Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (formed in 1998) is an American alternative and noir-psychedelic rock band, hailing from Riverside, California, U.S.

Prior to the formation of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in 1998, bassist Robert Levon Been and guitarist Peter Hayes had become friends in school based on a mutual love for ’90’s British rock including the Stone Roses, Ride, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. Hayes went on to play in the Brian Jonestown Massacre before the two began collaborating and looking for a drummer. Before long the duo, known as The Elements, were introduced to England native Nick Jago and the line-up was complete.

After changing their name to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, in reference to Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in the 1953 film “The Wild One”, the band moved to Los Angeles and released a 16-track demo. Before long the demo was making waves on both sides of the Atlantic which led to a host of major labels courting the band, and in March 2000 the BRMC signed with Virgin Records. Following a tour in support of the Dandy Warhols, the band released their debut full-length “B.R.M.C.” in March 2001. The album was strongly influenced by the classic hard rock of Led Zeppelin, The Verve, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr, as was its successor “Take Them on, on Your Own” released in 2003. Charting at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, the record was produced by Rik Simpson, and features a critical commentary of the U.S. government.

The band left Virgin Records following the release and signed with Echo and RCA Records. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s subsequent record, the acoustic-orientated “Howl” was issued in August 2005, taking a step back from the hard rock of their first two albums. The band’s fourth album “Baby 81” marked a return to the intense rock and roll approach, after which drummer Nick Jago left the group and was replaced by Leah Shapiro. With the introduction of new personnel, BRMC also introduced electronic and ambient embellishments on their fifth full-length “The Effects of 333” in 2008.

“Beat the Devil’s Tattoo”, produced by Been’s father Michael followed in 2010 earning strong reviews and charting at No. 58 on the Billboard 200. Three years later the studio album “Specter at the Feast” was issued by their own label Abstract Dragon led by a cover of The Call’s single “Let the Day Begin”.

Live reviews

At one point, I fantasized about joining a motorcycle club. Hair flowing in the wind, black leather jacket with club name stretching across, awesome chopper, awesome handlebar mustache and black biker boots. Yeah I can still picture it now. But I gave up this dream once I figured out I was too much of a wuss to drive a motorcycle. However, I did end up being a fan of a motorcycle club, the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in fact. I don't get a motorcycle or a leather jacket, but I do get to listen to some of the best garage rock songs ever made. "The band that broke the floor" are no strangers to awesome music. With spectacular songs such as "Ain't No Easy Way", "Red Eyes and Tears", "Love Burns" and 'Rival", BRMC (That stands for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in case you were somehow confused) stands to be one of the lesser known but equally amazing rock bands that know exactly what good music means. With a uniquely shaped garage rock sound infused with flashes of punk and hard rock, BRMC delivers a stunningly deep sound that's raw and vibrant with all its sharp edges. Like a gritty outlaw from the wild west, BRMC is badass. Marlon Brando eat your heart out.

Enthralling to listen to, BRMC are invigorating. Their sound is pure unadulterated rock, the kind that never gets old to listen to. They have this unique garage and psychedelic feeling that makes you relax as much it gets you pumped. It's hard to explain but just remember this: BRMC is an underrated rock band that will get your attention. They tour constantly and refuse to give their fans a bad show, something that is never frowned upon.

There ain't no easy way to fall in love, but there's no doubt you'll love the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

With leather jacket and shades seemingly compulsory, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club always look like the coolest band in the world when they’re up on stage. Now consisting of Robert Been, Peter Hayes and latest drummer Leah Shapiro, the trio continue to do their classic rock and roll thing with a swagger and passion. The band burst on to the scene with debut album 'B.R.M.C.' in 2001 and that’s still where the San Franciscans best live moments are culled from. The influence of Jesus and Mary Chain, Velvet Undergound and garage rock is present and correct as the rumbling bass of "Spread Your Love" echoes around the venue, the intense chime of "Love Burns" seems doubled in reverb and when the moment "Whatever Happened to My Rock ‘n’ Roll (Punk Song)" hits, the crowd – and it’s a dedicated bunch that follows BRMC as they continue to sell out shows – goes predictably nuts. They also throw in songs from later records, highlights of which are "US Government," brimming with political anger and the acoustic strum of "Shuffle Your Feet," from the gospel-tinged 'Howl' album. There’s nothing new going on in the music of BRMC, but Been and Hayes do believe in what they’re doing and there’s never anything less than 100% given when the pair, plus Shapiro, are up on stage.

A Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show is not a simple gig, it is a trippy, psychedelic experience. Dressed all in black, the trio have not brought any of the Californian sunshine from their homeland with them this evening yet this is exactly what the audience are expecting and anticipating. Having worked the circuit since the early 2000s, the shoe gazing experts have amassed a huge following of fans who continuously attend the shows over and over mainly due to the fact that every single show is slightly different due to the unpredictability of the musicians onstage.

Having released seven albums so far, the group has intelligently designed a setlist in order to merge the tracks together into spanning psychedelic darkness. The fact they have no hit singles appears to work in their favour this evening as they simply play the very best tracks in their opinion and these go down fell with the enthusiastic audiences. The warped guitar riffs and thumping drums sound phenomenal when paired with the moody lighting and somber atmosphere achieved. 'Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll (Punk Song)' has been reserved for an encore and allows the band to leave on an impossible high.

Watched them play the ritz last year or so ago but when I heard they were acknowledge in Manchester and playing at venue I haven't been to before I booked tickets so to the gig last night,we've had some really good bit weather in the UK and Manchester was on top form with all the bars and people enjoying a drink outside before the gig,so we got in the Albert hall enue at about 8 just in time to watch the support band (the jakals) they were really good and got us all bouncing then brmc came on and rocked the place and the Albert hall with stain glass windows and old architecture really helped the deep moody sound of brmc blast out at you not much new material but who cares when there back catalogue is so good so yeah it was a top night helped by great weather nice outdoor bars and a top band..

‘Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’, last night in Detroit. The name from Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in, “The Wild One”. Imagine the Black Keys with Led Zeppelin’s swagger, and the jangling chords of REM, real loud. With two guitarists, Robert Been and Peter Hayes, multi instrumental, (guitar change every song almost), and currently a drummer named Leah Shapiro, who is John Bonham like in her drum assault. San Francisco based, they are up to any ‘three piece’ sonic wall of melodic sound. Even Cream. Melodic, acoustic songs of shimmering urgency, laced in, they create ethereal guitar sounds that includes heavy use of slide guitar, ‘psychedelic’ is to simple a description. So, Pandora, Spotify, Sonos, whatever your source, you won’t be disappointed. Rock as intended to Roll.

I love this band. That being said, the show was TERRIBLE. I blame Roseland Theater's sound system the most, but it must be said that the first opening band--Deap Valley--sounded fine and I had no trouble with the sound level, or discerning the instruments or voices. The second band, Death from Above 1979, was WAY louder than the first band, and they just sucked. I held out hope that BRMC's sound would be better. Alas, they were just as atrociously loud and the set was painfully muddy. You could barely tell which song was which, and feedback occurred throughout the whole show! We wore earplugs, and even so, our ears rang for three days. I hate to say it, but it was the worst live show I've ever seen. It was a huge disappointment and a failure.

I had seen Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at a festival a couple of years ago and thought they were pretty good. Yesterday's gig at the Albert Hall proved to me that they are, in fact, one of the best bands I've had the chance to see live. I've been a fan of their music for quite a while now, but I was also truly impressed by their performance and amazing energy. Rock'n'Roll clearly isn't dead.

valentine-caulfield’s profile image

Always great. First time I've seen them at the Depot, good sound quality but a bit loud for the size of the venue. Played a long set with all my favorite songs plus a new one. No encore which was a little disappointing but probably due to the venues rules I'm guessing? Overall a good show, always wish it was longer and a little more interaction with the crowd would have made it great.

allan-johnson’s profile image

It was dreadful, they were only allowed to play 25 minutes. And then there was a 35 minute break before Alice in Chains.

It's a pity, the band was great, you could see they were ready to play more before they were interrupted and said they could only play one more song.

Great shame, since they sounded so much better than Alice in Chains.

buck-4’s profile image

Amazing show. Good crowd not over packed. Death From Above 1979 sounded pretty good as well. BRMC Killed it. So glad I went. Will probably be the last concert I get to see at The Masquerade on North Ave. I'm so happy that it was this one. Can't wait till they they return.
