The Britpop icons announced a run of comeback shows on Tuesday (August 27), dubbed Oasis Live ’25 . Set to take place next summer, the trek will see Liam and Noel Gallagher perform on stadium stages together for the first time in 16 years.
Following strong rumours and reports of the group’s long-awaited return, Liam teased that an Oasis announcement was imminent during his ‘Definitely Maybe’ headline set at Reading Festival 2024 last Sunday (August 25).
The same video was soon posted on the band’s official social media channels, and on the Gallagher brothers’ individual accounts. Then came the news everyone was waiting for: Oasis are back. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get hold of tickets and what to expect from the tour.
Where are Oasis playing?
Concerts are currently scheduled for Manchester’s Heaton Park, London’s Wembley Stadium, Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Dublin’s Croke Park, and Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium.
On August 29, extra dates were announced for Manchester, London and Edinburgh in response to “unprecedented demand”.

When are tickets on sale?
Tickets go on general sale at 9am BST/8am IST on Saturday August 31 – you’ll be able to buy yours here (UK), and here (Ireland).
How much will tickets cost?
Per Gigs And Tours , seated tickets will start at £65 and go up to £185 (face value) plus fees. Standing tickets are priced at £135 (face value) plus fees. The Manchester shows will only offer standing.
There are also Premium Standing and Premium Seat packages available across the tour, as well as various hospitality, fan and merchandise options.
Tickets for the Dublin dates are expected to start at €86.50, according to music promoters MCD. Check out the UK list below.

How many tickets can I buy?
Ticketmaster has outlined its strict rules for purchasing tickets – confirming that customers can only order four tickets per household and card.
“Please adhere to published ticket limits. Persons who exceed the ticket limit may have any or all of their orders and tickets cancelled without notice by Ticketmaster at its discretion,” a statement reads.
“This includes orders associated with the same name, e-mail address, billing address, credit card number or other information.”
When is the pre-sale?
On August 27, fans were given a window to sign up for a ballot to access a pre-sale . The registration period was later extended following some delays caused by an “unprecedented volume of entries” .
Those who were successful in the ballot have already been notified and have been sent a unique code to access the pre-sale between 7pm BST and 10pm BST on Friday August 30.
“Success in the ballot will not guarantee tickets,” a statement read. “Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.”
Those who registered for the pre-sale ballot needed to answer a series of questions in an effort to keep it “fair and fan-focused”.
Customers were required to disclose how many Oasis shows they’ve been to (according to the form, this did “not have any bearing on your ballot application”) and were asked: “ Who was the drummer in the initial Oasis line-up? ” (Your answer for this question must be correct to qualify for the ballot).
Will they be on re-sale?
Oasis have launched an official partnership with ticket resale platform Twickets for their Oasis Live ’25 gigs ( visit here to see what’s on offer). A re-sale option will be available via Ticketmaster as well.
“Ticket resale is permitted at no more than the price you paid (face value + booking fees),” a statement reads.
“Please only use the official resale partners www.twickets.live and Ticketmaster. Selling tickets through unauthorised resale platforms will breach these T&Cs and those tickets may be cancelled.”
Don't look back in anger if you miss out on tickets this weekend. We've got you covered. https://t.co/A7KXxQzjK1 — Twickets (@Twickets) August 29, 2024
Twickets founder Richard Davies told IQ Magazine that he expected a “huge demand” for the upcoming tour but, as the dates are a year away, some fans may be unable to attend once they come around.
“We often see tickets resold due to summer holidays being booked, or if groups of friends all try and get tickets, then some of those friends may want to sell and buy for dates their friends are attending,” Davies explained.
“Our platform offers a way for fans to sell their tickets to other genuine fans, and avoids people having to use sites that allow inflated prices, which the artists and events companies don’t benefit from.”
Will there be further world tour dates announced?
The current Oasis Live ’25 dates are billed as European-exclusive shows for 2025. However, three additional gigs have already been announced for Manchester, London and Edinburgh due to “unprecedented demand”. Many fans hope and believe that more UK and Ireland dates will be released.
The band have also stated that p lans are “underway” to announce more world tour dates outside of Europe for 2025.
It was previously reported that the reunited Oasis could play a record-breaking 10 nights at Wembley Stadium – which would surpass Taylor Swift ‘s recent eight-night run at the venue on her ‘Eras Tour’ . At the time of writing, the Gallaghers are scheduled to perform in the capital across five nights next year.
Will the band be playing Glastonbury or any festivals in 2025?
Unfortunately not. “Despite media speculation, Oasis will not be playing Glastonbury 2025 or any other festivals next year,” a statement from the band on August 28 read .
The update came in response to whispers of a possible return to Worthy Farm next summer. Oasis first headlined Glasto in 1995 – just one year after their debut appearance at the festival.
They returned to top the Pyramid Stage bill in 2004, but the performance received lacklustre reviews from fans and critics alike.
In a press conference from 2008, Noel commented on Oasis’ history at Glastonbury: “We said the last time we [did] Glastonbury, we’ve never really pulled it off at Glastonbury… I don’t think.”
Both Liam and Noel have since performed at Glastonbury as solo artists, with the former’s previous band Beady Eye also having featured on the line-up. Noel last appeared with the High Flying Birds in 2022 , and he attended this year’s edition of the festival .

