Cherry blossom season is significant in Japan due to its historical and cultural importance. Originating as a national pastime in the 8th century, the practice of viewing cherry blossoms, or 'sakura', symbolizes the transient nature of life. This concept, known as “ mono no aware ” in Japanese, reflects on the brief yet beautiful life of the blossoms, which bloom for only about a week to ten days. The appreciation of sakura's fleeting beauty has deeply influenced the Japanese mindset, emphasizing the impermanence of life and the importance of cherishing each moment.

Best (and Worst) Time to Visit Japan 2024, Cherry Blossom Time
Japan is a year-round popular destination with four distinct seasons. Each season offers a variety of charming scenery and culture-rich events for you to enjoy.
The best times to visit Japan are in spring (March to May) for cherry blossoms and in autumn (September to November) for colorful foliage. Both periods have pleasant weather.

The first trip to Japan mainly includes visits to the central three cities: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. The following two weather and rainfall infographics are based on these three cities.

Summer (June to August) is the rainny season in Japan. It is hot and humid, with an average high temperature of about 31°C (88°F), which can feel like 41°C (106°F). It is considered to be the worst time to visit Japan, but it doesn't rain every day so it doesn't really hinder travel.
Plenty of indoor activities, such as ninja experiences and sushi-making, also minimize the impact of rainfall and humid heat. Additionally, July and August are the festival seasons in Japan, making it a good time for families with kids to immerse themselves in authentic Japanese traditions.
June is a better time to travel for families compared to July and August, as it offers slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds (the official summer vacation in Japan begins in July).

Best Time for Cherry Blossoms in Japan
- March to April: 10â18°C (50â64°F)
Cherry blossoms in spring (March to May) are Japan's most beautiful scenery, and you can admire them almost everywhere in Japan. They usually reach full bloom from late March to early April (March 24th to April 2nd), making the spring or Easter vacation the perfect time to travel to Japan.
If you want to avoid the large crowds and enjoy slightly lower prices in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka , the week before full bloom (around March 16th to 23rd) is your best time. Except for some trees where the cherry blossoms have not yet fully opened, the scenery during this time is almost as stunning as it is when the blossoms are in full bloom.
If you want to appreciate the cherry blossoms in April to early May with fewer crowds and lower costs , Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan, is an excellent destination for you. It is also the perfect place to experience Japanese indigenous culture. The best time to view cherry blossoms in Sapporo is in mid to late April (around April 15th to 20th).

1) May is the transitional month from spring to summer in Japan. It's warmer and has clear days, with an average temperature of 15â23°C (58â73°F). It is advisable to avoid Japan's "Golden Week" public holiday from April 29th to May 5th. After May 7th, it is a perfect time to travel as the crowds and travel costs decrease.
2) September and October are cooler months in Japan , the average temperature range from 18-25°C (64-77°F). While there are about ten rainy days in September, there are very few visitors during this time. In October, the number of sunny days increases, and it is also when the maple leaves start turning red, creating beautiful autumn scenery.

- Average temperature: 7â19â (45â66°F)

Festivals and events in March and April: Hanami is a traditional term for viewing cherry blossoms, and it is the most popular activity in spring in Japan. Many traditional ryokans and excellent guides are also fully booked in advance, so we recommend you make your decision at least 3 months in advance. Our Japan expert would customized the trip based on your group size, budget, and requirements.
May: Warm and Sunny
- Average temperature: 15â23â (59â73°F)

July and August: Best Time for Festivals and Fireworks Celebrations
- Average temperature: 24â31â (75â88°F)
- Average rainfall: 163 mm (6 in)
July and August are hot and humid in Japan. Japan offers abundant indoor activities inside air-conditioned buildings , such as ninja experiences, pottery making, and Pokémon Center fun. This helps to minimize worries about the heat and rain. Additionally, taking a private tour in a private air-conditioned car could help to minimize the inconvenience caused by rainfall.
Festivals and events in July and August: Both months host culture-rich festival celebrations and grand fireworks celebrations, such as the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival in Tokyo, the Gion Festival in Kyoto, and Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka. These lively and amazing celebrations allow you and your kids to experience authentic float parades, enjoy the colorful fireworks in the cool summer breeze, and feel the cultural atmosphere deeply.
September and October: Cooler Weather with Fewer Crowds
- Average temperature: 17â24â (63â75°F)
- Average rainfall: 164 mm (6 in)
The weather becomes cooler in September and October, and typhoons sometimes hit Japan, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, especially in September. It does not rain every day (about 10 days a month) and it tends to be drier in October.
It's the low season to travel to Japan so you could expect fewer crowds and cheaper costs. If you are traveling in September, it is important to keep your itinerary flexible in case of flight delays or cancellations.
November: Best Time to Visit for Colorful Autumn Foliage
- Average temperature: 9â17â (48â63°F)
- Average rainfall: 86 mm (3 in)

December: Perfect for Soaking in Hot Springs and Celebrating Christmas
- Average temperature: 5â11â (41â52°F)
- Average rainfall: 65 mm (3 in)
Japan in December is not too cold. It's the best time for you to experience unique winter activities , such as soaking in the hot springs to enjoy the snow scenery, watching the snow monkeys bathe in their own "onsen" (hot spring bath), and appreciating the gassho-zukuri farmhouses' lighting at night.
Festivals and events in December: Japan is an excellent destination for families to celebrate Christmas in. Eye-catching Christmas illuminations and a fancy Christmas feast would help to make a Japan vacation a great experience for you and your family.

Springtime in Japan means one thing: cherry blossom.
The whole country watches and waits for the first sakura (cherry) trees to burst into bloom. Once they do, people flock to parks and squares for hanami  or flower viewing. The romance is passionate but fleeting, lasting only a week or two.
Cherry blossom viewing has been a tradition in Japan for over a millennium. The delicate blooms have acquired a poetic symbolism of the transience of beauty (and the beauty of transience). As both the new school year and the fiscal year begin on April 1 in Japan, sakura trees have also come to represent a season of fresh starts â certainly something worth celebrating.
Choose your timings carefully
The best time to visit Japan for cherry blossoms is during the spring months. Starting from KyĆ«shĆ« in the south in March, regular blossom forecasts keep the public updated as the sakura zensen (cherry-tree blossom line) advances northward, usually passing through the Kansai and KantĆ regions of HonshĆ« in late-March or early April. English-language speakers can monitor the cherry-blossom situation with Kyuhoshi 's online forecast. Latecomers can catch the blossoms in late-April and some times early May in TĆhoku , the northernmost region of HonshĆ«.
There are countless parks , gardens and picturesque waterways across the country where you can gaze upon the beautiful blooms. Choose the best place for your hanami party with this guide to Japan's top cherry-blossom viewing spots.

1. Yoshino, Kansai, is Japan's most famous cherry-blossom destination
The blossoms of thousands of cherry trees form a floral carpet gradually ascending the mountainsides of Yoshino in Kansai. It's definitely a sight worth seeing â and one that many Japanese long to see once in their lifetime â but this does mean that the narrow streets of the village become jammed with thousands of visitors. You'll have to be content with a day trip (doable from Nara , or even Osaka ) unless you've booked accommodations well in advance. Once the cherry-blossom petals fall, the crowds depart and Yoshino reverts back to a quiet village with a handful of shrines and temples .
Best time to go to Yoshino for cherry blossoms : Â Blooms tend to appear early to mid-April in Yoshino and last for a few weeks.

2. Hirosaki-kĆen, TĆhoku, is less crowded
Hirosaki-kĆen  (Hirosaki Park) is a huge green space (nearly 50 hectares!) covering the grounds of what used to be the castle Hirosaki-jĆ . All that remains of the actual castle is a 200-year-old keep, but the park is marbled with the old moats, which are now flanked by sakura and crisscrossed with photogenic arching bridges.
There are over 2500 cherry trees here and given that Hirosaki, way up north in Aomori Prefecture, is not the population center that Tokyo (or even Kyoto) is, you can expect a bit more room to move around. R ent a paddle boat to take out on the moats, which are invariably covered in pink petals.
Best time to go to Hirosaki-kĆen for cherry blossoms: Head here in late-April to early May to see the sakura in bloom.

