decade, and Anne-Marie, adored by Korean fans and often referred to as “our sister,” are among the key highlights. The lineup also features Thai singer-songwriter Phum Viphurit, celebrating his 10th anniversary, and other beloved artists like The Cross and Lee Sang-eun.

For more details and updates, including the second lineup announcement in June, visit the official Busan International Rock Festival website at www.busanrockfestival.com .

South Korean, Chinese and Japanese Leaders Discuss Thorny Topics and Ways to Boost Cooperation

The Japanese and South Korean leaders have raised sensitive topics like Taiwan, North Korea and the South China Sea as well as ways to boost cooperation, when they individually met China’s premier

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The Japanese and South Korean leaders raised sensitive topics like Taiwan, North Korea and the South China Sea as well as ways to boost cooperation when they individually met China's premier Sunday on the eve of a fuller trilateral meeting.

It was unclear how serious discussions the three leaders had on those thorny issues, which are not among the official agenda items for Monday's three-way gathering in Seoul, the first of its kind in more than four years.

No major announcement is expected from the meeting, but observers say that just resuming the highest-level talks among the three Northeast Asian neighbors is a good sign and suggests they are intent on improving relations. Their trilateral meeting was supposed to happen annually but it had stalled since the last one in December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and complex ties among the three countries.

After meeting Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters that he expressed serious concerns about the situations in the South China Sea, Hong Kong and China's northwestern Xinjiang region. He said Japan is closely monitoring developments on self-governed Taiwan.

He referred to China's military assertiveness in the South China Sea, clampdowns of pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong and human rights abuses against minorities in Xinjiang. Last week, China also launched a large military exercise around Taiwan to show its anger over the inauguration of the island's new president who refuses to accept its insistence that Taiwan is part of China.

During a separate meeting with Li, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, on his part, asked China, as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, to contribute to promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula, while speaking about North Korea’s nuclear program and its deepening military ties with Russia, according to Yoon's office.

Yoon’s office said Yoon and Kishida in their separate meeting expressed worries about North Korea’s nuclear program and agreed to strengthen their cooperation with the United States.

South Korea, Japan and the U.S. have long urged China — North Korea’s major ally and economic pipeline — to use its leverage to persuade the North to abandon its nuclear ambitions. But China is suspected of avoiding fully enforcing U.N. sanctions on North Korea and sending clandestine aid shipments to help its impoverished neighbor stay afloat.

The three leaders also discussed how to bolster economic and other cooperation.

Yoon and Li agreed to launch a new South Korean-Chinese dialogue channel involving senior diplomats and defense officials in mid-June. They also agreed to restart negotiations to expand the free trade agreement and reactivate dormant bodies on personnel exchanges, investments and other issues, according to Yoon’s office.

Chinese state media reported Li told Yoon that the two countries should safeguard the stability of their deeply intertwined industrial and supply chains and resist turning economic and trade issues into political and security-related issues.

Kishida said he and Li reaffirmed Japan and China will seek progress on various areas to promote mutually beneficial relations. Kishida and Yoon also said they agreed to further strengthen ties, which have warmed significantly since last year following an earlier setback over issues related to Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean officials said that a joint statement after Monday’s trilateral meeting will cover the leaders’ discussion on cooperation in areas like people-to-people exchanges, climate change, trade, health issues, technology and disaster responses.

The three Asian nations are important trading partners and their cooperation is key to promoting regional peace and prosperity. They together make up about 25% of global gross domestic product. But the three countries have been repeatedly embroiled in bitter disputes over a range of historical and diplomatic issues originating from Japan’s wartime atrocities. China’s rise and a U.S. push reinforce its Asian alliances have also significantly impacted their three-way ties in recent years.

Experts say South Korea, China and Japan now share a need to improve ties. South Korea and Japan want better ties with China because it is their biggest trading partner. China, for its part, likely believes a further strengthening of the South Korea-Japan-U.S. cooperation would hurt its national interests.

China, meanwhile, has always sent its premier, the country’s No. 2 official, to the trilateral leaders’ meeting since its first session in 2008. Observers say China earlier argued that under then-collective leadership, its premier was chiefly in charge of economic affairs and best suited to attend the meeting, which largely focuses on economic issues.

But they say China may face more demands for President Xi Jinping to attend because he has concentrated power in his hands and defied the norms of collective leadership.

