Vietnam's reinvention as Southeast Asia's most exciting tourist destination has long since been complete. Hanoi is the capital, and Ho Chi Minh City- formerly Saigon has French colonial landmarks. After wars for the more significant part of the 20th century, the country is now a hotspot for foodies, beach bums, and thrill-seekers alike. Its capital, Hanoi, has managed to retain its old-style feel despite an economic boom. Its Old Quarter is a riot of delectable food stalls, markets, and labyrinthine streets. Ho Chi Minh City serves up a more modern edge, while the UNESCO-protected town of Hoi An, and has kept its charm despite the swathes of tourists. From Ha Long Bay to the Mekong Delta via the beaches of Da Nang, Vietnam's natural wonders make it truly magical. Population is estimated at 97,338,579 people by 2020.

Language: Quoc Ngu - Latin Alphabet The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, which is the mother tongue of the Vietnamese people, who constitute 86% of Vietnam's population and about three million overseas Vietnamese. And it is the second language of the ethnic minority groups in the country. It is monosyllabic, with each syllable having six different tones that can change the word's meaning. It makes it quite difficult for new learners. Besides the official language, each ethnic minority group has its dialect that has been used and preserved in daily life. The Vietnamese writing system in use today is an adapted version of the Latin alphabet, with additional diacritics for tones and certain letters. The use of accent marks indicates the different tones. This system of writing, called Quoc Ngu, was created by a French Catholic missionary, Fr. Alexander De Rhodes, in the 17th century to translate the scriptures. When France invaded Vietnam in the late 19th century, French gradually replaced Chinese as the official language in education and government. In addition, many Sino-Vietnamese terms Western ideas imported through the French. However, the Romanized script did not predominate until the beginning of the 20th century.

People Vietnam's traditional customs are very multiform and plentiful in each period from the past until now. Each of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam has its distinct custom with many different traditional costumes and liturgies. Stunning Scenery

Even at its thinnest point, just 50 kilometers across, Vietnam dazzles with one breathtaking view after another. Sprawling rice terraces and limestone peaks dominate the North, while mist-shrouded mountains give way to picturesque white sand beaches in the South. From bottom to top, Vietnam packs in more fantastic scenery than any other country in the region.

Cultural Pride

Vietnam today is indescribable without mention of the brutal conflict that took place half a century ago. Never one to be defined by the outside, Vietnam sees itself as anything but “war torn.” Bold, but friendly. Eager, but sincere. As you encounter the locals, you’ll find a proud people, ready for a chance to show you their culture on their own terms.

What Client Say

As a family of four we did a 4 day , 3 night cycling tour around the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh to Chau Doc . It was the highlight of our trip so far largely thanks to our amazing guide Ut and lovely driver Kit, we saw so much that we wouldn’t have been able to any other way, and seeing the people getting ready for Tet was fantastic, although they all took time to shout hello and high five you along the way. The accomodation at the homestay in particular was excellent as was the food, and I have never slept so well. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.

We booked SinhBalo Adventure Travel from home having read the reviews on TA and our party of 4 adults opted for the 2 nights and 3 days cycling and boating around the Mekong Delta. From start to finish the whole trip was very well organised, professional and did exactly what it said on the tin. We were very pleased with the whole experience and trip.

We did the Can Tho / hotel stay bike and boat tour with SinBalo, which was a highlight of our Vietnam Trip. Ut was a fantastic guide, a Mekong Delta local giving us a lot of information and answering our many questions. He and the van driver were good-natured, friendly, professional, and responsible.

We did a 3 day orivate cycking tour with asinhbalo in the Meking Delta. Everything was great: the bikes were very good and well looked after, the driver in the support car was quite good, an waitedmfor us with cold water and nice wet towels at the end of each cycling segment. The guide looked after us in the bits of rozds which were busy without being over-protective.

Understanding Vietnam

Topography — Vietnam is a tropical country in South-East Asia located between the latitudes 8° and 24° N. The country is shaped like a slim, curving scythe, that is a narrow strip in the middle, and broader at either end, resembling Italy in shape. It has a long coastline along the South China Sea, which is a western extension of the Pacific Ocean. Vietnam is mostly hilly, with mountains accounting for over 40% of its land area, and is densely forested, with tropical rainforests covering some 42% of its landmass. Hills, tropical rainforests, and the Pacific coast are thus the dominant topographical features of Vietnam and one should expect them to make up a large part of the cycling experience in Vietnam. The north-eastern end of Vietnam, bordering China, called the Red River Delta is a fertile swathe of flatland that accounts for much of the country’s population and its agricultural productivity. Rice paddies are the dominant topographical feature of this region.

Fauna & Flora — Vietnam is extremely rich in biodiversity and is home to 16% of the world’s species of flora and fauna. Its lush forests are home to a variety of unique species, including clouded leopards, douc langurs, and the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros. The country's extensive coastline supports thriving marine ecosystems, and its wetlands provide habitat for numerous bird species.

Climate — The country has a wet and generally pleasant climate with high levels of precipitation. Proximity to the sea and the presence of mountains have a moderating effect on the climate of most parts of the country despite its nearness to the equator.

Economy — It has a population of close to 100 million people, most of whom enjoy a relatively high standard of living. Agriculture, petroleum extraction, tourism, and of late, the services sector are the primary drivers of its economy. The country is relatively prosperous and is rated as among the fastest-growing economies in the world. Vietnam is recognized as a regional power in South East Asia, and globally, as a middle power in international affairs.

