5 Incredible Wadi Rum Tours from Petra

Jordan is a country full of incredible sights, but two of the top ones are undoubtedly Petra , the lost-now-found city, and Wadi Rum, which I consider to be Mars on Earth. I think everyone who visits Jordan should see both these sights, as they’ll both leave an indelible mark on your memories from visiting Jordan.

It’s common to visit Wadi Rum after Petra; this is what I did during my first trip to Jordan in 2016. I remember the long, beautiful drive from Petra to Wadi Rum and arriving in the sprawling desert in the afternoon after a morning among the ruins of the Rose City. It’s very possible to take a Wadi Rum tour after visiting Petra, as I did.

Wadi Rum from Petra Hero

As you plan your Jordan itinerary , you might search for specific tours that take you from one site to another – from Amman to the Dead Sea, or from Petra to Wadi Rum. In this post, I’ll cover the latter: Wadi Rum tours from Petra. As you’ll see, this isn’t exactly what these tours offer, but below I’ve found the best options available to visit both Petra and then Wadi Rum. Read on to see your options to visit Wadi Rum from Petra and find the perfect one for your trip.

Table of Contents

1. Petra & Wadi Rum Day Trip from Amman

Wadi Rum from Petra - Trucks driving in Wadi Rum

This is one of the top Wadi Rum tours from Petra for travelers who want to fully discover two of Jordan’s treasures in just one day – with hotel pickup in Amman.

This 16-hour tour begins at Petra, the capital city of the ancient Nabatean kingdom and one of the New 7 Wonders of the world. Upon arrival, you’ll enter Petra through the Al-Siq, the narrow gorge that ends at the beautifully carved temple Al-Khazneh. Then, you’ll explore Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, and Pharaoh’s Castle at Petra.

After you’ve explored Petra’s highlights, you’ll head to Wadi Rum, the breathtaking desert whose towering cliffs, intimidating canyons, and miles of burning rusty sand have drawn film crews of movies like Laurence of Arabia and Rogue One. In your stop at Wadi Rum, you’ll embark on an adventurous 4×4 safari ride through the desert and visit several sites, including the Nabatean Temple.

To recover after your jeep tour, you’ll stop at a picturesque Bedouin camp for a refreshing cup of Arabic tea or coffee prepared by the locals. This unforgettable experience ends with you gazing upon a breathtaking sunset across the silky desert plains.

This tour doesn’t include entrance fees nor meals, so be sure to carry extra money to cover these expenses.

2. Day Tour to Petra & Wadi Rum from Amman

Wadi Rum from Petra - People Standing on a Rock Arch in Wadi Rum

If private tours are your thing, then this is one of the best Wadi Rum tours from Petra you’ll find. In a sense, this day tour offers the option to customize it: you can choose to include only a transfer to the spots and decide how to explore them on your own, or you can book the full package. If you choose the latter, here’s what you’ll enjoy:

Once you arrive at Petra, you’ll spend two hours with a local guide who will take you around the main sights of the Rose-Red City and tell you all about their history. Then you’ll be invited to enjoy a rich meal full of Jordan’s traditional dishes before heading to Wadi Rum.

The Wadi Rum stop includes a two-hour jeep ride with a local Bedouin driver that will take you to see the Nabataean temple and the Lawrence spring, named after the famous film Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll also visit the Red Sand Dunes, where you can climb up and enjoy the desert views, and the Khazali Canyon to see ancient rock inscriptions.

3. Petra and Wadi Rum One Day Tour from Aqaba

Wadi Rum from Petra - Looking Out from Under a Rock Arch

Many travelers choose to visit Jordan’s landmarks from Aqaba, so here’s one of the best tours to Wadi Rum and Petra that depart from the port city.

Like the tours that leave from Amman, this eight-hour tour takes you from Aqaba to Petra first. The stop at Petra lasts three hours, and visitors are free to explore the Al-Khazneh, walk among the rock-cut tombs, theatre, and discover other monuments of the ancient city.

After you’ve soaked up all the beauty of Petra, you’ll make your way back through the Siq to the visitors center, where the driver will be waiting to take you to a local restaurant. From there, you’ll head to the last stop of the tour, Wadi Rum.

Yes, you guessed right. As soon as you arrive in Wadi Rum, you’ll jump into a jeep since there’s no better way to know this desert. The jeep tour will take you to discover the canyons, cliffs, dunes, and ancient rock glyphs of Wadi Rum.

