Bass Drum of Death (formed in 2008) is an America lo-fi garage rock band hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, in the U.S.

In 2008 John Barrett formed Bass Drum of Death as a musical outlet for his lo-fi, grunge sound. The singer and multi-instrumentalist performs and records all of his own material, and up until 2008 would tour as a one-man-band playing bass drum and guitar. In 2008 Barrett released the band’s debut EP entitled “Stain Stick Skin” on Fat Possum Records, featuring the single of the same name and “The Ballad of Bandit X”.

Following the release Bass Drum of Death toured around areas of the U.S. this time with a touring band consisting of two guitars and drums. In 2010 arrived the follow-up EP “High School Roaches”, succeeded by the band’s full-length debut “GB City” in 2011. The LP was once again released by Fat Possum Records with vinyl editions distributed through Inflated Records. The album became a popular feature of the lo-fi, garage rock genre and spawned the singles “Young Pros”, “Get Found” and “High School Roaches”.

The band has subsequently released the albums the self-titled “Bass Drum of Death” in 2013 and “Rip This” in 2014. On top of this due to the accessible upbeat tempo of Barrett’s songs, Bass Drum of Death has contributed to the soundtracks of “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, “The Vampire Diaries”, “Grand Theft Auto” and the BBC TV show “Waterloo Road”.

Live reviews

Live review Bass Drum of Death - sweaty garage mayhem Visits from John Barrett's speed-riffing garage rock outfit 'Bass Drum of Death' are getting almost as regular as those of the craggy grandfather of punk, Iggy Pop, and a welcome reminder that the spirit of 'Raw Power' lives on. Oxford, Mississippi might be a long way from the Detroit, Michigan of the late 60s/early 70s, but as a heaving mob of sweaty fans in the back room of the Shacklewell Arms on Thursday night can testify - the vibe lives on through Bass Drum of Death. Barrett, plus drummer (and seemingly permanent band member) Len Clark and an unnamed guitar-for-hire tore through double-time renditions of some of the hottest tracks from the first two albums - Nerve Jamming, GB City, Get Found, Velvet Itch, I Wanna Be Forgotten, Bad Reputation et al - as well as showcasing selection of songs from their latest release 'Rip This'. As always, there's the feeling that BDOD should be playing to bigger crowds in larger venues but there's something about their 'Room above a pub' DIY tour aesthetic that makes every gig seem like the right place at the right time. The Shacklewell gig was no exception. The typically aloof Barrett seemed wholly at home in his surroundings and, bar a couple of technical hitches, the gig flew through the chilly November night like a supersonic jet, before crash-landing into the ever-wilder, room-wide moshpit with a screech of feedback. With a brief encore comprising a spiky cover of 'Spirit in the Sky' it was over - and all too soon. But you know they'll be back...

Even as you are watching Bass Drum Of Death it can be hard to believe that such a thick sound can come from so few people. 2 Guitarists and a drummer make all the racket you could ever need as the band career through their set of scuzzy, garage bangers.

The energy never drops. Fast paced riffs come one after the other, daring the audience to keep up which they almost always do, frantically losing their minds to the thrashing guitars. The most amazing thing about Bass Drum of Death though is how current they manage to sound whilst playing a style of rock arguably more reminiscent of the 70s than the 21st century. But as they continue to end up on bigger stages with even larger groups of people losing their minds you realise that Bass Drum of Death aren’t about nostalgia, they are just about putting on a gut-punching live show in the simplest way possible.

If you Go see Bass Drum of Death, expect to be rocked the hell out, no strings attached.

Excellent gig.

Sunflower Lounge is a great venue.

The atmosphere was buzzing. Really good vibe. The drink prices are reasonable too and the bar staff are quick so you don't miss the action.

Support band weren't my thing. Bit wishy washy. Bass Drum were awesome though. So much energy! Played well and

There were pits and crows surfers as a result.

Really good gig. Great audience!