Don't miss a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of underground tunnels used during the Vietnam War.
  • Mekong Delta : Cycling through the Mekong Delta allows you to witness the daily life of locals, floating markets, and scenic waterways. Explore the intricate network of canals, visit fruit orchards, and savor the unique flavors of the region.

The Cambodian capital Phnom Penh is located in close proximity to Saigon and makes for a great cycle tour from Saigon across the mighty Mekong River which is the economic and cultural lifeline of Indochina. The terrain in Southern Vietnam and into Cambodia , unlike the rest of Vietnam, is mostly flat.

These are just a few highlights of the many cycling destinations in Vietnam. Each region offers its own unique charm and cycling opportunities, allowing you to immerse yourself in Vietnam's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local communities.

What are the Best Cycling Routes in Vietnam?

Vietnam offers an array of cycling routes catering to different preferences and skill levels. Here are some popular routes worth exploring:

  • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi Cycling

This classic route covers approximately 1,700 kilometers and takes you through the heart of Vietnam. Starting from Ho Chi Minh City in the south, you'll pass through historic towns, coastal landscapes, and picturesque rural areas before reaching the capital city of Hanoi. The two largest cities in Vietnam are Hanoi located at its northern edge, which is also its capital, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) at its southern tip, which is its most populous city. The ride takes you across the length of Vietnam, skirting its azure pacific coast and through its numerous hills, tropical rainforests, and rice fields, and is a great way to experience the country at close quarters. Ha Long Bay, one of the most recognizable sights in Vietnam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located close to Hanoi. The terrain around Hanoi and northern Vietnam, in general, is hilly and ideal for people who love hills. Southern Vietnam, around Saigon, is flatter and ideal for those who prefer riding on the plains.

  • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Angkor Wat Cycling

This biking route takes you through the Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam, then continues into Cambodia along the South Coast, concluding at the magnificent Angkor. The terrain largely remains flat. Some sections of Cambodia are on gravel roads and on Vietnam side through narrow country roads frequents by locals.

  • Coastal Vietnam Cycling

Cycling along the coast from the ancient city of Hue to the coastal town of Nha Trang is a delightful experience. This route takes you through fishing villages, pristine beaches, and the Hai Van Pass, known for its panoramic views. Don't miss the chance to explore Hoi An's lantern-lit streets and its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town.

  • High in the Northwest Mountains

The journey from Hanoi and ending again at Hanoi is a favorite among cycling enthusiasts. This route combines breathtaking mountain scenery, terraced rice fields, and encounters with ethnic minority communities. Sapa, nestled in the Hoang Lien Son Mountains, offers stunning views and a chance to experience local hill tribe culture.

  • Mekong Delta Cycling

The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is a lush, water-filled region known as the "rice bowl" of the country. Cycling through the delta allows you to witness the daily life of locals, floating markets, and scenic waterways. You can also take boat trips to explore the intricate network of canals and enjoy the region's unique cuisine.

When is the Best Time to Cycle Vietnam?

Choosing the best time to cycle in Vietnam is crucial to ensure favorable weather conditions and an enjoyable experience. Like most tropical regions, Vietnam has hot summers, mild pleasant winters, and an extremely wet rainy season.

Being located in the northern hemisphere, the best season for cycling in Vietnam is generally from September to May, with regional variations as described below:

Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, Sapa, and Ninh Binh, experiences four seasons:

Spring (March to April) : Spring in northern Vietnam is characterized by mild temperatures and blooming flowers. It's an ideal time for cycling, with pleasant weather and colorful landscapes.

Summer (May to August) : The summer months bring hot and humid weather, with occasional rain showers. It can be challenging to cycle in the heat and humidity, but if you're well-prepared and take precautions, it can still be enjoyable.

Autumn (September to November) : Autumn is considered the best time to go cycling in northern Vietnam. The weather is cool and dry, making it comfortable for long rides and exploring the scenic countryside.

Winter (December to February) : Winter in the north can be cold, particularly in mountainous areas like Sapa. While the temperatures may be lower, it can still be a good time for cycling, especially if you're prepared with appropriate clothing.

In summary, cycling is best suited for the northern mountains of Vietnam from late August through May. December and January experience colder temperatures with occasional light showers, so travelers should be well-prepared for these conditions.

Located in northeastern Vietnam, has a distinct weather pattern influenced by its coastal location. Understanding the weather conditions in Halong Bay is essential for planning your cycling adventure in the region. Here's an overview of the weather in Halong Bay throughout the year:

Spring (March to April) : During spring, Halong Bay experiences mild temperatures and relatively stable weather. The average temperature ranges from 20°C (68°F) to 25°C (77°F), making it a pleasant time for cycling. However, occasional rain showers can occur, so it's advisable to carry rain gear and check weather forecasts before setting off on your cycling routes.

Summer (May to August) : The summer months bring warmer temperatures and higher humidity to Halong Bay. Average temperatures range from 25°C (77°F) to 30°C (86°F), with July and August being the hottest months. While cycling during this time is still possible, it's important to stay hydrated, wear lightweight and breathable clothing, and take precautions against the heat and sun exposure. Be aware that summer is also the rainy season, so expect occasional heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.

Autumn (September to November) : Autumn is widely considered the best time to visit Halong Bay. The weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 28°C (82°F). The skies are clearer, and rainfall decreases compared to the summer months. This makes it an ideal time for cycling, as you can enjoy comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. However, it's still a good idea to check weather forecasts as occasional rain showers can occur.

