Description [ ]

As said above, the mission can be introduced in either Franklin 's or Trevor 's perspective. The mission begins at Franklin's house , where Lamar and Denise heckle the latter for his neglect of the CGF as of late. Franklin, however, doesn't want to be part of the petty gang banging in any way possible. Trevor suddenly appears out of the blue. After giving Denise $7 and shooing her back into the house, he says his reason for being there is to make new friends. At that moment, a drug deal sounded intriguing.

The men load themselves into the back of Lamar's van , along with Lamar's dog Chop , and head to Grove Street , where they'll do the exchange with the Ballas . After reaching Grove Street shortly, everyone gets out of the van and follows Lamar up to one of the houses. The dealer opens the door suspiciously as all three men are presented with a white block wrapped in plastic. Once it's cut open, Lamar gets a taste and is extremely eager to hand over a large sum of cash for it.

Trevor, however, is much more skeptical. He asks if they can take a sample from the other side of the brick, but the dealer refuses to do so and instead plays hardball, emboldened by Franklin's eagerness to leave as soon as possible. As Trevor grows frustrated, he grabs onto the block and after a moment of tug of war with the dealer, it breaks in half, proving his skepticism to be correct after all; it was just a gram of nose-candy surrounding a core of drywall filler. The dealer shouts out into the street that they have a case of "buyer's remorse" on hand before quickly slamming the door, which alerts all nearby Ballas and causes them to open fire at the crew.

The throbbing score violently begins to increase as more armed Ballas members appear in Felons disposed to kill the trio as Chop runs back home. In the heat of the battle, the LSPD show up to deal with the situation. Franklin and Trevor follow Lamar through a narrow alley that he found in an effort to help the men escape. As they ran towards the open water, they see the rapper MC Clip and a group of girls in colourful bikinis dancing for a film crew in front of three jet skis . After stealing them, all three men head towards the open sea.

After riding across the ocean and putting distance between them and the cops, Franklin figures that the cops would have a harder time catching them if they all split up. From there, depending on who the player is controlling, can either have all the characters go off on their own or pair up with another character to escape the cops. Depending on who the player is playing as and which way they choose to escape will either end the mission early or open up unique conversations with Trevor, Lamar or Franklin.

Walkthrough [ ]

Go to Franklin's house to trigger the mission, if the player wants to save without triggering the mission they can do so by using the Quick save feature from the protagonist's Mobile Phone .

Get in Lamar's Speedo van with the trio.

Wait for the trio to get in Lamar's van and drive to Grove Street for the deal.

Get out of Lamar's speedo van with the trio, walking to the dealer's house. A cutscene will play about the "thing".

This objective appears the same for Franklin and Trevor. After the cutscene, Ballas gang members attacks the trio. Kill and escape from Ballas with Lamar and Trevor helping. SWITCH to either Trevor or Franklin if they have low health.

After escaping from Grove Street, the LSPD will come to deal with the situation. Follow Lamar to the LS River , the player can kill MC Clip or straight through stealing his Seasharks, later a little cutscene starts. After the cutscene, a car will drive-by and attack the trio, the player can shoot back but it will not be necessary as the driver will lose focus on the side of the river and crash. A helicopter flies by and shoots the trio. After riding across the ocean, the trio has to split up. Before the next objective, the player can SWITCH to Trevor or Franklin as they will be unable to SWITCH later.

This objective only appears when the player loses both of the characters later they have to lose the cops by themselves, alone.

Gold Medal Objectives [ ]

• Skip all cutscenes and flee alone up the LS River.
• Kill enemies with headshots or a shotgun.
• Shoot as many enemies with headshots, which also helps with accuracy.
• MC Clip - Can be killed by either Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips to steal his Seashark. Regardless of the player's choice, the news will state that he was killed. (non-canon death)
• Numerous members of the Ballas - Killed by Franklin Clinton, Trevor Philips and Lamar Davis during an ambush.
• Several LSPD officers - Can be killed by Trevor or Franklin when escaping from the Ballas ambush.

Aftermath [ ]

Phone calls [ ].

