By: Waseem Patwegar | Filed Under: iOS

When the Safari Icon goes missing from the Home screen of iPhone, most users start thinking about the possibility of Safari App being accidentally deleted by them or by someone with access to their device.

However, this is never the case as Apple prevents users from deleting native apps and Safari happens to be one of the most essential native Apps that cannot be deleted from an Apple device.

In most cases, the problem of missing Safari Icon ends up being due to the Safari App being accidentally moved to another Home Screen or becoming hidden in a Folder on the App Library screen.

A less common reason for Safari Icon missing or disappearing from the Home screen on iPhone is due to the Safari App being restricted by Screen Time Settings .

How To Fix A Missing Safari Icon On iPhone Or iPad

Safari icon touchscreen

Safari is built into iOS and cannot be removed from your iPhone or iPad (except when the device has been jailbroken), but it can go missing from the home screen. If it does, it's often easy enough to locate it.

You can usually find it with the Spotlight — swipe down on the home screen and search "safari." Sometimes a user will tuck Safari into a cluttered folder where the icon can get lost. To find it, you just have to look for it.

Suppose you always launch the app from the App Library, and the Safari icon is missing. In that case, it's possible the browser was accidentally deleted from the App Library — a space where all apps are auto-organized into tidy folders. You can hide an app from the Home Screen when it's being moved to the App Library. When it's also deleted from the Library, the icon can go missing.

But what's more likely is that the restriction features in iOS are hiding Safari from you. Parental controls or Screen Time management can hide Safari from view, according to Apple .

How to bring the missing Safari icon back

Before reconfiguring the restriction features on your iPhone or iPad, try resetting the Home Screen. The Safari icon may be hidden, not the app itself. Here's what Apple  recommends.

  • Open Settings.
  • Find and tap General.
  • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone .
  • Select Reset.
  • Select Reset Home Screen Layout.
  • Select Reset Home Screen.

Resetting the Home Screen sends all app icons back to their original slots.

If you still can't see Safari, Screen Time is hiding the app from you. Screen Time is a feature that limits how much time you're allowed on a particular app. It's protected with a PIN (that's supposed to be different from the password that unlocks your iPhone or iPad).

You can either disable Screen Time entirely, or just safelist Safari.

  • Tap Screen Time.
  • Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Enter your passcode.
  • Tap Allowed Apps.
  • Enable the switch next to Safari to allow it.

To disable the feature entirely, you can also toggle off the switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions.

How to Get Safari Back on iPhone (iOS 17)

What to know.

  • Typically, if Safari has disappeared, it most likely was just removed from the Home Screen.
  • Some users are reporting that there is a glitch that appears to delete the Safari app from your iPhone altogether.
  • To get it back, you must re-download the Safari app from the App Store.

ios safari icon missing

Has your Safari app suddenly vanished into thin air? The good news is that you don't have the option to delete the native Safari app on your iPhone, so it has likely just been accidentally removed from your Home Screen. For this situation, we'll show you how to find the hidden app and move it back to your Home Screen. In rare cases, a software glitch can delete the app from your iPhone, so it will need to be re-installed. For either situation, let's cover how to get Safari back on your Home Screen.

Safari Disappeared from iPhone? Here’s How to Find It

Safari deleted re-install safari on iphone.

For most people, the missing Safari app has not been deleted, just removed from the Home Screen. Below, we'll show you how to find the app and move it back to your Home Screen by searching the App Library or by using Siri Search. Both methods will work if Safari has simply been removed from your Home Screen, so you can simply choose the option you prefer.

How to Put App Back on Home Screen Using the App Library

Here's how to add Safari to your Home Screen by searching the App Library:

iPhone Life

Your Safari app should now be added back to your Home Screen! If you're not familiar with the App Library, I recommend checking out this article on how to use the App Library . It's a great way to help you stay organized. For more nifty organization hacks and ways to use your iPhone's features, sign up for our free Tip of the Day Newsletter.

How to Add Safari to Home Screen Using Siri Search

If you prefer to avoid searching your App Library, you can also find the hidden app by using Siri Search. Here's how to add Safari to your iPhone Home Screen:

Open Spotlight Search

Adding the Safari app to your dock is optional, but it does make it more convenient to access Safari. Your dock displays up to four apps at any given time, and will appear at the bottom of each Home Screen.

