Main entrance to Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke University campus

Cameron Indoor Stadium

By Edward de la Fuente

Our guide to Cameron Indoor Stadium, home of the Duke Blue Devils, includes information on events, tickets, parking, nearby hotels and restaurants, seating capacity and more. Read on to find out how to get the most out of your gameday experience.

If you’re a college basketball fan, you almost certainly have Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium on your list of places to visit.

And why not? The history of Duke’s storied men’s basketball program is an allure in itself. Even though the architect of all that glory, coach Mike Krzyzewski, is now retired, the Blue Devils continue to be one of the sport’s blue blood programs and promises to be elite for the foreseeable future.

Coach K is honored with his name on the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium, which offers an intimate seating capacity, a close-knit on-campus feel and an atmosphere that exemplifies what college hoops is all about.

Duke’s women’s basketball program is not that far behind, and enjoys similar student body and community support.

Plus, a visit to Cameron means heading to Durham, one of the three “college town” areas that make up North Carolina’s Research Triangle. And stepping on the Duke campus can be a treat in and of itself.

Getting to Cameron Indoor Stadium

If you’ve never been to the Raleigh/Durham region, think of the three college cities — Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill — as points on a pyramid. Durham is the top point, and while it’s a pretty large city by itself (big enough to host a Triple-A baseball team) Duke University is a large presence.

Visitors to the area who arrive via Raleigh/Durham International Airport have a drive of about 15 miles to Durham and the Duke campus. From the airport grounds, head west on Interstate 40, then north on Interstate 885 before following North Carolina state route 147 toward Duke.

The Blue Devils’ sports facilities occupy the southern part of Duke’s sprawling campus. Cameron Indoor Stadium is nestled amid several larger facilities, including the football team’s Wallace Wade Stadium and the Jack Coombs baseball field.

On basketball game days at Cameron Indoor Stadium, there will be plenty of signs and traffic cops guiding fans toward the proper parking areas.

The Research Triangle doesn’t have much in the way of public transportation, and thus if you’re looking to attend a Duke basketball game and don’t have a car, you’ll have to rely on rideshare services.

The designated gameday rideshare dropoff/pickup spot is in the parking lot at the corner of Union Street and Towerview Road, across from the Duke Student Wellness Center and a short walk north of Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Parking at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Several on-campus parking lots and structures are utilized for Duke basketball games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. For general parking, most options can be found north of the arena and are accessible by taking Erwin Road, turning onto Research Drive or LaSalle Street and getting onto Circuit Road.

General parking rates begin at $25 and can be purchased in advance on Duke’s website (note: it requires creating an account).

Follow the link to find a map for men’s basketball parking and traffic patterns.

For women’s basketball games at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Science Drive Garage along Cameron Drive is the primary parking spot for fans. Parking is free.

Things to do around cameron indoor stadium.

With Cameron Indoor Stadium situated deep within Duke’s campus grounds, there won’t be much to do in the immediate vicinity, but that’s OK.

For nearby restaurants, do what the Dookies do and head over to the typical student hangouts. Erwin Street, which serves as something of a dividing line between the campus and student residences, boasts a row of eateries that typically bustle with student activity.

Or, depending on what time of day the event at Cameron Indoor Stadium is, on-campus eateries are an option. Visit The Plaza on the center of campus, north of Towerview Road, for a cluster of food purveyors as well as the university bookstore.

Farther away, 9th Street is a popular off-campus stomping ground for many Duke students. The corridor is located on the other side of State Route 147, about 1 1/2 miles away from Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Though frequented more by the general Durham community rather than the Duke student population, the shopping district along Durham-Chapel Hill Road about three miles south of campus offers numerous restaurants, many of the chain variety.

As the name suggests, the main road is a major connector between the cities of Durham and Chapel Hill, home of Duke’s archrival, the University of North Carolina. The two campus are separated by just 11 miles.

Watching a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Put Cameron Indoor Stadium just about anywhere else, and it will look and feel like any ol’ midsize-capacity, historic college basketball gym. It’s the success of the Duke men’s basketball program over the last four decades — and the fact that its home arena hasn’t grown much despite the consistently growing demand — that makes Cameron a special place to visit.

Even after Coach K’s retirement, the “Cameron Crazies” — the Duke students that fill up the student seating sections — still line up outside Cameron Indoor Stadium hours before tipoff, and sometimes days in advance if the game is big enough, to secure their places inside.

Like many other buildings on Duke’s campus, Cameron Indoor Stadium’s exterior is done in the English Gothic style, and walking up to its main entrance invokes the feeling of approaching a small castle.

Fans enter one of four arched doorways into a small atrium, where athletic department and sponsorship tables are typically set up, but the back walls are full of displays to Duke basketball’s storied history — including pieces of Final Four floors and other artifacts from championship seasons.

If you’d like a deeper dive into the program’s history, the Duke Basketball Museum is located at the back side of Cameron Indoor Stadium. The museum is free to visitors and typically open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with adjusted hours if there is a football or men’s basketball game taking place. Visit the museum’s website for information on hours on the day you plan to visit.

As for gamedays, Cameron Indoor Stadium’s seating setup is pretty basic — after all, a 9,000-capacity venue doesn’t demand anything intricate.

