Public transport tickets

Where to buy? Tickets are sold at newsagent kiosks. One ticket is used for all means of public transport and is valid for buses, trams and the underground. In some towns you can buy tickets from the driver (at a surcharge), from ticket machines on board or at underground stations.

Ticket inspections may be frequent and the failure to produce a valid ticket may lead to a fine. The transport company inspectors are ununiformed but they carry an ID card which they are obliged to present to the passenger.

What types of tickets are available? Not all cities have the same type of tickets. In some, you can buy tickets which are valid for a specific length of time – 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, one day, 24 hours etc. Such tickets can be used to travel by any means of public transport within the allocated time. When the ticket is stamped in the machine on board, the time is printed on the ticket. The ticket should only be stamped once. In some cities also single journey tickets are available.

Rail tickets The best place to buy rail tickets is the station. Express / IC InterCity / EC EuroCity trains are charged extra for seat booking.Vist the information desk to enquire about timetables, prices and special offers. If you happen to be too late to buy a ticket at the station, you can still board the train and, as soon as possible, ask the guard to sell you a ticket (at a surcharge).

Using your own transport

Headlights All vehicles are required to use headlights, night day and and all year round.

Seatbelts The use of seat belts is compulsory for front and rear-seat passengers.

Roads and motorways The condition of Polish roads could be described as relatively good. In the vicinity of the larger cities road surfaces are improving every month. Secondary roads can be qualified as being in a satisfactory condition.

Conditions on the roads Apart from these motorways there are many dual carriageways and single-lane roads. The surface of some of these roads has been deformed by ruts cut into the road surface during the summer by TIR trucks. In general drivers have to be a little more vigilant in Poland when driving along the minor roads in this country.

• built-up area – 50 km/h
• outside built-up area – 90 km/h
• dual carriageway – 120 km/h
• single-lane road – 100 km/h
• twin lane carriageway with at least two lanes per direction – 100 km/h
• motorway – 140 km/h

Road use charges In Poland there is a toll on motorways (A1, A2, A4 and A8). These tolls are collected using two systems:

• open system: The tolls are collected at toll booths situated on motorways. The toll depends on the type of vehicle.
• closed system (viaTOLL system): The tolls are collected at toll booths situated on access roads, on junction roads and additionally on the final sections of motorways. The toll depends on the type of vehicle and the distance covered.

viaTOLL is an electronic toll collection system that charges road users for using selected sections of toll road network. Vehicles required to pay electronic tolls are the motor vehicles or combinations of vehicles with maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes and buses regardless of its maximum permissible weight. viaTOLL system covers caravanning. Vehicles have to be equipped with little on-board units (so called viaBOX) which communicate with transmitters in toll gantries. Each time a vehicle equipped with viaBOX technology passes beneath the gantry the driver is charged for that particular section of toll road.

Customs duty When travelling to Poland from a country outside the EU, you should take note some customs procedures and regulations. This will avoid the disappointment when some of the items you bought during your stay in Poland turn out to be subject to customs restrictions..

If you are 17 years of age or over, you may legally bring into Poland goods for your personal use and consumption, free of customs duty, as long as the quantity of the goods does not exceed:

tobacco products:

• 200 cigarettes
• 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars
• 250 g of tobacco
• a proportional quantity of all of these various products combined;

spirits and alcoholic drinks:

• alcoholic beverages with alcohol volume content of more than 22% and pure ethyl alcohol with alcohol volume content of more than 80% – 1 litre,
• alcoholic beverages, wine- or alcohol-based aperitifs, taffia, sake or similar drinks with alcohol volume content up to 22%; sparkling wines, liqueurs – 2 litres
• non-sparkling wines – 2 litres

If you are 17 years of age or over and you are a resident of the frontier zone, a frontier zone worker or a member of the crew of a means of transport used for travel between third countries and the EU, you may legally bring into Poland goods for your personal use and consumption, free of customs duty, in quantities which do not exceed:

• alcoholic beverages with alcohol volume content of more than 22% and pure ethyl alcohol with alcohol volume content of more than 80% – 0.5 litre
• alcoholic beverages, wine- or alcohol-based aperitifs, taffia, sake or similar drinks with alcohol volume content up to 22%; sparkling wines, liqueurs – 0.5 litre
• non-sparkling wines – 0.5 litre
• 0,5 litre of spirits
• 0,5 litre of intermediary products
• 0,5 litres of non-sparkling wine

The value of the goods listed above may not exceed amount in PLN equivalent to EUR 80.00. You should be aware of the current control regulations in Poland before taking out funds in excess of EUR 10,000. Please be aware that you will be asked to document any other goods brought in quantities which may be reasonably considered as being imported for commercial use.