If you were not able to find Safari using the solutions above, the app has likely been removed from your iPhone. Below, we'll show you how to re-download Safari from the App Store. If that fails, you may need to reset your Home Screen layout to get Safari back on your device.

Download Safari from the App Store

Here's how to re-install the Safari app on your iPhone so you can get it back on your Home Screen:

Open the App Store.

Reset Your Home Screen to Re-install Safari

If you were not able to find or re-install Safari using the steps above, this method will reset your iPhone’s Home Screen back to the factory version, which is how the Home Screen looks when setting your device up as new. Since Safari is one of the apps featured on the default Home Screen, this method will allow you to add Safari to your Home Screen.

Open the Settings app.

Hopefully, the solutions above worked, and you found adding Safari to your Home Screen to be a breeze! However, if the above solutions haven't worked, there might be a deeper issue with your device. In this case, I recommend contacting Apple Support or visiting the nearest Apple store for further assistance. If you're interested, I also recommend learning how to find your lost iPhone , even if the battery has died.

  • How do I get the Safari icon back on my iPhone?  If your Safari app was accidentally erased, you can get the app icon back on your iPhone by redownloading the Safari app from the app store. If your Safari app was simply removed from the Home Screen but not your device, you can just add the Safari icon back to your Home Screen by using the App Library.
  • Why did my Safari app disappear on my iPhone?   At the moment, it is unclear why this glitch is happening to some iPhone users. However, for the most part, if your Safari icon has disappeared, you can either redownload the app from the App Store or add it to your Home Screen again via the App Library.
  • Why can't I get Safari on my iPhone?  Sometimes people are unable to download apps and run into many other glitches and issues if their iOS is old or out of date. It's important for security reasons and for the overall smooth running of your device to keep it as up-to-date as possible. Check to see if your iPhone needs to be updated, and if so, check out this article on how to do it .

How to Add Safari app back to Home Screen on iPhone

Guide to put safari icon back to your iphone home screen or dock..

Just like Mail and Messages, Safari is a part of the app package that comes pre-installed on iOS and macOS. Safari is also the default browser on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Hence, you cannot Offload or delete Safari unlike a few other pre-loaded apps on iOS such as GarageBand, iMovie, Pages, and Keynote.

In case, Safari is missing from your iPhone then you might be looking to reinstall it. Well, you can’t reinstall Safari on iPhone because the app is already there on your iPhone or iPad. Moreover, you cannot update Safari from the App Store as it updates automatically when there is an iOS update.

That said if you can’t find Safari on your iOS device then you shouldn’t worry. The app is intact on your iPhone with all the settings and data including browsing data and logins. Possibly, Safari isn’t appearing just because you accidentally removed it from your home screen, moved it to an app folder, or disabled the app at some point in time.

Thankfully, you can easily add Safari back to the home screen and access it like before. Let’s find out how to restore Safari icon on iPhone running iOS 14 .

Thank you! There were many other sites whose only solution was to reset the home screen which, apparently, reverts it to factory settings! I did not want that. Your solution to restore the (in my case) Safari icon was fast, easy, and accurate! I knew there had to be a better way! Thank you, again!

Contrary to what we might initially fear, it’s often a small error with a simple fix; the icon has probably not vanished forever. It’s a common enough issue that many of us have found ourselves puzzled, staring at our Home Screen, unable to locate the familiar compass icon that stands for Apple’s Safari browser.

A hand holding an iPhone with a blank spot where the Safari icon should be, surrounded by other app icons

We know that Safari is integral to the iPhone experience, serving as the gateway to the internet for iOS users. Losing this icon can disrupt our browsing habits, and finding it missing can cause unnecessary stress. More often than not, the icon hasn’t been deleted—it’s just been misplaced or hidden due to a recent update, a mistaken drag-and-drop, or a restriction setting that’s been turned on accidentally. It’s important to remember that this is a solvable problem, and with a few troubleshooting steps, we can usually get the Safari icon back where it belongs.

