HIGHEST ALTITUDE

India ends at Gurez. The significance of this is enormous. If you look at our country as a whole, we travel upwards from Kanyakumari. There comes the point where we cannot travel any further north. That part of our country is Gurez.

The significance is that the Gurez is the last latitude of India, which is why it is very unlike any other part of Kashmir. The topography changes totally even though it is only 6 hours north of Srinagar. You will notice it in the trees especially. The trees are different, and so are the way they are laid out in the valley. The Razdan pass you cross to get to Gurez pushes you to a very different landscape. Just like how it is when you cross the Rohtang Pass in Manali. In fact, our trek in Gurez reminds us more of our treks in Kyrgyzstan and Georgia than they do of our treks in Kashmir -- so different is the landscape. We feel we are in a different locale even though we are in Kashmir.

The Gurez valley trek has astoundingly different forests, grasslands and two lovely lakes (and one we camp beside). The scenery is spectacularly unusual.

Note: This trek will be run in our Do-It-Yourself (DIY) style. Which means trekkers along with a trek leader are going to be doing the trek all without a support system. You will be helping in carrying a few of the gears and equipment as a team. So we expect your backpack to weigh about 12 kg per trekker.

Nitesh is the Chief Explorer and one of the Senior-most Trek Leaders at Indiahikes. He has led & explored the most famous treks across our country, like Bodpathri Meadows and Gidara Bugyal. He is also the mastermind behind the design of the Gurez Valley Trek itinerary. Read what he has to say about the trek here.

What I Like About the Gurez Valley Trek

1 . The scenic drive from Srinagar to Dawar

The entire drive from Srinagar to Dawar is picturesque. You get to drive on paths that are rarely accessed by tourists. You drive through the forests, the villages and the high mountains.

When you are at the Razdan pass, it feels like you are at the pass on one of the Uttarakhand treks. You are at such a height that you see forests, valleys, meadows and everything below you. It’s a beautiful sight to behold. As this was not enough, you enter the Gurez side. The views for sure take your breath away!

2 . A glimpse of the other side

Gurez is the most extreme part of our country. While trekking in Gurez, you’re at the northernmost part of India. You even see the dreamy frames of the Gilgit-Baltistan range. You see the valleys, the villages and the mountain ranges of POK. At one point, you see the villages of India and Pakistan simultaneously!

Not just the geographical location of the valley but the entire landscape of the Gurez is stunning. As the Gurez Valley is close to the borders of Tajikistan, it has flavours of both Trans-Himalayas and Kashmir Himalayas. This adds a whole new drama to the place.

Gilgit- Baltistan ranges. Picture by Nitesh Kumar

3 . The pristine pine forest section from Dawar to Dison

The trek dives right into the forest section. Throughout Day 2, you trek in the secluded pine forests of Gurez. It’s the one to treasure because forest sections on Kashmir treks are so rare.

What makes this section even more special is, it is not just a plain walk in the forest section. It’s an ascent. When I say it’s an ascent, you start from the foot of the pine trees and within a few minutes, you are at the tip of them!

gurez valley tour itinerary

4 . The panoramic views of the surroundings

After you come out of a treeline on Day 2, you start seeing the rich green meadows of Gurez. Compared to other parts of Kashmir, the meadows here are so different. It’s impossible to express it in words, you’ve to be there to experience it!

On each day, you reach beautiful heights that offer panoramic views of the surroundings. You see the stack of lush green and barren mountains in the same setting. This colour contrast is so pleasing to the eyes.

5 . Patalwansar Lakes

On Gurez Valley trek, you trek to two pristine alpine lakes - Patalwansar I and Patalwansar II. Though the names are similar, these two lakes are like non-identical twins. They are radically different from each other. The settings of these lakes get imprinted on your mind and stay with you long after your trek is over. Such is the charm of these lakes.

Cherry on the top is that you get to camp right beside Patalwansar I. This is a luxury that you rarely get on other treks.

Gurez Valley – The MOST Comprehensive Travel Guide

gurez valley

Gurez Valley is one of the least explored regions of Kashmir and the one that can truly be called an offbeat destination. It is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves. The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

Usually, when you talk about visiting Kashmir, it is mostly 4 places that come to mind – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Even Srinagar just acts as a base to explore the other three places.

But Kashmir is so much more. There are so many other places here that will leave you mesmerized if visited. Gurez is one such destination that I will highly recommend that you find a place for in your travel plans.

To get the best hotel rates, and taxi charges, and to organize your trip to Kashmir, you can speak with Kunal @ 9910 402 252. Give him my reference and you will surely get a discounted rate.

How you can plan your trip to Gurez Valley is what I will discuss in the post below. For all other details on Kashmir like mobile connectivity, public transport, taxi services, and several other tips, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Kashmir – A Complete Travel Guide . About Gurez Valley

Gurez, also spelled Gurais, is a valley located at a distance of about 123 kilometers from Srinagar in Kashmir. Due to its proximity to the border, tourist movement in the region was not allowed until a few years ago.

But now, Indian nationals can travel to Gurez Valley as long as they are carrying valid government-issued identity proof (Aadhar card). Foreign nationals are not allowed to enter Gurez Valley as of now.

At an average altitude of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters), the valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It has diverse fauna and wildlife including the Himalayan brown bear and the snow leopard.

The Kishanganga River flows through the valley before merging into the Jhelum River near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan. Razdan Pass is the only high-altitude pass between Srinagar and Gurez. Due to heavy snowfall in winter, the road remains blocked for about six months a year.

The valley is divided into two districts, Dawar and Tilel. Dawar is also the central township in Gurez and this is where all the hotels are located.