Winter (December to February) : Winter in Halong Bay brings cooler temperatures, particularly in the evenings and early mornings. The average temperatures range from 15°C (59°F) to 20°C (68°F). While it's still possible to go cycling during this time, be prepared with warm clothing, especially if cycling early in the morning or later in the day. Winter also sees a higher chance of foggy conditions, which may affect visibility, particularly on the water. Checking weather conditions and being flexible with your plans are advisable during the winter months.

In summary, cycling in this region is ideal between October and May. December and January can bring cooler temperatures and occasional rain. From May to October, the weather is hot, with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring in August and September.

It's worth noting that Halong Bay can be a popular tourist destination, so the number of visitors may vary depending on the season. Peak tourist seasons, such as summer and holidays, may see more crowds and higher accommodation prices. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn.

Central Vietnam is a narrow crescent-like coastal strip that is at times only 60 km wide. As a result, it experiences coastal weather phenomena such as high rainfall and occasional typhoons during the wet season that runs from September to December.

Central Vietnam, including Hue, Hoi An, and Da Nang, experiences a different climate pattern with two distinct seasons:

Dry Season (February to August) : The dry season in central Vietnam is characterized by sunny and hot weather. It's a great time for coastal cycling, exploring the beautiful beaches, and enjoying water activities. However, be prepared for high temperatures and consider starting your rides early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Rainy Season (September to January) : The rainy season brings frequent showers and occasional typhoons. Cycling during this time can be challenging due to heavy rain and potential road disruptions. It's advisable to check weather forecasts and plan your rides accordingly.

In summary, the most favorable season for cycling in this region spans from January to early September, with an average temperature of approximately 30°C.

Southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons:

Dry Season (December to April) : The dry season in the south is the best time for cycling. The weather is relatively cool and dry, making it comfortable for long rides. However, note that temperatures can still be quite hot, especially in March and April.

Rainy Season (May to November) : The rainy season in the south brings high humidity and frequent rain showers. While cycling is still possible, be prepared for wet roads and sudden downpours. The countryside is lush and vibrant during this time, but it's advisable to check weather conditions and plan your rides accordingly.

In summary, Southern Vietnam is an all-year-round cycling destination thanks to its delightful tropical climate. While April and May can be quite hot, the remainder of the year offers temperatures around 30°C. There's moderate rainfall from May to early November, but it clears up quickly, resulting in cool, lush surroundings. November to February stands out as the prime period for cycling in South Vietnam, with warm weather, clear blue skies, and a gentle ocean breeze coming in from the Pacific.

Enjoying Vietnamese Cuisine

One of the highlights of cycling in Vietnam is indulging in the local cuisine. Vietnamese food is known for its fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and balance. Don't miss out on trying these iconic dishes:

Pho — Vietnam's most famous dish, pho, is a flavorful noodle soup with either beef or chicken, topped with fresh herbs and condiments.

Banh Mi — This delicious Vietnamese sandwich combines French influences with local ingredients. It typically includes a baguette filled with various options like grilled meats, pâté, pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs.

Bun Cha — A Hanoi specialty, bun cha consists of grilled pork served with rice noodles, herbs, and a side of dipping sauce.

Banh Xeo — These savory pancakes are made from rice flour and filled with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and herbs. Wrap them in lettuce leaves and dip them in a tangy sauce for a delightful bite.

Ca Phe — Vietnamese coffee is a must-try. Enjoy a cup of ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk) or ca phe trung (egg coffee) for a unique local experience.

Vietnam Visa Requirements

Residents from several countries have visa exemption status for tourist visits to Vietnam. For a full list of up-to-date visa-exempt countries, see the Vietnam Foreign Affairs website .

The ‘e-visa’ process is newer and more streamlined. You can apply for an e-visa through the government website, then, once approved, simply print it out and present it upon arrival in Vietnam. The additional benefit of the e-visa is that it's valid at land borders, not just airports. The processing time ranges from 2 to 7 working days. We recommend applying 2 weeks in advance to avoid unexpected delays. Read more about tourist e-visas for Vietnam at the Vietnam Immigration portal and apply there.

While applying online for an approval letter, please ensure that you have the following documents:

  • Passport scanned copy : A scanned copy of your passport - front (main) page. It shouldn't be a mobile photo or a photo taken from a laptop. Strictly scanned copy done through a computer scanner.
  • Passport size photo : portrait photo (4*6 size, colored photo, white background, straight looking without glasses). A photo taken from a mobile or laptop may or may not work, so I would strictly advise getting one made through a nearby photo studio (retail shop) that specializes in taking photos for visas.

Here is an excellent resource on Vietnam visas that may be worth looking at.

Vaccines and Medicines

Although there are no specific vaccinations required for Vietnam travel by Vietnamese law other than potentially yellow fever in some instances, you are strongly recommended to meet with a medical provider to determine the vaccinations needed for Vietnam. Your medical provider will give you specifics on which vaccinations for Vietnam you are recommended to have based on your prior vaccinations and other health factors.

Our travelers normally don't do any special vaccination before visiting Vietnam and we also don't recommend any particular vaccine.

Here is an excellent resource for recommended vaccinations for Vietnam that may be worthy to look at.