Our first instinct might be to panic, but we need to take a pause and explore the simple solutions available. Instances like these remind us of the importance of being familiar with the quirks and features of our iPhones. Troubleshooting Safari Icon Visibility

The iPhone screen shows the Safari browser icon missing. A magnifying glass hovers over the icon, indicating troubleshooting

When the Safari icon goes missing on an iPhone, it doesn’t mean the app is deleted. It could be hidden on a different Home Screen, within a folder, or the settings might have changed. Here are steps to get it back.

Check All Folders and Screens

Sometimes, we reorganize apps without noticing. Safari could easily be tucked away in a folder. Check any folders that exist by tapping them and inspecting their contents.

Use Spotlight Search to Locate Safari

Using Spotlight Search is a quick way to determine if Safari is still on your iPhone. If the app appears in the results, it has not been deleted and is merely hidden somewhere in your layout.

Inspect Content & Privacy Restrictions

If you’ve ruled out accidental deletion or misplacement, it’s time to check if restrictions were applied.

This setting can prevent Safari from appearing on the Home Screen. If it’s disabled in the restrictions, simply toggle it back to regain visibility of the Safari icon.

These steps will cover the vast majority of scenarios when the Safari icon seems to disappear. However, if you’re still unable to locate or access Safari after following these tips, it might be worth exploring other more complex IT support routes or potentially seeking help from Apple.

Resetting Home Screen Layout

When the Safari app disappears from your iPhone, resetting your Home Screen layout is a quick and effective method to retrieve it. This process can declutter your Home Screen and restore the original settings.

Reset Home Screen to Default

In the event of a missing Safari icon, we can return our iPhone’s Home Screen layout to its default configuration. Here’s how we do it:

By selecting ‘Reset Home Screen Layout,’ our iPhone will revert to its original state, which means apps like Safari will return to their default locations. Ensure any customized folders or app placements will also be reset.

Restart iPhone to Refresh Layout

Sometimes we must restart our iPhone to effectuate changes or solve minor software issues:

Restarting can refresh your Home Screen layout and may bring back the Safari icon. If the reset is unsuccessful, ensure that iOS is up-to-date or check if Safari is not restricted in your settings.

Restoring Safari App and Data

We often rely on the Safari app for daily browsing, but what happens when Safari disappears from our iPhone? Here’s how to ensure that your browsing data remains intact and how to restore the Safari app if it has been accidentally deleted.

Recovering Accidentally Deleted Safari App

Step 1: Open the App Store and tap on the Search tab at the bottom.

Step 2: Type “Safari” in the search bar. Check if the app appears with a cloud icon, which indicates it’s not currently installed on your iPhone.

Step 3: Tap the cloud icon to redownload the Safari app.

Restoring iPhone from Backup

By trusting these steps, our experience with technology can be seamless and stress-free. If complications arise, Apple Support is always available to assist with restoring our devices and retrieving our valuable information.

Additional Help and Support

If you’re dealing with a Safari icon that’s missing from your iPhone, we have some additional steps you can try. These methods will provide you with support beyond the basic troubleshooting and ensure that any potential software glitches or parental control settings are properly addressed.

Contact Apple Support for Assistance

Utilize online troubleshooting guides.

If you’re looking for a quick fix or want to understand more about common issues before involving Apple Support, we recommend exploring online troubleshooting guides. These resources are often filled with detailed steps tailored to fix Safari icon disappearance, which may be caused by accidental app deletion or restriction settings. Here are some key points to remember:

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, icons randomly missing on iphone here’s a fix.

iPhone missing icons on Home Screen and dock

A peculiar issue can occur for some iPhone users where the icons on their device screen are missing. The icon names may or may not appear, or the icon badges may or may not appear, but the icon itself is usually gone.

Sometimes the entire bottom row of icons in the Dock are missing, along with other icons that are supposed to be on the iPhone Home Screen or within folders.

When the icons are missing, the places they should appear on the screen are still taken up, but they are not clickable, and nothing shows up there at all. It’s a very strange issue and it can be somewhat alarming. But don’t worry, if this happens to you the icons are not gone permanently.

So, does your iPhone screen look something like this, missing icons randomly?

iPhone missing icons

If so, don’t panic.

