Recent tour reviews

James Bay is a fantastic singer who gave his all in a fabulous concert at The Corn Exchange in Cambridge. There was a mix of his new songs from the 'Electric Light' album which has a raw energy and blues/rock vibe along with his famous 'Chaos And The Calm' which sent the fans wild with excitement! James seemed really happy with the reaction of the crowd and got everyone to join in with and his band and the room was filled with an awesome vibe! The stage graphics were really cool and a camera played back the audience reaction on a stage screen with what looked like fireflies in the crowd. They turned out to be phone cameras giving some magical feel to the atmosphere! He also played his version of 'Simply The Best' which he dedicated to the audience and seemed quite humbled by the audience appreciation. A genuine guy with so much talent, a must see!!

This was our 2nd time seeing James Bay in concert. Unfortunately, the 1st concert (at Radio City in NYC) was so outstanding in every way, that this one didn't really hold a candle in comparison. On the new songs, James' voice seemed almost drowned out by the instruments/back up singers. Songs from debut album were still outstanding and I wish there had been more of them. Biggest complaint was the time: only 1 hour, 10 minutes. For the money and effort that it takes to see a live show these days, the headliner really has to go longer than that. He has more material, and frankly, his fans would be thrilled with any covers (he did a Janis Joplin cover in NYC and people went wild). So there it is. I hate to leave a bad review, but perhaps this will help make future shows a bit better for other fans.

I guess since this is my fifth time seeing James Bay live, I’m officially a groupie :) He’s a phenomenal performer. Bay should never be passed off as just a pop/rock guy. He’s a great musician, his vocals fill the room, he’s got this natural swag and charm for days, and he always shows his audience how grateful he is for all the love and support. His new music is awesome, mixed in with all the great stuff from the first album... SO good. I can’t wait to see him again at the Greek in October!

James Bay Canada: The Natural North

James bay offers wilderness experiences in a pristine, cold place.

By Maria Myers

The stunning interior of the Aanischaakamikw Cree Cultural Institute in Quebec City Quebec, Canada.

Canada is known for its hockey, bacon and mild-mannered yet accommodating people. All stereotypes aside, the country’s wilderness is its best asset.

But if you aren’t a wilderness expert or an experienced mountaineer these vase expanses of unkempt Canadian territory have been out of reach of the general public.

Though this isn’t Alaska , I can just picture another Christopher McCandless attempting to “tame the wilderness” with little to no background knowledge, getting themselves into a predicament that at best requires expensive emergency evacuation procedures, at worst the loss of life.

The new activities and ecotourism opportunities now set up in the Eeyou Istchee/ Baie-James region allow tourists (and emergency responders) to bypass all the rescue inconveniences. website

Making the Unknown Accessible

Fortunately, the Canadian government is working on expanding its touristic horizons and has pumped $300,000 into promoting the Eeyou Istchee (the Land of the People) and Baie-James (or James Bay) region in the North of Quebec. This is meant to stimulate job creation, increase visitor numbers and tourism spending in the area.

Frédérique Brais-Chaput

Frédérique Brais-Chaput, the marketing agent for the joint Eeyou Itschee Baie-James tourism promoter, let me know they’re prepared for the influx of company as they’ve been working on developing the tourist industry for several years.

“It goes without saying that both Aboriginal (the Crees) and non-Aboriginal communities are ready: each city and community has at least one hotel, restaurant, and the necessary services to refuel, as well as a multitude of activities,” she said.

Authentic Experiences

Depending on the season there is a vast array of activities and exceptional lodging, especially for the traveler inclined for the outdoors. The many hiking and biking trails will lead to the heart of the boreal forests or the ideal lakeside views.

I hope you have panoramic picture settings on your phone, though any camera will produce a quality shot. It’s hard to mess up raw beauty.

aurora borealis

Boat tours along the Maquatua River and James Bay during the Fall and Spring months with Cree guides from the Wemindji community are breathtaking and informative.

In Ms. Brais-Chaput’s words, “While telling you the story of their land, [the tour guides] let you explore the islands of James Bay, where you can observe the fauna and flora, take a walk on these rocky massifs and contemplate the vastness of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James.”

Cree Culture

As briefly mentioned above the main Native American group of the North is the Cree, and their culture is at the heart of the James Bay experience. If traveling during the summer months, it is highly recommended that one visits Mistissini, Wemindji, or Chisasibi to witness and even participate in the traditional Pow Wow, celebrating new and old connections among people.

