This Safari extension replaces YouTube’s video player with one that supports PiP and more [U]

Avatar for Chance Miller

It’s no secret that using YouTube in the browser on your iPhone or iPad is a rather unpleasant experience. And in many ways, YouTube’s “native” app isn’t much better. This is where a new Safari extension called “Vinegar” comes in to save the day.

Update December 4, 2021 : Vinegar has received a nice update today with a host of new features:

  • On videos (and devices) that support 4K, you should see 4K video options in the quality switcher toolbar.
  • For people with expensive data plans, you can also switch to 144p and 240p.
  • You can toggle Theater mode with the keyboard shortcut “T” or click the “Theater” text below the video.
  • Supports keyboard shortcuts like “J” to rewind, “K” to pause, and “L” to forward.
  • Videos should be playable if you’re signed in with YouTube Premium.
  • Videos should be added to your watching history if you’re signed in.
  • Fixed a bunch of 3rd-party website embeds.
  • Sound no longer plays when you go back to the homepage.
  • It should preserve timestamp when you switch video quality.
  • Timestamped URLs (i.e. URLs with &t=123) should now work.
  • Clicking the chapter links in the description should bring you to the correct time.
  • You can now select quality for live videos as well.
  • Privacy-wise, it’s “safer” because now it only has access to web content on youtube.com.

“Vinegar” is a Safari extension for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that was released earlier this month with the goal of replacing the YouTube player with a minimal HTML player (via Daring Fireball ). This is similar to the days of YouTube5, which was a similar Safari extension back in the days when the YouTube player was written in Adobe Flash.

Developed by Zhenyi Tan, Vinegar replaces the YouTube player in Safari with a native HTML video tag, bringing a host of associated improvements:

  • The removal of in-video ads.
  • Prevent YouTube from tracking your play/pause/seek activities.
  • Restore picture-in-picture functionality.
  • The videos don’t stop playing if you switch to another browser tab.
  • You can choose the audio-only stream to keep the music playing when Safari is in the background.

The app works just as you would expect it to, and it makes the experience of using YouTube in your browser significantly more enjoyable. It works both directly on YouTube’s website and on videos embedded on third-party websites.

You can download Vinegar from the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It’s a one-time universal purchase of $1.99.

  • How to enable picture-in-picture for YouTube on your Mac

Using Safari, it’s easy to watch a video while doing other things

Picture in Picture (PIP)

If you like to work with a music video playing in the background or watch your favorite sports team while perusing social media or maybe if you simply like doing two things at once, picture-in-picture (PiP) can be really useful. It lets you pin a small window showing a video within a larger window on your computer or TV screen.

If you’re using a Mac, you can easily set up PiP for a YouTube video using either Apple’s Safari or Google’s Chrome browsers as well.

This first time, on how to have PiP on Safari, is courtesy of a great tweet by Ricky Mondello .

PiP using Safari

  • Right click twice on the YouTube Video. The first click will get you a menu that lets you copy the URL of the video, embed the code, or do other YouTube-related tasks. The second click will get you a more traditional menu.

youtube safari extension

  • Click on “Enter Picture in Picture.” Your video will shrink down to a much smaller size.
  • Open a new tab on your browser (or several, if you want) and go to another site — or you can leave the browser entirely. The video will keep playing.

youtube safari extension

  • To control the video, hover your cursor over the video. You can pause and restart it, take it out of PiP mode, or close the window entirely.
  • To move the small video window around, you can press down with one finger on your touchpad and use the other finger to move the window around your screen. If you’re using a mouse, then use the Command key.

There are a couple of other ways you can start PiP.

  • While your video is playing, right click on the volume icon in the tab; the menu will include the “Enter Picture in Picture” command. (Note: You won’t see the volume icon if you pause the video.)
  • If you have a Touch Bar, use the PiP icon (it looks like a small filled-in rectangle over a larger clear rectangle).

