Why Trust Byrdie

Byrdie / Jessica Juliao

Our best overall pick is the  Dr. Dennis Gross Universal Daily Peel  that contains a blend of AHAs and salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin while improving its tone and texture. It’s a dermatologist-favorite as well as a beloved product by many of our editors. For a more affordable pick, consider  La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Duo , which contains a concentration of benzoyl peroxide and lipo-hydroxy acid to regulate sebum production without drying skin.

We can pick, squeeze, and extract without abandon, but days later, blackheads are back, taunting us in the bathroom mirror. When professional extractions aren’t possible, the best way to remove blackheads is to treat them with a topical formula that can decongest and unclog skin with powerful  chemical exfoliants . Blackheads are a form of acne that occurs when the pore becomes clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. Further, blackheads occur when the pore is open at the surface level, which causes the contents to become oxidized and darker in color—hence, the name blackhead.

Experts emphasize that picking or squeezing blackheads causes more harm than good, potentially exacerbating acne scarring. Instead, dermatologists recommend using chemical exfoliants to unclog the pore without squeezing gunk out of your face. We combined hours of research, dermatologist recommendations, and our editors’ tried-and-true picks to compile this list of the best blackhead treatments. Our team evaluated dozens of products based on their ingredient lists, formulation, potential for irritation, and value. From quick-fix clay masks to powerful actives that will change your complexion over time, these picks are the best in show.

Best Overall

Dr. dennis gross alpha beta universal daily peel.

Contains both AHAs and BHAs to dissolve sebum and prevent oil from building up inside pores

Lactic acid gently resurfaces pores

Includes deactivator pad to prevent over-exfoliation and irritation

Could be too strong for sensitive skin

Benefits: Clears congestion, fights dullness, smoothes | Skin Type: Combination, oily, dry | Size: 30 treatments | Cruelty-Free: Yes

These incredibly popular peel pads are soaked in a dual AHA and BHA exfoliating solution to dissolve dead surface cells and improve the look of skin tone, clarity, and texture. Also included is salicylic acid , which can dissolve oil within a pore, lessening the severity of acne and blackheads. Dermatologist and founder Dr. Dennis Gross told Byrdie that these peel pads are an “effective and easy treatment to target congestion and uneven skin tone without sensitizing the skin, thanks to the unique two-step peel process.”

With thousands of positive reviews on Sephora, the Alpha Beta Universal Daily is a pretty safe bet for improving blackheads. Associate editorial director Shannon Bauer also adores it, saying “These exfoliating acid pads are gentle enough for daily use but I get great results using them just a few times per week. The two-step system leaves no stinging feeling or redness yet smooths texture and clears pores. I reach for these when I want a ’your skin looks amazing’ day because the two-minute treatments make my skin so glowy and radiant.”

Best Budget

The ordinary lactic acid 10% + ha.

Lactic acid dissolves oil and unclogs pores

Tasmanian pepperberry and hyaluronic acid reduce inflammation

Can cause some stinging on sensitive skin

Benefits: Evens skin tone, clears congestion | Skin Type: Dry, combo, oily | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

“Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% is an exfoliating formula for those who are experienced users of direct acids,” says Prudvi Mohan Kaka , the chief scientific officer at Deciem. “ Lactic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid, which are comedolytic and keratolytic in nature. This means that they function to promote exfoliation by loosening the topmost layer of dead skin, helping to even out skin tone and reducing textural irregularities,” he adds.

There’s also the added benefit of hyaluronic acid , a humectant that increases skin moisture, resulting in a plumper, more supple complexion. We appreciate that the texture is lightweight and it effectively exfoliates the skin, though beware that it can sting a bit when first applied, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Best Drugstore

La roche-posay effaclar duo.

