Things to do in bregenz, austria + (our 1 day itinerary).

Last updated: 25 June 2023

Bregenz is the capital of the mountainous state of Vorarlberg in Austria. Situated on the western tip of Austria, Bregenz lies at the foot of Pfänder, the most famous lookout point of the region, and has a front row seat on the south-eastern shores of Lake Constance, Europe’s third-largest freshwater lake.

The Romans conquered the Alpine region in 15 BC with the small town of Brigantium established along the river, though officially the founding of Bregenz dates back to around 1250.

There are tonnes of things to do in Bregenz so use this one day in Bregenz itinerary to get you started, though you may find that one day is simply not enough.

MORNING  | ARRIVAL & CHECK IN

Vorarlberg has an efficient, and inexpensive public transit system. As big fans of road trips, one way to navigate this area would be by car, but for the purposes of this itinerary we’re opting for a more sustainable method, arriving by train into the main station of Bregenz and doing the rest on foot.

Arriving by Train?

Confusingly, there is also another station with a similar name, Bregenz Hafen (Bregenz Port/Harbour). If you’re staying closer to the lighthouse (Leuchtturm), or the marina, then this stop may be closer and save you some time.

The first thing you want to do for your one day in Bregenz is get to your accommodation, drop your bags and make a beeline for the city centre to get your bearings.

DAY TIME | BREGENZ CITY FAMILIARISATION

I’m a big fan of starting off any visit with a walking tour. You can self guide around Bregenz, below you will find some recommendations which may be of interest, alternatively, join a private or small group walking tour , or guided city tour , to make the most of your visit.

During the Festive season, the city’s night watchman guides visitors around the medieval city centre.  Check with the local tourist information centre at Rathausstraße 35a, for more information. Check their opening hours prior to visiting as they’re often closed on public holidays.

Find out more about Bregenz’s night watchmen and register to take a tour.

A self guided tour of Bregenz should include the medieval city centre:

Ehre-guta square.

Named after a local legend, Guta, who saved the town from attack by the Appenzeller. If you’re visiting in winter, keep an ear out at 9pm when the night watchmen call out “Ehreguta” to honour her courage and keep the story alive.

Take a stroll up Meissnerstiege to see the Deuring Schlossle, a beautiful manor home which was formerly a luxury hotel. Now only visible from the outside, take a minute to awe at the Baroque tower that is said to have inspired paintings by Turner and Schiele.

The Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall is the city’s largest half-timbered house. In a former life, it was the administrative home of the city until the 19th Century.

Today it’s used by private residents.

The Martinstrurm (St. Martin’s Tower)

This well-preserved Baroque tower with a chapel, 14th-century Gothic frescoes, and roof in the shape of an onion is the largest of its kind in Europe.

bregenz free tour

It was constructed on the original site of a factory which stood at the time the city was founded c. 1250.

If your visit to Bregenz falls between May-October, you’re in for a treat and able to explore the tower on the inside.

Be sure to climb as high as you can for a picturesque panorama over Bregenz and the Oberstadt, the mountains, Pfänder, and Lake Constance from the window gallery.

Walk the Explorers Trail in Bregenz

The city has put together a one-hour walking trail along Stadtsteig which takes visitors up the incline to the Upper Town (Oberstadt) along quaint cobbled streets, past the medieval city walls, the monastery Thalbach, and the parish church of St Gallus.

bregenz free tour

Take some time to explore the boutiques, cafes, and galleries stocked with unique pieces by local artists before making your way back to the town centre.

Tip: At this intersection there’s a quaint local water fountain with potable water to refill your water bottle.

MID MORNING | LAKE CONSTANCE

If the weather is fine, do as I did, and jump at the opportunity to spend some time on the water.

bregenz free tour

One way to explore is on two wheels.  With well developed bike lanes, there is the opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air along one of the most popular routes, from Bregenz to the cities of Lindau and Friedrichshafen in Germany.

Note: the full route is 36km which was too far for this writer. A good alternative is to ride one way and make use of the boat service operated by Vorarlberg Lines to take you back across the Lake to your starting point.

bregenz free tour

It is possible to stand-up paddleboard on the lake, or for a more relaxed activity, I can recommend the peddle-boats around the bay area.  For larger groups, up to six, electric boats are also available.

bregenz free tour

Keen to swim in Lake Constance?

There are public swimming pools (Strandbad) with paddling pools for small children, with slides, and 400m of shoreline.

LUNCH | MARKET

Frequented by locals to source high quality produce for their kitchens, Bregenz is home to a lively weekly market with vendors selling fresh ingredients from across the region.

Vendors are friendly and hospitable, many of whom speak English.

For 2022, the Züg & Sacha series will be operating at the Kornmarktplatz in Bregenz where visitors can procure local artistry, regional delicacies and wine, and sustainable products directly from the producer.

– ALTERNATIVE –

If a sit-down meal with a view to die for is more your thing, head to Pier69 on the waterfront of Lake Constance.

bregenz free tour

Watch as the boats which travel across the Lake dock, keen cyclists and joggers exercise along the promenade while you dine amidst the nautical theme and casual fine dining atmosphere.