PiP using Chrome

After this article was published, a reader wrote me and asked why I hadn’t also included the way to do PiP using Google’s Chrome browser on a Mac. So I did a bit of research and found that you can have PiP on your Mac using Chrome — and it works almost exactly the same way that Safari does, except you can either use the built-in method ( courtesy How-To Geek ) or a Google PiP extension.

Use the built-in feature:

  • Right click on the YouTube video you want to make into a PiP
  • As with Safari, the first menu you’ll get will be YouTube’s right-click menu. So right click again (outside of the menu). You’ll get a Chrome menu with a “Picture in Picture” selection; click on that.

Right-click twice in the YouTube video to get the Picture in Picture menu selection.

Again, as with Safari, the PiP functionality is pretty basic; you can move the video anywhere around the screen, pause it, and return it to its YouTube window. However, don’t expect to get any captions with it; the captions will continue to run on the original YouTube page.

Use Google’s PiP extension:

There is no perceivable advantage to using the extension over the built-in right-click feature; both give you the same simple (but effective) PiP feature.

  • In the Chrome Web Store, find the Picture-in-Picture extension . Click on the “Add to Chrome” button.
  • You will be asked for permission to “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit”
  • Once the extension is installed, you can access it either by clicking on the new PiP icon to the right of your address field or hitting the option+P keys.

You can move the PiP image anywhere in your screen; however, captions won’t move with it.

That’s it! Enjoy your video.

Update June 23rd, 2020, 10:08AM ET: This article was originally published on December 27th, 2019, and it has been updated to include instructions on PIP in Chrome.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

Today's NYT Connections Hints and Answer for June 14 (#369)

Here's how ai will transform the iphone, ipad, and mac this fall, 10 ways to improve call quality on your iphone.

Using YouTube in the Safari browser isn't the best experience. The YouTube app isn't much better, as it lacks some essential features. A new Safari extension called Vinegar replaces the YouTube player with a small HTML one.

Related: How to Turn On YouTube Picture-in-Picture for iPhone

The new extension is developed by And a Dinosaur (via Daring Fireball ), which also made a  Web Inspector , a developer console for Safari, a tool that redirects AMP pages called AMP Shockwave , and others . Basically, it replaces the default YouTube player in mobile Safari with its own player (similar to YouTube5).

This is important because it removes  in-video ads , prevents YouTube from tracking your play and pause activities, adds picture-in-picture functionality, keeps the videos playing if you switch to another tab , and lets you play an audio-only stream. Whether you're on the dedicated YouTube website or watching a video embedded in another site, these features work.

Related: Want to Remove Ads on YouTube? It May Get Cheaper Soon

These features have been missing from YouTube on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, even though they were significant selling points of the operating system for other video apps.

Vinegar isn't a free extension, but thankfully it's just a one-time $1.99 payment to get it, so you won't need to deal with the subscriptions or in-app purchases that are all over so many other applications nowadays. If you've always wished YouTube had these critical functions on iPhone, then it's worth a look.

YouTube Doesn't Allow PiP on the iPhone. Here's How You Can Do It Anyway.

Use this trick to get a floating window for any YouTube video on iOS.

youtube safari extension

YouTube got rid of PiP on iOS, but there is a workaround.

Apple introduced Picture in Picture mode back in 2020 with the release of iOS 14, which allows you to watch videos in a floating window anywhere on your phone or tablet. If you want to watch Netflix or HBO Max without being in the app, you can easily do so by swiping up out of it, which usually enables PiP by default. Unfortunately, PiP doesn't work with every third-party video streaming app on iOS, including YouTube.

YouTube's iPhone app has offered a Picture in Picture feature to YouTube Premium subscribers as an experiment for nearly a year now, but recently the popular video-sharing service confirmed on Twitter that the feature has been removed. PiP appears to remain available if you've already activated it, but if you haven't, YouTube hasn't mentioned a date for its return.