Help, My iPhone Apps Icons Are Missing!

1: reboot iphone.

The first thing you’ll want to do is reboot your iPhone .

A hard reboot is often the easiest thing to do, which is accomplished by pressing Volume Up, then Volume Down, then pressing and holding the Power button until you see the  Apple logo show up on screen.

Sometimes this alone can fix the missing icon problem, or the blank dock issue.

If the iPhone starts back up and is still missing icons (often they will be different icons missing after a reboot, like a fun game of musical chairs), the next thing to do is to clear up some storage space on the iPhone itself.

2: Clear up storage space

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and locate apps, videos, or other large data hogs, and remove them from the iPhone.

Make sure the iPhone has at least 1GB of storage space freely available.

Then reboot the iPhone again by turning it off and back on (or hard reboot again).

At this point the icons should be back on the screen as expected.

What’s going on here? Why does this happen?

Having personally encountered this issue several times with my iPhone 11 running various versions of iOS 14.6 and iOS 14.x, it’s a bit of a mystery as to what is going on. However, because clearing up storage space and a reboot seems to fix the problem, it could simply be a quirk of what happens when iPhone has run out of space and can’t figure itself out. In my experience, the phone ends up like this in the morning after the iPhone has been plugged in and unused over night, though it’s unclear what if anything that may have to do with why it happens.

It’s well known the iPhone starts dramatically underperforming and misbehaving when the devices storage is full, sometimes deleting photos, mail, apps (though this is a feature called Offload Apps which is separate from the issue mentioned here), and other data from the device. Or perhaps your contacts are seemingly lost, showing phone numbers instead of names as they should. It’s not always related, but try and always keep some storage space available on your device so that it performs well.

It appears that variations of this problem have shown up on Apple discussion boards for a while, so if it’s a bug then it may been longstanding and yet to be addressed. Nonetheless, try freeing up some storage space on your device, and then rebooting, it should work and the icons should be restored.

Have you experienced this issue where icons are randomly missing from iPhone? Did deleting some stuff and rebooting fix the problem for you? Share with us your troubleshooting experiences in the comments.

Thanks, this column really helped.

Thanks, this worked for me!

I rebooted my iPhone but my settings icon is missing but i can still click on it because I know where it is supposed to be but I’ll go to general and then storage but whenever I get to storage the app crashes, and then when I go to photos it always is just a black screen. Is there anything else I can do.

Thank you for these basic steps. Unfortunately neither of those tips worked for me. More advanced information would be great. Thank you

I hate my 12SE without a proper home button, unresponsive glass & now a disappearing DuckDuckGo icon. None of the recommended strategies brought it back. I may go back to the 5S that is out of support but so user friendly (and never lost any icons).

Maybe Apple had had its day.

My Apple Camera icon disaopeared and removing videos from storage and turning off and on did not solve. Also, my storage shows 58 of 128GB used. Anything else I can try?

i did force restart but it made things worse! i tried freeing storage but all it did was crash! i guess its bye bye… my iPhone SE 2 Had a good life

I have noted missing app icons on my iPhone, but when I scrolled to the app library page I would see the missing app icons.

I think in the circumstance shown in pictures it is clearly a unique bug.

No missing icons altogether, but I do have a persistent problem with three icons for New York Times sites changing from the Times T to the bee icon that goes with the Times spelling game. The bee should go with the spelling game; the other two sites should have the T. iOS seems not to understand that. So some mornings I have three bees; others, Ts.

I get that too with my Home Screen bookmark of osxdaily.com, sometimes the bookmark icon is the X and then sometimes it is a generic icon, and I can’t figure this out at all. I used to have the same problem with the Amazon.com bookmark showing a tablet or the A, but I ended up just removing that and going there directly.

Disappearing Safari Tabs on iPhone or iPad? How to Find Them

Every so often, a seemingly small bug in Apple's operating systems survives the company's annual OS launches and continues to cause users huge frustration from one software update to the next.

apple macos bigsur safari improvedtabs 06222020

While there isn't an accepted solution to the problem of disappearing tabs, there are cases where it might seem that your tabs are gone, when in fact they are just hidden from view. Here are some ways that you may be able to get them back or stop them from disappearing in the first place.

