Experience Hendrix Adds More Dates, Guitarists

For the eighth year, the music of Jimi Hendrix will be celebrated with the all-star Experience Hendrix  tour. The organizers just announced a few more concerts, as well as some of the special guests that will be joining them in certain cities.

Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and Robby Krieger of the Doors are two of the biggest names added to the bill. Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes , Taj Mahal and Quinn Sullivan will also make several appearances. They join guitarists such as Buddy Guy, Zakk Wylde, Bootsy Collins and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, with a rhythm section of Billy Cox and Chris Layton.

The tour will now begin on March 8 in Shawnee, Okla., and conclude on April 8 in Minneapolis. The new tour dates include a second stop in Milwaukee, where the March 16 show has already sold out. The Experience Hendrix Tour, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix that’s been an on-again, off-again presence in the music world since its inception in 1995, will return in 2014, Radio.com reports .

The tribute tour will feature a score of players in the rock world, including Buddy Guy, Bootsy Collins, Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa , Jonny Lang and many more.

Bootsy Collins

Running at a little over three weeks, Experience Hendrix will commence March 11 in Dallas, Texas, with an end at Detroit’s Fox Theater on April 3.

Wylde and Ana Popovic are the tour’s rookies, while the rest of the roster have played the circuit in some incarnation or form in years past.

Experience Hendrix began in 1995 as the Jimi Hendrix Guitar Festival at Bumbershoot.

Jimi Hendrix “Experience Hendrix” Tour – State Theater – Minneapolis, MN – April 8, 2014

Downtown Minneapolis is littered with fans of classic rock, guitar, and most notably, Jimi Hendrix, on the evening of April 8, 2014. They are on their way to see “Experience Hendrix”, one of the largest tributes to the rock legend, Jimi Hendrix, ever brought to the stage.

On this particular evening, “Experience Hendrix” is performed at the State Theater in Minneapolis, MN. There are several notable performers onstage from groups spanning classic and modern rock. They include performers such as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, Doyle Bramhall II, blue guitarist from The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo from Los Lobos, Dweezil Zappa, Chris Layton, blues drummer from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble and Mato Nanji from the blues group Indigenous. Along with all these fantastic musicians is a man that worked with Jimi Hendrix as well, Billy Cox. Billy Cox is the last surviving member of both The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. Needless to say, his presence at the State Theater is something special for the fans.

I would have to say that this was an ideal show for any fan of guitars. The guitarists in this show are absolutely amazing. There is no other way to explain it. There are solos that go on for so long that many wonder if it is ever going to end. Still, it in no way detours their overall enjoyment of the show.

It’s hard to say where the exact highlights of the show lie. There are numerous examples, one being the very beginning, in which Jimi Hendrix’s little sister, Janie Hendrix, took the stage to showcase the new Jimi Hendrix stamp. Depending on a fan’s particular love of Jimi’s music depends entirely on which part of the show they enjoy the most, however, a great highlight is when Johnny Lang takes the stage. Johnny Lang has a tremendous following in Minnesota, so there are several fans of his that are thrilled to see him. He puts his whole heart into his performance of “All Along the Watchtower” and more.

A number of different songs are performed, some that only the very big fans of Jimi Hendrix know and some that all of us with a radio are familiar with. “Manic Depression” is a favorite that plays near the beginning of the concert and performed incredibly. Better known tunes include “Purple Haze”, “Foxy Lady”, “Angel”, “Voodoo Child”, and many more. A few personal favorites that play near the end of the show are “Red House” and “Hey Joe”.

I think it would have been interesting seeing this sort of performance in a different venue, as it is clear that many fans want to stand up and dance to various performances (“Voodoo Child” being a favorite). However, due to the overall age range of most of the fans, it is out of sheer respect that most of the audience remains sitting. That is something you don’t often see, but it was something the crowd at The State takes seriously.

This is the last night of the tour, something that the performers take note of. They all graciously thank the audience and overall, everyone that has seen them on the tour. It is a tour that I personally hope is done again because it is something to see. It feels less like a show and more like a gathering of a lot of people who simply have an appreciation for music.

Experience Hendrix evokes the era when artists treated each performance as a unique interaction with their audience. Jimi Hendrix called this his ‘Electric Church.’ Experience Hendrix fully embraces this approach, presenting multiple opportunities for performers and audiences to witness unique collaborations among the participating artists, and will highlight these artists performing their favorite Hendrix signature songs including “Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” Guitarists scheduled to perform at Experience Hendrix’s Smith Center tour stop include popular blues-rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd; Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde; jazz-rock Grammy® winner Eric Johnson; blues legend Taj Mahal; Noah Hunt; Chuck Campbell and Calvin Cooke of The Slide Brothers; Stanley Jordan; Mato Nanji of Indigenous; Dylan Triplett; Ayron Jones; and Henri Brown*. *Artists are subject to change.

The tour presents a host of great artists collaborating and interpreting Hendrix’s legendary songs as part of a powerhouse, three-hour concert experience. The wide range of multi-generational artists who participate in a reflection of the ecumenicism of Jimi Hendrix’s classic repertoire and the diversity of those whose lives have been indelibly affected by his music. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one of the major players in forthcoming edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour and a veteran of previous EH’s outings. Shepherd, a five-time Grammy nominee and recipient of two Billboard Music Awards commented, “I’m excited to rejoin the Experience Hendrix tour this year. It’s always been a great tour with exceptional artists honoring Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player of all time, and his amazing and expansive catalog of songs. Being able to do a tour with friends always makes for a great time and this show is not to be missed.”
