Wine and Brewery Tours Brewery Tours

Portland is known as “beervana” for a reason: The city is home to a staggering number of breweries, from tiny startups to behemoth operations that long ago lost the term “micro.” Most, if not all, have some sort of brewpub, or at the very least, a tasting room where guests can sample the beers directly from the source; some of them don’t even distribute outside of the taproom. Of course, given precautions currently in place around COVID-19, the city's breweries are currently open for pick-up or delivery only. That doesn't need to stop you from enjoying them; even if you have to drink it in the privacy of your home or hotel room , you can still experience some of the best beer one of America's best beer cities has to offer. Here are our picks for best breweries in Portland, Oregon.

Breakside Brewery Portland

Breakside Brewing Arrow

Breakside's Dekum location isn't where most of its beers are brewed—that would be its Milwaukie location—but it's the homiest of the three breweries, with vibrant polished wood surfaces everywhere and tall, wide booths for groups. There's a good range of beers here—a pilsner, sour, and session beer—but what defines the brewery is its emphasis on the IPA. Its flagship Breakside IPA is a winner, but at the taproom there are often five or six different takes on the hoppy ale, from hazy to fresh-hopped to fruit-infused. They're not always bottled, so a visit to the brewery will allow you to sample the full, rather impressive, gamut.

Wayfinder Beer Portland

Wayfinder Beer Arrow

Unlike the majority of Portland brewpubs, Wayfinder also sports a pretty solid cocktail menu, with some fun items like a Scandinavian negroni made with aquavit (a bold move in a city with so many excellent cocktail bars ). But the real focus is obviously on the beers, and while there are plenty of ales on the menu, the brewery distinguishes itself with its plethora of crisp lagers, including helles, pilsners, and even black lagers on the rotating tap list. It also doesn't skimp on the food side of things. The menu is mostly hearty pub staples, but with a few extras. There's the requisite nachos and burger, but also steak frites, banh mi, mac and beer-cheese with add-ons, roasted beet salads, fried cauliflower, and more. It's equally serviceable for a full dinner or just some snacks to go with the beer.

United States Oregon Portland Brewery Culmination Brewing

Culmination Brewing Arrow

With its wood-topped barrel tables and modestly sized bar, Culmination feels like an old-school microbrewery in the best way, and it has no single defining style of beer; in fact, it's known for its diversity and creativity. You'll be just as pleased with the selection, whether you're looking for a classic Northwestern IPA or for something bold and new—a cucumber sour, say, or a black lime kolsch. Even day to day, the brewery has different offerings, keeping the lineup reliably fresh and innovative. When it comes to food, you can count on the standard pub grub—but the brewery also plays host to a variety of pop-up dinners. It's not always consistent, but there's usually something fun going on here.

United States Oregon Portland Brewery Great Notion Brewing and Barrel House

Great Notion Brewing Arrow

In the sunnier months— which Portland does actually have —the sprawling, gravel-lined patio at Great Notion is the place to be, as guests from all over the Alberta neighborhood sip beers at picnic tables covered by umbrellas. Everyone is here for the beer, whether it's a fruity IPA or tart sour beer: Great Notion was one of the first to hop on the sour bandwagon when it opened, and it's done so with consideration and talent, offering some of the best fruit sours and farmhouse ales around. While the tap list is reason enough to visit, the food makes it a true destination. The brewery offers a punched-up sort of bar menu, with a killer fried chicken sandwich, equally pleasing burger and veggie burger, and rice bowls, salads, and bar snacks.

United States Oregon Portland Brewery Baerlic Brewing Co.

Baerlic Brewing Co. Arrow

With its light wood furniture and bright, modern vibe, Baerlic feels more like a café than your standard brewery; but when it comes to your drink, don't expect a flat white. The brewery looks to the past to inform the present, with beers rooted in the simplicity of malted barley, water, and hops, though they're no means bound by that. Although there's the occasional unconventional beer on the menu, most will be recognizable and straightforward: a super-dry IPA, a Northwest-style pilsner, an imperial stout, or a classic pale ale, all made with consideration and aplomb. This is a perfect kick-off point for a bar crawl around town.

United States Oregon Portland Brewery Cascade Brewing Barrel House

Cascade Brewing Barrel House Arrow

If you're a fan of sour, barrel-aged beers—or you're curious about trying some—there's no better place to visit than the brewery that helped launch the entire movement. Cascade's Buckman District Barrel House is bright and cheery, with windowed-garage doors letting in plenty of natural light, tables with barrel bases, and off-white walls. In summer, the picnic tables out front are packed from opening to close. Year round, the place is filled with the unmistakable aroma of flavorful sour beers resting in casks. Complement one of the signature sours with an imported meat-and-cheese platter, or a traditional brewery dish (beer cheese soup, a Reuben, or a Caesar wrap).

