Day Trip Itinerary To Halong Bay: A Travel Guide Blog

Last updated on June 24th, 2024

Planning a trip to Ha Long Bay and don’t know how to start? This Halong Bay Travel Guide will tell you everything you need to know in this detailed itinerary. Learn when to go, where to stay, what to do, and a must-see attraction during your trip.

When visiting Vietnam, a trip to the stunning Halong bay or Ha Long Bay is absolutely unmissable by all those traveling in Northeast Vietnam and the Hanoi area. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to emerald waters and infinite towering limestone isles, islets, and caves topped by lush rainforests. All aging 20 million years! This is Vietnam’s most popular attraction and it attracts thousands of visitors for a day trip or multiple-day trips from around the world.

For a first-time visitor , it can be a bit confusing if you planning a trip to Ha Long Bay especially since there are an overwhelming number of tours to choose from. We were lucky and visited Halong Bay twice for my past travel experience.

Our first visit to Halong Bay is on a few years back when we backpacked in Vietnam. It was a rush trip as we only find our overnight tour when we landed in Hanoi. As we didn’t do many surveys before our visit, the money we paid was quite expensive although the journey is very memorable and joyful. With this experience, my recent visit to Halong Bay is a day trip cruise with everything well organized. Both trips gave me different experiences but one thing for sure is we have a wonderful time in Halong bay with its breathtaking scenery.

Below you can check out my Halong Bay travel guide details with some of the recommended Ha Long Bay tours from Hanoi to help you plan your Ha Long Bay itinerary!

Pre-Trip Essential

Halong Bay Pre-trip Essential

As usual, I am planning for a self-DIY Halong bay itinerary . But looking through all the information and resource, I ended up deciding to join the Halong Bay cruise tour. The reason is very straightforward. It is hassle-free and save me tons of traveling time and money.

Here are a few facts and tips when planning a Halong bay itinerary:

We recommended getting to Halong bay by joining a tour. The public transport is not well-connected where you need to transfer and ride a taxi in order to get to the pier. It will be ended with an extremely long traveling time and it cost you even more compared with joining the tour.

A day trip to Ha Long Bay is possible, but in my opinion, it’s best enjoyed on an overnight cruise, either 2 days or 3 days. Despite the long journey to get there, Halong Bay deserves to be explored at a slow pace and get out of the most.

Definitely worth it for the scene! This is a must to do excursion in Vietnam especially when you are visiting the Northern region to Hanoi.

Cruise Tour in Halong Bay

Cruise in Halong Bay

Cruising in Halong Bay is the most popular way to experience this wonder of nature. Being the most popular attraction in Vietnam, this is a fact that there are many local tours available, and all the tours provided you’ll find in the Vietnam travel agencies. You can choose to reserve online, from local or home country travel agencies, and even from the hotel where you stayed in Hanoi.

While getting to Halong bay twice in my experience, my sincere advice and tip are to book your tour from a trustworthy tour company. We booked our Halong Bay Day Cruise from Hanoi through Klook . The tour agency is running the tour many years of experience with great reviews and happy customers. Most important, the fair is good and all the expenses and services are clearly stated.

Alternatively, you can also check out Viator – a TripAdvisor company with those reputation companies I can vouch for!

Local Selling Things in Halong

Next, you might be debating how many days should I spend in Halong bay . Should I get the luxury cruise or just a simple cruise? Well, it is depending on you. In general, a Halong bay trip usually goes for 1, 2, or 3 days. You can choose from a day trip from Hanoi, 2-day or 3-day overnight cruise for a basic tour or luxury tour if you wish. The services is depending on how much you are ready to spend.

We will explain in detail what you should be expecting when booking a tour to Halong bay to help you make up your decision.

Day Trip To Halong Bay

Tour to Halong Bay

If you are on a tight budget or don’t have a lot of time, my advice for you is to go on a Ha Long Bay day tour instead. It is very totally feasible and easy to take a 1 day Ha Long Bay tour from Hanoi. In fact, this is the most popular day trip from Hanoi with many people are departing to Halong Bay every day.

If this is your decision for a day trip to Halong Bay, here is our recommendation:

  • Small Group Halong Bay Day Tour from Hanoi [Route 1] – Most Popular!
  • Halong Bay Deluxe Cruise from Hanoi [Route 2]

Halong Bay Travel Guide : Bear in mind that the journey from Hanoi to Halong Bay took up to 3 hours each way which means a total of 6 journeys in total for a return within one day. So basically you merely have around 4 to 5 hours on the cruise if you are doing a day trip.

Halong Bay Overnight Tour

So if you have a little more time, you might want to check my sections below on multiple-day tours! For me, 2 days is fairly enough on a trip to Halong Bay unless you truly want a serene time for an additional day. But it is really up to your decision and interest.

  • All-Inclusive 2 Day/1 Night Cruise in Halong Bay – Reputation Customer Review in TripAdvisor !
  • 5 Stars Halong Bay Cruise with private balcony and bathtub .

Halong Bay Travel Guide : Beware that some the overnight cruise can offer very cheap prices. But always remember what get what you paid. That cruise is usually dirty and most activities and food are not included. You will need to pay extra to enjoy the activities and meals that are usually more expensive. So it might end up you are feeling getting scammed. We truly advise you understand what is included in the package to avoid an unhappy journey.

Things To Do in Halong Bay

What To Do in Halong Bay

There are many activities to do in Halong Bay that are offered as part of Ha Long Bay Cruises selected. Some tours offer many stops and keep you moving the whole trip whereas others allow you to rest and take in the views. Let’s take a look at what to do when you are visiting Ha Long Bay.

Cruising through the serene Ha Long Bay is definitely a must-do. There are well over 1,600 islands and islets, which offer spectacular seascape views of limestone mountains surrounded by emerald green water.

Must-See Attraction in Halong Bay

Swimming – We swam in the water in Halong Bay on my trip a few years back. That is truly a fun time that I still remember now. Unfortunately, this is not somewhere you’ll want to swim as there is quite a bit of garbage in the water. So we ended up giving up this option my the recent trip. Maybe this is a better option if you are doing the overnight cruise when you will cruise into a deeper area.

Don’t forget your swimwear if you planning to get into the water. It’s very easy to get changed on the tour boats.

Kayaking in Halong Bay

Things To Do in Ha Long Bay

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose kayaking. This is one excursion you will never regret! Please note that your things can get wet, or you may lose your items in the water.

Kayaking in Halong Bay

Some of the tours will be stated that kayaking is included as part of the activities, else you might need to pay extra if you want to have this activity.

Cave Visiting in Halong Bay

Cave Visiting in Halong Bay

Caving visit is one of the popular activities usually included on the excursion tour. The steps aren’t as challenging as they appear and there are stages where you can rest and catch your breath. You can climb to the top of the mountain and enjoy the splendid view.

Truly a must-do for your Halong Bay visit. Take note that a cave visit is not permitted due to the weather condition and high tide.

My Trip To Halong Bay

A Visit to Ha Long Bay

My day trip to Halong bay was a surreal experience. Our journey started in the early morning when the tour was organized to pick up us from the Hanoi hotel with a tour bus. It is a weekday but there are half full for the minibus with approximately 12 people together with us. The journey took us about 3 and half hours before we joined the others and boarded the cruise ship.

Halong Bay itinerary - Enjoy breathtaking View

A cruise through gigantic limestone karsts was like a dreamy escape. The cruises include several activities, such as kayaking, cave visits, and the opportunity to climb to the peak of Titop Island for breathtaking views and photo opportunities.

During the cruise, we were taken through the most beautiful Bay spots to enjoy the beautiful view. The cruise was soothing. We also stopped on the bay for kayaking and a cave visit to explore the limestone karsts.

For the food, they offered a Vietnamese lunch and afternoon tea which are included in the package. It was very delicious and filling with variety of choices. We have a very satisfying lunch and it’s also the best time to meet new friends from other countries too! Our guide can speak very good English and he is very accommodating and approachable.

Sunset in Halong Bay

Sunset in Halong Bay

Sharing my overnight cruise in Halong Bay with picture captured during sunset.

A day cruise is too rushed as the day cruise will try to pack your time with tons of activities. We enjoyed the time on the sundeck, soaking up the atmosphere, and the sunset. The bay during the sunset is extremely beautiful. Probably that is the reason you might think of an overnight cruise in Halong Bay.

