Since the 1500s though, it has attracted a lot of explorers, archeologists, miners and those who were looking for the Fountain of Youth.

You will find some interesting memorabilia here including old canons that were used in the past.

Republic is also where the historic JR Martin Park is which means it is always a good day to take a stroll down the history lane.

35. Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Republic

Let’s talk about the battlefield itself for a minute.

In 1861 about 5,400 troops from the Union and about 11,000 Confederates fought on this very ground.

The confederates might have won that round but it did lead to more battles in this state.

The artifacts on this property give you an insight into what that was like.

Some of them include the sash and sword belt of General Patrick Cleburne from Arkansas.

Apart from touring the battlefield itself, you can also go down the road that extends 4.9 miles and see all the structures.

What’s left of them anyway.

There are a great deal of bluffs, caves and sinkholes to check out.

So, you will have a great time hiking and horseback riding here.

And if you are into watersports, there’s canoeing and kayaking as well.

The rivers are also popular places for swimming and fishing.

And if you only want to check out caves, well, there are 300 of those waiting for you.

That’s in the Goggins Mountains region.

This is a park with a visitor center, tons of riverside picnic spots and a general store.

There are small pools that are amid the rocks of the Black River and a few shut-ins too.

You will love the view of crisscrossing mountains that also have hiking trails that extend 45 miles.

The Elephant Rocks State Park is in St. Francois Mountains which are in the southeastern part of the state.

This is a popular place for hiking, but more importantly, it is classified as a geological reserve.

This place has a lot of granite boulders that are considered to be unusual looking.

And it gets its name from the fact that they look like walking elephants.

These rocks have been here for 1.5 billion years.

That’s right.

They are said to have come from molten magma (that’s what lava is called while it is still in the volcano) that has eroded and fractured over time.

In the 19th century, they quarried this place and over the years it turned into a hiking and rock climbing place.

Needless to say, both those activities are incredibly fun and one of a kind when done here.

You will find the Murphysburg District where the founding fathers of the city built some truly elegant homes.

And we can’t forget Grand Falls which is the largest natural waterfall in all of the state.

It is about 2 feet from a ledge that is 163 feet wide.

A Cave-Hopping Adventure

Talking Rocks Cavern

It takes about an hour to trek all the way through Talking Rocks Cavern on this guided tour across wooden boardwalks and concrete stairs, and it’s worth every step. Tour guides focus on educating visitors on the history and geology of the cave as you walk through and spy a variety of incredible formations.

Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City

A tour of Marvel Cave, which sits underneath  Silver Dollar City, takes visitors down about 500 feet below the surface on a one-hour guided trek. You’ll see a massive  cathedral room and lots of cool formations in this wet limestone cave. As you learn about the  colorful history of the cave and the park, you’ll get a thigh workout because there are a ton  of stairs here!

Smallin Civil War Cave With its super-wide mouth, Smallin Civil War Cave has one of the prettiest entrances around. Make sure you visit after a rain, so you can see a stream trickling over the rocks and out of the mouth of the cave. A guided tour filled with information about the area’s indigenous  people and the cave’s history takes visitors along a boardwalk for an easy and flat trek.

Fantastic Caverns This is the only cave on our list where you ride through on a Jeep-pulled tram instead of walking through. That means it’s great for  visitors who might struggle on an hour-long and sometimes steep walk. You’ll hear fun history (like how the cave was discovered by a local farmer’s dog) as you travel through wide spaces filled with stunning formations.