3. Fuji Five Lakes, Yamanashi, offers the best blossom photos
The view from the Churei-tĆ Pagoda in Fuji Five Lakes is the ultimate sakura photo: in one frame you get a classic five-story pagoda, with curving eaves and vermillion accents, a frothy sea of cherry blossoms beneath it, and on the horizon, triumphant Mt Fuji still draped in snow. (Odds are you've seen the image on a guidebook cover or two.) So what if the pagoda itself isn't actually old (it's a war memorial from the 1960s) and you have to climb 397 steps to get here?
Arakurayama Sengen-kĆen (a park, home to a not-so-shabby 680 sakura trees) is in Fuji-Yoshida , a city at the base of Mt Fuji. It's just about possible as a day trip from Tokyo , but you could also budget an extra day or two for hiking in the foothills of the Fuji Five Lakes region, for the chance of even more Mt Fuji views.
Best time to go to Fuji Five Lakes for cherry blossoms: The blooms tend to peak in mid-April.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Groups of people picnic at low tables in a park with cherry blossoms in bloom overhead](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-01/shutterstockRF_198582002.jpg?w=1920&auto=format&q=75)
4. Maruyama-kĆen ( Maruyama Park), Kyoto, is the top hanami spot
Kyoto has so many fantastic places to see the blossoms that it's tough to narrow it down. If you're looking for an iconic experience, though, it's safe to say that the best hanami spot in the city is Maruyama-kĆen  (Maruyama Park). In the middle of the park is the Gion Shidare-zakura , the "Weeping Cherry of Gion," named for its proximity to the famed entertainment district, Gion , where geiko (Kyoto's geisha) still perform. The over-10m-tall tree, whose blossom-fringed branches arch gracefully almost to the ground, is illuminated in the evening, from dusk until midnight. Oh, and there are some 680 other cherry trees in the park so you can bet on lots of picnics taking place here. Come early to grab a good spot. And later on, take a stroll along the nearby canal, the Shirakawa , lined with cherry trees and also lit up at night.
Best time to go to Maruyama-kĆen  for cherry blossoms: Catch the blooms in early April.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Groups of people gather under cherry trees with pink and white flowers in a park](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-01/Japan-Tokyo-KanokpolTokumhnerd-shutterstock_1088194652-RFE.jpg?w=1920&auto=format&q=75)
5. Yoyogi-kĆen ( Yoyogi Park), Tokyo, has the best parties under the blossom
Like Kyoto, Tokyo has many popular cherry blossom spots. While it's not the most historic â that would be Ueno-kĆen â or the most picturesque â that would be Shinjuku-gyoen â we're doubling down on Yoyogi-kĆen  (Yoyogi Park) because it is just the most fun. It's a huge, sprawling park with tufty grass and plenty of cherry trees, with room for everyone and yet it still becomes a sea of party people growing more and more unsteady as the day gives way to night. We've seen barbecues here, turntables and portable karaoke machines, more selfie sticks than we care to count and the odd guy in nothing but his shorts. The only thing Yoyogi-kĆen is short on is public toilets (prepare to wait in line).
Best time to go to Yoyogi-kĆen  for cherry blossoms: Join the parties under the blossoms in late March to early April.

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Japan
Where and when to see cherry blossoms in Japan?
The ever-popular blossoming of cherry flowers, Sakura , is a national event in Japan. However, the transience of flowers and unpredictability of the nature make forecasting difficult. Fortunately, serious studies and statistics are carried out each year by the Japan Meteorological Agency to provide accuracy of the best time for cherry blossom.
Discover all the tips from Japan Experience to not miss the Japanese cherry blossoms.
The cherry blossom season in Japan continues to attract more and more visitors from around the world, for whom springtime in Japan means sakura . However, as they blossom only for about one to two weeks, your trip must be planned accordingly - which isn't easy, because this long-awaited event is subject to weather conditions . The cold, heat, rain or wind can slow down, speed up, or shorten the blossoming time.
When is the best season for Japanese cherry trees?
It is also necessary to distinguish when cherry blossoms open , kaika , from when they reach full bloom , mankai . If there is no bad weather, there are about seven days between these two times and the flowers only stay in bloom for about five or six days. There is therefore a maximum of two weeks between the hatching of the buds and the fall of the flowers.
Follow the flowering of sakura from south to north
The good news : with Japan extensive area of over 3,000km from the north to the south, it's possible to admire the cherry blossoms from early March to early May . Indeed, the sakura zensen , "the progress of the cherry blossom front", moves from south to north, the islands of Okinawa to that of Hokkaido . Not only that, but as there are over 100 varieties of cherry trees throughout Japan, if you're not after the most sought variety ( somei yoshino ), you will more than likely see the blossoming of at least one of the other species if you're traveling between early March and early or mid-May, depending on the region.

Different varieties can be distinguished by the shape and number of flower petals (from five to over one hundred petals!) and their color, which can vary from white to yellow, or dark pink, through many shades of pale pink. Some species even change color during their flowering ( fugenzo ).
The somei yoshino variety, with its with five petals and very pale pink - almost white - color, is the most famous and widespread.

It is good to note that spring is an extremely popular time to travel to Japan, we advise you to plan your trip up to 8-10 months in advance !

Cherry Blossom Viewing in Japan
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossoms](https://thetrvlsisters.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/best-time-to-visit-japan-for-cherry-blossoms.png)
When is the Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossoms?
Cherry blossom season varies from year to year (due to weather and other factors) and reach different parts of Japan on different dates. The cherry blossoms usually reach full bloom at the end of March or early April in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka . The flowers bloom from the south to the north of Japan – starting as early as January in Okinawa and as late as early to mid May in Hokkaido.
The cherry blossoms typically reach full bloom about a week or two after they first open so your time to see the flowers in a specific destination is short. The Japan Meteorological Corporation releases several forecasts each year in the months preceding cherry blossom season to help you plan your trip. The forecasts estimate the dates the flowers are expected to open and reach full bloom throughout Japan.
What Does Cherry Blossom Viewing Entail?
Celebrating the cherry blossoms is a big production in Japan and locals and tourists head to parks, gardens and riverbanks for some cherry blossom viewing (hanami). Hanami invoives anything from a daytime picnic in the park to a sake fueled party beneath the trees. Some parks have festivals with food stalls. In some places the festivities continue into the evening and the trees are lit up at night.
Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo
You can see the cherry blossoms throughout Japan, but Tokyo is a convenient place for most visitors to Japan to see the cherry blossoms. We also saw cherry blossoms while walking around in Kyoto, but our focus when planning our trip was on seeing the cherry blossoms in Tokyo. Two of the best places in Tokyo to see the sakura include Ueno Park and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden so we spent time at both spots.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms what is the best time to go to Japan for cherry blossom](https://thetrvlsisters.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/what-is-the-best-time-to-go-to-Japan-for-cherry-blossom-1024x768.jpg)
Ueno Park was very crowded and has more of a party vibe. The blossoms here open up a bit earlier than other parts of Tokyo so this might be a good spot to see them if you get to Tokyo a few days earlier.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Best Time to VIsit Japan for Cherry Blossoms](https://thetrvlsisters.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/three-days-in-tokyo-japan-IMG_0066-01-1024x729.jpeg)
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden was not crowded when we visited. There is an entrance fee and alcohol and loud music are not allowed so it is a more peaceful and relaxing spot for hanami. The garden has many early and late blooming cherry trees so you can see the cherry blossoms here even if you miss the peak cherry blossom season. We both preferred Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden over Ueno Park because we don’t enjoy crowds and it is a really beautiful park even without the cherry blossoms.
Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Japan
Kawazu is located on the Izu Peninsula and is one of the earliest spots to see the cherry blossoms close to Tokyo. The cherry blossoms usually reach full bloom in Kawazu around late February to early March (weeks earlier than Tokyo).
You can reach Kawazu from Tokyo by train in about 2.5 hours so you can do a day trip if you are in Tokyo a few weeks ahead of its cherry blossom season. You can also join this day trip from Tokyo .
Fuji Five Lakes region
The cherry blossoms reach full bloom in mid April in the Fuji Five Lakes region so if you missed the cherry blossoms in Tokyo you can make a day trip here to see the flowers with Mt. Fuji in the background.
You can reach Lake Kawaguchiko in about 1.5 hours by car or less than 3 hours by bus from Tokyo. There are also day tours from Tokyo to this area.
Kyoto is also another convenient place for seeing the cherry blossoms and cherry blossoms start opening a day or two behind Tokyo. You can see cherry blossoms at some temples you might be visiting anyway including Kiyomizudera and Heian Shrine.
The Philosopher’s Path from Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) to Nanzen-ji temples is one of the best spots to see cherry blossoms in Kyoto. Maruyama Park (near Yasaka Shrine) has a large weeping cherry tree and is a popular spot for hanami parties. Himeji Castle is another popular spot to see the cherry blossoms and is about an hour outside of Kyoto.

More Places in Japan to See the Cherry Blossoms
You can also see cherry blossoms in other parts of Japan including Osaka , Nara, Mount Yoshino and Nagano .
If you are looking for more recommended places to see the cherry blossoms, this website has a great list of the best places to see the cherry blossoms in Japan .
Tips for Seeing the Cherry Blossoms in Japan
Make travel plans in advance.
Cherry blossom season is peak travel season in Japan so flights and hotels tend to fill up quickly. If you know your travel plans, don’t wait to book your trip. If you can find award availability, this is a good time to use your miles and points since it will be difficult to find bargains on paid travel.
Wake Up Early for Good Photos
Parks tend to be more crowded on the evenings and weekends when locals are not working. If you want to take good photos of the flowers without a lot of people, visit the parks first thing in the morning and preferably on a weekday.
Take a Day Trip Out of Town
The cherry blossoms bloom on different dates in different parts of Japan. If the cherry blossoms bloom much earlier or later than anticipated and are outside of your travel dates, consider taking a train, bus or tour out of Tokyo or Kyoto for the day to visit another Japanese destination where the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
For example, if you find yourself in Tokyo well ahead of cherry blossom season you can take a day trip to Kawazu . If you visit Tokyo after cherry blossom season take a bus or tour to the Fuji Five Lakes region and see the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background.
Taking the train in Japan is very easy. To research train schedules, check out the hyperdia website . Rome2rio is also helpful for looking up all the transportation options.

