Citi's new online travel booking platform allows customers to buy travel with cash or Citi ThankYou points . The portal is called Citi Travel with Booking.com and is managed by the online travel agency.

Now that the portal is live, Citi ThankYou points fans can earn and redeem points for travel and other merchandise in time for summer and beyond.

What to know about the Citi travel portal

1. you can book flights, hotels and car rentals.

The booking portal allows you to book all kinds of travel through the Citi website or mobile app. It includes car rentals, airlines and hotels (1.4 million hotels, to be exact, via Booking.com).

This can be a great way for you to pay for an upcoming trip with cash or to use your Citi ThankYou points to redeem for free or reduced-cost travel. Note that when redeeming your points for airline travel, you are eligible to earn frequent flyer miles. This is a smart money move to take advantage of your points while also growing your mileage balance .

However, when using Citi ThankYou points for hotel stays, you’re not eligible for earning hotel loyalty points or taking advantage of elite status benefits. This is because these hotel stays aren't booked directly through the hotel. Most hotel loyalty programs don’t provide points or perks when booking through third-party websites (including Booking.com, which is running this new Citi Travel platform).

Still, booking hotels via the Citi Travel portal is a good opportunity to redeem points for a stay at a hotel where you don’t have status or in a destination where you can’t earn or take advantage of status.

2. You can pay with points, cash or a combination

The new portal shows 1.4 million hotel reservation options because of its partnership with Booking.com. Plus, you can continue to pay entirely in cash, entirely in points or with a mix of cash and points.

This provides greater value for your points since you don't have to wait until you have enough for a particular redemption. Instead, you can use a combination and put any number of points in your account immediately to work for you.

3. You'll earn bonus points when booking

Between now and Dec. 31, 2025, new and existing cardholders can score bonus points for their travel reservations. Citi Rewards+® Card members earn 5x points when using their cards for hotel, car rentals and attractions booked through CitiTravel.com.

4. It pays to understand how reservations work

When making a reservation through an online travel agency like Booking.com (even under the Citi ThankYou rewards branding), you’ll have to contact the agency about any travel changes or disruptions. It is the travel agency that handles changes instead of the airlines, hotels and other travel partners that you booked travel with.

Citi says that their agents are available 24/7, and that there will be a dedicated Booking.com-backed customer support team for Citi cardholders. Still, some people may find it frustrating that they cannot deal directly with the travel provider since this is a third-party travel agency reservation. Just be aware of this limitation when making any reservation through an online travel agency.

If you want to change or cancel a flight , for example, you’ll have to contact the Citi-dedicated customer service, not the airline.

5. You can redeem points for other purchases, too

You can redeem Citi ThankYou points at other partners, too, including CVS, Choice Hotels and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts among others. There are 180 redemption partners.

The new Citi travel portal launched earlier this year , offering an enhanced user experience, more hotel options and a new feature for booking activities and attractions. Citi Travel with Booking.com is powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda, utilizing the features and booking availability of Booking.com's brands.

In this article, we will explore the functionality of the new Citi travel portal, discuss any potential drawbacks and clarify who can access this booking engine. Additionally, we will provide a step-by-step guide on using the portal to book your desired travel experiences and explain how to pay using your ThankYou points.

What is the Citi travel portal?

There are four main selling points for using Citi Travel with Booking.com.

First, it provides a one-stop shop for travel that you can pay for with your Citi ThankYou points while booking multiple elements of a trip simultaneously. This can be simpler than transferring points to separate airline or hotel partners and booking your trip piece by piece — and you can even use as many or as few points as you want. The downside is that you might achieve less value from your points to gain simplicity.

Second, the portal allows you to use points to pay for travel beyond flights and hotels, such as guided tours and theme park tickets. You can't do this with Citi's list of transfer partners, and you may achieve better value paying for travel with points in Citi's portal than you would by cashing out your points .

Third, certain card benefits require using the Citi travel portal. This is true of hotel benefits built into the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants) and Citi Strata Premier℠ Card (see rates and fees ). We'll explore those below.

The fact that Citi's portal provides a one-stop shop for your vacation is its main strength. The ability to book hotels, rental cars and even entrance tickets to tourist attractions in one place (and even pay for these with your points) provides great simplicity.

How to use the Citi travel portal

Citi's portal sets itself apart from competitors by being available to anyone with a credit card earning Citi ThankYou points . For comparison, some travel portals reserve their best features for cardholders with expensive premium credit cards . Thus, you can access the portal with the $495-a-year Citi Prestige Card and the no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+ Card .