Default

Threshold Brewing Arrow

A smaller place and not quite a destination yet, Threshold is home mostly to neighborhood residents. There's around a dozen beers on tap each day, most of which are ales, though the occasionally crisp lager can be found. The key here is variety, from sours to barley wines, fruit-infused stouts to classic, NW IPAs. Despite the wide selection, each is brewed with considerable care and focus. And while most of the focus is on the beer at Threshold, the snacks are more than an afterthought. Platters of Olympia Provisions charcuterie and cheese plates pair nicely with the pours.

United States Oregon Portland Brewery Ecliptic Brewing

Ecliptic Brewing Arrow

The bustling Ecliptic Brewing, set in a well-renovated garage space in the city's Mississippi district, had cachet before it even opened its doors: Owner John Harris is an icon in the Oregon beer industry, having helped found some of the most influential breweries before taking on a 20-some-year stint as head brewer at Full Sail. After decades in the industry, he finally has his own brewery—and he's using it to make pitch-perfect Northwestern beers, including fun fruit ales, and bright, vivid IPAs. The brewery distinguishes itself from other spots in town by offering a respectable cocktail menu, too (but you really should be drinking the beers).

Price & Hours

  • Facilities 3.0
  • Atmosphere 3.0

Portland is well-known for its craft beers. In fact, there are roughly 70 breweries in the city proper, meaning there are plenty of places to quench your thirst. Though you're welcome to stop by the breweries on your own, taking a guided brewery tour might be a better bet if you're only in Portland for a quick trip (and want someone else to worry about transportation). The tours generally stop at a few different breweries in the city, allowing participants to sample several different kinds of beer. Outings are offered at various days and times; check with a specific operator to learn more. Most tours last around 2 1/2 hours, though City Brew Tours offers experiences that range from three to five hours. Keep in mind that people younger than 21 are not allowed on the tours. For more information, visit the individual tour operators' websites.

City Brew Tours

City Brew Tours , which travels by van, wins accolades from past tourgoers for its knowledgeable guides and wide range of beer samples. For the company's Original Brew Tour, which lasts approximately five hours, the $129 ticket price includes beer samples at four breweries and a meal at either Migration or Ex Novo, two local breweries.

BrewCycle welcomes you to "cycle" on a trolley with other people as it winds its way from brewery to pub on the east or west side of Portland. (You can also rent out a whole trolley for a special occasion.) Tickets range from $20 to $25 per person, depending on the day, and do not include beer.

BeerQuest Walking Tours

If you're looking for a more unique brewery tour, check out BeerQuest Walking Tours' Haunted Pub Tour (about $40 per person), which weaves brewery stops at Kells Irish Pub and Old Town Pizza & Brewing with stories about Portland's paranormal activity and scandalous residents.

Many critics, travelers and locals agree that of all of Portland's parks (and they are numerous), Washington Park is perhaps the best. Washington Park is home to such notable landscaping feats as the Portland Japanese Garden and the International Rose Test Garden , as well as the World Forestry Center, Hoyt Arboretum and several memorials dedicated to pivotal points in Oregon's history.

There are also family-friendly attractions like the Oregon Zoo and the Portland Children's Museum, along with a large playground, soccer fields, tennis courts and an archery range. Just make sure you save plenty of time for a leisurely stroll down one of the many shady paths, which are often decorated with flower displays and fountains.

“Since Oregon is the micro-brew capital of the United States, we thought, why not show off our wares?’ says Jim Long, who leads beer lovers and curious tourists on a four-hour junket to tour Portland's breweries and sample their brews. Portland leads the nation in the concentration of microbreweries per capita, and over 20 of these are scheduled stops for the BrewBus.”

Discover the Pacific Northwest

Self Guided Downtown Portland Brewpubs Tour

Portland, Oregon …aka “Brewtopia” …aka “Munich on the Willamette” …aka “Beervana” . Well known and well loved for the abundance of craft breweries and delicious food it’s a perfect place for a Portland Brewpubs Tour .