This day tour includes all your admission fees and lunch.

4. Petra & Wadi Rum One Day Tour from Aqaba

Wadi Rum from Petra - A Sand Dune and Towering Rock Formations Beyond

If you’re in Aqaba, this is another one of the Petra to Wadi Rum tours you can book.

The highlight of this tour is the amount of time you have to visit Petra. Unlike most tours that offer 3 hours, this one lets you spend 7 hours in the Red-Rose City.

During your first two hours in Petra, you’ll see the main sights with a local guide. After that, you’ll be free to revisit the spots you liked the most or discover less traditional highlights of the ancient city. If you’re up for a challenge, you can hike up to The Monastery. Also called al-Deir, it is Petra’s largest monument, and you have to climb 850 steps to discover it. Another option to visit is the Royal Tombs, a series of large mausoleums carved on the Jabal al-Khubtha.

Before heading to Wadi Rum, you’ll go to a restaurant to enjoy a rich meal and recharge your batteries. The adventure in Wadi Rum starts with a two-hour jeep tour through the desert and finishes with the view of a vibrant sunset.

The entrance fees for Petra and Wadi Rum, as well as the lunch expenses, are included.

5. Private Full-Day Aqaba Excursion to Petra and Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum from Petra - Camels Walking in Wadi Rum

Last one on the list of Wadi Rum Tours from Petra!  This is an excellent option for travelers looking for private tours to Wadi Rum and Petra from Aqaba.

Your driver will pick you up and take you to Petra, driving along the beautiful Aqaba shore. Upon arrival, a private guide will meet you and take you to Al-Siq by horse. From there, you’ll walk to the Al-Khazneh, and other attractions while your tour guide shares the history behind the Nabateans and the ancient city of Petra.

If there’s some free time left, you can climb up the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice located on the Jabal al-Madhbah, where Nabatean priests used to perform religious rituals to make sacrifices to their gods.

Once you’ve finished touring Petra, it’s time to head to the Wadi Rum Desert. There, a local Bedouin will be waiting to take you on a two-hour jeep ride where you’ll absorb the beautiful scenery. Before traveling back to Aqaba, you’ll be invited to sip mint tea and relax in a Bedouin tent.

This tour includes admissions fees to Petra and Wadi Rum, but it doesn’t include lunch expenses.

While there aren’t any specific Wadi Rum tours from Petra, as you can see it’s easy to find tours that go to Petra first and then Wadi Rum. These are a good way to tour both Wadi Rum and Petra in a single day. Have any questions about these Wadi Rum tours via Petra from Amman or Aqaba? Let me know in the comments!

Wadi Rum, nestled in the heart of Jordan, is no less than a celestial playground, where the whispers of the past meet the silence of the present. This majestic desert, also known as The Valley of the Moon, stretches beneath a canopy of azure, mesmerizing visitors with its awe-inspiring landscapes that seem sculpted by the gods themselves. Towering sandstone mountains rise dramatically from the rose-red desert floor, their rugged faces changing hues as the sun journeys across the sky.

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is a striking desert valley located in southern Jordan. It is famed for its awe-inspiring natural landscapes, which comprise towering sandstone mountains, vast sandy plains, and narrow canyons. This UNESCO World Heritage Site covers an area of 720 square kilometers and boasts a rich history that dates back to prehistoric times, evidenced by ancient petroglyphs and inscriptions found throughout the area. The region has been inhabited by many cultures over the millennia, including the Nabateans who left their mark in the form of rock carvings and temples. Today, Wadi Rum attracts adventurers and nature lovers from around the world, offering activities such as rock climbing, camel treks, and hot air balloon rides. The unique Martian-like terrain of Wadi Rum has also made it a prime location for film productions, notably serving as the backdrop for movies such as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘The Martian’. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Wadi Rum is also home to a small population of Bedouins, who have traditionally lived in the desert and today often work in tourism, providing visitors with authentic experiences and insight into their way of life.

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is an iconic desert landscape in southern Jordan, renowned for its majestic sandstone mountains and natural arches. Accommodations in Wadi Rum cater to a diversity of preferences, ranging from traditional Bedouin camps to luxury bubble tents that offer modern comforts while maintaining a connection with the desert’s natural beauty. Visitors can choose from basic tents with shared facilities for an authentic desert experience or opt for more upscale options that include private tents with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, and sometimes even private hot tubs under the stars. Many camps offer activities such as jeep tours, camel rides, rock climbing, and sandboarding, along with traditional Bedouin meals and music around a campfire. It’s essential to book accommodations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to ensure availability. Regardless of the level of comfort you choose, staying in Wadi Rum offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the desert and the rich cultural heritage of the Bedouin people.