Contains benzoyl peroxide and lipo-hydroxy acid to regulate sebum production

Fragrance-free

Suitable for sensitive skin

Can be drying

Benefits: Reduces breakouts, evens skin tone, refines pores | Skin Type: All | Size: 0.6 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

This French pharmacy pick is recommended by dermatologist Dr. Jo-Ann See, MD due to its simple but proven formulation. “ Benzoyl peroxide is very helpful when it comes to regulating sebum flow and clearing the pores long term, especially paired with an exfoliating acid,” she says. “You can use this lotion all over the face, but I prefer it as a targeted treatment in congested areas.” In addition to how accessible and effective it is, we also appreciate that it’s suitable for all skin types, even sensitive ones.

Best Brightening

Glossier solution.

Niacinamide helps fade discoloration

AHAs, BHAs dissolve oil and exfoliate skin

Glycerin and aloe vera soothe and calm skin

Contains fragrance

Benefits: Fades discoloration, smooths, clears congestion | Skin Type: Combination, oily | Size: 4.4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This hard-working liquid exfoliator from Glossier contains a cocktail of exfoliating acids, plus niacinamide , glycerin , and aloe vera to help fade discoloration, soothe, and calm the skin. Dermatologist Shyamalar Gunatheesan, MD tells us that this solution is a great alternative to physical scrubs, but the 10 percent concentration of three acid groups "might be a bit too intense to use regularly," so be sure to start slow and build up use. We appreciate that it includes glycolic acid which helps to improve the appearance of dark spots and help to create an overall brighter complexion. If you're looking for a mess-free product to swipe on quickly and easily layer in your skincare routine, this one is a great place to start.

Byrdie / Jenna Igneri

Best Acne Treatment

Differin adapalene gel 0.1%.

Adapalene proven to work to dissolve oil and reduce pore size

Layers well with other skincare

Might be too harsh for sensitive skin

Benefits: Evens skin tone, reduces acne and blackheads | Skin Type: Combination, oily | Size: 0.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Gunatheesan tells Byrdie that this treatment from Differin contains adapalene, a “type of retinoid that comes in 0.1% or 0.3% concentration and works to improve skin clarity, luminosity, and reduce pores.” She further explains that adapalene has a more stable chemical structure than other retinoids (like tretinoin ) and does not degrade when used alongside other acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide. So if you’re dealing with serious acne, you can use it in conjunction with other active ingredients to reduce breakouts and refine your pores. We also appreciate this formula on its own can help to improve various forms of acne, like whiteheads and raised blemishes, in addition to blackheads.

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

Contains physical, enzymatic, and chemical exfoliants

Smells great

Leaves skin looking bright

Can be a bit harsh if you scrub too hard

Benefits: Smooths and refines | Skin Type: Dry, oily, combo, balanced | Size: 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

Reminiscent of the scent of real pumpkin pie, this popular and deliciously-smelling face mask utilizes the power of pumpkin enzymes (as well as physical exfoliants and AHAs) to remove dead cells and smooth the skin’s surface. This triple exfoliating threat buffs away dry patches and helps to improve the tone and texture of the skin, and we appreciate that just a little bit of the formula goes a long way.

“I’ve been using this mask for at least five years, and it’s one of the very few products that I refuse to be without in my skincare rotation,” says commerce writer Alyssa Kaplan . “I've dealt with enlarged pores on my nose for as long as I can remember, but when I’m diligent about using this mask weekly, they appear less noticeable. I also find that using it consistently helps me to maintain incredibly smooth, soft skin.”

Best Liquid Exfoliator

Paula's choice skin perfecting 2% bha liquid exfoliant.

Easy to layer in skincare routine

Contains a blend of salicylic acid and BHAs

Lightweight

Can have a bit of a funny smell

Benefits: Clarifies, reduces breakouts and blackheads | Skin Type: Combination, oily, dry, balanced | Size: 1, 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

You’d be hard-pressed to find a liquid exfoliant with more of a fan club than Paula’s Choice 2% BHA. With promises to sweep away dead skin cells, unclog pores, and visibly smooth wrinkles, the minimalist formula is simple and highly effective. See says that the concentration of salicylic acid is “just right,” and the fact that it doesn't have many other potential irritants means it’s an excellent choice for sensitive or reactive skin.

