Kellie Dawn Pickler (born 28 June 1986) is a contemporary country/pop star from North Carolina. She was introduced to the public’s attention in 2006 as one of the top contenders of American Idol’s 5th season and has since gone on to become a successful touring musician and recording artist.

Pickler was born in Albemarle, North Carolina (a small town outside of Charlotte) and was primarily raised by her grandparents. Pickler was wired for the spotlight from an early age. In high school she was both a cheerleader and beauty queen, but was also a hard worker clocking in hours as a waitress at the Sonic Drive-In. Though her career in the entertainment industry was first geared toward beauty pageants, she shifted to music in 2005 when she auditioned for American idol in 2005.

Her sound was influenced by veteran country divas like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton (whom she cites as her biggest inspirational music source) as well as modern country/pop artists like Sara Evans, Faith Hill, and Carrie Underwood. She excelled on the show, reaching 6th place before being eliminated. Although she was booted from the show she left a significant impression on American Idol viewers and with the popularity she gained from the show she was able to spawn a successful solo career.

In 2006 she picked up a contract with BNA Records and released her first studio album “Small Town Girl”. The album has since been certified gold and featured the four singles “Red High Heels”, “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind”, “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You”, and “I Wonder”. The former of the songs sported a widely heralded music video that was announced as the “Breakthrough Video of the Year” by CMT. Her follow up self-titled album came out in 2008. It featured her first Top Ten hit “Best Days of Your Life”, a song co-written by Taylor Swift. The album went on to take the No. 1 spot on the Country Album charts and No. 9 on the Billboard 200.

Pickler’s 3rd studio album “100 Proof” was released on 24 January 2012. Though the album failed to produce a hit single it did incredibly well on the album charts, appearing at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums and at No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Pickler’s 4th album, “The Woman I Am” came out nearly 2 years later. The 12 track album featured the two singles “Little Bit Gypsy” and “Someone Somewhere Tonight”. The album was a critical breakthrough, scoring an 82 on Metacritic and likewise was also a commercial success entering the US Billboard 200 at No. 19, the US Top Country Albums at No. 4, and the US Independent Albums at No.1.

Live reviews

In a genre of music that has been historically dominated by men, it is no surprise North Carolina singer/songwriter Kellie Pickler found a platform for her own brand of country music through the popular television series American Idol. Despite not making it to the final, she has gone on to enjoy a successful career all on her own merits with four top 5 country albums thus far.

With this level of accolade it is no wonder that Kellie's touring schedule has been pretty unrelenting since she arrived on the circuit in 2006. Having amassed a readymade fanbase from the TV series, she handles the large crowds with ease with her personable manner as she attempts to build a lasting connection with the room as a whole. She also has the bonus of hits including 'Best Days Of Your Life' and 'Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You' to further involve the audience as they sing along in force. She proudly introduces her accompanying musicians and herself for anybody unaware before leading the crowd is one large finale of 'Red High Heels' to round off an enjoyable live show.

Kellie PIckler is a great country singer and even live she has an amazing voice. She definitely gives a solid show, nothing particularly theatrical, it's about the music with Kellie.

She was sassy as she sang Ring for Sale, a he done her wrong kind of song. She had fun singing George Jones song White Lightening. Her voice was stellar singing Someone, Somewhere Tonight and the audience helped sing along to Red High Heels.

Reminds me a bit of Dolly Parton in that way. The venue wasn't too large so the band wasn't overshadowing her and the audience was obnoxiously loud so you could hear well. She is really good at interacting with the crowd and completely willing to sign autographs.

She is a very down to earth girl and I would totally see her again in concert. The band was wearing masks which I didn't really understand and too be honest kind of felt weird and opposing to the country vibe. Aside from that I thought it was a great concert!

Kellie is a great performer. She is very real and true to her feelings. The venue, Campos Winery, was nice, except that the porta-potties were awful, filthy and not serviced during the performance.

Kellie Pickler Returns to Stage 14 Months After Husband's Death for Patsy Cline Tribute: 'He Is Here with Us Tonight'

Kyle Jacobs in February 2023 at age 49

Over year after her husband's death, Kellie Pickler has taken the stage for the first time for a powerful performance.

On Monday, April 22, Pickler, 37, was a part of a star-studded lineup of performers at Walkin' After Midnight: The Music of Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium.

"I'd be lying if I didn't say I was incredibly nervous right now," Pickler said onstage, according Rolling Stone and USA Today . "It's the first time I've been up on stage in a while."

She performed "The Woman I Am," which she wrote with her late husband Kyle Jacobs.

"I know he is here with us tonight," she said.

More performers on the lineup included Sara Evans , Ashley McBryde , Mickey Guyton , Wynonna Judd , Kristin Chenoweth , Rita Wilson , Crystal Gayle , Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo and more.

The event, which celebrated the life and music of Cline — who died in a plane crash in March 1963 at age 30 — also included opening remarks by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden .

Pickler's return to the stage marked her first after Jacobs died by suicide in February 2023 at age 49.