Staff are friendly and seemingly bilingual. Everything on the menu was mighty tasty but you can’t go past the regional delicacy of Kässpätzle , served with crispy roasted onions.

AFTERNOON | CULTURE – YOUR CHOICE!

Kunsthaus bregenz.

Culture vultures and lovers of modern art should head to Kunsthaus Bregenz, one of Europe’s leading galleries for contemporary art.

bregenz free tour

With its translucent glass facade, juxtaposed against the older nearby buildings, the KUB as it’s known, is one of Bregenz’s newer funkier landmarks.

Designed by internationally renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, who won the Mies van der Rohe Award and the Pritzker Prize, the KUB opened in 1997. It has fast become one of the town’s most important cultural attractions with the rotating exhibitions featuring outstanding contemporary art attracting visitors from all over the world.

Exhibitions rotate regularly so do check the website before visiting if there’s something specific you wish to see.

Tips:

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Free entry every first friday of the month

Bregenz Festival

Visiting Bregenz in summer?

Be sure to grab tickets and discover the Bregenz Festival.

A cultural highlight of the summer since 1946, the Bregenzer Festspiele, as it’s known locally, is an operatic performance of epic proportions running on a bi-annual cycle, which sees Bregenz transform into a mini Hollywood on water.

Floating elegantly on the third-largest freshwater lake in Central and Western Europe, is the world’s largest floating stage, Seebühne. At the third International Opera Awards ceremony in London in April of 2015, Bregenz Festival won in the category Festival of the Year honouring it as the best music theatre festival.

This internally renowned festival, sees some 200,000 visitors annually travelling from across Europe and the world to see the theatrical masterpieces performed here. Previous shows have included Rigoletto, Carmen, and West Side Story.

If you’re reading this and thinking ‘wow this all looks so familiar’, it may be because you recognise this set from the 2008 James Bond hit Quantum of Solace in which 007 chases villains across the floating stage.

At the time of visiting, crews were breaking down the stage, making way for the next production. If you’re curious to see the current state of the stage, you can check the webcam feed online.

For summer 2022, the show is one of Puccini’s most popular and best-loved operas Madam Butterfly (Madama Butterfly).

MORE THINGS TO DO IN BREGENZ (IF YOU HAVE TIME)

Karren cable car.

Ok, so it’s technically not Bregenz, (it’s within the bounds of Dornbirn, Vorarlberg’s biggest city), but despite that, I think it’s worthy of inclusion in this list.

On a clear day, mountain peaks, the Rhine Valley, and the grandeur of Lake Constance is visible from the top, making it a popular lookout point. A gateway for many beautiful hiking trails which have their starting point here, or the non-hikers can do as I did and enjoy the panorama from the selfie spot and watch the sun set. There’s also a restaurant in the sky at 976 metre above sea level, which offers spectacular views from its terrace.

Lange nacht der museen (Long Night of Museums)

A cultural event in which museums and cultural institutions open late into the evening for one night only. Visitors purchase a pass which grants access to numerous museums in Vorarlberg and the surrounding area with one ticket.

Bregenz last participated on 2 October 2021. It’s expected to return in 2022. If you’re interested, it’s best to keep an eye on this website as more information becomes available.

WHERE TO STAY IN BREGENZ

There are plenty of places to stay in Bregenz , many of which are located along the waterfront, promenade and in the Lower Town (Unterstadt) around Kornmarktplatz.

With such a well organised transit system, it is possible to stay out of Bregenz in places such as Dornbirn and travel into Bregenz by train for the day.

If that suits you, we recommend Hotel Katharinenhof in Dornbirn as a good option.

Back towards the front is the Deuringschlössle , a three-storey manor house dating from the 14th/15th century. You can actually see this better later on during the walking tour.

Directions: Leave Bregenz Old Town by walking down Meißnerstiege, a small lane to the left of the Deuringschlössle which heads underneath a pretty bridge. Head out to the main road and left.

Walking down from the Old Town

Walking path in Bregenz old town, Austira

Just before Thalbach Monastery turn right and up some steps to St. Gallus Church . This is a big church with a little garden and some views of the old town.

Directions: Continue walking out the far side of the church and turn right on the road that bends around the corner. Head up onto the path by the left side of the road.

Beautiful views of Bregenz old town from walking along near the Capuchin Monastery

The Capuchin Monastery is now on your left, with the best views of the Old Town and the Deuringschlössle to your right. Head left on the path around the church, along the little lane and right into Thurn and Taxis Park . There are some really beautiful trees in this park!

Directions: Leave the park in the righthand corner and down a lane to a main road. Head right at the road and then left at the T-junction on Kirchstraße.

Kirchstraße in Bregenz

Walk along Kirchstraße , a cute street with little shops and cafes. Don’t forget to look out for the smallest house in Europe (57 cm wide) at Number 29. Soon you’ll be back in a square in the centre of town, and the main shopping area.