I was surprised on how great this show turned out! The show was wild and fun! The people were great and so was the location. The echo could defiantly use a little touch ups, others wise you will have a blast. I will definitely be going to more shows like this!

Bass Drum Of Death was so f";@*$; awesome live! Glad they tagged along with Royal Blood, they were rad too! Very fun bands and crowd. Broke my glasses in a mosh pit but it was so worth it. I definitely hope to see more from these guys.

Release Description

The point of an odyssey is to return home changed—still the same person, but deepened somehow, wiser and better, wearing your traveling scars proudly. Bass Drum of Death’s new album Say I Won’t is the end result of a journey that took singer and bandleader John Barrett from a small town in Mississippi and sent him across the world and back home again. The music still rips, with blown-out guitars and drums that sound like bombs going off, and the melodies are catchier than ever, hollered in Barrett’s trademark yelp. But the music hits differently now, more at peace with itself, propelled by a new swagger. Say I Won’t is the record of a veteran band finding its stride and leaning into it, stripping back the excess and finding the raw core of their sound.

Say I Won’t, the band’s fifth record, comes at a time of massive change for Barrett, having relocated from New York to his hometown of Oxford, Mississippi during the pandemic. The record is also a homecoming of a different sort, with the band rejoining the ranks of Fat Possum, also in Oxford, the label that released their first record GB City in 2011.

“Moving back to Oxford was a much-needed reset,” says Barrett. “When I started, I just wanted to play in a punk band and drink beers and travel around. I didn’t really think much past that. And I got really burned out. When I moved back home, I started writing songs again, just for fun. I realized I wanted this record to have more of a hometown feel. The switch back to Fat Possum was easy. It’s much better working with people I know and love and love everything they do.”

Say I Won’t is the first Bass Drum of Death album written, demoed, and recorded with the touring band instead of Barrett doing everything on his own. He found a freedom in working with collaborators that wasn’t available to him before, opening different aspects of the songwriting. It was a process of live recording, layering on different parts and overdubs, and then stripping it all back to the bones of the song, keeping the raw wild heart of the music intact.

“My first two records were made entirely by me alone with my gear, my laptop, and a Snowball USB mic,” says Barrett. “They were just made quickly, cheaply, as an excuse to tour. I wanted to take my time with this record. Make something good that I was proud of in itself.”

The band recorded the new record with Patrick Carney of the Black Keys at Audio Eagle Studios in Nashville. “It’s basically Pat’s house,” says Barrett. “It was like a playground. We set up and ripped through the songs live. The control room and the recording room are on two different floors, so we’d play a song and Pat would come running down the stairs, telling us little things to change.”

The result is a groove-oriented, 1970’s-indebted collection of rock songs, with tempos set for cruising and scuzzy guitars galore. There’s an energy and vitality to the music that feels in line with the best of the Bass Drum songs, but with an added boost that comes from new bandmates and a new perspective.

Album opener “Find It” is a perfect embodiment of the band’s new era, an urgent blast of Britpop-tinged punk, all riffs and hooks over drummer Ian Kirkpatrick’s steady thundering beat. The song finds Barrett in a reflective mood, as he sings, “I know all the world around me’s crumbling/I’m left holding the bag and stumbling/Who knows, I might be the problem.” It’s a new, more sober perspective for the lifelong rocker, with the added potency that comes from taking responsibility for one’s own life and problems.

“It’s a reference to my own personal issues, chemical or otherwise,” says Barrett. “The song is about how the place you live, be it small town Mississippi or New York, is irrelevant. Nothing really matters unless you change yourself. That’s on you.”

“Say Your Prayers” is a collaboration with Mike Kerr of Royal Blood. A midtempo bruiser that finds Barrett snarling, “The wolf is in your bed/But the Devil’s knocking at your door.” It’s all attitude, with mountains of sludge-slathered riffs, tangled harmonies courtesy of brother Jim Barrett, and a stomping beat fit for a movie car chase scene.