There we will reach a large boulder in front of a massive white and red sandstone cliff where we will camp for the night. On the top of the rock are old (Nabatean era) carvings of animals including camels, gazelles, and sheep.

Distance: 15 km Time: 4 – 5 hours Physical Challenge: Easy Trail Challenge: Moderate Ascent:  290 m Descent: 320 m Waymarked: No

Bedouin Camps: Rooming on a twin-share basis. So travelers booking together will share a room.

We are running these trips during the best times of year to trek in Jordan.

Throughout the year, at the camps during the night you will want to have long pants, and a light jacket or sweatshirt.

During November, December, and February, you may also want warmer clothes like a bigger jacket, hats, gloves, and a light rain jacket.

This is a 5-day trek with each day covering 12-23+ kilometers (7.5-10.5+ miles). That is five days in a row with 3-8 hour hikes.

The first and last days (days 1 & 5) are significantly longer than the other days, each at more than 22km. Those two long days are why we set the difficulty of this tour at our highest rating of “tough.”

So you will need to be fit to be able to enjoy this hike.

Shoes The ideal shoe for this hike is light-weight hiking shoes.

If you only have big-clunky hiking boots and running/athletic shoes, you could take both and see what you prefer on the hike.

Hiking Sticks/Poles Most of this hike is on good, firm ground, so hiking sticks are not required. The vast majority of people do not use hiking sticks for this hike.

However, if you like hiking with Hiking sticks/poles, or want them just in case, feel free to bring them.

During Wilderness Camping, you should not expect to have access to electric charging.

Your first good charging opportunity will be at the Bedouin Camp in Wadi Rum on night 5. You can charge your devices there until around 10pm when the camp turns the generator off for the night.

If you want extended access to electronic devices, we recommend bringing battery packs or you can also bring solar recharging devices.

Here are some things you are not allowed to bring to Jordan: 1- Drones 2- Binoculars

Petra (Pink City)

The city of Petra, capital of the Nabataean Arabs, is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, it is Located 240 km south of the capital Amman and 120 km north of the red sea town of Aqaba, Petra the world wonder is undoubtedly Jordan s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction, and it is visited by tourists from all over the world.

It is not known precisely when Petra was built, but the city began to prosper as the capital of the Nabataean Empire from the 1st century BC, which grew rich through trade in frankincense, myrrh, and spices.

Wadi Rum also known as The Valley of the Moon is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning high or elevated .To reflect its proper Arabic pronunciation, archaeologists transcribe it as Wadi Ramm .

  • The Dead Sea

Located in the Jordan Valley, part of the Great Rift Valley that runs from East Africa to Turkey, the Dead Sea is the remains of a giant inland lake. Lake Lisan was 200 kilometers long and approximately 200 meters deeper than the current level of the Dead Sea. As it contracted, it left Lake Tiberias and the Dead Sea, which at 408 meters below sea level is the lowest point on earth.

The salt content of the sea is 20%, eight times the level of the world s oceans. This concentration contributes to the amazing buoyancy of the water and is a legacy of years of evaporation. The only life forms left in the Dead Sea are eleven species of bacteria. The waters are rich in minerals, including calcium, magnesium, bromine, iodine, and bitumen. All these have healing properties that can alleviate or ease allergies, skin rashes, bronchial irritations or glandular conditions. Visitors come from all over the world to ease or cure their conditions at the medical treatment centers at the Dead Sea. Even those suffering only from ennui can enjoy the high-quality spas in the area. In addition, due the unique depth of its location, the climate and quality of sunshine in the Dead Sea area is beneficial. Dead Sea salts and mud are known worldwide for their healthful properties.

Embarking on a journey through Jordan is akin to turning the pages of a living history book, each chapter bursting with ancient tales and natural wonders. Are you ready to set your own story amongst the dunes and ruins?

Jordan beckons with promises of adventure and enlightenment.

As of March 6, 2023, the Jordanian tapestry of experiences has been meticulously woven to immerse each traveler in a blend of Middle Eastern hospitality and wonder.