Reveal Hidden Tabs

On iPadOS, for example, if you press and hold the Show Tab Overview button (four squares in a quadrant) in the top-right corner of the Safari window, this will reveal a dropdown menu that includes an option to Merge All Windows .

Reveal the Shelf

Another action worth trying on iPadOS is pressing and holding the Safari icon in the Dock or on the Home Screen and selecting Show All Windows from the popup menu that appears.

Recently Closed Tabs

If you have an inkling that some of the tabs you're missing have been inadvertently closed, you can always use the Recently Closed Tabs option to re-open them. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the "+" icon to get a look at all of the tabs that you've recently closed.

play Even if you're aware of the gesture, it's worth a reminder that this feature exists in case someone gets ahold of your phone and checks your browser. Even if you've closed out a tab, it's still going to be visible in Safari, unless you were using a private browser window or have cleared your browsing history.

Turn Off Auto-Close Tabs

If you still haven't been able to find some of your tabs, make sure that Safari isn't closing them after a certain duration on your behalf: Open Settings , tap through to Safari -> Close Tabs and ensure that Manually is selected.

Bookmark All Open Tabs

If the above suggestions haven't worked for you, there is a workaround: Consider bookmarking your open tabs after each browsing session. This might sound like more hassle than it's worth, but since iOS 13 Apple has included a one-tap option to just that.

safari tabs

A popup menu will appear at the on the screen from which you can select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , the X being the number of tabs open.

Once you've tapped this option, you'll be asked to save the tabs in a new bookmarks folder (remember to give it a recognizable name). Alternately, you can choose a location from the existing folder list in which to save the tabs.

safari

To access your bookmarks in Safari at any time, simply tap the Bookmarks icon in the main browsing interface or the sidebar to reveal all of your saved favorites and folders. Press and hold on the folder of bookmarks and select Open in New Tabs , or alternatively, Open in Tab Group if you want them grouped.

11 Best Ways to Fix App Icons Disappeared From iPhone

The home screen of your iPhone is a visual representation of your digital life. Hence, when app icons mysteriously disappear from your iPhone, things can get confusing. Fortunately, there’s no need to tirelessly scroll through your home screen, as it is possible to restore the missing app icons on your iPhone home screen with the tips mentioned below.

Table of Contents

1. Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone is a basic yet effective trick for fixing temporary glitches. To do this, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the side, then use the slider to turn off your iPhone. Wait for a minute or two before turning it back on.

If the issue remains, you can try performing a force reboot. For that, press and quickly release the volume up button, followed by pressing and quickly releasing the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Once your iPhone boots up, check if you can find your missing apps.

2. Free Up Storage Space

A lack of storage space on your iPhone can also cause app icons to disappear randomly. Several users on an Apple Community post reported fixing the issue by freeing up storage space. You can also give it a try.

To check your iPhone’s storage status, open Settings and navigate to General > iPhone Storage .

iPhone Storage Settings

Analyze the storage space occupied by various apps, media files, messages, and more. Make sure your iPhone has a minimum of 1GB of free storage space to ensure optimal performance.

3. Ensure the App Is Installed

If the app icon disappearing issue is limited to one or two apps, open the App Store to verify whether the app is actually installed on your device. It may sound obvious, but it’s worth checking before moving on to the other solutions on this list.

Open the App Store and use the search bar at the top to look for the missing app. If you see a Get button next to it, then you don’t have the app installed on your iPhone, and you can proceed to download it. If you see the Open or Update button, then you have the app on your iPhone, and you can move on to the next solution.

Search App on iPhone App Store

4. Check App Folders

Your iPhone allows you to move apps into folders, helping you declutter the home screen. If you can’t seem to locate the installed app, it might be inside one of those folders. Take a look within the app folders to see if you can find your missing icons there.

App Folders on iPhone Home Screen

5. Use Spotlight Search

Another way to find missing apps on your iPhone is by using Spotlight search . To do this, swipe down on the home screen and type in the name of the app. If the app is installed, you’ll be able to launch it from here.

Search Apps on iPhone

6. Check the App Library

The App Library on the iPhone is where you’ll find all your apps, even if they’re not on the home screen. To locate the missing app, navigate to the rightmost home screen page and swipe from right to left to reveal the App Library .

