Zufari: Ride into Africa is an off-road safari trail jeep ride. Located in the theme park within a 22-acre site landscaped to look like an African reserve. It is home to animals such as giraffes, southern white rhinos, ostriches, blesbok and more.

The ride trucks can hold 30 guests at one time, providing views of the animals from both sides. There are six trucks in total. Each truck features an audio system that allows the driver to trigger sound clips based on what the guests can see at that time and the core story.

The ride is themed around an African Conservation team called A.C.R.E (standing for ‘African Conservation Research and Exploration’) who have discovered a new area within Africa, which they have named ‘ZUFARI’.

The ride featured an extensive backstory opening video that has since been retired. The video covered the story of the discovery of the area and the family. T he preshow room has long since been empty of any such video. With the room now used as part of a photo opportunity. However, it doesn’t always have a host, so you may not be able to get those snaps!

The ride takes guests through the terrain of the Zufari reserve and shows the animals that it houses . W ith commentary from the Van-Driver family, a team of A.C.R.E researchers. Towards the end of the ride, a tree blocks the path f orcing the truck to take a separate route. Traversing through a “dangerous cave”, a water effects feature, including the vehicle driving through a waterfall. B eware, even though the trucks have a roof, you may still get a soaking!

African Safari VIP Experience

Our daughter wanted to see and feed animals up close for her 21st so we opted for the African Safari VIP experience. If we had to describe the experience in one word, that word would be Awesome! We met our guide at the VIP checkin desk at the Safari Hotel and were then taken behind the scenes to our 4x4 safari vehicle waiting to take us on our adventure. After a brief safety briefing on board we were on our way to the open paddocks. As soon as we started out there were Ankole Cattle, Zebra and Antelope chasing the 4x4 wanting their food! We were literally face to face with these magnificent animals and it was a 30 minute experience we'll remember forever.

We had a great day at chessington on Monday 6th August. We was here on what felt like the hottest day of the year but the queue times were relatively short. The kids always have a wonderful time at the park, The staff in the pizza buffet restaurant were fantastic i would like to thank Eliouise at the till who helped us go through the allergy board, and Georgina our sever who took us to our table they were both very helpful. The only negative would be the park is that there needs to be more shaded areas especially in queues during the hot weather. The tiger rock ride is good and the kids loved it great way to cool off.

My 7 yr old daughter and I often visit Chessington once or twice a year. She loves rides and being approx. 1.3m in height, she can pretty much ride everything as opposed to Thorpe Park where 1.4m is the minimum height on the larger rides. We visited in the summer holidays, it was incredibly hot but despite an average of 45 minutes waiting time on the larger rides, the park itself felt relatively quiet. Regardless, we purchased our tickets online and I paid an extra £60 per head for unlimited fast pass. Although expensive, this makes a huge difference. We rode the big rides more than once, never queued longer than 5 minutes and also kept us out the sun which would've been pretty unbearable. Chessington remains the ideal place for 3-10 year olds and the new Tiger attraction is pretty impressive. Will no doubt continue our annual visit at least up until my daughter is tall enough to tackle some of the more exciting rides at Thorpe Park and Alton Towers.

Great two days in chessington. The only thing is they need to check toilets alot more often as they are filthy, more toilets need to be built around the park and more bins provided.

Visited with Daughter and three grandchildren, unless you can find some sort of online deal etc, its £35 per adult, so well over £100 to start with, but then if you want to get away from the queues, you can pay extra up to £63 extra , per person for fastrack tickets, which in my view discriminates against the poorer family, ( or just dont speak english and push your way to the front, which two ladies insisted on doing), other than some new tigers wandering about a new enclosure, most of the rides have been here a long time and at £2.50 for a bottle of water, not cheap on a hot day, still the young ones liked it, except the queueing, usually about 45mins a ride, if you travel to get here can be a very long day (M25 and M40 tailbacks lol)