Sections 17-20, are accessed by walking in at floor level, and are mainly reserved for students, the Duke band and important people to the program. Meanwhile, Sections 1-16 surround the gym and require fans to walk up staircases, some fairly narrow, to reach their seats.

Once you’re in your seat, the quaintness of Cameron Indoor Stadium’s atmosphere really hits you, and it’s quite unique for a major college basketball program. The overhead videoboard is modern but small, while the baskets extend from the ceiling instead of being mounted on stanchions on the floor.

The number of banners — both to commemorate championships and great players — fill up the rafters and are a testament to both Duke basketball’s rich history and the small size of the arena.

Food and drink at Cameron Indoor Stadium

At a college facility, not to mention one with as small a capacity as Cameron Indoor Stadium, you might not expect the food selection to be anything special. However, there are a few pleasant surprises.

The North Carolina fast food chain Bojangles has a presence at Cameron, with several booths offering chicken tenders and sandwiches. Carolina BBQ sandwiches are also available at Hog Heaven stands. These stands, and other selections such as pimiento cheese sandwiches, can be found in the Hall of Honor, an atrium adjacent to sections 13-16.

The usual sporting-event staples, like hamburgers, hot dogs, peanuts and popcorn, can be purchased at numerous food windows along the upper concourse.

Five Reasons Cameron Indoor Stadium Is the South’s Most Iconic Basketball Venue

The biggest college basketball gym in the region at the time it was built, Duke’s revered arena stands the test of time

By Caroline Sanders Clements

Duke University’s Cameron Indoor Stadium may blend seamlessly with the rest of the Gothic architecture on the Durham, North Carolina, campus, but among basketball faithful, it’s a standout. With only 9,314 seats, Cameron has sold out every home game since 1990. Students camp outside the arena for weeks to get tickets. Painted-up Cameron Crazies pack shoulder to shoulder on the bleachers, causing the room to vibrate.

“The fans are right on top of the players,” says Lewis Bowling, a Durham-based writer and Duke sports historian. “In press row, you can feel your body move up and down because the Cameron Crazies are stamping their feet right behind you. The stadium is so intimate players can look around the court and see the faces of the fans.”

Construction started in April 1939 and lasted nine months, costing the school $400,000 (almost $9 million today). The stadium opened in January 1940 for a matchup against Princeton (which Duke won 36–27), and in the eighty-four seasons since, it has become a bucket-list venue for basketball lovers across the country.

Here are five reasons the stadium deserves its place in college sports lore.

1. The building’s initial design was conceived on the back of a matchbox—probably.

In the 1930s, the Duke men’s basketball program was gaining steam: They’d won a few conference titles here and there and were building a steady following under the leadership of head coach Eddie Cameron. At the time, the team played in Card Gym, a 2,500-seater that still stands some twenty feet away from Cameron. “It could maybe fit three thousand people if you stuffed them in. I’ve seen pictures of fans sitting up in rafters with legs hanging down,” Bowling says. “They were selling out the gym at that time, which is where the need for the new gym came from.”

Legend holds that in 1935, Wallace Wade, the then-football coach and athletic director, and Eddie Cameron scribbled their ideas for a new stadium on the back of a matchbook. For what it’s worth, that matchbox has never been found.

2. Cameron would not exist without the Duke football team.

Basketball may reign supreme these days on Tobacco Road, but when Wade and Cameron first conceived Duke Indoor Stadium, the university was considered a football school. Wade had left the University of Alabama after the 1930 season to coach the Blue Devils, and during his sixteen-year tenure in Durham, he led the team to seven Southern Conference championships and two Rose Bowls. “Wade agreed that the 1939 Rose Bowl proceeds would be the money to start the building of Cameron Indoor,” Bowling says. “And the 1942 Rose Bowl and 1945 Sugar Bowl pretty much paid the mortgage.”

And while Duke basketball was beginning to blossom in the 1930s, no one could have foreseen where the program would end up. William P. Few, the then-president of the university, said of the plans to build Cameron Indoor: “With the new gymnasium, basketball might make a moderate yield if the people are willing to pay a reasonable admission fee.”

Bowling laughs. “I would say they accomplished that.”

3. A Black architect designed the building more than three decades before C.B. Claiborne would integrate the Duke basketball team.

For the project, Duke administration tapped the Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer, whose firm had designed the majority of West Campus, including Duke Chapel. “Hence the stadium uses on the exterior that same distinctive stone from a nearby quarry,” says John Roth, a producer for Duke sports media and editor of GoDuke magazine.

But the real mastermind of the project, who fully took it over after Trumbauer’s death in 1938, was Trumbauer’s chief designer, Julian Abele. Abele studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania before attending the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, becoming one of the first Black architects in the United States. In the midst of segregation, Abele signed his sketches for Duke Indoor Stadium, firmly cementing his place in American history.

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

4. One of the smallest Division I basketball arenas in the country today, Cameron Indoor was almost even smaller.

Abele, Trumbauer, and their team initially pitched a smaller gym that would have accommodated around five thousand spectators, a figure the architects already considered too large. Trumbauer wrote a letter to president Few saying: “For your information Yale has in its new gymnasium a basket ball (sic) court with settings (sic) for 1,600…I think the settings for 8,000 people is rather liberal.”