“I gravitate towards products that are easy to layer in my skincare routine, and this is one of my favorites,” says Kaplan. “I apply the thin, fluid formula to my skin directly after cleansing and before moisturizing, and it applies beautifully. I’ve noticed that when I use it daily, it helps to control my excess oil product and keep my complexion looking radiant.”

Best Clay Mask

Fresh umbrian clay facial mask.

Mineral-rich Umbrian clay reduces shine and absorbs oil

Cinnamon bark has clarifying properties

Effects may not be long-term

Benefits: Refines, reduces appearance of pore size | Skin Type: Combination, oily | Size: 3.3 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

This Umbrian clay mask promises to minimize pores and shine without stripping or dulling the skin. However, Gunatheesan says that it’s best to view this one as a quick fix rather than a long-term skin solution. Why? Because the ingredient profile isn’t really able to permanently clear out the pores. “This is more of a temporary indulgence, and I don’t particularly see a don’t see a long-term benefit,” she explains. “The initial sebum removal might result in rebound sebum overproduction, so just be sure to follow up with lightweight moisture.” If you’re looking for a product to help reduce the appearance of your pores prior to a special event, this is a great option for that.

Best Cleanser

Murad acne control clarifying cleanser.

Contains salicylic acid

Formulated with green tea extract

Feels cooling on the skin

Can be a bit drying

Benefits: Cleanses, refines, reduces shine | Skin Type: All | Size: 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

Cleansing your skin of excess oil and debris is essential in order to maintain a clear complexion. This powerful cleanser is formulated with 1.5% salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and treat breakouts, as well as green tea extract to soothe inflamed skin. Though it’s suitable for all skin types, it can be slightly drying, so we think it’s ideal for those who are prone to excess oil.

“I’ve been using this cleanser for years both on my face and chest to treat and prevent breakouts, and I’ve found it to be extremely effective,” says Kaplan. “It feels nice and cooling on the skin, and it helps to control my greasy T-zone and keep my pores looking minimal.”

Best Cleanser, Runner-Up

Bioderma sensibio foaming gel.

Gentle, micelle technology removes dirt and makeup without clogging pores

Free of many potential irritants

Not ideal for oily skin

Benefits: Cleanses without stripping | Skin Type: Dry, combination | Size: 16.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If you’re looking for a cleanser that’s going to tackle congestion but perhaps doesn’t contain potent active ingredients, like exfoliating acids, See also loves this simple option from Bioderma. “It’s best to avoid moisturizing cleansers that have high levels of paraffin, mineral oil , or fragrant ’natural’ oils because they can block pores, which can lead to acne,” she says. “This product is suitable for congested skin, plus it’s quite conditioning.” Also nice: It uses micelle technology, so it removes makeup, dirt, and oil efficiently. We also appreciate that it’s free from synthetic fragrances.

Byrdie / Kate Remaly

Best for Sensitive Skin

Rationale #5 the milk concentrate.

Safe for sensitive skin

Conditioning formula

Contains bacteria-fighting piroctone olamine to prevent acne from congested pores

Small bottle

Benefits: Resurfaces, prevents acne-causing bacteria | Skin Type: Dry, sensitive | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If your skin is sensitive, Gunatheesan recommends this conditioning milk concentrate to exfoliate and resurface sans irritation. “This is perfect for sensitive skin that cannot handle any acids,” she says. “It contains piroctone olamine, which prevents replication of bacteria on the skin’s surface to combat acne, blackheads, and congestion.”

Piroctone olamine is a compound often used in cosmetic products as an antifungal treatment and has been found to help balance the skin microbiome and reduce the incidence of acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Consider this an excellent alternative if you can’t tolerate super potent exfoliants.

Best for Blemish-Prone Skin

Rose ingleton md blemish control booster serum.