Just to clarify – what's currently being rolled out is the YouTube TV picture-in-picture for iOS 15+ devices. If you're referring to the one for the YouTube app, it's only available to Premium members on Android mobile phones. https://t.co/wB9vUWtm3U — TeamYouTube (@TeamYouTube) April 11, 2022

The announcement came after YouTube sent out a since-deleted message on Twitter stating that PiP would soon be available for everyone, causing confusion for viewers who were hoping to enjoy the feature. YouTube tweeted out: "Are you using an iOS smartphone? If so, the Picture-in-Picture feature is still rolling out & will be available in a matter of days across all iOS 15+ devices. Tweet back @ us if needed."

It turned out the announcement was about the YouTube TV service instead, which apparently is rolling out PiP for iOS users, and that was then followed up by another announcement from the official YouTube TV Twitter account. YouTube did mention that PiP is still available for the regular YouTube app, but only for premium members on Android, which wasn't the case until pretty recently (it's been widely available on iOS).

Fortunately, if you're an iPhone user and still want to access the removed feature, there's a workaround to get YouTube to work with PiP on iOS -- and it doesn't require a premium subscription.

Use the PiPifier app on your iPhone or iPad to get Picture in Picture

To use Picture in Picture with YouTube on iOS, you'll first need to download PiPifier, an app from Arno Appenzeller that acts as an extension for Safari and allows you to use PiP with any HTML5 video (essentially every web video on iOS) in Safari. That includes YouTube, but only if you access it in your web browser.

PiPifier's page in the App Store showing screenshots of the app

PiPifier is free to download on the App Store.

PiPifier is free to download from the App Store and works on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac. It requires at least iOS 15, iPadOS 15 or MacOS 12 (the Apple M1 chip version) to work properly.

Enable the PiPifier extension in Safari

Once you download the app, you don't need to open it -- you can go straight to Safari to turn on the extension. In Safari, tap the AA icon on the top-left, go into Manage Extensions , toggle on PiPifier and hit Done . This will enable the PiPifier extension in Safari, which means you can now use it directly from the website settings menu.

In Safari, go to AA > Manage Extensions to enable PiPifier.

How to use Picture in Picture with YouTube on the iPhone and iPad

To use Picture in Picture with YouTube, open the Safari app, go to the YouTube website and find the video you want to watch. Now tap the AA icon on the top left and hit the PiPifier option in the menu that appears. A small floating window should appear at the bottom of your screen, playing the YouTube video.

Screenshot of PiPifier in a dropdown menu.

Run PiPifier from the AA icon in Safari.

You can then swipe out of Safari and the floating window will follow you wherever you go, including your home screen and other applications. Use your fingers to move the floating window around the screen, and pinch in and out to resize it accordingly. If you tap on the floating window, you have options to fast-forward, rewind and play or pause the video, as well as maximize it to full-screen. To close the floating window, tap on the X icon on the top left of the window.

A PiP YouTube video playing on top of a phone's home screen

You can now watch YouTube videos from anywhere on your iPhone.

Functionality of a PiP video, in comparison to using the YouTube app, is pretty much the same: You can like and save videos, create a queue and leave a comment. The user interface is a bit clunkier, so it's more difficult to use, but if you're only using PiPifier with the YouTube website, you shouldn't really run into any major issues.

This Safari Extension on a Mac finally blocks YouTube's worst feature

Getting rid of my greatest bugbear of YouTube.

Eat the Shorts Safari extension on macOS

If you dislike YouTube Shorts as much as I have since they debuted back in September 2020, there's a new Safari Extension that can erase them when you're in Apple's web browser on a Mac .

I've never seen the point of YouTube Shorts. I go onto YouTube on my best Mac to watch certain channels in the early morning, or during my lunch break to catch up on Shark Tank and Dragons' Den videos - if I wanted to look at ten-second videos, I'd go on TikTok or look at Stories on Instagram for something similar.

Thankfully, Eat the Shorts is here. Created by Aaron Pearce, it's a Safari extension that will erase any mention of Shorts. You can grab it for a one-time purchase of $1.99 / £1.79 on the Mac App Store . Looks like I'm not alone in my distaste for YouTube Shorts.

