Description

This zoo which opened up in 1866 is considered to be one of the oldest zoos in the world! It houses over 500 mammals, 700 birds and 1,500 reptiles and fish.

The Budapest Zoo is open every day around the year. Last entry to the Zoo is an hour before closing time  and animal houses close half an hour before closing time. The opening hours of public and national holidays are the same as on weekends of the actual period opening hours. The Magic Mountain’s opening hours is different from the zoo.

Due to its central location, you can get to Budapest Zoo easily in several ways.

We advise you to avoid busy traffic and parking difficulties: hop on a bike or use the public transport. (The Széchenyi Fürdő underground stop is only 3 minutes walk.)

Budapest zoo & botanical garden, fun for the whole family.

A place where regardless of age, everyone finds something entertaining! In Budapest Zoo (Fővárosi Állat- és Növénykert) you can see

• around 1050 animal species from the African savannah to the arctic area, and
• more than 2 000 plant species.

All animals live within conditions similar to their original habitat.

The Magic Hill/Varázshegy is a wondrous indoor exhibition hall on 3 000 sqm and several levels with

Small sandy dessert area, tiny forest, seaside, lakes, rock cave provide real homes for the inhabitants of the zoo, who really look well taken care of.

The Amusement Park next door closed in 2013 – the area has been given over to the Zoo.

Two new interactive parks are being developed here:

• the Fairytale Park (Mesepark): a story park with tame animals, play house, animal patting area, and a modern bird hospital that gives insight into the animal rescure work.
• strong>Pannon Park (planned opening: in two phases: 2018 and 2019): a modern exhibition area evoking the life in the ancient Pannon wilderness in spacious paddocks and a state-of-the-art indoor park, called biodome.

A Bit of Zoo History

As one of the oldest zoos in the world Budapest Zoo looks back on great past and many of its monuments witnessed historic events.

It opened in 1866 as a private institution. The city took over the place at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries and started an impressive development.

The most remarkable buildings of the zoo were established at that time:

• the India-inspired Elephant House (by Kornél Neuschloss) with a look-out tower at its top
• the elephant head at the main entrance
• the nearly 100-year old artificial Small and Great Rocks
• the animal houses by Károly Koós

Most parts of the zoo underwent reconstructions during the decades. Some sections are being restored now and in the coming years too.

Two new aviaries , the Papuan Aviary and the Parrot Haven, have been added in 2006.

The polar bears and sea-lions moved to their renewed home called Arctic Panorama in June 2006.

Top Attractions in the Zoo and Botanical Garden

• The Elephant House to the right of the entrance has a small tower at its top where you can get a beautiful panorama view of the City Park.
• To the left of the entrance stands the Palm Tree House & Aquarium , home to lush tropical plants, orchids, birds, and reptiles and exotic fishes.
• For the little ones the animal petting area is the most fascinating place within the zoo. They can caress and feed the goats, sheep. See our photos about our 2-year old son’s encounter with the animals.

• in the Small Rock you can have a meal in the cave restaurant
• You can see native Hungarian farm animals in original-looking farm buildings: swallow bellied woolly pigs, bold necked hens, spotted cattle, mudi dogs, cikta sheep, hucul horse.

• the Majomvilág (World of Apes) gives home to gorillas, lemurs, mangabeys
• kids can climb, crawl, slide in a superb and child-friendly playground

Should you get peckish during your exploration of the zoo, you can get snacks, ice cream and other refreshments from the vendors.

The Gundel Patisserie is highly recommended for delicious cakes and ice cream.

Note: The cashier closes 1 hour before the closing time of the Zoo!

TIP: Time your visit on a weekday. Monday is perfect because many things are closed on Monday but not the Zoo. On weekends local families and tourists overrun the place.

Fairytale Park (Mese Park)/Pannon Park

A new, awesome exhibition site named Pannon Park is being built on the site of the former Amusement Park.

