Travel Guard by AIG

  • Offers last-minute coverage.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Exclusion Waiver available at all plan levels.
  • Plan available for business travelers.
  • Cancel For Any reason coverage only available for higher-level plans, and only reimburses up to 50% of the trip cost.
  • Trip interruption coverage doesn't apply to trips paid for with points and miles.

As one of the world’s largest insurance companies and with a 100-year history, it makes sense that AIG would offer travel insurance. AIG’s travel insurance program, called Travel Guard, provides a number of coverage options to offer peace of mind on your trips.

Travel insurance helps you get some money back if anything goes wrong on your trip. If you’re thinking about buying coverage for an upcoming trip, first look into the coverage you may get from your travel credit cards . Many basic protections are offered on cards that you may already have.

If you’re looking for additional coverage, AIG travel insurance is a solid choice. Consumers Advocate rated AIG’s plans at 4.4 stars out of 5 stars.

Importantly, if you catch COVID-19 before or during your trip, you will be covered under Travel Guard’s trip cancellation benefit. If you become sick with COVID-19 during the trip, the medical expenses and trip interruption benefits will kick in. However, Travel Guard considers COVID-19 a foreseen event and as a result, certain other coronavirus-related losses may not be covered. Given the constantly evolving travel environment, review the Travel Guard’s coronavirus coverage policies so that you’re award of what is and isn’t covered.

Here’s what you need to know about AIG's Travel Guard insurance plans.

AIG travel insurance’s Travel Guard plans cover you if you need to cancel (or interrupt) your trip due to illness, injury or death of a family member. Inclement weather that causes a trip delay or cancellation is covered by all Travel Guard policies as well.

Travel Guard offers three main AIG travel insurance plans, plus a host of add-on options. Here are the most essential benefits:

Travel Guard Essential - The most basic level of coverage

Covers 100% of the cost of your trip if it gets canceled or interrupted due to illness.

Includes a $100 per day reimbursement for any delays in your trip (max $500 total).

Covers up to $15,000 in medical expenses ($500 dental), plus a $150,000 maximum for emergency medical evacuation.

Covers up to $750 in compensation for stolen luggage and a maximum of $200 if your bags get delayed by more than 24 hours.

Travel Guard Preferred - This midlevel plan gives many of the same basic coverages as the Essential, but at higher levels.

Trip cancellation pays out at 100%. If your trip gets interrupted, you’ll get 150% of the cost of the trip.

Trips delayed by more than five hours will get you up to $800 ($200/day).

You’ll be covered up to $50,000 for medical expenses ($500 dental) and up to $500,000 for emergency evacuation.

This plan offers $1,000 for lost or stolen bags and $300 for baggage delays longer than 12 hours.

Travel Guard Deluxe - The biggest benefits can be found in this highest level plan.

Like the Preferred, you’ll get 100% coverage for trip cancellation and 150% of the cost of your insured trip in the event of a trip interruption.

Up to $1,000 ($200/day) for a trip delay of five hours or more.

Up to $100,000 for medical expenses ($500 dental), $1,000,000 for emergency evacuation and $100,000 in coverage for a flight accident.

Coverage for lost or stolen bags jumps up to $2,500 and $500 for baggage delay of more than 12 hours.

A long list of "Travel Inconvenience Benefits" are also included (such as runway delays, closed attractions, diversions, etc.)

This plan also offers roadside assistance coverage for the duration of your trip, which isn't included in the other two plans.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

Travel Guard’s website is simple to navigate and provides instant quotes that clearly spell out what's covered. You’ll need to enter basic information about the trip you want coverage for, including:

Destination.

How you’re getting there (airplane, cruise or other).

Travel dates.

Your home state.

Date of birth.

How much you paid for the trip.

The date when you paid for the trip.

Once you answer the questions, you’ll instantly get price quotes for different options of insurance for your trip. Each column clearly shows what’s covered for all options in a long list, so you can quickly compare.

expedia travel guard phone number

This example shows options based on a two-week $5,000 trip to Spain for someone who is 40 years old. In this case, the mid-tier plan costs about 6% of the total trip cost.

