isaiah rashad tour london

Zay Isaiah Rashad doesn’t look back. Instead, he never stops moving forward. That’s why the internet has tried so hard to keep up since the Chattanooga, TN-born and Los Angeles-based artist emerged in 2012. After one seismic appearance after another throughout 2013, he formally introduced himself with 2014’s Cilvia Demo. XXL named him among its prestigious “Freshman Class,” while the project earned a rare score of 8.2 from Pitchfork. Two years later, his full-length debut, The Sun’s Tirade, bowed in the Top 20 of the Billboard Top 200 and closed out 2016 on over a dozen year-end lists, including UPROXX, L.A. Weekly, Inverse, Stereogum, Pop Matters, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, and more. In between sold out shows coast-to-coast and racking up nearly 500 million total streams, he quietly stared down his demons out of the spotlight. By the time he dove back into music, life had changed. The process switched up, so he realigned and linked up with new collaborators such as Kenny Beats. Ready to break a five-year creative silence, he returns with his second full-length album The House Is Burning [TopDawg Entertainment], including the single “LayWit Ya” [feat. Duke Deuce]. While the house is burning, Isaiah’s running forward at full speed once again.

Isaiah Rashad's 'Cilvia Demo' Tour is a Deserved Victory Lap

  • June 6, 2024
  • Kalen Murphy

It's been over a decade since Isaiah Rashad first won over fans with his debut cult classic Cilvia Demo . Being introduced to the world as an unknown signee to Top Dawg Entertainment , the Chattanooga rapper exceeded expectations and further cemented TDE's longtime "quality over quantity" philosophy.

The 14-track unpolished masterpiece packed with Southern, syrupy production and witty, introspective lyrics instantly gave a glimpse of the longevity and artistry we've seen Zay grow into today. With many hailing it as his magnum opus, Cilvia Demo has become a classic in its own right and a staple within TDE's discography. So naturally, anticipation has been through the roof as Isaiah is on the road celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the beloved project. Originally slated to be a short eight-stop tour on the West Coast, demand made a second leg of the tour possible, more than doubling the anniversary shows.

Since it began, the 'Cilvia Demo' tour has been a combination of being half encore and half a heartfelt thank you to fans, while being a whole damn good time.

The electricity of the crowd runs through the air before the rapper performs as labelmate Ray Vaughn acts as the tour's opener. For the first time in decades, the "Soliloquy" songwriter dedicates his setlist to playing the project front to back. Mixed in with longtime favorites like "RIP Kevin Miller" are deep cuts like "Tranquility" and "Banana". His level of fan interaction makes one of the tour's best moments possible, inviting fans onstage to rap "Modest" with him bar for bar.

All in all, the 'Cilvia Demo' is one of the most intimate and enjoyable tours that rap has had this year. As Isaiah has already mentioned his forthcoming album may see a release date this year, the tour serves as a nice reminder of how far the lyricist has come and reassurance on the musically unknown he may be going next.

Isaiah Rashad is hitting the road .

On Monday (July 26), the Top Dawg Entertainment artist announced “Lil Sunny’s Awesome Vacation,” a new tour that’s all set to begin in September. He used an Instagram post to announce the trek.

In the caption for the post, which includes the poster for the tour , he wrote: “Tour. Want tickets early? Text me! 423 564 5774 #THIB.”

The tour will support The House Is Burning , a new Rashad album that marks his first since 2016’s The Sun’s Tirade . Ahead of the album release date, which is this Friday, he’s released three singles with varying sounds.

The first was “ Lay Wit Ya,” a Duke Deuce-assisted song that samples Three 6 Mafia. He released that one in May, and out of all his recent drops, this particular one is the most anthemic. The next single was “Headshots (4r Da Locals),” a soulful track that sees Rashad unpack his demons. Then, there’s “Wat U Sed,” a breezy summertime anthem with features from Iamdoechii and Kal Banx.