Lake of the Ozarks

Excelsior Springs, Missouri

Who it’s for: A girls’ getaway Why it’s great:  Harry Truman slept here! The hotel dates to 1888 but its most storied claim to fame is that in 1948, Harry Truman spent the night he was elected President there. The grounds are beautiful but it’s the spa that steals the show. It is first-class all the way. Although a flood last summer damaged the indoor lap pool causing it to be closed for repair, there are plenty of other perks to lower your heart rate and stress level. The Grotto is the centerpiece of the spa. It includes a dry sauna, steam sauna, hot tub, cold plunge shower, steam shower and an exfoliation bar. Can you say “aaahhh”? Built in 1912, it has been a hotel, an office building, a strip club and then a vacant eyesore. In the early 2000s, The Park Inn underwent a 12-year, $18 million renovation to restore it to its Prairie School-style beauty. An adjacent law office, also designed by Wright, was incorporated into the hotel to allow for 27 boutique hotel rooms. There’s also a wonderful restaurant and downstairs lounge. But The Park Inn isn’t the only Wright-related architectural draw. Many of his students designed homes in the Prairie School style and they are scattered throughout Mason City. An easy-to-follow driving tour map is available from the visitor’s center. Mason City is also home to Meredith Wilson who wrote The Music Man . In the Deckhouse Suites, where my husband and I stayed, you can relax in a soaking tub inside or step outside for lake views. Nest Suites sit above ground with a veranda overlooking hillside gardens and Table Rock Lake. All rooms come with soaking tubs, kitchenettes, premium towels and bedding, powered blinds and Bluetooth speakers; some have outside hot tubs. Ten units are available as of early 2024, with plans to create more .

Pro Tip: If you love outdoor hot tubs (and who doesn’t?), ask for Deckhouse #3, Treehouse #3 or Cavern #1.

Sunset Hills Cottages, Branson

Five luxury cottages ring a swimming pond with three waterfalls at Sunset Hills, another new adults-only lodging in Branson. Hermann Hill, Hermann

Harry S Truman once stayed at The Elms, where he indulged in a treatment including a salt rub and massage. Today’s visitors will appreciate that the historic hotel, built in 1912, recently unveiled a full renovation of the spa, complete with a salt cave and outdoor zen garden. Hot tubs, a lap pool, a steam room and a sauna provide more ways to relax. Outside, stroll with your sweetie through 16 acres of lawn and gardens, get playful with lawn games (seasonal) or take in a summer movie on the lawn. Big Cedar Lodge, Branson

Spread over 4,600 acres in a wooded location on Table Rock Lake, Big Cedar is large enough to accommodate all types of travelers. Couples may want to opt for a cottage or log cabin escape, with amenities like fireplaces, kitchenettes and private decks or balconies. "We stayed in a lodge-like spacious cabin on the lake with a deck perfect for enjoying our morning coffee while watching the mist rise off the lake," says Midwest Living assistant art director Erin Keeffer. Spend your days at the resort’s pools and hot tubs; golfing on one of the five courses; taking a Lady Liberty cruise; or luxuriating at the spa. And that’s not to mention more than a dozen options for restaurants and bars—or all the activities in Branson, 10 miles away.

Pro Tip: Sunsets look glorious from the resort’s Top of the Rock, where a seasonal sunset ceremony concludes with a boom from a Civil War cannon. The experience is a must, Keeffer says. She also recommends visiting Top of the Rock's Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum as well as the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.

Old Kinderhook Resort, Golf Club and Spa, Lake of the Ozarks

Golfers love coming to Old Kinderhook to play the scenic and challenging 18-hole Tom Weiskopf course, set among valleys, waterfalls and hills. But even if you or your partner don’t golf, this resort will keep you entertained at the spa, marina, two on-site restaurants and pools (both indoor and outdoor). Gather around firepits on cool evenings, and enjoy ice skating in winter. Guests can stay at the 84-room main lodge (built in 2015) or settle into the privacy of a golf cottage or villa with kitchens.

Pro Tip: Ha Ha Tonka State Park, one of the state’s most popular, is less than 10 minutes away. Fourteen trails lead to features like a natural bridge, sinkholes, caves, lakeside bluffs, and the striking ruins of an early-20th-century stone mansion.

Boutique hotels and inns in metros like Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield give you a comfortable and classy home base for exploring attractions like Country Club Plaza in Kansas City or vast Forest Park in St. Louis.

From the minute you walk into The Raphael’s lobby, with sparkling chandeliers, coffered wood ceilings and rich red upholstery, you’ll know you’re in a special place. A giant iron "V" out front signals that you've found Hotel Vandivort, built in 1906 as a Masonic Temple and reimagined in the 2020s as a boutique hotel. "Springfield instantly charmed us, as did the Vandivort," says Erin Keeffer, assistant art director for Midwest Living . "The hotel has modern, artful decor with nods to Missouri and Springfield history that really added to the experience of learning about the city. We especially loved the Springfield flag mural, sculptures in the courtyard area, and our room's mix of vintage posters, photos and paintings. From the balcony we had a great view of downtown." More perks? On-site dining at The Order and the rooftop Vantage, plus the hotel is dog-friendly. For max romance, book a balcony king with Do Not Disturb Package—a bottle of champagne delivered to your room, and dinner for two at The Order or in-room dining.