It’s also important to know that plan offerings change based on what state you live in; not all states are covered.

If you purchase a Travel Guard plan and need to file a claim, you can do it on their website or by calling (866) 478-8222. You can also track the status of the payment of your claim on the site.

If you’re planning multiple trips that you would like covered, look at Travel Guard’s Annual Travel Insurance Plan. This 12-month option covers multiple trips and could save you money over insuring each trip separately.

Another option is the "Pack and Go" plan, which is a good choice if you’re going on a last-minute getaway and don’t need trip cancellation protection.

There are also options to add rental vehicle damage coverage, Cancel For Any Reason coverage, and medical and security bundles to the plans. You’ll be able to select these add-ons when you’re purchasing a policy.

» Learn more: Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance explained

While the Essential, Preferred and Deluxe plans all offer varying degrees of coverage for your trip, there are some things that won’t be covered by any of the plans. Here are a few highlights of things that aren't included; you’ll find full lists on each policy:

Coverage for trips paid for with frequent flyer miles or loyalty rewards programs: Travel Guard will only protect the trips you pay for with cash. If you’re redeeming your points for that bucket list trip, unfortunately, you won’t qualify for coverage. However, the cost of redepositing miles back into your account is covered.

Baggage loss for eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids or false teeth: These items should be kept with you in your carry-on as a general rule, since a Travel Guard policy won’t cover them.

Known events: If you knowingly book a trip with some inherent risks, it won’t be covered. For example, once the National Weather Service issues a warning for a hurricane, it becomes a known event. Once COVID-19 became a pandemic, it was categorized as a foreseeable event and was no longer covered. You can cancel the policy you purchase up to 15 days prior to your trip to receive a refund for the premium paid.

» Learn more: Does travel insurance cover award flights?

Many trips may be sufficiently covered by your credit card benefits, but you should do research to see which cards provide the best options (and remember to use that card to book the trip).

However, if you’re planning major international travel or embarking on a big cruise trip, Travel Guard's Preferred and Deluxe plans may offer better coverage than your credit card. Overall, Travel Guard plans offer a variety of coverage options with an easy-to-navigate website that could be a good fit for your next trip.

If you’re not finding what you’re looking for with a Travel Guard plan, check out an insurance comparison site like Squaremouth, where you will have a lot of different plan options to choose from.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth it?

Travel Guard offers several trip insurance plans with varying degrees of coverage. Some plans also allow you to purchase optional upgrades such as CFAR and auto rental coverage. Plan availability differs by state, so make sure you input your trip details to see what plans are available to you.

If you have a premium travel credit card, you may already have some elements of travel insurance coverage included for free. Before you decide to purchase a comprehensive policy, check what coverage you may already have from your credit card.

Travel Guard’s insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical coverage and evacuation, baggage delay, baggage loss, and more. Some policies may also allow you to add on benefits like Cancel For Any Reason and car rental damage coverage.

If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason (e.g., unforeseen sickness or injury of you or your family member, required work, victim of a crime, inclement weather, financial default of travel supplier, etc.) you will be covered. To see the whole list of covered reasons, refer to the terms and conditions of your policy.

To get a refund, you will need to file a claim by either calling (866) 478-8222 or submitting it online at its claims page . You may be required to provide verifying documentation to substantiate your claims so keep any receipts that you intend to submit. You can also check the status of your claim at any time on Travel Guard’s website .

The Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade is available on certain Travel Guard plans. Travel Guard’s CFAR add-on allows you to cancel a trip for any reason whatsoever and get 50%-75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as the trip is canceled at least two days prior to the scheduled departure date.