Handy Halong Bay Travel Guide Tips

It’s honestly a must-visit in Vietnam even though it is touristy and it can get crowded. Again, the best way to explore Ha Long Bay is on a cruise. I wholeheartedly recommend doing thorough research before booking yours. Make sure to read reviews because there are really a lot of bad tour companies.

Prepare in advance with the change of clothes and swimwear for swimming. Sunblock, waterproof bags, and something to secure your phones if you planning for kayaking. Lastly, bring a good sneaker if you are joining the cave visit and hiking activities along the cruise journey.

Overview: A Visit To Halong Bay

That’s it for my comprehensive Halong Bay travel guide blog. In short, a trip to Halong bay was truly essential and wonderful when visiting Vietnam. It is a truly remarkable place and you should make every effort to see it. The breathtaking view deserves to be explored at a slow pace. But if a day is all you have, you may as well give it a go and try to make the most.

It was an amazing trip to Ha Long Bay and highly recommended . We were hesitating due to the money and time spent on the traveling but turned out that is the best experience that we had when visiting Vietnam. And that’s the reason we visited twice and still looking to come back another round!

Halong Bay Day Tour: Which Is Best For You? 2024

by Jade Mortimer

Halong Bay Day Tour views of huge rock formations from the water

Choosing a Halong Bay day tour can be a little overwhelming when you have so many boat options. We’ve picked out the top 10 trips so you can find your favourite to book in just a few minutes!

halong bay day trip blog

Ha Long Bay & Ti Top Island Cruise

We chose this exact Halong Bay day tour because of the great reviews! The trip was great – we enjoyed kayaking, hiking and exploring a cave, plus the boat journey was relaxing and comfortable. The food was decent and we highly recommend that you check it out!

A Complete Halong Bay Day Tour - WITH KAYAKING - [Go Asia Travel]

Halong Bay is one of the most popular places to visit when travelling to Vietnam. There are stunning islets to view, caves to explore and hiking trails too – and don’t forget the incredible sunset views here!

Taking a day tour to Halong Bay is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to visit this picture-perfect UNESCO World Heritage site, so take your time reading our top tips, recommendations and opinions!

Disclosure: We were guests of Go Asia Travel for this Halong bay day tour, but all opinions are our own!

Our Halong Bay Day Tour With Go Asia Travel Review

Our Halong Bay day tour began with a bus pickup at 8.45 am. We were originally told to be ready at 9:15 am but the bus arrived earlier than this, so do give yourself a bit of extra time to be ready just in case. Luckily we decided against going out for breakfast before our tour and were sat in the hotel lobby anyway when the bus arrived.

It took around another 45 minutes to drive around the Old Quarter collecting all of the other guests, and then we were on our way!

The bus was very comfortable and we had plenty of legroom – yep, even us Daddy Long Legs! Our guide Ivan was fantastic – he gave us lots of information about Vietnam and managed to make us laugh the whole time he was talking.

I think it makes a difference when you feel comfortable asking your tour guide anything, and Ivan really did make everyone feel welcome and was open to all of our questions.

After only 20 minutes, we stopped for a toilet/coffee break. We didn’t really think it was necessary as we already knew we’d be stopping again in about an hour. However, it made more sense when we stopped the second time as we realised that the point of this next stop wasn’t to use the bathroom, but to buy pearls from the pearl farm.

We were told that everybody HAD to get off the bus so that the bus driver could drive round to the pickup point. There is no need to stop twice in a 3-hour journey, so I think this was just a way of getting everyone closer to the shop – and I wish that the staff were transparent about this!

Saying that though, we weren’t pressured to buy anything and there were bathroom and toilet facilities to use if you needed them.

Once we arrived at the port, we were taken to our boat and shortly after arriving, we were on our way!

Lunch was served as we sailed to Halong Bay, and we enjoyed a decent selection of Vietnamese cuisine. I asked for a vegetarian meal, and I was given a whole plate of tofu bits and pieces, noodles, eggs, bread and nuts! I was impressed with the amount of food I had been given, plus there was seafood, rice and vegetables on the table for everyone to share.

One thing I would say is that although plenty of food is included in the price, drinks are not – even water – and I don’t think that’s fair. We did receive free water on the bus but we’d finished that by the time we arrived to Tuan Chau harbour.

You should have to pay for beer and soft drinks on the cruise, of course, but I think that water should be handed out freely, especially as it can get so hot! A small bottle of water cost 20,000VND which won’t break the bank, but you’ll definitely need more than one so that costs can add up.

Bring a few large bottles but make sure that you keep them on the boat – you won’t be allowed to take plastic bottles onto the island (and rightly so!)

Boat in distance in Halong Bay

Cruising around Halong Bay was brilliant – it’s such a beautiful place so don’t forget your camera ! Ivan talked to us about some of the different rock formations and showed us the rocks that you can see on a 200,000 VND bank note!

The first stop on our Halong Bay day tour was Ti Top Island (or Titov Island). We had 45 minutes to spend there, with the choice of hiking up to the top of the hill to see the incredible views, cooling off in the sea or relaxing on the beach.

We chose to climb the hill and the views were stunning from the top, but in hindsight, we wished we had jumped into the sea because it was so insanely hot.

Plus, whilst on the boat, you can look at the rock formations all day, so I think swimming is a better choice because it’s something a little different. We did feel a little rushed as we had to get to the top, enjoy the view and then climb back down again all in 45 minutes, but we managed it!

Next was the kayaking or bamboo boat trip. We decided to kayak as that sounded much more fun! We actually did have a great time and I would highly recommend at least getting off the boat (some people chose to stay on rather than taking part in the activity) because the views here are literally mindblowing!

You paddle through a cave and out into a bay and I have never seen anything like it! Honestly, we were just taken aback by the beauty of the place, despite the bright little kayaks all floating around nearby.

Again, we only had 45 minutes and this time we felt like we missed out a bit because of the time it took to get everyone onto a kayak or bamboo boat.

Check Availability Of This Exact Tour Here – With Possible Deals!

This actually isn’t something that was in Go Asia Travel’s hands – the problem here is that all of the boats arrived at a similar time (this is to do with the tide) and there just weren’t enough people to manage everyone who wanted to get in the water.

View from behind woman kayaking in Halong Bay

This would be an issue regardless of the boat trip company you chose – it’s just something to be aware of when booking a Halong Bay day tour. Make sure you’re ready to get off the boat quickly, grab a life jacket + paddle, and get to the jetty as quickly as you can!

Even if you don’t want to kayak (or if you have young children) then I’d still highly recommend getting on a bamboo boat to explore the area!

Bamboo boat in Halong Bay

The final stop was to the caves – and we were actually so impressed! We thought that we’d pop into a little cave, look around and leave, but they are HUGE and so fascinating! It’s also much cooler inside the caves so we had a little respite from the heat which was very welcome.

Inside caves

This activity didn’t feel rushed at all – we had a pleasant walk through the caves, stopping to look closer every now and then, and to take photos, and we timed it perfectly to be back on the boat with everyone else.

The cruise back to the port was lovely as we were able to watch the sunset through the rocks – it was such a peaceful and beautiful time to reflect on the day.

Watching the sun set at Halong Bay

Overall, we had a great time on this Halong Bay day tour and would recommend it if you only have one day free for a cruise. There is plenty to squeeze in, but to be honest I think that is to be expected when you have to drive so far to even begin the tour.

My favourite part of our Halong Bay day tour was the kayaking – definitely choose this option if you can! We really enjoyed our day and won’t forget the outstanding beauty of Halong Bay in a hurry!

How To Choose The Best Halong Bay Day Tour

Most of the Halong Bay day tours have a similar itinerary, but there are some small differences in what you get for your money, as well as the quality of the boat.

Things like hotel pickup, kayaking and the bamboo boat are sometimes optional extras, which is good if you would prefer not to do them so you don’t pay for something you’re not experiencing.

Kayaking in Halong Bay - view from behind woman

Most people stay in Hanoi before their Halong Bay day, but if you’re actually staying in the Halong Bay area (Tuan Chau Island for example) then book a tour that doesn’t include pickup to save yourself some money. When you are booking on GetYourGuide or Viator, choose your dates and then you will see the different options to include pickup or not.

Where is Ha Long Bay?