Primavera Sound 2024: the essential sets to see

From first-time headliners proving their mettle to reuniting legends, experimental artists making new moves in Europe to beloved faves at the top of their game

korea tours 2024

Since it launched in 2001, Primavera Sound has garnered a rock-solid reputation for putting together some of the finest line-ups of indie, alternative, electronic and hip-hop around. Although the festival has popped up in different cities and countries around the world, its Barcelona outpost is still the flagship event of the Primavera canon and the 2024 edition is stuffed with acts that make it another unmissable year. From first-time headliners proving their mettle to reuniting legends, experimental artists making new moves in Europe to beloved faves at the top of their game, here’s NME ’s pick of who to catch in Barcelona this year.

Who: Eclectic pop auteur levelling up to the top tier of festival bills What to expect: This is the start of SZA ’s big European festival headline run, with Glastonbury , BST Hyde Park and more to follow. Her bill-topping set at Primavera should bring the magnetic confidence and electric stage presence – plus those killer vocals that have become her calling card – she showed on her recent arena tour to Parc del Fòrum to prove her chops as one of the best in the game. When: 12am, June 1, Santander

  • Bikini Kill

Who: Riot grrrl pioneers making their long-awaited return to Europe What to expect: Bikini Kill were due to rip up stages across the continent in 2022, but had to scrap the European leg of their tour due to COVID and “other circumstances”. Although the band have said they have no plans to make new music, their back catalogue (sadly) remains more than relevant today, offering the perfect chance to exorcise your frustrations with the world at their set. When: 11pm, June 1, Pull&Bear

Who: French electronic music wizards back with a world-beating new album What to expect: Justice have long been renowned for their ferocious, mind-blowing live sets and, as their Coachella 2024 appearance showed, their new live set-up only strengthens that reputation. Blinding, bright lights that strobe into the sky and over the crowd create an immersive experience that, somehow, makes the tunes sound even bigger and more powerful than before. When: 1:45am, May 30, Estrella Damm

Who: Iconic reunited hip-hop duo comprised of Pusha T and No Malice What to expect: Individually, Pusha T and No Malice pack a lot of bite, with both stars having carved out their own distinctive strongholds in hip-hop since Clipse dissolved in 2010. Put them back together – as they did when they reunited last year – and that becomes ever more potent, promising an unmissable Primavera moment. When: 12:40am, May 31, Amazon Music

Who: One of the most exciting rock bands in South Korea right now What to expect: Experimental rock with pop hooks that will keep whirling round your brain for days. At home in Korea, Silica Gel have been steadily rising through the ranks, bolstered by three unpredictable, exhilarating albums. Last year’s ‘Power Andre 99’ spans 18 tracks but keeps you on your toes the entire time, masterfully weaving through expansive instrumental adventures (the epic ‘MachineboyGong’), soft-focus indie (‘Andre99’) and rousing rockers (‘No Pain’). This is the band’s first performance outside of Asia, but if there’s any justice, it will be just the start of Silica Gel’s path to world domination. When: 6pm, May 31, Amazon Music

Who: Genre-hopping singer-songwriter with the Midas touch What to expect: Last year’s ‘Fountain Baby’ album – her second so far – reinforced Amaarae ’s standing as a boundaryless talent, effortlessly hopping from sound to sound, genre to genre and making them all sound inimitably her own in the process. As such, her set at Primavera should be an eclectic, enthralling experience that will transport the audience through a dazzling spectrum of music. When: 9:45pm, May 30, Amazon Music

  • Troye Sivan

Who: Pop fave kicking off his ‘Something To Give Each Other’ tour What to expect: Big pop hits and a lot of cheeky fun. It’s been a while since Troye Sivan performed beyond bitesize promo appearances last year, but armed with his brilliant third album, ‘Something To Give Each Other’, the Australian star’s return is set to be glorious. If the Spanish sun doesn’t get you sweaty, Sivan will. When: 8:30pm, May 31, Santander

Who: Indie rockers who tiptoe between fuzzy thrills and soft and sweet melodies What to expect: The songs of Chicago’s Slow Pulp are like dreamy spells that make everything feel that little bit more bearable and brighter. Expect that magic to only grow in person, turning Parc del Forum into a radiant sphere of indie joy. When: 6pm, June 1, Plentitude