The Ozarker Lodge, Branson

Chic plus creek equals boutique.  The Ozarker  — winner of a 2024 Best of the Midwest Travel Award —is a reimagined 1950s roadside motel on a woodsy site overlooking Fall Creek, convenient to major Branson attractions but also just enough off the main drag that you feel a little secluded. Detroit-based design studio Parini helped transform the 102-room property, blending national park-style nostalgia with a warm contemporary vibe. The lobby doubles as a bar and coffee shop, and amenities include a pool, creekside cedar hot tubs, daily "Golden Hour" with half-price wine and beer, and firepits for making s’mores.

Betty Lea Lodge, Echo Bluff State Park, Eminence

Echo Bluff, named for the towering cliff alongside Sinking Creek, is one of Missouri’s newest state parks (opened in 2016); it also offers some of the state’s best park accommodations. If a night (or two or three) in the woods is calling to you and your partner, the Betty Lea Lodge provides 16 guest rooms and 4 suites, with balconies overlooking the creek. Fireplaces add to the cozy feel of the modern rooms, and the casual Creekside Grill serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. (I can vouch for the Gourmet Grilled Cheese, with three kinds of cheese plus bacon and tomatoes, on grilled sourdough—a hefty handful big enough to feed both my husband and me for lunch.) In summer, listen to live music under the stars at the amphitheater. 

Pro Tip: Sinking Creek is generally shallow enough for wading (bring your water shoes!) but deep enough in some spots to swim. Tubing, canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding along the creek and Current River can be arranged through park partners.

Depot Inn and Suites, La Plata

If you believe in romance on the rails, this 30-room hotel might be just the ticket. Inspired by local rail history (La Plata is a passenger stop for Amtrak’s Southwest Chief route from Chicago to Los Angeles), the lodging, built in 2006, celebrates all things railroad with train decor and even a live feed of the BNSF tracks nearby. For max luxury, book one of four themed suites (Pullman, Sportsman, Victorian and Western Elegance), each with a king bed, fireplace and two-person whirlpool tub. Other perks: Free continental breakfast, complimentary evening wine tastings, heated indoor pool, volleyball court, bikes, and pet-friendly rooms.

Sedalia is known around the music world as the home of ragtime musician Scott Joplin. A festival dedicated to ragtime each June draws thousands. However, Sedalia is also a stop on Missouri’s Katy Trail – the longest rails-to-trails project in the U.S. Stop by the restored depot for souvenirs, a local history lesson and to rent a bicycle.

For a different kind of artistic side, the local Daum Museum of Contemporary Art showcases 1,500 pieces of modern art from some of the most celebrated artists of the past 50 years.

Branson Natural Attractions

Missouri, as well as being known as the Show-Me state, is also known as the Cave State. The Cathedral Room in the Marvel Cave, part of Silver City, is the largest cave entrance room in the United States. Marvel at this natural wonder, then take a cable train back up the half-mile climb to the surface.

You can also visit Table Rock Lake, which is one of Branson’s top family destinations. When you visit, you and your whole family will see how it got its reputation. 

It is stunningly beautiful, with crystal clear water lapping against sandy beaches along almost 800 miles of shoreline, and is a hiker and boater’s paradise. Come swim, boat, fish here, or just laze the day away sunbathing on the beach. 

Known as the city of fountains, Kansas City has more than 200 public fountains that the whole family can enjoy, especially in the hot weather. They are spectacular, and each has a different theme. If you wait until sunset, you may just get a dancing water show, synchronized to lights and music.

The water theme of Kansas City continues at LEGOLAND’S 4-D Cinema. During the screening, you might be sprayed with a bit of water or even snow, but it’s all in good fun. 

The LEGOLAND Discovery Center is packed with more than two million LEGO blocks. There is plenty to see and do, as with every LEGOLAND, but one unique feature to the Kansa City LEGOLAND theme park is its Wizard of Oz area.

This area honors L. Frank  Baum’s literary classic with Dorothy’s flying house, the balloon that might have transported her safely home, plus Munchkin-Land, the Wicked Witch’s Castle, and the Emerald City all memorialized in lego bricks.