With three standout singles at his back and about five years’ worth of experience to unpack, Rashad’s got a lot of momentum heading into his next album release, and he should bring that into his tour as well.

Speaking with Billboard this past May, Rashad, who had previously dealt with drug addiction , revealed that he had recorded this new album while he was sober. He noted that the experience initially challenged his confidence, but he got through it.

“At first it was hard, but once I had some sessions with Kenny Beats, he taught me some of the methods that he used with Keys and what he seen Young Thug do and how they get comfortable to say whatever’s on their mind,” he explained . “Then I worked with my nigga Kal Banx, and he’s on a good majority on the project — and my homie Henry that my manager put me on to. They gave me the space and time to practice that shit.”

Check out the dates for Isaiah Rashad’s new tour below.

  • Isaiah Rashad, JID, Little Simz: EVERY show I went to in 2023

Written by Jed Vine

In 2023, I was privileged enough to be able to go to ten different gigs in London, seeing many of my favourite artists on the planet for the very first time. Sampha and Jorja Smith returned from long musical hiatuses to play new material, Stormzy headlined All Point East festival in Victoria Park, and almost all of my favourite US hip-hop artists extended their tours to London. Alongside such massive names, my experiences at these shows also introduced me to some new artists, one of whom especially is beginning to grow in popularity: Jordan Ward.

Having seen Kendrick Lamar, Dave, Baby Keem and Stormzy in 2022, my archive of attended live shows has extended astronomically. To keep a record of what has been such a magical year, I have written a short piece about each gig, as well as my personal highlights. Included in this list are Isaiah Rashad, Snoop Dogg, Smino, JID, Stormzy, Jorja Smith, Sampha, Denzel Curry, Little Simz and, finally, Jordan Ward.

8 th March 2023: Isaiah Rashad @ O2 Forum Kentish Town

My first gig of the year was momentous personally – the first time I have seen my favourite artist, Isaiah Rashad. Following the release of his third studio album, The House Is Burning , in 2021, ‘Lil Sunny’s Awesome European Vacation’ tour finally brought the TDE talent to London. His setlist was filled with songs from all three of his projects, with Rashad an artist who clearly values his long-term fans, best shown by his A Capella rendition of ‘West Savannah’ from his 2013 debut, Cilvia Demo , when a fan in the crowd asked for it.

On a slightly disappointing note, Rashad was suffering with a very sore throat, and so the quality of his vocals did not reach the heights everyone at the venue knew the rapper was capable of. This fact, however, seemed to spur him on to deliver as energetic a performance as he physically could. The Chattanooga-born artist managed to bring the energy required to rap over the hard-hitting beats of ‘Shot You Down’ and ‘Lay Wit Ya’, but my favourite songs of the show were those with the chill vibe Rashad often provides successfully. While it was obviously upsetting to see my favourite artist forcing himself to perform while in pain, the supporting OMA band were fantastic, giving incredible live renditions of every beat, which certainly helped to provide the musicality Rashad was struggling to deliver himself.

As a massive admirer of every one of his songs and him as a person, there was something very special and unique about the experience I had on this night. If there was one moment which best exemplified the spectacle of this show was the performance of ‘Wat’s Wrong’ from The Sun’s Tirade ; the band playing the outstanding beat, Rashad vivibing on stage with a throat-soothing lollipop in one hand, and the crowd desperate to make up for Rashad’s lack of vocals by singing the memorable chorus as loud as we could. With over two thousand people belting out ‘FEEL LIKE I’M RUNNING IN CIRCLES’ at the top of their lungs, it was impossible not to be swept up in the fantastic atmosphere.

With Rashad recently revealing that he is in the process of creating what will be his fourth album, I really do hope I get an opportunity to see him in London again soon, and if he does return I am optimistic he will be in full health, and therefore able to do his flawless musical catalogue justice.