Directions: Head down the street, then right towards where you started to visit the museums.

2. Vorarlberg Museum

Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz, a stop on the walking tour

Key Information: Open Tue-Sun, 10am-6pm (until 8pm on Thursdays) and on Mondays that are public holidays. Tickets are €9 per adult with slight reductions for seniors and youths – under 19 are free.

The Vorarlberg Museum ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) is located between the inner city and the lake. The current building was designed and reopened in 2013 and has won several prizes for its architecture. The design is somehow inspired by Roman Pots from the museum’s collection, though it’s slightly hard to see the link.

Vorarlberg is the westernmost province of Austria and this museum presents its history, culture and geography with over 150,000 artefacts. There are some English descriptions, though not all objects have an English caption. However, most of the museum’s staff are happy to talk to you about the objects in English. There’s a great viewpoint from the panoramic windows on the top floor.

Directions: Just past the Vorarlberg Museum is the distinctive building of the Kunsthaus Bregenz.

3. Kunsthaus Bregenz

Kunsthaus Bregenz, a stop on a self-guided tour of Bregenz, a lakeside town in Austria

Key Information: Open Tue-Sun, 10am-6pm (until 8pm on Thursdays). Tickets are €11 per adult with slight reductions for seniors and youths – under 19 are free.

The Kunsthaus Bregenz building is designed to reflect the changing lights and colours of the day as they reflect off the translucent glass facade. Inside are constantly rotating exhibits of contemporary art from around the world.

Directions: Head towards the lake. Turn slightly left at the main road to cross it and the railway beyond. Then walk right to explore the waterfront.

4. Bregenz Harbour

bregenz free tour

Bregenz Harbour offers great views over the lake and cute boats bobbing in the water. In Roman times, Bregenz was an important place, and still an important place for trade on the lake later on. The harbour at Bregenz was first mentioned in 1294 though now there are some very modern features. The Molo is a pair of newly designed lighthouses, very minimalistic. The park area and steps here are popular spots for sunsets over the lake.

Directions: Walk back from the Molo and continue along the lakefront.

5. Lake Promenade

Waling along the Lake Promenade in Bregenz, Austria

There are more good views from the lakeside promenade. Look out for Fisher’s Pier , a cute old white pier built in 1902. In 1922 it became a launch site for seaplanes, and now it’s a posh bar in the evenings. As you walk around the little harbour area you can see Bregenz Lake Stage ( Website ) in the distance. In summer, operas are performed on this stage, floating over the lake waters, during the Bregenzer Festspiele, or Bregenz Theatre Festival.

Directions: From here, return to the main square. To get to the Pfänderbahn lower cable car station, head out of the far side of the square towards the mountains. Wind your way through the streets and you will reach the cable car station.

6. Pfänderbahn

Views from the top of the Pfänderbahn

Key Information: Open every day 8am-7pm. Tickets are €14.20/8.20 for a return/one-way trip.

One of the most popular things to do in Bregenz is to take the Pfänderbahn, or Pfänder Cable Car, up to the top of a mountain for amazing views over Lake Constance and the Alps. If you want some good exercise, a nice alternative is to hike up and down the Pfänderbahn . This route takes you up through forests and fields, with lovely trees and some nice views of the lake.

Best Places to stay in Bregenz

Budget: Hotel Ibis Bregenz * is a decent hotel in the middle of Bregenz with clean bright rooms and a quiet location.

Comfort: Grand Hotel Bregenz * is a modern hotel with a central location and everything you need for a stay in Bregenz.

This is the end of the Bregenz Walking Tour. If you want to get out on the lake, head back to the harbour and take a boat trip. The Voralberger Lines have hour-long tourist trips on the lake for roughly €13.60 per adult. Alternatively, you can catch a ferry to Lindau or further afield.

For a gentle countryside stroll nearby, check out the Lindau Four Hills Walk or walk around the historic city of nearby Lindau . If you’re looking for more walks and hikes, see our Germany hiking page .

Bregenz in Austria: The Best Things to Do and See

Oh, Bregenz! You really captured us with your beauty and charm. We’ve had the pleasure of visiting Vorarlberg’s state capital on two occasions now. In this blog article, we want to share with you our personal travel tips for Bregenz .

Every year, there is a big festival hosted by Bregenz, right on the lake front. It’s so well known that this annual festival often comes up when talking about Bregenz. It goes without saying that we certainly couldn’t miss the spectacular opera performance ourselves. So we share our experiences and impressions of the Bregenz Festival later in this article.

What else can you do in Bregenz apart from the festival? Read on to find out some of the most beautiful sights we visited and our personal highlights.

1. Travel Guide: Top Things to See and Do in Bregenz

2. the bregenz festival: tips and info, 3. best cafes and restaurants in bregenz, 4. hotel recommendations in bregenz.

Bregenz Oberstadt

Oberstadt – aka. the Upper Town of Bregenz

The Oberstadt is a maze of historic streets , and named rather appropriately too, as this upper part of Bregenz is slightly elevated. We can definitely recommend a walk through this part of Bregenz.