Currency – The official Vietnamese currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). As of May 2021, One Dollar equals 23112 Dong. The American Dollar may be accepted as a mode of payment in large business establishments, especially in the two major Vietnamese cities, Hanoi & Saigon. In smaller business establishments, smaller towns, and in rural Vietnam, the Dong is preferred. Most ATMs will dispense only Dong. In neighboring Cambodia, ATMs dispense the American Dollar as well. Mastercard/Visa are accepted in large business establishments. You should keep some local currency handy at all times.

Transport – For traveling within Vietnamese cities, there are several options such as the Cyclo ( a three-wheeled bicycle taxi) and the Xe Om, a motorcycle taxi. One can also use taxi cabs to get around. There is a frequent intra-city bus service as well. For traveling between Vietnamese cities, there is frequent bus and rail connectivity. Saigon and Hanoi are connected by air service.

Avoid photographing military establishments or military personnel in Vietnam.

Appliances & Devices - Vietnamese electricity supply voltage is 220V at 50 Hz. Most countries in the world use electricity at 220-240V except North America and Japan where 100-120V is used. You should check the back of your device to see if it is compatible with the voltage before plugging it in. Most hotels in Vietnam use two-pin Type A, Type C, and Type F chargers. If your device has a 3-pin plug, it is advisable to carry an adapter with you.

Mobile Coverage – Vietnam has reliable mobile networks in most regions except the remote mountains. You can use your mobile phone in most Vietnamese cities as long as you have global roaming activated. If you plan to stay longer, you can buy a local Vietnamese SIM card that you can use on unlocked mobile phones. Mobile internet is generally cheap and reliable in Vietnam. Viettel, MobiFone, and Vinaphone are the most popular Vietnamese network operators.

If you are allergic to any of these foods, you might want to inform your tour guide beforehand. Green tea is a popular beverage. Xin chao! Welcome to Vietnam. Your adventure officially begins in Hanoi with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, maybe stretch your legs with a walk around Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter, taking a break along the way for a bia hoi (freshly brewed draught beer). You could also join the queues at the famous Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum or chill out and people watch at Hoan Kiem Lake. After your group meeting, you’ll head out for an included dinner at KOTO restaurant – Vietnam's first social enterprise employing disadvantaged youth.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Hanoi - KOTO dinner
  • Hanoi - One Pillar Pagoda - Free

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, you’ll have some free time to explore the city at your leisure. If you haven’t already, walking through the Old Quarter is really the best way to get a feel for the city – an architectural museum where the ancient '36 Streets’ sell everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, jewellery, embroidered tablecloths, wood carvings and lacquerware. This afternoon, you’ll cycle through the city on a quiet ride around West Lake. Pass by lotus lakes, old school villas and iconic temples including the Tran Quoc Pagoda – the oldest pagoda in Vietnam. Tonight, why not head out for Bahn mi and a local beer – your leader will have the best recommendations!

  • Hanoi - Temple of Literature - VND70000
  • Hanoi - Women's Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Hoa Lo 'Hanoi Hilton' Prison - VND50000

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 22 km (14 mi) with about 40 m (130 ft) of elevation gain.

Due to ongoing negative client concerns about the constant queues (frequently exceeding 3 hours) we will no longer visit the HCM Mausoleum in 2024.

Saddle up this morning as your cycling adventure kicks into first gear. Leave Hanoi behind and travel by bus to Hoa Binh, stopping at Vun Art on the way – a social enterprise run by people living with disabilities, specialising in craft products made from Van Phuc silk. When you arrive in Hoa Binh, you’ll jump on your bike and cycle to Cao Phong through small ethnic Thai villages and paddy fields. As limestone peaks climb in the background, you’ll take regular stops to admire the view across the valleys. When you arrive, take a short bus ride to Man Duc for lunch. Then, the bus will take you to the Da River Reservoir. Cycle along the Da River, passing karst cliffs through paddy fields. The peaceful town of Mai Chau sits in a beautiful valley surrounded by green mountains and is famed for its scenery and friendly hilltribe peoples. Tonight, you’ll enjoy some local hospitality in your simple stilt-house homestay in the village of Poom Coong. After a home cooked meal, there may be a chance to sample some of the local rice wine that’s produced here.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Mai Chau - Pom Coong Village visit & traditional lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours. Your cycling distance today will be approximately 57 km (36 mi) with about 410 m (1090 ft) of elevation gain.

Say farewell to your homestay hosts and cycle from Mai Chau to Mai Hai and on to Co Luong. You’ll ride through more paddy fields, testing your skills (or suspension) with the shallow potholes along the road. Pass farmers drawn by buffalo and wave to the friendly locals as you cycle. Today is all about the lush green fields, limestone mountains and tranquil waterways. Take a bus along the Ho Chi Minh Road and when you arrive in Ninh Binh, you have the option to take another 36 km cycle around the surrounding area. This is a wonderful chance to see the everyday rural life and take in the countryside.

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 49 km (30 mi) on a mostly downhill road with about 195 m (640 ft) of elevation gain.

This morning you’ll cycle from Ninh Binh to Tam Coc to soak up one of Vietnam’s most spectacular views – the limestone karst peaks rising over the rice paddies. Mixed in with the sounds and views of the river, which winds through the fields dotted with boats, you’ll find the true meaning of serene. Cycle to Hoa Lu – once the ancient capital of Vietnam under the 10th century Dinh Dynasty, the temples here were restored in the 17th century and architecture is still in great condition. Here, you’ll take a lunch break at the Dinh or the Le Temple, then it’s back on the bus to return to your hotel. After an early dinner, transfer to Nam Dinh for an overnight train to Hue.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Hoa Lu - Temple of King Dinh and King Le

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 52 km (32 mi) on undulating roads with about 195 m (640 ft) of elevation gain.

