A player with a fully charged scarf

In Journey , each player has a scarf that they can charge up with magic to fly.

Growing and Charging [ ]

The scarf grows by collecting the 21 glowing symbols throughout the game. To charge the scarf, stand near other pieces of cloth such as:

  • Cloth fragments
  • Long flowing pieces of cloth ("cloth seaweed")
  • Cloth "jellyfish"
  • Cloth "dolphins"

You can also power up by wearing the White Robe , swimming in the magic water in The Temple area, or by riding the shark/whale in The Temple area. The Summit area also provides seemingly unlimited flight power.

Destruction [ ]

The scarf will be cut in half if you are caught by one of the guardians in The Tunnels or The Mountain areas. In The Mountain area, your scarf will drain energy as you walk through the snowstorm. It will shorten and shorten as you reach the end of the area. Getting hit too often by Guardians can reduce the scarf's lenght to Zero. Collecting Glowing Symbols or completing the area will restore the scarf to one segment.

Second Playthroughs [ ]

You will have to recollect the glowing symbols on subsequent playthroughs, as they do not carry over. If you earn and wear the White Robe , while you still have to collect the symbols to extend your scarf, your starting scarf will be longer, its charge will deplete more slowly, and it will recharge itself upon landing.

  • 1 White Robe
  • 2 The Traveler
  • 3 Glowing symbols

The scarf is one of the most iconic aspects of Journey .

  • 2 Lengthening
  • 3 Refilling

Usage [ edit | edit source ]

Lengthening [ edit | edit source ], refilling [ edit | edit source ], in fanon [ edit | edit source ].

Unless they're interpreted as people IN cloaks, instead of living cloth people, Wayfarers will often grab things with their scarves , or with the tips of their cloaks .

Fan characters may have uniquely patterned scarves.

Notes [ edit | edit source ]

The scarf has a tendency to get kinked or twisted.

The pattern on the scarf resembles a Symbol .

If you skip the first loose symbol , you can still have a "getting scarf" animation near the center of the hub .

It's possible to get through Chapter Select without getting any symbols, and thus without having a scarf. However, as soon as you enter the Broken Bridge level , the game will give you a scarf. Similarly, if you lose your entire scarf to War Machines in the Underground , you will have a short scarf after entering Tower .

Wander winter's wonderland with an official Journey-themed scarf

by Owen S. Good

journey game scarf

This is a video game novelty so obvious, one must wonder why it took this long for Sony to offer it. But at last, fans of Journey can buy an official scarf reminiscent of the iconic one worn by the game’s traveler.

Just in time for winter, the $30 scarf is adorned with runes from the game — but it will not glow or allow the wearer to float through the air to solve platforming puzzles. Sorry about that.

Journey launched in 2012 and finished third in Polygon’s game of the year awards that year. The pensive, quiet adventure from thatgamecompany arrived on PlayStation 4 this summer . Anyone who bought Journey on PS3 has it for free on the new console, too (and vice versa).

  • straight in front of the starting area
  • forward and slightly to the right of the 1st
  • go right, over the Mirage Flower, and continue directly away from the mountain. Quite a distance away is a small set of ruined columns and the creature is in front of those. There is a hidden symbol on top of one of the columns here also.
  • coming back over the mirage flower, go past the hidden glyph and take a left at the three stones in a row going up a dune. You will come to a tower with a ruined building. The creature is next to the ruined building
  • with the previous creature area behind you, turn right and head over the dune (there should be a pod of the larger cloth creature (dolphins) waiting nearby. You should see another hidden glyph a short distance away. The creature is waiting to be released just beyond that glyph
  • from the tower area with the 4th creature just head towards the tower. In fact, you should be able to head towards the mountain anywhere in the desert to reach this area - a large tower. As you start to climb this, you'll pass these in the smaller part of the tower. You may need to do this one to get the boost up.
  • Once you have made it to the top of the tower and used the standing stone, the grate will up and a pod of dolphin cloths will be released. You can't miss this one and continue.
Note: The achievement notification will not appear until you end the level; if you did not find all the creatures, you will not receive the notification. If you have, the achievement will appear on the screen as normal.