Who: The most in-demand DJ of the moment on the verge of (finally) releasing her debut album What to expect: Peggy Gou is scheduled to take the Amazon Music stage to the end of the night on her allotted day with a massive two-hour set. That means two hours of her perfectly curating one of Primavera’s biggest dance parties, from banging remixes and tracks that will get you moving, to expertly deployed moments to give you the brief breather you need before the next ramp up to dance heaven. When: 2:15am, May 30, Amazon Music

Who: Enigmatic figure slowly making his way back to music What to expect: Last year, Jai Paul made his first-ever live appearances, over a decade after first whipping up a frenzy with ‘BTSTU’. The reports from those shows were nothing short of glowing, with Paul using the sets to reclaim his leaked demos from ‘Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones)’ and share fun, surprise covers. Expect more of the same as he reignites his well-deserved comeback journey for 2024. When: 10:55pm, May 31, Cupra

Archer Aviation finds a partner to commercialize eVTOL travel in Korea, demo flights coming in Q4

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer Archer Aviation is continuing to lay the global groundwork for commercial operations in a new territory: South Korea. The next-generation aircraft specialist has announced a new partnership with Korea’s leading mobility-as-a-service company, KaKaoMobility, to participate in the country’s Grand Challenge and bring eVTOL travel to the region quickly.

Archer Aviation  ($ACHR) is one of the more popular eVTOL developers in a growing segment of emissions-free air travel that continues to wield momentum as a global player in the space. With airworthiness certification from the FAA already in place and investments from big names like United, Stellantis, and even the US Air Force , Archer has (literally) taken to the skies and expanded its brand outward beyond its headquarters in Santa Clara, California.

In the fall of 2023, mere days after announcing a deal to launch eVTOL air taxi services across the United Arab Emirates , Archer Aviation completed a maiden voyage in its flagship Midnight aircraft in its native US.

As Archer continues the Midnight’s “for credit” testing process to achieve commercial operation authorization with the FAA this year, it has continued to secure partnerships in other countries to bring advanced air mobility (AAM) to the masses. Since the initial eVTOL flight, Archer has signed deals to bring air taxi operations to India while most recently expanding its plans in the UAE in a new deal worth an estimated $500 million .

Today, Archer shared additional expansion plans in Asia, securing a fresh partnership in South Korea to help the country reach its ambitious plans to bring commercial eVTOL operations to the region by 2026. With a payment plan already in place, those efforts are expected to begin later this year.

eVTOL Korea

Archer and KaKaoMobility to help bring eVTOLs to Korea

Per an update from Archer Aviation early this morning, it has signed an agreement with KaKaoMobility to jointly participate in the K-UAM Grand Challenge – a public-private demonstration held in the country to garner public support for eVTOL technology.

As part of the agreement, KaKaoMobility has agreed to pay Archer $7 million in 2024 to begin developing and establishing commercial eVTOL operations in Korea, followed by a second payment installation expected to follow in early 2025. The agreement also entitles KaKaoMobility to the purchase of up to 50 Archer Midnight eVTOLs worth approximately $250 million. Pre-delivery payments are also expected in 2025 following the Grand Challenge.

However, before then, Archer and KaKaoMobility intend to use the 2024 Grand Challenge as a public stage to demonstrate how eVTOL aircraft can transform daily commutes in Korea. The demonstrations will take place beside South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), which is hosting the event and has vowed to help commercialize urban air mobility (UAM) by the mid-2020s. Archer’s chief commercial officer, Nikhil Goel, elaborated:

Archer is expanding its international launch strategy to South Korea through this landmark partnership between Archer Aviation and KakaoMobility. Together, we are committed to revolutionizing transportation with Archer’s eVTOL aircraft, ushering in a future of cleaner, faster, and more efficient travel between and within Korean cities.

Looking ahead, KaKaoMobility intends to own and operate Archer’s eVTOL technology in South Korea and offer air taxi rides to its 30 million current app users as early as 2026. Service is expected to begin in the capital of Seoul, where, according to Archer, the average commuter spends roughly 90 minutes per day stuck in road traffic.

Archer says it will work alongside KaKaoMobility with a goal to conduct public demonstration flights in Korea by late 2024. The K-UAM Grand Challenge is currently accepting applicants and will allow five to demo their technology this coming December.