• Franklin can call Lamar after the mission, asking him if he has called Stretch about the situation, in which Lamar will reply saying that Stretch was as shocked as the trio was. Franklin doesn't believe Stretch and tells Lamar to be careful, to which Lamar will tell Franklin to be a little bit more like Trevor.
• After calling Lamar, Franklin can call Stretch to confront him about his suspicions. Stretch will brush it off and be angry at Franklin for bringing Trevor along to the meeting, to which Franklin responds to by saying that it was a good thing that Trevor was there because he uncovered the scam and that thanks to him, Franklin is still alive. Franklin then asks Stretch why he set up him and Lamar, but Stretch dismisses having any role in it and instead blames it on Trevor for coming along.
• Lamar will text Trevor after the mission, offering to hang out. Trevor can call Lamar afterwards, engaging in an awkward conversation.

" MC Clip was killed yesterday after gangsters fleeing from a shootout in Davis and overran a photoshoot and shot Clip dead before escaping on some Speedophile Seasharks. MC Clip, real name Curtis Cray turned his back to gangster life 3 years ago to embrace narcissistic consumption, and was about to release a new album when he was gunned down. Experts believe this will be a great career move, especially for a rapper with messianic delusions. Police are searching for 3 gang bangers on Seasharks. "

"The recent upsurge in violence continues; An MC Clip photo shoot in the Los Santos river turned nasty after three gang bangers disrupted proceedings and shot the place up. Police are searching for three gang members on Speedophiles."

• The mission was originally going to be called "Ghetto Safari" and "Urban Safari".
• This is a reference to the Grove Street Families from the 3D Universe canon, in the events of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , and also unintentionally foreshadowing the events of Grand Theft Auto Online : The Contract , set eight years after Grand Theft Auto V , where Franklin and Lamar are CEOs of their own legit businesses.
• Franklin and Trevor (playing as Franklin): They will talk about Michael being a bad influence on Franklin.
• When playing as Trevor and sticking with Franklin during the escape, Franklin may say "Let's see how the experienced expert in everything ducks the cops!" referencing to how Trevor is a "professional" criminal.
• Trevor and Lamar: They will talk about what the colors represent to the gangs.
• While this is the fastest option for earning the Gold Medal, there is no extra dialogue.
• It is also possible to call Stretch , where he and Franklin will discuss about Trevor coming along to the meeting.
• During the shootout, Lamar may say additional lines if the player uses a sniper rifle.
• Trevor may yell, "Chamberlain Families for life, motherfuckers!", a reference to how the Grove Street Families motto is, "Grove 4 Life", he also yells this line in Lamar Down .
• Franklin can also hang out with Lamar and Trevor together as well.
• The background music used during the shootout between the Ballas and the protagonists is the same music used in the Grand Theft Auto V Gameplay Trailer.
• The drug deal goes down at a house that is in the same vicinity that the Johnson House existed in 3D Universe counterpart of Grove Street in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , although the house bears no resemblance.
• The name and setup of the mission are similar to Concrete Jungle , a mission in Grand Theft Auto IV , where Niko Bellic helps Little Jacob to go to a drug deal, which fails, leading Niko to kill the dealers and later taking revenge on the dealers' friends in their apartment .
• It is possible to kill MC Clip during the mission, with Weazel News reporting on it. Oddly, a bleet from MC Clip on Bleeter exists afterwards, meaning that he either bleeted prior to dying, the news was wrong, or that it was a developer oversight.
• Trevor defaults to the Pump Shotgun , and Franklin to the SMG in this mission.
• Chop flees once the firefight begins, following Lamar's orders. Once the mission ends, he'll return to Franklin's safehouse.
• Either Franklin or Trevor can trigger the mission; Trevor will arrive in the middle of Franklin's argument with his aunt and Lamar. To see the complete exchange, start the mission as Franklin.
• Canonically, completing this mission before The Hotel Assassination makes sense, as Franklin hasn't moved out yet.
• This mission is extremely similar to a scene of the movie Training Day where a resident of Compton, on which Grove Street and Davis in general are based, yells out to the gang members nearby that they were ripped off, prompting a gunfight that involves the whole neighborhood. In Hood Safari, the drug dealer who attempts to swindle Franklin, Lamar, and Trevor, shouts a line about buyer's remorse before slamming the door, prompting the local Ballas members to open fire on the trio.