Contains green tea, turmeric, and neem extract to calm inflammation

Formulated with AHAs help dissolve oil inside pores

Lightweight texture

Small amount

Benefits: Clarifies, reduces breakouts and blackheads, fades discoloration | Skin Type: Combination, oily | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This dermatologist-developed formula contains ingredients that help to prevent new blemishes, like a concentration of AHAs (also great for dissolving excess oil), in addition to antioxidants that help fade discoloration from old spots. It also contains niacinamide to target inflammation and soothe skin. Botanical extracts like green tea, turmeric , and neem extract also bring down inflammation and help soothe redness associated with active blemishes. If you’re looking to target blackheads as well as other types of blemishes, we recommend giving this serum a go.

What to Look for When Buying Blackhead Treatments

  • Chemical exfoliants: Acids help dissolve dead skin cells and excess oil, both of which are components of the “gunk” that can end up clogging pores. Once that gunk oxidizes, you end up with a blackhead. Beta-hydroxy acids, like salicylic acid, are great for breaking down oil, while alpha-hydroxy acids (like glycolic and lactic acids) have the added benefit of evening out skin tone and texture.
  • Physical exfoliants: You can also opt for physical exfoliants that scrub away dead cells and other pore-clogging debris. These ingredients, like clay, work like magnets, drawing out impurities that can get lodged deep in pores.
  • Retinoids: For those who want to steer clear of acids, retinoids speed up the rate at which skin cells turn over, which helps to push out blackheads. However, they can cause redness and irritation, so you may want to avoid them if you have sensitive skin or sandwich retinoid products between layers of moisturizer to help reduce the effects.

While those iconic pore strips of your youth can be admittedly satisfying to use, their mechanism of action—that sticking and then yanking—may pull out a few blackheads, but it also poses a risk of skin damage, which can ultimately end up making your pores appear bigger. Instead, dermatologists agree that using chemical exfoliants such as retinoids or beta-hydroxy acids is the safest and most effective way to go.

This largely depends on the product you’re using. Typically, exfoliating cleansers can be used once or even twice daily, while leave-on serums, masks, and peels can be used a few times per week.

For leave-on serums, masks, and peels, you’ll always want to apply these on clean skin, so prep by washing with a mild and gentle cleanser. Also, while it can be tempting to try and squeeze or push out blackheads, resist the urge, or else you could end up exacerbating the situation.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

Including the best blackhead removal treatments.

how to get rid of blackheads, blackhead removal

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

While all pimples are no fun, blackheads can be some of the most annoying to deal with: They are abundant, hard to hide and just keep coming back. "Blackheads, which are medically known as open comedones, are pores filled with oil or sebum, debris, and dead skin cells ," explains Robyn Gmyrek, M.D. , a dermatologist at Park View Laser Dermatology in New York City. The oily mixture sits at the surface opening of the pore , where it gets oxidized by air and turns a black or gray color.

Blackheads and whiteheads are typically the earliest signs of acne , explains Ife Rodney, M.D. , a dermatologist and founding director of Eternal Dermatology in Fulton, MD. The main difference between them is that blackheads appear dark due to the pores being open, while "whiteheads are closed comedones, meaning that the surface of the plugged follicle is covered by a thin layer of skin, creating a lighter color."

But before you get your fingers in position to squeeze those blackheads (yes, it is okay; see below for the safest way!), Good Housekeeping editors interviewed top dermatologists about blackhead causes and how to get rid of even the deepest blackheads on the nose, cheeks, back and more:

First, what causes blackheads?

According to Dr. Gymrek, blackheads have many underlying causes. "They are most commonly seen during puberty, when hormones lead to the increased production of sebum or oil, and the pore gets clogged," she explains. " Hormones may also fluctuate and cause blackheads during monthly menstruation , pregnancy and in those with polycystic ovarian syndrome or other hormonal syndromes where there is an excess of androgens."

preview for 13 Surprising Things Causing Your Breakouts

Other factors may include taking steroids, wearing tight clothing and hats or helmets when sweating (think athletes), and from using thick and occlusive creams or oil-based products that can clog pores. Genetics also play a role, says David Bank, M.D. , founder and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, NY. "Pore size is determined by genetics and those with larger pores are more prone to having blackheads."

