Record Year for Cruise Activity at CFPA

Photo courtesy Fifth Ring Integrated Corporate Communications

A record number of cruise passengers visiting Invergordon has led to a boost in excess of $11.1m to the Highland economy for this year. This cruise season, which started in May has seen 46 cruise liners calling at Invergordon, bringing a total of 48,787 passengers to the area. This compares to the 48,098 passengers last year and 52 cruise liners visiting the Port. And with an expected 48 cruise liners visiting Invergordon in 2010, early indications for next year suggest a 20% increase in passenger numbers and gross tonnage.

Our Captain did an excellent job in sometimes difficult conditions with regards to the weather. The crew were always helpful and seemed to have everything under control. Our steward was charming and very hard working and does a great job in the table settings. Everyone enjoyed Chef’s food, he was also very diligent with food allergies which we so appreciated. Everyone was extremely warm, friendly and helpful. The vessel was great! Both inside and out with good windows upstairs and very elegant decor. We found our cabin incredibly comfortable with lots of space for clothing etc. We both very much enjoyed the holiday with the highlight being St Kilda as well as the other guests and crew.

cruise highlands ltd

Captain was highly committed to getting us to St Kilda. The crew as well as having high regard for our safety also spent a lot of time pointing out various places and the wildlife. This was all topped off of course with the high quality of meals and vert well balanced. The overall areas within the boat were of very good quality with ample space, we would recommend this trip to our friends.

Communication

Mobile phones are in range for most of the voyage(s), but please note some blind spots do exist, particularly in the remote lochs and islands. Mobile phones should be switched off in public rooms. Wi-Fi access is available.

Cruzeiro perfeito

Voyage around Scotland's Highlands and Islands with James Crawford

cruise highlands ltd

The wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands is hard to beat. This is a region home to incredible wildlife, pristine white-sand beaches and rugged landscapes dotted with incredible feats of engineering, like the Glenfinnan Viaduct, with its 21 arches, and the majestic 60-mile Caledonian Canal.

On this memorable seven-night cruise on board the small ship Lord of the Glens, you'll explore the best of these enchanting islands and mountains.

Historian and Broadcaster James Crawford will join you for part of the cruise on board Lord of the Glens, where he'll host a talk and answer some of your questions as well as joining you on an excursion.

The cruise starts with a journey along the Caledonian Canal, where you'll pass through the spectacular eight interconnected locks of Neptune's Staircase, descending to sea level to sail around some of Scotland's best-loved isles, including Mull and Skye.

There are several carefully chosen excursions to look forward to, which will introduce you to important Scottish landmarks, including the ancient stones of Clava Cairns, Culloden, the Roman-inspired McCaig's Tower, and the 13th-century Eilean Donan Castle. There's even a chance to have a wee dram at the most remote pub on mainland Britain, The Old Forge Inn.

There'll be plenty of time to relax on your ship too, enjoying the superb restaurant, elegant bar, and watching the ever-changing scenery through huge panoramic windows. Today you'll make your own way to Inverness, where a coach transfer will pick you up from Inverness Airport or the pick up point (Kings Mill Hotel) and transport you to Lord of the Glens, your home for the next seven days.

The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to get to know this wonderful ship, perhaps enjoying a drink before dinner in the stylish bar with panoramic windows.

This morning you'll visit Culloden, the infamous battlefield where "Bonnie" Prince Charlie's Jacobite forces were defeated in 1746, and then see the ancient standing stones of Clava Cairns.

You'll set sail this afternoon on the Caledonian Canal, built between 1803 and 1822 to connect Loch Ness with the Great Glen's three other lochs before entering Loch Ness and cruising past the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle.

You'll then ascend an impressive flight of locks that runs through the heart of Fort Augustus, where you'll moor this evening.

Today you'll sail through the tree-lined section of the Caledonian Canal known as Laggan Avenue and into Loch Lochy. You'll continue to descend Neptune's Staircase, a set of eight interconnected locks, to the village of Corpach, from where you'll enjoy outstanding views of Ben Nevis, Great Britain's highest mountain.

In the afternoon you'll travel by coach to beautiful Glenfinnan where you'll have the opportunity to learn more on the renowned Glenfinnan Viaduct, towering over the waters of Loch Shiel, which found fame in the Harry Potter films.

On your way back to the ship in Corpach, keep an eye out for the West Highland Railway steam train passing through the station next to where Lord of the Glens is docked.