How to reach Gurez Valley?

Gurez Valley can be reached by road between April to October. From November to March, when the road gets blocked, the only way to get in and out is by helicopter service from either Srinagar or Bandipora.

For both these choices, you will first have to reach Srinagar. If you were traveling by your own vehicle, then you can drive to Srinagar by either the regular Jammu–Srinagar highway or by the Mughal road.

Of the two, the Jammu-Srinagar highway is the better maintained and most used road but is also the more crowded one. The Mughal road is the more scenic of the two and there is hardly any traffic on this.

For more details on how you can reach Srinagar via Mughal Road, please read How to Plan a Journey on Mughal Road . Once you arrive at Srinagar, you can then make a road trip to Gurez Valley which will at least be a 2-day journey.

Srinagar is also well connected to the rest of the country by Air, Train, and Bus service. If you reach by Air or Bus, you can either hire a taxi or rent a bike in Srinagar to visit  Gurez. You can also travel by public transport.

More details on all these options are further provided in the article.

Gurez Valley by Road

If you were traveling by your self-owned vehicle or a Srinagar-rented bike, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.

Srinagar – Bandipore – Razdan Pass – Kazalwan – Dawar (Gurez)

This entire journey is about 140 kilometers in total depending on where you start from in Srinagar. Total time will be 6-8 hours depending on your speed so ensure that you start by 10 AM latest.

From Srinagar to Bandipore, it is pretty much a flat road and in about average condition. Do not forget to tank because, after Bandipore, there may not be any fuel station till Dawar.

A little after Srinagar, the first lake you will cross will be Mansabal Lake. It is actually quite scenic and definitely worth taking a break for sightseeing.

The second lake you will come across will be the Wular Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. You will then climb up Razdan Pass and somewhere along, the road will start to deteriorate a little bit.

Near Razdan Pass, you will register yourself at the Army check post. This is where you enter the Gurez Valley and will be needed to make your entries at a couple of more checkpoints.  Do not forget to bring your Aadhar Card along because, without it, the Army will not let you pass.

The condition of the road will be a mix of good, bad, and average on the entire route.

razdan pass gurez valley

Srinagar to Gurez Valley Taxi

Taxis are available in two forms. You can either rent a private taxi or you can also travel by a private taxi. The best, easiest, and most convenient way would be to rent a private taxi for the trip.

A trip to Gurez Valley can be planned for either 2 days or 3 days. That is an ideal time that I will recommend. If you plan for 2 days, the total taxi charge will be around Rs. 10000. If you plan a trip for 3 days, it will be Rs. 14000.

If you also want to go sightseeing in the Tilel district and all the way to Chakwali, Rs. 7000 will be the additional charge for this. More details on Tilel and Chakwali are mentioned further in the article.

For booking a taxi in Srinagar, talk to Kunal @ 9910 402 252. He is a great guy and will be able to get you a cab for the lowest possible price.

Srinagar to Gurez Shared Taxi

These are available in plenty from both Srinagar and Bandipore. Chances of getting a shared cab from Srinagar all the way to Dawar are however very low. You will have to break your journey into two parts.

From Parimpora in Srinagar, you will first have to board a shared cab to Bandipora. It will cost you about Rs. 150 per person. From Bandipora, you will then board another shared cab for Dawar which will cost you about Rs. 350 per person.

Also Read: How to Plan a Gulmarg Gondola Ride?

Srinagar to Gurez Valley Bus

A journey by Bus will be the same that I mentioned above for the shared cabs. From Parimpora in Srinagar, you will board a bus to drop you in Bandipora. The fare will be Rs. 100 to Rs. 150 per person.

There is however no bus from Bandipora to Gurez Valley. You will have to board a shared cab only which is mostly a Sumo. The fare, as I mentioned above, will be Rs. 350 per person for this part of the journey.

The people of the Gurez Valley have proposed to the authorities to operate a daily bus from Srinagar to Dawar in Gurez. This will definitely help boost tourism in the valley and make the lives of the locals easier. But there is no confirmation yet on when or if this bus will start.

For now, you will have to travel by bus to Bandipora and then to Dawar by shared cab.

gurez valley

Gurez Valley by Helicopter

A trip to Gurez Valley by Helicopter will definitely be the shortest one. This service is operated by the Department of tourism in Kashmir and was introduced in 2017 for locals and tourists to promote Gurez’s tourism potential.

It is however only available from November to March when the road to Gurez Valley is blocked by snow.

You can board a Helicopter for Gurez from both Srinagar and Bandipore. The fare per person is Rs. Rs 3,000 from Srinagar airport and Rs 2,000 from Bandipora.

Srinagar to Gurez Helicopter Booking

The tickets for Srinagar to Gurez Valley helicopter can be booked from either the Airport itself or from the TRC office, Rajbagh, Srinagar. At TRC, you will need to go to H block and the 2nd floor.

The service is available only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, both ways. The entire chopper ride from Srinagar to Gurez is about 35 minutes.

In Bandipora, you will first have to visit the DC office and book a ticket. The fare per person is Rs. 2000 approximately. You will then go to the NHPC Helipad and board the Helicopter from there.

Srinagar railway station is the nearest railway line to Gurez. The problem however is that it is not yet fully operational and connected.

At the time of writing this article, it will take at least another 18 months to 2 years for full connectivity. Right now, you can reach Udhampur by train. From Udhampur, you will then have to board a bus or taxi for Ramban.

After reaching Ramban, you will then board another train from Ramban to Srinagar. An easier way thus would be to just board a bus or shared taxi directly from Udhampur to Srinagar.