Eat all of our shorts

Eat the Shorts is now available on the macOS App Store. Block YouTube Shorts in Safari with a simple install for just $1.99. https://t.co/zyyJRtKRYA #youtubeshorts #YouTube pic.twitter.com/KDiHmmDT8d January 30, 2023

Eat the Shorts is Mac only and solves a big issue for me. I'd love to see a way that Eat the Shorts can arrive on iOS and iPadOS when I'm in YouTube's app as well. At the moment, you can hide them for thirty days by pressing on the three dots above the section, but I'd like things to go even further.

Unfortunately, the Apple App store guidelines dictate how apps interact, and it means that extensions like this can be a lot more locked down on mobile platforms. That makes things like Eat the Shorts harder to get working on Safari on iOS and iPadOS. It's not impossible, but for a one-person team you can see why it might be out of reach for now.

Regardless, Eat the Shorts is already solving YouTube's biggest problem for me as I browse the site to look for background music as I work today, and for that one-time price, it's all I need.

How to download YouTube videos using Safari or Firefox

youtube safari extension

If you’ve spent more than a couple of hours on the Web you understand that the thing is choked with videos—from YouTube to Vimeo to news and entertainment sites. There’s so much, in fact, that it’s hard to watch everything you want to when you’re sitting down in front of your computer. And because there is, it’s not uncommon to seek ways to capture that video for later viewing on other devices or when an Internet connection isn’t available.

Capturing Web video can be a one- or multi-step process, depending on how the original content is encoded and protected. For example, it’s fairly easy to download MPEG-4-encoded content and play those videos on your Mac and iOS devices because MPEG-4 is natively supported on these devices. However, many websites continue to offer videos encoded in the Flash (flv) format. While you can play these videos in a browser or with a third-party application such as the VideoLAN client (or in QuickTime Player if you’ve installed the Perian plug-in ), you must convert these to a format compatible with iOS devices. Easy or difficult, it’s possible to capture just about any video on the Web. Let’s explore how.

Downloading files with a Web browser

If you’re using Safari you’ll find that there’s no obvious command for capturing streaming YouTube videos, but it can be done with the browser’s built-in tools provided that you’re downloading a Flash file. For example, navigate to a YouTube video you want to capture and start it playing. Press Command-Option-A to produce Safari’s Activity window. In this window you’ll see the name of the video followed by the word YouTube . In the list of links below look for an entry of several megabytes that appears to be loading. Option-double-click on it and it will download to your Mac as an flv file. As mentioned earlier, you can then play this file with a third-party tool. Unfortunately, you can’t download MPEG-4 files using this method. For those files, turn to Firefox or a third-party tool.

Speaking of Firefox, its users have a better option thanks to the free DownloadHelper extension . Once you’ve installed the extension, a DownloadHelper icon appears in Firefox’s address bar at the top of the browser window, or in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window (we found different behavior on different Macs). Start playing a video and click on the icon and you’ll see one or more listings for the video. If you’re looking at a YouTube video (the extension supports downloads from many different sites) you’ll see multiple listings—some in Flash format and others in MPEG-4 format. Choose one of the MPEG-4 versions (standard or high definition, for example) and it downloads to your Mac, ready to play in iTunes, QuickTime Player, or another video player of your choosing. If a site offers only one version of the video—MPEG-4 or Flash—you’ll see the option to download only that file.

youtube safari extension

If that file is in the MPEG-4 format, you’re set. Just download and play it. However, if it’s a Flash file you may wish to convert it so you can play it in iTunes and on your iOS devices. DownloadHelper can do that but only if you’ve installed the FFMpeg or Mencoder libraries—a process that requires some knowledge of the Terminal application and the wherewithal to track down the correct library builds. Otherwise, there are many tools to convert your videos.