You can access Citi Travel with Booking.com by clicking this link and logging into your Citi account. If you have multiple Citi credit cards, you must select which card you want to use for booking travel. Once you select a card, you're ready to start booking travel.

How to book flights using the Citi travel portal

Booking flights in Citi's portal functions similarly to other portals. You'll choose whether this is a one-way or round-trip flight and provide the route, number of passengers, dates and class of travel. Unfortunately, you can't book multi-city itineraries.

Here's an example search from Chicago to Los Angeles. Note that you can use cities for your search if you don't have a specific airport preference.

The Citi Travel portal offers many filters and sorting options to help you find the most suitable travel options. These filters allow you to refine your search based on price, duration, departure and arrival times, number of connections and even your preferred airline. Furthermore, you can sort the results using these options without losing any filtering choices.

To change the sorting order of the results, click on the "Best overall" drop-down menu on the right side above the price of the first result.

Once you have selected a flight, you will be prompted to provide passenger information, including names, dates of birth, frequent flyer numbers and known traveler numbers for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry (if applicable).

Additionally, before making your payment, you can upgrade to a higher class of travel if it is available. This is the first time you'll see the cost to book a main cabin fare instead of a basic economy fare.

And if your fare class lets you select a seat, you can do so before heading to the payment page.

On the final page, you'll choose how you want to pay (with your points, credit card or a mix of the two) and complete your purchase. The redemption rate is an underwhelming 1 cent per point. For context, our valuations peg ThankYou points at 1.8 cents apiece, which you should be able to get by maximizing Citi's transfer partners .

How to book hotels using the Citi travel portal

Booking hotels will feel familiar to those who have used other portals.

You should choose your Citi Strata Premier or Citi Prestige card before beginning your hotel search if you intend to use those cards' benefits. Strata Premier cardholders can use a $100 hotel credit each calendar year on a booking of $500 or more. In contrast, Prestige cardholders get a fourth night free on hotel bookings in the portal, available up to twice per calendar year.

From here, you can add filters to help you reduce your results, such as by price, neighborhood, star rating and nearby attractions.

Once you pick a property, you'll see details on its amenities and features.

Then, you can select your desired room.

After choosing a room type, you can pay with points at checkout. Again, each point is worth a lackluster 1 cent.

You'll also have the option to view the cancellation policy before paying. Since policies can vary, ensure you know whether it's possible to change or cancel your booking before you make the final payment.

However, if you book a hotel that's part of a major loyalty program — like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy — through Citi, you likely won't earn points, nor will you enjoy any elite status perks on your reservation.

Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection properties

Alongside its revamped portal, Citi has introduced two new hotel programs, namely the Hotel Collection and the Luxury Collection. These programs offer similar advantages to other luxury hotel programs offered by credit cards .

Reservations through the Hotel and Luxury Collection have no minimum stay requirements. However, access to the Luxury Collection is exclusive to Citi Strata Premier and Citi Prestige cardholders.

You will receive guaranteed benefits such as daily breakfast for two people and complimentary Wi-Fi for Hotel Collection bookings. In addition to these perks, the Luxury Collection offers a $100 on-property credit, which can be used based on the policies of each hotel. Both programs also provide other benefits, such as early check-in, late checkout and room upgrades (specifically for Luxury Collection bookings, subject to availability at check-in).

Unfortunately, you can't filter search results specifically for Hotel and Luxury collections properties. To identify these properties, you must look for a tag or description indicating their inclusion in your search results.

How to book rental cars using the Citi travel portal

Searching for rental cars feels familiar and works quickly.

After providing your location, dates, times and age, click "Search." From the available results, you can use the following filters:

• Vehicle type
• Rental company
• Free cancellation option availability

After choosing a car, you can see the full details and cancellation policy on the next page.

As with other items in Citi Travel with Booking.com , you can add your rental car to the shopping cart (if booking multiple travel elements) or go straight to check out to pay and reserve. Again, you can pay with points at a rate of 1 cent apiece.

How to book attractions using the Citi travel portal

One standout feature of Citi's travel portal is the ability to book attractions along with your hotels, flights and rental cars. This convenient option allows you to make a single transaction for all your travel needs, and you can even use your points to pay for them.

To access this feature, look for the "Attractions" option in the main search bar. However, depending on your location within the portal, you may need to click "More" in the drop-down menu and select "Attractions" from there.

Once you search for a destination, you'll see all available options— from entrance tickets for tourist sights to guided tours. For example, you can book a guided walking tour of the Hollywood Sign.

When you see an activity or tickets you want to purchase, click on the tile. This will take you to a page with details about this offering and cancellation policies.

