Portugal & Spain Bike Tour: The Frontier

Portugal & Spain Bike Tour: The Frontier

  • What's Included
  • Delicious Meals
  • Great Hotels

Cycle through history, over Roman bridges and by medieval monasteries along roads winding through the picturesque rolling Alentejo plains region of Portugal and into the neighboring sun-baked Extremadura, Spain.

Our new 6 day cycling trip will give you a rich introduction to one of the most beautiful regions of Portugal and its close ties to life across the border in neighboring Spain. Cycling in the Alentejo is ideal because it combines a complex history with quiet country roads winding through olive orchards, vineyards and fields of grain. Every day is filled with picturesque rides, visits to historical points of interest and good food and wine. Explore Evora, the former capital of Portugal and taste wine and have lunch at a local winery estate. In the town of Vila Viçosa, once home to the royal family, you’ll learn about the significance of the local marble industry. And venture across the border to Olivenza, Spain and learn about its fascinating history and how it was once a Portuguese town. Head down to a Lusitano horse breeding farm and wander the cobbled streets of a border village where the Jews took refuge during the Inquisition. Finally climb up to the impressive castle town of Marvão high above the plains with panoramic views of the entire region. This is a once in a lifetime trip that must not be missed!

Trip Highlights

  • Spin along the quiet country roads of Portugal’s Alentejo and Spain’s Extremadura regions (including a former smuggler’s route) through golden plains dotted with statuesque cork and olive trees, fields of wildflowers and impressive castle towns
  • Discover the fascinating, intertwined histories of Portugal and Spain
  • Visit the fortified town of Elvas, with its towering aqueduct and Olivenza, a former Portuguese village in Spain
  • Cycle to a traditional Portuguese wine estate for delectable lunch and wine-tasting

The Alentejo is a world away from busy, hilly streets of Lisbon, with rolling hills of golden plains and wildflowers, cork tree estates, generations-old olive groves, and sheep and cattle dotting the meadows. After arriving at our hotel and completing a bike fitting, we’ll cycle leisurely to a tiny village called Arraiolos, known for its handmade carpets and on to a traditional local winery for a delicious lunch and wine-tasting. We’ll hop in the van and return to Évora to refresh before heading out for a walking tour of the local sites. Tonight we dine on Alentejo specialities in a delightful local restaurant.

Today we’ll hop in the van for a short transfer to Vila Viçosa to the heart of the Portuguese marble industry and the impressive royal palace founded by the House of Braganza. After a walkabout we’ll get on our trusty bikes and head east to Elvas, an imposing fortified town with a magnificent aqueduct and break for coffee. We continue to Embarcadero de Olivenza where we’ll have a refreshing picnic along the banks of the Guadiana reservoir. A short van transfer takes us to the village of Olivenza, a historically disputed section of the Portuguese-Spanish border where we’ll visit a Templar castle and other interesting local sites on foot. After a fun-filled day we return to our hotel, a converted convent in Alter do Chão, a quiet village known for its royal horse breeding estate. Tonight we’ll dine on local specialties such as Iberian pork, in a charming local restaurant.

Today we’ll get to live like locals and take a loop ride from our hotel to the nearby village of Monforte with its Roman bridge (and incidentally, famous for its award winning sheep’s cheese) through olive orchards to Fronteira, where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch by the river. On our return to Alter do Chão we’ll cycle on a dedicated cycle path to Cabeço de Vide, a spa town with thermal waters, used for over 4000 years and with the ruins of a Roman bathhouse. This afternoon you’ll have time to relax by the pool or wander the village and see the local Renaissance fountain. Tonight we’ll dine at our convent hotel.