Third-party tools

Regrettably, not all websites provide video in MPEG-4 format. If you want to view downloaded flv files with an application that doesn’t support Flash, or watch them on your iOS device, you must convert them. There are a variety of ways to go about this.

youtube safari extension

But first a word on how to not go about it. If you search the Web for video conversion tools, you’ll find many of them. Most aren’t worth your while. These are poorly-built applications produced by companies that promote these tools via spam and fake reviews. Worse yet, some of them cost upwards of $40, which is far too much to pay when there are some perfectly fine tools that do the job for free.

One of those free tools is Video Monkey (   ), an application that borrows heavily from the beloved-but-now-discontinued VisualHub . Once you’ve downloaded a movie using one of the methods described earlier, just launch Video Monkey, drop your movie into its window, and choose the output device or video format you want to use. Video Monkey offers batch conversion and includes a quality slider. It can also add your converted movies to iTunes when it completes its work.

Shedworx’s free Smart Converter (Mac App Store link) is another good choice. It too can convert flv videos as well as audio files. Just drop your videos into the Smart Converter window, choose a preset (Apple TV, iPad, or iPhone/iPod, to name a few), and click Convert. The free version of Smart Converter doesn’t support batch processing however. If you want that, turn to the $10 Smart Converter Pro (Mac App Store link).

youtube safari extension

Although $15 isn’t free, it’s not terribly expensive either. If you’d prefer to capture and convert in one step, take a look at TastyApps’ Videobox . To use Videobox, just drag the URL for a video you want to download into the Videobox window. A mini-browser window appears that includes the contents of the page the video is posted on, and an entry for the video appears in Videobox’s window. Click on the Download icon and a Save As window appears. From the Output For pop-up menu, choose the format you’d like to save the video in—iDVD/iMovie, iPad, iPod Classic, iPod touch/iPhone, or Mac Viewing are some of the choices—and click the Save button. (Click the Show Settings button in this window and you can further adjust the video settings.) Videobox downloads and then converts the video.

Brute force

And then there’s the ugly way—using a screen capture utility to grab video and audio in real time. You can do this with QuickTime Player by choosing File -> New Screen Recording, but you won’t be able to capture the video’s audio until you install Cycling ’74’s free Soundflower. To do that, download and install Soundflower, open the Sound system preference, and choose Soundflower (2-ch) in the Output tab. Within QuickTime’s Screen Recording window, click on the triangle and under the Microphone heading choose Soundflower (2ch). Start the recording and then start the video playing.

The results from a QuickTime Player capture can be choppy, even on a fast Mac. In such cases, you may want to turn to a dedicated screen capture application such as Ambrosia Software’s $69 Snapz Pro X , Shinywhitebox’s $30 iShowU HD Pro, TechSmith’s $99 Camtasia 2 or Telestream’s $99 ScreenFlow 3 (   ).

Notion, one of the best productivity apps for Mac , also has a browser extension called "Web Clipper." Its operation is similar to Safari's Reading List, but it saves the web page to Notion instead of in the browser.

After installing, you can click Notion's icon (N) in the top-right corner, and a dialog will ask you for details to save the page. You can change the title, select the location to which you want to save it, and even create a new database for all your important links.

Once you save the link, you can launch Notion from the extension and view the page in the app. You can organize all your links from here and save them into pre-existing folders. This is a must-have if you regularly use Notion to conduct research and need to reference different articles.

2. Master for YouTube

Google often likes to add and remove features, as is evident with its redesign of the YouTube app in 2022. The Master for Youtube Safari extension solves this issue by bringing back certain features. For example, you can't sort videos by "oldest" anymore, but this extension adds that option to the site.

It also hides videos and content in a better way, considering they never appear on your homepage again. The extension also allows you to darken the background, expand the video player, block ads, or even hide comments. Another interesting feature is that it allows you to control the volume using the mouse's scroll wheel.

3. Awesome Screenshot & Recorder

Awesome Screenshot & Recorder takes taking screenshots in macOS to the next level and helps you manage your team better. It does so by not only letting you take regular screenshots but also allowing you to record your screen, with the option to record yourself with the webcam as well.