Hood Safari

Hood Safari  is a main story mission in Grand Theft Auto V given by Lamar Davis , involving protagonist Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips .

It's the 25 ° GTA V mission in chronological order, and it takes place in Los Santos.

Franklin and Lamar show Trevor a typical South Los Santos neighborhood.

Gold Medal Objectives (100%)

The following are the Mission Objectives required to obtain the Gold Medal in the mission "Hood Safari":

• Skip all cutscenes.
• Flee alone up the LS River.
• Accuracy: Finish with a shooting accuracy of at least 70%.
• Headshots: Kill 12 enemies with a headshot.

Note: You can complete each Gold Medal requirement in multiple playthroughs of the mission. You don't need to obtain them all in one single playthrough .

Hood Safari - Mission Details:

Franklin arrives home to Denise berating him for his disloyalty to the families recently. Lamar leaves Franklin's house and joins in with Denise, saying he's not doing enough for the hood. Trevor appears mid-conversation, gives Denise a few dollars to "get herself something nice" and tells her to leave.

Franklin gets annoyed at Trevor for his actions and asks what he's doing there. Trevor states he wants to make friends as he's new in town. Franklin just wants to go home but Lamar mentions "a thing" with Stretch and Trevor wants to get in on it.

The trio plus Chop get into a van and head to Grove Street. Lamar tells the group about the deal that's about to go down. They head to the house where the deal is happening. Lamar takes a sample of the drugs to make sure they're good but Trevor isn't sure of it all and asks for a taste of the other side of the brick of the drug. He tussles with the dealer, eventually breaking the brick to notice it's just drywall in the middle.

The dealer shouts that his deal has gone wrong, starting a gunfight in the street with neighbouring Ballas. Chop runs away from the action, with Trevor, Franklin and Lamar fighting their way out of Grove Street. The LSPD arrives on the scene, making the trio gain three-star heat. The group runs away from the street into the Los Santos River.

They hijack a couple of Seasharks and ride out to sea. After a hefty pursuit, the group decides to split up to enhance their chances of escaping. The mission ends once the heat has died down.

Getting Gold in GTA 5 Hood Safari Mission: A Walkthrough

Grand Theft Auto V is a massive game with no shortage of content and interesting things to do. In this continuing series, we’ll take a look at the Hood Safari mission where we’ll visit CJ’s old neighborhood, the infamous Grove Street. So, join us as we go through how to get gold in this mission and escape with Lamar.

Mission Summary

The mission starts with Franklin joining Lamar, Chop, and Trevor to head back to Grove Street. You will defeat several waves of enemies, sneak past the cops, and escape with Lamar to obtain gold. To get gold, you need to kill 12 enemies with headshots, finish with an accuracy of 70, and complete the mission in under seven minutes.

Walkthrough: Getting Gold in Hood Safari

First, grab some body armor, explosives, and ammo to help you tackle the waves of enemies that come your way. Start by lighting up the enemies using body shots, but remember that you need to kill at least 12 enemies with headshots for gold. Take the extra moment to take headshots wherever possible.

During the shooting, watch out for Trevor, who has a habit of standing right in the line of fire. Take cover and swap weapons as per the situation. You’ll also encounter a few waves of enemy cars; ensure to make headshots before taking them out.

The mission has a time limit; hence, you’ll need to progress quickly. Long guns and rifles are handy for hitting those long-range shots. After defeating the waves of enemies, you’ll need to escape from the cops with Lamar.

Borrow the conveniently placed jet skis and try to lose the cops as quickly as possible. You can speed up by pushing forward on the flat ground. Avoid spraying bullets and focus on making one bullet count at a time.

If cops come in sight, try to eliminate them as quickly as possible. Stay under the bridge to avoid the police helicopter’s spotlight and head towards the port area, which is easy to evade the police.

After losing the cops, head back towards Grove Street to finish the mission. Ensure you complete the mission in under seven minutes to obtain gold.