Setlist highlights: RIP Young, Wat’s Wrong, 4r Da Squaw, Headshots (4r Da Locals), Silkk Da Shocka

21 st March 2023: Snoop Dogg @ O2 Arena

One of the biggest names I was able to see this year was Snoop Dogg, one of the most iconic rappers to contribute to the West Coast hip-hop scene. The artist delivered a predictably laid-back performance, with the setlist of truly legendary songs a brilliant representation of quite how successful a career the artist has developed.

I was unfortunately very unwell during the supporting act, and so was not able to stay for the second half of the performance. This means that I am, sadly, unable to give a comprehensive review of the show. What I can say, however, is that seeing Snoop Dogg smoke a blunt, while on a stage covered with pole dancers, as the beat for ‘Still D.R.E.’ dropped, was an unforgettable moment. The hour or so I did stay for was full of these moments, and I stood in shock at the number of iconic, classic tracks Snoop had provided hip-hop. This seemingly endless number of songs proves quite how fundamental the rapper’s contribution to the genre has been.

(On a final note, knowing that I left before seeing ‘2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted’ live will haunt me until the end of time)

Setlist highlights: The Next Episode, Still D.R.E., Nuthin’ but a “G” Thang, Beautiful

25 th April 2023: Smino @ O2 Forum Kentish Town

Another one of my favourite artists came to the O2 Forum in Camden this year, with Smino touring for his incredible 2022 album Luv 4 Rent . As a project that ranks highly among my favourite projects in recent memory, I always expected this show to be exceptional. Unsurprisingly, it was a fantastic experience from start to finish, with Smino’s supporting act also proving to complement him so well that he himself would go on to be one of my favourite artists on the planet right now – Jordan Ward.

I had never heard of Jordan Ward before the announcement that he would be joining Smino on his ‘Louphoria’ tour, and so my first time listening to his album, FORWARD , was while waiting in line outside the venue. As remarkable on its first listen as every time I have listened to it since – and believe me, that is many, many times – Jordan Ward’s album was one of the standout releases of 2023. His infectious personality was evident on this occasion too, providing one of the most energetic performances I have ever seen. I fell in love with the performance so much, I actively made sure that I was first in line to see him at his own headline show in December. I will go into more detail about why I love his style so much later, but suffice to say he was the perfect choice to set the stage for an artist who, in my opinion, is one of the best in hip-hop right now.

If Jordan Ward’s personality was the outstanding aspect of his performance, it was Smino’s confidence that was his most noticeable quality. His aura on stage was just as striking as the standard of musicality he was able to display. In all of his albums so far, this man from St. Louis has proven himself capable of blending gorgeous vocals with a unique rapping style. He showcased the talent that has made him one of the most intriguing alternative rappers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in action. In a distinctively stylish fashion, Smino sauntered across the stage, following songs which showcased his fantastic rapping skill like ‘Flea Flicka’ and ‘Pro Freak’ with others that showed astounding melodious charm, best exemplified by the encore song, ‘Amphetamine’.

If there is anyone reading this who has not listened to this fabulous artist, I cannot recommend Smino’s music enough. Words are simply incapable of summarising quite how indescribably special his music is to me, and this show was certainly an effective presentation of his talent.

Setlist highlights: Amphetamine, Ole Ass Kendrick, Wild Irish Roses, Pro Freak, PIZANO

21 st July 2023: JID @ Eventim Apollo

When I first got tickets for JID’s ‘Forever & A Day’ tour, it was supposed to take place at the O2 Academy Brixton on the 18th of April, an event that would have fuelled a final push to revise for my last school exams. Unfortunately, an incredibly sad event took place at this venue, as people without tickets tried to gain entry to Asake’s sold out show, causing a crush that proved fatal for two people. The venue’s licence was suspended for three months, and so JID’s tour date was pushed back and moved to a new location. Finally, in July, and after my dreaded exam season had finished and I had begun to look forward to my future as a student at University College London, I was able to celebrate my academic success with the tour for one of my favourite albums of all time: JID’s The Forever Story .