Tip: If you CAN NOT find any partners to play with, try to change your steam download region. You can play on different servers/regions and hopefully, you'll meet more partners. Go to the path below and select a new steam download region (e.x UK or the US): Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region Once you set the new download region you have to close the game and also restart your steam launcher. Note: After completing this achievement, don't forget to set your download region back to default one, because you may have problems downloading/updating the games in the future.

Minka's Bear Passion

The site for (teddy) bear lovers.

Hello, I’m Misha the bear cub and I was the mascot of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. I was chosen because there are a lot of nice bears like me in Russia. I got to travel all around the world to promote the Olympic Games. I even travel into space with two cosmonauts.

journey game scarf

The 1980 Moscow Olympics took place during the peak of the Cold War. The games did produce the first official Olympic mascot ‘Misha’, the bear cub (also known as ‘Mischka’).

In Russian, ‘Misha’ and ‘Mischka’ are forms of the Russian male name ‘Mikhail’. The bear is also an animal that is traditionally used to symbolise Russia and the Soviet Union. Misha was designed by Victor Chizhnikov – a Russian children’s book illustrator. In 1977, the committee organizing the Olympics held a contest for the best illustration of a bear. The judges chose Victor Chizhikov’s design depicting a smiling bear cub wearing a blue- black- yellow- green- red (colours of the Olympic rings) belt, with a golden buckle shaped like the five rings. Misha was confirmed as an official mascot on December 19th, 1977.

Misha is the first mascot of a sporting event to achieve large-scale commercial success as merchandise. The Misha doll was used extensively during the opening and closing ceremonies, had a TV animated cartoon and appeared on several merchandise products. Alternative Names [ ]

  • Shinies, Shiny Things

Some players refer to symbols as glyphs; such use is discouraged on this Wiki to avoid confusion with Ancient Glyphs (visual elements that reveal parts of the story line, also commonly called "glyphs").

Basic information [ ]

Symbols appear everywhere in the game:

  • On the chest of the Wayfarer , and in their chirp
  • Collectible symbols and ancient glyphs to be found during the course of the game
  • Particles in the air and in the magic goo/mist (Tower and Paradise levels)
  • Small particles floating around the wayfarer when glowing with a companion or another cloth creature
  • Glowing on certain tombstones when the wayfarer approaches them
  • On your Scarf
  • Written on various pieces of architecture, glowing and otherwise

In some cases, for example on certain gravestones, symbols look worn off and barely recognizable (they still follow the familiar square pattern, but individual symbols cannot be picked out).

Some stones have clean square placeholders but no symbols on them; this is most prominent in the Tower around various shrines. Further details can be found in the Tombstone article.

Collectible symbols [ ]

Little brightly glowing symbols are hidden in various parts of the game. Those can be picked up by touching them or flying by close enough.

  • They will extend your scarf , therefore granting the ability to fly (first symbol) or extending the flying range.
  • Symbols with a shiny circle around them mean that you didn't find that symbol in previous journeys.
  • For every new Journey, you need to pick them up "again" to extend your scarf, if you want a long scarf.
  • There are guides on how to find all of them for the Trophies .
  • The locations of each symbol are also described here , and in each level-article (shown on each of the level maps).
  • Symbols you have collected will light up on a small display beneath the statue at the end of each level, as well as on a larger display in the chapter select area.
  • While the symbol is being collected, small glowing particles fly from it into the Wayfarer, recharging the scarf. This extends flying ability for a brief period of time (this feature is often exploited by speedrunners).

A collectible symbol in-game

Primary and Secondary alphabets [ ]

There are several alphabets in the game, which can be found on buildings, scarves , cloth creatures , etc.

A subset of the full alphabet, dubbed the "primary" alphabet, is used only for players, graves, and the wardrobe , implying these symbols are names or proper nouns. Whereas the rest of the alphabet is seemingly random, these 21 symbols are designed with a good amount of symmetry, making their nametags easier to identify after the credits .