In August, Pickler broke her silence with a statement to PEOPLE and thanked her fans for the continued support.

“One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don’t know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still,'" she said. “I have chosen to heed his advice.”

“Thank you to my family, friends, and supporters, for the countless letters, calls, and messages that you have sent my way,” the country star and radio host continued. “It has truly touched my soul and it’s helping me get through the darkest time in my life. As many of you have told me, you are all in my prayers."

Then, in September, hundreds of people gathered at Franklin First UMC in Franklin, Tennessee to pay their respects to the late musician .

"While this celebration was long in coming, it was necessary for us, his parents, to cope with the shock of his passing, and to work through adjusting to this life without our beloved son. Thus, Kyle’s Celebration of Life was created and presented in a thoughtful and thorough way to best honor how Kyle lived his life," his family wrote in a press release.

The statement continued, "Kyle was a Lover of Life! He loved his family and his friends, and he earnestly showed love and brought joy to countless others he did not even know. Remembrances continue to come to us daily. He was known for his genuine, humble spirit and an ability to touch another person’s life in a moment."

Pickler and Jacobs began dating in 2008 and  wed in a surprise ceremony three years later.

Kellie Dawn Pickler was born on June 28, 1986, in Albemarle, North Carolina to Clyde “Bo” Raymond Pickler, Jr. and Cynthia Morton. Her mother left when Kellie was two years old and she was raised by her grandparents. As a child, Pickler took dance lessons, competed in beauty pageants, and sang at her local church. When she was sixteen, she worked as a waitress at a Sonic Drive-In.

After her elimination from American Idol, Pickler signed a record deal with 19 Recordings and BNA Records. She co-wrote all but four songs for her album Small Town Girl; among them was her debut single, “Red High Heels”. The song was released on September 13, 2006, and debuted at thirty-eight on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It reached a peak of fifteen in early 2007, becoming Pickler’s first top twenty hit single as well as her first to reach number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On September 30, 2008, she released her self-titled album, Kellie Pickler. The album, produced by Chris Lindsey, peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. On its release, it sold almost 43,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting solo album by a female country artist in over two years. The album’s lead-off single, “Best Days of Your Life”, became Pickler’s second top ten hit on the Hot Country Songs chart in 2008.

On January 24, 2012, Pickler released her third album, 100 Proof. The album debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart and at number seven on the Billboard 200, making it her highest-charting solo album to date. The first single from the album, “Tough,” peaked at number 19 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart in 2011.

On November 11, 2013, Pickler released her fourth studio album, The Woman I Am. The album’s lead single, “Little Bit Gypsy”, was co-written by Kyle Jacobs, Tammi Lynn Kidd, and Fred Wilhelm. It debuted at No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart and has sold 34,400 copies in the US as of February 2016.

In 2013, Pickler was a contestant on Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars. She was partnered with professional dancer Derek Hough. The duo made it to the finals and ultimately finished in the first place.

During her time on Dancing with the Stars, Pickler gained popularity for her Southern charm and sense of humor. She endeared herself to fans and became one of the most popular contestants on the show.

Pickler was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was incredibly nervous right now,” she told the crowd right before her performance. “It’s the first time I’ve been up on stage in a while. I will say that I am incredibly honored to be a part of honoring Ms. Patsy Cline. She is a huge reason why I fell in love with music.”

Pickler explained that the song she was going to perform, “The Woman I Am,” was a tune she wrote with her husband “over a decade ago.”

While looking out into the audience, she said the last time she was in the Ryman Auditorium was with him.

“I know he is here with us tonight,” she said.

More performers who took the stage that night were Sara Evans, Ashley McBryde, Mickey Guyton, Wynonna Judd, Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Wilson, Crystal Gayle, Pat Benatar, and Neil Giraldo, per Entertainment Weekly .

On Feb. 17, 2023, Jacobs was found dead at his and Pickler’s home. A spokesperson for the Davidson Country Medical Examiner confirmed to E! News that Jacobs died by suicide.

Jacobs and the  “American Idol” alum  tied the knot in 2011 and starred in their own reality show, “I Love Kellie Pickler,” from 2015 to 2017.

In August 2023, Picker spoke out about her husband's death in a statement to The Tennessean . There, she talked about his memorial service and said it would happen in the fall.

In the statement, Pickler said she is heeding the advice of her late husband, who taught her to “do nothing, just be still,” if you don’t know what to do.

Pickler went on to thank “family, friends, and supporters" for their messages of hope.

“It has truly touched my soul and it’s helping me get through the darkest time in my life. As many of you have told me, you are all in my prayers,” she said.

Pickler's team did not respond to TODAY.com's request for comment.

AOL Build Presents Kellie Pickler and Kyle Jacobs discuss "I Love Kellie Pickler"

In August 2016, the country music power couple appeared on TODAY to promote their reality TV show and said they were “blessed” to be surrounded by such strong support systems and friends.

“We have the freedom to just be us and have fun,” Pickler said at the time.