Halong Bay isn’t particularly close to any other tourist destination in Vietnam. It’s in the northeast of the country, about 170km east of Hanoi. It takes around 2.5 hours to drive straight from the Old Quarter to the port – however, the tour buses will stop at least twice for toilet breaks (and Pearl Farm visits!).

The average journey time for a Halong Bay day cruise from Hanoi is 3 hours. It’s a decent drive – the recent opening of the expressway has cut the time on the road almost in half!

How To Get To Halong Bay

Most Halong Bay day tours offer free pick-up from the Old Quarter of Hanoi as it’s a popular area with travellers. However, if you’d rather make your own way to the harbour instead, or your tour doesn’t offer pickup, there are a few ways to get there.

I’ve listed these in order of ease, but obviously, price is a factor for most people too so I’ve given an approximate cost for each method.

There are public buses but to be honest, it’s not too much cheaper to get a shuttle bus and it’s much simpler!

Read More: How To Check Out The Hanoi Night Market

Shuttle Bus

Speak to your tour company to see if they can pick you up for a fee (if they aren’t including it in your Halong Bay day tour). This applies especially if you’re not staying in the Old Quarter of Hanoi!

If they don’t offer a shuttle bus from where you’re staying, check the form below for a good deal on your journey, or click this link .

Taxi/Private Car

Download Grab as soon as you arrive in Vietnam – it will make your life much easier! You can book a taxi to pick you up in Hanoi and take you all the way to Halong Bay, and you can book one for our return too.

If you’d prefer you can always ask your hotel and they’ll find you a driver. Keep the price above in mind so that you aren’t ripped off!

This is a slow way to visit Halong Bay, and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it unless you have all the time in the world!

Just turn up to the train station to buy your tickets, and enjoy the pretty views on the way.

What Does A Halong Bay Day Tour Include?

As I mentioned before, most of the Halong Bay day tour trips are similar but be careful that you’re booking a tour that includes everything you need it to.

Boats in Halong Bay

On a standard day tour to Halong Bay, you can expect:

  • Pick up from Hanoi’s Old Quarter
  • Water on the shuttle bus
  • Lunch (vegetarian options too)
  • Island visit
  • Kayaking or Bamboo option (pre-paid or not)
  • Return to Hanoi’s Old Quarter

If your Halong Bay day tour doesn’t include one or more of these items then I’d recommend finding a different one. Don’t forget that the pickup and kayaking might be optional, but having the choice is a good thing!

Here are the things that think are most important to bring on your day tour! Plan ahead and check our whole recommended packing list for anything else to bring to Vietnam too!

Jade has used this backpack throughout the world on our travels and we have both been very impressed with the design. It comfortably holds a 3L water reservoir in the specifically designed pouch and contours very nicely over your back to distribute the weight well. I have always had a full camera bag so Jade usually has to take enough for two people which it can do. It's a very reasonable price for a very good day pack.

GoPro HERO12 Black

The Go Pro Hero 12 takes the world-renowned Go Pro formula and hits even greater heights. The best of these has to be the Emmy award-winning HyperSmooth 6.0 for incredibly stable video during your wildest of travel adventures, and the front-facing screen for easy selfie and video capture! We have been using Anker portable chargers for years and highly recommend their easy design and reasonable size. This makes it extremely versatile and helpful for those long periods away from a socket. A must-buy for any backpacking traveller.

A decent pair of polarised sunglasses is difficult to get at a decent price, especially if you want them to look good. These from WOWSUN have lots of different styles (male/female) and colours to choose from and they are very affordable. Click through to see all of your options.

This will probably be the last selfie stick you ever buy! It has a sturdy aluminum telescopic 40" range, a tripod for propping your phone up in better locations, a detachable wireless shutter button so you can control when all pictures are taken, and extends down to a brilliantly compact size making it perfect for any type of travel.

Adidas Relaxed Fit Strapback Hat

This relaxed fit, strapback hat from Adidas is a classic that will keep the sun from your eyes and look decent whilst doing it. There's nothing special to see here, just a well made hat that gets the job done.

Microfibre Poncho Towel

Need to change on a crowded beach? No more cowering behind a normal towel whilst someone holds it up! Need a compact towel that fits in your day bag? It's got that covered too. These have genuinely been a lifesaver over the years and there are literally no downsides!

Sun Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen

We all know what sunscreen is and we all know how important it is but why go with Sun Bum? They are cruelty-free and are compliant with the Hawaii 104 Reef Act meaning that you will be helping decrease the amount of damage sunscreens have to the environment that you are swimming in. If that hasn't convinced you then click through to find out even more.

Waterproof Pouch with Waist Strap

This very affordable waterproof fanny pack is perfect for water excursions like kayaking and snorkeling but also for beach days when you don't feel comfortable getting into the water with all your valuables chilling on the sand. This one is a no-frills, 'does the job' pouch that we highly recommend to keep your valuables safe.

3L Backpack Water Reservoir

If you're into hiking, walking or general outdoor activities, then you need to grab this water reservoir for your backpack. It holds p to 3L of liquid and slides easily into the pouch in the Osprey backpacks. There's a bite valve on the straw part and has a wide opening for easy filling and cleaning.

Panasonic LUMIX LX10

How Long is a Halong Bay Day Tour?

A typical Halong Bay day tour will last for around 12 hours. It sounds like a long time but you won’t really notice it as there is a good balance of travel time, activities and time to enjoy the views.

Most tours pick you up between 8:30 and 9:30 am depending on where you’re staying. Be ready a little earlier than planned just in case – you don’t want to hold up the bus and the earlier you arrive at the harbour, the better!

You’ll return to the harbour between 5 – 6 pm, and the bus will begin its journey back to Hanoi. There is usually only one stop on the way home, but the time it takes to get back mostly depends on the traffic. Weekdays will take longer, but you’ll usually be back in Hanoi by 9 pm. Don’t book a flight or onward travel for after your Halong Bay day tour though, just in case the travel time changes.

The Best Time To Visit

Vietnam is a great holiday destination all year round, but the best time to visit Halong Bay depends on what you’re looking for!

Looking out into Halong Bay

Our Halong Bay day tour was in June which is the school holiday time! It was fairly busy on Ti Top Island and at the kayaking place, but we were able to enjoy ourselves still. If you want to avoid crowds, go later on in the summer BUT it will be the rainy season!

December – March: Busy time for foreign tourists, cooler weather

April/May – Low rainfall, quiet season

June – August: Rainy season, low season for foreigners, domestic tourists are on their holidays

September – November: Mild weather, still quite busy

Try to avoid national holidays like Tet (Lunar New Year) and the weekends as it gets much busier then.

Tips For Your Halong Bay Day Tour

Before you book your Halong Bay day tour, read my top tips to help you enjoy the day!

  • Book in advance. The Halong Bay day tours do really fill up – we travelled during a relatively quiet time compared to other years as foreign tourists aren’t fully back in Vietnam yet, and our boat was at full capacity.
  • If you bring any plastic bottles for water, keep them in your bag whilst you visit the islands/caves. You’re not allowed plastic here to protect the environment, but you can buy canned water and snacks on land. The boats serve water in plastic bottles so you should be ok to drink your own whist cruising – just dispose of them in the bin, not the water!
  • There are around 60 people on each boat. Even though your tour might only have 25 people on it, you’ll share the boat with another group so it’s just something to keep in mind if you’re only expecting a small group Halong Bay day tour.
  • Bring swimwear and a towel for the swimming and kayaking. I would also bring water shoes because the kayaking jetty can get boiling hot and you might be waiting for a while.

Where to stay in Halong Bay

If you’ve decided to stay in a hotel close to the harbour to avoid lots of travel before your Halong Bay day tour, then here are some great options. You can also read our post for more information about where to stay!

Domo Tuan Chau Hotel

More budget-friendly rooms right next to the marina

Golden Palm Halong Hotel

Newly opened with breakfast included and a bar on-site.

Paradise Suites

A bit of luxury in Halong Bay with an outdoor swimming pool and posh whisky bar

Where to stay in Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi is full to the brim of cute places to stay, and I’d recommend staying in the Old Quarter before your Halong Bay day tour. It’s a fantastic place to explore, plus it’s easiest to be picked up from there:

Dream Central Hotel

Low-budget, comfortable rooms with excellent customer service

Leah Silk Hotel

Breakfast included, good massages offered

The Oriental Jade Hotel

Rooftop pool, great location, fitness centre

If you only have one day then yes, it’s enough time to enjoy Halong Bay and its beauty. It’s a good way to spend a day and the prices are good. However, if you do have a few more days (and pennies!) to spare, then it’s better to stay overnight!