But Wade, Cameron, and the rest of the Duke athletic department pushed for their vision of a landmark venue. “At the time, it was the biggest arena in the U.S. south of Philadelphia’s Palestra,” Roth says. “When it opened to a crowd of eight thousand for the Princeton game in 1940, that was the largest audience ever to watch a basketball game in the South.”

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

5. It’s proof that bigger is not better.

A renovation in the late 1980s remodeled the concourse and added 750 seats. And while improvements have been made in years since—a new floor in 1997, air conditioning in 2001, a new lobby and hospitality space in 2016—more substantive changes to the gym itself are unlikely. “During the renovation in the eighties, they were looking over at Chapel Hill at the Dean Dome, which holds almost twenty-two thousand people,” Bowling says. “They’ve thought about expanding and making it bigger. But everyone—even Coach K—said let’s keep it like it is. It’s so intimate, and that’s what makes it one of the most revered arenas in the country.”

My dad, my son and I shared this experience together for the first time. None of us have ever been there before. The worst thing was parking. That wasn't even bad though, just a little walking in the cold. We had an absolute blast though! Cameron was extremely accommodating. We were afraid my son couldn't see with everyone standing. They actually marked off an area on the bottom stands just for kids and their families. They placed us where my son was able to high five the entire team and Jon Scheyer! It was amazing! My dad and I were excited being there! But my son was in Heaven! He lit up every time he showed up on the jumbotron and each time he got a high five! Security was always so nice and told the kids to get ready that someone was coming to high five! We got so many souvenirs for free and paid for. This was truly a memory that will last forever and I'm so happy that Duke was so accommodating! This is why we are duke fans and my son's nickname is JJ (aka Josh Jr).

Was a dream come true! My wife and I were able to go to a Duke basketball game! I’ve wanted to go since I could remember and we had a ball and best of all Duke won! If you’re a fan…gotta go!

Great Venus to see a basketball game! Have been here several times over the years. There's not a bad seat in cameron indoor stadium. Awesome experience!

If you are hungry there is food available from snacks to pizza to other vendors. If you are looking to just enjoy the game, that will happen too! Plenty of ushers to help you find your seat and great basketball to boot!

Always a good time. The stadium is beautiful and well maintained. The atmosphere is so full of energy and good vibes. The food options are pretty great. Can't go wrong with Bojangles and Smithfield's. The hall of fame and the swag store are really cool. The boys at Duke are ALWAYS killin it! *Swoosh*

There is no other place like Cameron. Classy, educational, vibrant, home spun, loud and ready to go back.

Really cool experience, first time to a Duke game with really great seats. The history and traditions are amazing here. Definitely recommend going with someone who is a rabid fan.

Is it college basketball, or a cult? Whatever you want to call it, Cameron Indoor — and its Crazies — are one-of-a-kind.

D URHAM, N.C. — From the outside, Cameron Indoor Stadium looks like a church. Inside, it feels like a cult.

The Cameron Crazies are in full nut mode tonight for North Carolina vs. Duke. The Blue Devil fans, all 9,314 of them, are screamers. The noise level in here was once recorded as high as 121.3 decibels, which is louder than a power saw running three feet away from your ear.

On Tobacco Road, Duke-UNC is “The Game,” the Atlantic Coast Conference’s biggest basketball rivalry. It is the equivalent of Red Sox-Yankees, or Packers-Bears, or Bruins-Canadiens. In the last 100 meetings, the series is tied, 50-50.

Photo of Cameron Indoor

Cameron is where the foul-mouthed Crazies wiggle their fingers, yell, and try to intimidate inbound passers. They invented the “air ball” chant. They’ve tossed album jackets on the court to embarrass a player who had allegedly stolen a stereo. In 1986, when North Carolina guard Steve Hale was sidelined with a partially collapsed lung, the Crazies chanted “Inhale … Exhale.” Eventually, Coach Mike Krzyzewski appealed to the Crazies to stop swearing. For a while they chanted “We beg to differ” at the referees.

But even the great Coach K had his limits.

“We respect the man, but we’re going to heckle as best we can,” says Dan Behrens, a Duke student who digs up dirt on opponents. He says the chants and insults make a difference.

The Crazies’ wildest stunt was in 2003. When UNC’s Jackie Manuel stepped to the line to shoot two free throws, Duke student Patrick King — wearing nothing but his blue speedo — jumped up and started dancing like Will Ferrell giving more cowbell. Manuel clanged both shots and later admitted he was “distracted.”

Apparently so was the girlfriend of Speedo Guy’s brother. She quickly dumped her man and married King. He later became a pastor.

Photo of Cameron Indoor

Tonight’s game against North Carolina is the first in 47 years that the Blue Devils will not be led by the legendary Coach K, the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history, who retired at the end of the 2021-22 season.

The Crazies want revenge. The Tar Heels ruined Coach K’s final game at Cameron, and then ended his career when they eliminated Duke in the Final Four.

Tickets for the game start at $1,000 on secondary markets. But the best courtside seats go to the students, and they’re free.

“It’s the best seats in basketball that money can’t buy,” says Parker Betts, a graduate student who wears a blue Cookie Monster costume for each game.