Today you'll pass mysterious lochs and islands on the way to beautiful Oban, the seafood capital of the Highlands. Once here, you can join a walk up to McCaig's Tower which dominates the skyline of this town and offers spectacular views over the Western Isles.

This morning you'll sail to Craignure for an excursion to the Isle of Iona, with a pause in front of Duart Castle for photographs.

Iona is the last resting place of some 50 Scottish Kings and where St. Columba introduced Christianity to Britain. Later you'll sail to Tobermory, again on the Isle of Mull. Tobermory's most striking feature is the brightly painted houses lining the harbourfront. These houses were originally built by the British Fisheries Company to house its workers.

This morning you'll set sail northwards from Tobermory, passing the Small Isle of Eigg as you go and catching glimpses of the islands of the Inner Hebrides along the way.

Today's cruising will allow you to spot marine animals and birdlife, including Atlantic seals, minke whales, dolphins, porpoises and a variety of seabirds.

Lateron, you'll arrive at Inverie on Loch Nevis, where you can enjoy a drink at the most remote pub on mainland Britain, The Old Forge Inn, before turning in for the night.

Early this morning you'll sail across the Sound of Sleat to Armadale and the Isle of Skye where there' a visit to the Clan Donald Centre to look forward to, where you'll learn about the history of the area.

Later on, you'll sail to Kyle of Lochalsh and visit the fascinating Eilean Donan Castle, a fully restored 13th-castle on an island.

In the evening, back on board Lord of the Glens, you'll enjoy a wonderful Farewell Dinner before the trip draws to a close.

Disembark in Kyle of Lochalsh after breakfast for the onward transfer to Inverness.

A single restaurant serves freshly prepared dishes by a loyal brigade of chefs, drawing on the rich bounty of local produce. The aft area is reserved for the Bar, a comfortable, relaxing place, and a stern-facing viewing deck.

“Lord Of The Highlands”: Passenger Ferry Converted Into Luxury Cruise Ship By Oliver Design Sets Sail For Final Destination In Scotland

August 22, 2021

Tags: Hebridean Island Cruises

For many reasons, this is a very special cruise ship; not so much for its dimensions –it is just 45 metres in length– or its luxurious design and finish, but for the extraordinary circumstances that have surrounded the operation to convert a modest passenger ferry operating between two Mediterranean ports into a luxury floating hotel that will travel Scotland’s lochs, islands and canals.

The venture has been nothing short of a nautical metamorphosis, testing not only OLIVER DESIGN’s expertise in undertaking radical redesign and remodelling of the ship, but also the firm’s ability to successfully overcome the unforeseen in the shape of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

In March 2020, having already put 16 months’ work into complete reform of the ship, the Spanish firm found itself facing an entirely unexpected setback. At the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, in light of the grim prospects facing the cruise industry, the British shipowner that had first commissioned the work pulled out of the deal and refused to accept handover of the vessel.

OLIVER DESIGN –based in the Spanish port of Getxo (Biscay)– specialises in naval design and architecture. However it found itself in uncharted waters when it was obliged to take ownership of the ship as payment for its services. Management had to embark on the difficult task of finding a buyer among tour operators from around the world – just at a time when all cruises had been suspended because of the health scare.

After negotiations with a number of Spanish, Greek, American and Australian shipowners, OLIVER DESIGN finally managed to agree sale of the “Lord of the Highlands” to an operator that plans to use it for exactly the same purpose for which it was originally remodelled: short-stay trips through the lochs of the Scottish Highlands and Orkney Islands. The cruise ship is now about to leave Vigo –where alteration work was carried out– for its final destination.

The new owner of the ship is Hebridean Island Cruises Ltd , based in Skipton (Yorkshire, Northern England) which specialises in luxury cruises. To date, the operator’s main asset has been the “Hebridean Princess” , another medium-sized vessel used for exploring Scotland’s Western Isles.

Last August, Hebridean announced that it had bought the “Lord of the Glens” , a very similar vessel to the “Lord of the Highlands” from Magna Carta Steamship Co Limited, the same shipowner that commissioned the latest project.