The Upper Town is surprisingly tranquil with the tourist bustle from the lakeshore muffled by distance. If you walk through the Upper Town, then you will notice that there are very few restaurants or shops – but lots of pretty, cobblestone streets and historic timber-framed houses instead.

Attractions in the Oberstadt (Upper Town)

Although the Oberstadt (Upper Town) is already an attraction in itself, there are a few specific places that we would highly recommend you to stop by. First on the list would be the view from Martinsturm Tower (admission: 3.50 Euro). The Martinsturm is the landmark of Bregenz and also home to a museum. It’s well known for its fantastic view over Bregenz and Lake Constance from the last floor.

From Kirchstraße, you also get a great view of the Oberstadt (Upper Town), as well as the very pretty Deuringschlössle (a small castle). You can reach Kirchstraße from the Oberstadt (Upper Town), by simply following the Meißnerstiege and then you’ll pass the parish church of St. Gallus. If you keep going down the Kirchstraße, then you will also reach the narrowest house in Europe (Kirchstraße 29), before finding yourself again in modern Bregenz.

Bregenz Lakeside and Harbour

When you’re in Bregenz, it’s almost impossible not to find yourself by the waterfront on multiple occasions. Here is where you will find the main attraction of the city during festival periods: the magnificent stage situated on the lake. (We’ll share more about that in the next section about the Bregenz Festival).

Of course, there are other things to see by the lakeside too. The Fischersteg is also a popular photo spot. This white pavilion actually houses a bar and on a nice day, you can enjoy a glass of Prosecco and watch the sunset.

Speaking of sunset : Bregenz comes with the bonus of facing the north west, which means beautiful sunset evenings on the shores of Lake Constance. Get an ice cream and then walk east along the lakeshore to the Sunset Steps – known as Molo to the locals. From there you have the best sunset view in summer.

Kunsthaus Bregenz – Art Gallery

You simply cannot pass through Bregenz without a visit to the Kunsthaus Art Gallery ! The impressive Kunsthaus Bregenz houses a collection of international contemporary art and in our opinion, is simply a must when visiting the state capital.

Since the exhibitions changes from time to time, we can’t say too much about the content – because it’s almost certain that you’ll be seeing a different exhibition than we did. Just let yourself be surprised by whatever it will be. We really enjoyed our visit on both occasions we were there – which says a lot, because usually we rarely find ourselves in museums.

Address: Karl-Tizian-Platz, 6900 Bregenz Admission: 11 Euro (combined ticket with Vorarlberg Museum 17 Euro)

Vorarlberg Museum

As mentioned, we are not huge on spending time in museums. However, we think that the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz is definitely worth seeing, even if just for the architecture alone. The new museum building was opened in 2013 and we honestly found it very impressive.

The Vorarlberg Museum shows both the history and the modern present of Vorarlberg and is larger and more extensive than we expected. Perfect activity for a rainy day. Small photo tip : you can get a really amazing view of Lake Constance through the panoramic window on the 4th Floor.

View from the Pfänder Summit

The Pfänder is the local mountain of Bregenz , which rises above the city on the eastern shores of Lake Constance. From the top, you are rewarded with a fantastic view of Lake Constance and Bregenz. Of course you can also hike up the Pfänder yourself, but most people (like us), will opt to go up with the famous Pfänderbahn.

In just 6 minutes, you go from the Old Town of Bregenz to the mountain station at over 1000 meters above sea level . Once at the top you can either enjoy a nice drink or you can do a little hike.

Small drawback: If you’re hoping to catch the sunset from the mountain top during summer, then you should best prepare to go back down by foot, as the last train departs the mountain station at 7pm. However, you can also request (for a fee of 68 Euros per half hour), to depart later in the evening.

Stand Up Paddling on Lake Constance

Our visit to Bregenz was made all the more memorable with an exciting “first time” experience . Until then we had never been on a stand-up paddle (SUP) board before. (Apart from Romeo’s short experience in France .)

Lake Constance seemed more than inviting for a first timer. Although a bit shaky at first, we got the hang of the movement fairly quickly. Overall, being on the SUP board was much more exhausting than we had expected, because it requires a lot of muscle work to keep your balance.

Alex, our guide and founder of Ländle SUP , also provided us with some helpful tips to save us from tumbling into the water. We would recommend doing a SUP tour either early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the lake is at its quietest.

Stand Up Paddling Bregenz

If you visit Bregenz during the summer months, then you will most likely hear about the Bregenz Festival . Between mid-July and mid-August, the famous floating stage turns into an important venue for the festival and attracts a huge number of visitors from all around! (An astounding 7,000 guests gather around to watch from the stands.)

They create a new performance sequence every two years. So as in 2019 was the first year of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto , that means it will be performed again in 2021. (In 2020, the Bregenz Festival has been cancelled due to Covid.)