More than 1,500 students camped out in 130 tents in “Krzyzewskiville” outside Cameron for three weeks to get inside. First-year Duke coach Jon Scheyer, a former Blue Devil who won a championship in 2010, visited the tents armed with coffee, doughnuts, and hot chocolate.

“Some people had to sleep in puddles of water last night,” says Alex Caspary of Tallahassee, Fla., as he shivered in a blanket. (The university shut down the tent city around 10 p.m., when temperatures dipped below 25 degrees.)

Katalina Guma, a freshman from Nashville, said each tent had to take two trivia tests. Scores determined who got the best seats.

“We had no phones, no Apple watches,” she explained. “We just were all in a room for an hour.”

Guma says she decided to go to Duke when she visited the campus last year and saw how unique the experience was. She dressed as a human backboard for the game.

On game day, each Crazie is allowed one six pack of beer for tailgating. Everybody knows the rules for Cameron.

Students are given two page “dirt sheets” when they enter. The key dirt tonight is that the Tar Heels are the fastest team to go from No. 1 rank to unranked in men’s college basketball history. Another item says a UNC player’s nickname, given to him by his mother, is “Booger.”

Duke rookie Kyle Filipowski is a former Massachusetts boys’ basketball player of the year. In a pregame video, he calls playing at Cameron “the toughest road game in America.

“… If you come into our house, you better be ready to fight. It’s 9,000 against five.”

In a see-saw game, one of the Crazies faints and EMTs rush into the stands.

Late in the game, 18-year-old freshman Dereck Lively II blocks his eighth shot of the game. The place erupts.

Duke wins, 63-57, and the entire team runs the length of the court high-fiving the Crazies.

“It’s hard to see, it’s hard to breathe, it’s hard to move,” says Betts, the Duke Cookie Monster. “It’s because it’s so packed in there and everybody is screaming at the top of their lungs.

“I’ve had days where I was literally ill in the head the next day because we were screaming so loud, but it’s all worth it.”

An Alumni Base to Fill Cameron; A Network to Serve Our World

Did you know? Sanford has enough alumni to fill the entirety of Cameron Indoor Stadium. That image is impressive – almost 10,000 Sanford graduates linked together.

Even more impressive: the work our alumni are doing in our communities, our cities and throughout the world to improve policy and create a better future – with people at the center.

On May 10, our newest alumni had the opportunity to learn directly from one of the thousands of Sanford changemakers. Alumni graduation speaker Ryan Smith MPP’14 is leading a new branch of public safety in Durham that is reimagining how to respond with greater compassion to 911 calls. In his graduation speech, Ryan said he seeks to stay proximate to the people he is serving. He talked about understanding of others to understand policy. He emphasized action when others need your help.

“Sometimes, you will sense an opportunity, but it will feel just out of reach because the problem you see will, on paper, not be your responsibility. It will not be under your control or maybe only a very small part of it will be. People aware of this problem will point to others who are responsible for it, and you will face a decision point. What are you going to do about it?” Ryan asked.

Ryan encouraged our graduates to be leaders in the face of constant adversity, to stand for something, to stand for others. It can be daunting when you think you are standing alone.

The good news is our graduates are not alone. They are part of a network unlike any other. With an alumni network large enough to fill a stadium, anything is possible.

Metaphorically, there are times when we face a road ahead of us that is uncertain. In Denmark, we have a concept called the “ red thread ” that means there is a throughline to your life. Although policy is very rarely a straight line, all of our graduates have a red thread in their lives: the connection to Sanford.

More than 50 years ago, former Duke President and our founder Terry Sanford shared a vision for a better world. The vision for what would become the Sanford School had a positive impact on Duke. Sanford faculty pioneered a culture of collaborative, interdisciplinary, problem-oriented research to tackle the thorniest questions in society.

Today, Sanford has almost 10,000 alumni changemakers continuing this mission. We celebrate all of our Sanford alumni, including our  newest 2024 graduates .

Section 2 reviews, upper level.

Sideline Sections  For non-students, the best seats at Cameron Indoor Stadium are located in sections 6, 7, 14 and 15. These sections give fans the best view of the entire court. Each section includes about 15 rows of seating with Row A being the closest row to the front of the section. Sections 14 and 15 are located behind the Cameron Crazies, while sections 6 and 7 face the Crazies and are on the side where the players benches are located. All seating in these sections is typical stadium seating with a back. End Sections   The cheapest tickets at Cameron Indoor Stadium are typically found in upstairs sections 2, 3, 10 and 11. These sections are located behind the basket with 10 and 11 being on the North side of the stadium and 2 and 3 being on the south side. The biggest complaint with these seats is in the last ten rows (rows F and higher) where you have to look through the suspended basket to see the other side of the court. This primarily affects the seats in the middle of higher rows, but isn't of much concern for fans seated in Rows A-E or fans seated on or near the aisle.  Corner Sections   Corner seating upstairs generally comes with a discount compared to sideline seating upstairs. Never-the-less, with only fifteen rows of seating, there aren't too many bad seats at Cameron Indoor Stadium -- even in the corner sections. These seats give you a very good full-court view at a good height and aren't nearly as expensive as seats just a section or two over. The first row in each section is labeled A and all of the seats are traditional stadium seats with a back.