Brilliant day at Chessington with my husband and two children (4 and 6). Plenty of the rides are family friendly, sign-posted at the entrance with height restrictions, and all of the rides are pretty close together so not too much extra walking to do which is great with younger children. We went on a particularly hot day, so we did think maybe we were being crazy to do it, but there was quite a bit of shade in the queues and around the park in general. Although it was busy, we didn't have to queue for longer than about 10-15mins even if the times on my husbands app said longer - bonus! The Gruffalo River Ride and the Scorpion Express were the biggest hits with my two kids and they had the longest queues, but they could cope with 15mins no trouble. O2 had a priority tent up and as my husband and I are both customers we got a few freebies for the kids and a voucher for a free callipo or magnum each, saving us a good £6.40! We ate at the Vampire Burger Kitchen which was more expensive than McDonalds but not too bad and the food was good. We took large bottles of frozen water and some regular water bottles - a bit heavy to carry at the start, but kept us cool and hydrated all day. Plenty of toilets but water can get hot in the sinks. Only gave 4 Stars for two reasons. 1) On the website it's hard to navigate around to find a map of the resort. I ended up having to Google it. 2) When queuing up the stairs for Scorpion Express, on a hot day be careful of the handrail! It's half wooden half metal and my son burnt his arm. Coming down the stairs, the wooden half is raised above the metal part so you don't touch it. Overall, a lovely experience. It was clean, the staff were friendly and we felt safe as we were secured into the rides because the staff checked carefully.

Zufari: Ride into Africa!

Chessington World of Adventures has long combined elements of both a zoo and a theme park, helping it to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK. With its new attraction for the 2013 season, the park is attempting to blend animal exhibits with a traditional ride experience - but does Zufari: Ride into Africa! succeed?

Clearly inspired by the popular Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom, as well as Rhino Rally at Busch Gardens Tampa, Chessington World of Adventure's new addition is its most ambitious for some time. It takes guests on a safari-style tour around a number of animal enclosures, hosting exotic species such as white rhinos, giraffes and flamingos.

Zufari entrance

Zufari: Ride into Africa! occupies a sizeable chunk of space in the Wanyama Village & Reserve area of the park, which opened back in 2010. It represents a huge investment from Chessington, incorporating interactive animation, full-sized safari trucks and several all-new animal enclosures. We headed to the park to see if the heavy spending has paid off.

Preparing for the safari

Zufari: Ride into Africa! is accessible via a bridge located close Tomb Blaster and Rameses Revenge in the Forbidden Kingdom area. Unusually, guests are required to walk some distance to reach the Wanyama Village & Reserve's other main attraction, the savannah located in front of the Holiday Inn Chessington .

Zufari queue line

The ride's queue line is somewhat spartan, although the park has scattered a few props around to make it look as though preparations for a safari are underway. Midway through the line, guests are asked to pose for a photo in front of a green screen, which replaces the on-board photos common on many of the park's other rides.

Overall, the queue area for Zufari: Ride into Africa is fairly uninspiring. While a few information boards are scattered around, Chessington has missed the opportunity to really educate guests about the animals that they are about to see. This would have both built anticipation for the journey ahead, and compensated for the lack of time for commentary about the animals during the ride itself.

Joining A.C.R.E.

Zufari pre-show entrance

Upon reaching the front of the queue, guests wait outside one of three doors. When these eventually open, they are herded into an indoor pre-show area. There, they are introduced to the backstory of the ride by a member of the fictional A.C.R.E. (African Conservation, Research & Exploration), which manages research on the Zufari site.

Zufari pre-show

In what amounts to a low-rent version of attractions such as Disney's Turtle Talk with Crush , an animated lemur then interacts with guests. A staff member voices the character, using cameras located in the room to identify individuals and challenge them to perform feats such as impersonating a monkey.

The animation in the pre-show looks somewhat cheap, with the lemur's lip-synching being particularly problematic. While it will raise a few laughs among Chessington's younger visitors, it really does little to build excitement about the ride ahead other than briefly mentioning a "dangerous cave". The park scores points for effort for trying out the animation technology, but the pre-show feels like another missed opportunity to introduce the real stars of Zufari: the animals.