One noteworthy option is Chicago CityPASS tickets, including access to five popular attractions. Click on "Check availability" in the top right corner to choose your preferred date to find pricing and availability.

As with other elements of Citi's portal, you can pay for attraction bookings using ThankYou points with a value of 1 cent apiece.

More things to consider about the Citi travel portal

Now that you know how to use the Citi travel portal, here's some general guidance to maximize your experience.

As always, we recommend comparing prices. There is no guarantee that Citi Travel with Booking.com will offer the best price for your trip. It's recommended to compare the prices you see on the portal with prices available when booking directly with hotels, airlines, rental car companies or tour providers.

If you plan to pay with points, check if you can get better value by using fewer points with Citi's transfer partners . Also, if you book hotels or car rentals through Citi's travel portal, you may forfeit any elite status earnings and benefits. Many loyalty programs require direct bookings to recognize elite status and provide associated perks. Evaluate whether the benefits you would be giving up are worth it.

Finally, Citi Strata Premier and Citi Prestige cardholders have exclusive benefits within the travel portal. Premier cardholders can enjoy $100 off a hotel stay of $500 or more once a calendar year, while Prestige cardholders can get a fourth night free on hotel stays of four nights or more twice a calendar year. If you're making an eligible hotel reservation, you'll see the option to use your available benefit on the payment screen.

You'll also see the benefit(s) highlighted on the hotel search page if you have one of these cards. This includes information on how many more times your benefit can be used.

If you don't see these benefits, check the top right corner of the portal and ensure your Premier or Prestige card is the active card for your searches.

Bottom line

Citi's revamped travel portal allows you to search and make travel reservations for flights, hotels, rental cars, and even tours and attractions. You can book travel up to a year in advance and pay using your Citi ThankYou points or any travel credit card .

Travelers are booking open-jaw flights to Europe to save money and extend trips. A travel advisor explains how it works.

• Travelers can save on airfare by booking open-jaw flights for European trips.
• The flights land in one city and depart from another, making it easy to visit multiple destinations.
• Open-jaw flights offer flexibility and are typically cheaper than round-trip options.

When traveling through Europe , many tourists like to maximize their trip by hitting more than one destination. It's easy to visit multiple countries in one trip thanks to the continent's massive, convenient train system .

According to Sonia Bhagwan, the owner and senior travel agent at Dreaming of Sun — Dream Vacations , vacationers can save a lot on airfare by booking open-jaw flights — a method of traveling where you fly into one city and out of another, rather than booking a round-trip flight and returning to the first destination.

"In past years, round-trip flights were the most economical," she told BI. "But in the past nine months, open-jaw flights have been less expensive and offer additional flexibility for seeing multiple destinations without being rushed."

Bhagwan told BI that she often suggests open-jaw flights for clients, especially those traveling to Europe. She said they're most popular for trips to England, Spain, and Italy.

"A solid 75% of my families traveling to Europe use this method to maximize their time and money spent," Bhagwan said. "Most times, it will save them a few thousand dollars."

How to book an open-jaw flight

When searching for an open-jaw flight, don't hit the "one-way" tab. Instead, on most search engines, you'll find an option labeled "multi-city."

BI previously reported that these flights are typically cheaper than one-way flights .

According to a Google Flights search for about six months in advance, it costs about $700 with the multi-city tool to fly from NYC to Rome and then from Barcelona back to NYC. But with the one-way tool, it's nearly $1,000. And a train from Rome to Barcelona may cost around $80, according to Rail Europe , so open-jaw flights would save $220.

Some savings can be even greater. In another search in the same timeframe, flying from Indianapolis to Paris and then from Madrid back to Indianapolis would cost about $930 with the multi-city tool and $1,600 with the one-way tool. Factor in a $65 train ticket, according to Rail Europe , and you'd save about $600.

Considering that these prices reflect just one person, it's easy to see how families can save thousands.

How to maximize money saved

According to Bhagwan, the best way to book an open-jaw flight is to start searching between four and six months in advance.

"Eyeball the flight prices for a few days to get a sense of the going rate. Then start looking at those same routes weekly," she said. "You will get a sense of when prices increase and decrease."

Bhagwan says it's usually cheapest to book on a Sunday night.

"This is when new flights get added into the rotation, and prices typically are at their lowest — but not always," she said. "If the price seems high, wait a week and search again."

Bhagwan also suggests booking flexible or refundable rates directly through the airline's website.

"This is best because that allows you to change flights if you see a price drop a few weeks later," she added.

Traveling to Europe can be expensive, but open-jaw flights can make them more affordable when visiting multiple cities.