Q2 Stadium, Austin, Texas

The basics:  The stadium opened three years ago and has a capacity of 20,738. The first game at the ground was between USWNT and Nigeria. Angel City attacker Christen Press scored the first goal there, in a 2-0 win.

Food and drink: There are concession stands located in almost every corner with local restaurants and cuisines. If Texas BBQ is your thing, CM Smokehouse, Valentina’s Tex-Mex BBQ, and Slovacek’s, a Texas-Czech fusion food stand, sound particularly appetising. Bulleit Bar, Crown Royal and Karbach Draft are the pick of the bars.

How about some trivia? Q2 Stadium was the first soccer stadium in the world to have “just walk out” technology. Operated by Amazon, the “just walk out” gates allow fans to scan their credit cards at the point of entry, pick up their desired beverages (local Austin craft beers are recommended) and… just walk out. No checkout or scanning process is required.

What you can do nearby:  For lunch, we recommend Franklin or Interstellar for Texas BBQ. Then, get pre-game drinks at Hopsquad Brewery or Celis Brewery near the stadium. For dinner, try Tex-Mex, where Matt’s El Rancho is a local favorite. And if you’re planning on taking the celebrations into the night, go to a live music spot like White Horse or Broken Spoke.

How to get there using public transportation: CapMetro, the public transportation provider in Austin, increases service on matchdays and the stadium is generally accessible from most parts of the city. The Metro Red Line train is considered the best option from downtown Austin. Fans can take the train to McKalla Station, just outside Q2 Stadium.

Which games will be hosted there?

  • June 30: Venezuela v Jamaica (Group B)
  • July 2: Costa Rica v Paraguay (Group D)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

The basics:  Oh lord, won’t you buy me… a stadium worth $1.6billion. This glitzy multi-purpose arena opened in August 2017 and can hold up to 71,000 people. The biggest event it has hosted so far is Super Bowl LIII in 2018, when the New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady, beat LA Rams, 13-3.

Food and drink : For fans of Top Chef, Gamechanger is a must-visit. Kevin Gillespie, a finalist in the sixth season of the show, is a lifelong Falcons fan and opened Gamechanger on the 200 concourse western end zone of the stadium in 2017. He serves food he describes as “junk food of a higher quality”.

Trivia : On July 22, 2021, Kanye West held a listening event for his album Donda at the stadium. Afterwards, West lived in the stadium for two weeks until the album’s completion, converting locker-room facilities into temporary recording spaces and living areas.

What you can do nearby:  The stadium is in the heart of downtown Atlanta. You can take a walk to Centennial Olympic Park, a 22-acre park built for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Georgia Aquarium, around a 15-minute walk, is the largest aquarium in the United States.

How to get there using public transportation : MARTA, a city-wide rail and bus system, provides two stops on the stadium’s doorstep. For $2.50 (plus a one-time Breeze card purchase of $2), fans can avoid the added costs of driving. The closest station to Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center Station.

  • June 20: Argentina v Canada (Group A)
  • June 27: Panama v United States (Group C)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina

The basics: The stadium opened in 1996 and can hold 74,867 people. Before Bank of America purchased its naming rights in 2004, it was called the Ericsson Stadium, named after the Swedish telecommunications company founded by Lars Magnus Ericsson, the inventor of Bluetooth.

Food and drink: Angeline’s is a highly-rated Italian restaurant half a mile away, known for its pasta and wood-fired pizzas. If that does not whet your appetite, Fin & Fino is a great spot to grab seafood within a 10-minute walk from the stadium.

Trivia: The stadium is built on top of Good Samaritan Hospital, which was built in 1891 and was the first private hospital in North Carolina to serve Black patients in the racially segregated American South.

What you can do nearby:  If you’re a NASCAR fan or simply want to learn more about America’s favourite motorsport, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is under a mile from the stadium. Tours begin at 1pm and last approximately two hours.

How to get there using public transportation : To arrive closest to the stadium, catch the LYNX Blue Line light rail and disembark at Stonewall Station or Carson Station — both are around a 15-minute walk. Several bus routes also provide easy access.

  • July 10: Semi-final
  • July 13: Third-place play-off

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

The basics: With a soccer capacity of 80,000, expandable to over 100,000 for major events, the AT&T Stadium is undoubtedly one of America’s flagship sports venues. It hosted the 2011 Super Bowl, where the Packers, led by Aaron Rodgers, defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in front of 103,219 spectators.

Food and drink: Concession stands throughout offer burgers and hot dogs, while the Sausage Supreme is the pick of the options for Texas BBQ lovers.

Trivia: AT&T Stadium is commonly referred to as Jerry World after Jerry Jones, the eccentric owner of the Dallas Cowboys. When the stadium opened, the big screen, otherwise known as the Jerrytron, was the largest HD television in the world.

What you can do nearby: Arlington is home to all 212 acres of the Six Flags Over Texas theme park. It opened in 1961 and is the first amusement park in the Six Flags chain. The park has 45 attractions, including 13 rollercoasters.

How to get there using public transportation: Unfortunately, there is no direct train connection from downtown Dallas to the AT&T Stadium. There is a train line that runs from Victory Station in Dallas to Centrepoint Station in Irving, nearer to Arlington. From there, a taxi is estimated to cost around $20. If you plan on taking a rental car, note that parking prices have exceeded $75 for other events. Shuttles run frequently from nearby Arlington hotels, dropping passengers off next to the entrance.