Table of Contents

Historical Marvels of Petra

Petra , the ancient Nabatean Kingdom, stands as a testament to human ingenuity and architectural mastery. Carved into the rose-red cliffs thousands of years ago, the city’s ruins offer a compelling glimpse into the past.

In its prime, Petra flourished as a bustling trading hub and cultural melting pot, reflecting influences from across the Middle East. Remarkably preserved, the Al-Khazneh (“The Treasury”) and the Monastery illustrate the sophisticated artistry and engineering of its constructors.

The city’s “Siq” and “Royal Tombs” further reaffirm Petra’s significance as an archeological treasure and a pinnacle of Jordan’s cultural heritage.

Journey Through the Siq to Al-Khazneh

Siq to Al-Khazneh

The Siq, a dramatic sandstone gorge, guides visitors towards Petra’s most iconic symbol, Al-Khazneh.

Al-Khazneh was originally built as a mausoleum and crypt at the beginning of the 1st century AD.

As the path narrows, anticipation mounts, framed by towering cliffs streaked with colors from rose-pink to deep ochre, culminating in the breathtaking view of Al-Khazneh’s façade.

Here, intricacies of Hellenistic architecture blend with Nabatean craftsmanship, revealing meticulous details that echo the grandeur of an erstwhile thriving civilization.

Exploring the Royal Tombs and Monastery

In Petra, the Royal Tombs stand as a testament to Nabatean ingenuity and their reverence for the afterlife.

  • The Urn Tomb – characterized by its massive facade and impressive interior chamber.
  • The Silk Tomb – notable for its rich, multi-colored sandstone patterns.
  • The Corinthian Tomb – amalgamating Nabatean and Roman architectural styles.
  • The Palace Tomb – distinguished by its multiple stories emulating a palatial structure.
  • Ascend to the Monastery – a challenging but rewarding trek leading to one of Petra’s most monumental structures.

This cluster of monumental tombs highlights the cross-cultural interactions that influenced Nabatean art and architecture.

The upward journey to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) rewards intrepid explorers with profound insights into the monastic life and spiritual pursuits in ancient times.

Wonders of the Wadi Rum Desert

wadi rum

Delve into a vista of breathtaking nobility within the Wadi Rum , often referred to as the “Valley of the Moon.” This expanse unveils a surreal landscape shaped by eons, where monumental rock formations rise abruptly from the rose-red sands. Under the vast desert canopy, the silence whispers tales of the ancient traders and explorers who once traversed this Martian terrain.

Venture beyond mere sightseeing; Wadi Rum invites a deeply immersive experience, bordering on metaphysical. Travellers might elect to engage in a traditional Bedouin camp stay or glide over the undulating dunes in a hot air balloon at dawn. Each activity is an opportunity to connect with the timeless essence of the desert, and to gaze upon the natural rock bridges and inscriptions, evidence of the desert’s historical and geological narrative.

Bedouin Jeep Adventures

Bedouin Jeep Adventures

Embarking on a Bedouin Jeep tour in Wadi Rum offers more than just transit—it represents an authentic venture into Bedouin culture and desert life.

Accelerate through time across ancient desert paths where history whispers around every dune.

Led by indigenous Bedouin guides, these adventures present an unparalleled exposition of Wadi Rum’s dramatic landscapes, steeped in the rich tapestry of Bedouin traditions and anecdotes that bring the desert’s history to vivid life.

The vehicles used in these excursions are traditionally open-top, offering unfettered views of the stretching vistas. Venturers can expect an adrenaline surge as they navigate the rugged terrain, imbuing them with a sense of joining a timeless caravan of explorers. Feel the wind kiss your cheeks as you uncover Wadi Rum’s secrets, from its towering cliffs to the haunting vastness of its valleys.

Under the Stars: Desert Camping

Experience the surreal tranquility of Wadi Rum by spending a night under its breathtaking starlit sky.

  • Identify the ideal campsite : Seek solace in the undulating dunes, where the terrain provides natural shelter and an unobstructed view of the cosmos.
  • Set up your desert tent : Traditional Bedouin tents, or modern camping equipment, offer a comfortable base amid the sands.
  • Prepare for the desert climate : Desert temperatures can plummet at night, so warm sleeping gear is essential for a comfortable rest.
  • Stargaze into the celestial expanse : Absorb the cosmic spectacle as the Milky Way unfolds above you, a highlight of the desert night.
  • Embrace the Bedouin lifestyle : Engage in nocturnal conversations over a campfire, sipping tea and sharing stories, thereby imbibing the local culture.