Is a Halong Bay day tour too touristy?

It’s quite a touristy tour but unless you want to fork out for a private tour (where you would still see other tourists because they’d be visiting the same places) then I wouldn’t worry too much! Places are touristy for good reason sometimes – Halong Bay is just beautiful and everyone wants to go there!

How do I get from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

Th easiest way is to ask your tour company for pickup in their shuttle bus. You can get a taxi or take the train too, but I’d recommend getting the bus.

When is the best time to enjoy a Halong Bay day tour?

April and May are relatively quiet times with mild weather, and September – November are lovely too. December to March has the best weather but will be the busiest! June – August will have fewer tourists but more thunderstorms!

How long does a Halong Bay day tour last?

The whole day tour to Halong Bay will last for about 12 hours, including the transfers to and from Hanoi.

Enjoy your Halong Bay day tour and let us know in the comments if you found this post helpful!

Ultimate Halong Bay Blog: 1 Delightful Day by Emerald Islets

Halong Bay Blog: Until we made it on the boat toward the pool of limestone rocks, I hadn’t any clue what to expect in Halong Bay. Even as we left Hanoi , my friend had told me ‘it was nice’ and I believed it.

My Vietnam trip was 2 weeks and there were so many beautiful places that I was jaded by scenic nature. Yet with Halong Bay, the trip was relaxed and gave me space to breathe in all of it.

When the boat took off I spotted the first peculiar stone islet. And then came the endless limestone islets that overwhelmed me every time we passed them. Oh, now I get what this is.

hanoi 3 day itinerary, halong bay blog, ha long bay blog

I visited Halong Bay only for 1 day while most travelers prefer to take a 2-day itinerary here. But I didn’t regret the 1-day option. It seemed quite sufficient. Read my Halong Bay itinerary planning post here.

This post, however, is my personal experience – the Halong Bay blog. Feel free to sit back for a read :)

Table of Contents

Halong Bay Blog: The Plan

Our plan was simple. We had a one-day tour booked – get to the pickup point and return that evening. The rest was taken care of. I strongly believe this is what most people pick to visit Halong Bay when going from Hanoi

You see, the World Heritage Site is hard to get to for most travelers – it’s a 3-hour drive from Hanoi, not to mention the additional ferry tickets to get around the islets. Thus it’s best to let local agencies take charge of these little day-trip packages to Halong Bay.

Evidently, these make the trip way cheaper (and easier) than getting there on your own. So we went along one too! My friend whose family lives in Vietnam booked us the day trip and we were set to go.

Picking the Ha Long Bay Tour

halong bay 1 day tour

This shot I took above is how Ha Long Bay from a trek viewpoint on any usual touristy day. As plain as the picture, there are quite several options for the cruises. Some are day tour cruises while others are luxury junk boats for longer stays.

That iconic cruise on the right-hand side with its orange sails is the Genesis cruise with its pool. Honestly, it doesn’t take over a day to get around Ha Long Bay. But it sure is nice to linger and bask in the bay’s views. The overnight trips have a few additional activities like squid-fishing at night.

Having firsthand experience of the spot, even though it was for a day, I handpicked these reasonable Halong Bay trips on Klook.com for you. Being a partner of Klook, our readers get better deals on the site, so go grab your deals today!

Refer to my Halong Bay itinerary guide to choose how many days are right for you.

Let’s dive back to the Ha Long Bay blog now.

Pick up at Hanoi Opera House

Anyone who has traveled to Hanoi knows that the Hanoi Opera House is popular for two things. The Opera House itself and then for being the most common pickup spot for travel agencies.

On a busy morning, the closed entrance is packed with tourists waiting for their guides and pick-up vans all to different places. The pickup drivers and guides on the other hand shout out the names of their day’s passengers to call them out quickly.

halong bay day trip blog

After all, most trips take over half a day just for the drive making it crucial to get going as early as possible. It was not far from a fish market – except it was the fish picking their buyers who’d paid in advance.

Traveling from Bắc Ninh ourselves (where I was staying with my friend’s family), we barely made it on time to the Opera House. In my defense, it was a 30 km morning rush on Vietnam’s public buses to Hanoi. Nevertheless, we were early for our fish (the pickup van).

The minivans, excited guides, and confused tourists reminded me of my day trip to the Mekong Delta from Saigon City .

A Sleepy Drive, Drizzle, and Indonesian friends

The minivan took off as soon as we all squeezed ourselves in. Though the space was small, the AC helped keep everyone’s composure throughout. But with my lack of sleep (like most of my nights in Vietnam), I dozed off unmindful of the squeeze.

When I woke up, we were at a highway stop with a high ceiling resembling a gas station. Everyone dispersed from the van for the brief 15 minutes or so – some headed to the restrooms while others checked out the food stalls for breakfast.

It had begun raining now, making for a muffled ambiance of the crowd taking shelter under the big roof. Among them, I stood a step away from the drizzle with a few others from our van and my friend. After making a small talk with some of the other travelers with us, we learned they were from Indonesia.

Indonesia! Me and my friend had spent a decade of our childhood in the city-island Batam Riau , Indonesia. So we indulged in the conversation in Bahasa Indonesia . There was a Kevin who was traveling solo in his mid-twenties and three girls in their thirties touring Vietnam.

Speaking Indonesian, we got along quickly.

The Cruise Ride Begins

By the time we reached the destination port, it was almost afternoon. We waited for the guide to confirm our group’s boarding and quite soon, we hopped in.

Like most of Halong Bay’s day cruises, this one was a one-floor boat with wooden dining tables and benches lined up on either side of the aisle with a view over the waters. One table could fit 5 to 6 people comfortably – so we sat in with our newfound friends.

I brushed up on my Indonesian as I spoke and they commented on it being a particular accent. I chuckled, I wouldn’t know . As we settled in, the food orders came around – a buffet of various seafood and I vividly remember it being delicious with swifts of complimenting sea breeze.

We headed up to the rooftop terrace – even then I hadn’t an idea what Ha Long Bay was all about. Facing the horizon we were headed to, it wasn’t a clear line of the sea and sky, instead, I could spot some islets in the distance.

Halong Bay must be an island we’re visiting , I thought.

Peculiar Islets of Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay blog: Fun fact – did you know one of the most searched terms regarding this UNESCO World Heritage Site is ‘Halong Bucht’ along means Halong Bay in German? I found it out long after I visited.

And I was unsurprisingly wrong. Halong Bay wasn’t an island, it was a bunch of over 1000 limestone islands and most were unnamed.

As we neared and passed through an endless trail of these, I looked closely. Unlike an island, we’d imagine these were limestone islets. They stood like stone pillars amidst the green waters with striking greens spread around most at the top.

Most had no shore, just a block of stone rising off the waters. It seemed similar to the movie scenes I’d seen of Phuket and Krabi in Thailand. Also, that James Bond movie scene… but apparently that was in Ao Phang Nga in Phuket, Thailand which looks quite similar.

Walking the Thien Cung and Sung Sot Caves

halong bay kayaking

We took a bunch of pictures on the boat before our first stop. I’m not sure if it was Thien Cung caves or the latter as both did look quite similar.

Sadly, there wasn’t anything adventurous about exploring it except for the little squeeze between rocks a few times. Most of the floor had been set up neatly with a lit pathway and steps throughout for the endless trail of tourists.

However, it was the enormous caves themselves that spiked my interest. The limestone caves weren’t only strange from the outside, but they had odd shapes inside too.

Some formations seemed like they’d been carved by someone but they were all natural. It was an extraordinary sight. No wonder it made this made it on the 7 Natural Wonders of the World!

Thien Cung caves

Trekking the Ti Top Island

Ha Long Bay blog: Considering the tropical heat, even the caves had been terribly hot. The boat’s breeze helped as we cruised off the caves and to our next stop – the Ti Top Island.

Ti Top Island was different from the limestone islets – it was that one normal island amidst the rest with a beach and steep green peak around it. Something like the Cast Away Island . Too many movie references today eh?