Located at the Crown Center Entertainment Complex, the world headquarters of Hallmark Cards, LEGOLAND is in the same building as the SeaLife Aquarium, where you’ll feel as though you’re swimming with the fish, thanks to its stunning ocean tunnel.

You can thank Hallmark Cards, in part at least, for there being such a wholesome, family-friendly vibe in the city. Hallmark employees provide a free hands-on, creative area in the Crown Center called Kaleidoscope, where kids can try their hand at different arts and crafts.

The Crown Center also houses the Coterie Children’s Theatre. This family theatre has been named one of the top five in the country and offers family shows, acting lessons, and programs for all your budding performers. 

Children Center

Nearby Union Station holds Science City, a fantastic children’s science center. You should check out one of their Saturday Family Workshops. In other parts of the train station, you’ll see model railroads and a collection of historical locomotives in full size.

Kids will love taking home a bag of shredded money as a souvenir from the Money Museum, located next to the Federal Reserve Bank. 

Historic Attractions 

The educational National WWI Museum and Memorial is another must-visit on the trip. Here in Kansas City, you can even experience the creation of a Harley Davidson motorcycle through a free behind-the-scenes tour in the Harley Davidson Factory. You’ll even get a chance to sit on America’s favorite bike afterward.

Water Attractions

After visiting the many museums, it will be time for Schlitterbahn Waterpark, a great place to take the whole family for some outdoor fun. Featuring rides and activities for all ages, you can all spend many happy hours here. 

With its shallow water zones, spray areas, and small waterslides, Boogie Bay is a favorite of the little ones. It has the world’s highest and fastest waterslide, Veruckkt, which will appeal to all the big kids in the family. Enjoy a lazy morning sunbathing on the sand at Kristal Beach, then float away the afternoon on the 3,000-foot King Kaw Rapids River ride. 

Saint Joseph may be less well known than some of the other places on this list, but it is packed full of activities to make a family weekend getaway here great. The city is packed with outstanding architecture that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as 13 museums and a variety of outdoor activities like:

Saint Joseph Family-Friendly Attractions 

There’s also some great shopping and dining in Saint Joseph. The Center Court at the East Hills Mall offers an old-fashioned carousel and a play area that will keep little ones amused. The famous Pony Express started in St Joseph. Visit the former Pony Express headquarters, which is now the Patee House Museum, a transportation and communications museum. However, there is also a Pony Express Museum to see, which is a modern interactive museum with state-of-the-art displays.

The outlaw Jesse James’ former home is now the Jesse James Home Museum. Robert Ford shot and killed the infamous criminal here in 1882. You can see many of the notorious outlaw’s belongings, as well as those of his wife and children, on display here.

Saint Joseph Natural Attractions

Krug Park , the city’s oldest park, sprawls over 160 acres. Kids will love its:

With beautiful rose gardens, substantial landscaping, Italian Renaissance architecture, and charming picnic spaces, there’s something for the entire family to enjoy here. At Christmas, your family will love seeing Krug Park lit up with the most prominent outdoor light display in Northwest Missouri.

For an educational trip, Hannibal is your town! Home to Mark Twain when he was a boy, the place is chock full of things related to the famous American author.

Tour the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum properties, visit the Mark Twain Cave and Mark Twain Lake, and then take the Mark Twain Riverboat for an educational sightseeing cruise along the Mississippi River. 

Hannibal isn’t all about Mark Twain, though. At the Molly Brown Birthplace & Museum, you’ll get information from a guide about The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Molly was a philanthropist who survived the unfortunate events of the Titanic in 1912.

Grant’s Farm

There’s also lots going on at Grant’s Farm, a St. Louis family favorite. The 281-acre property is home to over 900 creatures you can pet and interact with up close and personal. Admission to Grant’s Farm is free to all ages. 

Saint Louis Zoo

Before you leave St Louis, take a tram ride to the top of the Gateway Arch and view the mighty Mississippi River from 630 feet high.

The outlaws Jesse and Frank James used to roam this area, and you can see the 1859 Jail that held Frank James while taking a tour on an old west mule-drawn covered wagon. When was the last time you had a scratch-made lunch? When you travel off the beaten path to Greenwood Country Tearoom in Greenwood, Missouri, that’s just what you’ll get at this family-owned, small-town restaurant! Just over a half-hour drive south of Kansas City, Missouri, you’ll find the adorable town of Greenwood, which hosts a charming antique district. The tearoom sits right in the heart of this quaint area, making it a day trip-worthy restaurant! 