On the overnight train to Hue (approximately 12 hours) conditions are basic, but it’s best way to travel long distances like a local. Sleeper trains typically have four berth compartments which have bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. On occasion, passengers of different genders will be required to share a compartment and there will be occasions where you'll be sharing with local travellers or travellers who are not part of your group. Most trains have a dining carriage serving simple food, but most travellers take the opportunity to stock up on fresh bread, cheese and fruit prior to departure.

Arrive in Hue this morning and hop back in the saddle to explore the former imperial capital of Vietnam. Hue holds the treasures of the royal past – a mix of bustling streets and tranquil countryside settings. Ride through the fields to some of Hue's many remarkable sites, including temples, bunkers, tombs, ruins, pagodas and country landscapes. Visit the Imperial Citadel, including the Forbidden Purple City, which was almost totally destroyed during the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive. The foliage-covered ruins and gaping holes left by bombs give an idea of the destruction wreaked upon the country during the war. After, kick back in a cafe or restaurant – Hue’s cuisine is considered by many Vietnamese as the best in the country, influenced both by its imperial heritage (small dishes and a focus on presentation) and its strong Buddhist heritage (reflected in the high proportion of vegetarian restaurants).

  • Hue - Imperial City Full Day Tour
  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 16 km (10 mi) on flat roads with about 12 m (40 ft) of elevation gain.

Leaving Hue, you’ll do some mountainous riding today as you conquer the Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass on the way to the laidback town of Hoi An. This pass is a gorgeous stretch of highway that winds through the Truong Son Mountain Range, with views across the Bay of Danang to the south. It is 500 m above sea level and the up/down slope ranges from 5 to 10 percent. There will be plenty of well-earned breaks along the way to take in the views, snap some photos and rehydrate. When you arrive in Hoi An, you’ll be immersed in the iconic lantern-lit streets, loud markets, tailor shops, artisans, ancient architecture, colourful temples and old school boats lining the river. Recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hoi An is being beautifully restored and preserved, with parts of the town looking exactly like they did more than a century ago. This makes its streets of low tiled buildings perfect for strolling. Take the evening to soak up the atmosphere, or just rest your legs at a local restaurant after a day’s riding.

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 86 km (54 mi) on uphill, flat and downhill roads with about 631 m (2070 ft) of elevation gain.

This morning, head out on a leader-led walking tour through Hoi An. Discover the history of the Chinese influence as you walk past pagodas and assembly halls. Visit a historic house (formerly home to a prominent trader), the Japanese Covered Bridge, a Chinese assembly hall and a museum. The afternoon is free for you to cycle to the beach, head to the tailor shops or find a spot with a view and make the most of happy hour. For those who love to shop, Hoi An is a mecca with much to browse and buy. There are original paintings, leather goods, handcrafted woodwork, ceramics, embroidery, lanterns and lots more.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44
  • Hoi An - Thu Bon river boat trip - VND100000
  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Leave Hoi An behind today and head south down Highway One on the way to Phu. On this lesser-travelled route, you’ll drive past paddy fields, see the wheat drying for the local Hoi Beer and pass locals playing chess. When you arrive, climb back on you bike and cycle to the coastal city of Quy Nhon. The city is filled with long stretches of beach and relaxed boulevards, and it’s a perfect spot to get to know the locals as it’s seldom visited by tourists. Tonight, you’ll have free time to get an authentic slice of coastal life.

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours and your cycling distance will be approximately 44 km (27 mi) on undulating roads with about 255 m (840 ft) of elevation gain.

Today’s cycle is one of the most breathtaking stretches of road you’ll ride on this trip – the highway hugs huge granite cliffs and looks out across the sea. Following parts of the Reunification Railway, you’ll ride alongside spectacular horizons full of islands and lagoons. Join the scooter riders on the waterfront promenade as you arrive in the coastal town of Nha Trang, once referred to as the 'Cannes of the Orient'. The palm-lined beach and island-dotted bay here might just be the best photo op you’ll get! This spot is known for its good weather, vibrant nightlife and excellent diving opportunities.

  • Nha Trang - Po Nagar Cham Tower

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 94 km (59 mi) on lightly undulating roads with about 305 m (990 ft) of elevation gain.

Today you’ll swap your bike for a boat and head out to explore the nearby islands. This excursion is often the highlight of the trip, as you’ll get to know some of the locals and indulge in the beauty of Nah Trang. Starting on the main boat, you’ll then take a small basket boat to shore and visit a fishing village, snorkel in the turquoise waters and feast on a fresh seafood buffet for lunch. Make the most of your free afternoon by lazing in a deck chair, going for another swim or maybe taking a mud bath to soothe away your sore muscles.

  • Hon Mun Island - Snorkelling
  • Nha Trang - Basket boat ride
  • Nha Trang - Boat trip
  • Nha Trang - Bao Dai Villa - VND120000
  • Nha Trang - Mud baths - VND280000

Head up through the Bidoup-Nui Ba Pass into the cooler climate of the South-Central Highlands, where some of the country's best fruits, flowers and coffee beans are grown. The road here is winding and steep but if you're fit and ready for a challenge, you may want to conquer the whole mountain on your bike. You can also take it easy and flag a lift from the bus. Whichever way you choose to get to the top, you'll still be treated to magnificent views when you reach the summit. After a short photo stop here, you’ll descend to Dalat – a perfect base to explore the region, Dalat is often called the 'City of Eternal Spring' for its temperate climate and landscape full of lakes, palaces, pine tree-covered hills, flower gardens and pagodas.

