Initiative creates new opportunities for world’s best amateur players; Pathways created to the DP World Tour and eight global Tours

Change Text Size

The DP World Tour, The R&A and the PGA TOUR launched Tuesday the Global Amateur Pathway – powered by the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®) – to help the very best male amateur players take the next step in their careers.

The landmark initiative creates a pathway for non-collegiate amateur players on to the DP World Tour and partner Tours around the world. The Global Amateur Pathway will complement PGA TOUR University – which awards membership on PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tours to the top Division-I college golfers at the end of the NCAA Championship – to ensure opportunities are available for elite players across the amateur ranks.

Under the Global Amateur Pathway, the best eligible non-collegiate male amateur within the top 20 of the WAGR will receive a DP World Tour card for the following season. WAGR comprises a women’s ranking and a men’s ranking for elite amateur players and is offered by The R&A and the USGA as a global service to golf. Players competing in Global Amateur Pathway eligible championships earn points equivalent to the number of points awarded by WAGR.

The Global Amateur Pathway strengthens, and demonstrates the benefits of, the Strategic Alliances forged by the DP World Tour to provide global player pathways. As such, further exemptions will be available on the European Challenge Tour – part of the European Tour Group – while the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR are working with seven further partner Tours, within their respective governance process and timelines, to finalize their participation. The first Global Amateur Pathway Ranking Period will conclude on 13 October 2024 and the first exemptions will be awarded for the 2025 season.

Several current PGA TOUR and DP World Tour members would have benefited if the Global Amateur Pathway had previously existed. Players such as Tommy Fleetwood (Southport, England), Hideki Matsuyama (Ehime, Japan) and Min Woo Lee (Perth, Australia) were accomplished amateurs who relied on sponsor exemptions to begin their professional careers. Fleetwood was runner-up at the 2008 Amateur Championship and represented GB&I at the 2009 Walker Cup; Matsuyama was a two-time winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and became the first Japanese male to rise to No. 1 in WAGR; and Lee made two appearances in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, including a tied third finish in 2017, and represented Australia at the 2018 World Amateur Team Championship, where he finished T6.

The Global Amateur Pathway would have provided these players with professional membership and a clear path forward as they worked toward careers on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour.

Guy Kinnings, DP World Tour Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to offer the very best amateur players new opportunities through the Global Amateur Pathway, alongside our partners at The R&A and PGA TOUR.

“This initiative is the perfect example of the benefits that come from the Strategic Alliances and partnerships that we have forged across the game of golf. The very best amateur players now have similar opportunities to their professional counterparts, with clear pathways across the globe to ultimately compete at the pinnacle of the game.

“This complements the opportunities for collegiate players via PGA TOUR University, and there is no better example of the benefits of that programme than young European Ryder Cup star Ludvig Åberg, who has grasped every opportunity that has come his way with both hands.

“Our thanks go to The R&A and PGA TOUR, and to each of the Tours who are coming together to make this dream a reality for the next generation of amateur players.”

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with the DP World Tour and the PGA TOUR to launch the Global Amateur Pathway.

“We care deeply about amateur golf and developing pathways for the most talented players from different regions of the world is one of our fundamental priorities. It is key to the sustainable future of the sport.

“We continue to create opportunities for elite amateurs to compete at the highest level through our leading amateur championships and the Global Amateur Pathway provides the players with a route to the professional ranks. We look forward to watching them progress in their careers and will now explore the opportunities to introduce a similar pathway in the women’s game.”

“We are thrilled to partner with the DP World Tour and The R&A to take another step forward in strengthening the pathway for amateur athletes as they transition to professional golf,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Building on the success of PGA TOUR University over the last four years, the Global Amateur Pathway will ensure the best young players from around the world can earn their way onto golf’s biggest stages more efficiently than ever before.”