Who will be in the line-up of Oasis’ band?
It is expected that co-founding Oasis member Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs will be hitting the road in 2025 . A source told The Sun : “Bonehead is confirmed. [Liam and Noel] both wanted him in the fold and he was one of the drivers of the reunion.
“[…] The Oasis family has really come back together. Bonehead is ecstatic.”
Bonehead, who is a regular fixture in Liam’s solo backing band, was asked last year whether he would be up for taking part in an Oasis reunion . “I’m ready, got me dancing shoes,” he responded.
Earlier reports claimed that “no other original Oasis member is expected to join the reunion” , and that “the members of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will step in”. Meanwhile, NME has rounded up all the players who could be drafted in for Oasis Live ’25 – including Paul ‘Guigsy’ McGuigan, Alan White, Gem Archer and Sharrock.
Who will be supporting Oasis on tour?
No opening acts have been announced yet, but fans have some theories ; Kasabian , Blossoms , Fontaines D.C. and The Lottery Winners are among the names being mentioned.
LCD Soundsystem have been touted as well, after they appeared on a fake tour poster. In June, Noel was spotted side-stage during James Murphy and co’s Glastonbury performance . Could Kneecap be in with a shout? NG saw the Irish rap trio’s set at Worthy Farm too , and said he “couldn’t believe how enjoyable it was”.
What will the band play in their setlist?
Fans have been revisiting the Oasis’ final 2009 setlist in anticipation of what they might play next year, but such details are still up in the air. In the meantime, check out NME ’s dream setlist for the forthcoming massive gigs here .

Dublin (Irish: Baile Átha Cliath, "Town of the Hurdled Ford") is the capital city of Ireland. Its vibrancy, nightlife and tourist attractions are world renowned and it's the most popular entry point for international visitors to Ireland. As a city, it is disproportionately large for the size of the country with a population of 1.9 million in the Greater Dublin Region (2011); nearly half of the Republic's population lives in this metropolitan area. The central sights can be navigated by foot, with a few outlying sights, and suburbs sprawling out for miles. The climate is mild so Dublin is a year-round destination. It's seldom freezing in winter, cool in summer and frequent light showers anytime, see County Dublin weather chart.