Gurez Valley Permits

You do not need a permit to visit Gurez Valley if you are an Indian citizen. However, you will need to register yourself at several Army check posts between Srinagar and Dawar. You will be required to produce your Aadhar Card at all of them. If you were not carrying your Aadhar Car, make sure you have a soft copy of it on your phone.

Foreign nationals were earlier allowed to travel to Gurez after getting a permit from the District Commissioner’s office in either Srinagar or  Bandipora. This is no longer in practice though since last year. As of now, only Indians can enter Gurez Valley and foreign nationals will not be allowed any further than Bandipora.

How to reach Gurez Valley in Winter

The road to Gurez Valley gets blocked in winter after Razdan Pass is completely snowed out. A helicopter is the only way to reach here from November to March.

The entire Valley in these months gets buried deep under snow. I was talking to a villager here and he told me that sometimes, it can snow as much as 15 feet.

Also Read: How to Plan a Journey to Aharbal Waterfall?

Some of the locals also move to other parts of Kashmir like Srinagar looking for work in winter. They then return in summer for farming.

If you were planning to visit in winter, then my best advice would be that you call a hotel here and confirm your booking if you want to stay. Otherwise, you can just make it a one-day trip – arrive in Gurez by Helicopter, spend some time, and go back the same day.

gurez valley in winter

Where to Stay in Gurez Valley

Dawar is the only place where accommodation is available in the form of a hotel or a campsite. There is no other place to stay anywhere else in Gurez for now.

Tourism in the valley has been on the rise for the last few years. I am sure if it stays that way, more hotels and accommodation choices will come up in other areas of the valley as well. But for now, it is only Dawar where you can opt to stay overnight.

Hotels in Gurez Valley

Earlier, there was just a J&K tourism Dak Bungalow or rest house that used to serve as the only option for staying in Dawar. But now, several hotels have come up, thanks to the increase in the tourism in Valley.

The oldest and the most popular one is the Kaka Palace Guest House. You can contact either Younis at 9419600027 or Ejaz at 9682101577. They are the owners of the hotels and will ensure that your stay with them is a comfortable one.

You can read my detailed review of the hotel here at Hotel Review – Kaka Palace Guest House, Gurez .

Other than this, there are several other hotels that have come up in the last couple of years and more are being constructed. I would recommend staying at Kaka Palace because of its service and location.

Speak with either Younis or Younis. Even if they are booked and cannot accommodate you, they will definitely arrange for you to stay in some other hotel.

Camping in Gurez Valley

There is a campsite near the Kishenganga River on the outskirts of Dawar. I have not stayed here myself but it is at a great location and can be a fun place to stay.

As far as I know, there are no homestay options available as well. I am sure there will be more in the near future but for now, you will have to stay at either a hotel or the campsite.

What to See in Gurez Valley

Let us now take a look at your options for sightseeing in Gurez Valley.

The natural beauty of the place will be at the top of the list. The landscape of Gurez is actually a little different than what you see in the rest of Kashmir. The vast lush landscape surrounded by snow-capped peaks will definitely leave its effect on you.

With that being said, there are a few places that can be called prime attractions of a trip to Gurez. I have actually covered the topic in detail in a different post, Places to Visit in Gurez Valley & Things to Do .

For a quick overview though, below is the list of tourist places in Gurez Valley.

Habba Khatoon Peak & Waterfall

It is a mountain peak overlooking the town of Dawar and has quite a bit of history related to it. It turns golden at the time of sunset and presents good a photographic opportunity. For more details on this peak, take a look at The Life and Legend of Habba Khatoon .

habba khatoon peak in gurez valley

That is just a name that I have given this place because I do not what else to call it. I said Marsh because it is a swamp-like area on the other side of Dawar.

It was created as a result of the flooding caused by the Kishengang River dam. It is another good spot to see the sunset and for a view of the entire Dawar town. The campsite that I spoke about above is on this way to this marsh-like area.

vargis khan

Khandiyal Top

It is a viewpoint on the top of a hillock that presents a 360-degree view of Dawar, the valley, nearby villages, snow-capped peaks, and Kishenganga Dam lake.

Chakwali Gurez

It is the last village on the Indian side of the border, located in the Tilel district of Gurez. You will need to stay in Dawar for a day to drive to this village. The route after Dawar will be as mentioned below.

Dawar – Barnoi – Purana Tilel – Sheikhpora – Dukar – Badugam – Hasangam – Badoab – Gujran – Chakwali

This entire stretch till Chakwali is about 65 kilometers. So it will be a journey of 120 kilometers in total from Dawar to Chakwali and back. But it will take you the entire day due to extremely bad roads.

The entire stretch is a non-stop series of potholes, one after another. This is where I actually broke my motorcycle’s suspension.

vargis khan

Chorwan Gurez

It is a small but beautiful village near Dawar. Tourists are not allowed to the village yet because it is very close to the border. But take a drive towards the village and you will see some great views on the way.

I was told by the locals in Dawar that Chorwarn is being developed for border tourism. But that will definitely take some time if it ever actually happens.

Gurez Festival

The Gurez Festival is held in the valley each year for 3 days. It showcases folk songs and dances by the locals and performances by local children. Adventure events like mountain biking in Dawar and Tulail Valley, white water rafting in the Kishanganga River, and mountaineering events are also organized.

This festival is supposed to happen each year but it really doesn’t. Sometimes, it can be a gap of 2-3 years before the event is organized.

Some of the other places to visit in Gurez are mentioned below.