A night in Wadi Rum is a rite of passage into the desert’s mystery and vastness.

This extraordinary sojourn promises not merely rest, but an intimate communion with nature’s profound silence and eternal beauty.

The Vibrant Life of Amman

Nestled amid rolling hills, Amman stands as a beacon of urban diversity and cultural complexity. Its amphitheatric cityscape, rooted in antiquity, thrives amidst a cosmopolitan buzz. From the historic Citadel perched high, offering panoramic views which juxtapose ancient ruins against modern edifices, to the aromas of traditional Levantine dishes that waft through bustling souks – Amman pulsates with life. This city, marked by its confluence of the old and the new, entices with its museums, art galleries, and vibrant culinary scene, making it a quintessential stop in the Jordanian journey.

Culinary Delights and Souks

Jordan’s culinary landscape is an enchanting foray into flavors and traditions, where each dish narrates a story of the region’s rich history. Mansaf , the national dish of lamb cooked in a sauce of fermented dried yogurt and served with rice or bulgur, invites not just to a meal but to a cultural experience.

Succulent kebabs and mezze assortments tantalize the palate with their intricate spices and textures. These perennial favorites find their places among the myriad offerings that Jordanian cuisine proudly showcases.

Amid the conviviality of food markets, the spirited banter of vendors selling exotic spices, fresh produce, and aromatic pastries connects visitors to an authentic slice of Jordanian life. Here in these souks , the exchange goes beyond commerce; it is about meeting points of tradition, culture, and gastronomic delights.

As the day folds into evening, the souks become a symphony of sights, smells, and sounds. Enveloped by the luminous glow of shopfronts, one can indulge in the sweet taste of kunafeh , a quintessential Middle Eastern pastry layered with cheese or cream and soaked in syrup. The Johnnys questing for adventure can immerse themselves in this tapestry of sensory experiences, unrivaled in its capacity to thrill the senses.

Amman’s Ancient Citadel and Roman Theatre

The Citadel sits aloft, offering panoramic views of Amman’s sprawling metropolis. This historic site serves as a testament to the city’s ancient past.

Strategically perched atop Jebel Al Qala’a hill, Amman’s Citadel encapsulates millennia of history in its grounds. The archaeological wonders within its precincts include the iconic Temple of Hercules, Umayyad Palace complex, and the Byzantine church—each contributing a layer to the rich tapestry of Jordan’s chronicles. These landmarks tell tales of civilizations that have left indelible marks on the cultural landscape, revealing Amman’s importance throughout antiquity.

Adjacent to the Citadel lies the impressive Roman Theatre, a remnant of the city’s Roman period. With a capacity to seat about 6,000 spectators, this grand edifice is an extraordinary example of Roman architectural prowess in urban centers outside of Rome itself. Its impeccable acoustics and steeply angled seating provide insights into the entertainment practices of ancient societies.

In the throes of modern Amman, these ancient sites are vibrant cultural hubs. The Roman Theatre often hosts events and performances, bridging the ancient and contemporary worlds. Visitors are encouraged to venture into these historical realms, to not merely view the remnants of past ages, but to experience the essence of a civilization. Here, history is relived, and the echoes of bygone eras continue to resonate with those who walk through their gates.

The Refreshing Retreat to the Dead Sea

Encounter the therapeutic wonders of the world’s deepest hypersaline lake, where the density creates a natural buoyancy that allows for a remarkable and soothing floating experience. The Dead Sea , flanked by Jordan to the east and Israel to the west, provides a unique spa-like atmosphere due to its mineral-rich mud and waters, which are renowned for their healing properties.

Venturing to this compelling destination offers more than just an atypical swim; it’s akin to entering a natural wellness sanctuary. The elevated mineral content, including potassium, magnesium, and bromide, plays a pivotal role in dermatological and joint health. Moreover, the low altitude of the Dead Sea—over 400 meters below sea level—enhances oxygen-rich air circulation, augmenting the rejuvenating effects this remarkable body of water has on both mind and body.

Healing Waters and Mud Treatments

Jordan’s natural spas offer unparalleled serenity.