Here's how much Oasis tickets will cost as no Dublin gigs announced in slew of new dates
You could say we're Definitely, Maybe a little bit excited that Oasis has announced their highly-awaited comeback tour .
Yes, estranged brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have decided to bury the hatchet after 15 years and delight fans around the world with a tour in 2025.
Thankfully they're set to make a stop in Ireland for two gigs. Mark your calendars, because Oasis will be playing Dublin's Croke Park on Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, 2025.
On Thursday, it was announced that Oasis had added three tour dates to their UK and Ireland summer 2025 series, but failed to add any additional Dublin dates.
The band has instead added dates in Heaton Park, Manchester, Murrayfield, Edinburgh and Wembley, London.
Fans are already stressed about getting their hands on tickets after the hullabaloo caused by other artists such as Coldplay , Taylor Swift, and Sabrina Carpenter.
People have been left outraged in recent months by having to pay upwards of a couple of hundred euro just to nab one ticket to see their favourite artists, and are now hoping that won't be the case for Oasis.
Liam and Noel will reportedly rake in an eye-watering €15million in ticket sales from their two Croke Park gigs alone, with MCD Productions confirming ticket prices will start from €86.50 plus booking fee.
Unlike other artists, Oasis isn't making its fans jump through hoops for tickets. There will be no Ticketmaster presale for the event, rather it'll be on a 'first come, first serve' basis when tickets go on sale at 8am on Saturday, August 31.
However, the Gallagher brothers had their fans sign up for a pre-sale ballot in the hopes of receiving a code to get early access to tickets on Friday, August 30.
On Tuesday, Liam and Noel said on social media: 'The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.'
Oasis Live '25 will be taken to other continents, but at present, the Gallagher brothers are set to play in five cities across Ireland and the UK next summer.
According to bookies William Hill , per MailOnline , British rock band Kasabian are tipped to support Oasis on their upcoming tour, with odds at 7/4
We never thought we'd see the day when one of the Gallagher brothers extended an olive branch to the other, but we're delighted it's finally happened!
To think, this bitter 15-year feud all started over a lousy piece of fruit . Godspeed, Oasis fans. We're wishing you the best of luck with your ticket buying !

Irish Famine Exhibition
The Irish Potato Famine was the most catastrophic event in Ireland's turbulent history. It is also regarded as being one of the worst Famines in history (deaths as a proportion to population). The use of the word 'Famine' in this context is controversial, for Ireland at the time was part of the richest Empire in the World (the British Empire). There was sufficient food in the country throughout the 'Famine' years, yet over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to flee. This Exhibition tells the story of what happened during those horrific years. W

The Gallagher brothers announced Tuesday that they will play 14 shows in summer 2025, including four at London’s Wembley Stadium and four at Manchester’s Heaton Park. For their part, the Gallagher brothers added: “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”
According to the press release, plans are underway for the band to also tour outside of Europe next year.

On Sunday, the Gallaghers seemingly confirmed that Oasis would reunite after they both posted a cryptic clip on their respective X (formerly Twitter) accounts that displayed the date, “27.08.24.” The band’s official website also showed the same date on its main page, suggesting that an Oasis-related announcement would happen Tuesday.
That was not the only hint of a reunion: Over the weekend, Liam Gallagher responded to multiple fan inquiries and comments on X as reports about Oasis performing next year in the U.K. circulated online.
When one user complained about Oasis playing Heaton Park in Manchester, calling it a “terrible venue,” Liam Gallagher replied : “See you down the front you big fanny.”
The singer also wrote on X Sunday morning, “I never did like that word FORMER.”
In June, Liam Gallagher kicked off a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of Oasis ‘ debut studio album “Definitely Maybe.” A new reissue of the album will be released on Friday.

Oasis fans have already been placed in a queue for 2025 concert details
Unsurprisingly, news of brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher ending their long-standing sibling rivalry and announcing an Oasis reunion has broken the internet - so much so, that ticket seller Gigs and Tours is already placing fans in a queue before tickets go on sale on Saturday.
Liam teased a potential comeback for the 'Wonderwall' and 'Champagne Supernova' group following his set at Reading and Leeds Festival on Sunday , when text sharing details of an announcement on Tuesday at 8am was contained in the band’s familiar ‘boxed’ look and projected on the stage’s screens.
He also dedicated the song 'Half the World Away' (on which Noel does lead vocals) to his brother.
Oasis, Noel and Liam all shared the same teaser video at the weekend, while the latter further fuelled speculation by tweeting that he “never did like that word former”.
Then, sure enough, at the stated time, it was announced that Oasis would perform concerts in Cardiff (Principality Stadium), Manchester (Heaton Park), London (Wembley Stadium), Edinburgh (Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium) and Dublin (Croke Park) next year.
Oasis said in a statement : “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”
And so, as “it’s happening” continues to trend on Twitter/X in all caps, fans have been wondering how much they’ll have to fork out to see the Gallaghers perform together as Oasis for the first time in more than a decade.
The answer is: we don’t know, as ticket prices are yet to be confirmed - though reports suggest they’ll cost more than £100 each.
Given there’ll inevitably be a huge scramble for tickets on Saturday, people are already heading to sites such as Ticketmaster and Gigs and Tours to get all the ticket information they need before they go on sale at 8am (for the Ireland dates) and 9am (for the UK performances).
Except it seems a good number of people had the same idea, as Gigs and Tours’ website displayed a holding message to anyone who clicked through to its dedicated pages on the Oasis Live ’25 dates for a period on Tuesday morning.
The message reads: “Please bear with us. At the moment there are a lot of people trying to buy tickets, so we have put a queuing system in place, which is completely normal.”
Once the holding message disappears, the only information available is that around dates and locations, plus terms and conditions, which limit people to buying up to four tickets each.
Best of luck.