What are the best treatments for blackheads?

There are many ways to treat and prevent blackheads, but generally speaking, you want to "consistently use medicated cleansers or treatment products that help break up the debris within your pores, regardless of whether the blackheads are on your cheeks or back," Dr. Rodney says. Here are the best blackhead treatment ingredients and formulas to look for:

1. Use a daily cleanser with salicylic acid

La roche-posay effaclar medicated gel acne face wash.

Effaclar Medicated Gel Acne Face Wash

First, seek out active ingredients like salicylic acid , a beta-hydroxy acid that is ideal for removing blackheads. "Because it's oil soluble, it is able to deeply penetrate the pores and oil glands to break up the debris and sebum ," Dr. Rodney explains. She recommends using it in a daily cleanser , like La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser .

2. Or try a face wash with benzoyl peroxide

Cerave acne foaming cream face cleanser.

Acne Foaming Cream Face Cleanser

Another effective and slightly more powerful option for blackheads is benzoyl peroxide, also popular in cleansers like CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser . It helps dissolve the dead skin cells above the top of the pimple, helping to open it up. Dr. Gmyrek warns not be overzealous and use more than is recommended on the product packaging instructions, as doing so can dry out and irritate skin .

3. Apply powerful retinoids for deep pore cleansing

Differin adapalene gel 0.1% acne treatment.

Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment

If all else fails, retinoids and retinol (a milder version), both vitamin A derivatives, can also be extremely effective in treating blackheads. " Retinoids change the way your skin cells develop from the inside out, to prevent the clogging of pores and acne formation ," Dr. Rodney explains. Retinoids are available both in over-the-counter and prescription strength. (Bonus: They also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles ). Both Dr. Gmyrek and Dr. Bank recommend using an adapalene 0.1 percent gel, like Differin .

4. Use steam for careful extractions

Start by steaming your face to open up your pores, Dr. Bank suggests. "Then, use two cotton swabs or a comedone extractor to gently press on the sides of the blackhead," he continues. "Do not use your hands, as this can introduce bacteria and lead to infection."

5. Try a two-step approach to nix blackheads overnight

Proactiv proactiv blackhead dissolving gel.

Proactiv Blackhead Dissolving Gel

To help blackheads disappear by morning, Dr. Bank recommends a two step process: Use a pore strip first and follow by applying a salicylic acid gel before bed.

If you have blackheads on your cheeks, be gentle. "Remember that this skin will be a bit drier and perhaps more sensitive to salicylic acid, retinoids or benzoyl peroxide than other spots," Dr. Gmyrek says. You can use these ingredients, but in smaller quantities so the skin doesn't dry out or get irritated.

6. Use pore strips to remove stubborn blackheads from your nose

Bioré original deep cleansing pore strips.

Original Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

Try pore strips, like the gold standard Bioré Original Deep Cleansing Pore Strips . These mask -like patches adhere to the nose skin, and as they dry, the adhesive attaches to oil, sebum, and dead skin cells , which are removed when the strip is taken off, Dr. Gmyrek says. They can be irritating, though, so proceed with caution if you have sensitive skin or rosacea. If you're prone to blackheads on the nose, Dr. Bank also suggests regularly using a cleanser or serum with salicylic acid on this area and getting a professional facial with manual extractions.

What about removing blackheads on the back and body?

Vive lotion applicator for your back.

Lotion Applicator for Your Back

For blackheads on the back skin, "I recommend using a benzoyl peroxide face or body wash in the shower daily," Dr. Gymrek says. " Let it sit on the skin for a minute or two before washing off. " She suggests trying a formula that contains 5% benzoyl peroxide to start, then moving to a higher percentage if your skin can tolerate it without irritation. If benzoyl peroxide is too drying, apply a salicylic acid wash instead, Dr. Gymrek suggests.