Features of the event include traditional songs, drums, dances, and clothing. The Crees are spread out between nine communities with traditional values focusing on sustainable hunting, trapping, and fishing.

feb 5 james bay Wemindji Pow wow AM

If you’re one of those travelers that like to be as informed as possible definitely visit Aanischaaukamikw , the Cree Cultural Institute in Quebec City before making your way North to between the 49 th and 55 th parallels (James Bay territory).

The Cree inspired architecture alone with its light wood and earthy interior will insight you to visit their variable land and culture. The building was designed with the purposes of preservation, conservation, and knowledge transfer.

Accommodations

After action-packed days spend your nights at Nuuchimi Wiinuu , a Cree cultural camp based in Oujé-Bougoumou. You will be staying with host and accommodation owners David and Anna Bosum, individuals ready and able to share their culture, knowledge, and traditions as you make yourself comfortable in the expansive Cree tents during your stay.

Yurt and Dog sled

If tents aren’t so much your style of leisure, Les Écogites du lac Matagami might be more up your alley. Located in the heart of the boreal forest, these mix of luxury wooden cottages or yurts supply visitors with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets along the majestic Matagami lake.

If you need a break from the indoors, visitors are welcome to pitch a tent along its lengthy shoreline.

The Great Outdoors

This area of Canada is known for its expansive boreal forest coverage. Attractions Boreeales Baie-James  can take you on a dogsled trip to discover this unique habitat.

This tour ends with a night in a yurt and a potential view of the Norths’ aurora borealis. These particles released by the sun are best visible between October and March. Depending on the season, expect to see wolves, lynx, foxes bears, moose, ducks, snow geese, snowy owls, and loons – just to name a few.

feb 5 james bay Snowmobiling one of the more exciting winter activities

The winter months are the perfect time for snowmobiling as the region is known for its abundance of and quality of snow until April. Glide up and down hills while surrounded by an astonishing landscape. Additionally, enjoy caribou sighting and in the summer months, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, and hunting.

Note that when fishing or hunting the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James region has three categories. The first two are exclusive for the use of the Cree people with category 3 being open to the public. Be very aware of these categories and their boundaries beforehand.

If you would like to fish on Category 1 and 2 lands, make sure to obtain a permit with the band council of the immediate area.

feb 5 james bay Robert Bourassa Hydroelectric Facilities in Radisson

James-bay is not just for recreational sports and fantastic views. Visit the Robert Bourassa hydroelectric facilities in Radisson and discover the world’s largest underground hydroelectric power station paired with the Robert-Bourassa development.

Its 53-story height should clue you in to just how much the grandiose landscape has to offer, spiritually and economically.

Blossoming Tourism

Another product of the large chunk of money invested in this area was the creation of Into the North a web-series that sent six people to the James Bay area for a two-week road trip to experience all the area has to offer. The video may be accessed on Vimeo but snippets are featured on www.escapelikeneverbefore.com , the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James website for all your travel ins and outs.

feb 5 into the north promo canoe video

You could just watch the video but really, the only way to truly experience the North of Canada is to get out there and discover it for yourself.

Gateway to The Arctic

james bay canada tour

The rain plummeted down onto the wooden slats of the Moosonee docks as my guide Ryan Sutherland and I prepared a tarp to keep us dry in the boat. Today, we were heading out to the world’s largest seasonally ice-covered inland ocean where the mighty Moose River empties into the salty waters of James Bay.

James Bay is the southern end of the Arctic Ocean and the southernmost point of sea ice in the world each winter. Split between Ontario, Québec, and Nunavut, this unique area is brimming with life. Surrounded by the Hudson Bay Lowlands, one of the world’s most significant wetlands (and home to peat bogs, essential in storing carbon and mitigating climate change), the area provides home for unique vegetation as well as large swaths of migratory birds. Close to both inland North America and the Arctic, James Bay is home to several migratory bird sanctuaries which provide protection for the numerous species who stop in the bay on their way to and from the Arctic.

Although James Bay has low salinity levels due to the considerable volume of freshwater that empties into it from surrounding rivers, it’s still home to marine life. Seals and Beluga whales frequent these waters. Due to the relative ease of travelling to Moosonee as opposed to other communities on the bay, it’s considered to be one of the best access points. Eager for what we would potentially see in the bay, I hopped into the boat with Ryan.

Looking north toward the bay we could see pockets of rainfall blocking the view of the landscape. Upriver to the south looked relatively clear. Luckily, that’s where we were heading first. The night before we had set a gill net (a large net anchored to the river bed used to passively catch fish) in a southern channel of the Moose River. We took off towards the net, hoping that we would be rewarded with some fish for the day.