Oasis Dublin gigs sold out as fans left frustrated by queues and dynamic pricing
Tickets for the band's two Dublin gigs in Croke Park went live on Ticketmaster at 8 am, while tickets for the band's 15 UK shows in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Cardiff are set to go on general sale at 9 am.
The Oasis reunion concerts due to take place in Croke Park next August have sold out.
A message posted on the Ticketmaster website at 1.23pm on Saturday said, "UPDATE: There are currently no tickets available. Please check back later as more may be released."
Fans had reported issues from early on Saturday morning, including lengthy queues and dynamic pricing, which had caused in-demand tickets to soar in cost.
The reunion tour includes two shows in Croke Park next August, as well as concerns in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. The shows in Britain went on sale an hour after the Irish ones, potentially helping to fuel the demand for the Dublin shows.
From 8am on Ticketmaster, fans encountered issues. Instead of a page opening to buy tickets, an error number was displayed, which usually indicates a webpage is unable to handle any more connections. Hundreds of thousands of fans are still queuing for tickets, as they attempt to secure their spot at Croker.
More than 500,000 people eventually joined the queues, with huge demand evident for the band's reunion for the first time since 2009. A three-hour pre-sale on Friday night also saw a portion of tickets snapped up in advance of the general sale.
A long-time fan trying for tickets to see Oasis in Dublin said he feels “frustration” and “anger” after he was kicked out of the Ticketmaster queue.
Scott McLean, 28, logged into his account on the ticket-selling website at 7.30am on Saturday ahead of Irish sales opening at 8am.
He was in a queue of 20,000 for around 30 minutes before selecting four tickets to see the band’s show at Croke Park.
However, his browser began buffering for half an hour as he tried to make the purchase, prompting him to contact the Ticketmaster customer service account on X, formerly Twitter, for advice.
“I followed their advice, cleared my cookies and cache on my browser and then it kicked me out completely. It just came up to that error screen after I followed their guidance,” the business analyst from Belfast told the PA news agency.
“I had to rejoin the queue and I ended up about 700,000 places worse off after following their guidance.”
He said he feels “frustration and anger, not much more than that”, adding: “It’s just tickets for a concert after all, but I really wanted to go.”
Promoter MCD said on its website that the price of tickets for both of the two Croke Park gigs in Dublin would start at €86.50 without booking fees.
However, social media users reported on Saturday morning the lower-priced tickets were unavailable after waiting in queues for tickets on Ticketmaster and were instead offered tickets for demand standing tickets which cost over €400.
'Investigation'
Dublin Fine Gael MEP Regina Doherty has called for an investigation into Ticketmaster by the Competition and Consumer Commission (CCPC) due to the pricing structure and advertising of the gigs.
"When ticket prices were advertised earlier this week, standing tickets in Croke Park were €86.50 plus booking fees, but when many people eventually got through the online queue this morning, they were faced with the exact same ticket at a price of €415.50,” she said.
"That’s not transparent advertising and certainly not fair to consumers.
“The EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) has sections included specifically to ensure large platforms that control aspects of the digital economy don’t just make up their own rules that are unfair for consumers. I think Ticketmaster’s ‘in-demand’ pricing structure certainly needs investigating in this context.
“Every ticket for these gigs was always going to be ‘in-demand’ so slapping an extra label and €300 on some standing tickets is just extortionate.”
Ms Doherty said there is “more than enough evidence” in the aftermath of the Oasis sale to further investigate the pricing and advertising of larger gigs and added that she will be writing to the European Commission to ask them to examine their role at an EU level.
Tickets for Oasis concerts in the UK
An error code was also visible at gigsinscotland.com/artist/oasis as Scottish fans had difficulties getting onto the website for the Edinburgh shows.
The website tickets.seetickets.com/tour/oasis, where you can book for several UK shows, also appeared unavailable.
A message said: “Our website is very busy! We have lots of people looking for tickets and you are being held on this page until a space becomes available. This page will refresh automatically.”
UK tickets went on general sale at 9am through Gigs and Tours, ticketmaster.co.uk, gigsinscotland.com and seetickets.com.
Similar issues were seen on Manchester-based promoter SJM Concerts’ website Gigs and Tours is unable to load since around 8.10am.
It displays messages saying: “service unavailable” and “the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later”.
Standing tickets at Wembley will cost fans £151.25, with the same tickets in Cardiff and Edinburgh slightly cheaper at £150 and £151 respectively.
In the band’s home city of Manchester, tickets start from £148.50, with only standing available alongside several hospitality and luxury packages.
On Friday evening, the band issued a warning after unofficial reselling websites listed tickets obtained from the early sale for thousands of pounds.
A post to the band’s X page said: “We have noticed people attempting to sell tickets on the secondary market since the start of the pre-sale.
“Please note, tickets can ONLY be resold, at face value, via @Ticketmaster and @Twickets.
“Tickets sold in breach of the terms and conditions will be cancelled by the promoters.”
Tickets are officially being sold via Ticketmaster, GigsAndTours, and See Tickets, however, the band’s reunion concert tickets have also been relisted on ticket exchange and reselling websites for thousands of pounds.
Oasis tickets for Wembley Stadium were listed on Viagogo for up to £5,909 while some tickets at the London venue, listed under “Hospitality Club” were on sale for £10,578 on StubHub on Friday evening.
Resale is 'legal'
Ticket reseller Viagogo has defended having Oasis tickets on sale for inflated prices on its platform as a “legal” practice following the band warning concertgoers that passes bought outside of the official websites Ticketmaster and Twickets will be cancelled.
Cris Miller, Viagogo global managing director, said in a statement to the PA news agency: “This is a dream event anticipated by millions worldwide.
“Our number-one tip for fans using secondary marketplaces is to continue to check prices outside of the first few weeks of sale.
“Demand will be at its peak when tickets hit the on-sale but it’s not a normal reflection of what tickets can and will go for. Just this summer tickets for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in the UK sold on our platform for as low as £80.
“In the case of Oasis – a highly anticipated event – we saw the primary sites struggling to manage demand even before the on-sale, and site crashes.
“We know fans are frustrated with the process and we know there is a better way. We continue to support industry collaboration to ensure the entire ticketing market works for fans and the live entertainment industry.
“Resale is legal in the UK and fans are always protected by our guarantee that they will receive their tickets in time for the event or their money back.”
The StubHub website says all Oasis tickets “come with our FanProtect 100% guarantee for secure purchasing.” Lisa Webb, consumer law expert at Which?, said: “We’d strongly advise against buying any of the resale tickets currently popping up online at inflated prices.
“Not only is there a chance that some of these listings could be scam attempts, but even legitimate tickets could be cancelled, rendering them invalid, if they are sold outside of the official resale platforms or at above face value.”
StubHub have been approached for comment.