It will transport visitors back to ancient times when

• elephants and apes lived in the Carpathian basin and
• sharks swam in the sea once occupying the area.

Attractions and activities of the Pannon Park (you can go on a semitropical boat tour for example) will open in two stages: in 2018 and 2019 .

The games and activities of the Holnemvolt Park (temporarily renamed to Fairytale Park/Mese Park) will also be renewed.

Some of the games from the old Amusement park will be open o the public only in 2018-2019:

• the heritage merry-go-round,
• the wooden roller coaster and
• the fairy tale boat.

The rest of the park will open in 2017.

Other Attractions Near the Zoo

You can devote a whole day to the City Park and its neighbourhood.

I recommend that you combine

• visiting the Zoo with
• a trip to the Fairytale Park (Mese Park) next door,
• have lunch in Bagolyvár Restaurant or at Robinson’s (make sure you book a table at both places, click to read more about these restaurants ).

After lunch go rowing (ice skating in winter) on the Park’s lake then view the fairy-tale like Vajdahunyad Castle .

Do spare some time to take a look at the grandiose monuments at Heroes’ Square ,.

If you have time drop by the two museums flanking the two sides of the square:

• the Hall of Art, both have remarkable art collections.

Events, Festivals in the Zoo

Night walks.

On specific days you can Take a Night Walk in the Zoo between 18.30 – 22.00. It’s a good opportunity out about the Zoo’s and its inhabitants nightlife secrets which you almost certainly can not see in daylight!

Professional guides lead you through the park and you can take a peak behind the glass walls and runways.

During the walk you’ll be treated to a light dinner of sandwiches and drinks (cold and hot.

Carnival in the Zoo, February

Entry is only 100 HUF for children under 14 yrs if they come dressed in costume or carnival mask.

The Zoo will have a festival over the first weekend of February with fun programs in the Varázshegy/Magic Hill between 10. 00 – 16.00 Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

• On 2nd February, at 11.00 you can join the carnival parade. You can also watch special animal shows each day of the event.
• On 3rd and 4th February the Bóbita Band provides the music on the costume bal l starting at 12.30 (venue: Magic Hill).

Note: February 02. is a unique date in Hungary similar to the Groundhog’s Day observed in the USA and Canada. In Hungary the question is whether the bear sees its shadow or not?

According to folk tradition if the the answer is yes , (the sun is shining) the bear goes back to sleep and winter lasts 40 more days. If the answer is no (the sky is overcast) then it stays out to play and spring is just around the corner.

Budapest Zoo

Considered by many the most beautiful  zoo  in Europe, this structure is located just a few steps away from Heroes’s Square and behind the Museum of Fine Arts. The zoo consist of a series of appealing buildings built between 1909 and 1912, as well as a monumental gateway with stone elephants supporting an arch topped with a ring of polar bears. Tall trees will greet you at the entrance of this enchanted place, which is home to more than a thousand species of animals.

The breathtaking  Elephant House  is characterized by blue domes and a minaret, which resemble an Ottoman mosque. Also the smaller animals houses are full of charm; they were designed during the reconstruction works of 1900. The giraffe house has African influences, the crocodile house has Indian vibes, while the Australian house takes inspiration from old popular houses in the Transylvania region.

Budapest zoo is one of the world’s oldest zoo; it opened its doors in 1866.

One of these is the surroundings of Heroes’ Square , where you can visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Széchenyi Bath , the Capital Circus of Budapest, and the City Park, which is the largest inner-city park of Budapest, where visitors can go ice skating in the winter, and boat riding in the summer. And if that weren’t enough, the topic of this article, the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden is also just a stone’s throw away from Heroes’ Square. But what is it about this zoo that makes people often dub it as one of the greatest in Europe? In this article, we’ll do our best to tell you why the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is the perfect family-friendly holiday attraction .

Budapest Zoo is a happy place!