Another option: Before bed, spread a thin coat of a retinoid gel or cream on the area, starting with every other night to prevent irritation. (If you can’t reach your back, get someone to help you apply the cream or try a back lotion applicator .) For more stubborn blackheads, visit a dermatologist: Dr. Bank suggests a Jessner peel , which contains a mix of alpha and beta hydroxy acids to deeply exfoliate skin and treat acne.

What blackhead removal treatments should I avoid?

If a blackhead is large in size or resisting removal, don't try to DIY. "For those super deep blackheads, you should see a dermatologist or esthetician, as they have special tools that can safely extract the gunk trapped in your pores," Dr. Rodney explains. "Do not attempt to remove these yourself, as this can cause trauma and scarring of your skin ."

DIY blackhead removal hacks are dicey in general. A PSA from our dermatologist pros: Though much talked-about on the internet, toothpaste is not an effective blackhead treatment — it's too harsh and drying on skin .

How can I prevent blackheads?

While you can't get rid of blackheads permanently (sorry!), you can maintain a consistent skincare routine incorporating the tips above to prevent future ones from popping up. Some more must-dos:

  • Always remove your makeup at night.
  • Wash your face twice daily.
  • Make sure to address any underlying hormonal issues if possible.
  • Eliminate any thick, occlusive creams, makeup or hair products if you think they may be an underlying cause.

Blackheads , much like cockroaches, are the worst for this very reason: Every time you squeeze one of them away, it seems you find dozens more to tackle. (How's that for a fun visual?) As satisfying as that squeeze may be in the moment, the peskiness of blackheads can wear on anyone. They just keep. Coming. Back.

They're a type of acne which, as a friendly reminder, affects up to  50 million Americans annually . In search of answers, we turned to top dermatologists to find out how to get rid of blackheads safely and efficiently, with options ranging from over-the-counter products and prescription medication to in-office intervention.

What exactly are blackheads?

Is it ok to squeeze blackheads, will blackheads go away on their own, how do you treat blackheads, what softens blackheads for removal.

  • How do you draw out a deep blackhead?

Before you try to get rid of blackheads, it's important you understand what they are, starting with their technical name, the “open comedone.” (There are two types of comedones: open and closed, the latter of which you likely refer to a whitehead). Blackheads look like itty-bitty dark bumps on the surface of the skin. “They appear when sebum gets trapped with dead skin at the surface of your pores,” says  Jessie Cheung , MD, a Chicago-based board-certified dermatologist and founder of Cheung Aesthetics & Wellness. It's the oil's exposure to air that causes them to oxidize and turn black, she adds.

Some people wrongfully assume that black speck is dirt, but as evidenced above, that's not the case. "Having [blackheads] isn't a sign that you're dirty," says  Rachel Nazarian , MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. But if you frequently get them, it's worth trying to pinpoint why.

Why do you get so many blackheads?

Carmen Castilla , MD, a New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist, warns there are several reasons you can't escape blackheads. Where it gets complicated, per the pro, is that it's "all the same pathogenesis." In simpler terms, the triggers leading to blackhead formation in one person may also be responsible for acne vulgaris and whiteheads in another.

That being said, one of the primary culprits for blackheads is excessive oil production, which can be influenced by genetic and hormonal factors. Dr. Cheung further clarifies that individuals with naturally oily skin are more prone to visible blackheads due to their skin type and larger pores.

Other causes that might surprise you? Using occlusive skin-care products, Dr. Castilla continues.  Occlusive products create an airtight protective barrier on the skin to keep in moisture but can cause clogged pores on oily skin types.

If you take away anything from this article, please let it be that you shouldn’t — under any circumstances — squeeze your blackheads. Dr. Cheung warns that doing so may “push the blackhead deeper or even cause scarring that can lead to larger pores.” Even worse is the possibility of infection, because you’d potentially add bacteria into the area with your hands, warns Dr. Castilla.

Yes and no. “If the blackhead is small and near the surface of the skin, it can potentially resolve on its own,” says Dr. Castilla. On the other hand, deep blackheads don't and often require professional extraction, she says. While she admits that it can be difficult to tell how deep a blackhead is, she explains that, “typically, the larger the black dot is on the surface, the deeper the blackhead is.”