  • Razdan Pass
  • Kishen Ganga River
  • Gurez Dam (A huge dam built on the Kishen Ganga river and a great view)

Please take a look at Places to Visit in Gurez Valley & Things to Do for more information on sightseeing in Gurez Valley. Adding all this information here again will just render this one page way too long.

Things to Do in Gurez Valley

Other than visiting all the places I listed above, a few other tourist activities that you can enjoy are as mentioned below.

  • Fishing in the Kishanganga River
  • Photography

People here are very friendly and warm so do indulge yourself in talking to them and learning about their lives and culture.

There are soldiers here at every corner and they too are fun to be talking to. Trust me, they can tell you some great stories if you have the time.

Gurez Valley Weather

Due to its high altitude, the weather of Gurez remains cold and pleasant throughout the year. In January and February, the place remains buried under snow and is impossible to reach by road.

Snow starts to melt in March and is gone by the end of the month from the lower areas. The high altitude pass of Razdan Pass however remains covered under snow till April.

Spring arrives in late April and the next three months till June are considered among the best times to visit Gurez Valley. The road opens sometime in the month of April so from January to March, you can reach Gurez only by Helicopter.

The monsoon arrives in the month of July and lasts throughout August. This is when the entire valley turns lush and the scenery turns heavenly. It is a good time for a photography visit.

September is another good month to visit Gurez. The monsoon would be gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind. Autumn arrives in the month of October and all the green turns into Orange and the valleys of Gurez convert into a magical golden.

It can snow anytime at Razdan Pass after September, blocking the road temporarily. The snowfall increases at the pass in October and the road is declared closed for civilian traffic.

By December, the snowfall would have reached lower areas of Dawar and nearby villages as well.

For a detailed description of weather conditions in Gurez Valley, please read A Month by Month Breakdown of Weather of Gurez .

Best Time to visit Gurez Valley

Now based on the information above, the best time to visit the valley would be in April or September. However, if you want to visit here to see several feet of snow covering everything around, then the months of February or March will be the best.

May and June are equally good months but it can get surprisingly hot here in the summer months. The sun will be very harsh and will make it difficult to go sightseeing.

You can visit in July and August as well but due to the monsoon season, you will have to inquire ahead about the weather and the road conditions.

April and September are when the weather in the valley is perfectly enjoyable and the scenery will also be amazing. For more details on this topic, please take a look at When is the Best Time to Visit Gurez?

Gurez Valley Itinerary

3 Days at least is what I will recommend for a trip to Gurez. Any more than that will just give you time to explore the valley and villages further.

  • On Day 1, start at around 9 AM from Srinagar and you will reach Dawar by 4 PM where you will stay for the night.
  • On Day 2, travel all the way to Chakwali and return to Dawar by evening.
  • Spend your morning taking a stroll in the alley and travel back to Srinagar by evening.

kishenganga river dam

Mentioned below are some other tips that can be of help in visiting Gurez Valley.

Mobile and Data Connectivity in Gurez

MTNL / BSNL has the widest coverage in this area. Jio has the strongest network in and around Dawar and provides 4G data speed.

All postpaid phones will work till Bandipore. But once you cross over Razdan Pass, only a postpaid BSNL or Jio phone will continue to work. Apart from BSNL and Jio, no other network works in Gurez Valley.

If you were planning to go to Chakwali, then Jio will also stop working shortly after Dawar.

The important thing that you need to remember however is that only postpaid connections work in the state of J&K. So if you were actually carrying a prepaid MTNL, BSNL, or Jio phone then it will be dead the moment you entered Kashmir.

Electricity in Gurez Valley

There is electricity in Dawar but for a limited duration only. They actually do not have it coming from outside of the valley. Instead, there is a huge generator installed in the village itself.

They turn this generator on at sunset and then it works till about 10 or 11 PM. At 10, they will turn the generator off after everyone has eaten and retired to bed.

Then in the morning, just before the Azaan for morning prayers, the generator will be turned on and electricity will remain available till about 7 AM. After that, it will remain unavailable till sunset.

Almost all hotels here now have their own generators and will switch those on when needed.

Banks / ATM

There is a branch of J&K Bank as well as an ATM in Dawar.

Petrol Pump / Mechanic

There is in fact a functional petrol pump here at Gurez. It remains open till 7 PM and then opens at 9 AM again in the morning.

We got a tank-full done here at this petrol pump. Right next to the fuel station is a mechanic who can help you with minor fixes or flat tires.

Medical Facilities

Yes, there is in fact a hospital available here too. But keep in mind though that the medical assistance will be basic. If it was anything serious, then the patient would have to be brought back to Srinagar.

The army base is all around here so in case of any critical situation, you can seek medical help from the Indian Army as well.

Shopping in Gurez

There are plenty of shops here in Gurez. As a matter of fact, there is also a high school, a degree college, and a girls’ college in Dawar along with several other government offices. Yes, that is how big the town actually is.

But there is no shopping choice as such. The shops here are just selling day-to-day groceries and items. Your shopping would have to happen in Srinagar only, not Gurez.

Road Conditions

From Srinagar to Bandipore, the road is mostly all good. It will then get a little bad as you start climbing Razdan Pass. The road will then be good again towards the top of the pass and will remain so for a few kilometers on the descent as well.

There are some bad stretches between Razdan Pass and Dawar but mostly, it is an average road.

Between Dawar and Chakwali, the road is good for the first 10 kilometers. After that, it is a complete nightmare.

gurez valley

Below are some frequently asked questions about Gurez Valley.

Where is Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is at a distance of about 86 kilometers from Bandipora and 123 kilometers from Srinagar in northern Kashmir.