Here are a few tips to help you get through this mission on your first attempt and obtain gold:

• Avoid using the spray and pray approach to shooting. Shoot for the body and only shoot one bullet at a time if an automatic weapon is not required.
• If it’s not practical to grab cover, keep moving side to side to make yourself harder to hit.
• Explosives are your friend; use them wisely.

grumpy gamer grand theft auto is a truly massive game between gta 5 and the constant updates from rockstar for gta online there’s no shortage of new content and interesting things to do join me then in our continuing series getting gold in every damn mission in gta 5 as we take a look at the grand theft auto mission wood safari and don’t forget to hang about until the end so you can catch our bonus tips on how to get through this one first go before we dive in if you’re new to the channel we do how-to guides news and giveaways so consider subscribing and ring the bell to stay up to date getting gold in this mission is a lot of fun but it can also be a bit challenging there are a few waves of enemies that come in hot and lamar has a habit of standing right in the line of fire i also highly recommend you take a minute to grab some body armor some explosives and stocking up on ammo to get gold in this one we’ll need to kill 12 enemies with headshots finish with an accuracy of 70 and complete the mission in under seven minutes radio we’re on a timeline so let’s dive right on in okay so we have taken control of franklin we’ll just jump straight in the van wait for chop and trev to load up it’s a lovely evening here at the moment and it really is just a case of having a listen to some of the exposition and following the directions back to grove street it’s a fairly quick trip so that’s not too bad and occasionally you can see cyclists coming through there they are that is alleged to be some of cj’s old boys we’ll see what happens all right so we’ve driven up there and there’s cj’s old house looking a little worse for wear if i’m honest so head on over to the marker lamar will do his thing we’ll just uh skip the cutscene there and dive right into the action so start by lighting up as many as you can body shots when they need to be taken care of quickly otherwise take the extra moment to get that head shot remember we do need to kill at least 12 enemies with headshots all right so we’ll advance here there we go that’s him sorted and do watch out for trevor he does get in the line of sight here a little bit but he’s otherwise fairly useful all right so the first wave’s just about done we’ve got a couple of cars coming up and again taking the extra time to make those head shots swap out to trevor we’ve got rampage there and we also have the shotgun and the autos which is really handy so again making sure we take that extra moment just to get the accuracy up we got him there he is okay so advancing again as soon as you can remember we are on a time limit and the long guns and the rifles are really handy for hitting those arranged shots all right here comes the next one so i’ll take some cover and that’ll sort him out okay so back to the automatic franklin’s looking a little dazed but he’ll be fine all right that seems to have cleared the rest of this wave so now we just have to wait for the next what’s an idiot right okay so that is the next wave franklin will put himself out in a moment we’ll be right lamar standing in the middle of the street which never helps yeah he’s alive all right great okay so there’s a couple of thugs that’ll sneak around to the right and again labar getting in the way sneak around to the right then it’s the police to take care of so we just want to swap to franklin here we’ll just scoot down the side street and borrow these conveniently placed jet skis now the first part wasn’t too bad the next bit’s where it gets hairy because we need to lose the cops in a hurry now she’s not getting off okay and off we go okay so we have that warrant and it’s a bit challenging to get rid of these guys sometimes so just try and light these fellas up if we can oh and there she goes and that’s him sorted right police helicopter there not a lot we can do about them just uh stick to the side and try and stay out of their uh their lights all right now remember you can speed up the jet ski on flat ground by just pushing forward as well okay so staying under the bridge to try and stand out the line of sight of that chopper and heading through the next part of the bay and not far off open water to be honest so we’ll see how we go there looks like the chop is still on our backside all right so the temptation is to head over to the left to the beach there but instead we’re going to go to the rice and come up closer to the docks where it’s a little bit easier to evade the police because we don’t have to deal with sand and also they aren’t over this side they’ve stuck largely to the other side there so you can see we’re flashing we’ve already lost them and it’s just a case now staying out of the line of sight yeah i can’t see them all anywhere so we just need to wait out that warrant might get out into open water yeah now definitely not chasing us they have lost us all together and what a lovely evening it is too all right coming back on the lights of the port area and the airport and there goes the warrant and that is gold absolutely stormed it in with a time nearly 80 accuracy so absolutely smashed it in so thanks for watching to the end here are my top tips on how to get through this one first go avoid using the spray and pray approach to shooting even if you choose an automatic weapon shoot for the body and try to only shoot one bullet at a time if it’s not practical The unlikely trio goes on a trip in the hood.

After completing the Three’s Company and The Long Stretch missions in GTA 5, a mission involving Lamar, Franklin, and Trevor named Hood Safari will become playable in-game.