After Prohibition demolished the thriving brewery industry in the United Sates, the Pacific Northwest was in the forefront of a brewery revival in the 1980’s and Portland became home to one of the earliest microbreweries. There are now more than 100 breweries in the Portland Metro area ranging from small batch local microbreweries to full service brewpubs and well known large production breweries. It would take weeks to visit all of the breweries in Portland but we are up for the challenge.

To kick off that endeavor we have created a self guided walking tour that takes in a few of the great downtown Portland brewpubs where you can enjoy a brew and a bite Northwest style . As you probably know from experience it’s always a good idea to make food a part of any beer tasting and we feel the best way to do that is to share a menu item at each stop.

Also you won’t need a car for this one which means no need for a designated driver. If you are not staying downtown just take a taxi or transit to the start point and do the same in reverse at the end. The bonus is that you will be walking off some of the delicious indulgences between each course.

Downtown Portland Brewpubs

This Portland brewpub tour touches on some of the city’s favorite downtown neighborhoods . The route will take you from the Historic Waterfront District to the edge of Old Town Chinatown and through the desirable Pearl District so there are plenty of sights and distractions along the way. Luckily Portland’s downtown core is quite compact making it pleasantly walk-able. If you are in Portland as a tourist you may want to add some of these sights to your Portland Brewpub Tour so we’ve noted some suggestions and points on the map at the end of the tour guide.

We have given the Portland Brewpub tour a start and end time to give an idea of how long it will take to try a beer and a bite at each stop including walking time in between. However as most of the stops are open from morning to late evening, seven days a week you really can do it any time of day and of course if you choose not to eat at every venue your time will likely be cut back.

12:30 pm: Pints Brewing Company

pints brewing portland brewpubs

With an enticing selection of beers on tap and a delicious food menu it may be hard to pick just one item of each. May we suggest the Smoked Pork Poutine paired with a Steelbridge Stout or a Humus Plate and Lemon ESB ?

2:00 pm: Rogue Distillery & Public House

Rogue Distillery & Pub

This meeting hall is one of several Rogue establishments in Oregon and as the name suggests it is a distillery as well as a home for Rogue’s many brews. You can take a distillery tour, sample Rogue’s spirits, have a bite to eat and do a tasting from 38 Rogue taps . For food try the Sriracha Stout Tacos with a Bathtub IPA cocktail followed by a Rogue Beer Float .

Fat Head's Brewery Portland Brewpubs

Hopefully you haven’t been tempted into fullness by now since Fat Head’s is home to some big ass chicken wings and “Headwiches” (sandwiches almost as big as your head). The “Southside Slopes” was voted the #5 best sandwich in the USA by Maxim Magazine .

Website: http://www.fatheadsportland.com/

6:00 pm: Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House

Deschutes Brewery Portland Brewpubs

They also have an incredibly creative and delicious food menu. For something share-able we suggest the Northwest Clams with chorizo, cream and Flanders Black Ale or if you have room for a more substantial meal go for the Black Butte Porter Mac & Cheese . Of course it may be time for dessert in which case you can’t pass up the Obsidian Stout Brownie or for a smaller sweet treat a Black Butte Porter Truffle.

Advisor

"Whether you are just visiting, have guests from out of town or live here and just want to have a fun day, a Brewvana Tour is the ticket. There are tour choices, the guides are knowledgeable and lots of fun and of our tasting the beer is what its all about. You usually visit 3 or 4 breweries and will three or four samples at each brewery. Some tours include trying sours and other innovations in brewing. Best part of the trip is you're not driving just enjoying the beer. This had been a go to experience whenever we have out of town guests and even as a local, this. is just plain fun!"

We had a great time in May, cruising through a handful of local craft breweries in Portland. (Baerlic, Unicorn, Migration, etc.)

We spent time learning about beer making, lots of different tastings, and plenty of fun on the bus. There was a wide variety of local beers and had a great meal at the end (best pub nachos ever). Our guide was an excellent source of information (and entertainment). Our favourite tour of the three we did that weekend!

I booked this tour to learn more about the differences in the fermentation process between cider, beer, and whiskey. I had a ton of fun! Everyone at the stops were very informative, and our Brewvana guide was great! Highly recommend this tour, as well as spending additional time (if possible) at any of the stops along the way. Definitely a highlight of my Portland trip. Thanks for the visit!

Q9071POmichelleb

On a recent trip to Portland we decided that we wanted to do a brewery tour and found Brewvana, and so glad that we did. Our guide, Kelene, was informative and fun! She got to know our likes and adjusted to meet the needs of everyone, introducing us to many great beers that some may have never tasted if it wasn’t for her. Thanks for a great day, Kelene!