WHEN DO CHERRY BLOSSOMS BLOOM - JAPAN AND HOKKAIDO FESTIVALS 2024
When the icy winter winds turn into cool spring breezes, pink clouds of cherry blossoms burst from Japan's sakura trees. From Hokkaido to Okinawa, the fragile flowers welcome in the warm weather. The cherry blossom season in Japan is a favorite time of year for locals and international travelers alike. Festivals pop up around the country, and people race from south to north to experience the entire season. While the Japanese sakura tree is a worldwide sensation, you might still have a few questions about cherry blossoms. If you plan to visit Japan during the 2024 cherry blossom season, let's delve into some of your concerns. By the end of this article, you'll be an expert!
HOW DO YOU SAY CHERRY BLOSSOM IN JAPANESE?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://alljapantours.com/php17/interfaceMaster/blogMaster/img17/photo/blog/src/COHY20218708.jpg)
If you've never studied Japanese before, let's begin with an introductory lesson. The word for cherry blossom in Japanese is sakura (æĄ). I'll switch between the two terms throughout this article. Interestingly, sakura is more descriptive; it can refer to cherry blossom flowers, trees, or the delicate flavor of the petals. " The FLAVOR? Like from cherries? Do cherry blossoms grow cherries? " you might ask. The Japanese sakura tree does indeed grow small fruits, but they are completely inedible. Cherries come from a similar species of tree, but cherry blossoms grow chrysanthemumsâJapan's national flower. Sakura flavor comes from the petals, but more on that later. A more pertinent question is...
WHEN IS THE CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON IN JAPAN?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://alljapantours.com/php17/interfaceMaster/blogMaster/img17/photo/blog/src/CODI182447871.jpg)
When most people think about the cherry blossom season in Japan, images of spring come to mind. That's because the most common type of sakura, Yoshino cherry, blooms during this time of year. However, just saying "spring" doesn't cover the extent of the potential dates of the season! Japan is 3,008 km (1,869 mi) long and has both subarctic and subtropical climates. They can start blooming as early as January in Okinawa and as late as May in Hokkaido! Depending on your destinations, the best time to see cherry blossoms can vary.

More and more people are waking up to the charms of Japan's northern-most island every year! There's always something to see or do any time of year in Hokkaido . From its dazzling winter festivals to its lavender and moss phlox displays in summer , there's never a dull moment. Hokkaido is also the last area of Japan to experience the cherry blossom bloom. Budget travelers can save by putting off their trip until April 26th Youâll miss the main thrust of the season, but thatâs when theyâll start blooming in Hokkaido. Compared to bustling Tokyo and sophisticated Kyoto, the atmosphere in Sapporo feels homey and laid-back. Although one of Japan's largest cities, Sapporo has plenty of places to catch the cherry blossom bloom. Namely, you can find them around Odori Park , where you can take in the view from the TV Tower Observatory. Or, take it easy in Maruyama Park, where you'll also find Hokkaido Shrine . Matsumae-jo is the only castle in Hokkaido, and one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in the country. The park surrounding the grounds has over 10,000 cherry trees of different varieties. Because each type has different flowering seasons, you can see them blooming for nearly an entire month. Depending on the peak viewing period, the official Matsumae Park Cherry Blossom Festival takes place from mid-April to mid-May. The "southern" city Hakodate is your final destination when you take the Shinkansen to Hokkaido. Given its geographical location, Japan established Goryokaku Fort in Hakodate to defend the borders from foreign invasion. It lost its military status in 1910 and opened as a public park soon after with over 1600 Yoshino cherry trees.
HOW LONG DO CHERRY BLOSSOMS LAST?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://alljapantours.com/php17/interfaceMaster/blogMaster/img17/photo/blog/src/BGJI20229055.jpg)
The typical lifespan of sakura chrysanthemums is 10-14 days. Depending on the species, they may last longer, but Yoshino cherries bud, bloom, and wilt in this short span. Catching these blossoms might seem incredibly difficult and frustrating to plan an overseas trip around. But their evanescence is part of what makes them so beautiful and significant in Japanese culture.
WHAT DO CHERRY BLOSSOMS SYMBOLIZE?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://alljapantours.com/php17/interfaceMaster/blogMaster/img17/photo/blog/src/BGXU20224893.jpg)
Japanese people equate several meanings with cherry blossoms, but most notably, they speak to the beauty and fragility of life. The flowers give the lands a sense of renewal as winter thaws into spring, but they only last a short while. When Japanese people go to a cherry blossom festival, they marvel at the pink flowers and appreciate their impermanence. In Waka poems, writers often note how sakura blooms are similar to life itself. Our time on earth is a spectacular experience, but it's only temporary and sometimes too short. The burgeoning seasonal change also markets the start of the new school term for students, as well as the fiscal year. For Japanese people, it doesn't make sense to start things according to the calendar. They wait to embark on new ventures and goals as nature tells them. To celebrate, they hold " hanami " parties with their families, friends, and co-workers.
WHAT DO YOU DO AT A CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://alljapantours.com/php17/interfaceMaster/blogMaster/img17/photo/blog/src/BGHE20228692.jpg)
Most international travelers spend their time at cherry blossom festivals dashing around every tree and taking picture after picture. However, Japanese people do quite the opposite. They choose a spot to lay down a blanket to hold a hanami (flower-viewing) party. Most people bring bento boxes they prepare at home, or in some cases, have a full-on barbecue party! Some parks hold official festivals where vendors sell Japanese street food staples such as chocolate-covered bananas, candied strawberries, and okonomiyaki . But the real treat this time of year is the abundance of sakura-flavored items. I said I would get back to this, didn't I? Just as Japan's sakura season is temporary, so too are these limited-time-only delights. The petals add a light flavor to treats such as ice cream, candy, and traditional Japanese sweets. Even large companies like McDonald's and Starbucks join in the fun and serve sakura-flavored parfaits and coffees! Whether you come during the early southern or late northern blooming season, take in every sight along the way. We encourage you to have a picnic under the shade of a sakura tree and stop to smell the cherry blossoms.

From ninja to samurai, to sushi, Japan is full of iconic images and symbols, but perhaps few are more iconic than the beautiful splendor of the falling cherry blossoms!
But when is the best time to visit Japan in order to see the cherry blossoms? Many tourists make a point of visiting Japan specifically to see the cherry blossoms, so is there a best time to head there?
If you want to get a head start on planning your trip to Japan , then read on below, because we are going to take a look at the very best time to visit and see the cherry blossoms!
What Is The Best Time To Visit Japan For Cherry Blossoms?
If you want to see the cherry blossoms when you visit Japan, then you will want to make sure that you visit at the right time. Now, what âthe right timeâ is will depend on where in Japan you are visiting.
Cherry blossoms generally begin growing from around the southernmost part of Japan around January.
Thus, if you are planning to visit anywhere in Japan that is closer to the south, then you will want to aim to visit between the months of January and February.
If you are in slightly more central parts of Japan, such as the popular cities of Tokyo and Kyoto , then you will want to aim to visit from the last week of March at the earliest, to the first week of April at the latest.
This tends to be the time when the cities see their largest concentration of cherry blossoms (see also â Do Cherry Blossom Trees Grow Cherries? â) and is definitely a time to go!
And, of course, if you are visiting any area towards the Northern tip of Japan, then you should aim to be there around May, as that is the time when the cherry blossoms bloom towards the North!
Why Do Cherry Blossoms Die So Quickly?
It is still largely uncertain why exactly cherry blossoms begin falling from their trees so quickly after blooming.
However, the sight of falling cherry blossoms has actually become just as iconic as the blossom itself, and is not seen as a bad thing!
What Do Cherry Blossoms Symbolize?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Best Time To Visit Japan For Cherry Blossoms](https://whysojapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Best-Time-To-Visit-Japan-For-Cherry-Blossoms-2.jpg)
Not only do cherry blossoms look simply incredible, and fill Japanese towns and cities with a gorgeous pink color, but they are also highly symbolic for the Japanese people.
When the cherry blossoms (see also â Are Cherry Blossoms Edible? â) are in bloom, people often gather around the trees to take in the splendor of the blossoms before they inevitably fall within around 2 weeks of first blooming!
The Japanese believe that cherry blossoms are a direct reflection of life itself, in that while it is incredibly beautiful, it is also fleeting, so you must make the most of it while you can.
The symbolism of cherry blossoms has shown up in numerous ways across Japanese culture, especially in film, television, and anime.
When a cherry blossom is shown falling from a tree in fiction, it very often symbolizes that a character has died.
How Long Does A Cherry Blossom Tree Live?
Though cherry blossoms themselves may only ever be on display for a short period of around two weeks, the cherry blossom tree itself can actually live upwards of around forty years!
This means that the same tree can provide countless years of cherry blossom beauty many years after first growing.
Can Cherry Blossoms Be Found Elsewhere In The World?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Best Time To Visit Japan For Cherry Blossoms](https://whysojapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Best-Time-To-Visit-Japan-For-Cherry-Blossoms-1.jpg)
Definitely! Cherry blossoms can actually be found all over the world, itâs just that they are slightly more common in Japan, and they have a much stronger significance in the country.
In more western nations in Europe, or even in states across the US, cherry blossoms can still produce very similar blossoms that will take your breath away.
These trees will begin to bloom in springtime within each specific region, and the blossoms will also last for around 14 days before they begin to fall from the trees.
If you want to experience the cherry blossom season in a way similar to what you might find in Japan, there are plenty of national parks and amazing areas in countless US cities that host numerous cherry blossom trees.
Some of the best include the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, the city most famous for cherry blossoms, and the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

If you are planning to visit Japan, you should try to avoid visiting from June to July.
This is because June to July is when much of Japan experiences its rainy season, so each day you could experience very strong rainfall, which could put a significant damper on your trip.
Is It OK To Wear Shorts In Japan?
Yes. It is totally fine to wear shorts in Japan (see also â What To Wear In Japan â), especially during the summer months. Many tourists in the area wear shorts during the summer.
Is Japan Expensive To Visit?
Japan can be quite costly to visit and is one of the more expensive holidays to go on (see also âIs Japan Expensive?â). This is because the average tourist to the area will spend around $120 per day, with much of that cost going on food to fuel their trip.
To Conclude
There you have it. If you want to make a trip to Japan even more magical, you can easily do so by visiting at the perfect time to witness the splendor of the cherry blossom trees.
If you are heading towards some of Japanâs major cities, like Tokyo or Kyoto, then make sure to be there from around the end of March to the beginning of April, as this will allow you to see the cherry blossoms at their best.
For cities north of more central areas, aim to get there closer to May, whereas for cities more towards the south of Japan, aim to be there before the months of March and April!