Does Expedia Have 24-Hour Customer Service? Everything You Need to Know

customer services

Traveling can be an incredibly exciting experience, but it can also be stressful when things don’t go according to plan. That’s where customer service comes in, and when it comes to booking travel, you want to make sure the company you choose has reliable and efficient customer service. Expedia is one of the largest online travel agencies in the world, but does it have 24-hour customer service? In this blog post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of Expedia’s customer service, including whether or not they offer 24-hour support, how to contact them, and the pros and cons of using their customer service. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or just planning your next vacation, this post will provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision about using Expedia.

What is Expedia?

Expedia is an online travel agency that was founded in 1996 as a division of Microsoft. In 2001, it became a standalone company and has since grown to become one of the largest online travel companies in the world. Expedia operates in over 70 countries, offering travelers the ability to book flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and vacation packages. The company has a vast network of travel partners, including airlines, hotels, and car rental companies, which allows them to offer customers a wide range of travel options at competitive prices.

Expedia’s website is user-friendly and easy to navigate, with a variety of search filters that make it easy to find the perfect travel options for your needs. The website also offers travel guides and reviews, so you can get a better idea of what to expect from your trip. Expedia has also developed mobile apps for iOS and Android, making it easy for travelers to book their trips on the go.

One of the unique features of Expedia is the Expedia Rewards program. This program allows customers to earn points on their bookings, which can then be redeemed for discounts on future travel. Expedia Rewards members also have access to exclusive deals and promotions.

Expedia’s Customer Service

Expedia has a reputation for providing excellent customer service, and they offer a variety of ways for customers to get in touch with them. Customers can contact Expedia’s customer service team via phone, email, or live chat. The company also has a dedicated customer service Twitter account (@ExpediaHelp) where customers can ask for help or get support.

Expedia’s customer service team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist customers with any questions or issues they may have. The company has customer service teams located around the world, which allows them to provide support in multiple languages.

In addition to traditional customer service, Expedia has developed a self-service platform called Expedia Partner Central. This platform allows hotel partners to manage their inventory, rates, and availability, as well as access analytics and reports. This system streamlines the booking process, making it easier for customers to find the right hotel at the right price.

Expedia’s customer service team is known for being responsive and helpful, with a focus on resolving customer issues quickly and efficiently. The company also offers a satisfaction guarantee, promising to work with customers to resolve any issues and make things right.

24-Hour Customer Service

One of the most significant benefits of using Expedia is its 24-hour customer service. This means that no matter what time of day or night it is, customers can get in touch with Expedia’s customer service team for assistance.

24-hour customer service is particularly important for travelers, as issues can arise at any time. Whether it’s a flight delay or a problem with a hotel reservation, having access to 24-hour customer service can help alleviate stress and ensure that issues are resolved quickly.

Expedia’s 24-hour customer service is available via phone, email, or live chat. The company’s phone support is available around the clock, with separate phone numbers for customers located in the United States and Canada, as well as international numbers for customers located in other countries.

Email support is also available 24 hours a day, and customers can expect a response within 24 hours of sending their message. Live chat support is another option for customers who prefer to communicate via chat rather than phone or email. The live chat feature is available on Expedia’s website and mobile app, making it easy for customers to get help on the go.

In addition to traditional customer service channels, Expedia also has a robust help center on its website. This help center includes a variety of articles and guides on topics like booking, cancellations, refunds, and more. Customers can also use the search function to find answers to specific questions or issues they may be experiencing.

One of the potential downsides of Expedia’s 24-hour customer service is that wait times can vary depending on the time of day and the volume of customers seeking assistance. During peak travel times, such as holidays or the summer vacation season, wait times may be longer than usual. However, the company is known for prioritizing urgent issues and working quickly to resolve them.

How to Contact Expedia’s Customer Service

There are several ways to get in touch with Expedia’s customer service team. The easiest and most convenient way is to use the live chat feature on the company’s website or mobile app. This allows customers to get help quickly and easily without having to wait on hold or navigate through a complex phone tree.

Another option is to call Expedia’s customer service hotline. The phone number is available on the company’s website and varies depending on the customer’s location. Customers in the United States and Canada can call 1-800-319-4834, while international customers can find their specific country’s phone number on Expedia’s website.