If you're a dedicated fan of professional facials, you might think the only way to banish pesky blackheads is through manual extraction. However, Dr. Cheung dispels this common misconception and presents a compelling alternative: chemical keratolytics. Among them are salicylic acid, retinol, glycolic acid, and more. The pro deems these exfoliating substances the preferred methods to tackle blackheads at home because they target and break down clusters of skin cells responsible for blackheads sans tweezers or invasive tools.

When it comes to getting rid of blackheads or any acne for that matter, there are two things you can do: You can use expert-recommended skin-care products at home and see if they help, but visiting a dermatologist may be the most helpful for a personalized course of action based.

Each Zodiac Sign's Unique Personality Traits

The best blackhead treatments for you will ultimately depend on your unique skin type, but if you're looking for an overarching guide, here are some of the best over-the-counter and prescription treatments to look out for, per top dermatologists.

“If you have blackheads, your go-to ingredient should be  salicylic acid ,” a type of  beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), says Joshua Zeichner , MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. "This beta hydroxy acid helps remove excess oil and exfoliate the cells from the surface of the skin."

The best way to utilize salicylic acid is to try a gentle face scrub, which acts as a one-two punch for combatting blackheads, providing double the exfoliation powers. "The combination of physical exfoliation from the scrub and chemical exfoliation from the salicylic acid can help keep the pores clear," Dr. Zeichner says.

A couple of our favorite salicylic acid scrubs include the  St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Scrub and  Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant .

However, you shouldn't exfoliate with a scrub every day. The general rule of thumb is three times per week for oily or combination skin and just once weekly for sensitive skin, says  Shari Marchbein , MD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University. On the days you don't use a scrub, swap in a gentle salicylic-acid cleanser, like  Current State's Salicylic Acid + Green Tea Exfoliating Cleanser , which contains 2% of the ingredient, or  Murad's Acne Control Clarifying Cleanser , formulated with 1.5% salicylic acid.

Dr. Castilla advocates against placing all trust in spot treatments when dealing with blackheads. She emphasizes consistent preventive treatments to ward off their formation from the start. This is important because even though blackheads don't look inflamed on the skin's surface, they cause inflammation beneath the skin, explains Dr. Castilla. And "just like inflammatory pimples, blackheads can also lead to scarring," which is why prevention is of the utmost importance.

However, if, despite your best preventative efforts, these stubborn blemishes manage to make an appearance, Dr. Castilla and Dr. Cheung concur that salicylic acid is the game-changing ingredient we need. According to Dr. Cheung, salicylic acid has the ability to "break up the clump of skin cells" and possesses a lipophilic nature, which enables it to target the oil within sebum specifically. This dual action makes salicylic acid great for treating existing blackheads and preventing future buildup.

Peace Out Acne Healing Dots are ideal for those who love the easy application of a patch, while the Murad Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment is a longtime Allure favorite and 2018 Best of Beauty Award winner.

"Retinoids can help treat blackheads and clogged pores by reducing the stickiness of the cells that clog pores, as well as speeding up the rate at which the skin turns over and regenerates," Dr. Marchbein says. While there are many  retinol myths , the underlying truth about the ingredient is that the right percentage and regimen can transform your skin — including helping to keep blackheads at bay.

If you have sensitive skin, consider an  over-the-counter retinoid cream , such as the  E.l.f. Skin Youth Boosting Advanced Night Retinoid Serum or the  SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5% Refining Night Cream .

For peskier cases of blackheads,  prescription retinoid creams such as "tretinoin, Retin A micro, or Tazorac can be effective," says Marchbein. NYC-based dermatologist  Sejal Shah , MD, aggress, saying that "topical retinoids are my first-line recommendation" for clearing up blackheads.