Lusitano horses, the Templars and Vestiges of Secret Jewish Traditions

  • Coudelaria De Alter – a Lusitano horse breeding and riding center
  • Mosteiro Flor da Rosa – a fortified 14th monastery converted into a Pousada
  • Castelo de Vide with Jewish quarter and museum
  • The dramatic fortified hilltown of Marvao

We’ll hop on our bikes from the door of our hotel and spin to nearby Coudelaria do Alter for a tour of this Lusitano horse-breeding estate and riding center that once belonged to the Portuguese royal family. Continuing on, we’ll cycle by the impressive 14th c. Flor da Rosa monastery which has been beautifully converted into a hotel and take a break at a local café for a special hearty soup. After a well-deserved rest we head to the more challenging portion of our ride that takes us to another fortified spa town of Castelo de Vide. We’ll park our bikes and explore the steep winding cobblestone streets of the Jewish quarter and visit the hidden synagogue, now a tiny museum. For most of our guests, this is when we hop in the van to Marvão. However, there is an optional rewarding ride up to this dramatic fortified village straight to the doors of our hotel. Tonight we’ll dine in our hotel.

Biking : 41 mi (32 mi + 9 optional) | 4hrs40 | + 3,313 ft elevation gain Walking : 1 hr Driving : none Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Hotel : Hotel El Rei Dom Manuel | Marvão

A prehistoric Menhir, Border Smugglers, Pueblos of Spain, and a Roman Bridge

  • Menir of Meada (the tallest prehistoric stone monument in Iberia)
  • Smugglers route and “Salto do Cavalo” (small border between Portugal and Spain)
  • Valencia de Alcantára (Castle and typical Spanish pueblo)
  • Marvao border (official border between Portugal and Spain)
  • Roman Bridge of Portagem (medieval border)
  • Alameda dos Freixos Fraxinus excelsior (European ash)

We’ll cycle directly from our hotel to visit the Menhir de Meada, an imponent prehistoric stone monument, likely to be over 4000 years old and one of a network of such monuments found in the Alentejo and throughout Europe. Following a coffee break at a former train station we cross the border to Spain via the “Salto do Cavalo” or “horse jump” crossing and head to Alcántara da Valencia, for a walkabout the castle town and a free lunch on your own. That’s it for today’s cycling unless you’re ready for more and take the optional ride back to our hotel. Your afternoon is free to explore Marvão and its breathtaking views. Dinner is on your own.

Biking : 54 mi (37 mi + 17 mi optional) | 5hrs45 | + 3,937 ft. elevation gain Walking : 1 hr Driving : none Meals : Breakfast Hotel : Hotel El Rei Dom Manuel | Marvão

The Vineyard Landscapes of Sao Mamede Natural Park and a Touch of Spain

  • Vineyard landscape of São Mamede Natural Park

Today we admire the quiet beauty and tiny villages found in São Mamede Natural Park following country roads lined with hedges and plane trees and tiny vineyards. Incredible panoramic views will reward our climbing before we take a jaunt across the border into Spain and back again soon after. Following lunch in an excellent restaurant in Portagem its farewell, with a van transfer to Lisbon, where you’ll arrive before dinner time. Farewell! Adeus! Adios!

Biking : 55 mi (34 mi + 21 mi optional) | 6hrs20 | + 5,216 ft elevation gain Driving : 2hr30 transfer to Lisbon Meals : Breakfast / Lunch

Although we do our very best to adhere to the schedule above, the itinerary is subject to change for numerous reasons beyond our control, including weather and terrain conditions.

Obrigada for a Wonderful Week! We have just enjoyed wonderful things in Spain and Portugal (cycling in the Extremadura and Alentejo). Stopping on a quiet country road to listen to the birds singing and seeing the multi-colored carpet of wildflowers was truly magical. And exploring the various old castle towns and the regional cuisines was also very special. It was a perfect spring vacation for us. – Mary and John E.

Best Bike Tour I Have Ever Taken!! Eva and Pedro are wonderful hosts / guides and have set up a truly remarkable adventure. I am going to have to come back to the Andalusia trip in Spain. Thanks for a wonderful time and great hospitality! It was a great way to celebrate my upcoming 60th birthday with my daughter. – David B.