Nowhere does cherry blossom season quite like Japan: There are blogs, news reports, special menus, talk shows, and festivals following the trees as they go into full bloom across the country. There's even a Japanese word, hanami , specifically devoted to the viewing of cherry blossoms (and picnicking beneath them). With this in mind, we've rounded up the top places in Japan to see cherry blossomsâso that you can hanami with the best of them.

Mount Yoshino
In the Nara prefecture, Mount Yoshino has long been one of Japan's most famous spots for viewing cherry blossoms, in part because its range of elevation means not all of its 30,000 cherry trees bloom at the same time. (The first trees here were supposedly planted some 1,300 years ago.)

A stone's throw from Kitayama Station, Kyoto Botanical Garden is one of the most popular spots in the city for hanami . For peak photo opportunities, look for the weeping cherry tree in the center of the garden.

Philosopher's Path, Kyoto
Also known as Tetsugaku no Michi, the stone Philosopher's Path can be found in the northern part of Kyoto's Higashiyama district. The pathâwhich follows the Meiji-era Lake Biwa Canal âis said to have gotten its name from a legend involving philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who reportedly practiced meditation on his walk here. Today, it's one of Kyoto's most popular spots to view cherry blossoms, thanks to the trees that hang over the path and canal.

Kakunodate, Akita
Known as a samurai district (it once housed 80 samurai families), Kakunodate is characterized by broad streets and lots of open courtyards, both of which take shade from large cherry blossom trees imported from Kyoto in the Edo Period (1603â1868). These "weeping" trees were said to have been planted by samurai themselves, who wanted to outperform each other.

Lake Kawaguchiko
We recommend Lake Kawaguchiko all year round, but as with many areas in Japan, it particularly shines during cherry blossom season. Head to the seaside promenade near the Kawaguchiko Music Forest (so named for its antique music-box museum) for views of Mount Fuji and cherry blossom treesâa postcard-worthy sight if we ever saw one.

Hirosaki Castle Park
Three-story Hirosaki, built in 1611, offers a number of ways to enjoy cherry blossoms in and around its walls and gardens: Here you'll find more than 2,600 trees, petal-topped moats, boats for rental, and a bevy of picnic areas in this castle park in Japan's Aomori Prefecture.

Himeji Castle
Just four hours west of Tokyo by train, Himeji Castle only reopened to the public in 2015 after years of renovations, but it's quickly become a destination for cherry blossom viewing. Note that the castleâsaid to resemble a heron in flightâhas cherry blossom trees in both its free (Senhimebotanen Garden; Sannomaru grounds) and paid areas (Nishnomaru grounds).

Yoyogi Park, Tokyo
No matter the season, the 134-acre Yoyogi Park is one of our top things to do in Tokyo : Come springtime, the park bustles with performers and picnics, most gathered around the park's more than 600 cherry trees. To enjoy them, put down a blanket of your ownâbut be sure not to take more space than you need, which is frowned upon.

Nakameguro, Tokyo
We've called Nakameguro Tokyo's best neighborhood for seeing cherry blossoms , and it continues to hold true, largely thanks to its canal-like waterway: Each spring, the more than 800 trees that line it come alive in brilliant pink. During the Nakameguro Sakura Festival, the trees are illuminated in the evening, and shops and restaurants sell cherry blossom-themed wares like pink champagne along the canal.
Best viewing: The festival runs from March 23âApril 9.

Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo
Unlike some of the other parks on this list, 144-acre Shinjuku Gyoen doesn't have free admissionâit costs about $5. Yet that fee is more than worth it, as the park has more than 1,000 trees of more than a dozen varieties, which means lots of variety in blooming peaks. (Most people try to time their visit around the blossom of the 400 somei yoshino trees, near the park's English garden.)

Kawazu, Shizuoka
The 8,000 trees in Kawazu, on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, are some of the earliest blooming in Japan, with pink and white petals appearing in early February and lasting for about a month. Our recommendation? Bundle up and walk the 2.5-length stretch of the Kawazu River that's flanked by cherry trees.

Maruyama Park, Kyoto
Maruyama Park is Kyoto's oldest park, and one of the ancient capital's most popular spots for cherry blossom viewing. And while it's pleasant enough to stroll under the park's cherry trees during daylight hours, most visit at night to see Maruyama's famed shidarezakura (or weeping) tree, which is lit up during the blossom season.

The Best, Worst, and Most Affordable Times to Visit Japan
Whether you want to see the cherry blossoms or avoid the crowds, these are the best times to visit Japan.
A snowy getaway in Hokkaido, a beach vacation in Okinawa, or a photography trip to capture cherry blossoms in Tokyo â the best time to visit Japan depends entirely on what you want to do when you arrive.
As a country with a seemingly endless amount of activities and festivals on offer throughout the year, there really isn't a bad time to visit. But if you're interested in shrine-hopping in Kyoto, seeing the pink hues of cherry blossoms, or gazing at fall foliage, you'll want to carefully time your visit. Here are the tourist seasons to be aware of when planning your trip.
- High Season: March to May and September to November
- Shoulder Seasons:Â June to August and December
- Low Season:Â January to March
Use this guide to find the perfect time for your dream trip to Japan.
Best Times to Visit Japan for Smaller Crowds
Travelers from all over the world come to Japan to admire the cherry blossoms, so it should come as no surprise that sakura season (late March to April) marks the busiest time for tourism. Domestic travelers also take advantage of Golden Week (a series of four national holidays in Japan) from the end of April to the beginning of May. You'll want to avoid visiting during that time, unless you meticulously plan ahead, since trains, hotels, and sightseeing spots can often be overcrowded or booked out entirely. Stunning foliage tends to draw crowds in the autumn, especially when the leaves reach their colorful peak between mid-October and early November.
If you're looking to avoid the crowds, plan your visit during the rainy season, which typically begins in June and lasts until mid-July. Though this period tends to be humid and drizzly, it's one of the best times to enjoy the popular tourist spots without the crowds. Japan is also quieter between January and March, making it a perfect time to pair sightseeing with snow sports and onsen visits.
Best Times to Visit Japan for Good Weather
Japan, while not especially large, is surprisingly varied when it comes to weather. Frigid winters at the northernmost tip of Hokkaido make the subtropical islands of southern Okinawa seem worlds away. The rainy season typically runs from early June to mid-July throughout most of the country â Tokyo included â except in Okinawa where showers begin in early May. Meanwhile, in Hokkaido, summertime brings mild temperatures and blue skies.
If you aren't hitting the ski slopes, March to May and September to November are generally considered the best times to visit the country for pleasant weather. That's when travelers can find the iconic cherry blossoms that seem straight out of a postcard, or, on the other hand, vivid autumnal leaves. During these seasons, rainfall is minimal, skies are clear, and temperatures are mild, ranging from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit most days.
For those not averse to heat and humidity, summer brings a different tempo to Japan. It's a time of year perfect for exploring nature â ideally, somewhere cool up a mountain or as far north as possible. The lusciously cooler climes of Hokkaido are heaven in the summer, with rainbow-bright flower fields and countless outdoor activities, from hiking to horseback riding.
In the winter, the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is undeniably the best place to ski or snowboard, but areas outside of Tokyo, such as Niigata, are only a Shinkansen ride away and boast great alpine resorts. Those who prefer the warmth would do best to fly south to Okinawa during the winter for a more subtropical climate.
Best Times to Visit Japan for Lower Prices
Japan has a reputation for being a pricey destination, but there are times of year when it's less expensive to visit. During the low season, between January and March, you may be able to find deals on airfare and hotel rooms. Prices tend to spike during the holiday season, especially around the New Year, so it's best to avoid the beginning of January if you're trying to save money.
Costs rise again in late March and April for the peak cherry blossom season and remain high throughout the spring and summer. For your best bet of scoring reasonably priced accommodations while also enjoying mild weather, aim to visit in September or October.
Best Times to Visit Tokyo Disneyland
Spring and autumn are generally the best, most temperate times of year to visit Tokyo Disneyland. It's worth avoiding weekends and national holidays â particularly Golden Week, which is one of the busiest periods at the theme park. The extreme heat in July and August can make it difficult to enjoy outdoor attractions. On the other hand, the temperatures rarely exceed 50 degrees in January and February, making those months less popular.
The period from mid-September through the beginning of December offers a combination of pleasant weather, thinner crowds, and seasonal entertainment. Spooky decorations and fall-themed events can be enjoyed in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Starting in November, the theme park celebrates the holiday season with its Christmas at Tokyo Disney Resort programming, which includes magical parades, characters in festive costumes, and heart-warming decorations that help offset the chill in the air.
Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossoms
If you're hoping to time your visit to Japan with the peak cherry blossom season, bear in mind that the bloom dates vary depending on the weather. The cherry blossom front â meticulously studied and broadcasted across the country â edges its way up, starting at the southernmost tip of Japan as early as January. The best times for cherry blossoms in Kyoto, Tokyo, and the surrounding regions are often from the last week of March to the first week of April. And for more northerly cities such as Sapporo? Don't expect to see any pink at least until May.
Best Times to Visit Japan for Food Lovers
Japan is a great destination for food lovers year-round â but it's also seasonal. So, if you have a favorite Japanese cuisine or ingredient, it's worth finding out when to visit to avoid missing out completely. Summertime treats include light, cool sĆmen noodles, kakigĆri shaved ice, and delicious unagi (eel); autumn is heaven for matsutake mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and sanma (Pacific saury); winter is all about warming nabe hot pots, citrus fruits, and kaki (persimmon); and spring goes hand in hand with sea bream, takenoko (bamboo shoots), and sakura mochi rice cakes.
Worst Times to Visit Japan
While there's no bad time to visit Japan, some months are worse than others, depending on your goals. If pleasant weather is a priority, avoid the rainy season, which typically runs from early June to mid-July throughout Japan (except in Okinawa, where it begins in May). This period is often preceded by extreme heat and humidity, with cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto being especially unbearable during the peak summer months of July and August.
Those looking to save money and avoid crowds should steer clear of Golden Week, which runs from the end of April to the beginning of May. This is when many domestic travelers take their holidays, so expect higher prices, less availability at hotels, and larger crowds.