The screenshots or screen recordings you take can instantly be uploaded to the cloud or saved locally on your Mac. You can also select what section of the screen you want to capture, screenshot the entire screen, and access all images/videos from the Safari extension itself.

Awesome Screenshot also features helpful annotation tools and allows you to batch-edit multiple screenshots in one go. You can view these screenshots and recordings through the extension and share them via third-party apps such as Slack, Google Drive, Dropbox, and more.

4. 1Password

1Password is a password manager that can generate and store all your passwords in one place. It is available on almost every browser, and you can even download it to your iPhone or iPad. You can sync your passwords across your devices, making it easy to log in wherever you are.

Apart from storing and creating unique passwords, it also allows you to share login information with others, sign in via Touch ID or Face ID, and enable two-factor authentication on accounts that support it. It even allows you to store your crypto credentials .

In the case of a data leak, the extension will notify you if your information is compromised. 1Password will also soon add support for passkeys. It's an excellent extension that integrates with Safari and saves you a lot of time by auto-filling your login information on various sites.

5. DuckDuckGo Privacy

DuckDuckGo Privacy might be the best Safari extension for protecting your privacy and making sure your online experience is secure. This extension integrates with Safari across all of your Apple devices while keeping the settings in sync.

It is packed with privacy and security tools that can block cookies, track third-party requests and remove unnecessary pop-ups from almost every website on the web. The extension's simple interface will let you know if the connection is encrypted, and if any trackers or third-party requests were found.

On top of that, the DuckDuckGo Privacy extension grades every website you visit, and you can click the extension to see an explanation for this score. It tells you if a website uses poor privacy practices and also explains why it may not be safe for you. So, you can quickly bounce off sites that are a threat to you, saving lots of time as a result.

The extension is also available for the mobile version of Safari on iPhones. Since the settings are synced across devices, it makes sure that you are getting the same features on every platform.

6. Grammarly

Grammarly is a professional proofreading and spell-checking tool. It helps you monitor grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and cohesiveness. Besides checking simple typing mistakes, Grammarly will often suggest rephrasing sentences for better readability. All of this makes editing content faster and saves you the time spent on proofreading, in turn making you more productive.

Another great feature is that it can show you definitions and synonyms for a word if you double-click it. There's a premium version of the extension that helps you improve your vocabulary, detect plagiarism, and even cite sources where needed.

The best part is that while the premium features are great, the free tools do enough to help you write better. Grammarly also tells you what sort of tone you are writing in, and that feature is free as well.

The tool is available as an extension for Safari and works with WordPress, Google Docs, and other online writing tools. You can also use Grammarly on your iPhone or iPad .

Download: Grammarly (Free, subscription available)

7. Instapaper Save

Instapaper is one of the best read-it-later apps that allows you to save any content on the web and view it later. This could include podcasts, videos, or simple articles on the web like the one you're reading right now. You can categorize any content you save into different folders, making it easy to compile several reading lists.

Instapaper is available for Safari and other browsers and even works on mobile devices. It's a better alternative to Apple's Reading Lists since you also get Android and Windows support. The reading interface is simple and blocks out any ads you would see on a traditional web page.

This extension also provides a curated list of suggested reading material based on your saves. It's an excellent tool for anyone who spends a lot of time researching stuff online.

Turn Safari Into a Productivity Powerhouse With These Extensions

While Safari is a decent browser in its own right, using these extensions will allow you to turn it into something much more powerful. There's no need to sit around and wait for Apple to add new features, as these extensions do that on their own.

These extensions show us exactly why software is important. As you can see, they help you collaborate with a team, capture screenshots, or organize your daily tasks in the form of a digital to-do list.

Bug fixes and performance improvements

Ratings and Reviews

Fantastic features. slows down safari.

Love the additional functionality and ability to organize my subscriptions into folders. There are features that are super useful I hadn't even thought of. All for FREE! The only downside is that the 'subscription' page on YouTube loads really slow on Safari on my Mac with this extension enabled. Is there a way to resolve this?