I was very grateful that JID chose to bring EARTHGANG along to support him at the Eventim Apollo, as they are two of my favourite current rappers as well. Songs like ‘Bobby Boucher’ and ‘UP’ were incredibly effective at hyping up an already electric crowd of over eight thousand people. This atmosphere was not wasted in the slightest, with JID showing his ability on the microphone with brilliant song after another. What is slowly developing into a truly impeccable discography was on show, with the opening song of his set, ‘NEVER’, setting the tone for the rest of the evening – and that tone was rapping at full rapidity.

Coming from one of my favourite albums of all time, every song off The Forever Story was somehow even more impressive in person; ‘Dance Now’, ‘Raydar’, and ‘Crack Sandwich’, for example, pulled no punches whatsoever. With much of the show resulting in moshpits, indicating the excitement of the crowd, the middle section of the setlist instead served to exhibit JID’s musicality. In what was my favourite part of the evening, songs like ‘Kody Blu 31’, ‘Working Out’ and ‘Stars’ necessarily slowed the concert’s pace. This brief interlude was made a thing of the past, however, once JID re-introduced EARTHGANG to the stage, alongside fellow Dreamville member Bas, to finish the show with a roster of bangers, including ‘Down Bad’, ‘151 Rum’ and ‘Stick’.

The show for one of my all-time favourite albums was destined to be a success, but JID still managed to surpass all my expectations. A flawless album and a flawless performance from an artist who appears to be at the top of his game, and shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever.

Setlist highlights: Dance Now, NEVER, 151 Rum, Kody Blu 31, Raydar

18 th August 2023: ‘This Is What We Mean Day’: Stormzy, Sampha, Lucky Daye @ Victoria Park

I had planned to use Stormzy’s ‘This Is What We Mean Day’ as an opportunity to walk around and dip my head into a few tents, discovering some smaller artists. With that being said, with the host of talent that was set to perform on the East Stage, is it any surprise I eventually decided to post up at the front of the main stage and stay there the entire time?

Debbie’s stunning vocals serenaded me while I filled up my water, got my lunch, and prepared to wait it out near the front. Then it was the turn of Lucky Daye, an artist I had heard intermittently, mostly through his impressive features on Smino’s ‘Modennaminute’ and Ari Lennox’s ‘Boy Bye’. He certainly took the opportunity to show his skills to a UK audience with both hands, showing exceptional charisma and a truly awesome voice. After maybe half an hour of waiting came the person who I had personally been most excited to see live for the very first time, as an exceptionally talented group of musicians were followed onto the stage by the one and only Sampha.

I had no idea that just a couple of months later I would be standing in the front row of Sampha’s show in Hackney Church, and that I would get the chance to hear these songs in person again. All Points East festival took place before Sampha had even announced his new album, Lahai. If much of the rest of the crowd near the front weren’t so (justifiably) excited to see Stormzy so close up, they might have stopped talking amongst themselves. If they had done so, they may just have become as captivated as I was by performances of songs that were unreleased at the time. In August, singles that have come to be known as ‘Only’ and ‘Satellite Business’, at this point were simply a gorgeous, sonically perfect wave I allowed to wash over me.

Having seen Sampha, I was more than content with my day’s experience. The headlining act, however, was set to blow the proverbial roof off of the open-air festival. I had been worried that the forecasted heavy rain may dampen the effectiveness of Stormzy’s set, but how mistaken I proved to be. This was my fifth time seeng this heavyweight of UK rap music, but this occasion made it by far the standout. Stormzy began with some relatively relaxed cuts, with a drenched crowd singing the chorus to ‘Crown’ with such intensity I completely forgot I was soaked through. The highlight, though, was when the rapper consecutively play hard-hitting iconic tune after hard-hitting iconic tune. For so many acts, the weather would have prevented them from performing to their absolute best. Contrastingly, these conditions seemed to force Stormzy to give his absolute all on stage, resulting in a fantastic show and the culmination of a brilliant day.