When is the Best Time to Visit Japan?
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white](https://www.jacadatravel.com/wp-content/uploads/fly-images/424373/travel-and-leisure-award-2023-white-90x90.png)

As a truly year-round destination, the best time to visit Japan depends on what you want to do there.
The most popular times to go are spring (end of March to mid-April), when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, or autumn (November to early December), when the autumn leaves put on another spectacular colour show. But since these times attract the most tourists, you might consider going at another time so if you prefer to avoid the crowds.
Japan has four distinct seasons and is a long and skinny country, stretched out across four main islands (and some remote smaller islands too), so the weather varies from place to place. The warm summer runs from June to September when temperatures in Tokyo can exceed 31°C (88°F), and the mercury can creep towards 35°C (95°F) on the subtropical island of Okinawa .
In contrast, the winters (December to early March) can be bitterly cold. The far-reaching northern island of Hokkaido will see plenty of snow, making Japan famous for its winter activities. Tokyoâs morning temperature will drop down to 5ÂșC (41°F) and there can even be a light snow covering for a few days each winter.
Japanâs rainy season starts in mid June and can run until September. On Japanâs main island, Honshu Island, June is the rainiest month. July and August experience humidity and occasional showers, producing verdant, stunning ornate gardens. By November the rains in Tokyo are clearing up and December to February and the driest months.
Japan is a diverse country with many incredible highlights. Thereâs the towering natural wonder of Mount Fuji and the pretty town of Hakone that sits within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park at the mountain's base. Thereâs the cultural hub of Kanazawa , brimming with Geisha history and Hiroshima and Miyajima Island , a must-do destination for those interested in Japanâs past.
Monthly Climate Guide for Japan
Japan is essentially a year round destination â thereâs always a good time to be somewhere in this vast and varied country. There are so many different kinds of landscapes and environments to consider, along wtih seasonality.
To help you plan the best time to visit Japan, we’ve put together a month by month climate guide. Weâll let you know what the weather will be like in some of our favourite areas and mention the seasonal highlights too.
January in Japan
Best for snow activities.
A cold winter month where snow falls across the north of the country – perfect for snow activities and popular with both local and international ski and snowboarding crowds. Itâs possible to see a few days of snow in Tokyo in January , however average midday temperatures stay close to 10°C (50°F) in the capital.

February in Japan
Best for snow sculptures.
In the north it is still very much winter and is the peak season for snow resorts. The world renowned Sapporo Snow Festival takes place in February – where huge snow sculptures are built in Odori Park. Across the southern parts of the country the spring season is beginning and Okinwa will welcome the first of the cherry blossoms. Temperatures in Tokyo remain similarly to January, around 10°C (50°F).

March in Japan
Best for cherry blossom.
March is officially the start of spring. Famous worldwide for hanami (cherry-blossom viewing), spring in Japan could well be one of the most romantic sights youâll ever see. Keep in mind that this is also one of the busiest times for tourists in Japan. The weather feels warmer after the cold winter, although in Tokyo you will still need a warm jacket with temperatures of around 13°C (55°F). However in Okinawa itâs warmer at around 20°C (68°F).

April in Japan
Best for warmer temperatures and pretty blossoms.
The temperatures are continuing to creep up and April is the best month to see cherry blossoms across the country. Kyoto âs sites such as Silver Pagoda, Philosopherâs Walk and Nanzenji Temple are particularly beautiful at this time of year as they are framed by the soft pink blossoms. In Tokyo itâs starting to feel warm with midday temperatures reaching 19°C (66°F).

May in Japan
Best for golden week festivities.
May is a very pleasant time of year, temperatures are warm but not yet too hot to be stifling. Japanâs Golden Week takes place at the start of May with almost all of Japanâs residents taking this time as a holiday. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto can feel very busy in May with a bustling and jubilant atmosphere, and temperatures are now around 22°C (73°F). The southern regions, such as Okinwa are now starting to experience the rainy season.

June in Japan
Best to see beautiful gardens.
June is humid with increased rainfall across Japan, however the showers tend to fall sporadically, interspersed with sunshine, Tokyo will reach around 25°C (77°F). The rainy season, or tsuyu (plum rain), usually starts in mid-june and will last on and off until October. These conditions create wonderful lush green gardens. This is a spectacular time of year to visit any of Japanâs ornate gardens such as Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa.](https://www.jacadatravel.com/wp-content/uploads/fly-images/459855/AdobeStock_271975947-Kenrokuen-Garden-in-Kanazawa-By-FotoGraphic-525x295-cc.jpg)
July in Japan
Best for hiking on mount fuji.
July is another hot month, around 29°C (84°F) in Tokyo, with some rain. The hot temperatures mean that retreating to the mountains for cooler air is a good idea and hikes on the higher trails of Mount Fuji are pleasant at this time of year. Most places like shopping malls and restaurants in Japan are air conditioned, so the heat is still manageable.

August in Japan
Best for natsu matsuri (summer festivals).
August is peak summer and often the hottest month of the year. In Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto temperatures can exceed 31°C (88°F). August is also a month of many Natsu Matsuri (summer festivals) taking place across the country. Awa Odori Matsuri in Tokushima on Shikoku island is an enormous and vibrant dance festival and the Obon holiday (13th-15th August) is a Buddhist event that commemorates ancestors whose spirits return to visit relatives at this time.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Obon Festival](https://www.jacadatravel.com/wp-content/uploads/fly-images/459864/AdobeStock_217054781-Obon-festival-Japan-By-marmoset-525x295-cc.jpg)
September in Japan
Best for the start of autumn leaves and quieter travels.
September can be a wonderful month to travel to Japan as the school-holiday crowds disperse and the weather stays warm at around 27°C (81°F) on Honshu. Areas such as Osaka and Kyoto typically boast plenty of clear skies, with some brief showers. By the end of the month spectacular autumnal leaves are starting to make an appearance. Hakone and the Mount Fuji area are particularly beautiful at this time of year.Â

October in Japan
Best for the last of the warm days and autumn leaves.
October is the start of autumn and the temperatures begin to drop. The best time to visit Japan is the fall as itâs a great time to see the stunning reds, oranges and yellows of Japanâs autumn leaves. The days can still feel warm in some places. In the major cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka expect day time temperatures in the low 20s C (70s F) with chilly nights and mornings.

November in Japan
Best time to visit tokyo.
November is an autumn month with cool temperatures. In northern Hokkaido most of the autumn leaves have finished as the region transitions into winter. Further south, many would argue that November is the best time to go to Tokyo to see the city framed by beautiful orange, yellow and red autumn leaves, known as koyo. Day time temperatures stay moderate and comfortable at 16°C (61°F). November is a peak time â something to consider if youâre not a fan of crowds.

December in Japan
Best for winter celebrations.
December is the start of winter across the entire country of Japan and although temperatures are cooler, the skies usually stay clear and blue. Small bars and restaurants are full of atmosphere and end of year celebrations. Temperatures in Tokyo during the day tend to stay around 12°C (54°F) but the mornings feel chilly at 2ÂșC (35°F). Many places are closed from the end of December until a few days into January â although you can still visit most temples and shrines, as well as enjoying the great outdoors.