I Hope We Can Cross Paths With You Again! Dave and I wanted to thank you so much for putting on a wonderful bike tour for us. Your choices of the route, all accommodations, meals, etc. were superb and your company was delightful. You were so supportive of us and relayed so much good information, historical as well as teaching us about regional customs, cuisines and language. We really enjoyed the side trips that were added into the cycling, too. The equipment, van, snacks and picnics all were great and your attitudes as well. – Dave & Kate

Rolling hills & coastal views

Portugal bike tours.

Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal features over 528 miles (850 km) of pristine blue-water, sandy beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate—the perfect atmosphere for cycling.

Lisbon boasts The Park of Nations, home to one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and is a smooth cycle ride. Pedal through Porto’s castles and sip world-famous Port wine of the River Douro.

The dedicated bike paths and side roads of the countryside have little traffic and allow cyclists to easily explore. Likewise, the rolling hills and quaint villages invite adventure and the stunning Algarve region boasts plentiful coastal views.

“The countryside was beautiful, with both challenging and gentle hills, and the people we met were friendly and helpful.”

Radreisen in Spanien und Portugal - Madeira

When you think of Spain and Portugal you probably think of the sun, the beach, and the sea first - but these countries have a lot more to offer than that!

Thanks to the mild climate, you can cycle here almost the whole year round. When the weather starts to get cold in the north of Europe, the almond blossoms are blooming on Majorca! The orchards along the Costa Blanca are fragrant and on Madeira, you'll see flowers in a whole array of colours. Cycling holidays in Spain and Portugal used to be holidays for insiders. But now there are more and more well-established cycle paths that take you through wonderful countryside and idyllic villages.

How about a break at one of the quiet beaches here?  Refreshed, you go on to your next hotel where you will be able to enjoy the culinary highlights of the local area.  Allow yourself to be pampered by the cooks with a paella or a gazpacho - the traditional Spanish soup - and try one of the well-known local wines. Plan your next active holiday by bike in Spain or Portugal.

Radreisen in Spanien - Verlauf

Cycling holidays in Spain

Spain has a rich cultural heritage and you can experience this up close from the bike saddle! Spanish sun on your skin, sand of the Costa Blanca between your toes, paella on your tongue and hot rhythms of flamenco in your feet.

Radreisen in Portugal - Verlauf

Cycling holidays in Portugal

Active vacation in Portugal: Most people first think of surfing. But whether on Madeira, along the Douro, the Algarve or the Atlantic, here you will find the perfect symbiosis of enjoyment, cycling pleasure and scenic beauty.

There is a wide range of holidays to choose from in these areas. In the north of Spain you cycle along the famous St. James' Pilgrim's Path from inland Astorga to the Atlantic Coast and then on to Santiago de Compostela, the end to the path with its majestic cathedral.  You can make a pilgrimage there by bike! Cyclists can get their pilgrim's pass stamped in their accommodation and will receive a certificate if they cycle at least 200 km.

To the east you explore the inland of Costa Blanca by bike. You cycle through varied countryside of pine trees and orchards, through the hilly hinterland to the Mediterranean coast, to Valencia.

Further south, you can look forward to a cycling holiday in Andalusia , known for its passionate soul! As the summer in Spain is very hot, we recommend this tour in spring or autumn. In pleasantly warm temperatures you cycle along unused railway tracks and through river valleys, getting to know the many sides of Andalusia. Look forward to the culinary specialities - Spain's tapas or gazpacho - historic towns such as Seville or Cordoba and the flair of the Flamenco.

Even if you don't immediately connect Madeira with cycling, this flower island has some beautiful tours for sporty cyclists! All round Portugal's floating garden, as the island is called, you can explore romantic floral gardens, dreamy harbour towns and the natural beauty of this lovely island on different sections of the tour. To make sure that the sections don't get too arduous, the steepest inclines can be covered by bus.