Zufari: Ride into Africa! features a minimum height restriction of 1.1 metres, with children under 1.3 metres required to be accompanied by a person aged 16 or over. This makes the choice of pre-show even stranger - the young kids that it would appeal to most are not even able to witness it.

Touring Zufari

Zufari route

Upon exiting the pre-show building, riders board one of Chessington's fleet of Zufari trucks, each of which can hold up to thirty guests in six rows of five.

Zufari truck

Naturally, you'll get slightly better views (and photo-taking opportunities) from the seats on either side of the truck, rather than in the middle. However, you don't lose out too much by sitting in the centre.

Flamingo enclosure

The start of the journey is a little uninspiring, with a prominent view of the Holiday Inn Chessington breaking any illusion that riders are really in Africa. The trucks pause for a while at a pool that holds a flock of bright pink flamingos (and, on our journey at least, a few visiting ducks). A short commentary introduces the birds, before the truck swiftly pulls away into the next section.

Zufari giraffes

This, for us, was where Zufari really began to live up to its potential. Rounding the bend into a small "savannah", we came face-to-face with three enormous giraffes, who were walking around in search of food. Lying next to them were to several scimitar-horned oryx, taking advantage of the relatively sunny spring weather. Zebras, meanwhile, were grazing on the grass. A collective gasp echoed around the interior of the truck, as guests hastily reached for their cameras.

Zufari rhinos

The next area was just as impressive, bringing riders up-close to three white rhinos - Kanty, Dozer and Gyasi. The enclosures for the various animals are either integrated or cleverly separated by concealed fences and water, making the journey between them seamless.

Unfortunately, the safari experience is over all-too-quickly, with little time for the guests to actually learn anything more than basic facts about the animals they are seeing. We certainly didn't feel short-changed, but we didn't feel fully satisfied by the ride's duration, either.

The grand finale

After leaving the rhino enclosure, guests are forced by a "fallen tree" to take a detour into the dangerous cave that was mentioned during the pre-show. Here, guests learn why their seats were wet when they boarded the truck. Water jets spray on them from either side, before the cave floods in an effect reminiscent of Catastrophe Canyon in the studio tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Walt Disney Studios, Paris (but on a smaller scale).

Zufari cave

As it exits the cave, the truck passes under a waterfall, threatening to drench everyone on board. Its roof, though, does a good job of deflecting the water, and most guests (even those seated at the edge) will receive only a mild sprinkling.

The cave section feels a little tacked-on to the end of Zufari: Ride into Africa!, but we have to admit that it is undeniably good fun. Given the choice, though, we'd swap it for more time with the animals.

Our thoughts

Zufari: Ride into Africa! is a solid addition to Chessington World of Adventure's line-up, and the park should be commended for taking on such an ambitious project. Taken together with the existing Wanyama Village & Reserve savannah, it means that the park has added a huge Africa-themed zone over the past three years. It's also great to see the zoo and theme park elements of the park being treated as one, rather than as two separate entities.

Guests expecting a Kilimanjaro Safaris-style experience will be disappointed. In reality, Chessington could never hope to compete with the Disney attraction, which spans an area as large as the entire Magic Kingdom theme park. Still, it has done a nice job of bringing a "taste" of that experience to the UK, even if we wish the ride were just a little longer.

Zufari giraffe

Perhaps the biggest drawback of the current Zufari: Ride into Africa! setup is the lack of information that is provided on the animals that are its stars. There's little time for this during the ride itself, and few guests are listening to the commentary anyway. But the interactive pre-show feels like a way to pad out the attraction's duration, rather than really adding anything to the experience. It would be nice to see it updated to provide more background on the various species seen by guests in future.

Another major issue with Zufari: Ride into Africa! is its 1.1 metre height limit. No such restriction exists on Disney's Kilimanjaro Safaris, and it's a real shame that smaller children who would love the ride are unable to experience it. Of course, there are laws regarding the use of booster seats in vehicles that apply in the UK, and capacity may be hit if they were to be used on Zufari. Still, we can't help hoping for some sort of compromise solution in future - we witnessed several disappointed kids being turned away at the attraction's entrance.