The mission is relatively short and only requires players to complete three relatively easy objectives to get a Gold Medal finish.

This guide will show you how to complete the Hood Safari mission and how you can complete the Gold Medal objectives for this mission in Grand Theft Auto 5.

Hood Safari Synopsis

Franklin arrives at his house to be met by his aunt Denise reprimanding him about hanging out too often with a group of old men (Michael and Trevor). Lamar doubles down on Denise’s take, telling Franklin he hasn’t been going to any meetings or meeting up with the homies lately.

Lamar then explains to Franklin how important the hood is for their people, how gangs are positive, and how they are part of their heritage. The trio engages in more banter but is cut short when Trevor suddenly arrives at the Clinton front lawn.

Trevor hands Denise some money telling her to buy herself something nice. Denise initially thanks Trevor for the money but realizes that the money Trevor gave her was only $7. Trevor answers her by saying he asked her to buy something nice, not expensive, and proceeds to insult Denise, calling her a greedy cow.

As Denise retreats into the house, Franklin asks Trevor what he’s doing in the area. Trevor tells Franklin he wants to make new friends since he’s new in town.

Franklin turns Trevor down, saying he wants to get some rest. Lamar explains to Franklin why he came over – to discuss a little thing. Franklin tells Lamar he’s tired and doesn’t want anything to do with this little thing Lamar was talking about.

Trevor breaks his silence by asking Franklin and Lamar about this little thing. Lamar shuts Trevor down, but Trevor insists on doing something about it.

Lamar tells Franklin about the thing with Stretch, and Trevor insists they immediately go and deal with it right away, so the trio head to a house on Grove Street to buy some drugs.

Upon arrival, the contact gives Lamar a small product sample from the top of a brick stack. However, Trevor was a bit suspicious, so he asked the contact to give him a bigger sample from the bottom side of the stack.

The contact declined, which piqued Trevor’s suspicions even more. Trevor and the contact engage in a quick tug of war, causing the stack to rip apart in half, exposing the innards as nothing but drywall.

The contact immediately shuts the door and calls up the local gang to deal with Franklin, Lamar, and Trevor.

After a stand-off with the local gang, the trio make their way towards the sewers and steal a couple of jetskis to try and outrun the LSPD.

• The cutscenes will cut into this time requirement. Skip all cutscenes to buy yourself more time.
• Aim for the head whenever you can.
• Don’t hesitate to take body shots to ensure you land your shots.
• Landing more successful shots on the body will give you more leeway if you miss your headshot attempts later on.

Get in the van and drive towards the marked location on the map.

Get out of the car and walk with Lamar and Trevor towards the contact’s house.

After a quick cutscene (skip these all cutscenes to save time) a bunch of gang members will come in and storm the area. Now’s a better time than ever to score all those headshots since a ton of gang members will be running in and out of the area.

However, make every shot count, as you need to end the mission with at least 70% accuracy. Do this by aiming for the body on targets that are too far away. Reserve those headshot attempts for enemies that are much closer to you.

Switch to Trevor and use Trevor’s special ability to slow time down and score those headshots.

Follow Lamar and make your way down towards the sewers. Steal any one of the jetskis and flee towards the open sea.

Turn around and split up from Franklin and Lamar and head towards the marked location on the map as soon as the game tells you to “Lose the Cops.”

Franklin’s Backyard

Hood Safari is a relatively easy mission to get a Gold Medal in. This introductory mission between Franklin, Lamar, and Trevor will only require you to land 12 headshots and keep your accuracy above 70%. If you skip the cutscenes immediately after starting the mission, you can finish the mission in less than 7-minutes and still have time to spare.

Hood Safari is a mission in Grand Theft Auto V given to protagonist Franklin Clinton , later joined by Trevor Philips , by Lamar Davis from the Strawberry safehouse in Strawberry , Los Santos .