A crowd of people were playing by the beach with sand castles, volleyball, and swimming. Can we swim in Halong Bay? I guess that cleared the question.

However, we hadn’t much time left on our itinerary so we got straight to the peak. We were told the top viewpoint was breathtaking. So we began. This one had steps as well but with the abrupt high steps that seemed to never end, I can call it a trek.

We took a couple of breaks climbing the tiresome unfair stone pavements. Upon reaching the top, all the huffs and puffs evaporate – it was beautiful.

hanoi travel itinerary, halong bay blog, ha long bay blog

Though there were a dozen other tourists along, it was calm enough and I could listen to the breeze’s light dabbles. The waves hitting the far bottom faintly mixed with the wind’s voice. This is where I got the best of Ha Long Bay’s pictures.

We had one activity remaining and it turns out – it was kayaking! Technically, they gave us a choice between swimming and kayaking – and we picked kayaking.

Although there aren’t any sharks in Ha Long Bay, maybe you’d find jellyfish that irritate, it had been along since I had kayaked. Also, after all the leg cardio from Ti Top Island’s climb, I could work my arms out.

Let’s be honest, Kayaking is quite fun as well. So we picked up our life jackets and paddles and jumped right in. We had one hour of kayaking which sounds short. Later when our weak arms softened after a few strokes, we realized it was a lot.

Nonetheless, it was a sweet day. We joined the rest and passed through a cave entrance of sorts that opened into a large limestone lagoon. It took quite an effort only to make it to the other end.

halong bay hanoi trip, ha long bay travel blog

Our Indonesian friends joined in later in two other kayaks and we raced a little bit. Even with the hat and the sunscreen, the blistering sun didn’t fail to tan our skins. Sighs* why do I even bother?

Heading Back

Sweaty, tanned, and exhausted we returned to the boat. Our shorts were wet from the kayak seats. Already super tanned, we didn’t mind hitting the boat terrace again to dry ourselves out on the way back.

While Kevin stuck with us on the way back to Hanoi, the girls stayed back in Halong Bay. That’s another option if not a 2-day cruise package – stay at one of the hotels in Ha Long Bay. A popular choice here is the A La Carte Ha Long Bay.

As the red sunset peeked into the minivan’s windows and the scenic landscape zoomed past, my eyelids felt heavy and then shut eventually.

Halong Bay Blog: Tailpiece

The Hanoi Opera House became all familiar later. Right the next day, we returned to the same pickup spot for Trang An tour in Ninh Binh. That’s another wholesome story. Surprisingly, we met with the Indonesian friends again!

Anyway, this brings us to the end of this Ha Long Bay travel blog. If I had a chance to go to Halong Bay again… I’m not so sure. Don’t get me wrong, the spot is amazing but Vietnam is so rich with natural landscapes that I’d look forward to visiting the other parts.

Maybe I’d return for a more specific activity like snorkeling in Halong Bay – I’ve heard it’s amazing. But since I’ve missed so much in Vietnam (I’ve yet to see Cat Ba Island, Sapa, and Phu Quoc, the diver’s paradise).

titop island halong bay

Even Hoi An is something I wish to visit again as we didn’t have much time to get around (we spent too much time in Da Nang ). But with Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, it’s beautiful, but that’s pretty much it.

Is It Worth Taking A Halong Bay Day Trip? | 2023 Travel Guide

March 4, 2024 June 11, 2023

When it comes to experiencing Halong Bay , visitors sometimes face a dilemma: should they go for a day trip or remain for a longer period of time? Many people prefer to spend a few nights on a cruise ship or in a nearby hotel to completely immerse themselves in the bay’s stunning scenery. While others are constrained by time or money.

In this article, we delve into the question of whether it is worthwhile to take a Halong Bay day trip. Especially, the trips designed for foreign visitors wishing to make the most of their stay!

Best Budget Halong Bay Cruises For You!

Oasis bay party cruise halong bay, swan cruise bai tu long bay, alova cruise lan ha bay, glory legend cruise halong bay, oriental sails cruise (i) bai tu long bay, rosa cruise halong bay, azela cruise lan ha bay, calypso cruise, why you should take a halong bay day trip.

A day cruise is a fascinating option for those looking for an amazing journey when it comes to witnessing the majestic beauty of Halong Bay. In this part, we will discuss why taking a Halong Bay cruise is an excellent decision for you.

Convenience For Time-Limited Travelers

A day excursion to Halong Bay is ideal for those who have limited time in their schedule. It allows people to enjoy the spectacular grandeur of this UNESCO World Heritage Site without having to remain for a lengthy period of time.

Travelers with limited time may easily incorporate a day excursion into their hectic itinerary, making the most of their stay in the region. The availability of planned excursions is one of the primary benefits of a day trip. These itineraries eliminate the need for passengers to organize their own transportation from Hanoi to Halong .

Furthermore, the schedule is meticulously prepared to ensure that passengers see the key sights of Halong Bay in a limited amount of time.

Cost-Effectiveness

Day trips to Halong Bay are a more affordable option than overnight cruises or extended stays. Travelers on a tight budget can still enjoy nature’s marvels without breaking the bank. Visitors may save a lot of money on lodging by taking a day excursion. They can return to Hanoi the following day, with more affordable choices. Day tours sometimes include meals, lowering the cost of eating in Halong Bay.

Witness The Main Highlights Of Halong Bay

Day trips generally include visits to notable locations such as Titop Island, Sung Sot Cave, and Luon Cave. Travelers may observe the magnificence of these prominent spots and take great photographs. Even if time is limited, day tours provide an opportunity to visit the aesthetically beautiful areas that have made Halong Bay famous worldwide.

Tips For Choosing Halong Bay Day Tours

When planning a day trip to Halong Bay, selecting the right cruise could enhance your experience. Here are some valuable tips to help you make an informed decision.

Find The Trip That Fits Your Interest

It’s critical to have realistic expectations before embarking on a Halong Bay day tour. The gorgeous sails featured on travel blogs may have captured your mind. Yet, it’s crucial to realize that stepping on such sails may not be achievable on a one-day tour. Day cruises in Halong Bay are often conducted aboard double-decker junks that can accommodate up to 46 persons. Furthermore, due to time limits, most day tours will not allow you to engage in activities such as swimming, kayaking, and exploring caverns on a bamboo boat at the same time.

When finding a Halong Bay cruise at the Bai Chay pier, don’t rely completely on chance. First, at the beginning of January 2016, junks no longer depart from there. Second, going down without a strategy might lead to fraud or untrustworthy services. Instead, use the power of the Internet to find credible tour operators with outstanding ratings. Prior to booking, contact them directly to get all relevant information, such as the tour’s cost, duration, and inclusions. Taking these steps will result in a more secure and enjoyable experience.

Choose To Be Picked Up Outside The Pier Area

You will be charged $30 per person if you request to be picked up at the pier parking lot, as that is the price charged by the ports for guides. To avoid this additional charge, simply inform the booking agent that you are willing to meet outside.

Consider Your Suitable Time Length

Normally there are 4-hour, 6-hour and 8-hour tours, you should consider them carefully as each of them will offer different activities. In our opinion, the 6-hour one is highly recommended.

Visiting Halong Bay: tips to plan your cruise

Apr 18, 2019 • 7 min read

halong bay day trip blog

Dotted with jagged limestone pinnacles,  Halong Bay  is one of Vietnam’s biggest attractions. The vast majority of its 10 million visitors a year arrive aboard day and overnight cruises.

The multitude of trips on offer can be overwhelming: here’s the skinny on Halong Bay to get you started.

A collection of tour boats and cruise ships passing by limestone islands in Halong Bay

Make the most of your visit

Halong Bay retains much of the otherworldly magic conjured up by 1969 jungle-clad islands and islets rising from deep emerald waters. Getting there is increasingly straightforward, thanks to the 2018 building of an expressway connecting Halong City and Hanoi , and the opening of Van Don International Airport (with flights to Ho Chi Minh City , and international flights coming soon) a mere 50km from Halong Bay.

But the bay's popularity has taken its toll. Concerned about overcrowding, water pollution and litter, the Vietnamese government has imposed strict regulations.