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 72 km (4 mi) on lightly undulating roads with about 270 m (890 ft) of elevation gain.

This morning you’ll take a city tour of Dalat, making the journey to Bao Dai's striking regal summer palace. He was the final emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, and the last to rule Vietnam until 1945. You’ll then discover the wacky and weird architecture of Hang Nga Crazy House. Echoing Gaudi's unconventional designs, this place is described as a 'fairytale house' and you’ll explore the twisted tree roots, cave shaped hallways and animal themed rooms with your group. Drop by the train station and the central market before continuing to Di Linh, where the tea industry looms in the surrounding hills. After lunch, pedal down the forest-lined Gia Bac Pass, then cycle from Malam to Phan Thiets beaches.

  • Dalat - Hang Nga Crazy House

Your cycling distance today will be approximately 67 km (42 mi) mostly downhill, with about 105 m (380 ft) of elevation gain.

Before heading to the big city, you’ll spend your last morning taking in the views along the beach on a ride to Lang Long. After a picnic lunch, keep cycling to Cu Bi where you’ll say goodbye to your two-wheeled friend. Hop in your group’s minivan for the final leg to Ho Chi Minh City and discover the fascinating blend of old and new here as East meets West. North Vietnam: A picture-perfect region

North Vietnam is an adventurer’s paradise: Explore the magnificent mountainous inland, the lively capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, and the spectacular Ha Long Bay rocks.

Ha Long Bay, with its 2,000 islands and striking limestone formations, is one of the most spectacular sights in Vietnam. The sinking limestone plateau, with its rich vegetation and biodiversity, was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1994. The name of the bay means “The Descending Dragon”. According to legend, the bay was created when a dragon carved deep furrows in the land with its tail, which was then filled with seawater.

The best way to admire this mythological landscape is on board a traditional junk. On our Islandhopping tour, you will also have the opportunity to take a guided kayak tour to explore lagoons, beaches, and caves hidden amongst these limestone giants. The area northeast of Ha Long Bay belongs to Bai Tu Long National Park, which has a bay of the same name, just as beautiful as its famous neighbour.

One of the best places to visit in Vietnam is the vibrant capital of Hanoi with its labyrinthine style alleys and colourful houses. This city is a mix of old and new, the traditional and the modern. A walk through the night market is one of the top 10 things to do in the city. Its beautiful colours, scents, and tastes make a holiday in Vietnam a feast for the senses!

Central Vietnam: Rich in culture and history

Central Vietnam is one of the most exciting regions on our tour through the country. The region is considered the cultural centre of Vietnam, not in the least because of the old imperial city of Hue, easily one of the top 10 places to visit in Vietnam. The former capital was the main residence of the emperors between 1802 and 1945. The citadel with its forbidden city still bears witness to the splendour of the time. There were more than 10,000 people living within the high walls of the palace who cared for the well-being of the imperial family. Next to the palace are the historically significant Imperial Tombs and the world-famous Thien Mu Pagoda (the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady), which was built seven storeys high. The cuisine in Hue is also considered one of the best in the country.

120 kilometers further south you can find the picturesque town Hoi An. The city impresses with its striking French and Chinese architecture and has a wealth of tailor shops where every traveller is sure to find something. Cyclists visiting the city also have a special treat to look forward to: The riverside path along the Thu Bon River is considered one of the most beautiful cycling tours in the country and a must do for any biker visiting the area.

Mekong Delta: The rice bowl of Vietnam

The Mekong Delta is often called the lifeline of Vietnam. In this region with its tropical climate, numerous canals wind through the mangrove swamps and rice fields. This precious water influences every aspect of life here: Houses on stilts, rice mills, people washing laundry, heavily loaded boats, waving children, and snorting water buffaloes line the banks. Watching this go by onboard a boat is a special experience and arguably one of the best things to do in Vietnam. At walking pace, we will pass by lavish nature, presenting itself in a rush of colour and fragrant fruit.

This is then contrasted with the bustling areas along the river such as the floating market of Cai Rang or the lively metropolis Can Tho, the so-called little Venice of Vietnam. For cyclists, the many islands in the middle of the delta offer ideal conditions for varied cycling tours: Shady paths, little traffic, and numerous bridges make these bike routes a relaxing pleasure.

Ho Chi Minh City, north of the Mekong Delta, should not be missed on a tour through Vietnam. As Vietnam’s largest city, there are plenty of things to do here, with numerous historical and cultural attractions on offer.

Since our groups never have more than 10 travelers, we stay in small, authentic accommodations that can’t take large tour groups. MTB Vietnam offers basic amenities and simple comforts with an emphasis on the character of your destination because it depends on the place you are staying in each destination, home-stay or small hotels. But actually, the hotels in our programs are 2-3 star ones with standard and deluxe rooms with wifi and warm shower. If you choose a basic tour, you will share in a twin-room.

The cost you pay for your trip includes everything related to your tour which we mention in each specific tour on our MTBVietnam.Com webpage!

We have designed a range of tours to suit every kind of cyclist from off road mountain biking in Vietnam and cycling in Laos. All level can join our cycling trips!