The Dead Sea’s healing properties are no mythological tale. The rich concentration of minerals found in its waters and mud are used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments, hailed by many as a key to youthful skin and relief from various ailments. Consequently, these natural resources have been incorporated into a variety of wellness therapies, providing relief and rejuvenation to thousands every year.

Minerals play a critical role in skin health.

At the Dead Sea, these treatments are elevated to an art form.

Guests can indulge in mud treatments that detoxify – a practice steeped in ancient wisdom. Minerals such as magnesium and potassium in the mud provide not only a soothing effect but also vital nutrients for skin rejuvenation and healing.

The best Jordan tours incorporate these natural therapies. They offer comprehensive wellness packages, ensuring participants emerge refreshed, the therapeutic virtues of their experience lingering long after the mud has been washed away. These excursions offer a blend of relaxation and healing, set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most otherworldly landscapes.

Wadi Rum Thumbnail

In Wadi Rum in the seven pillars camp You will be close to your nature Away from the requirements of urbanization, which caused us a lot of troubles You are here as created from the outset Your sight and your hearing, your mind and your feelings are completely normal This region was and still untouched by human But remained as built by the creator

Wadi Rum is a spectacularly scenic desert valley (wadi in Arabic) in southern Jordan , or valley of the moon, because of the unique landscape that nearly similar to that on the moon. This area of Jordan is quite isolated and largely inhospitable to settled life. The only permanent inhabitants are several thousand Bedouin nomads and villagers. There is no real infrastructure, leaving the area quite unspoilt. Apart from the Bedouin goat hair tents, the only structures are a few concrete shops and houses and the fort headquarters of the Desert Patrol Corps.

T E Lawrence (of Arabia) spent a significant amount of time here during the course of the British-inspired Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War (1914-1918). Fans of the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia will be familiar with the landscape, which are not so much sand dunes as it is a mass of soaring cliffs and sandstone and Granite Mountains.

Lawrence’s Spring: Just 2km (1.2 miles) south-west of the village of Rum. The spring is at the top of a short scramble – head for the fig tree! Although the pool itself is largely unprepossessing, being a stagnant puddle, the views across the desert are truly spectacular.

The Nabataean Temple: Near the Rest House in Rum Village. The surrounding area is covered in Thamudic and Kufic rock art.

Burdah Rock Bridge:

jordan petra wadi rum tours

On many tours you only view this from a distance, but it is possible to climb up to this rock bridge if you have a guide and a reasonable level of fitness. Umm Fruth Rock Bridge: A lower rock bridge which is featured on many tours and can be easily scrambled on to. Red Sand Dunes: There are various places in Wadi Rum where the white and red sands meet, but the most commonly visited is a dune sloping up alongside a jebel – a bit tough to climb up as Wadi Rum has the highest mountain in Jordan ( um arbeen ).

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: Although most people can only count five, this is an impressive rock formation near the Visitor’s centre. It is named after T E Lawrence’s book – not the other way around!

Jebel Khaz’ali: This narrow canyon contains numerous Nabataean rock carvings of people and animals. A journey to Wadi Rum is a journey to another world. A vast, silent place, timeless and starkly beautiful. Wadi Rum is one of Jordan’s main tourist attractions being the most stunning desert escape in the World.

General Activities

The genuine attraction of Wadi Rum is the desert itself, best seen by four wheel drive ( 4×4 ) ,horse and camel ride, Desert trekking & hiking tours , Some visitors only spend a few hours in the Wadi, but it’s definitely worth taking a guided trip of several days duration, staying overnight with Bedouin families or camping in the desert.

Wadi Rum Ecology

Desert science.

jordan petra wadi rum tours

The majority of Tourists who visit Wadi Rum very rarely get to see most of the desert creatures or see very few. Reason being these creatures are nocturnal and avoid the daytime sun and many of the larger creatures their numbers are very low and gradually declining. However, you are likely to encounter a variety of interesting birds, insects and reptiles if a little time is spent to look carefully.

Trees are rare in Rum and are restricted to only three types. They are Acacias, False Figs and Tamarisks. The Acacias are the most typically desert-looking tree they have flat tops, spiny and sparse branches. The plants you will see most often are short, woody shrubs scattered across the desert, which consist of four main species.

The “White Saxaul” has a stout rugged stem and grey bark growing up to (4.5-5) metres in height. It lacks large foliage type leaves in fact it‘s leaves have retrogressed as succulent branches. You will find this plant is often found in sand hills, deserts and sand ridges, where it often forms pure stands. It is a hardy tree that grows in nutritionally poor soil and tolerates drought.