Tap on the search bar up top, and you’ll find all the installed apps in alphabetical order. Scroll through the list to find your app. Then, long press its app icon and select Add to Home Screen to move the app icon to your home screen.

Add App to iPhone Home Screen

Repeat this for all the app icons that have disappeared from the iPhone.

7. Check Screen Time Settings

Screen Time is a useful feature on the iPhone that can help you limit your app usage by hiding their icons. With it, you can hide apps like Mail, Safari, Camera, and others. If you’ve previously restricted these apps on your iPhone, they won’t appear in the Spotlight search or in the App Library. To unhide the restricted apps, follow the steps below.

1. Launch the Settings app and navigate to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions .

Content and Privacy Restrictions on iPhone

2. Tap on Allowed Apps and make sure the toggles next to all the apps are enabled.

Allow Apps on iPhone

3. Return to the Content & Privacy Restrictions page and select Content Restrictions > Apps .

Content Restrictions on iPhone

4. Select Allow All .

Show All Apps on iPhone

8. Unhide Home Screen Pages

If you can open an app through Spotlight Search and the App Library but can’t seem to locate its icon, it’s possible that you’ve hidden the home screen page containing that icon.

To unhide your home screen pages, tap and hold anywhere on an empty space on your home screen. Then, tap the dots at the bottom to edit your home screen pages. Make sure all the home screen pages are ticked, and tap Done .

Unhide Home Screen Pages on iPhone

Your iPhone also allows you to hide home screen pages using Focus. So, if you’re using a Focus profile, you will need to ensure that you haven’t hidden a home screen page. Here’s how to do that.

1. Open the Settings app, tap Focus , and select your Focus profile from the following menu.

Focus Settings on iPhone

2. Under Customize Screens, tap the Edit button. Uncheck all the home screen boxes and tap Done .

Modify Focus Settings on iPhone

9. Reset Home Screen Layout

Another quick way to locate your missing apps, like Phone, Camera, and App Store, is to arrange them in alphabetical order. Simply reset your home screen by following the steps below.

1. Open Settings on your iPhone and navigate to General > Transfer or Reset iPhone .

Transfer or Reset iPhone

2. Scroll down to select Reset . Next, choose Reset Home Screen Layout from the resulting menu.

10. Unhide Purchased Apps

Is an app appearing on your iPhone’s home screen but not on the App Store? It’s possible that you have hidden your purchases. If that’s the case, the app will not appear in the App Store for you or anyone else added to your family sharing. Here’s how to unhide them.

1. Launch the App Store and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner. Now tap on your Apple ID at the top.

App Store Account Settings on iPhone

2. Scroll down to select Hidden Purchases and tap the Unhide option next to the app.

11. Install iOS Updates

A buggy or outdated iOS build can also give rise to such anomalies. So, if nothing works, you should check your iPhone for pending software updates and install them.

Open the Settings app and head to General > Software Update . Download and install pending updates and see if that solves the problem.

Check for Updates on iPhone

1. Why did app icons disappear from my iPhone?

There can be a number of reasons behind apps disappearing from the iPhone, ranging from a minor glitch to the app being restricted. Additionally, you might not see certain app icons on your home screen if you have previously removed them.

2. Where is App Library on iPhone?

To locate the App Library on your iPhone, swipe all the way to the last home screen page on your right, then swipe one more time to reveal the App Library.

From Disappeared to Dazzling

Tirelessly scrolling through your home screens and not finding your favorite apps can be annoying. Hopefully, applying the above fixes has helped you restore the disappeared app icons back on your iPhone’s home screen, and you’re at peace.

How to refresh website favicons in Safari on Mac

Are some website icons missing or showing incorrectly in Safari? Learn how to refresh Safari favicons on your Mac to force the browser to fetch the new icons and display everything correctly.

Several websites in Safari on Mac showing tabs and favicons

A favicon is the small website logo you see in your browser tab. The ability to see favicons for websites in Safari is convenient. It lets you spot the site you want at a glance by seeing just the icon on your tab, in your bookmark list, and in your history.