From Turkey to Scotland by way of Spain

The extraordinary odyssey of the “Lord of the Highlands” first began in 2012, when Turkish shipyard Medyilmaz completed construction of a small 400-seater ferry, the “Necdet Ali Yildirim” , designed to service a short eight-mile passage between the Turkish port of Çesme and the Greek island of Chios. Under the guiding hand of OLIVER DESIGN, this unassuming ship, devoid of any form of luxury, underwent a radical transformation. The operation is not without precedent; 20 years ago, the Spanish architect completed a similar project for the same client, the London-based Magna Carta Steamship Company.

On that occasion too, the work involved completely remodelling an Aegean ferry to create the “Lord of the Glens” , a small cruise ship catering to the Scottish tourist market. That vessel was very similar in size to the “Lord of the Highlands” ; 46 metres in length and 10 in the beam, it has four decks and capacity for 54 passengers and 20 crew. As well as completing the initial radical conversion, OLIVER DESIGN subsequently carried out an extensive refurbishment and upgrade on the vessel in 2015.

The “Lord of the Glens” allowed Magna Carta to offer a unique tourist experience: a cruise from North Sea port Inverness –often considered the capital of the Highlands– to Scotland’s west coast and the Hebrides (Mull, Iona and Skye), by way of the legendary Loch Ness. The journey takes in the Caledonian Canal, a historical feat of engineering which is about to celebrate its 200th anniversary.

The canal links the two seas across a narrow strip of land, barely 30 kilometres wide, allowing vessels to ascend the 32 metres from the sea to the three large lakes. Opened in 1822, the 29 locks are only large enough to accommodate small private recreational vessels. Magna Carta had the idea of creating a tidily-sized “floating hotel” , offering a unique tourist experience.

Due to the limited capacity on board –the ship can take just 50 passengers– this is a truly exclusive cruise.

The originality of the project guaranteed its popularity and given the limited number of places, waiting lists for places on the “Lord of the Glens” stretched to two years. To meet this demand, the operator decided to double its capacity by adding a second ship to its fleet, the new “Lord of the Highlands” .

The turnkey project—designed, directed and supervised by OLIVER DESIGN—required exceptional architectural work, particularly in the passengers’ quarters. It also presented a twin challenge, partly due to the technical complexity of the work (which included resizing the hull), and partly because of the meticulous interior finish required of a top-class cruise ship. In many ways, the project might be likened to turning a city bus into an ultra-sophisticated motorhome.

As chance would have it, the longest and most complicated voyages the vessel will ever have to make are the two trips taking it from its original destination to its new home via the northwest coast of Spain. After seven years in service between two Aegean islands barely eight miles apart, the “Necdet Ali Yildirim” had to complete a voyage of 2,500 nautical miles to Vigo where it underwent remodelling. Now, the renamed “Lord of the Highlands” will have to sail around 1,300 miles to its new base in Inverness, from where it will cover runs of no more than 200 nautical miles on a variety of routes.

Larger hull, extra deck and new interiors

To meet the requirements of the new “Lord of the Highlands” , it has been necessary to enlarge the vessel, adding 3 metres to its length and 1 to the beam, as well as inserting extra ballast into the keel to provide greater stability and compensate for the extra deck. The propulsion systems have been completely revamped, with two new main 250 kW generators, automated switchboards and new navigation equipment and lifesaving gear.

The vessel has also been fitted with a wastewater treatment plant and oil/water separator to prevent discharges of marine oil.

Automatic sliding doors have been installed in the sealed compartments in the hull. The vessel previously flew under a Turkish flag and so it has also had to be adapted to meet more demanding EU shipping regulations. The interiors have been completely redistributed. The original vessel had two large lounges, completely taken up with seats for the 700 passengers. This area has now been converted into twenty-two magnificent cabins, a spacious lounge bar and a restaurant. Other additions include the crew’s quarters, galley and ship’s store.

The bridge has also been adapted to suit the vessel’s new mission. With the new configuration, the ship is now 45 metres in length, 10 in the beam and has a GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) of 737 tonnes.

Other distinguishing features of the new “Lord of the Highlands” include the interior decor and services. Design of the state rooms takes its inspiration from the luxury train carriages of yore, with fine hardwood overlays, high quality upholstery in classic patterns, and carefully selected furniture, lighting features and accessories. All cabins have a full en-suite bathroom and individual climate control (adapted to the rigours of the Scottish weather!), thermal insulation and soundproofing, as well as a phone connection and satellite TV unit.