The skies suddenly opened up, pelting us with heavy rain. With no hard-top on Ryan’s boat to keep us dry we dove under the tarp to wait out the rain. Minute after minute passed until we felt the localized rainfall become lighter and lighter. Eventually silence surrounded the boat. We emerged from underneath the tarp and made our way toward the net. Pulling the rope out of the water to release the anchors, we were curious to see what might be waiting for us.

Tangled in the net were two fish, a Whitefish that Ryan decided to keep, and a small Lake Sturgeon. Designated as a species at risk in Ontario, the Southern Hudson Bay - James Bay population of Lake Sturgeon is classified under special concern. A delicacy to Cree people who have the right to keep them when caught, non-Indigenous people are not allowed to fish for Sturgeon. If they catch one, they must release it immediately.

james bay canada tour

Moose Cree First Nation and the Wildlife Conservation Society are currently working on a project, Learning From Lake Sturgeon . The project aims to improve stewardship of Sturgeon and the rivers through a mix of scientific research and Indigenous perspectives in the Moose Cree homelands. Before my arrival, Ryan took a group from the WCS out onto the river to conduct research.

Tossing the Sturgeon back into the river, Ryan and I began our journey northeast toward the bay. The thick clouds that drenched us in water earlier that morning seemed to be scattering. Still anticipating some rain and rough weather, we kept the tarp accessible as we motored north.

We passed sandbar after sandbar, coasts of sand, rock, mud, spruce and tamarack, and the river gradually began to widen until it was no more. Looking forward all we could see was the open ocean, endless kilometres of shallow, salty water leading to the Arctic.

james bay canada tour

I felt as though I could smell the salt water, which was unlikely considering the low salinity of James Bay. It was likely my mind playing a trick on me knowing that I had just entered the only open ocean accessible from Ontario’s coastline. Still, there was no denying that we had reached the ocean.

james bay canada tour

The sun peeked through the clouds opening up a small pocket of sunlight granting us visibility to the endless sea to the north. While we were content floating in the ocean, we wouldn’t be able to stay long. The tide was going out, and depending where we were on the water, there was a chance that we could get stuck on the tidal flats of the bay and have to wait until the tide came back in to return to the docks.

Making our way back towards the Moose River we checked out the northwest coastline where the river joins the bay. There, on Ship Sands Island, is the Moose River Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Established to protect the large flocks of diverse birds that use the site as a pit stop during their fall migration, it’s a must-see for birders.

While it was too early in the season to see the mesmerizing show put on by flocks of geese and the millions of other birds that stop at the sanctuary, we slowed down from afar to watch the small birds that were present on the tidal flats.

Depending on the time of year, these flats are home to resting and feeding shore birds, large numbers of water birds including green-winged teal ducks, and geese such as the snow goose.

We sat there watching the birds walk along the mud, find food, and then fly in small groups in what looked like rehearsed theatrical patterns. It was breathtakingly beautiful to see them soar over the waters of the bay.

james bay canada tour

Leaving the bird sanctuary behind, we continued upriver towards Moosonee, first stopping at the Horseshoe Islands. Home to several other species of birds, we were on the lookout. To our right we watched a flock of Sandhill Cranes in the grass. When they spotted us, they took flight, unfurling their large wings and dangling their feet as they ascended upon the sky. In the water we saw several species of duck including Diving Ducks and what appeared to be either a Green-Winged Teal duck.

The tides were still going out. New vegetation was emerging in the river indicating the low water levels. While the weather was still in our favour, it seemed like a logical time to wrap up our exploration of the bay and surrounding area. We had been successful in not only seeing the ocean, but were fortunate to see multiple different species of birds. Content with that, it was time to move on to the next item on my agenda: camping in Tidewater Provincial Park . With the clouds disappearing I was even more excited to set up camp for the night. Clear skies meant that my chances of seeing beautiful stars and potentially even the Northern Lights was growing.

james bay canada tour

Tidewater Provincial Park is one of the most unique parks in Ontario. Not only is it the northernmost operating park in the province, but it’s the only operating park where you have the potential to see marine wildlife. Run in partnership between the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks and Moose Cree First Nation, it’s the perfect spot to camp within proximity to Moosonee.

Ryan dropped me off on Charles Island (the northernmost island in Tidewater Provincial Park) where I set up my camp for the night. After cooking up a nice dinner I sat out on the rocks watching the sun set over the town of Moosonee located just across the river. As the hours passed, a brilliant array of stars presented themselves across the sky.