But have you ever noticed favicons that go missing or are incorrect, showing the wrong icon? You can “refresh” the website favicons in Safari on Mac in just a few steps, and we’ll show you how.

Also see: How to hide or show website icons in Safari Favorites Bar

Delete Safari’s favicon cache

If you’re experiencing favicons that aren’t right, maybe they have icons for different websites; clearing the cache and starting over is a good option.

1) Close and quit Safari . You can do this by clicking Safari from the top menu bar and choosing Quit Safari .

2) Using Finder, click Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar

3) Enter ~/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/ in the pop-up window and go to this location.

4) Select all items in the cache folder and move them to the Trash . You can select all with the keyboard shortcut Command + A and then drag them to your Trash or right-click and pick Move to Trash.

Move Safari Favicon Cache to Trash

5) Empty your Trash or delete those items from it. (For help with both options, check out our tutorial on How to Empty Trash on Mac .)

6) Open Safari .

The Safari favicon cache folder will rebuild itself as you visit websites. And you’ll need to visit the sites you have saved for the favicons to appear. But those that were incorrect or missing should show up correctly.

Alternative option

If you’d rather try something else, there is one other option that may or may not work.

Open the website with the incorrect favicon in a private window in Safari. You can do this easily by right-clicking Safari in your Dock and selecting New Private Window or selecting File > New Private Window from the menu bar.

Visit the website in the private window, and when you return to your non-private Safari, the favicon may be correct.

The suggestion comes from the Apple Community Forum . This method did not work for the user with the question, nor did it work for me; however, it’s worth a try if you’d like.

Enabling favicons in Safari

As a reminder, you can enable favicons in Safari on older versions of macOS by following these simple steps.

1) With Safari open, click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar.

2) Select the Tabs tab.

3) Check the box for Show website icons in tabs to enable favicons.

Hopefully, either rebuilding the Safari favicon cache or opening a specific site in a private window works for you. And if you have another method to refresh favicons in Safari that works for you, please share it in the comments below!

How to view and clear your web browsing history in Safari on iPhone or iPad

Easily wipe your browsing history in Apple's Safari web browser in seconds.

What you'll need

How to find your web-browsing history, how to clear your web browsing history.

Clearing your browsing history on iPhone and iPad in Safari has been a straightforward affair for years now.

Sometimes you want to clear your history to get rid of bloat and streamline your browsing experience. Other times, you're trying to hide a gift purchase from a loved one.

Apple makes it very easy to clear your browsing history on both the iPhone and iPad and we're here to show you how. Here's how you can make a fresh start in Safari and debloat your web browsing experience.

On the latest models, web browsing is smoother than ever before thanks to ProMotion in the iPhone 15 Pro and faster chipsets like the M2 found in the iPad Air 6 . If you're looking for a new Apple device, we highly recommend one of the following:

Grab the best iPhone available right now starting from $999. With a gorgeous titanium finish and the most powerful chip ever in an iPhone, you won't be disappointed with the 15 Pro.

iPad Air 6 13-inch |$799$754 at Amazon

iPad Air 6 13-inch | $799 $754 at Amazon

With an M2 chip and a 13-inch screen option, the new iPad Air 6 is one of the best iPads available right now. Normally $799, you can pick up the 13-inch model for nearly $50 off at the moment — don't miss out.

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do, here's how:

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated in iOS 18 . If Apple's web browser could automatically clear history after 24 hours it would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

Safari homepage/startpage icons have gone grey

I have a question. Most of the icons on the Safari homepage have gone grey, or how to say it. It looks like they have not been reloaded as they should after I cleared cache, buffers and history. So that was when the problem started. My Macbook Pro have been restarted several times after that, and the Safari app have been restarted even more times. But, most of the startpage icons are still greyed out even how much I restart and what not.

In the picture below you can see what I mean, many are grey. They do still work as they should. If I press one of them, they work just like normal. But it is not pretty, and it is annoying with those grey buttons. As you see, their logos have disappeared too.

My Safari is in norwegian language. And the picture show the Safari homepage or startpage or what it is called in english. And "Favoritter" means "favorites".

How can I get the greyed out icons back again?

Thank you all in advance!