“That song is about seeing somebody at a party and knowing it’s bad news,” says Barrett, “a kind of Medusa-like situation. It’s about temptation and succumbing to it, and the consequences of that. I guess in a way it’s a breakup song.”

Say I Won’t finds a reinvigorated Barrett firing at all cylinders, backed by his best band yet. It’s Bass Drum of Death at their loosest and scuzziest and most tuneful, a true rock record in all the right ways. It’s a throwback by way of moving forward, sporting a maturity and swagger that comes from a decade of playing music on the road and surviving to tell about it. More than anything, Say I Won’t is a blast to listen to, music built for driving with your stereo cranked.

“I had to relearn that making music is fucking fun,” says Barrett, “and you should have fun doing it. If it’s miserable, what’s the point?” He laughs. “But man, when a song hits, it’s the best feeling in the world. That’s what this record is about. Getting back to that good place and staying there.”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

The ‘unlikely’ BBC News presenter about to smash Glastonbury 2024 with drum and bass set

Festival goers at Glastonbury Festival.

BBC News presenter Ros Atkins has explained the incredible backstory behind his shock inclusion on the Glastonbury 2024 line-up .

Ros, 50, has been with the BBC since 2001 and is best known for being the channel’s ‘explainer in chief’, giving many memorable broadcasts in his time.

But before he was informing the nation about things such as Partygate, Ros had a former life as a drum and bass DJ , where played live sets at raves in Cornwall.

And it appears he’s ready to get back on the wheels of steel after securing a spot on the Glastonbury line-up – this year the festival runs from June 26 to June 30.

On Twitter, he said: ‘In an unlikely development, I’m going to be doing a drum and bass set at Glastonbury. And, not at all unreasonably, quite a few people have asked me variations on “How did that happen?!”‘

He then explained that, in 2022, after doing an interview about his days as a DJ, contacts at the BBC and at a Soho nightclub asked Ros if he’d fancy doing a live set for them.

That resulted in Ros being taught new ways of DJing, moving away from vinyl records and onto digital equipment, learning new techniques from some of his biggest drum and bass idols.

And now he’s lined up to grace the The Park as part of its now legendary The Stonebridge event, where organisers promise ‘debauched beats’ and ‘back-to-back anthems’.

Ros tweeted earlier this year: ‘It’s frankly incomprehensible that I’m tweeting this – but here’s the line-up for Stonebridge at Glastonbury and, to my great excitement and astonishment, I’m on it.

THREAD 1/15: As I may have mentioned a couple of times, in an unlikely development, I’m going to be doing a drum and bass set @Glastonbury . And, not at all unreasonably, quite a few people have asked me variations on ‘how did that happen?!’ Well, there’s a bit of a story here. pic.twitter.com/Po5lLsPXaU — Ros Atkins (@BBCRosAtkins) June 17, 2024

‘What started with a one-off drum and bass set for BBC6Music two years ago has ended up here. Very grateful for the invitation. Work on the set has already begun.’

After being asked whether DJing a drum and bass set at Glastonbury was the ‘peak’ of his career, Ros replied: ‘In DJing terms, I think we can say that with some certainty!’

In his story about how he came to be ready to play Glastonbury during the last weekend of June, he referenced a story he told over 18 months ago to people who were curious about his musical past.

Ros Atkins in 2006 DJing

‘Now here’s a story. Back in the 90s, along with lots of teenagers in Cornwall, I started going to raves and listening to hardcore and drum and bass,’ he tweeted in 2022.

‘I also started to DJ… I started to buy a lot of D&B and, through my 20s, in a very amateur fashion, I DJed a range of music in London, Cornwall & Cambridge.’

He continued: ‘I also lived in South Africa for a while and, improbably, ended up playing in the D&B room at a huge rave in Johannesburg train station.’

That tweet thread even got a response from legendary TV chef Nigella Lawson, who complimented Ros on his story and said his history with music was ‘Fabulous’.

This year’s festival will be headlined by Coldplay, Dua Lipa and SZA while Shania Twain will be performing in the Legend’s Slot.