Email support is also available 24 hours a day, and customers can expect a response within 24 hours of sending their message. To send an email, customers can fill out the contact form on Expedia’s website or send an email directly to [email protected].

Finally, customers can also reach out to Expedia’s customer service team via social media. The company has accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and customers can send direct messages to the accounts to get help or ask questions.

Pros and Cons of Expedia’s Customer Service

Expedia’s customer service has several benefits, including its 24-hour availability, multiple channels of communication, and knowledgeable representatives. The company’s customer service team is known for being responsive and helpful, with a focus on resolving issues quickly and efficiently. Additionally, the help center on Expedia’s website provides a wealth of information and resources for customers to use.

However, there are also some potential downsides to Expedia’s customer service. Wait times can be long during peak travel times, and some customers have reported difficulty in getting their issues resolved. Additionally, while the company’s representatives are knowledgeable, there have been some complaints about their level of empathy and willingness to go above and beyond for customers.

Alternatives to Expedia’s Customer Service

While Expedia’s customer service is generally reliable and efficient, there are some alternatives for customers who prefer a different approach. One option is to book travel directly through the airline or hotel’s website, which often has its own customer service team available for assistance.

Another option is to use a travel agency or booking service that specializes in personalized service and support. These agencies often have dedicated travel advisors who can assist with everything from booking flights to planning itineraries and recommending activities.

Finally, some credit card companies offer travel concierge services as a perk of their premium cards. These services provide personalized assistance with travel booking and planning, including access to dedicated customer service representatives who are available 24/7 to help with any issues or questions.

Howie Mandel Claims This Season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ Is Best One Yet

Comedian says, ‘just when you think you’ve seen everything, you ain’t seen nothing yet’.

Linda Childers,

A smiling Howie Mandel wearing a hat and sunglasses against a purple background

Howie Mandel, 68, remembers the day he found his purpose . “On April 19, 1977, the first day I got on stage [to perform comedy,] I felt like a success, because I found something that made me happy,” he says, adding, “It’s never too late to find something you enjoy and you’re excited about.” One thing the America’s Got Talent judge is excited about is the current season of the long-running show. Mandel teases that Season 19 is sure to wow viewers, and he shares with AARP how he’s coping with his mental health challenges, why he started a podcast with his daughter, and the joys of being a grandfather.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You’ve been a judge on America’s Got Talent since 2010. What continues to surprise you about the show?

That there is this much talent that’s undiscovered. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, you realize you ain’t seen nothing yet.… And this new season is probably the most outrageous, exciting, dangerous, thrilling season we’ve had to date.

Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofía Vergara and Simon Cowell with Terry Crews and an audience behind them on "America's Got Talent"

You’re also touring the country doing stand-up. How has your comedy changed over the years?

After over 40 years of stand-up, I have a plethora of material and things to draw from, but I like to be taken off guard. It’s exciting to have something technically go wrong. It’s exciting to have somebody walking in in the middle, or for there to be a noise or a disruption, just to make it different and real and authentic. And so I’ll play off the moment ... and that makes it exciting. And I hope that each and every person that ever comes to see me has an identifiable moment to go, “I was there that night the lady with the red hat walked in late.”

You’ve been open about being diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder. What advice can you share about managing OCD?

First, talk about it and be open. It’s much more prevalent than people realize.… So talk about it and know that there are outlets and treatments that can make living with OCD easier and better for you.

You’ve also been candid about your struggles with anxiety and depression. How do you stay grounded?

It’s a constant struggle. Every waking moment is a struggle, but I think that’s true for everyone. Life is a struggle, whether you’ve been diagnosed with depression or not. Whether you’re dealing with mental or physical health, the loss of a loved one, the pressure of work, the loss of work, the amount of responsibility, children, loneliness — life can be tough. We all need coping skills, and I learned later in life that those aren’t something we all learn. [When I was growing up], there was a stigma involved with not being OK, and it took me a while to realize life isn’t always OK for everyone. Every part of life is an adjustment. So how do we adjust and cope? Maybe you exercise more or do breathing exercises or find a hobby you enjoy. It’s important to find something that makes you as comfortable, happy and productive as possible.