  • June 21: Peru vs Chile (Group A)
  • June 23: United States vs Bolivia (Group C)
  • July 5: Quarter-final – Group B winner vs Group A runner-up

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas

The basics: While the Houston Texans have not had much post-season success, the NRG Stadium has played a big role in the NFL playoffs. The stadium, which opened in 2002, has hosted two Super Bowls (2004 and 2017), with the New England Patriots winning both.

NRG also held the Copa America Centenario semi-final between Argentina and the United States in 2016. Argentina won 4-0, with Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi on the scoresheet.

Food and drink: The stadium has 38 permanent food stands, 32 bars, 11 grab-and-go shops and over 100 portable stalls, so a lack of choice will not be an issue.

For fans looking for some Texas BBQ goodness, Killen’s BBQ, available at sections 323 and 351, is a local favourite owned by Ronnie Killen, a native Houstonian. El Tiempo is a popular spot for Tex-Mex, dishing out fajitas, tacos and nachos, while Hugo’s brings the Mexican flavour at an upscale level.

Trivia: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is held annually in March for three weeks. About a week before the rodeo starts, around 100 trucks arrive at the stadium carrying around 5,500 cubic yards of dirt — each cubic yard measures close to 200 gallons — which workers spend two days preparing ahead of the event.

What you can do nearby: The Astros, Houston’s MLB franchise, are at home to the Baltimore Orioles on the same day that Mexico plays Jamaica. The start times are five hours apart, so if you’re looking for something to do ahead of the game, why not head to see some baseball?

How to get there using public transportation: Fans can catch the METRORail Red Line from any of the downtown stations and take it south towards the NRG Park station. If you have rented a car for the trip, drive to the Fannin South Station one stop before NRG Park for park-and-ride.

Which games are going to be played there:

  • June 22: Mexico vs Jamaica (Group B)
  • June 24: Colombia vs Paraguay (Group D)
  • July 4: Quarter-final – Group A winner vs Group B runner-up

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

The basics: Arrowhead represents American sporting heritage. Opened in 1972, it is the long-time home of the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs and has a capacity of 76,416. Away from sport, it was the opening venue for the “Victory Tour” when Michael Jackson reunited with the Jackson 5 in 1984 after the success of his Thriller album.

Food and drink: Despite Arrowhead being one of the older stadiums hosting a Copa America match, its concession stands are modern and diverse. @ArrowheadEats is a useful resource on X that tracks all the newest and tastiest options at the Kansas City stadium.

Trivia: Arrowhead is officially the loudest stadium in the world. After initially setting the Guinness World Record during the Chiefs and Oakland Raiders in 2013 with a 137.5 decibel racket, the Seattle Seahawks fans at Century Link Field (137.6 dB) claimed the title two months later. However, the Chiefs reclaimed the title at Arrowhead in 2014, hitting 142 dB.

What you can do nearby: If you’re planning on staying around in Kansas City for a few days, why not take in some MLB baseball at Kauffman Stadium, yards away from Arrowhead?

Kauffman is the home of the two-time World Series winners KC Royals, who will host the Tampa Bay Rays on July 2 and 3. The Royals have started the season strongly and could be a dark horse to go deep in the playoffs.

How to get there using public transportation: According to The Athletic’s resident Kansas City expert and U.S. managing soccer editor Alex Abnos, there is a bus that stops nearby, but the Kansas City bus service (RideKC) is notoriously unreliable. If you’re looking for a hassle-free journey to the stadium, the best bet is to rent a car, make a friend who has a car, or use a rideshare service (Lyft/Uber).

Which games are going to be played there:

  • July 1: United States v Uruguay (Group C)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kansas

The basics: Opened in 2011, Children’s Mercy Park was one of several soccer-specific stadiums built around the turn of the decade to help grow MLS. Since moving to its new home, Sporting Kansas City has won three U.S. Open Cup titles and an MLS Cup. The USMNT has played at this venue on 10 occasions, most recently drawing 0-0 with Uruguay in June 2022.

Food and drink: If you desire something more adventurous than the average stadium fare, why not head to World’s Kitchen in section 117 to try the chicken curry or curry tots? El Capitan offers Mexican options in section 122 if Indian food does not appeal.

Trivia: Based on the concept of stop-motion photography, the stadium was designed to capture the motion of the body and the ball. The building’s exterior of repeating angular metal fins represents athleticism and movement on the field. Or so they say, anyway.

What you can do nearby: To fully engross yourself in the soccer spirit, why not hit up a Footgolf venue near the stadium? If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s pretty much what you’d expect: golf played with your feet (and a soccer ball). The Heart of America golf course is a 30-minute drive from the stadium and offers 18 holes to challenge your friends (or pre-game ahead of the match).

How to get there using public transportation: As with Arrowhead, there is a bus that stops nearby, but the Kansas City bus service (RideKC) is notoriously unreliable, so best to use a car or rideshare service (Lyft/Uber).

  • June 25: Peru vs Canada (Group A)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

The basics: Opened in 2020 for a whopping $5.5bn, SoFi Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built and it might be the best. It is located in the Inglewood neighbourhood of Los Angeles, close to LAX airport and famous west LA beaches, including Santa Monica and Venice. It has a capacity of around 70,000 and hosted the Super Bowl in 2022.