Rigoletto was the first opera that the both of us ever seen performed, and it was made all the more special that it was here at the Bregenz Festival. As opera amateurs, we cannot provide much insight or comparison on this matter. However, we can confirm that the performance was so spectacularly performed that we never got bored during the entire two hours of show time. We would even go as far as to recommend this to those who have never seen or have no idea about operas.

Tip: See the Lake Stage / Backstage Tour

The floating stage is actually open and freely accessible to the public during the day. Even if you do not have tickets for the performance, you can always have a (free) peek at the spectacular stage.

However, a backstage tour proved to be even more impressive. During the festival period, these backstage tours run several times a day. It costs 7.50 Euros per person and takes about 50 minutes. As part of the tour, you will also visit the Festival Hall and walk on the stage.

Of course, you will also learn some exciting things about the show, which you can then pay more attention to during the performance. Getting to peek in behind the scenes definitely instills a greater appreciation and anticipation for the opera show! It’s something we can highly recommend!

A few practical tips for visiting the Bregenz Festival

If you aren’t able to take a warm blanket from your hotel with you, then you should at least bring something warm to wear, as it can get rather cool in the summer evenings by the lake shore. You could also consider bringing a cushion for your seat, as you’d be sitting on folding chairs up on the grandstand.

During the performance evenings, many of the nearby restaurants get full rather quickly, so we would recommend you to reserve a table for dinner in advance. The same goes for hotel bookings.

During the performance there is a strict ban on photography and mobile phones . Therefore, you really only see photos of the final applause. However, you should really stick to the ban, because the bright light displays are really distracting for other spectators who are sitting behind you.

And last but not least: familiarise yourself with the performance in advance. Otherwise, you will have trouble following the plot. Although translations are shown on the left and right hand sides of the stage, that alone is not enough to understand the whole show. We just find that the performance is much more beautiful and exciting, if you actually get what’s happening.

Lieblingscafé (featured in the first photo):   If you are looking for a special breakfast, then the Lieblingscafé is “the place to be”. There are many vegetarian and vegan delicacies here. The café is located in the heart of the old town down a small alleyway. Highly recommend!

Bahi (in the 2nd and 3rd photo):   A really great place, where the café also combines with co-working spaces and a yoga studio. You can enjoy a coffee here during the day or come over for a delicious lunch.

Pier 69 :   Located right on the harbour and a good choice if you want to eat near the shore. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fritsch am Berg :   Just outside Bregenz, you’ll find this Fine Dining Restaurant in Lochau. The restaurant belongs to a rather fancy hotel on a mountain. Depending on the table, you can dine with a nice view over the lake.

Option 1: Hotel Schwärzler

During our first visit to Bregenz, we stayed in a lovely, tranquil place called Hotel Schwärzler . The rooms were just beautiful, with a lot of wood, muted colours, and a balcony – precisely our taste in style. The hotel is not located directly in the city centre. However, you can borrow some bikes from the hotel. It only takes a few minutes to reach the old town by bike. (Note: the return journey takes longer, as it’s more uphill.)

As we expected, the breakfast was excellent. Very high quality and with a very beautiful garden scenery, top notch stuff! Another bonus is how dedicated the hotel owner is at Hotel Schwärzle. Rarely have we met such a dedicated hotel owner and we feel that he truly cares about the welfare of his guests.

Here you can book the hotel: Hotel Schwärzler

Option 2: Hotel Hirschen in the Bregenz Forest

If you’d rather not spend the night in the city, then we have a special recommendation for you: the Hotel Hirschen . Located in the Bregenz Forest, this place is an absolute gem and it’s only a 30 minute drive to the centre of Bregenz. For those attending the festival, this hotel also offers a bus shuttle service for their guests so you don’t have to drive in the evenings.

The Hotel Hirschen is a dream of a hotel. The ambiance is so special with a very quaint yet stylish feel. Cozy, but still very special. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can only highly recommend this hotel if you prefer a more natural setting.

13 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Bregenz

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated Dec 28, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

The capital of the mountainous state of Vorarlberg, Bregenz lies on the southeastern shores of Lake Constance at the foot of the Pfänder on the westernmost tip of Austria.

Extending southwards as far as the Bregenzer Ache and divided into the Lower and Upper Towns (Unterstadt and Oberstadt), Bregenz is best known for its many festivals and cultural attractions. Of these, the most visited is the annual Bregenz Festival, which brings both serious music lovers and casual tourists to enjoy lakeside opera and orchestral concerts each summer.

The town can trace its roots back as far as the Bronze Age, when a settlement of Celts built a fortress here. This was in turn conquered by the Romans in 15 BCE and later developed into an important trading post. After eventually being Christianized by Gaelic monks around the 8th century, the town became the seat of the Counts of Bregenz.

Today, its beautiful setting alongside Lake Constance (Bodensee) and its proximity to both Germany and Switzerland make it one of the top places to visit in Austria. Plan your sightseeing with our list of the top attractions and fun things to do in Bregenz, Austria.

Lake Promenade in Bregenz, Austria

Located on idyllic Lake Constance, one of Europe's most scenic lakes and the continent's third largest, Bregenz is a convenient base for exploring one of the most picturesque corners of Austria. The town itself lies on a plateau at the base of the Pfänder Mountain, which provides stunning views over the lake.

