Where The Hell Has Hank3 Been?

Moving, that’s where. Fans have been wondering where the third generation country performer has been for the past 18+ months after a prolonged touring hiatus, and no new album since Brothers of the 4X4 and A Fiendish Threat back in 2013. Hank3 already told us previously he needed to recoup his investment in his last two albums before he could release another, but the reason he’s been off the road lately is because his home life has been in upheaval.

Though no reason was given for why he was moving, Hank3 explained to SiriusXM’s Alamo Jones that he’s vacating his semi-famous “Haunted Ranch” in east Nashville. And packing and hauling all his accumulated stuff has proved to be a herculean effort.

“Been having to rebuild camp,” Hank3 said as he co-hosted a show with Alamo Jones from the famous Jack Clement Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa in Nashville. The show aired last Saturday (1-16) on Outlaw Country Channel 60. “No camp, no war. So once the camp is officially taken care of, we’ll be back in the trenches … Musical gear and all that stuff just piles up. You hold on to everything. It’s almost like homesteading in its own sort of certain way.”

So when might Hank3 finish his move and hit the road again?

“Yeah, it’s coming man,” he says. “First thing we’ll do when it’s not even half way set up, we’ll try to do a run, just to see what crew is gonna make it back, and who’s not, and all that fun stuff. But it’s around the corner for us.”

Hank says he had a difficult time finding a new place that would meet all of his criteria. That’s one of the reasons things have taken so long.

“It’s got a little bit of everything man,” he says of his new compound. “We’ll be able to … hell we could grow our own tobacco if we wanted to out there … After 10 years on the road I’m like ‘Well, I’m at least gonna ride on a bus. If I’m pulling 14 guys with me, we’re gonna be able to sleep at night … So just getting a 45-foot bus with a 16-foot trailer up on a ridge? If it ain’t laid out right it ain’t gonna happen. And since we rent we don’t own, half the rock stars out there are bus drivers, the bus driver doesn’t want to pull up in there, well we might have a problem. So I try to make it easier for the bus drivers and the crew, and think about the long haul more than anything. So I think we got a good spot to deal with all that drama.”

On a sad note, one of country music’s famous dogs and the pride of Hank3’s household has passed away. His beloved hunting dog Trooper is no more. Alamo Jones asked Hank3 if he had any plans to get a new tattoo, and Hank told him he planned one in tribute to Trooper.

“Man I only get a new tattoo when things are really really bad. And I gotta get one here soon to commemorate old Trooper, so that’s probably going to be my next one when I’m ready. I always go up near Ft. Campbell and do it up around there. I got his paw print. I dipped his paw in ink and let him walk around on paper, so The Trooper will be walking with me the rest of my life … He was great. He’s been on the bus, been on the road, been in the studio. He held it all down … He was half black and tan, half doberman. I found him at Sonic in Poplarville, Mississippi driving back from New Orleans. We had some good times. I said we did it all.”

Hank3 is also known for helping to rescue dogs and help fundraise for stray adoption organizations in middle Tennessee.

“I’ve [still] got two official old school [dogs] that are mine, Mama and Royal. And then I got two rescues I found over in White’s Creek area. So I got a Catahoula hound I’ve been working with, and a small kind of pit [bull] I found off of Briley Parkway. Those are keeping me on my toes for now.”

Does he mean “hoarding?”

My understanding was he had a full on recording studio out there which I’d imagine is a ton of shit in and of itself, much less a whole farm / compound worth of stuff

My dog passed recently too that had gone everywhere / done everything with me for 10+ years so I can relate, honestly one of the toughest things I been through…been thinking about tribute tattoo ideas…hang in there iii shit can only get better!

My grandfather used to tell a story about being in the Hurtgen Forest in WWII. He hadn’t had a letter from home in months. When he finally got a letter, it went on with the regular pleasantries and then his mom wrote that an aunt and uncle had passed away in the past few months. After the signature there was a post script that said something to the effect “And I’m also sorry to tell you that your dog passed away.” My grandfather told me that his aunt and uncle passing away had no effect on him, but he was broken up by the news that his dog had passed away.

As a musician, no: it’s not hoarding. Things build up, though. Any musician worth his/her salt has a whole bunch of junk laying around.

It’s crazy, when “Brothers Of The 4×4” came out, I didn’t know about Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, or Sturgill Simpson. It was that long ago.

Definitely a while ago…fwiw they’ve all been putting in work since well before then and it’s fucking amazing to see them actually / finally getting some recognition (i.e. Steeldrivers, Drive-by truckers / 400 unit, Sunday valley)

Sad to hear about Trooper. I’ve been curious though as to why he’s ramped up the shilling and selling on his Facebook page. I thought he was still trying to recoup from his last album, but I guess moving is a good reason.

Ah, sad to hear about Trooper, that dog had a great life with Hank and on the road I am sure, weird, lately I thought about Trooper, how he would be, now I know….Good that he still has the other dogs….and moving is a big thing on itself let alone with all the music things and all, will be great if Hank will tour again soon. Best of the best wishes to Hank III. Last week I sent a message to Sirius Outlaw radio because I would love to listen as well, but appearantly that is not possible in countries other than the USA and Canada. I asked them if it could be also a podcast, maybe with subscribtion, but I have no answer from them yet. Hopefully it will be possible to listen to the program I am really interested in the Outlaw program.