Food and drink: To avoid long queues inside the stadium, we recommend sampling Inglewood’s rich selection of international cuisines before the game. Blessed Tropical Cuisine is one of several excellent Jamaican restaurants in the area and La Fonda of Inglewood is known as one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in west LA.

Trivia: If you are willing to sacrifice a seat to be closer to the action, arrive early for the best standing-room spots. Standing-room tickets are sold in the 300 and 400 levels, but you may be able to snag a space with a seat in the nosebleeds if you get in position well before kick-off.

What you can do nearby: If you’ve booked a few days in LA, we recommend visiting the Getty Center for the views and museum. If you’re travelling with a family, Disneyland and Universal Studios will deliver for all.

How to get there using public transportation: Take the Metro C Line and disembark at Hawthorne/Lennox Station, where Metro typically offers an Express shuttle service to SoFi Stadium on game day . If you have rented a car, you can park at this station for free and take the $4 round-trip ride to SoFi.

  • June 24: Brazil vs Costa Rica (Group D)
  • June 26: Venezuela v Mexico (Group B)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Allegiant Stadium, Paradise, Nevada

The basics: Located in the middle of the world’s most famous resort city, Allegiant Stadium is one of America’s most unique sports venues. The 61,000-seater stadium, which opened in 2020, hosted this year’s Super Bowl.

Food and drink: Among masses of options at the stadium, Food Network icon Guy Fieri has translated some of his favourite dishes into stadium food at Tailgate Kitchen and Bar. The standouts on the menu include: the Motley Que pulled pork sandwich, the Prime Time Kobe burger and the Tailgater Trash Can nachos.

For drinks, try a cocktail designed by mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim. His specials include the Bloody Fist Mary, Silver & Black margarita with Casamigos, and the Chucky with Gentleman Jack.

Trivia: Allegiant Stadium has a roll-in field tray mechanism, which allows a grass field to be brought in ahead of matches and taken out afterwards to receive sunlight. The mechanism weighs 19 million pounds and is powered by 72 motors.

What you can do nearby: They say a trip to Vegas isn’t complete without a flutter at a casino, but if gambling isn’t your thing, why not head to the Sphere? It is hosting the Darren Aronofsky “Postcard from Earth” experience during Copa America and you can snag tickets for around $100.

How to get there using public transportation: The stadium is within walking distance of all the major hotels in Vegas, but it may not be pleasant in the height of summer.

Download rideRTC on your smartphone, where you can buy a two-hour bus pass for $6. A 24-hour pass is $8, and a three-day pass costs $20. The bus operates the Vegas strip 24 hours a day.

  • June 26: Ecuador v Jamaica (Group B)
  • June 28: Paraguay v Brazil (Group D)
  • July 6: Quarter-final – Group C winner v Group D runner-up

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida

The basics: It’s been a heck of a long time since the Miami Dolphins reached the Super Bowl, but the NFL has used the Hard Rock Stadium six times to host its showpiece event. This year’s Copa America final will join a long list of major events across sports and entertainment to be held in Miami Gardens.

Food and drink: Miami is known for its Cuban population and influence, so why not try Cafe Versailles in Section 347 to get a taste of the local cuisine? Versailles has been feeding the city since 1971 and the classic Cuban sandwich with a side of plantain chips or an order of empanadas is recommended.

Chef Creole is another great option in Section 117. The concession stand run by Wilkinson Sejour is known for its comfort food, with jambalaya, stewed chicken, and oxtail among the extensive selection.

Trivia: According to reports, the stadium was built on land that was once the burial ground for the South Florida Tequesta, a Native American tribe.

Consequently, some fans have blamed the “Curse of the Tequesta” for the Miami Dolphins’ failure to win a Super Bowl since leaving the Orange Bowl for the Hard Rock Stadium.

What you can do nearby: Miami Carol City Park is delightful in the summer, with its playgrounds, picnic pavilions and large green areas. If you’re attending the game with family and young children, this is a perfect spot to relax before and after the action.

How to get there using public transportation: There is no public transportation system to the stadium, so you will need to drive or take a taxi.

Taxis are allowed to drop off and pick up at Gate 4, while rideshare services (Lyft, Uber etc.) are required to pick up and drop off at Lot 42 on NW 27th Ave. This lot is a 20-minute walk away from the stadium.

  • June 21: Uruguay v Panama (Group A)
  • June 29: Argentina v Peru (Group A)
  • July 14: Final

MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

The basics… This 82,500-capacity stadium has seen pretty much everything from a sports and entertainment perspective. It has hosted the Super Bowl, Wrestlemania (twice) and even a Mass service held by Pope John Paul II. It was also the venue for the Copa America Centenario final in 2016, where Chile beat Argentina 4-2 on penalties.

Food and drink: You cannot go wrong with Stadium Gyro in section 134. Tacos Raqueros is another solid option. They have a variety of taco and burrito options, with the pork a local favourite. Make sure to ask for the salsa verde.

Trivia: MetLife Stadium will host the 2026 World Cup final. The venue beat out SoFi and AT&T for the privilege to host the world’s biggest sports event.

