Local travel

Many taxi firms are disabled friendly and it is worth shopping around for a good price. In Kirklees, for example, some firms have signed up to a charter regarding their services to older people. You may also be eligible for a discount e.g. in Kirklees some taxis offer a discount if you have an Excel card.

Community transport

Many areas have some form of community transport for vulnerable or isolated people. Sometimes this is door to door or on routes in areas not readily served by commercial transport. Some charge is usually made to cover the costs of the service. Very often the drivers are volunteers and sometimes it is part of an outreach or befriending service.

Concessions, passes, blue badges

You may be eligible for these. Check with a travel centre, Metro and or your local council.

Travel training/travel buddies

Many local authorities run travel training schemes for people with disabilities and particular vulnerabilities to help them use public transport. Sometimes they employ travel buddies to help people get used to using local transport independently. This can do much to broaden someone’s travel horizons and help to reduce worries and isolation. Sometimes our services can offer ‘graduated exposure’ which is a behavioural intervention for managing anxieties and phobias.

Lift Shares Car sharing scheme for West Yorkshire.

Access Bus Access Bus is a door-to-door service for people in West Yorkshire who have difficulty using other forms of public transport. You will need to register to use the service and all trips must be booked in advance. The service uses modern low-floor accessible buses. Access Bus vehicles are specially designed to carry at least two passengers travelling in wheelchairs. There is a £3 single fare for using an Access Bus, however, if you have a concessionary bus pass you can travel free of charge. Trips are mainly to local shops and operate during the day.

Transport aids/assistive technology If you are disabled or elderly you may be able to hire a scooter, wheelchairs or walking aid from your council. In recent years there have been breakthroughs in assistive technology like GPS watches and other tracking devices which enable people to raise an alarm if they are in difficulties whilst out about or have strayed from areas they would normally stay within. These are particularly useful for people with learning disabilities or dementia and they help give families peace of mind.

Coping with public transport A service user from the Richmond Fellowship has produced some excellent advice to help people who suffer from anxiety use public transport (page 2).

Blue Assist Blue Assist is a national scheme aimed at helping anyone with communication issues. This could be someone with Autism, an acute mental health problem, a hidden impairment, learning disability, Dementia, or speech and language issues.

They use a simple card system for people which can inform others they have an issue and to pose simple questions which will help them get what they want.

The government has introduced new rules on travelling and out of Kirklees as concerns over the Indian variant of coronavirus increase.

People are being encouraged to avoid entering or leaving Kirklees for all but essential travel .

The area currently has the fourth-highest Covid infection rate in England, according to Public Health England, and has been identified as an area where the strain that first originated in India is spreading fastest.

The government does not name the Indian variant, instead referring to it as "the new Covid-19 variant" with Kirklees deemed to be one of the areas where it is spreading the fastest.

To get the latest email updates from ExaminerLive, click here .

The government says on its website: "The new COVID-19 variant spreads more easily from person to person. To help stop the spread, you should take particular caution when meeting anyone outside your household or support bubble."

It goes on to issue the following advice:

  • Meet outside rather than inside where possible
  • Keep 2 metres apart from people that you don’t live with (unless you have formed a support bubble with them), this includes friends and family you don’t live with
  • Avoid travelling in and out of affected areas unless it is essential, for example for work (if you cannot work from home) or education

This is advice rather than a hard and fast rule but the government has said people should try to stick to the new advice "wherever possible".

Enter your postcode for the latest Covid-19 data for your area

Other advice includes:

  • Getting tested twice a week for free and isolate if you are positive
  • Continuing to work from home if you can
  • Getting vaccinated when you are offered it, and encourage others to do so as well

You should get tested for Covid-19 by arranging to have a PCR test if you have symptoms of coronavirus; participating in surge testing and by getting regular rapid tests - even if you are not showing any symptoms of Covid-19.

The government also reiterated that you should "self-isolate immediately if you have symptoms or a positive test results for Covid-19".

The other areas where extra measures are now in place are; Bedford Borough Council, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, Burnley Borough Council, Leicester City Council, London Borough of Hounslow and North Tyneside Council.

Forget Me Not’s Colour Run raises a Record-Beating £48,000

Refugee week: celebration of resilience, “our home “- huddersfield refugee groups and creative projects to celebrate refugee week 2024 at huddersfield piazza, angie’s disco orchestra in festival take-over of huddersfield town hall, one week until the kirkwood memory walk 2024, £2 million investment in active travel for kirklees.

£2 Million Investment in Active Travel for Kirklees

By Leah Conway  – KLTV Contributor

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority has received £10.053 million from the Government’s Active Travel Fund.

Kirklees is set to benefit from £2 million of this fund.

The fund intends to create more space for people to travel by bike and on foot. It also aims to ease the pressure on public transport and relieve congestion.

What will happen in Kirklees?

In Kirklees, the money will be allocated to schemes for improving cycling and walking in towns across Kirklees. It will also be part of Kirklees Council’s emerging, district-wide ‘Active Travel Agenda’.

Where will the investment go?

Prospective areas of improvement to benefit from the fund include the A62 Leeds Road in Huddersfield, walking and cycling access to the Spen Valley Greenway in and around Cleckheaton, and improved connections to Dewsbury Railway Station.

In addition, the council is also looking into the possibility of creating an ‘Active travel neighbourhood’ in an area of Huddersfield. The goal of which is to improve links to the wider walking and cycling network in the town.

Councillors Comments

Cllr Peter McBride Cabinet Member for Regeneration said: “This funding could make a significant difference to how we travel in future; it is no secret that as a council we are committed to making it safer and easier for people to travel by bike or on foot.

“However, we also recognise how important it is to take into account the views of our local communities, and businesses when planning changes to our highways, and as such we will be consulting fully on our plans for this funding before any changes are implemented.”

Cllr Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Greener Kirklees said: “This funding along with all the other investment we are making in improving active travel in Kirklees is essential to encouraging more people to leave their cars at home more often.

“By making [fewer] journeys by car, we can all contribute to reducing our carbon footprint, improve air quality and help tackle the climate emergency.

Cllr Rob Walker, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are looking to deliver ambitious, wide-ranging cycling and walking measures across Kirklees so that we can support more people to take shorter journeys by bike or on foot.

“During this pandemic, we have seen how important it is to have more space to move around our towns and villages safely and how this can help create more capacity on the public transport network.”