Hank3 is a real respectable gentleman, in his own way.

I love hearing about his rescue dogs, one of mine is getting ready to go home also.

I’ve been wondering why III hasn’t been touring. I can’t wait to see him again! Sad to hear about Trooper. III’s songs about him are some of my favorites. Gonna crank up some Troopers Holler and Looky Yonder Comin when I get home tonight.

Yes, there was a sever fire there a few years ago, but they rebuilt.

Those dogs of yours don’t care about you. If they go without food for a few days or things get rough they will turn on you in a heartbeat. People need to realize animals don’t feel emotions so they should stop thinking they do. They cant help you in any way.

I have worked with, and around animals all my life. (63 years) Based on my career, and in my personal life, the mammals I have been around can display emotions very strongly. Do you have any scientific background with animals, or does the name Wind Talker mean what I think it means?

What do you think my name means, explain. I grew up on a ranch in montana and am currently working at a ranch. I have been around animals all my life. Science is they live and they die and I don’t care which they are as long as they leave me alone. Truth is I hate dogs and see them for what they are instead of how others see them. They aren’t all cute and innocent. But anyways why am i typing this cause you will still disagree wtih me and I dont care what all you dogs ass lickers think about me.

More importantly, dogs are disgusting and extremely annoying.

We’re talking about an animal that eats other animals’ droppings, and then these loser dog owners let them lick their faces.

They bark constantly and then these dumb suckers take them into stores and when they get told to leave they complain because the dog they shouldn’t have brought in the car will be cold. LEAVE YOUR DOG AT HOME.

They specifically chew on stuff and in general do whatever they like, because they know that the owners will fall for that guilty face they’ve pulled off. They’re deceivers.

PLUS they are so totally dependent on people for their basic nutritional needs that most dogs that have ever lived with people can never survive on their own. If they aren’t born and raised wild they are totally incapable of providing for themselves.

I know he had alot of things plus a home studio I hope he found the perfect place I’m dying to hear some new stuff I think Ghost to a ghost was awesome I hope he puts out something alot like it next but I just want to see another tour tnst comes to Norfolk,Va that last show was incredible!

I was really pleased to see his post on New Year’s Eve about hittin the road soon – his shows almost always rank as best night of the year for me. Really looking forward to a new album as well… And I hope he eventually records some more stoner/doom metal.

Can’t wait for their camp to be re built. I hope also that they do tour again. Been wanting to see Hank 3 for along time now. Missed him last time he came to town. I live in south Florida an hope to see Hank Williams III and his fellow musicians come to town 2016.

Thanks for the update on Hank3! I was hoping for a tour marking the 10th anniversary of Straight to Hell. But, I’m guessing 3 isn’t the kind to stand of ceremony. The landscape has changed the last couple of years. It will be interesting to see how Shelton fits in when he re-emerges. I’d argue The Outlaw Station on Sirius and SCM exist because of his music, so there will always be a vehicles for his music to be heard.

Glad to hear that he’s getting back out on the road. I was starting to wonder what the heck was going on after not seeing any tour dates for some time, no news about an album and seeing that he wasn’t a part of the Superjoint reunion. Good that he’s getting back out there. Bummer to hear about Trooper, though.

Nothing but the best to Hank III. Looking forward to new tunes and gigs. Sorry about the dog. Only worthless douchebags don’t like dogs. I hope the new digs work out well. Hank III is a true talent straight to hell will always be one of my favorite records of all time.

Some jerk ran over my dog last week as well. I really haven’t stopped moving long enough to accept it yet. I loved her she was a good dog loved my kids listenedcreal good and she was beautiful. Prolly gonna write a song about it instead of tattoo though. Sorry for those that lost their dog. Hope to hear new music soon.

Last 2 albums weren’t all that great……

I thought the last album was excellent and GTAG has a few of his best songs but not a great flow.

They were actually horrible and I’d like a refund from Amazon. Not sure if I’m a Hank III fan anymore or not, though I used to be a diehard.

Sorry to hear about trooper My grandma gave me a little mixed puppy her neighbor gave her . He was one of 9 puppy’s the other 8 were all white like her & he was all black and she refused to let him nurse so my grandma took him as a tiny new born as feed him with a droper till he got big enough to eat & then she gave him to me .. He died at the grand old age of 21 .. My first dog & I will always love him .. & will be SOOO glad to get to come to one of your concerts !!! Can’t wait

We need you Hank!

I believe 3 is finished. He burned himself out, took some time off, and the longer he took, the more distant he became. It happens. Its not an easy life. I am only guessing, of course, but it has been years since he has done anything and hardly a word. I do wish he would at least tell everyone that he is retired, or whatever. All the best, either way.

Still holding out hope, although what I’ve heard both from this site and others “somewhat in the know” is not promising.

He and Jamey Johnson must be in the WPP.