To be eligible for the Global Amateur Pathway Ranking, amateur golfers must meet the following criteria:

  • Not be a current NCAA Division-I player
  • Be at least 20 years of age by the end of the calendar year of the relevant Ranking Period
  • Be within the top 200 WAGR
  • Players who are outside the top 200 WAGR by the end of the Registration Period who then move into the top 100 WAGR at any time prior to the conclusion of the Late Registration Period in the relevant season

Following rounds of 63, 66 and 66, Sebastian Soderberg had a commanding eight-shot lead heading into Sunday at the DP World Tour's Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed in his home country of Sweden. It seemed like it was not a matter of if he'd win for the second time on the European circuit, but by how many.

RELATED: Jon Rahm WDs from LIV ahead of U.S. Open with foot injury

After an early birdie at the par-5 third, a potential double-digit victory was in Soderberg's sights. Things took an ugly turn from there, though, when he went bogey-bogey and wound up playing the front nine in one over par. His lead began to shrink, and two bogeys and six pars over his next eight holes saw his lead shrink to one shot on the 72nd tee box.

Just one back at 17 under was fellow Swede Linn Grant, who became the first female to win on the DP World Tour in 2022 when she won this tournament in just its second year of being a mixed male and female event. On Sunday, Grant began the day 11 shots back of Soderberg and was able to close that gap with a bogey-free seven-under 65.

Needing a Soderberg bogey to make it into a playoff, Grant headed to the range to stay warm. What happened next was downright shocking, as Soderberg's approach found a greenside bunker. From there he hit his third to 25 feet, setting up a must-make to win or a two-putts to tie and head to a playoff scenario. Soderberg's par putt came up a few feet short and his bogey effort violently lipped out:

Soderberg's stunning double bogey capped off a final-round 77, earning him a T-2 finish with Callum Hill after beginning the day eight clear of the field. Brutal.

Grant, 24, produced a much different scene on the 18th at Vasatorps Golfklubb, which happens to be in her hometown of Helsingborg. Here was her third shot from just off the green, which pulled her within three of Soderberg at the time:

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DP World Tour (@dpworldtour)

That shot turned out to be the one that helped her win in regulation, giving Grant her second victory in this event in three years. As incredible as that was, even Grant felt a little bad for her fellow Swede.

"Very mixed emotions," Grant said. "I feel honestly terrible for Sebastian at the moment, I don't even have words for it. I can't imagine how he feels, but at the same time I'm just surprised, like so surprised. Standing here now as a winner again, in my hometown, amazing."

With the win, Grant made just over $337,000, the same amount Soderberg would have won had he held on. While the men and women play from a different set of tees for this event, they play for the same prize money as well as Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup points. This win, Grant's sixth on the Ladies European Tour, should go a long way in earning grant a second European Solheim Cup team appearance later this year.

Scottie Scheffler drops Jack Nicklaus story after winning 2024 Memorial

World number one Scottie Scheffler claimed his fifth PGA Tour win in eight starts at the 2024 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

dp world tour golf jobs

Scottie Scheffler revealed in the immediate aftermath of his fifth PGA Tour victory of the year that Jack Nicklaus told him one day he'd win the Memorial Tournament .

Scheffler started the day with a four-stroke lead over Sepp Straka and Collin Morikawa .

NEW: SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER ON COLLIN MORIKAWA - "I DON'T WANT TO INSULT HIM OR ANYTHING, BUT..."

In the end it was Scheffler who emerged triumphant with a one-stroke win after a dogfight with his Ryder Cup teammate.

The 27-year-old Scheffler carded a final round of two-over 74 to reach eight-under par.

"I feel like I've had some close calls in this tournament," Scheffler told Amanda Balionis .

"This is a tough place to close out. As you saw today the golf course was playing so tough.

"I remember shaking Mr Nicklaus 's hand a few years ago here and he told me I didn't make the putt today but one day I'll make the putt and be able to shake his hand and he was right.

"So that was a pretty surreal moment, to be able to shake his hand as a winner here. I'm honoured."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by PGA TOUR (@pgatour)

Elsewhere, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele finished inside the top-10 of the signature event.