Vietnam is a long country with several distinct climatic zones. The best time to take our bike tour is December – March, which is the Vietnamese winter. November is also a good time although you might strike the end of the monsoon season and have one or two wet days.

In the Far North of Vietnam, March – May or October – December are the best times to visit (January and February, which are the height of winter, can be too cold).

The winds from January on will mostly come from the north, so it is best to bike from the north to the south. The wind is not so strong in November/December.

We strongly recommend you take out travel, accident, medical, baggage and cancellation insurance. Medical Evacuation insurance is compulsory in Vietnam and India.

For New Zealand, you can purchase travel insurance from Southern Cross Travel Insurance.

For Australia, you can compare travel insurance policies.

For Vietnam, check your medical policy to see if Medivac type air transport is included in your policy (or Aflac type supplemental policy) first. If not you can buy medical insurance only at Access America or CSA Travel Protection.

A full cancellation policy is the only way to cover yourself for any problem that may happen before the trip.

Day 1: Saigon & the Mekong Delta

This morning we transfer south from Saigon to the bustling river town of Cai Be. Today’s cycling takes us past endless green rice fields, farms and villages, connected by the gentle pathways of the Mekong Delta. We’ll visit a traditional Cao Dai temple, sample locally grown dragon fruit and Durian, and by late afternoon arrive in the bustling port city of Can Tho for the first of two nights.

Relax this evening onboard a boutique sampan, enjoying dinner and drinks as we cruise at sunset.

Day 2: Explore the Mekong Delta

Our day starts from the hotel, we’ll pedal off to the nearby ferry that crosses the Mekong for our last day of cycling and Delta adventures. This region features many sites constructed during Khmer rule of the Delta and today nearly 1.5 million people of Cambodian descent still call this area home. We’ll pedal the lush Delta area and hop on some islands before another delicious lunch at the local home. Once we’ve eaten, it’s time to board the boat for a 1h15 min transfer back to Can Tho. Arriving in the afternoon to enjoy your hotel.

Day 3: Flight to Da Nang & Hue

We’ll be up early to visit one of the last authentic floating markets in Vietnam, here in Can Tho. The time between breakfast and lunch is free to explore at your leisure to allow time to wander or relax before our flight to Da Nang and transfer to Hue where we will be spending two nights.

This evening enjoy the comfort and serenity of our leafy resort on the outskirts of Hue.

Day 4: Hue Highlights

Our cycling route today reveals ancient, historic Hue. We’ll bike Hue’s Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient kingdoms held sway. The scale of the complex is stunning, even allowing that large sections were destroyed during the American war. Hue was perfectly situated to be the cultural and political heart of Vietnam and reveals both traditional and French colonial influences. Onward to Thien Mu Pagoda, a seven-story structure overlooking the Perfume River. From here we’ll journey by boat along the river, continuing our cycling after lunch. We will then pedal on to nearby sacred tombs of former emperors, geographically in the center of this long narrow country, the nearby countryside affords scenic routes past perfectly tended small farms and rice fields.

Tonight a local family welcomes us for dinner to learn secrets of Hue’s cuisine and share stories with hosts.

Day 5: Hue to Hoi An via Hai Van Pass

Get a good stretch this morning! We transfer out of Hue to the starting point of our ride, up and over Vietnam’s iconic Hai Van Pass. This 21 kilometer stretch of road features 10 kilometers of steady, achievable climbing as it traverses the Truong Son mountain range, providing spectacular views of the coast down below.

Safely over the pass we cycle towards DaNang for a fresh seafood lunch before transferring to Hoi An. On arrival in Hoi An we’ll check in to our hotel then take to the streets for a walking tour of the Old Town including some hidden spots as well as some delicious local snacks followed by a delicious dinner with specialties of Hoi An. Tonight is the first of 3 nights in the historic center of Hoi An.

Day 6: Cycle to My Son

Cycling from the hotel across the river, you will be passing traditional villages, farms and rice fields on the way to the ruins of My Son, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Built by the Cham people, a kingdom eventually conquered by the Vietnamese and Khmer, the ruins remain in decent shape, though covered in moss.

Returning to Hoi An by van transfer, we’ll meet students and artisans from Reaching Out Vietnam, a social enterprise that provides opportunities for people with disabilities to learn skills and gain meaningful employment, helping them lead independent and fulfilling lives.

This evening you’re free to enjoy dinner on your own in Hoi An where the restaurant offerings are endless and your guides can happily help with suggestions.

Day 7: Kayaking, Cooking, & Evening Farewell Dinner

It’s a short walk from the hotel to the dock where our kayaks are tied up. We’ll paddle downstream along the Tu Bon River towards the sea, passing Hoi An’s waterfront and the edge of a mangrove forest. It’s 1.5 hours to the Red Bridge Cooking School where we will leave our kayaks to join one of their award winning cooking classes, which includes lunch, before transferring back to the hotel.

Late afternoon we have a short transfer to Tra Que, the town’s highly rated organic vegetable farm village. Our local hosts show us their farming techniques and prepare a signature dish for our group. A farewell dinner awaits to conclude your Vietnam adventure to a delicious meal.

Day 8: Hoi An Coffee Experience

An early breakfast allows time to walk to our favorite Vietnamese coffee emporium, owned by one of Vietnam’s most decorated coffee roasters. Our private coffee tasting offers a sample of both traditional and contemporary styles. You will have the chance to experience making Vietnamese egg & filter coffee.