Other alphabets [ ]

In addition to the primary and secondary alphabets, a third alphabet appears on one ancient glyph in the graveyard , as well as a few other murals throughout the game.

This alphabet is completely different from the first two; its symbols are more random and complex and have no defined "quadrants". A similar alphabet appears in glowing runes on the level-end statues , though it is not known whether they are intended to be part of the same alphabet.

This ancient glyph features both the standard alphabet and a different, otherwise unknown alphabet.

Player symbols [ ]

Your symbol, seen on your chest and when you chirp , will be one of the Primary symbols.

  • The symbol you see yourself using will not be the same on other players' screens.
  • During a Journey, a Companion's Symbol normally stays the same, even if you lose each other and meet later again. Though there are exceptions, see Chirp .

Most of the primary symbols have nicknames assigned to them by the community.

These names can be descriptions of their appearance, names of well-known players who used them, or simply inside jokes. Some of these names are listed below.

Some of these symbols, namely "Bucktoothed skull," "Fishing Hooks," and "Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde" are referred to by some as "red robe symbols" due to their simplicity, though any correlation between a player's symbol and robe is likely coincidence.

"Snowflake" or "Schneeflocke"

"Bucktoothed Skull"

"Collector's Item" - named for how it appears to be rare.

"Doppelganger" - named for how it appears twice at the collected symbols area in Chapter Select.

"New York, New York"

"belovedklowny" or "Klowny" - after the player Klowny

"Robot & Elf Feet"

"Scandinavia" or "Broken Symmetry"

"Stealth Fighters" or "Stealth Bombers"

"Morse Code"

"Morse Code 2"

"Monster Eyes"

"Unbroken Symmetry"

"Raised Fist"

"Fishing Hooks"

"Blinky, Pinky, Inky & Clyde" - after the Pac-Man Ghosts

"War Machines" or "Angel Wings"

"Speeding Thrones"

"Horned War Machine"

"The One That Got Away" - named for the fact that it doesn't seem to be in the game, despite being on the official playable symbols list

Glitches with symbols [ ]

Here is a video showing a glitch with the collectible symbol inside the Whale Room (Tower level):

About the symbol "alphabet" [ ]

  • The main alphabet in Journey features symbols assembled from 15 basic characters, each 3x3 pixels in size.
  • That's a whopping 13,845,841 possible symbols, though in practice only about 200 of these are found in the game's files.
  • If you would like to assemble your own symbols, a list of parts can be found here:

More trivia [ ]

  • The symbols were first named by Klowny. Including the Klowny symbol.
  • It was changed after a German player said it would be offensive in certain countries.
  • Similarly, "Monster Eyes" was originally called "Four Eyes", which could be seen as offensive.
  • Developers referred to the collectible symbols simply as "Secrets".
  • While the collectibles displayed in the level select area use the 21 "Primary" symbols, the collectibles in-game simply cycle through random characters.
  • Going back and picking up this symbol "for real" will appear to give you the symbol, but will not give you any more scarf.
  • As the wayfarer usually faces away from the camera, this brief moment is not visible to the player, but with a good camera angle it's hard to miss; the symbol is more prominent on a red robe but can observed on a white robe as well.

Paris 2024: Behind the creation of the iconic posters designed by Ugo Gattoni

Ugo Gattoni, the illustrator behind the Paris 2024 official posters

The posters were unveiled on Monday, 4 March, and will remain on display at the Musée d'Orsay over the coming days. Discover everything you need to know about the creation of the Paris 2024 posters, below.

For the first time, illustrator Ugo Gattoni has disclosed the creative process behind the posters for Paris 2024. Speaking from his studio in Ivry-sur-Seine, in the suburbs of Paris, an apartment filled with windows that sit in a white, inconspicuous building, the Parisian designer talked about the almost 2,000 hours he spent creating the colourful posters that are full of symbolism and myriad details.