Import restrictions You must not bring with you (unless under a special permit) such banned goods as:

• unlicensed drugs (e.g. heroin, morphine, cocaine, cannabis, etc),
• offensive weapons (e.g. firearms, flick knives, knuckledusters, swords, etc)
• indecent and obscene materials featuring children and other pornographic materials which are considered illegal in EU countries.
• counterfeit and pirated goods and goods that infringe patents (e.g. watches, CDs, etc)

Protection of national heritage

To export from Poland to any foreign country (both within and outside the EU) an object of historic value, a work of art or an object of Poland’s industrial heritage, you must obtain a suitable permit issued by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Antique shops or other legitimate sellers offering such objects for sale should be able to offer assistance in obtaining the required permit.

Export permits  are not required  in case of:

• Objects which are not entered in the Inventory of National Heritage and which are not older than 55 years;
• Objects of industrial heritage, which are entered in the Inventory of National Heritage and which are not older than 25 years;
• Works of are created by living artists;
• Library items dated after 31 December 1948;
• Other objects of historic value which are not entered in the Inventory of National Heritage.

A certificate stating that an object mentioned above does not require export permit must be obtained. Certificates are issued by the local Curator of National Heritage Monuments. Ask the vendor offering such objects for sale to assist you in obtaining the required certificate.

Avian flu Because of the danger of avian flu, Poland – like other EU countries – does not allow import of animal products whose country of origin is outside of the EU. This ban does not apply to infant products (on condition that such products do not require refrigeration prior to consumption, and the packaging is intact). Meat and milk can only be imported under a special permit.

Alcohol & Cigarettes

Poland has no specific laws regulating alcohol consumption. There are, however, certain restrictions as to the age and venues where people are permitted to drink alcohol. It is also worth remembering that being under the influence of alcohol is not a mitigating factor if an offence has been committed. While smoking tobacco is going out of fashion in Poland, it is not prohibited to smoke in public places.

Drinking in public places In Poland, it is prohibited to drink alcohol in public places, with the exception of properly licensed designated places, such as bars, restaurants, open air café gardens, etc. Underage drinking It is strictly prohibited to sell or offer alcohol to young people under the age of 18 years. Likewise, underage drinking is not allowed in licensed bars and restaurants. Drinking & driving In Poland, the legal limit of blood alcohol content is 20 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. Driving while under the influence of alcohol (between 20 mg and 50 mg) is an offence punishable by a fine. Driving while being above the 50 mg limit is a serious offence which leads to criminal conviction and possible seizure of the vehicle. Offenders face a possibility of immediate arrest and up to two years’ imprisonment. Smoking in public places Although in Poland it is not illegal to smoke in many public places, there are also regulations aiming at protecting non-smokers. With an increasing number of Polish people preferring a healthy lifestyle, smoking is no longer generally acceptable. The anti-smoking lobby is gaining popularity not only by promoting a healthy lifestyle for smokers, but mainly by protecting passive smokers. A nationwide campaign has been launched to declare 31 May a ‘Non Smoking Day’. Because of these concerns, smoking is now prohibited in many places. Many such places may have, however, designated smoking areas. Therefore, in restaurants, pubs, on trains, in theatres, colleges, etc. you may only smoke in such designated areas. Smoking is strictly prohibited in places marked with special signs (a cigarette crossed with a red line).

Are there any other types of travel restrictions besides COVID-19 tests and quarantines?

These are the two main types of restrictions or requirements needed to travel into another country. However, the COVID-19 testing options are continually widening as new methods are developed. Different countries may accept results from different or multiple test types, so be sure to check the individual country's specific requirements.

What should I do if I get COVID-19 while in another country?