Franklin returns to his house and is confronted by his aunt Denise who claims that he should be arrested for disloyalty. Franklin questions her and then sees Lamar exiting their house, with Lamar reminding him that he had not attended any of his aunts feminist meetings and not been around with this friends, which Denise also argues. Franklin, who can not believe that his aunt is saying he is not a good enough gang member, is then told by Lamar that gangs are a positive thing. Denise continues to verbally attack Franklin until she spots Trevor Philips . Trevor begins to flirt with Denise, suggesting that she is Franklin's sister and defends her when Franklin criticises her. Trevor gives her some money and tells her to buy something nice although Denise complains that he had only given her $ 7. He then tells her to leave with Denise arguing that all men are same before going back into the house.

Franklin, who had only just met Trevor , asks why he has turned up and Trevor tells him that as he is new in town he is attempting to be friends, inviting them to go party. Lamar then tells Franklin of his plans regarding the "thing", which Franklin is reluctant to get involved with. Trevor, however, is eager to become involved and the three, along with Lamar's dog Chop , drive to Grove St . On the way Lamar explains that he and Stretch had set up a deal to buy drugs from a dealer despite them being Families gang members and the dealer living in Ballas territory.

Upon arrival they meet the dealer, who is reluctant to open his front door. Lamar shows him the money and the dealer opens the door, showing them the goods and offering a sample. Lamar snorts the drugs and Franklin argues that they should leave. An unsatisfied Trevor asks to taste the drugs and, after the dealer refuses, breaks the drugs in half in an attempt to wrestle them out of the dealers hand. The brick of drugs breaks, revealing that the drugs was actually drywall. The dealer shouts that the there is "buyers' remorse out here" before running into his house, shutting the front door behind him. Ballas gang members then turn up and begin shooting at Franklin, Trevor and Lamar. The three begin to return fire while Chop runs away. As the three begin to get to the end of Grove St the police arrive and begin opening fire on Franklin, Trevor, Lamar and the Ballas gang members.

In the confusion Franklin, Trevor and Lamar escape down a side alley and head to the river, seeing MC Clip shooting a new video. They then steal three Seasharks belonging to MC Clip and begin to make their escape briefly being chased by a car of Ballas gang members, who eventually crash into a wall. They are then spotted by an LSPD helicopter and while being chased, Franklin tells Lamar that Stretch had set them up. Lamar mentions that there are numerous Sea Races around the state , which they should look into after their escape. They decide to split up and each lose the police.

Secondary objectives

• It can be assumed that Chop is familiar with Los Santos having returned to Franklin's house, whether he is living in Strawberry or Vinewood Hills .
• Three people can be seen cycling away from Grove St as Franklin, Trevor and Lamar arrive. They wear similar clothing to Carl Johnson , Big Smoke and Ryder who are seen cycling away from a Ballas attack in the mission Sweet & Kendl in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and speculate what happened to the gang members of the time.
• The Grove Street Families from GTA San Andreas are referenced by both Franklin and Lamar if the player follows Lamar while attempting to escape the police.
• The player can kill MC Clip although there is no requirement to do so.
• The missions name is similar to Concrete Jungle from Grand Theft Auto IV .

Once known as Leningrad and before that Petrograd, Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the country’s second-largest city. Set next to the Neva River, close to the Baltic Sea, this city is home to over 5 million people.

It’s the world’s northernmost city, founded by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter the apostle. Once home to the Tsars of Russia, it is today known as the country’s cultural capital.

With iconic sights such as Hermitage Museum, Nevsky Prospect, Peterhof Palace, and so much more, it has a fascinating heritage ripe for exploration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the 13 best things to do in St. Petersburg.

1. Visit The World Famous Hermitage Museum

One of the city’s most popular attractions (with over 3 million items in its esteemed collection), State Hermitage Museum showcases everything from fine art to ancient artifacts. 

Even if you don’t plan on entering inside, the exterior is an architectural gem in itself. The columns are all in white with green/gold facades that can be viewed from the river or Palace Square.

If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, your trip would not be complete without stopping past this world-famous landmark. It’s also a great activity to do no matter what time of year you are visiting – and a perfect way to escape those cold Russian winter days. 

There are six buildings in the museum complex in total. Five of which – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre – can be accessed by the public.

Within, you’ll be treated to Egyptian collections, artifacts dating from ancient Mesopotamia, and classical Greek jewelry, pottery, and sculptures. This is any historical culture lover’s dream.

2. Take in a Performance at Mariinsky Theatre

The Neoclassical Mariinsky Theatre is home to Russia’s revered opera and ballet companies.