The small stories behind the grand tale of Paris 2024

The project has been inherently challenging from the very beginning. Not only did the posters need to represent the next Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Paris 2024 organisers also wanted to make a difference through the project by including all the smaller stories that have developed over the history of the upcoming Games.

“I wanted to tell the story of Paris 2024,” said Joachim Roncin , director of design at Paris 2024, “so that there would be an overview of the entire project, to take sport out of the sporting arenas.”

To do that, the first point of focus is a diver in the foreground, who is watching the show unfold before his eyes in a sports arena made up of Paris’s greatest monuments: from Pont Alexandre III to an Eiffel Tower decorated with the Stade de France, and the Arc de Triomphe through which the Paris passes, there are many different references.

“I wanted the poster to tell countless things, to be full of symbols. There are many small details, they’re stories within the stories,” added Roncin.

Ugo Gattoni on the Paris 2024 posters: “I was very honoured”

Roncin had the ideal candidate in mind when it came to creating the posters: Ugo Gattoni, an illustrator whose impressive resume includes working on a project titled "Bicycle" for the Olympic Games London 2012, as well as scarf designs for the famous fashion brand Hermès. The artist is known for taking inspiration from surrealism and mythology and he specialises in large, colourful, detailed pieces.

“The first time Joachim contacted me was via the internet in June 2023, to ask me to create the official posters,” said Gattoni, sitting in an armchair in his studio. He is looking over the huge poster he created, with the shining eyes of someone who speaks with passion about his job.

The project may have been challenging and intense, but it was also been very rewarding for the artist. “I was very flattered, honoured!” he said about being asked to work on the project.

The project began with a first meeting at the Paris 2024 offices in Saint-Denis in June 2023. He received a clear brief and started right away. Even on his way back home, an idea started to formulate in his mind. And when he arrived at his house, he drew his first sketch.

“I immediately had an idea. I came home here to the studio and I already had the stadium in mind on my journey back. I wanted to make a Paris stadium. I had even already made a first sketch,” he explained, showing Olympics.com the files containing the sketches on his computer. Those initial sketches would become the drafts of the future posters for Paris 2024.

“I quickly added shadows to make it more meaningful and I pitched the idea to Joachim, who approved it."

Four months and 2,000 hours of intense work followed. Once the project was approved the artist explained he “went into detail”.

“I added buildings, changed the background, put in the shadow. I added the Tahiti wave and included Marseille,” he recalled, pointing to each element with precision.

Ugo Gattoni attended the unveiling alongside Joachim Roncin and the president of Paris 2024 Tony Estanguet

Paris 2024 posters: An exceptional poster for an exceptional event

The entirety of the posters were produced manually, without any AI assistance. From the first pencil stroke to the last splash of colour, everything was done by hand. This is why each character in the crowd is unique.

Gattoni also revealed that he continued to revise the old sketches in order to get a final result he was happy with.

“Then there are all the crowd sketches. At the time it was a bit messy, but I knew I wanted flags to be there, I wanted to put stairs here, and in the end, there you have it!" he concluded with the satisfied smile of someone who has accomplished his mission.

The designer had total creative freedom. While working to a brief and respecting the look of the Games, he still managed to maintain his own playful and joyful style.

This is why eight mascots are hidden within the posters. In fact, whatever age you are, there is something within the artwork that you will be able to enjoy.

The Paris 2024 project has been a dream come true for the illustrator. “I can’t wait to see what it looks like, to see how much people appreciate it and how much it will be circulated,” he said. “I am very happy with it.”

These exceptional posters for an exceptional event will be exhibited in a 5x4m format at the Musée d’Orsay over the coming days - an ideal opportunity for the public to appreciate all the fine details that make the artwork unique.

Where to buy the Paris 2024 posters

The posters will be available to purchase at the Musée d'Orsay and on the Paris 2024 shop website. From 5 March, they will also be made available within Paris 2024 stores and FNAC, a partner of the Paris 2024 Games. Later, they will be sold at Carrefour, another partner of Paris 2024.