Setlist highlights: Big For Your Boots, Shut Up, Cigarettes & Cush [Stormzy]; Spirit 2.0, Blood On Me [Sampha]; Only [Lucky Daye]

5 th October 2023: Jorja Smith @ HERE at Outernet

Releasing her first full-length project since 2018, Jorja Smith hosted an album launch show for falling or flying . Playing almost every song from the album, which had come out less than a week before, the unbelievable and distinguished vocals which Smith has consistently delivered were on full display.

On a personal note, I had broken my big toe playing football the day before this show, and was dreading the possibility of someone stepping backwards and causing me serious pain. I needed not worry, however, as Jorja Smith’s singing has such a smoothing effect, a porcupine would be made soft enough to warmly embrace. With fabulous renditions of all my favourite songs, especially the album’s title track, I genuinely felt like I was floating out of my protective boot.

As if this was not enough, Smith finished the setlist with some of her most iconic songs which I had never seen live before. ‘Blue Lights’, ‘Be Honest’ and ‘On My Mind’ gave the show a much earned climax, and I truly hope we don’t have to wait another five years for an album from this immensely talented vocalist.

Setlist highlights: Falling or flying, Blue Lights, Make sense, What if my heart beats faster?, On My Mind

12 th October 2023: Sampha @ St John at Hackney Church

Around a week before the release of Sampha’s second album, Lahai , I attended the first of three shows in Hackney Church. If you want an extended review of what was my favourite show of the year, you can find that here . I fell so deeply in love with Sampha’s ‘Satellite Business’ show that it brought me back to writing for this website… so you can thank him if you are enjoying this post so far!

The more I listen to Lahai , the more grateful I become that I could go to this show. Standing in the front row, in the spiritual ambience of a Hackney Church bathed in blue light, while my favourite singer on the planet sings my favourite song of the year, ‘Spirit 2.0’; that is not a memory I can see myself forgetting any time soon. Not to mention the focus on instrumentation and the brilliant supporting musicians, who helped Sampha bring to life so many magical songs from his earlier projects, Dual EP and Process . The most special part of the show for me, however, was certainly the section in which he previewed singles that would be on Lahai . Some of my most revisited singles from the new project have been ‘Dancing Circles’ and ‘Suspended’, songs I fell in love with before I even knew their title, as Sampha gave an incredibly enthralling performance that represented the perfectionist critique that must have been extended across the entire project.

The patience showed by fans since Process in 2017 has been, in my opinion, more than rewarded. Lahai is my favourite album of 2023, and this spectacular show and unique experience played a massive part in ensuring I fell in love with this project on my first and many subsequent listens.

Setlist highlights: Dancing Circles, Spirit 2.0, Suspended, (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano, Plastic 100 o C, Can’t Get Close, Satellite Business, Only [with Stormzy]

25 th October 2023: Denzel Curry @ EartH

The most incredible fact about this Denzel Curry show was the fact that the entire event was completely free of charge. Free merchandise, three free drinks at the bar, and the chance to see one of the best rappers around… all for the price of a tube ticket to Hackney. As part of the opening of Autry’s new store in London, they launched an incredible advertisement campaign, culminating in a Denzel Curry live show with free entry, in which they handed out plastic tote bags, t-shirts and stickers showing their brand.

With that being said, the show was brilliant in and of itself. Obongjayar began the show with an incredible display of energy and animation, before Curry came out to rapturous enthusiasm from the crowd. Setting the tone with the fantastic ‘Walkin’, the energy never dipped for one moment. As well as playing his more recent singles, he performed such hits as ‘DIET_’, ‘CLOUT COBAIN’ and ‘RICKY’, with his rapping seemingly growing in intensity as the show progressed.

The fans who arrived early enough to get into the venue would have been hard pressed to find a reason not to see the show as unbelievable value for money. But, even in such ridiculous circumstances, Curry did not show any signs of performing at any less that full capacity. Having been a major supporter of him for a long time, it just does not appear to be in his nature to hold back whatsoever.