I booked a one day ride around Evora, Ricardo picked me up at the Four Seasons Ritz hotel in Lisbon and we drove out to ride in Évora. We rode for three hours around the area rolling hills through lovely cork forests, up to an ancient stone cropping. Ricardo was an excellent guide and wonderful host. The bike was really great quality. We then had lunch at an amazing restaurant in the heart of the medieval city. The ride was well planned and the whole day went smoothly. I highly recommend this company LLR-Portugal Bike Tours.

Have a question?

A bike tour in Alentejo feels like stepping into the past, with rolling landscapes of wheat fields, olive groves, cork trees, and vineyards.

Experience the quiet charm of cycling through the Alentejo region of Portugal as you discover an old-world way of life. It's the heartland of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same steady pace that's been followed for generations. Unpack and unwind at one luxurious hotel for your entire bike tour, ensuring relaxation at the end of each day. Savor slow food cuisine, exquisite local wines, and cycle to historic towns like UNESCO-listed Évora, with its ancient Roman temples, city walls, and bath ruins. Here, time seems to pause, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life are long forgotten.

This trip was spectacular from the beginning to the end. All guides, all rides, all meals, all activities. Well thought out and planned.

Thank you for another great experience. Some of our biking buddies did their own home-grown rides in Portugal while we were on the Trek trip, and they acknowledged the Trek trip looked a lot more fun.

The dining experiences were amazing. The vineyard tour and dinner on the last night was unforgettable, gorgeous and so special. I felt so privileged to spend the evening there.

Every meal out as a group was well thought out and enhanced our experience, from the opening dinner in town with local wine and food to the final closing. The lunch in Elvas with the incredible view was fabulous, with well selected food. The dinner in Estremoz was incredible, with the highest quality food and presentation. And the final closing dinner with wine tour, bit of cooking on the estate, and seating at the most elaborate table with wonderful service was a lovely closing touch.

Candace, Trek Travel Guest

Three people walking on the streets of Monsaraz

Both the tour of Evora and the tour of the cork estate were wonderful. The history of the region was central to the enjoyment and awe of the spaces we visited. Meeting and enjoying the people of the region enriched our time there.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). Public transportation is inexpensive and easy to use from the airport. You can take the Metro with a one-way ticket for 1.90€ or the daily pass (which allows you to use the metro, bus, trams, and trains) for 6€. More information can be found at www.metro.transporteslisboa.pt . Alternatively, taxis are plentiful and cost approximately 15-25 Euros to Lisbon center.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the bakery A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You'll then shuttle approximately two hours to your retreat oasis for the week. Please have your first-day cycling clothes and riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. After a light lunch of local delights on the patio of the hotel, your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike for the week and speak to the specifics of cycling in the area before taking to the roads of Alentejo.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa (+351 268 887 010), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from Lisbon to the first hotel will take about two hours and cost around 200 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa in Vila Viçosa, Portugal. You will shuttle approximately two hours to the Lisbon Portela Airport to arrive around 1:00 PM. Please do not schedule a flight out before 2:30 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays. If you are staying in Lisbon, the shuttle will also stop in the centre of the town at A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon).

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, known as the city of seven hills, is the capital city of Portugal overflowing with great café culture, music, art, and gratuitous history. You'll be enchanted by the narrow, cobbled streets and white washed walls, ochre roofs, and colourful splashes of ceramic tiles. Be sure to walk the streets of some of the many storied neighbourhoods and certainly don't pass up a pastéis de nata, Portugal's mouthwatering custard tart. Packing and Weather

The south central region of Alentejo sees favorable temperatures year round, but spring and fall are the best time to visit with average 70-80 degree highs (21-26ºC) and lows of 50-55 degrees (10-12ºC). Mornings and evenings in fall can be cooler so make sure to pack layers. Rain is infrequent but there is always a chance for a shower so don’t forget your rain gear to assure you comfort while riding. View our Packing List

bike tours spain portugal

Día 2: Évora Rutas circulares a Monsaraz o Alqueva