Oasis announce extra UK dates for reunion concert tour
Liam and Noel Gallagher have announced extra Oasis dates at Wembley Stadium, London, Heaton Park in Manchester, and the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, following "unprecedented demand" for a reunion tour ticket pre-sale.
Culture and entertainment reporter @gemmapeplow
Thursday 29 August 2024 15:00, UK
Oasis have announced three extra concert dates in the UK for their reunion tour next year, and revealed details of how much tickets will cost.
The band said they were adding the extra gigs due to "unprecedented demand" following registration for a ticket pre-sale.
They have also extended the deadline to confirm entries to the pre-sale, to 10am UK time on Friday, after worry from some social media users that they had not received responses. Fans who are successful in the ballot will be contacted by 5pm tomorrow with access information.
Noel and Liam Gallagher confirmed the band's reunion on Tuesday morning , following weeks of speculation. The comeback comes 15 years after Noel quit the band, spelling the end of Oasis , until now.
The additional gigs mean the band will now play five Wembley concerts, five in their home city, and three in Scotland - on top of two in Ireland and two in Wales.
The new dates are: 16 July at Heaton Park, Manchester; 30 July, Wembley Stadium, London; 12 August, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.
As with the initial gigs, the bulk of tickets for the new dates, following the pre-sale, go on sale on Saturday morning..
Due to a last minute surge in pre-sale ballot entries, a number of confirmation emails are still being processed and sent out. The deadline to confirm your entry has now been extended to 10am BST tomorrow morning (Friday 30th August). If successful in the ballot, you will be… — Oasis (@oasis) August 29, 2024
How much are tickets?
The new shows come after the band announced that some fans would be able to get their hands on tickets a day early through a pre-sale ballot - cue thousands of people rushing to register to be in with a chance .
A post on the Oasis social media channels said there had been an "unprecedented volume of entries".
Prices for the cheapest seats in London, Cardiff and Edinburgh range between £73 and £74.25, while standing tickets for the three venues will cost fans between £150 and £151.25, according to Manchester-based promoter SJM Concerts, which runs the website Gigs And Tours.
In Manchester, where only standing tickets are available, alongside a number of hospitality and luxury packages, tickets start from £148.50.
Before the announcement for UK shows, Irish promoters MCD said the price of both of the gigs in Dublin would start at 86.50 euros (£72.75), without booking fees.
The most expensive tickets available for Wembley are £506.25, which include a pre-show party and exhibition.
Fans have complained that hotels in the gig areas have already ramped up prices. One chain in Manchester was accused of cancelling a booking made prior to the reunion announcement - and relisting the room for a higher price .