Why Visit Gurez Valley?

Is Gurez Valley worth it? There are multiple other places in Kashmir that are equally beautiful and easily approachable so why not go there?

If you are someone who likes to visit places like Manali and Shimla, want to eat at fancy restaurants, visit crowded markets, and spend time shopping, then Gurez is not the place for you.

If you however intend to visit an offbeat and hardly-crowded destination, Gurez is the place you should visit. It is what you may even call virgin natural beauty that has not yet been spoiled by the tourist craze and crowd.

Another great reason to visit Gurez could be to witness the life that our soldiers out here spend. The place is dangerously close to the border and the risk is ever-present. There are soldiers all around who will be surprised to see a tourist in the area and would love to share their stories.

Is Gurez Valley Safe to Visit?

For tourists and common people, Gurez Valley is quite safe as long as you stay on the road and do not go to places you are not supposed to.

Before you plan your journey though, do keep an eye out for any word of unrest in the Kashmir Valley. If there is news of violence or protests, it is best to postpone your trip for another time.

Where is Gurez Valley in Kashmir?

Gurez Valley is located in the Bandipora district of Kashmir.

How far is Gurez from Srinagar?

Gurez is at a distance of 130 kilometers approximately from Srinagar, depending on where you were starting from in Srinagar. If you want to go all the way to Chakwali, then the total distance is about 200 kilometers.

How to reach Gurez Valley by Flight?

Srinagar Airport is the nearest airport to Gurez. The major airlines operating regular flights to Srinagar are Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet, Air Asia, and Indigo.

From Srinagar, you can board a helicopter ride to Dawar but it is only available from November to March. For the rest of the year, you will have to travel from Srinagar to Gurez Valley by road.

What Clothes should I pack for Gurez Valley?

You do not really need to pack anything specific just for Gurez. Whatever you packed for your Kashmir trip will suffice for Gurez as well.

Between April and September, your regular cotton clothes accompanied by some light woolens or a light jacket will do. Actually, after walking around for a while, that one jacket too will start to feel warm and you will end up removing it.

If a winter trip is on your mind then you must bring in your woolen clothes, a heavy and warm windproof jacket, and some good quality gloves and socks.

Ensure that your jacket has a hood to protect your head and neck from the cold. If there is no hood then pack a cap and muffler.

Is Gurez Valley Open for Tourists?

Yes, Gurez Valley remains open for tourists in all 12 months of the year.

Is Gurez Valley in India?

Gurez Valley is divided into three regions. Two of those regions, Neelum District and Astore are in Pakistan. The third region, Gurez Tehsil, is part of the Indian-administered Bandipore district.

Can I go to Gulmarg from Gurez Valley?

There is no direct route between Gulmarg and Gurez Valley. From both places, you will first have to reach Srinagar and then move on to the next one.

Can I go to Pahalgam from Gurez Valley?

No, you cannot go to Pahalgam directly from Gurez Valley. Both of these places are in the exact opposite directions from Srinagar.

Can I go to Sonamarg from Gurez Valley?

No, you cannot go to Sonamarg directly from Gurez. You will have to travel back to Srinagar first.

What is Famous in Gurez?

The natural beauty of the place and the peak of Habba Khatoom are the two most famous attractions of Gurez Valley.

Which River Flows through Gurez?

Kishanganga River flows through the Gurez Valley. It originates in the north of, flows through the Gurez Valley, and then merges with the Jhelum River near the city of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan. It is known as the Neelum River in Pakistan.

How Many Villages are there in Gurez Valley?

The official count of the villages is 29 but it is hard to say really. Villages here are just a group of 10 to 15 houses and there are a lot of them.

How do I get to Gurez Valley?

You can reach Gurez Valley from Srinagar by road or helicopter. The best way to reach Gurez Valley is by private taxi but you can also board a bus or shared cab from Parimpora and Bandipora.

Can Foreigners go to Gurez?

No, foreigners are currently not allowed to travel to Gurez Valley.

Hi Vargis Thanks for your excellent insights on Gurez. Planning to visit Gurez on 8-10 October 2024. Will it be okay? Need another clarification. Our plan is to go to Gurez from Lolab and proceed to Sonamarg from Gurez. However from you blog it is surprising to note that we have to go down to Srinagar again to proceed to Gurez, though Google is saying something different. Will you clear the position ? Depending upon your advise, we will plan accordingly. Thanks again Vargis. Regards Subhadip

Is Srinagar to Gurez valley road is open for public at the end of this month? We are planning to visit the place.

Hard to say. Razdan Pass is closed right now due to snow, most probably will only open in April

Hello Vargis, Thank you for such an informative blog. I often refer to your blogs while travelling to offbeat destinations. I am a solo traveller myself and use public transport mostly to explore the unexplored places. I have a question for Gurez Valley. If I take bus and shared cabs to reach Dawar, how do I travel to Chakwali or other villages in Gurez? Are taxis available for a day at Dawar?

Thank you Bhai. You will have to take a private taxi. There is no regular public transport within Gurez.

Plenty of construction going on everywhere at the moment, so be prepared to bear the noise and resulting pollution and inconvenience if you choose to go to Gurez now. Or else carefully enquire and find a place that’s spared of intensive construction work now.

Thank you Paddy !!!

I am 30 yr old solo traveler. I am planning to cover Gurez + 1 other destination over 7 days on my first-ever trip to Kashmir. Can you suggest if I should take a bike from Srinagar or use shared taxis? Also, any suggestions for the second destination? I completely want to avoid commercialized areas.

Hi Apoorv – Renting bike will be a good choice. The other destination can be Bangus Valley

It is like a “one stop shop” for all information needs! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge so generously.