Looking up, lost in the beauty of the night sky, I recalled the natural wonders I was fortunate enough to see during the day. From the salty waters of James Bay to the wildlife that call this area home, the homelands of the Moose Cree people rewarded me with exceptional landscapes, wildlife viewing, and unparalleled experience. As I looked out towards the stars a feeling of overwhelming gratitude and appreciation to be here swept over me. Gentle rolling waves scattered across the sandy banks until they were nothing.

James Bay Project

In 1971, Hydro-Québec and the government of Quebec initiated the James Bay Project, a monumental hydroelectric-power development on the east coast of James Bay . ( See also Hydroelectricity in Canada .) Over the course of two phases, a total of eight generating stations were built, allowing for the pollution-free production of a significant portion of Quebec’s electricity. However, the project also profoundly disrupted the environment and the Indigenous communities living in the region, the effects of which are still being felt today.

Phase I of the project cost $13.7 billion and entailed massive diversions of water from the Eastmain , Opinaca and Caniapiscau rivers to dammed reservoirs on La Grande Rivière , increasing the average flow of La Grande Rivière from 1,700 to 3,300 m 3 /s. A tiered spillway, three times the height of Niagara Falls , was blasted from the bedrock. La Grande-2 (LG-2) power station, now known as the Robert-Bourassa, was completed in 1982 and remains North America’s largest power-generating site, measuring 483 m in length and with the capacity to produce 7,722 megawatts of electric power. The completion of LG-3 and LG-4, in February 1984 and May 1984, respectively, ended Phase I of the project.

Social and Environmental Impacts

The James Bay Project, which started without the permission of the area’s Cree and Inuit peoples, raised controversy for its effects on Indigenous communities in the area and on the environment . When the project was announced by Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa , it was contested by the Cree, who had not been notified. The dispute culminated in 1975 with the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement . ( See also Treaties with Indigenous Peoples in Canada .) In the agreement, the Cree and Inuit surrendered their land claims for $225 million, retaining special hunting and fishing rights ( see Fisheries ).

The project flooded 11,500 km 2 of wilderness land that was home to the James Bay Cree and Inuit. The village of Fort George (population 2,373), at the mouth of La Grande Rivière , was uprooted and relocated upstream. It is now called Chisasibi. The village of Eastmain now lies in a saltwater estuary, as Rivière Eastmain was reduced to a trickle. The flooding also created mercury contamination in fish , as mercury was released from rotting vegetation in the reservoirs , and contributed to the deaths of an estimated 10,000 caribou . Vast areas of wilderness were inundated (flooded) and forests were incinerated (burned) in an attempt to clear debris.

James Bay Project, Map

Phase II of the project began in 1989 with the development of LG-1 at the mouth of La Grande Rivière , where it empties into James Bay. During this second phase of the James Bay project, the Projet Grande-Baleine (Great Whale Project) and other dams on the Great Whale, Nottaway and Rupert rivers were proposed. Opposition to this phase of the project by the Cree was more vehement than it had been to Phase I. Their resistance played out in court battles with the government, as well as lobbying efforts south of the Canadian border, given that power from James Bay II was slated to be sold to the states of New York, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. For years, Cree activists lobbied American legislatures to stop participating in the James Bay projects. Eventually, they were successful: in 1992, Mario Cuomo, then-governor of New York, directed the New York Power Authority to cancel its contract with Hydro-Québec in favour of energy conservation and to purchase power from other sources. Due to the lack of a market for its hydropower, completion of the Great Whale Project was suspended indefinitely.

Together, James Bay I and II diverted and dammed more than half a dozen free-flowing rivers and flooded an area one-third the size of Belgium.

Rupert River Diversion

In 2002, the Cree and the government of Quebec signed another agreement, called the Agreement Concerning a New Relationship Between the Government of Québec and the Crees of Québec (also known as the “Paix des braves”). ( See also Treaties with Indigenous Peoples in Canada .) The agreement builds on the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and stipulates that the Cree and the government should jointly manage Cree lands, as well as share revenues generated from mining, forestry and hydroelectric resources. Following the Paix des Braves , an agreement reached in 2004 set into motion the environmental assessment for the diversion of one of Quebec’s largest rivers, the Rupert River. In November 2006 and February 2007, the estimated $4 billion project received the required approvals. The construction of generating stations (Eastmain-1-A and Sarcelle) and the diversion of the Rupert River were completed in 2012. The diversion of the Rupert River toward La Grande power station has reduced the average water flow at the mouth of the river by 50 per cent annually, which has decreased the amount of freshwater flow into Rupert Bay by 18 per cent.