Glastonbury rumours shut down
Ahead of the reunion announcement, some media reports suggested the band would be playing a record 10 dates at Wembley, as well as a headline performance at Glastonbury .
However, the band ended speculation about the festival slot, saying in a statement: "Despite media speculation, Oasis will not be playing Glastonbury 2025 or any other festivals next year. The only way to see the band perform will be on their Oasis Live '25 World Tour."
Plans are in place for further dates outside Europe, the band confirmed in the original announcement, but no further details have been released.

'The great wait is over'
Following weeks of speculation, both of the Gallagher brothers shared the reunion news on their social media sites on Tuesday, saying: "This is it, this is happening."
"The guns have fallen silent," Oasis said. "The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised."
Fifteen years after the band's break-up, the brothers were pictured together for the first time in years to mark the announcement, with the photograph understood to have been taken in London in July. It is not known whether they had met up prior to that.

Revealing details about why the reunion is finally happening now after years without speaking to each other, the band's statement said there had been "no great revelatory moment", but rather "the gradual realisation that the time is right".
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Oasis's debut album, Definitely Maybe - something they said must have been a "subconscious influence" on their decision.
Details of who else from Oasis's previous line-ups will rejoin them for the tour, or of other musicians in the pipeline, have yet to be confirmed.
They have not said whether there are any plans to release new music.
Amid concerns about touts and ticket prices, the band have partnered with Twickets as their official resale platform, "to ensure their 2025 UK tour tickets are resold for no more than face value and booking fees".
The Oasis website states: "Ticket resale is permitted at no more than the price you paid (face value + booking fees). Please only use the official resale partners www.twickets.live and Ticketmaster. Selling tickets through unauthorised resale platforms will breach these T&Cs and those tickets may be cancelled."