We are planning a trip in Sept last week. Apart from the usual Srinagar- Gulmarg-Sonmarg-Pahalgam itinerary, I want to do one “off-beat” destination – Gurez or Bungus. Someone mentioned in another forum that Sept last week may not be a great time for Gurez. Can you let me know if I should keep Gurez in my itinerary in Sept end?

Hi Madhumita – No, September last week is a great time to visit Gurez. You will enjoy the scenery

I was posted in Kashmir thus also visited Gurez. An untouched region of the original Aryan civilization. The Gurez people are the purest Aryans and cousins of genuine Kashmiris. Shina, Kashmiri and Kalash languages are very similar. In fact the Dardic people of Gurez if they continue to marry among themselves, like the Kashmiris and us Jats will not only retain their pure ethnicity but also their great culture. Also be careful of foreign infiltration in this region. While forensic genetics is very accurate racial genetics is technically full of flaws, thus easy for a crooked scientist to fix results. Note the Jewish lobby is very close to China and Chinese and trying hard by fraud to place data that Aryans are mixed with Mongols. This is the howler of the century. Also note the genuine Mongols are the Mongol people of Mongolia while Chinese are of inferior Mongol stock. Gurez people and Kashhmiri people have no Mongol blood, however, few people in Gilgit (POK) have mixed with the Mongols. Thus retain you pure Aryan genetics. Note the Jewish lobby by sophisticated-fraud is even trying to make Aryan people as Yehudis. I loved Gurez and its people. Also the Kashmiri people.

Does Bangladeshi people get permission to visit Gurez valley? I saw International tourists need to get permission from DC office. Leh doesn’t allow Bangladeshi tourists, that’s why I’m asking. If yes, than what is the procedure of getting the permission?

I mean do we have to do it through an agent like spiti or we can just go to DC office with our documents? And do we need to pay any fee for the permit?

Hi Vargis, thank you so much for this detailed article! I just happened to come across the name Gurez Valley recently while looking for places to travel within India for an upcoming trip, and the more I read about it, the more excited I am to one day soon visit this beautiful place. Your article was just what I was looking for!

Can you please help me with one question – I am a foreigner with Overseas Citizen of India visa – I also do not have an aadhar card. I see in your article that it’s necessary to get approval from the District Commissioner’s office – do you know if that permission is normally given same day? I will only be in India for a few days, and I know these things can sometimes take time. I’m just wondering if I can show up to the DC office in the morning and leave with permission that day or if there is any way to apply for permission online/in advance? Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Hi Pinki – It can be procured the same day but there is no saying how long it will take. You may have to wait a couple or a few hours at the office. There is no online procedure to get the permit, can only be done in person.

' src=

Your posts are very informative and detailed. I am glad that I happened to come across your page. I have a question on helicopter service to Gurez. Will it be operational in early May ? If yes , then will a day trip be possible by helicopter? Other option that we have is to go to Daksun-Sinthan Top by road for a day trip. What will be your recommendation ? Thanks !!

Thanks, Jas. Helicopter Service is always a little dicey. It may or may not be available, especially after the road is opened in May because then no one has the need to use it.

Hi Vargis, I am visiting Gurez around the 22nd to 24th of July. I’ll be probably travelling by a small car, an Alto. Do you think that the small car will be able to manage the Razdan pass and ahead?

Hi Hemal – I would highly advise against an Alto in Gurez. Road are way too bad. So bad even that the rear suspension of one of the Enfields broke coz there were two people on it with luggage. With that being said, I did not notice two guys from Punjab who came to Gurez in their old Santro.

Walter Lawrence, an author and once the British Settlement Commissioner of Kashmir, who visited Gurez in 1894, had called the valley “the most beautiful of Kashmir’s Margs… with mountain scraps of indescribable grandeur”.

127 Kms from Srinagar, the valley of Gurez lies in a peaceful, remote corner in the north of Kashmir. Dotted with quaint villages along the scenic Kishanganga river, this offbeat destination is an unexplored slice of heaven. It is geographically isolated from the rest of the world and is surrounded by exceptional natural beauty.

From high mountain ranges to unspoiled forests to innumerable Pristine lakes ( Patalwan Lakes Trek or the Gurez Valley Trek ), this is an unmapped paradise. It is also the homeland and last sanctuary for the Dardic people in India.

Historically, Gurez was part of ancient Dardistan. It fell along the old Silk Route, which connected the Kashmir Valley with Gilgit-Baltistan before continuing further to the Kashgar region of China.

The local inhabitants are from the ethnic Dard-Shin tribe. Different from Kashmiri, they speak in Shina, a once-thriving language that is slowly vanishing.

They have their ancestral connection with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan region, now in Pakistan. Their styles of dress, traditions, customs and cultural identity is similar to their kinsmen located on the other side of LoC.

Today, the last major remnants of this unique ethnic group can be found only in Gurez, Tulail and Bagtore areas, coexisting happily and peacefully with the Indian Army stationed here.

This is one rare nook of Kashmir where the Indian Army is on very good terms with the local population, always providing much-needed assistance with medical and other emergencies, especially in the harsh winter months.

On this curated Gurez Valley Tour, we explore a secluded paradise nestled away in one of the most unexplored regions of the Kashmir valley.

The trip helps us unravel the Dardic people’s history, culture and heritage, offering us all a fascinating glimpse into the lives of an ancient mountain tribe.

2. The formidable Habba Khatoon Peak

The mountain of Habba Khatoon is the star of Gurez, standing tall and welcoming all the visitors here. It is a graceful, pyramid-shaped peak that rises high over the village of Dawar, overlooking its vast green expanse.