A great place to begin your Bregenz adventure (and get your bearings) is at the city's busy harbor area. This attractive area is a delight to explore on foot, and is home to no end of fun things to do, including dining, shopping, enjoying its entertainment opportunities, as well as swimming. The real highlight, though, is taking a stroll along the city's famous Lake Promenade (Seepromenade).

Established in the 1880s, this traffic-free, pedestrian-only attraction offers spectacular lake views at a relaxed pace. It's especially pleasant for a stroll in the late afternoon and after nightfall, and offers many great photo opportunities as the sunset and city lights dance across the water.

Floating stage along the Lake Promenade

As you stroll along the Lake Promenade, you'll notice, just offshore, the city's large "floating" stage. Built over the water, it's the venue for numerous concerts, theatrical productions, and festivals.

The best known of these is the famous Bregenz Festival (Bregenzer Festspiele). Held each July and August, it's one of Europe's most popular (and oldest: it was established in 1946) festivals and features prominent operatic figures and major musicians and institutions such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

The venue itself is a large one, and is capable of handling nearly 7,000 spectators. Performances are also held at various other locations across Bregenz, including Festspielhaus , so be sure to check the English-language official website below for full details.

Address: Platz d. Wr. Symphoniker 1, 6900 Bregenz

Pfänderbahn cable car

Immediately east of Bregenz and dominating the town is the 1,064-meter-tall Pfänder. Accessible via a two-kilometer, six-minute journey to the summit aboard the Pfänderbahn cable car – or a two-hour trek via a steep footpath from Bregenz via Hintermoos – it's a must-visit for its incredible views over Lake Constance and the German and Swiss towns set along the lakeshore.

On a clear day, some 240 mountain peaks are usually visible, making it one of the most famous lookout points in Austria. Other fun things to do include stopping for a meal at the cableway's upper station restaurant, which offers spectacular views from its terrace.

At the Pfänder Alpine Wildlife Park , visitors can enjoy a pleasant 30-minute stroll through a green space with herds of alpine mountain goats. At the neighboring Eagle Observatory, you can watch birds of prey demonstrations.

In winter, the Pfänder welcomes skiers from across Europe to its slopes.

Lake Chapel of St. George

Lower Town (Unterstadt) is the newer part of Bregenz, with the Kornmarktplatz at its center. Highlights include the former Kornmarkthaus built in 1838 (now home to a theater); St. Nepomuk Chapel , an 18th-century Rococo Church notable for its rounded shape; and the Kornmesser Inn built in 1720.

Also of interest is the nearby New Town Hall (Rathaus) built in 1686 and the adjoining Lake Chapel of St. George (Seekapelle). The latter was endowed in 1408 in memory of the victory over the peasants in the Appenzell War of 1403.

Houses in Bregenz Upper Town

The once fortified old Bregenz Upper Town (Oberstadt) occupies the site of the Celtic and walled Late Roman town of Brigantium. It's a wonderful area to explore on foot, as many of the streets have preserved their old-world character and charm and are largely free of traffic. In places, remnants of the old 13th-century town walls still stand.

Other Upper Town highlights include the Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus), a half-timbered building from 1622; the Deuringschlösschen , a little palace built in 1698; the walled Capuchin Monastery and Church from 1636, with the Chapel of St. Joseph (added in the 18th century); and the splendid Parish Church of St. Gallus . This simple 14th-century Gothic structure was rebuilt in 1738 and is notable for its rich Late Baroque and Rococo interior decoration.

Vorarlberg Museum

On the northern side of the Kornmarktplatz in Bregenz's Lower Town stands the Vorarlberg Museum . Founded in 1857 to preserve the state's rich cultural heritage, it's one of the top places to visit in Bregenz.

Highlights of its many displays include the collections of historical, cultural, and artistic interest ranging from prehistoric times to the present day, including ancient stone memorials and archaeological finds from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages. There's also a sizable collection of Roman finds from the 1st to 4th centuries.

Other displays are devoted to local culture from the Gothic and Renaissance periods, including musical instruments, costumes, crafts, and weapons. The museum is also home to a rich collection of goldsmiths' work, coins, and tapestries.

Address: Kornmarktplatz 1, 6900 Bregenz

Kunsthaus Bregenz

One of the most attractive modern structures in town – it's basically a steel skeleton with a layer of glass sheets surrounding but not touching it – Kunsthaus Bregenz is noted for hosting a wide variety of rotating exhibits of international contemporary art. Opened in 1997, it has fast become one of the town's most important cultural attractions.

In addition to its art exhibits, it hosts an eclectic mix of events and educational programming. Don't miss seeing the building at night for its spectacular lighting. A café is located on-site for those looking to extend their visit to this attractive Bregenz landmark.