If you get COVID-19 while in another country, follow the local authority's recommendations. These may include hospitalization, self-isolating and testing in that country. Be sure to contact your travel insurance company and travel provider as well and inform them of your situation.

What should I do if the borders of the country I am visiting close?

Depending on your home country, you may need to change your departure date and return home as soon as possible. If that's the case, contact your travel provider to find the earliest departure.

• Visiting your children and grandchildren in Canada

Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, need a valid Canadian passport . American-Canadians can travel with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport.

Canadian permanent residents need a valid permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document .

U.S. citizens must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.

As of April 26, 2022, lawful permanent residents of the United States must show these documents for all methods of travel to Canada:

• a valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent acceptable travel document ) and
• a valid green card (or equivalent valid proof of status in the United States)

You need an official proof of status as a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., such as one of the following:

• valid permanent resident card (Form I-551)
• foreign passport with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (also known as an Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication [ADIT] stamp)
• foreign passport with a temporary I-551 printed notation (“Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year”) on a machine-readable immigrant visa upon endorsement with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection admission stamp

Look on the front cover of your passport for the symbol of a rectangle with a circle in the middle. If you see this symbol, you have an electronic passport.

Foreign nationals with official Canadian documents

• Travellers with a valid Canadian visa.
• Travellers with valid status in Canada (e.g. visitor, student or worker) who re-enters Canada after only visiting the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Foreign nationals in the following situations

• French citizens who live in Saint Pierre and Miquelon and are flying directly to Canada from St. Pierre and Miquelon.
• Foreign nationals who are passengers destined to, or coming from, the United States on a flight that stops in Canada solely to refuel and
• have proper documents to enter the United States, or
• were lawfully admitted to the United States.
• Foreign nationals who are passengers on a flight that makes an unscheduled stop in Canada.
• Foreign nationals who transit through a Canadian airport under the Transit Without Visa or China Transit Program .

Travel and official representatives

• Flight crew, civil aviation inspectors, accident investigators who are or will be working while in Canada.
• Members of Armed Forces (not including the civilian component of an armed forces) of a country designated under the Visiting Forces Act coming to Canada to carry out official duties.
• Diplomats accredited by the Government of Canada.

Donald Trump Is Banned from 37 Countries as Convicted Felon, Including Major Allies Like Canada and U.K.

If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Former President Donald Trump, whose administration imposed multiple versions of a travel ban against people coming from Muslim-majority nations, may now face restrictions on his own international travel, following his felony conviction in New York Thursday. 

At this point, Trump faces no specific travel restrictions from Justice Juan Merchan, who presided over the "hush money" criminal trial in New York, in which the former president was found guilty of 34 felony counts. His sentencing is scheduled to take place on July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention, which will formalize his nomination to the presidency. Trump, who's in the middle of a presidential campaign and has  three other criminal trials pending, has announced no international travel plans. 

The U.S. doesn't allow foreigners with felony convictions to enter the country, and neither do a number of other countries. Allies including the U.K. and Australia have strict restrictions on traveling there as a convicted felon, according to the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Canada, which will be hosing the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025, also has strict requirements for visitors with a criminal history. And felons are banned from entering China. 

But it's possible international leaders would make exceptions for Trump if he wins the presidency again. Former President George W. Bush had to apply for a special waiver to enter Canada on an official state visit, because he had pleaded guilty decades earlier to a 1976 drunk driving charge. And that was a misdemeanor offense, not a felony. 

Trump has plans to renew and revamp travel restrictions to the U.S., if he's president again. Last year, he said he would bring back a travel ban "even bigger than before," alluding to his administration's restrictions on travelers from several countries that have largely Muslim populations. 

The Supreme Court eventually upheld a version of his travel ban, 5-4, in 2018. Chief Justice John Roberts, wrote in the majority opinion that presidents have substantial power to regulate immigration. "The sole prerequisite," Roberts wrote, is "that the entry of the covered aliens 'would be detrimental to the interests of the United States.' The President has undoubtedly fulfilled that requirement here." He also noted that Trump had ordered an evaluation of every country's compliance with the risk assessment baseline and then issued the findings.

When he talks about the spike in numbers of undocumented migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, the former president also regularly paints them broadly as "criminals."