A visual of the lazily flowing Kishanganga against the backdrop of this towering giant is one of the most spectacular and memorable sights here.

The rocky mountain looks amazingly beautiful in the evening when the sun shines on its bare face from the opposite side. In the morning, the rising sun behind it makes the mountain even more grand, bringing a mystical touch to this awe-inspiring attraction.

Apart from its natural grandeur, the mountain is also significant particularly because of its name. Habba Khatoon in Gurez valley is named after the 16th century Kashmiri poetess and the legendary peasant-queen.

One of the greatest poets of Kashmir, she once composed poems and songs about loss and separation after the death of her husband and is now fondly remembered as the ‘Nightingale of Kashmir’.

An iconic figure in Kashmiri literary and medieval history, Habba Khatoon’s ballads are sung in the valley even today. The mountain gem of Gurez stands tall as a grand symbol of the poet’s greatness.

3. Hamlets of the Tulail Valley

Mountains of Tulail Valley Gurez

Tulail Valley is one of the remotest regions of Jammu and Kashmir located up north of the territory, beyond the Gurez valley. Parallel to the Line of Control, as we travel further up the Dawar township, we enter the Tulail area crossing multiple Army checkpoints.

This is a highly restricted area requiring special permissions due to its close proximity to the Border line.

Driving along the Kishanganga river, here we discover an extraordinary land plucked straight out of a folktale. The captivating natural beauty of this unspoilt region is a unique blend between the stark barrenness of Ladakh and lush greenery of Kashmir. The sweet mix of both terrains conjures up exceptional sceneries at every turn.

Many beautiful villages exist on this sixty-km long route, with Chakwali being the last settlement. Sheikhpora, Badugam, Purana Tilail and Angaikot are some of the many picturesque hamlets on the way that constantly demand our undivided attention.

With rolling pastures, dreamy landscapes and towering mountains for company, the ethnic Dards-Shins have called these villages home for centuries. Traditional wooden houses and interlocking log structures, built without nails in an antiquated style can still be found in some of these old villages.

Isolated far from the onslaught of modernization, the locals here have somewhat managed to retain their unique traditions, lifestyle and cultural identities.

A restricted motorable route connects the Tulail valley with Kargil’s Drass and Mushkoh Valley via (Kabul/Kaobal) Gali pass. The region is also connected to Kashmir’s Sonamarg by remote and forbidden mountain trails.

4. Crossing the Razdan Pass: A road Less Travelled

From the plains of Bandipora , an uphill journey passing through winding roads, coniferous forests and emerald meadows takes us to the breathtaking Razdan pass, the gateway to the heavenly Gurez. Located at an elevation of 11672 feet, it is the highest point that we reach on our Gurez Valley Tour.

The pass connects dozens of remote and far-flung areas, including those near the Line of Control with district headquarters Bandipora in North Kashmir.

Once an integral part of the Silk route between Kashmir and Central Asia, the offbeat road to Razdan Pass remains a strategically important link connecting the Gurez with the Kashmiri mainland .

One of the major highlights of this experiential trip is the exhilarating drive through the pass that overlooks deep gorges and cliffs. The high-altitude passage offers some impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys. On clear days, the majestic Mount Harmukh is also visible from here.

The highest peak in the vicinity, Mount Harmukh is considered sacred by the Hindus. It is also the famous mountain from which the world’s second-highest mountain peak, K2, was first discovered in 1856.

The entire pass area receives heavy snowfall during the winter months cutting off the access to Gurez during that time.

Four Kms short of the pass, there exists a shrine dedicated to Peer baba, a revered local saint who had come from Pakistan in 1933. He breathed his last near the pass where his shrine stands today. It is maintained by the Indian army and offers another extremely scenic pitstop on the way.

The road connecting Srinagar to Gurez is now a well-kept highway but includes some sections which are not in the best shape, especially the road down from the pass. Overall, the roads are in decent condition and the journey is more comfortable in Innovas than in Sumos or Boleros. It is important to note that the road remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall at the pass.

Despite being extremely close to the Line of Control, North Kashmir’s Gurez Valley is one of the most peaceful corners of Kashmir. The area is absolutely safe and secure for tourists. Starting from the road journey from Srinagar to exploring deep inside the valley, all areas are heavily guarded by the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. Due to its proximity to the LoC, the region was off-limits for travellers and tourists for many years due to imposition of restrictions by the government. Now that the region has fully opened up, more and more travellers are visiting to experience this hitherto hidden paradise.

Dawar is the central township of Gurez Valley and has the presence of a huge Army brigade in the town. There are multiple army camps and posts all around the region and some of the inner areas require proper permissions from the Army authorities. Depending on the day’s orders, they may prohibit visiting certain areas while other main areas will be free to go. The Army stationed here is on very good terms with the local population, employing them in various works plus providing much-needed assistance with medical and other emergencies, especially in the harsh winter months. The locals are hospitable and friendly and very welcoming to all visitors. This new wave of tourism not only has boosted the local economy, providing a good source of employment to local guides, tour operators, porters and other service providers but has also offered discerning travellers, cultural explorers and offbeat storytellers an awesome chance to experience this unexplored wonderland.