The problem was solved by pressing "Empty caches" in the Develop menu. After that the icons suddenly started to come back all by itself, and does not disappear when restarting Safari. There are only some that haven't come back yet.

This happens when history is cleared, caches emptied or cookies removed.

Try revisiting those sites again.

Go step by step and test.

1. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

2. Startup in Safe Mode. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac .

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to  using First Aid in Disk Utility .

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and

the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed

Jun 25, 2021 10:24 AM in response to R.Thomassen

I now discovered that it seems to work to add those pages to the Startpage again. I tested with one of them, and it worked. So that is a solution, deleting the old icons and add new ones.

Jun 25, 2021 10:21 AM in response to dominic23

Thank you so much for your reply. But unfortunately, it did not solve the problem.

I have done the startup in Safe Mode, quit Safari and launched again holding the Shift key down, visited all those sites again, checked for both system and program updates, but no, everything is just the same.

Jul 21, 2021 3:51 PM in response to R.Thomassen

A month on, how is it going? Has this been a permanent fix for you?

The same problem has plagued me for many months. A couple of months ago I found another discussion which discussed where the icons are stored, so I tried deleting them from the Finder. I had some limited success at the time, but the results were still patchy and unpredictable, and it got worse again over time.

Selecting 'Empty Caches' in the Develop menu today and revisiting all the sites has restored icons to many of my favourites, but it has not restored colour to any of the letters, so about half of them are still just grey letters.

It's frustrating, because the icons and colours are key to guiding your eye to the one you're looking for. Without them, you really lose that efficiency—typing into the search bar would probably be quicker.

Jul 23, 2021 4:01 AM in response to Kalsta

No, it was unfortunately not a permanent fix. But I don't have as much as half of them grey. Suddenly today my Yahoo mail icon got its color back after being grey for ages. And suddenly today my two NRK icons (Norwegian broadcaster with news and TV) have a logo for NRK Sport (!?). Very strange since I hate sport and never ever have visited NRK Sport. Those icons are living their own life, for sure.

I did have more or less the same problems as you. It was fixed at first, but then started to get grey again and with disappearing logos. But never as bad as before. I did not try to fix it several time, I just gave up. Why? Because I have a bigger problem that I have no idea how to solve. When opening a new tab, it often freeze Safari for a while (like roughly halv of the time). That is extremely annoying. And on top of that I have to crash Safari several times during the day because everything freezes. I can't remember exactly, but when pressing "report" to Apple, I get this crash report saying something with too many stacks or something. And I can't play movies or TV-show from a specific Norwegian site. Safari just can't load the movies, even though that the site says that for Mac, Safari is the best to use and should work as long as it is updated. But it doesn't on my machine, so something is wrong and I have no idea how to fix it, not even how to search forums for a fix. When visiting that site, I have to use another browser. And I don't like them, not at all. I love Safari, but hate all the problems that I have with it. And I forgot to mention Safari is really slow because of Adguard. I have tried several adblockers, either they don't work to get rid of the GDPR warnings or the are slow as Adguard. Everything just works perfectly when using the Opera browser. I want Safari to work just as good, but yes, I sort of have given up since I'm not a computer engineer or something.

I'm now downloading the Big Sur update, I hope that will fix some issues with grey icons, freezing problems and such. We'll see. I don't have too high hopes though. But maybe, since I have reported a lot of the crashes to Apple, they might have fixed things.

R.Thomassen wrote:

Haha… yes indeed they are. Today, most of my icons are gone again, but two letters have randomly regained their colour. Like you, I have given up trying to make sense of it.

I don't have your other issues with Safari. I use Magic Lasso ad blocker, which occasionally blocks a legitimate site from loading (in which case I just bypass it), but mostly seems to work okay.

I've been running Big Sur for some time, so I don't imagine it'll fix your grey icon issue. I just updated to 11.5—same problems. Might be time to submit a bug report to Apple.

Jun 25, 2021 10:37 AM in response to R.Thomassen

And for some of them it actually worked to revisit them, when doing it now after the Safe mode etc. It doesn't seem to work for all icons.

Jun 25, 2021 10:49 AM in response to R.Thomassen

And some of them greyed out again when closing and reopening Safari. Strange....