Rory McIlroy shot a four-over 76 and finished in a tie for 15th with Viktor Hovland .

England's Tommy Fleetwood finished 20th.

Scheffler was made to work extremely hard for his 14th PGA Tour title.

Bogeys at the fourth and eighth holes allowed the chasing pack a glimmer of hope.

Morikawa responded with a birdie at the 12th, sinking a 32 foot putt to close the gap.

But in truth Scheffler closed the door at the 16th, making a clutch 15 footer for par whilst Morikawa could only manage a bogey.

Scottie Scheffler

"16, 17 and 18 were playing brutally tough," added Scheffler.

"It was a fun test of golf and I like it when it gets this hard.

"It was good to battle it out. Like you said, I didn't do a whole lot great today but I did enough to get the job done."

Scheffler will attempt to win his third major next week at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2.

Unsurprisingly, he is the overwhelming favourite to clinch the third men's major of the year.

Matthieu Pavon ‘flying like an eagle’ at U.S. Open after brutal PGA Tour stretch

Matthieu Pavon, who won the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year, is in the mix early at the 124th U.S. Open.

Matthieu Pavon, U.S. Open

Since tying for 12th at the Masters, Matthieu Pavon has kept on slipping, slipping, and slipping.

He tied for 49th at the RBC Heritage and almost finished dead last at Quail Hollow. The Frenchman then went on to miss the cut at both the PGA Championship and the Memorial .

His game has been lost—a stark departure from the beginning of the season, when he won the Farmers Insurance Open in dramatic fashion. But somehow, Pavon fired a 3-under 67 on Thursday to begin the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 .

He credits his success to his mindset and the course, which reminded him of some tracks that the DP World Tour plays in Europe.

“New week, new opportunity. You know you’re going to have hard times and better days, and when I came here, I felt like around the greens, it was really something that we’ve seen in Europe.” Pavon said.

Matthieu Pavon, U.S. Open

“You can putt a lot. You don’t have to carry the ball. There is not any thick rough. This is like a ‘linksy’ type of golf course. It looked a little bit familiar, which is probably why I enjoyed being out there today so much.”

No doubt that Pavon enjoyed himself on the par-5 5th and par-5 10th holes. He eagled both of them, flying him up the leaderboard and squarely into contention for the first time in months.

“It’s funny because they pretty much come when you don’t really expect them,” Pavon said of his pair of eagles.

“We know how tough the course can be, and even if you go in two for the par-5s, you really have to put the ball in the right spot, and that is all I tried, and I succeeded. I dropped some very nice putts today, too, so it was really a good day.”

On the 5th hole , Pavon launched his 4-iron from 241 yards out to 17 feet away. He made the putt, which got him to 2-under. A birdie at the par-4 8th followed, and by the time Pavon made the turn, he sat at 3-under.

Stop us if you've heard this before... An eagle on 5, this time from new co-leader @matthieupavon pic.twitter.com/dyNI61kmuh — U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 13, 2024

Then, on the 10th hole, Pavon rifled a 3-wood from 288 out onto the front of the green. His ball came to rest 27 feet from the cup, and he drained that putt, too. Suddenly, he sat at 5-under and in the lead.

But that was short-lived. Pavon bogeyed the 11th and 16th holes, as he slid back to 3-under. He sits two strokes behind Patrick Cantlay midway through Thursday’s first round.

Nevertheless, Pavon leads the field in putting to this point, gaining 4.31 strokes on the greens. If he can keep that up, who knows? Perhaps he can become the first Frenchman to win a major. He has proven himself under pressure before, but now it’s a matter of getting the job done on a challenging golf course with the best players in the world. At least he feels confident that he can do so.

“My game this year is quite good overall. I had a few weeks down, but it happens in a year,” Pavon said.

“When it’s tough like this week, at least you know that sometimes you have to take away some pressure and expectations, play smart to the right spots, and make one or two up-and-downs when you need to. This is what really changed compared to some of the last weeks.”