Setlist highlights: BLACK BALLOONS, Walkin, RICKY, DIET_

10 th November 2023: Little Simz @ Alexandra Palace

My penultimate show of 2023 took place across London at a full-capacity Alexandra Palace, with Little Simz performing in a suit and tie for her NO THANK YOU album tour. If you would like my in depth thoughts, my blog post on this show can be found here . Spoiler warning: my opinion is rather positive indeed.

The sheer ability which Simz presents in every song she releases is just incredible. With unmatched lyricism and a cinematic style of performance comparable only to the great Kendrick Lamar, there are not many artists I would put on a par with her at the moment. Pure hip-hop heads can find dynamic and entertaining songs like ‘Gorilla’ in her discography, yet what truly sets her apart is her evident love of using live orchestral instrumentation to support her rapping. My favourite song of hers remains the intro track to her 2021 album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert . ‘Introvert’ is the best display of the striking and atmospheric instrumentation that not only makes her albums so persistently fantastic, but also makes her live performances so mesmerising. Little Simz is a truly accomplished and talented musician, and I believe she is the best rapper the UK has to offer the international scene.

Setlist highlights: Introvert, Gorilla, Angel, Woman [with Cleo Sol]

8 th December 2023: Jordan Ward @ Oslo Hackney

My final live show of 2023 gave me another chance to see Jordan Ward shine, this time on his very first European headline tour. Having been an exceptional support act for Smino back in April, I listened to Ward’s album FORWARD again. And again. And again. And then it became one of my favourite albums in recent years. The energy and expertise with which Ward approaches each track on that masterfully crafted project was more than reflected in this live show, with the artist and his musicality flourishing every time he steps onto a stage.

Now obsessed with Jordan Ward’s amazing catalogue, I was desperately excited for this show at Oslo Hackney from the moment his European tour was announced, and Ward did not disappoint. Brilliantly entertaining songs like ‘WHITE CROCS’, ‘Okok (Hibachi)’ and ‘Lil Baby Crush’ were effective in raising the energy of the sold out venue, but these songs were, in my opinion, eclipsed by those that showcased Ward’s beautiful and unique voice, such as ‘CHERIMOYA’, ‘FAMJAM4000’ and ‘MUSTARD’.

With only 350 tickets available the crowd was relatively small, but was clearly made up of loyal fans. Whether they had been supporting Jordan Ward since his very earliest releases, or have discovered him off the back of his recent tours with JID, Smino and 6LACK, or even just recognised the name after Tyler, the Creator co-signed him on a podcast – the venue was an assembly of people incredibly excited to see where this artist will go next. Jordan Ward is on the beginning of his journey, but even after just one full-length album he is one of the most captivating alternative R&B and hip-hop artists in the world. It was a pleasure to discover this artist in 2023, especially as the support to another one of my favourite artists, and the fact that I have listened to FORWARD more than any other album this year represents the value of actually going to live shows, as I am not sure when I would have been introduced to his exceptional talent had I not gone to see Smino back in April.

Setlist highlights: WHITE CROCS, CHERIMOYA, FAMJAM4000, OkOk (Hibachi)

Thank you so much to every artist who I have gone to see and written about in this post. Having already secured tickets to see 6LACK at the Eventim Apollo and Sampha at the Alexandra Palace in 2024, next year is shaping up to be pretty special once again.

ABOUT ISAIAH RASHAD:

Isaiah Rashad doesn’t look back. Just two years later, his full-length debut, The Sun’s Tirade, bowed in the Top 20 of the Billboard Top 200 and closed out 2016 on over a dozen year-end lists, including UPROXX, L.A. Weekly, Inverse, Stereogum, Pop Matters, Pigeons & Planes , Pitchfork , and more. In between sold-out shows coast-to-coast and racking up nearly 670 million total streams, he quietly stared down his demons out of the spotlight. By the time he dove back into music, life had changed. The process switched up, so he realigned and linked up with new collaborators. Breaking a five-year creative silence, he returned with his album The House Is Burning and the extended edition The House Is Burning [homies begged] to widespread critical acclaim.