Today, boats must follow one of five prescribed routes through the bay, meaning overnight cruises leaving roughly from the same place at the same time play follow-the-leader as they hit the major highlights of the bay almost in frustrating concert. In addition, swimming is only allowed at a few designated beaches, with drones surveilling the skies to make sure boat captains comply.

Especially with these rules in place, your choice of cruise can make or break your Halong Bay experience.

Luxury cruises

Want to spoil yourself? Halong Bay has some sumptuous cruise options that are basically luxury hotels on water. You’re paying for the experience of five-star amenities here – not for any particular divergence from the typical cruise itinerary – but if you want to live it up from a swanky sun-lounger while watching the sun set over a vista of craggy jungle-topped islands, you can’t really go wrong.

For a luxury cruise, bank on spending around US$300–350 for a cabin.

Pros:  It’s a serious treat. While the cost may seem high, it typically includes higher quality meals and amenities on board, such as a spa or gym, as well as entry to Halong Bay.

Cons: Those who are after good value should probably look at midrange options. Overnight trips (marketed as two-day/one-night trips) usually involve 24 hours or less on the actual boat, which can rankle given what you pay for the experience.

Budget and midrange cruises

Most Halong Bay visitors go for midrange or budget cruises, but there is a huge range when it comes to price and value for money. At one end of the scale are some ultra-budget boats where conditions are rustic at best; at the other are some excellent midrange options offering cosy hotel-style cabins, knowledgeable on-board tour guides and kayaking stops. If purse strings are tight, for facilities, comfort and safety considerations, it’s sometimes better to choose a day cruise with a midrange operator rather than a bargain-basement overnight trip.

Budget cruise prices start from US$60 per person for a day trip. Paying between US$110 and US$130 should get you a worthwhile overnight midrange cruise.

Pros: Competition is fierce, which means plenty of operators add freebies into the itinerary, such as kayaking and private minibus transfers from Hanoi.

Cons: You have to wade through a lot of options, which can be confusing. It’s worth doing your pre-trip research.

Day cruises

If you’re pressed for time, do as many locals do and see Halong Bay on a day cruise from Tuan Chau Marina in Halong City . Cruise boats can be rented by the hour (around US$30 per hour for a boat that accommodates up to 20 passengers) or you can join other passengers aboard a four- to six-hour cruise for about US$50 per person. Options vary greatly, so check whether the price includes lunch.

Pros: Day cruises are cheap and easily organised tours right on the spot in Halong City, plus there’s free entertainment on board provided by karaoke.

Cons: Can be crowded and noisy, with only time enough for a few stops. Did we mention the karaoke?

Tan stalactites and stalagmites are illuminated by red, green and yellow lights inside Hang Thien Cung, a cave at Halong Bay.

Most decent midrange Halong Bay cruises will offer an hour or so of kayaking (some charging an extra fee). Paddling around the karsts allows you to experience the limestone towers from a completely different angle: up close and without the constant thrum of an engine in the background.

For more experienced kayakers, there are also kayak-only trips. These trips are run by a handful of operators based in nearby Lan Ha Bay (off Cat Ba Island ) rather than Halong Bay itself, though Lan Ha’s islet-scattered sea has as much wow factor as Halong Bay and is much less visited.

Full-day kayaking trips from Cat Ba Island cost between US$25 and US$30 per person.

Pros: In one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, a kayak trip is a way of escaping the crowds.

Cons: On a full kayaking tour, you’re only going to see a sliver of the area. To see more, it’s a better idea to take a cruise that includes a kayaking stop.

One of the most important reasons to steer away from the ultra-budget cruises is safety. After a boat sinking (and the loss of 12 lives) in 2011, new safety regulations were brought in for Halong Bay cruise boats, but scrimping on safety does still go on with some fly-by-night operators.

In particular, check that any kayaking stops are accompanied by a guide. Because of the variable and surprisingly strong currents close to the karst islands, a safety-conscious operator won’t allow kayakers to paddle off from the boat by themselves.

A group of kayakers (equipped with life jackets and paddles) make their way through a dimly lite cave in Halong Bay

Booking tips

Most trips leave from Hanoi, but you can also base yourself in Halong City. When you're booking, bear these tips in mind:

  • The Halong Bay entry fee is US$13 per person for a day cruise and US$25 for an overnight cruise. This is generally included in your ticket, though it's worth double-checking for the cheapest cruises. Activities like kayaking and island bike rides may cost extra.
  • When comparing prices, check whether a transfers between Hanoi and Halong Bay are included, and if so, whether it’s one-way or round-trip, and if it uses the new expressway or not.
  • While the Ha Long–Hai Phong Expressway has cut travel time between Hanoi and Halong Bay to 2½ hours, that really only applies to private vehicles which don’t stop to pick up any other passengers and which don’t make the usual 30-minute comfort stop halfway through the journey. Aboard a shuttle bus, plan for a three to 3½-hour ride.
  • Check closely to see whether overnight cruise rates are priced by cabin or by person. Single travellers should expect to pay 70-80% of the full cabin price.
  • The itinerary on a one-night cruise can be very packed, with shore excursions, kayaking, swimming and hiking all included, leaving little time to actually just sit and watch the amazing scenery during daylight hours. If you have the time, a two-night itinerary is much more leisurely, with the bonus of visiting sights with fewer people around.

Chinese junks cruise by limestone islands in Halong Bay

Arranging a tour

Some recommended operators:

  • Vega Travel offers good-value overnight and two-night tours with comfortable cabins, and kayaking included. Highly recommended by travellers.
  • Cat Ba Ventures runs tours out of Cat Ba Island, taking in both Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
  • Indochina Sails has a traditional Chinese junk that’s been fully fitted out with all mod cons.
  • Handspan Adventure Travel has a proper sailing ship, so you don’t have to put up with that pesky engine hum. Handspan also runs full kayaking tours in nearby Lan Ha Bay.
  • Hai Au Aviation offers Vietnam’s only seaplane flights, including a 25-minute scenic flight over Halong Bay which presents a completely different perspective. From the air, the islands truly do resemble the undulating body of a dragon, the meaning of 'Halong'.
  • L’Azalée Private Premium Cruise has the bay’s only single-cabin cruiser for an ultra-luxe experience, but expect to pay dearly for the privilege.

One of the best times to visit Halong Bay is November – there are blue skies aplenty, temperatures are moderate and there’s a good chance of calm seas. From May to September, tropical storms can whip up without much warning. This is also high season in Halong, particularly from June to mid-August when domestic tourism peaks.

February to April is often cool and drizzly, and the fog can make visibility low, though also adds an ethereal atmosphere. Year-round, cruises and tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, or trips can be cancelled with little warning depending on the weather and sea conditions. If you’re booking a cruise, check the fine print for the refund procedures.

Ha Long Bay is also pleasant in the fall. You may go swimming from September to November because the weather is primarily sunny and mild. Additionally, there are fewer storms now.

When visiting Ha Long in June or July , storms are frequently hitting the North. When it rains a lot, the scenery is gloomier, and tourist ships are even forbidden from the sea in order to transport visitors to the bay and have them spend the night there.

5. Quick tips for Halong bay 1-day trips

halong bay day trip blog

  • The greatest time to visit Ha Long Bay is when it’s dry , not too hot outside, and especially when there aren’t any storms or raindrops. Visiting Ha Long Bay is best done in the spring and summer.
  • It could be challenging for you to plan a vacation by yourself from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay. It makes sense to reserve a day-long Halong Bay excursion. You only need to enjoy the travel in order to avoid wasting time or money.
  • Select the appropriate travel agency : Even if you are a foreign visitor with well-thought-out plans, a poor choice in travel agencies can wreck an entire vacation. My recommendation for the finest day trip is to use a Hanoi-based travel service that picks up and drops off guests at their hotels.

You should look up reputable tour companies online and study reviews from previous clients. Before leaving, you can send them an email to get the details you need, such as tour costs and schedules.

  • Choose a 6-hour (or even 8-hour) schedule on the bay rather than 4 hours when many vintage yachts are operating if you are visiting Halong Bay for a single day. You’ll have more time to take in the breathtaking scenery!
  • Clothing: If you intend to go swimming, you will need at least three sets of clothes—one each for everyday wear, evening dress, and casual wear. Bring shorts, a skirt, and a short-sleeved shirt if you’re traveling between May and October. Bring extra sweaters and coats the rest of the year because Ha Long Bay can get pretty chilly.