The menu offers a homemade soup of the day, sandwiches, artisan salads, and a daily rotating selection of fresh-baked quiche. The food is hearty, yet everything has a touch of refinement and a special twist. For example, the Classic Caesar Salad comes with house-made croutons, the Turkey and Artichoke Sandwich features a house-made herb cream cheese smear, and the grilled cheese includes pumpkin butter! What?! The food feels fancy, yet you know you will not go home hungry with hardy Midwest favorites on the menu. 

Do not skip the sides. The gorgeous pickled beets are fresh, with none of that canned flavor, and the hummus or salsa is served with gourmet blue corn chips. Fresh daily soup is also an option for a side. And get this: one of the specialty sides is a frozen fruit salad . This is beautiful fresh fruit encased in a creamy mixture, sliced into picture-perfect wedges. Totally unique and fun. 

Now that I’ve told you how delicious the lunch items are, ordering dessert is a no-brainer, right? The desserts are all made from scratch and rotate daily. Plan ahead; with 48 hours notice, you can order and take home a full-sized desert. 

The restaurant has many food-sensitivity-friendly options. Upon request, many of the salads can be made gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegetarian. They even have a gluten-free dessert option daily.  No matter your choice, you’ll surely have a special-feeling experience. The tearoom is thoughtfully decorated with a blend of antiques, and your meals are served on vintage dishware.

This is a tearoom, after all, and the tea selections feature both classic and unique blends. You can order a personal pot or a pot to share. With over 30 teas on the menu, you might find yourself taking a culinary journey. With flavors like Buckingham Palace Garden Party, Swiss Chocolate, and Bourbon Street Vanilla, you’re likely to feel transported far from this small town in western Missouri. The tea menu is thoughtfully categorized for easy selection, including Herb & Fruit, Rooibos, Green, Herbal & Wellness, Oolong, Flavored Black and Chai, and Black and English teas. If tea isn't your thing, try a homemade Italian soda with your choice of flavor or coffee. 

The space is also available for private parties, corporate events, and special events. For example, they host a Thanksgiving Day Lunch and Christmas Open House. Be sure to visit their site to get details and learn about other special events, like regularly rotating specialty markets.

The Greenwood Country Tearoom is in the same building as the Greenwood Vintage Market antique shop. It is on the nicer side of antique malls–nothing junky! You can find teas from the tearoom available for purchase there. Antique mall lovers will find the Greenwood Antique District has a handful of quality antique shops, all within walking distance. The Greenwood Country Tearoom is truly a day-trip-worthy restaurant, especially if you pair your lunch with an antique mall shopping trip.

When it comes to bucket-list destinations for me, they don't get any more exciting than Branson. This small-town Missouri getaway is really the best of all possible worlds - it combines the best of a bustling tourist town, a small-town full of charm, and a nature-filled rustic getaway into one package, and it's all centered around what might be the best hotel in Missouri - Chateau on the Lake, a massive resort on the banks of the massive, winding Table Rock. So it's no surprise that in addition to everything else it has going for it, Chateau on the Lake is home to the best restaurant with a view in Missouri. Chateau Grille is a delicious surprise where the view out the windows is just as big a draw as the food.

Table Rock is one of the most stunning views in Missouri, and there is no shortage of hotels on its perimeter - but none quite have the splendor of Chateau on the Lake, a massive resort and conference center offering top-of-the-line accommodations and dining.

At the heart of this reputation for excellence is the Chateau Grille, the resort's premiere fine dining restaurant. While the seasonal menu is highly acclaimed, the restaurant is most famous for its panoramic views of the lake outside.

While the menu does lean towards classic midwestern fare with an emphasis on well-prepared proteins, we were blown away to see how many local and seasonal touches make their way into the menu. It's no surprise many of the diners are regulars.

The desserts are just as worthy of your attention - perfectly rich and indulgent, but with an extra touch of sophistication perfect for a restaurant of this style.

If the weather allows, there is no better way to enjoy a meal at Chateau Grille than on the patio, taking in the fresh lake air while you dig into some of Branson's finest cuisine. This unique restaurant makes a perfect dining experience for a special night out or a grand sendoff to a Branson vacation.