What advice would you give to others about managing depression?

When you have a mental health issue, it’s very confining in the sense that it’s happening in your head, and it can be hard to talk about. You also believe nobody else understands your feelings, and it can seem easier to curl up in the fetal position and stay in your room. I will tell you there is a light at the end of all these tunnels and a lot of people do understand what you’re going through. I’ve learned just by virtue of being human that we all go through depression. Don’t ever give up, [because the first therapist you see or the initial medication you take may not be the right fit]. I’ve had to change dosages and even change doctors.

Do you still enjoy running?

Yes, but I don’t run for as long as I did in the past, and part of that is because I’m busier now than I’ve ever been with touring, my podcast, filming America’s Got Talent , Canada’s Got Talent and producing Deal or No Deal Island . I try to run at least 3 miles a day now. It’s my time to relax, and it’s a form of meditation for me. When I’m running, I can hear my heartbeat and steps, and it’s a good escape.

You and your wife, Terry, have been married for more than 40 years. What’s your secret?

Well, Terry would probably tell you it’s because I’m so busy and not around. Terry is incredibly patient. I’m the hard one. I feel like the lucky one to have her as my partner. She’s smart and funny and successful and a great mother and a great human. She’s also incredibly patient, because I’m a handful, and I can tell you this firsthand, because I’m with myself every waking moment.

How did your Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast with your daughter come about? And how do you choose the different topics and guests?

My daughter Jackelyn [Shultz] and I were communicating via telephone throughout the pandemic. We would spend hours on the phone, not only talking but also doing prank calls. I’d tell my daughter a story about a celebrity friend, and say, “You’re not gonna believe they did this. I’m gonna call him right now with you on the phone, and you’re gonna hear how they did this.” It became a daily ritual, and one day my wife says, “You two do this every day. You’re calling people and doing prank calls. What’s this for?” We were just having fun, but my wife suggested we record our conversations, and that turned into the beginning of a fun podcast. We talk about whatever interests us. This week, we spoke to a new young comic I met in Hawaii and a hospice nurse.

What do you like to do on your days off from work?

I don’t like to have days off from work, so I’m always doing something. I’ll drop in on a comedy club, or write, or record a TikTok or Instagram story. Comedy is my hobby and my love — everything I’ve ever gotten in trouble for over the years is what I get paid to do.

How often do you get to see your three grandchildren?

Any waking moment I can. I see my grandkids almost every day. The third one [4-month-old granddaughter Noa, born to Mandel’s daughter Riley Ehrlich] is harder because she lives a little farther [away], so I see her a couple of times a week. But the other ones live really close to me. [Jackelyn has two children, Abbey, 9, and Axel, 8.] And I see them and they’re at my house or I go to their plays and things like that.

What lessons do you hope to pass on to your grandkids?

They’re growing up in a much harder world than I did. And as far as their social media, there is pressure to be like something you see, to have more than what they have, or to have something better than what somebody else has. I try to tell them that all that is fake and not real. And what they’re doing is amazing. There’s a reason it’s called “self-esteem,” because that esteem has to come from yourself and not from anybody else. So you give them their own self-worth. You make them feel good about themselves and about what they’re doing.

Do you have any career goals you’d still like to accomplish?

I don’t plan. If it presents itself in front of me, I’ve always said yes. I don’t look for something and then try to achieve that. I take each day as it comes. So right now, I’m really content for the most part with what I’m doing and how I’m doing it. You know, I just want to just continue working, and for tomorrow to be as good as today.

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Outside an ancient Roman structure -- the Colosseum in Rome -- a young woman in light summer clothing pours a bottle of water on a man's neck.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”