The Best Things to do in Japan by Season
Choosing the best time to go to Japan will depend on the sorts of activities you want to do, what youâd like to see and the places you’d like to visit . Seasonality will also be something to consider, so to help you plan your trip weâve compiled a list of our favourite things to do and the best time to do them.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.jacadatravel.com/wp-content/uploads/fly-images/352657/Japan-Cherry-Blossom-330x132-c.jpg)
See the Cherry Blossoms
The spring season between March to April is the best time to visit Japan for the cherry blossoms . This period marks the end of winter. Depending on weather conditions, the sakura season can last for a few days, up to a couple of weeks. This is also the peak season in Japan.
Keep in mind that the sakura bloom schedules can vary year-to-year, depending on temperature, and how long it lasts is a matter of luck â some years the blossoms might stay on the trees for a couple of weeks, while other times they could be felled early by strong wind or rain.
Cherry blossoms usually only bloom for around one week per location, and at slightly different times throughout the country â starting from Okinawa in early-February and moving northward to northern Hokkaido until late-May. Travel south to north to see them for longer, and check out this article to find out the best places to see cherry blossom in Japan.
See the Autumn Leaves
The best time to visit Japan to see the autumn leaves is between November to December. In areas like Hokkaido, the autumn season begins as early as mid-September while Tokyo and Kyoto see orange leaves as from mid-October.
A visit to Japan when the leaves are changing colour is really spectacular. In fact, we think it's one of the best places to spend autumn in Asia â and, thankfully, the autumn leaves tend to stick around for a bit longer than the cherry blossoms.
By late September, the leaves start changing in the north around the mountains, gradually making their way down to the central and southern cities (Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo ) by mid-October and remaining colourful into early December. Bear in mind that the autumn colours tend to peak a bit later than other places in the northern hemisphere, with the most spectacular displays often reserved for the end of November and even the beginning of December.
Autumn is the second busiest time of year to visit Japan, so itâs best to book your trip way in advance.
Experience Festival Culture
The best time to travel to Japan to enjoy events and festivals is during the summer months between June to mid-September. While it can get quite humid throughout this period, you get to catch a glimpse of the local culture. This is a great time to visit Japan to skip the crowds.
Summertime brings with it many of Japanâs best festivals (or 'matsuri) â including Kyotoâs Gion Matsuri, Osakaâs Tenjin Matsuri, Aomoriâs Nebuta Matsuri, and the Awa Odori festival in Tokushima on the island of Shikoku.
This season is also renowned for dazzling fireworks displays, or 'hanabi taikai'. Tokyoâs Sumida River Fireworks are particularly deserving of a mention, but there are plenty of events throughout the country.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Japanese macaque, Snow monkey](https://www.jacadatravel.com/wp-content/uploads/fly-images/459909/AdobeStock_284378735-Japanese-macaque-By-Peter-AdamsDanita-Delimont-330x132-c.jpg)
See the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani
If youâd like to see some of Japanâs resident wildlife, then consider a trip to the Snow Monkey Park in the winter. December and January are the best months to visit Jigokudani to witness the many Japanese macaques warming up in the naturally warm waters.
Natural hot springs shroud the park in steam, and itâs this steaming hot appearance that got the park the moniker, Jigokudani, meaning 'hell valley'. However, this is far from true for the monkeys who retreat to the heavenly hot water to warm themselves over the long winter months.
These monkeys are native to Japan and although they do visit the park all year, there is something incredible about witnessing the steaming waters shrouding families of monkeys with a backdrop of brilliant white snow.
Go Skiing and Snowboarding
Late-December to March is the best time to visit Japan for snow activities like skiing and snowboarding. The best months to travel to Japan for its winter festivals are January and February. Occasional snowfall is expected between March and April.
Japan's ski season runs as late as May in some areas, although the best time to hit the slopes depends where you're going.
Snow usually arrives mid-November on the north island of Hokkaido, with the earliest resorts opening during the third week of that month â Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro are usually the first of the big resorts to welcome skiers and boarders.
March and April are great for both in-resort and backcountry snow sports. The plentiful early-season snow ensures resort conditions are excellent right until the end of the season and, at this time, the clear weather affords stunning views.
Winter activities
The best time to visit Japan to see Mount Fuji is during late autumn to early spring, throughout the months of November to February. This period sees clear skies and fewer clouds. Early mornings are when you get to enjoy unobstructed views of Mount Fuji.
During these months you can also catch a glimpse of the cherry blossoms or autumn leaves in Japan. The best place to see Mount Fuji is at Lake Kawaguchi.
Keep in mind that between April and August, the mountain can be hidden behind clouds and haze, while typhoon season begins in September. This means that your chances of spotting Mount Fuji are significantly lower.

When is the best time to visit Japan?
It depends on what type of trip youâre looking to take. However, spring and autumn tend to be the most beautiful weather-wise. Weâd recommend a trip between March and May or September and November. If youâre looking to steer clear of crowds, then a trip in May after Golden Week is for you.
When is the best time to visit Japan for cherry blossoms?
Cherry blossom season is one of the most popular times to visit Japan. Crowds of people excitedly welcome spring with the blooming of the beautiful Sakuras, with various festivals popping up across the country to celebrate.
The blooming timeline does depend on what region of Japan youâre in. For example, the bloom time in southern Japan is slightly earlier than the other regions, while the middle of April is the peak month for Tokyo. We recommend checking out the cherry blossom forecast via the Japan Meteorological Corporation if you want more information on the regions youâll visit.

When Are The Best Times Of Year To Visit Japan For Cherry Blossom?
Known in Japan as Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom is one of the most atmospheric Japanese experiences for travellers and is symbolic in the country as a symbol of beauty and vitality. At certain times of year, guests of hotels in Shinjuku Tokyo and other cities can enjoy the beautiful pink-white blooms of these stunning trees.
But not all year round. The bursts of colour from the Sakura are fleeting in their plumage, only flowering for one to two weeks at a time. The timings are different too, depending on the weather and the area that youâre visiting. From Fukuoka to Suppora, guests of Shinjuku hotels could theoretically tour with the blooms, witnessing the spectacle in each of its locations.
Whilst this would take considerable planning to organise, itâs still worth finding out when the blooming of cherry blossom is due to arrive in the area youâre visiting. This blog will outline the best times for guests of the Prince Hotel Shizukuishi and other accommodation to see concentrations of cherry blossoms in the forthcoming 2023.
Springtime In Japan
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms Springtime In Japan](https://www.princehotels.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Springtime-In-Japan.jpg)
Generally speaking, spring is the best time of year for guests of the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Tokyo Japan to enjoy the cherry blossoms of Japan. As with many flowers, the warmer weather helps but cherry blossoms are especially virile in sheltered spots that are moist but well drained. This is why they do so well in cities.
Estimating 2023
Unfortunately, the estimated times for cherry blossom fruiting in all regions of Japan have not yet been announced. However, guests of hotels near Shinagawa Station can estimate the timings of 2023 by looking at the dates that they blossomed in 2022. Below are the dates that cherry blossoms bloomed in Japanâs major cities last year.
In Tokyo, Japanâs capital city, cherry blossoms bloomed around the 23rd of March and fully bloomed by the 30th of March.
In Kyoto, in Japanâs Kansai region, cherry blossoms opened around March 27th and fully bloomed by April the 4th.
Another major city in the Kansai region, Osakaâs cherry blossom trees opened roughly around the 24th of March and fully bloomed by April 4th, similar to their neighbouring city of Kyoto.
The Chubu regionâs city of Nagoya saw cherry blossoms open on March 24th and fully bloom by April 2nd.
The coastal city of Yokohama in Kanagawa ken bloomed around March 25th and fully bloomed by April 5th.
Northern Kyushuâs city of Fukuoka saw cherry blossoms open up around the 20th of March and fully bloom around the 29th of the same month.
Announcements For 2023
As you can see, most cities in Japan see blooms occur around late March and full blooms by early April, with southern cities seeing slightly earlier blooms. Unfortunately, we wonât get forecasted dates for 2023 until at least the 2nd week of January, but expect similar results to 2022. This does depend on weather patterns during these periods though. You can expect bloomings more generally across the country between April and May.

The Royal Tour
Cherry blossoms, gardens, and restaurants in japan (plus a senior perspective on travel in japan).
Editorâs note: it is kind of fun to read someone else âs take on the exact same trip I took, which is exactly what youâll get here from Jackie, my mom. While you can read my guides to Tokyo here , and the Kansai region here , I hope youâll all enjoy her experience as well, especially what it meant traveling to Japan as a senior. For more of Jackieâs writing, make sure to click here for her index page .
We had a wonderful two week trip to Japan, seeing gardens, temples, shrines, castles, museums, hot springs, a digital art show, and various districts of Tokyo and Kyoto. We stayed in hotels near public transportation (in two cases within a block or two of the main train station; in the third place a block from two subway lines) so that we could utilize our time well and use most of our energy to see the various sites rather than getting to/from the trains.
This article will be my main impressions of the trip and, likely, I will mention places which Jonathan has written about as well. I also will give a few suggestions for seniors.
My overwhelming best impression of our recent trip to Japan was the cherry blossoms. I had hoped that we would see cherry blossoms in the public gardens or around some of the temples or shrines, but the reality was so much better! Yes, we saw them in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo (which had many different kinds) as well as the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. But we also saw them along the train tracks, near the temples and shrines, at Odawara and Osaka castles, and even in the hills. They were white and various shades of pink. Many looked like conventional flowering trees and some looked more like weeping willows! Some places had various colors/species and others just had a single color/kind. In one kind of cherry tree, we saw lots of birds hopping around, but did not see that on other kinds! I am including just a very tiny sample of the many pictures I took. I never got tired of looking at them or snapping pictures.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://i0.wp.com/theroyaltourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/collage-of-cherry-blossoms-1.jpg?resize=720%2C602&ssl=1)
The Japanese people also are excited about cherry blossoms. At Yoyogi Park, we saw many people with blue tarps (which look the same as the tarps people put on their roofs when their roofs leak). People sat on the tarps near or under the cherry trees, playing games (cards, Monopoly) or eating, and clearly enjoying the beauty. As an aside, cherry blossom is Sakura in Japanese, and one can buy various foods and drinks with this flavor, including ice cream and lattes and more.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://i0.wp.com/theroyaltourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/img_2104-1.jpg?resize=720%2C960&ssl=1)
In addition to the cherry trees, the gardens and grounds of the various temple, shrines, palaces, and pavilions were also beautiful and serene with lots of water, flowering plants, and shaped bushes. There were also flowers along sidewalks and near some buildings. Nearly everything was very clean with almost no trash and no graffiti. By the way, there were also very few trash cans, so sometimes we just had to take our trash with us.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://i0.wp.com/theroyaltourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/collage-of-beautiful-gardens-1.jpg?resize=720%2C992&ssl=1)
Another surprising thing in Japan is that most of the restaurants are very small and do not seem to be parts of any chains. They specialized in just one or two main dishes (with variations) such as ramen, udon, soba, Japanese fried chicken, sushi, Kobe beef, okonomiyaki (a thick pancake from Osaka), and more. We were able to eat in these places while still catering to my dietary restrictions so that I could always find something on the menu. Did you know, for instance, that most ramen is cooked in pork broth (which I donât eat)? I didnât either, but we found out and ate in ramen places that cooked it in a soy or miso base.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://i0.wp.com/theroyaltourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/img_2093-1.jpg?resize=720%2C540&ssl=1)
The restaurants appear to be owned and operated by individuals with just a few workers (perhaps family members). One of the most memorable dinners was a small restaurant (with good ratings). We may have been the only patrons when we sat down and someone (I assume the owner/cook) helped to guide us through the menu to pick items to share family style that we would all enjoy. The food was terrific, but his warmth as well as that of a woman (his wife?) was what made it so special. Some restaurants do not have English menus and some were cash only, so you might want to make sure before you enter. The train stations had many restaurants, so we sometimes just went there for breakfast or dinner.
The exchange rate was in our favor while we were in Japan, so lunch or dinner was almost always less than $20/person and often closer to $10/person. The only exceptions were a fancy Kobe beef lunch and a fancy sushi dinner.
Traveling as a Senior in Japan
I was extremely surprised that we saw very few seniors on the trains and subways. Perhaps this is due to a couple of factors. (1) Very often no one gave up their seat for seniors. We even saw a disabled man who was using a walking stick/cane who only got a seat when someone got off (we were standing at the time). We often got seats after one or two stops because people got off or someone offered a seat, but donât count on it. (2) Getting to the tracks was also a challenge. Sometimes we found an elevator or escalator, but often we didnât and had to walk up or down full flights of stairs.
Although there was more mask-wearing than in the US, it was still a small percentage â perhaps 10%.
The train stations in Tokyo and Kyoto are very large, so we often had to walk a long distance to the tracks. The Tokyo one was rather confusing too, and we had a challenging time meeting up with other members of our party since we had difficulty finding the connection between two different parts of the station. There were crowds in the train stations, especially at rush hour, and along some streets.
There are very few benches along the street and in some of the parks and temples and shrines. For example, to get to the Meiji Jingu Shinto Shrine in Tokyo was a long walk with absolutely no benches or walls to rest on.
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://i0.wp.com/theroyaltourblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/img_2110-1.jpg?resize=720%2C960&ssl=1)
Some restaurants do not have tables and chairs; instead they have tables you stand at or tables where you sit on the floor.
Drivers drive on the left side of the street, so be careful stepping off the curb. Also, often there are bicycles on the sidewalks. Some pedestrians walk on the left, but others do not.
All in all, we had a great trip to Japan and highly recommend visiting Japan, especially in spring.