This tree is in leaf all year and flowers in (May-June). The plant’s extensive root-system is useful for stabilising sandy soils. The wood is durable and heavy, it is used in general carpentry and also used as fuel it gives off good heat and burns well. These shrub types including “Jointed Anabasis” and “Hammada Salicornia provide and important food source for Bedouin goats and camels, especially in the summer months. At the best of times these animals usually enjoy the smaller succulent desert plants to feed on.

Surprisingly the sparse desert scrub harbours a variety of small birds. The most common of these is the buff coloured “Desert Lark”, but the more distinctive and most common are the black and white “Mourning Wheatear” and the “White Crowned Black Wheatear”, both of which have very striking colour patterns.

During the Summer months and wheeling across the desert scrubs and along the cliffs you are likely to see “African Rock Martins”. As well as these you may see passing flocks of “Tristrams’ Grackle”, which are members of the Starling family. The are native to the region and nest on rocky cliff faces, they measure about (25cm) long which includes a (9cm tail) with a wingspan of (45cm) and weight of (100-140g). The males have glossy iridescent black plumage with patches on the outer wing, that you can notice easily while in flight, the bill and legs are black. The females are similar but much duller, with greyish head and don’t share the glossy plumage. They are very noisy with calls that resemble a wolf-like whistle, and feed on fruit and invertebrates.

In early Spring and Autumn, Rum becomes an important flyway for birds migrating between Africa and Eastern Europe, especially for birds of prey, like “Steppe Buzzards“, “Honey Buzzards” and “Steppe Eagles“. During these months it is possible for you to see hundreds of these birds migrating in a single day.

There are Reptiles that are widespread in Rum, but do not exist in high numbers. This may be considered very fortunate by some visitors, since there are ten species of snake, two of which are very poisonous vipers. The classic sidewinder which movements leaves “S” shaped tracks indented in the sands and “Burton’s Carpet Viper”. It should be stressed, however, that bites from these snakes (or any snakes) are extremely rare; the vast majority of visitors never see them.

The reptiles most likely to be seen are Lizards, and especially Geckos and Agamas. The Blue Agama is comparatively large, growing up to (35cm) and can be seen basking on rocks or hiding in the crevices. The males in breeding condition develop an exotic blue head and upper body, which is very noticeable. Down on the sand, one common small creature is a “Black Beetle” with very long legs and frequently seen crossing areas of open sand during the daytime, where it tiptoes to keep its body off the hot ground. Other kinds of invertebrates (insects, spiders and their allies) have different strategies for keeping cool, such as making burrows and hiding under stones.

One group of famous animals that can be found frequently under stones in Rum are Scorpions. A total of eight kinds have been recorded so far, from large brown ones to small yellow ones. It is the small, yellow ones that give the most painful sting, although like snakes, very few visitors see them and ever get stung. Also common in Rum are small furry animals, especially the mouse-like gerbils, with their long back legs. They are active only at night and few visitors get a chance to see them, but their burrows are easy to spot and they make distinctive tracks across the sand.

Help  Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a very beautiful and special place, at the moment it is facing some challenging environmental problems. The growing pressure from visitors, and especially from off-road vehicles, is damaging the fragile desert ecology. There is also a problem of littering and the loss of wildlife through illegal hunting in this region.

A major conservation programme is underway to tackle these problems, including zoning schemes, organized vehicle routes, better tourist information and the creation of a team of conservation rangers to patrol the area. At the same time we need the help of all visitors to make our efforts to protect Wadi Rum successful.

If you are planning to visit this unique protected area, please follow the Rules and Regulations. Please do your utmost to respect the site in protecting nature and its people. The area was not declared a Protected Area just to conserve the landscapes and wildlife, but also to give local communities new opportunities too.

This is being done in three main ways:

The Entrance fees are shared with the local communities. A proportion of each visitor’s entrance charge is given directly to local tourism cooperatives.

Appropriate tourism development is being supported throughout the protected area, tied to protection measures that try to minimize the harmful effects of visitor pressure.Small craft and souvenir businesses are being developed with Bedouin women to generate more economic benefits from the protected area

This area of Jordan is quite isolated and largely inhospitable to settled life. The only permanent inhabitants are several thousand Bedouin nomads and villagers.