Overall, therefore Gurez valley is perfectly safe for all visitors. Having said this, like any other remote region in the Himalayas, it’s always advisable to follow any local travel advisories issued by the government, maintain basic safety precautions, and carry Govt. ID cards everywhere. When travelling to any new place anywhere in the country, it’s essential to stay updated on the local security situation before planning your visit. While Gurez is generally accessible by road between the months of May to November, the best time to visit Gurez Valley on a leisure tour is May-June and September-October. July and August are usually quite rainy months but this is when the valley is also at its greenest, filled with lush landscapes all around. During these periods, the weather is generally pleasant and temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C which may change due to local weather events and conditions. The nights can get cooler and it definitely feels colder when it rains. It’s advisable to pack some good warm clothing, particularly for the evenings and the higher altitudes.

For trekkers and adventure enthusiasts who opt for the Gurez Valley Trek or the Patalwan Lakes Trek, the weather conditions can be more extreme. The best time to do the Gurez Valley Trek is between the months of June to August. It has a short trekking window and June is usually the ideal time for a less rainy trek. The daytime temperatures on the trek range from 10-15 degrees Celsius while at nighttime, the mercury levels may drop to sub-zero temperatures.

Gurez Valley is not accessible for visitors throughout the year due to heavy snowfall on the Razdan Pass and harsh weather conditions during the winter months. The region is usually open for visitors from May to October when the roads are clear and weather conditions are favourable. The road clearances depend on the snowfall and the timings vary from year to year.

Due to its remoteness, the lesser-known region of Gurez does not have many accommodation options to choose from. Unlike how you would find in a typical commercialised tourist destination, there are only a few good accommodation options available in Gurez Valley that include local guesthouses, small hotels, and local homestays that cater to visitors. There is also a guest house run by the Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism department(JKTDC) that has been maintained decently. There are no luxury stays, star hotels or resorts yet in Gurez Valley. In most of the here, the services and amenities provided are basic but comfortable. We would always recommend choosing your stay hosted by the locals. This not only supports locals in their tourism endeavour but also makes your experience more authentic and memorable. It’s also always advisable to make reservations in advance, especially during the summer season to ensure availability.

In Gurez, Mobile Networks and internet connectivity are available in the main towns and villages of the region. BSNL network has been present here since long albeit intermittently. Recently Jio has arrived ensuring much better connectivity in this isolated region. As of now, only the Jio and BSNL mobile networks are present in Gurez Valley and the internet also works decently. Depending on your accommodation, wifi may also be available. However, in some of the areas in the region, the signal coverage can be sporadic or almost non-existent. When venturing into some of the interior areas deeper into the valley, the mobile signals may be quite limited as these places still remain cutoff from any kind of network connectivity. Therefore it’s important to be prepared for the possibility of no phone network or internet connectivity in some of the places visited. While you may encounter limited or no phone network and internet in some places during your visit, the experience provides you an excellent opportunity to disconnect from technology and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

When visiting Jammu and Kashmir, it is important to note that prepaid mobile connections issued outside the territory are not functional due to security reasons. Only Postpaid connections and locally issued Prepaid sims will work. All postpaid connections of major network operators will have good reception and data connectivity in most destinations of the valley. Airtel, Jio, Vodafone and BSNL – all provide good connectivity and internet data networks in the main areas of the valley with BSNL having the widest coverage and Airtel having the strongest connectivity. Recently, Jio has penetrated well and is now offering great connectivity to even some very remote areas of the region. Srinagar city has good mobile connectivity for all major mobile network operators such as Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL providing coverage. Wi-Fi is also available in many hotels, cafes, and restaurants. However, please note connectivity in some of the remote and offbeat areas or during certain weather conditions may be intermittent or even non-existent.

Although there is electricity coverage in almost all parts of the valley, the supply can be irregular and limited. In Dawar town, for example, the electricity is supplied in a limited manner for a certain period of time in the day. Most accommodations in Gurez Valley nowadays have their own generator and electricity supply mechanisms. It is always recommended for such remote areas that you bring battery power banks in order to charge all your cameras, phones or other electronic items.

Therefore it is crucial to have a few buffer days if you plan to visit Gurez as a foreign national. Visitors with Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards are allowed with relatively lesser restrictions provided they inform the DC office on their travel plans. The valley is surrounded by snow-capped hills in June and dotted with lush green meadows. The tranquillity of the surroundings is enhanced by the Kishanganga River. Visitors can explore the old wooden dwellings, interact with the friendly locals and enjoy the unspoilt beauty of this undiscovered gem of North India while there aren't many other tourists around.

2. Gokarna, Karnataka

One of the more off the beaten track of India's many bizarre beach towns, Gokarna is known for its pristine and unspoilt beaches. A temple town with a laid-back vibe, Gokarna is a popular summer resort in Karnataka, India. The charming town is lined with palm and coconut trees, the sea and fine sand. It lies on the coast of Karwar. Add Gokarna, a unique location in Karnataka, to your list of top Indian summer destinations.

3. Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Araku is a small town in the Eastern Ghats, perched on three hills: Chitamogondi, Raktakonda and Galikonda. It has much to offer, including sprawling coffee plantations, protected forests, breathtaking waterfalls and a rich cultural heritage. The location boasts breathtaking mountains, lush vegetation and waterfalls.

4. Barot, Himachal Pradesh

The Barot Valley in Mandi district is a trekker's dream come true. Its remarkable natural beauty is a result of its location in the magnificent valleys. This charming valley community is the gateway to the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary on the other side of the Uhl. It is also rich in biodiversity. The black bear, ghoral and monal all live in the sanctuary.

5. Sinthan Top, Kashmir

Covering an area of 1250 square kilometres, it is considered one of the largest river islands in the world. It is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of the Vaishnavite school of Hinduism. Due to severe soil erosion and flooding, the river island is disappearing. Experts predict that the island will be completely submerged by 2030.