"So we are moving criminals out of our country, and we are getting them out in record numbers, and those are the people we are after," the former president said toward the beginning of his term during a 2017 interview with the Associated Press. 

As he awaits his sentencing in the "hush money" case, Trump maintains he did nothing wrong. 

"I'm willing to do whatever I have to do to save our country and to save our Constitution. I don't mind," he said in remarks at Trump Tower on Friday.

Poland to restrict travel by Russian diplomats

Poland has announced that it will impose restrictions on Russian diplomats’ movements in the country in response to Moscow’s involvement in “hybrid warfare.”

“These will be limitations on the movement of Russian diplomats in our country,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the media in Brussels.

He said the restrictions stemmed from Russia’s involvement in destabilising activities against the European Union (EU), including Poland.

The restrictions will affect all diplomatic staff and other embassy personnel in Warsaw, except the ambassador.

Diplomats will only be permitted to move within the central Mazovia region, and consuls within the provinces where they work, the minister explained.

Poland recently revealed the arrest of several individuals, suspected of sabotage on behalf of Russian intelligence services. The suspects are accused of assaults, arson and attempted arson..

In mid-May, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a strengthening of Polish intelligence services following Moscow-directed activities intended to destabilise Poland, according to Warsaw.

Tusk also claimed that several sabotage attempts had been thwarted, “thanks to the vigilance of our services and allies.”

Following Warsaw’s announcement, Russia promised retaliatory measures against Poland. “We will ensure that the Polish leaders, who are overcome with Russophobia, greatly regret the next anti-Russian measures taken,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova is quoted as saying by Russian news services.

Can Trump Vote As A Convicted Felon? Here’s What Rights He Could Lose.

A jury is deliberating whether Donald Trump will become a convicted felon, prompting questions around what rights the former president would—and would not have—if he is convicted of falsifying business records in New York. (Update: Jury finds Trump guilty in hush-money trial.)

A Florida resident with a felony conviction in another state is only ineligible to vote in Florida “if the conviction would make the person ineligible to vote in the state where the person was convicted,” according to the Florida Division of Elections website—Trump has been a Florida resident since 2019.

So, if Trump were convicted in New York and unable to vote there, he would not be able to vote in Florida, but in New York, convicted felons only lose their voting rights while incarcerated, meaning—even if convicted—Trump would be able to vote as long as he doesn’t go to jail.

Trump faces a fine of up to $5,000 and up to four years in prison for each of the 34 felony counts he faces, but legal experts have generally said it’s unlikely he is sentenced to jail time—at least in part because of the “ripple effect” having a former president in jail would create.

Blair Bowie, an attorney at the Campaign Legal Center, told NBC News the only way Trump “wouldn’t be able to vote is if he is in prison on Election Day,” citing New York’s felon voting protocols.

If convicted, Trump could also appeal the case and ask for any potential prison sentence to be delayed during appeal, which could be a way of ensuring he could vote even if he faces jail time.

A conviction also wouldn’t prevent Trump from running for president as the only requirements, per the Constitution, are for presidential candidates to be at least 35 years old and natural-born citizens who have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years.

Trump could lose his right to own a firearm if convicted, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives , which says the federal Gun Control Act makes it unlawful for someone “convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year” to possess firearms or ammunition.

Florida law prevents felons convicted in any state from serving on a jury until their civil rights are restored following completion of sentence and payment of all restitution or fees, meaning Trump would lose that right, at least temporarily.

Can Trump Pardon Himself From Hush Money Charges If He's Reelected?

If convicted and reelected, Trump could not pardon himself in this case as a president only has pardoning power over federal criminal offenses. A president cannot grant pardons for state criminal offenses—like Trump’s Manhattan charges—or federal or state civil claims.

The jury in Trump’s New York hush money case began deliberations Wednesday after almost six weeks of testimony and arguments in the case. The jury is tasked with determining whether there’s proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump falsified business records as a way to cover up efforts to “conspire to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means.”

He was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records having to do with reimbursement checks he made to his former attorney Michael Cohen after Cohen paid adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 ahead of the 2016 election, allegedly to prevent her from going public with her claims that she had an affair with Trump years prior.