We visited on a quiet day, but were still forced to wait for at least 15 minutes between joining the (empty) queue and boarding the ride. Inevitably, this raises questions about capacity, although Chessington should be able to add more trucks on busy days. Still, the length of the queue line suggests that guests could be in for long waits during the peak season.

Zufari: Ride into Africa! doesn't quite qualify for "classic" status, and we'd still rate Flamingo Land's Lost River Ride as the best hybrid theme park ride / animal exhibit in the UK. But it is a great addition to Chessington's already strong roster of attractions, and an essential ride for every guest at the park to try at least once.

I think Zufari would have been a lot better without the preshow.

Sounds like Zufari tried to be a bit of everything and might've spread itself a little too thin in some areas. Still, a great addition to the park, I'd say!

African animal experiences and safari adventures...

One of the village's resident meerkats

Chessington's Wanyama Village & Reserve covers a large area to the north west of the rest of the theme park and encompasses Zufari and the Wanyama Village zoo exhibits, bordering on the Azteca and Safari hotels.

Wanyama is a Swahili word meaning big animals. Appropriately, Zufari is the main attraction in Wanyama, and takes visitors on a jeep safari adventure allowing them to get up close to animals including zebras and giraffes. Guests staying at the Safari Hotel can look out on the Reserve from their bedroom windows.

A pathway leads between Zufari and Wanyama Village, which is home to a number of smaller African animals such as meerkats and lemurs. There are several interactive activities for children to discover including a tunnel under the meerkat enclosure, plus a playground and climbing frame.

When Zufari: Ride into Africa first opened, the area was simply known as "Zufari". It became known as Wanyama Village and Reserve in 2019, when the existing Wanyama Village zoo exhibits were merged into the area.

I love animals, especially giraffes, so when I found out about a giraffe feeding experience at Chessington Zoo I jumped at the chance. The Surrey zoo is located within the ground of Chessington World of Adventures south of London.

I hadn't been to the theme park since I was of school age and I don't remember ever wandering around the zoo, so it was a weird yet exciting feeling returning to the family attraction. I went on a Saturday morning ready for my 10am session and felt like child again.

The theme park was bursting with vibrant colours, enthusiastic members of staff and there was an obvious buzz of eager youngsters rushing to find their favourite ride. Chessington Zoo offers a number of VIP animal experiences including a penguin encounter, Amur tiger encounter, capybara feed, skunk walk, gorilla sneak peek, carnivore zoo keeper and a sunset animal safari.

Prices range from £8 to £150 offering something to suit all budgets. The giraffe safari feeding experience I went on cost £50 per person and allows you to come face to face with the amazing African hoofed mammal.

Whichever experience you choose, you will need to meet at a cabin opposite the Rattlesnake ride where a tour guide or zoo keeper will meet you. The price does not include entry to the theme park, so you will have to purchase a ticket for that too (£36 per person in advance).

Laura Nightingale went on a giraffe safari

My tour guide stood out like a sore thumb for he was more animated than any of the kids running past my feet. He swiftly guided me through the zoo where the meerkats and pygmy goats lived until we reached the entrance to the giraffe stable.

I climbed onto a truck (it may not be suitable for some non-ambulant adventurers) and belted up. Our guide was passionate about the zoo residents and delivered his tour with enthusiasm and energy, plus I learnt lots about the Rothschild species too.

When booking your ticket, there is a minimum of two people per booking, and if other people outside your party book the same slot, you may have to share the truck with others. Visitors aged between five and 12 will also need to be accompanied by a paying adult.

I was given a bucket of leaves to hand feed the six gentle giants from my seat, and it was the most magical experience. The tour lasted around 30 minutes and I loved every single minute of it, in fact with the autumn sun shining on my face, it felt like I was on an African safari.

While you are asked not to stroke the animals, they are allowed to lick you when feeding them (that's if if you're not too afraid of their long black tongues). My morning with these stunning creatures was superb, and as I watched fellow theme park-goers in the distance, I really did feel like a VIP.

Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