Nowadays zoos tend to have a precarious reputation. Keeping animals captive has been a debate forever: on the one hand, these wild animals are deprived of their right to live in their natural habitat; on the other, it’s the safest option for many endangered species . One thing’s for sure: when you see the runways of Budapest Zoo , you won’t be likely to worry about the living conditions of the animals, as their compounds share a staggering 18-hectare area. Every breathing creature has its own living space which fits its natural habitat and serves all its needs. Moreover, all runways are under constant revision and development, so it’s very likely you’ll see some construction works during your visit. As for the species, Budapest Zoo has one of the most diverse collection of wild animals in Europe with more than 850 species , including 131 mammal species . From the largest beasts such as polar bears , hippos , rhinos , and all kinds of big cats , to hundreds of birds and reptile species , even exotic cockroaches found their home here. With an average of 1.1 million people visiting to see our planet’s gorgeous creatures every year, the zoo is one of the most visited places in Budapest. As is the case in most zoos, the main attractions are the apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) in the Ape House and elephants in the Elephant House – which has a newcomer by the way, as Sam, the elephant baby was born in April 2021. Be sure to see him when you visit Budapest Zoo!

Fantastic beasts and where to find them in Budapest Zoo

Most places in the zoo are called ‘houses’, and they’re named after geographic locations such as the Australian House , the Madagascar House , and the Norwegian House , or, as we mentioned before, the type of animals that live there (Giraffe House, Buffalo House, Crocodile House etc.). There is also a separate, dark house for nocturnal and venomous animals, which is not recommended for the fainthearted! The zoo also has an enormous playground for kids , so if marveling at the magnificent animals isn’t enough to tire them out, you’ll know where to take them. However, we still haven’t reached the end of our list: for those who like to learn while having fun, an artificial mountain called ‘ Magic Mountain ’ was built in the middle of the zoo boasting 16 exhibition halls which serve mainly educational purposes. Cavemen, dinosaurs, ocean life and cosmos exhibitions can all be found here, making this attraction a popular destination for elementary school trips. 

Animals are not the only creatures you can admire in Budapest Zoo

As the name Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden implies, the venue does not only have a collection of animals on display, but about 2000 different plant species , subspecies, and varieties as well. A crucial part of the botanical collection is the so-called dendrological one, aka the multitude of trees in the park. The trees, some of which are more than 100 years old which create a mini forest gives the zoo a truly characteristic atmosphere. And if you’re a tree enthusiast like us, you’ll have to see the Japanese garden with its iconic cherry blossom trees, too. In addition, the Palm House features numerous tropical plants such as banana trees, huge fan palms, sago palms, and many more.  

Special activities for special guests at Budapest Zoo

The Budapest Zoo offers dozens of special activities besides seeing wild animals. There are fixed feeding times every day for many animals such as the gorillas, lions, and crocodiles, as well as playful shows with seals and elephants . If you’d like to see some nocturnal activity, visit the venue on the Night of Zoos , which is a special event at the end of every summer. The zoo also started an adoption program 20 years ago, which is basically a protégé program where in exchange for fully or partially covering the costs of a particular animal, you can become a foster parent on paper – so, no, you can’t take a kangaroo home for real, unfortunately. Sorry about the bad news. As a modern, 21st century business, Budapest Zoo is doing its best to keep up with the trends, so they developed their own mobile app which comes in handy when you’re feeling lost in the vast area or trying to figure out when the anteaters are being fed. The zoo’s newly installed interactive tablets also serve the same purpose throughout the place!

General information about Budapest Zoo

The price of an adult entry ticket is 3300 HUF (10 EUR) and a ticket for kids is 2200 HUF (6 EUR), but they have discounted options for families and groups as well. 

Getting there

You can take metro line 1 to Széchenyi-fürdő, or several bus and electric bus (troli) lines (such as 72 or 105) to Állatkerti körút. For a fun entrée, you can also get on a Hop-on Hop-off double-decker sightseeing bus in several locations in the city and get off at Heroes’ Square. From there, it’s only a few minutes of walk in the scenic City Park.