![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/yoshinoyama_cherry_blossoms_nara_japan.jpg)
Abundance of pink sakura over the beautiful mountain is a typical phenomenon of Mount Yoshino . Located within Yoshino-Kumano National Park which is listed to UNESCO World Heritage Site , Yoshinoyama is place of scenic beauty with tranquil atmosphere all over it.
Nara Prefectureâs Yoshinoyama is said to be one of Japanâs greatest cherry blossom viewing spots of all time.
The mountain is divided into four distinct areas: The Shimo Senbon, Naka Senbon, Kami Senbon, and Oku Senbon with attractive hiking trails, viewpoints, parks, temples & shrines, historic buildings, and food stalls.
There are about 30,000 cherry trees of many different varieties in the slopes of the mountain. Alongside viewing sakura, itâs well worth the visit the national treasure such as Kinpusenji Temple, Yoshimizu Shrine and Yoshimizu Shrine .
I myself believe that one of the many things worth mentioning about the mountain is how lovely everything is. From the beautiful hiking trails that offer you peaceful walk to the observation platforms that provide picture-perfect scenery of pink cherry blossoms.
Please note the full bloom period is between early April and mid April .
2) Himeji Castle, Hyogo
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/himeji_castle_cherry_blossoms.jpg)
Himeji Castle is a Must-See destination in Japan that was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1993. Itâs one of the 12 original castles of Japan.
One interesting fact about this castle is that it was never demolished by earthquake, war, or fire. When I think of my favorite places to visit in the Kansai Region , Himeji Castle comes to mind. What about yours?
The castle grounds are large with a lot of things to discover including wooden bridge, gates, hundreds of cherry trees and easy walkways.
Both inner and outer grounds feature many cherry trees, and they look absolutely mind-boggling when they are at full bloom. Early April is the best time to see sakura at Himaji Castle.
The beauty of the castle with sakura canât be described in words. You can just feel it! As a visitor, you should visit the entire complex of the castle and thus how you discover the castleâs main keep, towers, gates, bridge, gardens, and other buildings.
Go inside the main keep and explore what it stores. It takes about a-10 minute walk from the JR Himaji Station .
3) Kakunodate, Akita
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/kakunodate_cherry_blossoms_akita.jpg)
Kakunodate samurai district (former castle town) is a well-known historic site of Akita Prefecture .
If you are on a mission to experience both cherry blossom and samurai architecture in one single place, this without question is the ideal place to fulfill your dream. Whether it is spring or autumn, a visit to this samurai district would seem to you like stepping back in time.
Itâs a great place to visit, blessed with the beautiful samurai houses and hundreds of cherry trees both in the samurai district and the Hinokinai Riverside . This well-preserved samurai village has beautiful streets to walk along.
While taking a walk along the streets you would be mesmerized with the surrounding views of many weeping cherry trees, and hundreds years old samurai residences.
In addition, you are suggested to picnic under the cherry trees found along the banks of Hinokinai River. The sakura trees you see there are not weeping cherry, but famous Somei Yoshino .
No doubt, this is where history comes alive! If you think so then donât wait anymore, itâs time! Just make a travel plan on your own and head towards this amazing hanami spots. Please note the best time to see sakura here is late April.

4) Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/shinjuku_gyoen_sakura_tokyo.jpg)
Tokyo is a unique city with fascinating history and many tourist attractions. Most of the people think of visiting either Kyoto or Tokyo when they are to visit Japan for the first time to see cherry blossom.
If you agree with the statement, then there is nothing much to say about Tokyo. To be honest with you, this city has got everything to make your trip a great adventure.
Shinjuku Gyoen is considered one of the largest and popular parks in the city. Because of the time, often foreign visitors are confused which one to visit – Shinjuku Gyoen or Ueno Park ?!
Both are exclusive hanami spots in Tokyo and my advice to them is âVisit Shinjuku Gyoen in the morning and stay there until late afternoon, and go to Ueno Park in the evening as sakura trees there are illuminated majestically.â
More than one thousand cherry trees can be found in this park, and they are scattered throughout the park. According to many, during hanami Ueno Park gets crowded, while Shinjuku Gyoen is not, with lots of areas to roam around and enjoy hanami in a peaceful atmosphere.
From late March to early April is said the best time to see sakura there.
5) Kawazu, Shizuoka
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/kawazu_zakura_shizuoka.jpg)
Located on the east coast of Izu Peninsula , Kawazu is a small town that boats of being one of the most popular earliest blooming sakura viewing spots in the land of the rising sun. Kawazu-zakura, a kind of early blooming sakura is the symbol of the town.
Its bright pink color petal is very appealing to see. You will be happy to know that the town âKawazuâ has approximately 8,000 cherry trees. The river âKawazuâ that runs through the town is lined with thousands cherry trees.
Most of the trees can be found along the banks of the Kawazu River . They start blooming around early February, though the best time to see sakura here is from late February to early March.
With dazzling views of pink Kawazu-zakura, visitors like having various local foods and buying souvenirs from the festival stalls. Trees are lit up in the evening during the festival.
If you are going to visit Tokyo around late February then you should put this hanami spot on your travel bucket list. Donât you forget that the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival is a must see event in Japan in February , especially for nature lovers.
6) Philosopherâs Path, Kyoto
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/tetsugaku_no_michi_sakura_kyoto.jpg)
Imagine yourself in a scenic place where you are talking a walk along the path lined by sakura trees. That would be an amazing moment for you, wonât it be?
Maybe itâs a dream now, but you can take this dream from imagination to reality right there at Philosopherâs Path ( Tetsugaku no michi ) in Kyoto. This is Kyotoâs one of the most recommended cherry blossom viewing spots.
Kyoto is famous for enjoying hanami out there with many sakura viewing spots that are recognized countryâs most popular. Choosing Philosopherâs Path ahead of Maruyama Park as top 10 hanami spots in Japan is fair, no doubt!
Itâs a two kilometer long stone path (stretches from Nanzenji Temple to Ginkakuji Temple), located northern part of Kyotoâs Higashiyama district. It follows a canal that is lined by hundreds of sakura trees.
While walking along the canal, you must admire the beauty of sakura. Besides, explore the temples you find on the way.

7) Hirosaki Castle Park, Aomori
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/hirosaki_castle_park_mount_iwaki_aomori.jpg)
Aomori Prefecture has some amazing attractions to make your trip memorable. One of Aomoriâs famous seasonal attractions is called Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival.
Usually, the festival takes place between late April and early May at Hirosaki Castle Park. This popular hanami spot often regarded as the best in the Tohoku region .
Tohoku is blessed with many exciting hanami spots together with this one. Therefore, if you somehow miss viewing sakura either in Kanto or Kansai regions, then head towards Tohoku and enjoy beautiful sakura blossoms out there.
Located in the northern part of Honshu Island, this impressive hanami spot offers you an amazing place to picnic under the cherry blossoms. There are about 2,500 cherry trees including food stalls, paths, moats, bridges, and castle main keep to make you amaze with.
The view of Mount Iwaki from the castle grounds is breathtakingly awesome! There is nothing in the park that could make you fell boring.
Alongside viewing sakura, visitors are offered to enjoy pleasant boat trip. While on the other hand, visitors can have some fun with the rental rowing boats in the moats.
Please note this sakura viewing spot is considered one of the best places of shooting sakura in Japan.
8) Matsumae Park, Hokkaido
![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/matsumae_castle_hakodate_hokkaido.jpg)
In search of a fantastic picnic spot in Hokkaido in spring, there is one exclusive place that I want you to visit. Thatâs Matsumae Park!
You will be overwhelmed knowing that Matsumae Park houses 10,000 cherry trees of around 250 different varieties. How cool is that! In this castle park, you find abundance of sakura than Hirosaki Castle Park.
Matsumae Castle, one of Edo period castles in Japan is the only Japanese style castle in the entire Hokkaido region. In comparison with Himeji Castle, the castle keep is far smaller in size, but go beyond when it comes to talking about the total number of cherry trees.
This is obviously the best hanami spot in Hokkaido, though if you ever visit this place; make sure you pay a visit to Hakodateâs Fort Goryokaku. Viewing cherry blossom is also impressive there.
From hanami picnicking to pleasant stroll along the parkâs walkways and other important buildings like Kozenji Temple, and Matsumae Shrine, you never know how wonderful trip it would be in the end. Visit the park in early May and you will experience the peak sakura season.