Jacobs added that it was “just about love and laughter and having fun.”

He also opened up at the time about how doing the reality show had been “tricky” for him because he wasn’t used to being on camera.

“I’m a singer, songwriter, producer back in Nashville. I’m not an on-camera guy. I’m used to being behind the scenes,” he said at the time.

Pickler and her husband collaborated on music but he also was known for working with other stars like Kelly Clarkson and Scotty McCreery.

He penned Kimberly Locke’s “8th World Wonder,” co-wrote Garth Brooks’ “More Than a Memory,” and co-wrote Tim McGraw’s “Still,” among others.

CORRECTION (April 25, 2024, at 1 a.m. ET): An earlier version of this article incorrectly spelled Kellie Pickler as "Picker" in two locations. It has been updated to correctly reflect how the country artist spells as Pickler.

Kellie Pickler grew up immersed in country music in the small town of Albemarle, North Carolina with the words of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton shaping her musical footing. At the age of 19, she gained fame as a contestant on the fifth season of “American Idol.” In 2006, she signed with 19 Recordings/BNA Records and released her debut album, Small Town Girl, which has gone on to sell more than 900,000 copies worldwide and produce three hit singles: “Red High Heels,” “I Wonder,” and “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind.” She followed that in 2008 with her self- titled sophomore record, featuring country radio hits “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful,” “Best Days of Your Life” (co-written with Taylor Swift and her first Top 10), and “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You.” Having established herself as not only a powerful vocalist but also a songwriter, Pickler released her third studio album, 100 Proof, in 2011 to huge critical acclaim. The album was named the No. 1 Country Album of The Year by Rolling Stone and was listed on “Best of 2012” lists by Washington Post, Rhapsody, AOL’s The Boot and more.

In spring of 2013, Pickler partnered with dance coach Derek Hough and won the Mirror Ball Trophy on “Dancing with the Stars.” That same year, she also released her fourth album, The Woman I Am, with Black River Entertainment, which featured three songs co-written by Pickler including the title cut. She voiced the lead character, a sweet potato named Mirabelle, in the Veggie Tales animated movie “Beauty and the Beet” in 2014, and launched her home goods line, “Selma Drye by Kellie Pickler” in cooperation with the Opry Stores ( shop.opry.com ) in 2015. She returned to “American Idol” twice in 2016: in February she mentored two of the Top 24 finalists, and in April she performed on the series finale.

Her CMT docu-comedy series “I Love Kellie Pickler” which co-stars her husband, songwriter/producer Kyle Jacobs, debuted in November 2015, propelling the network to its highest premiere with adults since 2012 and women since 2008. The hit television series returned for a second season in August 2016. The lively and unpredictable Pickler is a television favorite, having made guest appearances on shows such as “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Ellen,” “FOX & Friends,” “Good Morning America,” “Meredith,” “Queen Latifah,” “Rachel Ray,” “The Real,” “Steve Harvey Show,” “Today,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” and more.

Pickler is an avid supporter of the U.S. military, having recently completed eleven USO Tours thus far. For more information, please visit www.kelliepickler.com .

Kellie Pickler Honors Late Husband With First Return To Stage Since His Passing

WATCH: Kellie Pickler Honors Late Husband With First Return To Stage Since His Passing

Kellie Pickler returned to the stage in a moment that was emotional both for audiences and for the singer. Pickler performed at a concert to remember Patsy Cline, but she honored her late husband Kyle Jacobs.

Appearing on stage, the singer seemed nervous. She said, "I'd be lying if I didn't say I was not incredible nervous right now. It's been the first time I've been up on stage in a while."

She opened up about what Cline meant to her and her late husband. She said, "I will say that I am incredibly honored to be a part of honoring Ms. Patsy Cline. She is a huge reason why I fell in love with music. My husband and I actually wrote this song together, gosh, over a decade ago. The last time I was here in the Ryman Auditorium was with him on a date night. And I know he is here with us tonight."

The occasion marked Pickler's first return to stage since her husband's passing. She performed "The Woman I Am," which is a song she wrote with Jacobs. She once opened up about their working and personal relationship.

Kellie Pickler Opens Up About Late Husband

"Yes, it's true, I'm sleeping with my producer!" Pickler once joked about her marriage. She had nothing but praise for Jacobs. "He is so good at what he does," she said . "The music he's produced for Lee Brice is all over the radio! I'm so excited to be in the studio again recording a new album, and working with Kyle has been amazing. He has watched me perform for years, so it was great to have a front row seat as an artist and see him in his element."

Jacobs died from an apparent suicide. Since his death, Pickler has mostly stayed private, but she did take the time to thank everyone for their support.

"One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don't know what to do, 'do nothing, just be still,'" she said. "I have chosen to heed his advice."

"Thank you to my family, friends, and supporters, for the countless letters, calls, and messages that you have sent my way," she continued. "It has truly touched my soul and it's helping me get through the darkest time in my life. As many of you have told me, you are all in my prayers."