6. How to book a Halong Day Trip from Hanoi?

halong bay day trip blog

6.1. Online booking websites

You should read material on websites like Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor . These forum pages allow you to read about other people’s experiences and get knowledge of a list of trustworthy business names.

You can locate the timetable on these forum sites by yourself. Customers who have used trustworthy travel agencies may even bookmark or reference their websites.

6.2. Travel Agencies

It would undoubtedly be simpler if you conduct a Google search for a reliable travel agent in Hanoi . After that, you can seek direct guidance from them at their Hanoi office. You will therefore always get the greatest information at the best pricing.

6.3. Cruise operators

halong bay day trip blog

You can easily purchase tickets directly from the cruise operator if you have already decided on your preferred trip before visiting Halong Bay . Before paying, don’t forget to haggle for a low price and double-check the schedule and inclusions of the ticket.

However, you have selected a few alternate cruises so that, in the event that all of the tickets for your top pick are sold out, you can quickly purchase an alternative.

We provide various choices of Halong tour guide with the best services. We are willing to support and professional advice anytime to book our tours , thus don’t heritage to tell us!

Halong Bay itinerary: your 2-day guide

Planning the next step of your Vietnam trip? I bet the Halong Bay itinerary is on your list, and you are wondering how to organize your trip to enjoy those high and romantic mountain shapes in the middle of the sea.

As we visited that beautiful place a couple of months ago, let us share our experience of doing Halong Bay in 2 days and practical things we learned on the way.

Read also our guide to Visit Hanoi in 2 days

How to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi

Most travelers do the Halong Bay itinerary from Hanoi as it is quite close and stays in Cat Ba island. Actually, there are 2 ways to get there:

Combined ticket (includes bus and fast boat – more expensive)

In Hanoi, you will find many agencies that sell combined tickets to get to Halong Bay. The ticket includes the journey on the bus and a fast boat to get to your stay in Halong Bay. This option is usually expensive because of the fast boat. However, it is suitable if you are planing Halong Bay for 2 days.

Separate tickets for the bus and public ferry (cheapest option)

This is for sure the backpackers’ option for the Halong Bay itinerary. You can check the most recent transport options here . For the best synchronization, check the ferry schedule before booking your bus ticket.

Regardless of which option you choose, the bus ride is about 2 to 3 hours to the bay. There you either find the fast boat waiting for you. Or you have to walk to the public ferry dock. Plan at least 20 minutes walking as the public ferry is quite far from the bus stop.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

The bay is one of the famous attractions in Vietnam. So you should expect it to be crowded with tourists and cruises. As I am still a fan of the so-called shoulder season, we visited Halong Bay in February. It is good timing as most of Northern Vietnam is still relatively cold during that time, and high seasons haven’t started yet.

While planing your Halong Bay itinerary, keep in mind that the high season in Northern Vietnam is between May and November.

Halong Bay itinerary: where to stay

Halong Bay is quite a large region and one of the best places to visit in Vietnam . Actually, you can find many hotels on the islands. Depending on how far the island is, it varies the night price. We recommend staying on Cat Ba island, as most ferries go to it and also there are a lot of other activities to do there.

We stayed at Cat Ba Ong Cottages, a separate island 20 minutes away from Cat Ba. To be honest, we really enjoyed this hotel as it is cheap, calm and wonderful. It also provides free pickup service from this place. Get in touch with them for more organization.

Here is a nice post if you are looking for more information about things to do and what to eat on Cat Ba island .

Halong Bay itinerary: is the cruise worth it?

Many tourists and travelers get tempted by the idea of spending a night on a cruise in Halong Bay . Actually, you can find many convenient cruise offers in Hanoi for Halong Bay in 2 days at a reasonable price.

The bay is famous around the world, and it is one of the main attractions in Vietnam. A cruise experience in Halong Bay could be worth it when you choose the right to do it to avoid the crowds.

Alternatively, you could also spend a nightlight on a calm island with the same view and make a day trip in Halong Bay.

How to organize your day trip to Halong Bay

The first piece of advice to consider when visiting this one of Vietnam landmarks : never book your day trip to Halong Bay with your hotels. They always offer over-priced tours because they also get commissions from each customer.

In Cat Ba center, you will find many small agencies around providing basically the same itinerary. That’s why you should ask several ones and compare the prices.

The tours take almost the whole day, and it is also planned with several stops. Good to know as well that lunch included. This should be your main plan for Halong Bay for 2 days.

Final thoughts about Halong Bay

Halong Bay itinerary is a must-see on your Vietnam itinerary and is part of the best beaches in Vietnam . Just make sure you are there is good timing because of the crowd. Actually, Halong Bay in 2 days is an ideal plan for your Vietnam travel. Especially if you are starting from Hanoi, like most travelers.

I don’t see how you can go to Vietnam and not book in a cruise on Halong Bay. In my opinion, it is one of those “must-do” items that belongs on your itinerary. Unfortunately, way too often do I hear travelers complain about their experience on their cruise – which is sad really because it was one of my favorite things from all our trip to Vietnam.

Captain holding a steering wheel-of-Indochina-Junk-Sails-Cruise, Halong Bay Vietnam

In actual fact, we loved our cruises so much that we compiled a lovely guide on the  best cruise in Halong Bay  that we can recommend. I think that choosing the right cruise will have a big impact on whether you enjoy the Bay. So to ensure that you choose the cruise that is right for you, we wanted to check in with some of our favorite travel bloggers to see which cruise they chose.

Halong Bay Cruise Package Reviews by Travel Bloggers

Here are some  favourite Halong Bay Cruise  Packages as recommended by other bloggers. They include a bit of an outline about what is included in the price, as well as talk about both the positives and negatives of their experience.

Indochina Junk| 1N2D Itinerary

– Recommended by Suzanne from  The Travelbunny –

Indochina-Junk-Halong-Bay, Vietnam, woman in warm clothes posing on the deck

We explored Halong Bay with Indochina Junk on a 24-hour trip. Indochina Junk has a permit to visit a quieter part of the bay away from all the other tourist boats. Bai Tu Long Bay translates as Baby Dragon Bay and is where we spent our time in Halong Bay.

The Dragon Pearl had traditional teak paneling, ornate decoration, and areas to relax and enjoy the passing scenery. We anchored amid limestone karsts and enjoyed an excellent seafood lunch served on deck. Later, we moored near a small island and explored Thien Canh Son Cave, kayaked, and watched the sunset.

The food on board was amazing and included in the price. Some drinks were also included. Dinner was a Thai feast of epic proportions. There were around 18 guests on board.

Our cabin had a double bed and private bathroom with a shower, toilet, and basin. In the morning we got up early and watched the sunrise over Halong Bay with a steaming Vietnamese coffee. After breakfast, we visited a floating village on our way back to the port.

I can highly recommend Indochina Junk. It’s not the cheapest but it’s a first-class experience, and more importantly, a safe experience. The company is a sustainable business and has developed a ‘Green Halong Bay’ program to help protect the bay against rubbish. They have also set up a school in Vung Vieng fishing village and provide job opportunities for local people.

Note from Jolene:  We also recommend Indochina Junk, you can  read about our 2N3D Halong Bay Cruise here .

Bhaya Cruises| 2N3D Itinerary

Bhaya-Cruises-Halong-Bay, family posing for a sunset photo with rocky island in teh back

We spent a fabulous 3 days, 2 nights with Bhaya Cruises on board the Bhaya Classic II boat in beautiful Halong Bay with our two children (aged 4 and 5 at the time). Halong Bay is truly stunning, however, the Bhaya boat and staff made our experience exceptional.

We had two rooms to accommodate the four of us, both lovely and spacious with private en-suite bathrooms and generous windows to take in the views.

Everything was included with the exception of alcohol or the occasional soft drink for the kids. Right from the start, we were treated to delicious food (more than we could eat), with the amazing 5-course dinners both night’s real highlights, as well as yummy breakfasts on the deck admiring the early morning views of the bay.

Our excursions included kayaking through a beautiful cove, cycling on Cat Ba Island, visiting a traditional floating village, checking out a pearl farm (more interesting than you might imagine), swimming in the South China Sea, and an amazing cave walk on the final day. While on board we were also able to participate in a spring roll-making lesson on the top deck, tai chi each morning, and nighttime squid fishing. Pre-dinner drinks also gave us a great opportunity to meet our fellow passengers.