One of the challenges of redesigning and outfitting the “Lord of the Highlands” has been to provide the levels of comfort passengers expect of such high-quality accommodation, while at the same time meeting the strict safety standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In order to comply with requirements on the use of fireproof materials, the different areas have been sectioned off by means of sandwich panels with mineral wool insulation.

Layout of the different areas on the four decks The new “Lord of the Highlands” is an elegant four-deck cruise ship:

– Lower deck: as well as the engine room and other ancillary spaces (laundry, water tanks, wastewater treatment, fuel tank), this deck also houses five crew cabins. – Main deck: includes a suite at the bow and another seven twin-berthed cabins, four of which have direct access to an outside balcony. At the rear are the galley (with an elevator to the restaurant service area), the crew’s mess, as well as on-deck emergency and life-saving equipment. – Bridge Deck: with the bridge to the fore, this deck also houses the captain’s cabin and another thirteen twin-berthed passenger cabins. – Upper deck: the large picture window in the restaurant and lounge bar, together with an outdoor bow balcony, make this an ideal viewing point for passengers.

The three passenger decks are all named for the classic spy novel “The 39 Steps” , set in Scotland and the basis of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 thriller. The main deck is called the John Buchan (after the author of the book); the bridge deck is the Richard Hannay (the hero of the story); and the upper deck is the Tweedsmuir (the peerage awarded to Buchan by King George V).

Work undertaken by OLIVER DESIGN and its collaborators and subcontractors

As well as the exterior design, architectural planning of interiors and coordination of the entire turnkey project, OLIVER DESIGN invested around 10,500 hours’ work in outfitting the “Lord of the Highlands” with up to twenty operators working simultaneously on the ship at peak periods. It also led a select group of specialist firms from different fields, most based in and around Vigo, where the conversion work was carried out:

• Insenaval took charge of technical engineering (structure, main systems and stability). • Talleres Gestido was responsible for the steel work, aluminium superstructure, piping and a range of navigation elements. • Astilleros Armada, as well as providing docking space for the vessel at its shipyard, also took charge of metal plating, painting and other tasks related to the hull, overhauling rudders, shafts and propellers and various other items. • Solem fitted the electrical installation, including the new switchboards required by the alterations. • Protecnavi fitted sanitary and fire protection pipes and climate control ducts. • Carpinautic manufactured and installed the interior furniture. • Bureau Veritas reviewed the drawings and performed the site inspection.

Dior takes on the kilt and celebrates Scotland for Cruise 2025

Maria Grazia Chiuri brought the fashion pack to Edinburgh for an unforgettable show

It has now become customary for Dior to celebrate craftspeople with each and every collection it presents, but this is particularly the case when it comes to its cruise shows – and this year was no different, as Maria Grazia Chiuri journeyed to Edinburgh, where she teamed up with local fashion brands and designers, and celebrated the historic connection between Scotland and France.

"In the past 10 years we speak only of the 'brand' when it comes to fashion, but I want to show what is behind the brand – the factories, the knowledge," Grazia Chiuri said backstage ahead of the show. "Everything isn’t done in Paris or Milan, it’s a global industry. So when we speak about fashion, we forget how much we’re connected. To work together is an opportunity to explore different ways of doing things."

dior cruise 2025

The designer has made huge efforts to draw attention to the people behind the fashion houses, and has collaborated with countless craftspeople, designers and organisations over the past few years. For Cruise 2025, the team worked with Samantha McCoach and her brand Le Kilt to design pieces for the collection, while they also teamed up with Harris Tweed, Johnstons of Elgin, ESK Cashmere and Robert Mackie, who brought their local expertise into the designs.

Much of the collection was, of course, inspired by Scottish fashion and history, from the tartan to the chainmail. This included Dior's take on the kilt, which Grazia Chiuri said was a "big responsibility" to take on. "The kilt is part of Scottish tradition but also the punk moment in fashion – Westwood and McQueen worked with this before me so it was a big responsibility."

dior cruise 2025

However, she added that the kilt is nothing new to Dior. "In some ways, the Bar jacket and skirt is an interpretation by Mr Dior of the kilt and its jacket."

Of course, Christian Dior had a great personal connection to Scotland too, which was part of the reasoning behind doing a show in the country. Not only did he tour Scotland many times, but he was he inspired by the nation's traditions in his work and hosted various shows and events in the country during his time heading up the house.

dior cruise 2025

There is also a great connection between Scotland and France, which Grazia Chiuri wanted to reference in the collection, particularly paying tribute to Mary, Queen of Scots.