Address: Karl-Tizian-Platz, 6900 Bregenz

Official site: www.kunsthaus-bregenz.at

St. Martin's Tower

Probably the most noticeable landmark in Bregenz is the massive St. Martin's Tower (Martinsturm). Built between 1599 and 1602 as a watchtower, this historic Baroque building offers superb panoramic views over the town and Lake Constance from its upper levels.

Highlights include a number of superb ceiling frescoes, as well as a large collection of local history exhibits and displays.

Address: Graf-Wilkhelm-Strasse, Bregenz

Dornbirn and the Rappenlochschlucht

Dornbirn, the newest and largest town in the state of Vorarlberg, lies only a few kilometers south of Bregenz at the edge of the Bregenzerwald. The town is well known for its many textile firms, and savvy shoppers can visit company outlets for bargains. First mentioned in records in AD 895, Dornbirn has existed under its current name only since 1901 and now extends all the way to the Rhine.

A highlight of a visit is the Rappenlochschlucht , a magnificent gorge into which the turbulent River Ache flows, and which can be easily accessed from the small village of Gütle (it's just a 10-minute walk). A highlight of this beautiful area is the picturesque Alplochschlucht , a 120-meter-high waterfall. The area features a number of well-marked trails that are popular with hikers.

Dornbirn Map - Tourist Attractions

Feldkirch, the old district capital of Vorarlberg and the most westerly town in Austria, lies some 35 kilometers south of Bregenz, where the River Ill carves its way through a rocky gorge from the Wallgau into the Rhine Valley. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, the town features a very well-preserved and historic old town center.

Dominating the town, Schattenburg Castle provides superb views over Feldkirch. Reached by a steep track, this stunning fortress was once the seat of the Counts of Montfort from the early 12th century until 1390.

Highlights include a beautiful courtyard with a wooden ambulatory, and a palace with a banqueting room. It also houses a local museum with a collection of weapons and a Romanesque crucifix from 1250, as well as an old inn and restaurant. English language guided tours of the castle are available.

Address: Burggasse 1, 6800 Feldkirch

Official site: www.schattenburg.at/en

View from the Gebhardsberg

A short drive south of Bregenz rises the Gebhardsberg, a 600-meter-tall heavily wooded hill that's popular among walkers and hikers for its many forest trails. Worth exploring are the ruins of Burg Hohenbregenz, destroyed by the Swedes in 1647, and an 18th-century pilgrimage chapel with frescoes added around 1900.

From the popular Burgrestaurant, there are magnificent views of the town, the lake, and the Rhine Valley. A climb southwards along the Ferdinand-Kinz-Weg is also well worthwhile.

Boat Tours of Lake Constance (Bodensee)

The busy harbor, Bregenz Hafen, serves commercial and pleasure boats, as well as ferries to other lake towns.

A scenic one-hour cruise around Lake Constance gives photographers plenty of good views over the lake, its attractions , and the pretty harbor of Lindau with its lighthouse and lion guarding its pleasure-boat basin. These cruises are especially popular at sunset, and there are also evening dinner cruises.

Official site: https://www.vorarlberg-lines.at/en

Vandans

In the heart of the Arlberg, just 60 kilometers north of Bregenz, lies the small village of Vandans. One of Europe's most popular winter sports destinations (and also popular in the summer with hikers and climbers), the community, perched on the mouth of the river Montafon, where the Rellstal enters the Illtal, boasts one of the most attractive settings in all of Austria and can trace its roots back to Roman times.

If you're driving to Vandans, take the road that climbs up the beautiful Rellstal to the Unter Zaluandaalm. Another option is to take a chairlift from Vandans to Latschau, connecting it with the Golmerbahn. An alternative day trip is to head south to the Lüner See , a lovely little alpine lake encircled by a pleasant footpath and overlooked by a number of tall mountain peaks.

Most of the tourist attractions in Bregenz are located along its lakeside promenade and in the nearby Unterstadt, the Lower Town centered around Kornmarktplatz. The floating stage just offshore is the venue for the Bregenz Festival and other events, and the nearby Pfänderbahn station is the base of a scenic mountain ride. You'll find more things to do in the narrow streets of Oberstadt, or Upper Town, still guarded by remnants of its 13th-century walls. Remember that from mid-July to mid-August, during the Bregenz Festival, hotel rates are higher, and rooms are booked far in advance. Here are a few of our favorite highly rated hotels in Bregenz:

Frequently asked questions.

GuruWalk is an international community for pay-what-you-please walking tours that connects tourists with tour guides all around the world. Our mission is for you to be able to enjoy this type of tour in any place you can imagine.

The GuruWalk community is formed by "gurus" (local guides) who are open, attentive, fun people with great knowledge of the city and who will be your friends wherever you travel.

The other part of the community are the "walkers," or tourist who opt for this type of tour over the more traditional tours, who enjoy unforgettable experiences and most importantly, love to travel around the world doing guruwalks.

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city.

The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost. While becoming a part of the community, making a booking, or setting up a tour on the platform is 100% free, the traveler has to pay the guide at the end of the tour based on his experience. This concept is commonly referred to as a pay-what-you-please walking tour, because it empowers the client to pay based on their satisfaction with the tour and encourages the guide to always do their best.