The theatre – named after the wife of Tsar Alexandra II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna – has been here since 1860 when it was known as the Kirov Theatre.

This magnificent building, since it opened, has hosted stage performances and premieres from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and famous ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. 

Today, in addition to hosting live performances, the theatre has its own record label, which focuses on releasing music by Russian composers Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov.

3. See Jewelled Eggs at the Faberge Museum

The House of Faberge was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by Gustav Faberge. Originally a jeweler, he became famous for designing jewel-encrusted eggs for the Tsars of Russia and is arguably the most famous goldsmith of the modern era. 

Today, you can view these iconic collection pieces in the Faberge Museum. It showcases 4,000 items in total, including Faberge Easter eggs, jewelry, silverware, home decor, and fantasy-themed objects.

The incredible jeweled eggs are famous all over the world, and there are several museums dedicated to them. But if you want to learn about Gustav Faberge, his family, and how it all began, this is the museum to visit. You can purchase a ticket in person or online. 

4. Spend an Hour Canal Cruising

St. Petersburg is built on 42 islands, and once upon a time (before bridges were constructed), cruising was the only way to navigate the city.

On a Golden Ring boat tour, you’ll see some of St. Petersburg’s iconic sights along the Kryukov Canal, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Mariinsky theatre.

You’ll dip beneath the famous colored bridges on Neva River whilst enjoying views of Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasilyevsky Island, and the Summer Garden. This is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to take in all the beauty that St. Petersburg has to offer. 

This tour also only takes around an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit your favorite spots throughout the day!

5. Discover Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

One of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

This former Russian Orthodox Church was completed in 1907 and is built in Baroque, Neoclassical, and Russian Revival design. It is one of the city’s main attractions, with ornate domes, intricate frescoes, and 7,500 square meters of mosaics inside. 

If you don’t wish to enter, you can gain incredible views from Griboedov Canal. But if you do venture inside, you’ll be rewarded with interior frescoes and mosaic works depicting biblical scenes and figures created by celebrated Russian artists of the time.

The Church of the Saviour of Blood is built on the spot where Emperor Alexander 2 was assassinated in 1881 – hence the name. So, not only will you be able to appreciate the fine architectural designs, but also explore an important part of Russian history. 

6. Take a Rooftop Walk-in St. Petersburg

If you have viewed the city from canals and rivers, try it from the rooftops! You can take a guided rooftop walk in the city, seeing streets and skylines from an elevated perspective.

One particular tour to highlight is the Official Rooftops Excursion of St. Petersburg. Just a few minutes from Nevsky Prospect, these sites offer vistas of Fontanka River and Trinity Cathedral – and that’s just the first roof.

The second roof boasts views of St. Petersburg’s old center, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

This is a truly incredible way to see the city in all its glory, plus the tour provides you with binoculars so you can see everything in great detail.

7. Admire Nevsky Prospect’s Magnificent Architecture

The main street of St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. Begin at the intersection at Stroganov Palace before venturing to Kazan Cathedral. While you walk, take in the monuments dedicated to Catherine the Great and browse goods at The Passage – Nevsky Avenue’s premier department store.

This store was quite the trailblazer. It opened its doors in the late 1840s and was one of the first buildings in Russia to use gas for lighting. Then, in 1900, an electric station was installed on an underground floor.

Once you’ve finished shopping and enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee, continue to the Russian National Library – the oldest public library in Russia – and Alexandrinsky Theatre (which was built for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg).

8. Visit the Island of Peter and Paul Fortress

Set on an island connected by bridges, Peter and Paul Fortress is instantly recognizable from its needle spire, which dominates the skyline. The fortress was originally built to defend the maritime city from Swedish invaders.

However, Peter the Great defeated the opposition before it was even completed! It has since served as a military center and prison for political dissenters and, latterly, as a museum.

Inside the vast complex, you can see Peter and Paul Cathedral, visit the resting place of the Romanovs, and watch military processions or the firing of the noon-day gun.

It’s a great day trip for anyone interested in Russian, maritime or military history. There are also plenty of group walking tours available. 

9. Sample Russian Vodka in a Ryumochnye

A visit to Russia wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local drink – vodka, and the best place to do this is in a Ryumochnye. This is a specific style of 19th-century Russian drinking house that not only offers some of Russia’s best vodka but also a short history lesson.