![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/lake_kawaguchiko_sakura_mount_fuji_japan.jpg)
A visit to Japan without experiencing the majestic views of Mount Fuji sounds like your trip is not over yet, and you still have got something to explore. Lake Kawaguchiko is one of the five beautiful lakes of Fujigoko in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Famous for its longest shoreline of any of the Fuji Five Lakes , amazing view of Mount Fuji, and cherry blossom viewing, Lake Kawaguchiko is a perfect destination for a day trip.
The best area to witness both the sakura and magnificent Mount Fuji views over the lake lies along the promenade, located east of the Kawaguchiko Music Forest.
The surrounding nature of the lake at any time of year is very awe-inspiring, especially when sakura are at full bloom with majestic view of Mount Fuji. There are endless areas to stop by for taking beautiful nature photographs.

![best time to visit japan for cherry blossoms](https://www.kyuhoshi.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/kema_sakuranomiya_park_hanami_osaka.jpg)
Osaka is a delightful city where visitors are offered to do a lot of things including culture experiences and activities. If you have never been to Osaka before then itâs going to be a place of wonders.
Cherry blossom in Osaka reaches its peak (best time) is in early April. This is the average sakura forecast of Osaka though time may vary depending on the weather of year.
Kema Sakuranomiya Park is one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, and top one in Osaka city. Itâs a riverside park with approximately 4,800 sakura trees on the banks of Okawa River.
The locals enjoy walking along the walkways of the river banks year-round, but during spring they are accompanied by thousands of foreign visitors.
Some visitors to the park would like to picnic under the cherry blossoms while some would go for a pleasant stroll along the designated walking trails. This park also famous for Yozakura (night sakura) as the sakura trees are lit up magnificently in the evening.

How many days is enough to visit Japan?
When youâre thinking about how many days is enough to explore Japan properly, itâs worth remembering that it takes around 14 hours to fly non-stop from London to Tokyo. You might want to factor in a day or two to acclimatise and recover at the start of your trip and adjust to the new time zone â Japan is nine hours ahead of the UK.
Japan is an incredible country to explore, and if youâre only planning on visiting once, youâll want to make the most of your time there and factor in plenty of time to see the highlights. That will include Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka as an absolute minimum for most people. To make exploring simple, a Japan cruise can be way to travel effortlessly around the country, as can a guided group tour , but be sure to choose an itinerary that allows you to experience a ride on a bullet train and catch the view from Mount Fuji.
The exact number of days youâll need in Japan depends on what you want to do and see. We recommend around 10 days to ensure you have enough time to explore Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Mount Fuji, and some of the other fascinating sights in between.
When is the best time to visit Japan for cherry blossom season?
The most popular areas for cherry blossom (known as sakura ) experience the bloom in March and April. If you travel around this time of year, you should have a good chance of seeing the powder-pink floral display, particularly if your itinerary takes you to different parts of Japan. The cherry blossom usually emerges in the south of the country first, at the end of March, and spreads north over the following weeks.
SEE THE CHERRY BLOSSOM WITH GH
Cherry blossoms only bloom for around a week or two, appearing at slightly different times in different locations. Add to the equation that there are different varieties and you can see why the exact dates are tricky to pin down. In addition, a scientific study has found that human-induced climate change is bringing the flowering forwards, too.
By 2100, researchers from the Met Office and Osaka Metropolitan University expect the date of peak blossom will be a full 17 days earlier. For now, visit in March or April for the best chance of seeing this unforgettable floral spectacle.
When is peak season in Japan?
The cherry blossom season is, not surprisingly, one of the most popular times of year to visit Japan, and the prices of holidays during this time tend to reflect this demand. Booking ahead can help spread the cost of a holiday to Japan, and you can already book your spot on a 2025 Japan cruise with Good Housekeeping.

When is the cheapest month to visit Japan?
If cherry blossom viewing isnât top of your Japan to-do list, then you might want to consider visiting at a cheaper time of the year. Except for New Year, the off-peak season in Japan is late autumn to early spring. Itâs cooler, drier, and quieter, which can suit some travellers better.
What's the best month to cruise in Japan?
Cruise companies sail around Japan throughout the year, with many of their itineraries timed around the blossoming sakura in springtime.
However, many Japan cruise itineraries take in other annual celebrations. Plan your Japan holiday for August and you'll find sailings that take in Nebuta Matsuri, an annual festival held in the port city of Aomori every year in early August. The six-day spectacle comprises of numerous parades involving lantern floats, marching bands, dancing and fireworks. Other Japan cruise itineraries revolve around The Kumano Fireworks Festival, held on August 17th every year in the city of Kumano in Mie Prefecture. You can enjoy the dazzling fireshow from the comfort of your cruise ship instead of battling against the crowds on Shichirimihama Beach, all vying for the best viewing spot.
If it's sun, sea and sand that you're after, book onto a Japan cruise around Okinawa and the Southwest Islands in late spring, summer or very early autumn. Temperatures will be warm, so you can make the most of the picturesque beaches, walking trails and seaside resorts, and book onto outdoor and water-based shore excursions that your cruise company may be offering.

Visiting Japan in spring (late March to May)
With its mild weather and blossoming trees, spring is a wonderful time of year to explore Japan. As we've mentioned, it's the most popular season among visitors who travel far and wide to witness the Japanese sakura. Celebrated everywhere, from Tokyo to Hiroshima, it's when you can see nature's fleeting beauty and visit various locations for hanami (cherry blossom viewing).
Top spots in Kyoto are the Botanical Garden, Philosopher's Path and Maruyama Park. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Yoyogi Park, the Nakameguro neighbourhood, Shinjuku Gyoen, the Meguro River and Chidorigafuchi Moat make for terrific cherry blossom viewing.
Elsewhere, Mount Yoshino in the Nara Prefecture is the most famous sakura site and has around 30,000 cherry trees covering the mountain. Spring is also an excellent time to see the magical wisteria tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Fukuoka.
VISIT JAPAN
Visiting Japan in summer (June to August)
Summer brings hot and humid conditions to Japan, making it the perfect time to escape to the mountains. If you're looking to get active, July to mid-September is Mount Fuji's climbing season. You'll find many people hiking up and down the volcano in the summer months, but if you wish to get away from the crowds you might want to head to the north of Japan to the main island of Hokkaido.
Known for its natural hot springs and national parks, Hokkaido offers mild summer weather. It's during this season that you can enjoy the bright carpet of flowers covering the hills and mountains. Some of the flower types are only found in Hokkaido thanks to its peculiar climate and you'll also witness rows upon rows of tulips, lavender and sunflowers in a beautiful display.

Visiting Japan in autumn (September to November)
Autumn in Japan offers the opportunity to experience leaf peeping at its very best. Vibrant red and orange leaves fall from the trees and it's a chance to get out and about to see nature's beauty. Kyoto is a popular place for autumn holidays, with Nanzen-ji Temple, the mountain village of Takao and Imperial Palace Park known as some of the picturesque spots to see the changing colours of the leaves.
Other leaf-peeping highlights around Japan include Tokyo's Rikugien Garden and Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue, where the ginkgo trees turn bright yellow in autumn. Hiroshima's maple trees are also putting on a magnificent display, and in Kagawa, the Ritsurin Garden Autumn Illumination is a three-day light event showing the autumn colours at night.
TOUR JAPAN IN AUTUMN WITH GH
Visiting Japan in winter (December to early March)
This is the time to get active and head for the ski slopes in Japan. The winter ski season runs from the end of November to the end of March and you'll find top-quality snow in the resorts of Appi Kogen, Niseko, Furano and Hakuba. Wildlife lovers will also love the winter months, as they're when you can spot snow monkeys at the Jigokudani Monkey Park (December to March), whooper swans in Hokkaido (October to March) and Steller's sea eagles in Hokkaido (first two weeks of February).
If you prefer hotter climes, you can bask in the winter sun of Okinawa, located between mainland Japan and Taiwan. The island offers a tropical climate, white sand beaches and the bluest of waters, with highs of 21 degrees in December.
The best time to visit Tokyo
Planning a city break and want to head straight for Tokyo? The best time to visit is between March and April or September and November while avoiding the capital during the height of summer. During spring and autumn, the weather is milder and less humid, plus there's little rainfall, so weather-wise, it's a dream.
For the most beautiful scenes, March and April are your best bet if you want to marvel at Tokyo's cherry blossom displays and even though it's popular among visitors, you'll avoid the school holiday crowds.

Is there a worst time to visit Japan?
We all love different things on holiday â what one person loves, another will want to steer clear of. So, if youâre wondering if thereâs a worse time to visit Japan, consider your own likes and dislikes. For instance, if you love clear and sunny skies, youâll want to avoid the rainy season, typically between June and July. If you canât bear intense humidity and soaring mercury, you may want to avoid the height of the summer â July and August â particularly in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto.
Those who like to explore sights without crowds should note when Golden Week is. Golden Week is a major Japanese holiday period, so thereâs lots of domestic travel during this time. In 2024 and 2025, Golden Week is between 29 April and 5 May. That said, many find that Tokyo can be quieter over Golden Week when Tokyo residents escape the city.