At GuruWalk, we call them "guruwalks" so our walkers don’t get confused with the concept. Our intention is for them to understand the concept better and then give a fair remuneration to their Guru, so that we can all keep enjoying this type of tour all across the world.

Look for the city that you want to visit and then choose from all the guruwalks that are available, the different themed experiences, the different neighborhood and the various types of activities to find the best option for you. Book the tour for free through the online platform, receive the email confirmation with all the info and you’re ready to go!

All that’s left to do is show up to the guruwalk to enjoy and learn about other cultures in a fun and entertaining way. Don’t forget to tip your guru’s good work and have a great time.

The star question that the walkers always ask! You choose how much to give, you can take into consideration how satisfied you were with the tour and how much you can afford.

Our gurus are the best tour guides who are at it day after day, who are creating fun and entertaining tours so you can get to know the most important aspects of a city, they know a lot about the city you’re visiting and they’ll help you to have the trip of a lifetime.

This is why most walkers on GuruWalk generally give between 10 o 20€ per person, but as we said, you can choose to give more or less depending on your experience.

If you’d like to join our community of international gurus, all you have to do is click the link here. We’re waiting to get to know you!

MacIntyre played his final five holes 5-under par, including an eagle at the par-5 17th, to head into Sunday 14-under for the week in search of his first PGA TOUR win.

The chasing pack consists of Ben Griffin, Ryan Fox and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes all at 10-under par. Big names like Tommy Fleetwood, Sam Burns and Joel Dahmen sit at 9-under, with Rory McIlroy and Tom Kim just in striking distance at 7-under.

Here's everything you need to know to follow the action.

Bregenz Upper Town

  • share Facebook Twitter E-Mail Whatsapp SMS

You creepy, homey town, you. The old town of Bregenz: coats of arms, legends and dungeons.

Upper Town Bregenz

Oberstadt Bregenz

Whether it's a shark from Lake Constance, a not-so-antique tower from St. Martin, an amazon decisive for the outcome of a war, a gallows bell or a "prison house": the upper town of Bregenz fascinates us thanks to its medieval buildings, most of which are far more than only have one story to tell.

The upper town of Bregenz seems to be more than just a steep city path away from the tourist hustle and bustle at the lake or the hectic shopping world in the city centre. The old fortification walls can be seen from afar, which – depending on their character – make a threatening or calming impression on visitors.T he modern world is left out already at the entrance, the historic city gate. Historical coats of arms, a mummified shark and the relief of a Celtic goddess allow everyone to immerse themselves in a mystical-mythical world and think of ages in which cults, wars and heretics were omnipresent.

The Bregenz Tower Keeper

The somewhat antiquated-sounding title of "Türmer" still exists today. Until a few years ago, he even lived in the Martinsturm, the baroque landmark of the state capital. Even if one inevitably thinks of the “Hunchback of Notre Dame” when one thinks of the “Turmer of St. Martin” – with the maintenance of the historical walls and the exhibition rooms on the history of Bregenz housed in them, the Bregenz tower keeper did not have any horrible tasks at all. The inmates of the prison, which has now been renovated and now appropriately houses the Federal Monuments Office, probably felt much less comfortable. And those for whom the "hangman's bell" rang in the Martinsturm were truly horrified, as this meant the imminent execution of the unfortunate. Luckily, for many decades now, it has only announced the time.

Honor the Guta!

Political decisions are no longer made in the Old Town Hall (1662), the largest half-timbered building in the city, although it is still a real "jewel" in Bregenz's old town. The Deuringschlössle, which was built in the 17th century, served as a motif for painters such as Egon Schiele. Only a few meters in front of it is the Ehre-Guta-Platz - the old woman "Guta" saved the people of Bregenz from an attack by the Appenzell people in 1406, who she had been secretly overhearing and revealing their plans. So we owe it to Guta that the upper town, where almost every house serves as a photo motif, has been preserved as a place of peace, contemplation and - just a little bit - of horror and was not razed by the medieval hordes. That is definitely worth a square and a fountain named after her. Ultimately, the upper town developed more and more into a gem not only for the people of Bregenz, but for anyone interested in history in the region. A gem that is definitely worth a visit!

Discovery Tour

A leisurely one-hour tour starts at the tourist information office. Via Rathausstraße and Maurachgasse you reach the upper town. Past the Martinsturm (2) and medieval walls, the path leads through cobbled streets to the Meißnerstiege and out of the old town. The Thalbach monastery and the parish church of St. Gallus (6) are the next stations, which are connected by the Ernst-Volkmann-Stiege. Once at the top, the view falls on Lake Constance and the striking corner tower of the Deuring Schlössles (3) opposite. Shortly after the Capuchin monastery (7) you will reach the Thurn and Taxis Park with its mighty trees. In the magnificent palace in front of it (8), the professional association of visual artists in Vorarlberg shows its exhibits. The Kirchstraße with its charming little shops and cafés is the last stage on the way back to Leutbühel.