What you can do nearby: You’re only a short ride away from New York City, so you can spend most of your time there before the game. If you want to grab a pre-game bite, Chelsea Market food hall is a one-stop shop for international cuisine. The Los Tacos No 1 stall is always popular, but be prepared to queue.

Central Park remains among New York’s best summer attractions, which is also very close to several museums and galleries.

How to get there using public transportation: If you’re coming from New York City, take the NJ Transit train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction. Be sure that you’re taking the train to Secaucus, which are marked “SEC”.

Once you arrive at Secaucus, you’ll see departure boards that will direct you to the correct platform to catch the train to the stadium.

  • June 25: Chile v Argentina (Group A)
  • June 27: Uruguay v Bolivia (Group C)
  • July 9: Semi-final

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando, Florida

The basics: The soccer-specific stadium opened in 2017 and has a capacity of 25,500. It has hosted six USMNT matches and held the 2019 MLS All-Star game against La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

Food and drink: If you love Mexican food, try the Black Rooster Taqueria in Section 24. Achiote Pork and Black Rooster Asada are great options, but our pick is the Chicken Tinga. If you’re after a burger, the “Drunken Monk” at Teak Neighborhood Grill (Section 18/19) is among the best this stadium has to offer.

Trivia: It was the first MLS venue to have an all-standing stand. The safe-standing structure was designed to resemble the Victoria Ground, Stoke City’s former stadium.

The 3,811-capacity section is occupied by the main supporters’ groups, the Iron Lion Firm and The Ruckus. They have dubbed this section “The Wall”, in homage to Borussia Dortmund’s famous Yellow Wall.

What you can do nearby: Are you serious? Go to Disney World and Universal Studios, of course! Universal Studios is around a 15-minute drive from the stadium and is home to attractions including the Hogwarts Express and the Revenge of the Mummy rollercoaster.

For Disney World, it’s around another 15 minutes in the same direction. As well as the traditional Disney classics, you can visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios, where the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Rise of the Resistance attractions await.

How to get there using public transportation: The stadium is in downtown Orlando, so it will likely be within walking distance from your hotel. If you’re staying slightly further out, SunRail is your best bet. Church Street Station is only a short walk from the stadium, so ensure your train stops there.

What games are going to be played there:

  • June 29: Chile v Canada (Group A)
  • July 1: Bolivia v Panama (Group C)

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

The basics: Since opening in 2006, the 72,200-seater stadium has been a prominent destination for America’s most important sporting events. It has hosted three Super Bowls (XLII, XLIX and LVII) and College Football National Championship games.

Food and drink : There are plenty of delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend going to the stadium with a full stomach.

NakedQ BBQ offers traditional BBQ sandwiches and platters with pulled meats, brisket, ribs and delicious sides. State 48 Funk House Brewery offers broadly similar options but with a wider beer selection.

Six speciality cocktails are available inside the stadium and we recommend the Valley of the Sun Peach Breeze and the Desert Heat.

Trivia: State Farm Stadium kicked off Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour in 2023 and Glendale symbolically renamed itself “Swift City” to honour the occasion.

What you can do nearby: The stadium typically holds a “Preflight Party” before Cardinals matches on the stadium’s south lawn, suitable for the whole family.

This area has a DJ, food and drink, activities and, perhaps most importantly in the summer months, plenty of shade.

How to get there using public transportation: Unfortunately, there is little infrastructure to service fans planning to visit the stadium on public transportation. If you are unable to rent a car, your best bet is to get a taxi/rideshare from Phoenix to Glendale and make your way to the stadium from that area on foot.

  • June 28: Colombia v Costa Rica (Group D)
  • June 30: Mexico v Ecuador (Group D)
  • July 6: Quarter-final – Group D winner vs Group C runner-up

can i visit cameron indoor stadium

Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

The basics: Located around one hour from San Francisco, Levi’s Stadium is the Bay Area’s sporting mecca. It hosted Super Bowl 50 in 2016, where the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in front of a capacity crowd of 71,008, as well as other major sporting events, including Wrestlemania 31.

Food and drink: If you’re after traditional sports grub, look no further than Scratch Kitchen’s Nashville Hot Chicken Slider, crispy tenders and tortilla chip-style fries. For something more exotic, try the Ahi Tuna tapas or the Steakhouse “Tomahawk” boards.

Trivia: There’s an organically maintained farm on the stadium’s rooftop. It is the first rooftop farm on an NFL stadium and grows around 40 different crops, including tomatoes, peppers and edible flowers. The vegetables are used in dishes served in the stadium’s concession stands.

What you can do nearby: California’s Great America is a 112-acre theme park located an eight-minute walk away from Levi’s Stadium. It falls into the traditional category of amusement parks, but there are enough modern rollercoasters to keep thrill-seekers entertained.

For tech heads, the Intel Museum is within a 30-minute walk (or 20-minute ACE ride) of the stadium. It has exhibits of Intel’s products and history and plenty of interactive facilities for children.

How to get there using public transportation: You can ride the VTA light rail to the stadium. The closest stations are the Great America station (located just west of Levi’s) and the Lick Mill station to the east.

For patrons attending from San Francisco, VTA offers a dedicated shuttle bus service to the stadium from the Warm Springs BART station. Warm Springs can be reached on the BART green line from the Embarcadero station in downtown San Francisco.