"Mary was Queen of France as well as Scotland – and she used fantastic embroidery to tell her story, to send a message," Grazia Chiuri said. "All these references are inside the collection in a contemporary way." For this, the house worked closely with author, historian and artist Clare Hunter whose book about the royal served as a key inspiration in the collection.

And, nodding to the relationship between Scotland and France made the gardens of Drummond Castle the perfect location for the show to take place in. As Grazia Chiuri explains, the design of the gardens features French and Italian references and has, in fact, been nicknamed the 'Versailles of Scotland'.

dior cruise 2025

All in all, it made for a joyful show – one which was watched by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Rosamund Pike and Lily Collins – and a true celebration of Scotland.

Shipboard Information

Explore the beauty of Scotland from the water on your boutique cruise ship, Lord of the Highlands. As a small cruise ship, she can sail to off-the-beaten track ports and destinations not accessible by larger ships. To prepare for your perfect cruise holiday, here is all the shipboard information you need to know about life on board.

Access to the vessel, whilst on the Caledonian Canal, is via a lowered stepped gangway, and a ramp gangway whilst out at sea. Internally, there are two stairways each of 11 steps that inter-connect each deck level – all have a handrail. There is no lift on board and therefore, the ship is not suitable for guests with severe mobility impairment. Guests with limited mobility can be accommodated provided they are accompanied by an assisting companion.

Air Conditioning/Heating:

Lord of the Highlands is both air-conditioned and heated as and when appropriate throughout the voyage. Cabins have individual controls to regulate the temperature.

We regret that children under the age of 12 cannot be accommodated.

Communication:

Mobile phones are in range for most of the voyage(s), but please note some blind spots do exist, particularly in the remote lochs and islands. Mobile phones should be switched off in public rooms. Wi-Fi access is available.

Daily Programme:

The following day’s daily ‘activity programme’ – comprising the intended navigation to be undertaken, any excursion activities, timings as well as other pertinent and interesting information – is placed in individual cabins each evening.

Dietary Requests:

Most of the usual dietary requests can be arranged providing prior notification is made. However, diets that require specific or particular religious observance cannot be accommodated.

Dress Code:

Dress is generally smart casual, with perhaps a jacket worn for dinner. Extra efforts are normally made for the welcome and farewell gala dinners. Black Tie is not necessary.

Electrical Current:

Voltage on board is 220/240 with British sockets.

Towels and toiletries are provided in the en-suite shower room, including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap and a shower cap.

Gratuities:

Hebridean operates a strict ‘no-tipping’ policy. Click here for what’s included in our all inclusive cruise fares.

Hairdryers:

Hairdryers are located in each cabin.

Due to restrictions on space there are no dry (or wet) cleaning facilities on board. An iron and ironing board is available on request.

A small selection of games and reference books are available at the rear of the lounge/bar area.

Luggage Storage:

Suitcases can be stowed in the compartments provided under the beds.

Medical Assistance:

Since Lord of the Highlands is never more than a few hours away from port, and most times within a few minutes, medical assistance can be arranged ashore.

Caledonian Restaurant:

The single sitting Caledonian Restaurant provides for open seating, with the guideline meal times being – 08:00 till 09:30 for buffet breakfast, 12:30 lunch and 19:30 dinner. Times do vary on occasions, according to the departure and return times of excursions, and when so varied are indicated in the Daily Programme notes. For early risers, complimentary hot beverages are available in the bar on a self-service basis – as well as throughout the day.

At the beginning of each voyage, the Master will conduct a safety briefing indicating the emergency procedures and facilities on board. Special care should be taken not to embark or disembark the vessel whilst in the locks. Guests should note that the companionway decks around the exterior of the vessel are principally designed for ease of access, as well as more generally for manoeuvring the vessel. Whilst berthing or navigating through the locks guests should not access these areas since they could, in certain circumstances, represent a hazard given the constant crew movements along the vessel’s length, and the stowing of fenders etc. Guests should, at all times, avoid those areas which specifically state for ‘Crew Only’.

The ship operates a non-smoking policy in all of the interior and exterior areas, including cabins and private balconies.

Satellite TV Channels/Film:

The vessel is equipped to receive a limited number of satellite TV channels which are available in each cabin and certain public areas.

A safe deposit box is located inside the wardrobe of each cabin.

Windows and Portholes:

For security these cannot be opened.
