The Kerrang! Tour 2016, review: Two very diverse strands of rock meet

kerrang tour 2016

If Kerrang! was once the bible of hardcore heavy metal, it’s now a magazine with a broader congregation and the 2016 version of its ever-popular tour paid homage to two very diverse strands of rock.

Led by an exceedingly sweary, possibly genuinely confrontational (“I’ll come down there and bash your face in”) tiny ball of ginger trouble, the fast, furious and frenetic Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes were raw but tight. Carter delivered their sole ballad, Beautiful Death, stood in the centre of the crowd but the purple-faced I Hate You was the real expression of their core values.

In contrast, Canadian headliners Sum 41 were perky pop-punk personified. Deryck Whibley (formerly Paris Hilton’s beau and Mr Avril Lavigne), whose alcohol addiction caused kidney and liver organ failure last year, was an emaciated fireball. He took gleeful potshots at Donald Trump but his band took no chances and, to the audience’s delight, plumped for a greatest hits set.

This was a celebration rather than an examination, but despite the irresistible Fat Lip and Handle This, the formula struggled to sustain a 100-minute set, while a cover of Queen’s We Will Rock You suggested ideas are not their strong point. When they pushed themselves and tinkered with the formula on the cascading Skumfuk and the gigantic We’re All To Blame, they were a more thrilling, less predictable proposition entirely.

Kerrang! Tour 2016 Headliner and Dates Announced - TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

Our annual trek around the UK returns in February 2016. Find out who is topping the bill here!

The Kerrang! Tour is back for 2016, and we’re incredibly excited to reveal the headliner… SUM 41!

Fans may remember that the pop-punk heroes had to pull out of the 2012 Kerrang! Tour when Deryck Whibley suffered a back injury. Now, following the frontman’s return to health after his recent troubles, and with the band’s original guitarist Dave ‘Brown Sound’ Baksh back in the fold, Sum 41 are officially back and raring to go.

Deryck said: “We’re really excited to be back on tour. After a three-year break, we're honoured that our first tour back is the Kerrang! Tour 2016 in the UK. We’ve been locked away in the studio making the new Sum 41 record, which we will be out later in the year 2016 .”

They’ll headline next year’s tour, which kicks off on 10th February 2016 in Dublin and finishes up in London on 19th February. You can see the full list of dates below.

Watch this space for more band announcements, and make sure you pick up this week’s Kerrang! Magazine for an interview with Deryck about his return.

The afternoon gets off to a rough start as we bump into a panicky ROAM on the snowy streets of Glasgow, who have a broken kick pedal and have very little time to find a new one. Argh.

kerrang tour 2016

Inside the venue, Biters frontman Tuk does his best to woo Kerrang! with a Kiss-themed Valentine’s note before the Big Day tomorrow. It’s kinda sweet, if you like that sort of thing. Check out his romantic side here .

Clearly still feeling the love, Biters invite two members of the crowd up onstage tonight to chug pints of beer, though it doesn’t end especially well as one particularly rowdy fan lobs his into the crowd. It nearly hits us, but it’s fine, because beer.

Instrument malfunctions all taken care of, ROAM have no problems winning over this evening’s audience, revealing what they’ve been getting up to backstage with dressing room buddies Biters before the set (which we can’t repeat) and kicking off a huge wall of death. Pop-punk walls of death aren’t quite the same as the usual ones, but it’s effective all the same. Job done.

Tonight’s massive venue does Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes a lot of favours, as fans whizz past him on the floor during the 45-second Jackals, while guitarist Dean shreds on top of the audience for Devil Inside Me. It’s actually exhausting watching this every night – we’re stumped how they keep it up.

kerrang tour 2016

After spending the day on mandatory vocal rest, Sum 41’s Deryck looks and sounds even more excited to be in Glasgow tonight, with an opening one-two-three of Over My Head (Better Off Dead), Motivation and The Hell Song, and another killer (no filler) set, jam-packed with hits. So relieved we’ve got a day off tomorrow before Newcastle…