You could call it a bar, but it’s more than that – most mainstream Ryumochnye have a definite Soviet vibe and are places for working men to kick back and enjoy vodka with their buddies.

Beverages come in bottles or shot form, and some places offer self-service and snacks.

If that sounds too hardcore for your taste, there are updated versions of Ryumochnye in the city, like Mayak in St. Petersburg, where you can gain a similar experience. 

10. Enjoy local Saint Petersburg Craft Beer

Although most people think of vodka when visiting Russia, you can also enjoy some of the best craft beer in Saint Petersburg . Russia’s second-largest city has an exciting, rapidly growing craft beer scene, in part due to its history and geography.

Historically, the Russian empire was influenced by Northern Europe, and the Dutch & English beer-drinking culture eventually made its way here. Today, Saint Petersburg is home to a growing number of modern microbreweries, cool taprooms, and stylish bars.

Saint Petersburg is also home to Stepan Razin Brewery, the oldest brewery in Russia (now, of course, owned by Heiniken). It opened in 1795, but today the building is known as the Saint Petersburg Beer Museum, showcasing the history of beer in Russia and the Soviet Union.

Russia’s largest and most popular brewery, Baltika, is also located in Saint Petersburg, and it’s possible to take a tour of their huge brewery.

11. See the Majestic Catherine Palace

A stately palace of blue and gold, Catherine’s Palace is located 26 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. Named after the wife of Peter the Great, this place was originally a two-story modest building commissioned in 1717.

The exterior, which stretches for one kilometer in circumference, is surrounded by woodlands, lawns, gilded balconies, and reliefs. However, the interiors are even more impressive.

With great halls, a white dining room, an amber room, and more. It’s the perfect place to step back into history and discover what life was like as a Russian aristocracy.

12. Explore Peterhof Palace

If you’re going to visit Catherine Palace, you should tour Peterhof too. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you can even take a hydrofoil speed boat from right behind the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg center.

Sitting close to the Baltic Sea, Peterhof Palace was constructed by Peter the Great to be Russia’s version of Versailles. The opulent residence surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and tiered staircases leading to the grand entrance evokes mystery and the history of a bygone era.

Inside it is lavishly decorated with dazzling chandeliers, one-of-a-kind artworks and beautiful ceiling frescoes.

On a guided tour, you can learn more about the palace’s history. Discover the Throne Room, Portrait Hall and Peter the Great’s Oak Study. You’ll see dining rooms set for dinner, grand ballrooms where dancing and gatherings would take place, and décor which defies time.

The palace offers great insight into his life and legacy, and if you are interested in history, art and interior design, you’ll love it.

13. Spend a Day by the Finnish Border at Vyborg

Just over an hour from central Saint Petersburg by train is the city of Vyborg. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and was first settled back in the 12th century. The city has been occupied by Finnish and German forces and suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. However, it has since been rebuilt. 

It’s a charming center to wander around, with narrow cobbled streets, a medieval castle, and Finnish art nouveau structures sprinkled throughout. An easy day trip from St. Petersburg, it can also serve as a stop-off point if you’re crossing into Finland to continue your adventure.

It’s also possible to travel to St. Petersburg by train. The most popular (and most frequent) routes operate from Moscow, Helsinki, and Tallinn. However, there are options to travel from other areas in central Europe, central Asia, and eastern Europe by rail.

There is a central bus station in Saint Petersburg, with services to and from Moscow, Pskov, Novgorod, Vilnius, Riga , Tallinn and Helsinki. Some of these journeys can be long and arduous.

Therefore, thorough research and choosing the right bus company is important.

Baltic Sea Cruises also operate to St. Petersburg as part of a larger itinerary, and St. Peter Line Ferry sails from Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia.

Which hostel did you stay at? I am potentially thinking of going to Russia for World Cup 2018 after my World Cup trip to Brazil two years ago. Saint Petersburg is one of the host cities, and so I am very interested in learning more about this city and recommendations from fellow travellers who have been.

I stayed at Soul Kitchen Junior, and I will go so far and say its by far the best hostel I have ever stayed at!! Anywhere in the world, no other hostels even get close to it:)