Was there anything that could have improved the experience? Well maybe fewer boats in Halong Bay, but it’s certainly hard to hold Bhaya responsible for that! And the extended 3-day cruise also meant that we traveled beyond most of the other boats giving us a touch more seclusion and adding to a brilliant overall experience.

Au Co Cruises | 2N3D Itinerary

– Recommended by Holly from  Four Around the World –

Au-Co-Cruises, cruise boat in the water white ship, rocky island in background, Vietnam, Halong Bay

We took a 2 night Halong Bay cruise with Au Co Cruises with our daughter, who was only 14 months at the time. We knew a Halong Bay cruise was a must for the first visit to Vietnam, however, we wanted to have the reassurance of a child-friendly cruise ship. Au Co considers itself to be a luxury cruise option, with several upgrade suite options.

We stayed in a standard deluxe cabin, which is beautifully decorated in dark wood grain and decor items. Each cabin has a private balcony so you can enjoy the view from your own cabin. We loved enjoying the tranquil afternoons before dinner with a view from our balcony.

All meals and snacks are included in the cruise cost and the food is extravagant. We enjoyed multi-course feasts and local cuisine. All excursions are also included in your cruise package, with visits to caves, a local village, kayaking adventures, and island visits during the 3-day cruise. You also get to book yourself an included session in the boat jacuzzi, situated on the deck so you can relax with incredible views.

We loved our experience, from the food to the onboard entertainment, the excursions, and the staff. They doted on our daughter the whole time and were wonderful at keeping her entertained throughout the trip and excursions. There was nothing that comes to mind that needed improving. It was a wonderful cruise experience.

Family in the cave lite up with colourful lights, Halong Bay, Vietnam

What we loved about it:  Besides being awestruck with the beauty of Ha Long Bay we especially loved the food served on our cruise. It was delicious and the staff was fully accommodating to our family’s different food intolerances. In the evening on the first day, they threw a small party and after that, we tried squid fishing. We didn’t manage to catch any squid but we all had great fun. As well as sightseeing from the boat we climbed up to a spectacular viewpoint and on the second day, we visited caves. The sightseeing was all well organized. Later, we all (including the kids) participated in a hands-on cookery class to make spring rolls, and to top it off we went kayaking.

What could have been better?:  Not much. If we had to pick, then the room was comfortable rather than “de-luxe” and for the kayaking, we had to keep up over quite a bit of distance, so it felt a bit more like exercise than sightseeing.

Emotion Halong Bay Cruise, top deck on the boat, white sun loungers, Halong Bay, Vietnam

We went as a couple on the beautiful Emotion Halong Bay cruise. The cruise along Halong Bay is breathtaking, and we thoroughly enjoyed the included activities.

Our 1-night cruise included kayaking and swimming, a tour of Sung Sot cave, and a tour of a floating fishing village. We particularly liked our cave tour – ‘Surprise cave’ is a beautiful walkable cave tucked into the edge of the bay.  There is also a 2-night cruise option if you would like to see more of Halong Bay and participate in more excursions.

We had a very comfortable room that was clean and well appointed. The bed was very comfy and I did not feel much movement on the ship.

The crew was very nice and helpful with any requests we had. Although the food was not 5-star, we enjoyed the traditional dishes and felt we got great value for the price of this cruise.

Oasis Bay Party Cruise | 2N3D Itinerary

Oasis Bay Party Cruise, Halong Bay, Vietnam, junk boat in the water

Going on a cruise through Halong Bay when visiting Vietnam is definitely a must-do. There are so many different types of cruises you can choose from; luxury, eco-friendly, adventure, or a party cruise.

When we visited Halong Bay we were backpacking with friends, so we decided a party cruise would be our best option. We chose to go with Oasis Bay Party Cruise, and we had such a great time!

If you choose the 3 days 2 nights cruise, you will spend one night on the cruise boat and one night on a private, gorgeous island. The cost for 3 days and 2 nights is $199.00USD for one person and includes accommodation in a private room on the boat the first night, and shared accommodation on the island the second night. All meals are included as well as a small cooking class where they teach you to make Vietnamese spring rolls.

On the first day the cruise boat goes to a cave where you can take your time exploring around, and then the boat stops off at some cliffs where you can enjoy cliff jumping, kayaking, and swimming. One of the best parts of the cruise is spending time on the private island where you can take kayaks and explore the karsts all around the island. Also, when it gets dark you can enjoy watching bioluminescent plankton right off the coast.

The only thing that isn’t too great about the cruise is that once you are on it, you are stuck with the group of people who also signed up for the cruise. Since it is a party cruise, make sure you want to party as that is what most everyone wants to do!

Halong Hideaway Cruise | 2N3D Itinerary

– Recommended by Patrick from  German Backpacker –

Halong Hideaway Cruise, Cat Ba Bay boat, man taking selfie on the top deck with a lot of tourists,

Deciding on the right Halong Bay cruise can be difficult, there are so many choices ranging widely in quality and price. Since I’m a solo backpacker in my mid-20ths, I didn’t want to spend a fortune and while I tried to avoid the typical “booze cruise”, it’s been important for me to have a fun and social atmosphere on the cruise. After lots of research, I decided to go on the Halong Hideaway Cruise, organized by the Central Backpackers Hostel in Hanoi.

This cruise actually takes you to a more remote part of Halong Bay around the area of Cat Ba Island, south of where the typical day tours go. While you spend the days on the cruise ship exploring the stunning nature, you will spend the night on a private island. People can decide between 2 days or 3 days on the tour, I went for the latter option which gave me an extra day where we explored one of the islands by bicycle and went on a short hike to a nice viewpoint. Besides that, there was lots of time to go swimming, kayaking, and to enjoy the beautiful landscape.

The evenings on the islands were social with music and drinking games. Summing it up, I enjoyed the tour and it’s certainly a great budget option for backpackers. However, keep in mind that the tour certainly targets a younger crowd with most people being in their late teens or early twenties (I actually felt quite old!).

Halong Princess Cruise | Day Cruise

– Recommended by Karolina from  Lazy Travel Blog –

Princess Halong Bay Cruise, man and woman dressed in red in the dining area on the boat, selfie at the table

One of the best attractions in Vietnam is the misty cruise through the limestone karsts of Halong Bay. It may be quite difficult to find the right cruising company to take you there. With so many to choose from and the possibility of being scammed, picking a reputable company is really important. After going through several reviews on Trip Advisor, we chose the Princess Cruise company which seemed to have a lot of positive reviews.

It was just me and my husband on the cruise, so it is definitely a great tour for couples.  A one-day cruise was the best option for us. The trip started early in the morning when we were picked up from the shore by small speed boats. Upon boarding, we were very much impressed by the luxurious design of the 3-tiered Halong Princess. On top of the comfortable transportation, our package included a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide, a buffet meal, and 2 sites to visit: The Surprise Cave and Tip Top Island.

What we loved about it is that we could explore the magical surprise cave. Although my husband and I loved the view from the top of Tip Top Island, it was not easy climbing up 600 steps. We can’t really say anything negative about the tour except that we wish we had more time for sightseeing.

Kangaroo Café Halong Bay Cruise | 2N3D Itinerary

– Recommended by Sarah from  ASocialNom ad –

Halong Bay Cruise, Vietnam, man sittin on the top deck of the junk boat, water and rocky island in the back

My husband and I took a 3-day, 2-night cruise to Halong Bay with Kangaroo Café Tours. While this meant we had 2 days in the area, we elected to stay one night on Cat Ba Island in order to experience land and sea.

Our price included transfers, accommodation on the boat, the island, and our food while aboard the boat. It didn’t include any drinks on the boat or island (even water), but there are drinks to purchase from the boat and also from passing market boats.

We had a private cabin, and our tour also included kayaking in the bay. The cabin was comfortable and clean if a little cramped. Our room on Cat Ba island was the same – clean, and comfortable, but small. The food provided was plentiful, but plain, not at all like the Vietnamese Food I’d become accustomed to. It’s a great way to see Halong Bay, both from the water and the land and I’d recommend it.

My only gripe was not being able to find out the prices of drinks before you actually got to the boat, even when we asked when booking we were told vaguely, ”the people on the boat will tell you that”.

Final Thoughts