Is This Concert the Gold Standard for a Green Gig?
Coldplay and Billie Eilish have tried to drive down carbon emissions while touring, but the British band Massive Attack has tried to take the efforts even further.
By Alex Marshall
Reporting from Bristol, England
When the British band Massive Attack was halfway through a West Coast tour in 2019, flying from show to show, the rapper and singer Robert Del Naja had a moment of crisis. Given all the carbon emitted by moving the band and its equipment around, he recalled wondering: Can I justify this anymore?
Not long afterward, the band made a decision. It would work with climate scientists to develop a model for touring that made as little climate impact as possible.
On Sunday, Massive Attack staged a daylong 35,000-person festival in the band’s home city of Bristol, England, to showcase the carbon-cutting measures it has developed with the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research, a British organization, and A Greener Future, a nonprofit focused on lowering the music industry’s emissions.
Whereas other bands, including Coldplay, have staged attention-grabbing stunts to draw awareness to the industry’s climate impacts, they have sometimes ignored the main sources of emissions from gigs, such as audience travel and venues’ power supplies. With its show on Sunday, Massive Attack wanted to show how to tackle all of the polluting parts of a show.
In an interview a few days before the event, Del Naja said that previous music industry efforts to cut emissions had not been in line with the United Nations-agreed goal to stop average temperatures rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 Fahrenheit.
“If what you’re doing’s not 1.5 compatible, it’s irrelevant,” Del Naja said. “It’s simply a gesture, an idea. It’s not doing anything.”
Del Naja then gave a tour of the festival site, pointing out metal boxes filled with batteries charged by wind and solar power that would provide all the electricity, as well as electric trucks that would ferry equipment between stages. All the catering, including backstage, would be vegan, he added.
At one point, Del Naja walked up to a row of portable toilets. “Have you seen the compost loos?” he said. “They’re really cool.” The band would send some of the event’s waste to a firm that extracted phosphorous from urine, he explained.
The on-site changes will make some difference, but much of a show’s pollution comes from elsewhere. In 2007, the British band Radiohead published a study showing that audience travel was responsible for more than 80 percent of emissions for its tours.
Since then, few artists have had success tackling that issue. Billie Eilish’s team, for instance, emails ticket holders about public transit options before her gigs and, for a recent Los Angeles album launch, worked with L.A. Metro to increase services to the venue — though many fans would have had to first drive to a station.
Massive Attack tried several measures to encourage sustainable travel on Sunday, including offering Bristol residents the first chance to buy tickets, because they were more likely to walk or cycle. The band also negotiated with a local train company to provide extra services. And it hired a fleet of electric coaches to whiz attendees to and from Bristol city center to the festival site.
The Tyndall Center will publish a report this fall detailing the event’s climate impact, and Massive Attack will incorporate lessons from the study at coming gigs.
Del Naja said he hoped that promoters and venues would also learn something from the experiment. But he was realistic: In places like the car-loving West Coast of the United States, he said, bands needed lawmakers to overhaul transit systems to make it easier to avoid flying and driving.
The need for change is becoming pressing, because fans are increasingly traveling long distances to see their idols. Numerous American fans of Beyoncé , Taylor Swift and Adele flew to Europe to see those acts after failing to secure tickets closer to home. “The music industry has to work out a solution to that trend,” Christopher Jones, a Tyndall Center researcher, said, “otherwise emissions are going to keep going up.”
On Sunday, despite Massive Attack’s efforts, a handful of fans said in interviews that they had come from outside Britain to see the band. Andres Henriquez, 26, waiting in line to buy merchandise, said that he had flown from Miami to see the group and that he felt “selfish” about it.
Marianne Hagstrom, 56, a teacher, said that she and her husband had traveled by train from Gothenburg, Sweden. “We need to switch the way we are thinking,” Hagstrom said. “Train travel must become cheaper for people to stop flying.”
Around the sprawling site, not everything was low carbon. Many of the vegan food stalls, for instance, used portable gas canisters, rather than renewable energy, to power their grills. Del Naja said he knew that the event wasn’t perfect, but he added that the band would learn from the festival’s failures to make future events even more sustainable.
His greatest fear, Del Naja said before the show, was that the batteries for the power supply would fail midway and that the music and light would cut out. Others in the music industry would then dismiss the festival as a failed experiment, he said.
In the end, his worries proved unfounded. On Sunday, the lights flashed and music boomed throughout, and the crowd seemed happy with the vegan burgers — despite the lengthy lines .
The only problem, it turned out, was rain. At about 8:30 p.m., as spotlights flashed across the crowd, Massive Attack walked onstage and launched into “ Risingson ,” a dark electronic track that opens their 1998 hit album “Mezzanine.” As the band played, many fans cheered, but others were too distracted by a sudden storm and desperately rifled through their bags for ponchos.
Massive Attack had done all it could to combat climate change, but there was nothing it could do about Britain’s weather.