When all else fails, your dermatologist might prescribe oral medication. "If topical medications aren't doing the job, medications like birth control pills and  spironolactone decrease oil production and can effectively treat blackheads," says Dr. Zeichner. “They will get rid of blackheads and prevent new ones from showing up in the future.” Just keep in mind that these medications are reserved for people with more than just the occasional blackhead; they are more for people with moderate to severe acne.

We've said it before and will gladly repeat it: Moisturizing is a crucial step in any skin-care routine — even if you've got acne-prone skin. That's because "all of these methods may strip oils from the skin and be drying," says  Jeremy S. Fenton , MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Long Beach, New York. "It's important to maintain the right balance in the skin, and moisturizing will allow you to continue using exfoliating products without any issues."

A pro tip that's especially helpful for sensitive skin: If a retinoid cream is too drying, try applying it over moisturizer (or even between layers of moisturizer). We love the  Allure Readers' Choice Award winner,  Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra Dry Skin and the  Shani Darden Weightless Oil-Free Moisturizer .

8-TREK DRAWING OINTMENT – BUY 8-TREK DRAWING OINTMENT ONLINE:

Each 50ml tube of 8-Trek ointment is packed with powerful ingredients that work together to soothe and heal your skin.

To treat grazes or cuts, only a small amount of 8-Trek ointment will be needed but when treating ingrown hairs, thorns or splinters, a more generous dab of 8-Trek ointment should be applied to the wound and then covered. 8-Trek ointment will help draw out any impurities by softening the skin around the infected area and the dressing should not be changed for the first 24 hours. Thereafter, it can be changed twice daily.

If not treated promptly, boils can be painful and spread infection which can cause complications. Also, if left untreated, boils can recur and the infection will spread. To treat a boil, apply a generous amount of 8-Trek ointment and cover it with an absorbent dressing for protection. 8-Trek will help soften the affected area and draw out any pus and impurities. It is important to note that should a boil not respond to home treatment fairly quickly, a medical practitioner should be seen. Boils should never be “popped” as this may spread the infection to surrounding areas.

8-TREK DRAWING OINTMENT CONTAINS PER 100G:

  • Bituminol (3g)
  • Methyl Salicylate (3g)

HOW TO USE 8-TREK DRAWING OINTMENT:

  • When treating any wound large or small, it is important to wash hands well and clean the wound with a mild antiseptic. Then the wound should also be dried thoroughly before applying 8-Trek ointment and a dressing.
  • Apply to the affected area and cover with an occlusive dressing, gauze, or plaster 3 to 4 times a day.
  • When treating ingrown hairs, thorns or splinters, a more generous dab of 8-Trek ointment should be applied to the wound and then covered.
  • 8-Trek ointment will help draw out any impurities by softening the skin around the infected area and the dressing should not be changed for the first 24 hours. Thereafter, it can be changed twice daily.
  • To treat a boil, apply a generous amount of 8-Trek ointment and cover it with an absorbent dressing for protection.
  • As it is safe to use on children, 8-Trek ointment can be kept in sports bags, travel bags and school bags in addition to medicine cabinets.

Most people suffer from frequent minor skin problems like cuts or grazes and medicine chests usually contain countless different remedies to deal with them all. 8-Trek ointment is an all-purpose ointment that can replace many of these as it helps to treat grazes, insect bites, eczema, splinters, thorns, ingrown nails/hairs and even boils.

To treat grazes or cuts, a small amount of 8-Trek ointment is applied gently over the affected area.   This should be repeated frequently or until the wound starts to heal.  When treating ingrown hairs, thorns or splinters a more generous dab of 8-Trek ointment should be applied and the wound covered.     8-Trek ointment helps to draw out any impurities by softening the skin around the infected area.  The dressing should be left on for 24 hours before changing it for the first time, and then once the impurities are drawn out and the wound starts to heal, it can be left open to finish healing.

When treating any wound, it is important to wash hands thoroughly and clean the wound with a mild antiseptic. The wound area should also be dried thoroughly before applying 8-Trek ointment and a dressing.

Being economical and safe to use on children, 8-Trek ointment can be kept in sports bags, travel bags and school bags as well as medicine chests.