We will get back to the hotel in plenty of time for final packing or strolling the Old Quarter. Transfers to DaNang airport are available throughout the day.

How to Plan a First Vietnam Tour

V ietnam is a stunning nation in Southeast Asia and rich in culture and natural beauty. Every kind of tourist may find something to enjoy in Vietnam, from the vibrant capitals of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the serene countryside and beautiful coastline. It might be difficult to choose where to go and what to do if you're organizing your first trip to Vietnam. This article, My Way Travel will provide a detailed overview of how to plan a first Vietnam tour, including advice on setting a budget, creating an itinerary, understanding local customs, and more. Your trip to Vietnam may be a life-changing event with proper planning and preparation, one you will remember and value for years.

Step 1: Set a time limit for your journey

Choosing the length of your trip is the first step in organizing your Vietnam vacation. Considering how big and diverse Vietnam is, knowing exactly how long you want to spend it is crucial. Itineraries for first-timers typically last 10 to 14 days. However, you may modify your Vietnam Tour itineraries according to your tastes and time limits.

Step 2: Choose the Vietnam Tour destinations you want to visit

Researching and choosing the most alluring destinations among Vietnam's breathtaking locales is crucial. You may ask Vietnam to take you to places like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Halong Bay , Sapa, Hoi An, Hue, Phu Quoc, and Da Nang, among other well-known destinations. Prioritizing the places you are most interested in seeing is essential since each place has a certain attraction and charm.

Step 3: Determine your budget

After selecting the duration of your trip and the places you wish to see, choose your budget. Vietnam is an inexpensive destination where you may easily discover affordable food, housing, and transportation options. However, setting a sensible budget guarantees you can enjoy your vacation without financial trouble.

Step 4: Book your flights and accommodation

The next stage in organizing your Vietnam trip is making travel and lodging reservations. Most major cities in the globe have flights to Vietnam, and several internet travel services provide cheap airline alternatives. Vietnam offers a variety of lodging choices, including inexpensive hostels, moderately priced hotels, and opulent resorts. To guarantee that you have a pleasant place to stay during your vacation, you must make hotel reservations in advance.

Step 5: Plan your Vietnam tour itinerary

Plan your itinerary now that you have your flights and lodging secured. Consider your travel alternatives, the time you want to spend in each location, and the distance between your locations when creating your itinerary. Planning for some leisure throughout your vacation to rest and unwind is crucial.

Step 6: Pack smartly

Packaging for your Vietnam vacation might be challenging, but doing so will help ensure you have everything you need. Pack clothes appropriate for the season after considering the local temperature and environment. It's also a good idea to bring any necessary medications, comfy shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent.

Step 7: Learn some basic Vietnamese phrases

While English is often spoken in tourist regions, Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam. Thus, it's always beneficial to learn some fundamental Vietnamese phrases. Learning a few words and phrases, such as “hello,” “thank you,” and “how much does it cost?” might improve your vacation.

Step 8: Be mindful of cultural differences

While visiting Vietnam, it's crucial to remember that the country has a rich cultural heritage. While Vietnamese are kind and inviting, respecting their traditions and customs is crucial. For instance, it's necessary to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering temples or pagodas.

Step 9: Try the local cuisine

Vietnamese cuisine is renowned for being delectable, making it a must-do activity on every trip there. Vietnamese cuisine is varied and contains elements from China, France, and other nearby nations. Pho (noodle soup), banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake), egg coffee, and fresh seafood are some of the must-try meals. Be daring, experiment with various foods, and don't skip street food!

Step 10: Stay safe and healthy

Traveling anywhere, especially Vietnam, demands cautious thought for your safety and well-being. While one of the safest destinations in the world for visitors is Vietnam, it never hurts to be ready. To avoid being unwell from drinking tap water:

  • Consume bottled or boiled water.
  • For sun and mosquito protection, apply sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Watch for approaching traffic, especially in populated cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Step 11: Experience the Vietnam local culture

A trip to Vietnam must include seeing the local culture since the nation has a rich cultural heritage. Visit the Imperial Castle of Hue, take in a traditional water puppet play in Hanoi, or wander around Hoi An's historic district. Learn how to prepare traditional Vietnamese delicacies by taking a cooking lesson or experiencing rural life by going on a bike trip.

Step 12: Shop for Vietnam souvenirs

A wonderful way to remember your trip to Vietnam is to go souvenir shopping. Vietnamese handicrafts, silk items, lacquerware, handicrafts, and traditional clothes like the ao dai are just a few of the country's many distinctive mementos. If you're looking for souvenirs, the local markets are a terrific location but be ready to haggle for the best deal.

Step 13: Leave a positive impact

It's crucial to have a good influence on the locations you visit as a responsible tourist. By avoiding littering and by supporting eco-friendly projects, you can respect the environment. By utilizing local services and purchasing local goods, you can help the neighborhood economy. Ask for permission before photographing individuals or religious locations to show respect for the local culture and traditions.

In conclusion, organizing a first-time trip to Vietnam might be difficult, but with careful planning and preparation, it can be a memorable adventure. Choose your destinations, set a budget, book your flights and lodging, make an itinerary, pack wisely, learn some basic Vietnamese phrases, be aware of cultural differences, try the local cuisine, stay safe and healthy, experience the local culture, browse the local markets, and make a positive impact. These methods will help you have a fun, secure, and culturally enlightening trip to Vietnam.

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

  • Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences.
  • Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
  • Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Insider Today

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Related stories

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."