Makishi Public Market  Lovingly dubbed the “kitchen of Okinawa”, the Makishi Public Market in Naha sells the freshest catches of the day, as well as Agu pork, Ishigaki beef, and many other specialty produce of Okinawa. Thousands line streets for 6th Annual Buffalo Grove Pride Parade

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- Everyone loves a parade, and everyone was invited to the Sixth Annual Buffalo Grove Pride Parade on Sunday morning.

Onlookers gathered to watch the colorful parade entries. Many sported the rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Pinta family started the parade six years ago.

"We thought it would be us and our family and tree groups walking down the street, looking at trees," Bob Pinta said.

Instead, it has grown to more than 100 units with plenty of music and a family-friendly atmosphere for the several thousand people lining the streets.

"Who doesn't love a parade that celebrates love, inclusivity and free candy?" said parade-goer Barry Stark.

Molly Pinta and her mother first started the Gay-Straight Alliance in their school, and it led to this Pride festival and parade.

"There are plenty of people in the community, at my school who don't get that support, and that's who this parade is for," Molly said.

In this election year, there are also lots of politicians, including President Joe Biden, or at least, his likeness.

"We did see that. I asked where Jill was. She was not in the car!" said parade-goer Lori Blum.

Many in the LGBTQ+ community are concerned the political gains they have made in recent years could be in jeopardy, and they are focused on getting out the vote.

"It's important to show that everyone's voice matters," said parade-goer Yusuf Tewolde.

"It is dire that we get out the vote," said parade organizer Carolyn Pinta.

Many of these folks will be celebrating Pride for all of June, including at the Chicago Pride Parade at the end of the month.

This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to us as occurring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. Mayor Bass signs order allowing Pride flag to be flown at LA City Hall during June

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Mayor Karen Bass announced Saturday she has signed an ordinance unanimously approved by the City Council allowing the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag to be raised at City Hall and elsewhere in the Civic Center in June.

"I'm proud to have signed this historic motion to fly the Pride Flag over City Hall," Bass said in a statement issued early Saturday. "Our message to the rest of the country and to the world is clear -- now more than ever, we must stand together.

"I want to thank Councilman Tim McOsker and the rest of City Council for working together to get this done. We know the harm that discrimination and hate brings and I'm proud that in Los Angeles, we accept our LGBTQIA+ community with open arms."

The City Council approved the new policy Friday on a 12-0 vote. McOsker and fellow council members John Lee and Kevin de León were absent during the vote.

On Tuesday, council members instructed the City Attorney's Office to prepare an ordinance to update the current flag regulations. Council members wanted to change the policy to ensure that the Progress Pride Flag -- a version of the Pride Flag that some LGBTQ+ advocates say is more inclusive -- was flown in time for Pride Month in June.

The monthlong celebration commemorates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride, a movement that began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969 in New York City.

Council members McOsker, Monica Rodriguez, Traci Park, Hugo Soto- Martinez and Bob Blumenfield introduced a motion last year seeking to raise the Progress Pride Flag at City Hall, City Hall East, City Hall South and other city facilities where the American, California and city flags are displayed during June.

City Charter Section 7.66 prohibits flags other than the American, California and city flags from being raised at City Hall or any other city facilities. The council members introduced the motion in June 2023, but were too late to raise the flag that year.

Last year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to raise the Progress Pride Flag at several government buildings.

The Progress Pride Flag was created in 2018 by graphic designer Daniel Quasar. It retains the common six-stripe rainbow design of the original gay pride flag, but adds black, brown, light blue, pink and white stripes to include other marginalized people, including the Black and Indigenous communities and other people of color, and people who have died from or are currently living with HIV/AIDS.

The decision comes at a time when some Southland communities are moving in the opposite direction. In May, the Downey City Council enacted a "neutral flag" policy on a 3-2 vote, taking down the Pride Flag that had previously flown for three years at City Hall. In March, more than 58% of voters in Huntington Beach approved a ban on nongovernmental flags, including those for Pride Month, being flown on city property.

At least two California school districts, in Temecula and the Bay Area community of Sunol, have also banned Pride Flags.

The first known Pride Flag debuted at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in June 1978. At the encouragement of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, artist Gilbert Baker designed the flag to symbolize the value and dignity of the gay community.

In June 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom requested that the Pride Flag be flown on the main flagpole at the State Capitol building in commemoration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month -- marking the first time in state history that had occurred.

But historians say a Pride Flag was previously flown at the state Capitol on Oct. 11, 1990 for Coming Out Day, reportedly the first time such a flag was flown at a state capitol building in the United States.