Developer Response ,

Yes, the subscription page with selected filters open is not fast. I'm going to optimize it in the next versions. Also, you can use feed mode, click on the monitor icon near the subscription group, it is fast.
As soon as i downloaded PocketTube my MacBook Pro halted to ridicuously slow speeds. This was for my entire desktop, no matter which application I was running. I toggled off the PocketTube safari extension and my computer was instantly back to fast speeds. I turned it back on and my computer could hardly move the mouse or close out of apps. I uninstalled PocketTube and moved to trash and now my computer works like new again. I just got this MacBook Pro less than a week ago so it was 100% this extension. Might be malware. Avoid this.
I can't reproduce the behavior. In my PC it works great on any browser.

No issues here

I don't see these Safari slowdowns some other people have. Works smoothly and seamlessly on my M1 MBP. Thumbs up from me.
Glad to hear it!

Safari 18 Features: Highlights, New Reader Mode, and Video Viewer

In macOS Sequoia , Apple has some additional features in Safari 18 that are likely to be welcomed by Mac users. Here's a quick rundown of what's new.

safari highlights

Highlights can be accessed via a new site menu icon that appears in the address bar, from which you can quickly pull up relevant information about a site, such as directions, summaries, or quick links to learn more about people, music, movies, and TV shows.

As of writing this, Highlights does not appear to work outside of the United States, so it is likely to be region-specific at this early state. However, there are other changes to Safari that are live wherever you are located.

safari 18 reader

If you click the button again, a dropdown menu lets you change the theme (white, off-white, gray, black) and choose your preferred font (Athelas, Charter, Georgia, Iowan, New York, Palatino, San Fransisco, Seravek, and Times New Roman).

In this menu, you can also find text size options by percentage (from 50% to 300%), as well as a "Find..." option to find a word or phrase on a page, and a button to Hide Reader mode.

Apple says that Reader can also provide a summary of an article, along with a table of contents in a sidebar, but we could not get this to work, likely because it is an aspect of Apple Intelligence , which will not be introduced until later in the year.

safari video viewer

In other Safari-related changes, ‌macOS Sequoia‌ beta adds support for opening links directly in web apps. Now, when you click a link, that link should open in the web app instead of your default web browser. You can also now personalize web apps on Mac with Safari Web Extensions and Content Blockers.

Lastly, Safari 18 beta for iOS, iPadOS, visionOS , ‌macOS Sequoia‌ and macOS Sonoma brings inline predictive text to the web, and you can now set which Safari profile should be used to open particular websites.

People still use Safari? I tried it when i first had my Mac, but I could nto get on with it, then I tried it again a few weeks ago, but had problems with some sites not working, so I have gone back to Firefox.

Manzanito Avatar

Safari is still the second-most used browser. Far behind Chrome but also far ahead of Firefox. Of course, most of that is iOS/iPadOS. But even on the desktop, Safari is ahead of Firefox and Safari is not even available on Windows & Linux, unlike Firefox. So yeah... People still use FireFox? :D

10 browser extensions to power up your personal productivity

Turn your web browser into a productivity powerhouse with these top extensions

Key Takeaways

  • Boost your productivity by adding a few choice extensions to your web browser for improved focus and efficiency.
  • Extensions like 1Password, Save Image as Type, and Mailtrack can help you manage passwords, image downloads, and emails.
  • Stay organized and focused with tools like Todoist, ClickUp, and Toggl, which track tasks, manage projects, and analyze time usage.

Staying productive when your web browser is open is often an exercise in self-control. Sure, for some tasks, you could get your browser to read the text out loud to you , but you'll have to reach for the mouse and keyboard at some point. At which point, you'll have to resist staying away from YouTube, or social media, or any of the other millions of distracting elements online. However, you might be surprised at how productive you can be by just adding a few choice extensions to your web browser. Whether those extensions are for Chrome , Edge, Safari , Firefox, or any of the underrated browsers , they can turn you into a person with a proclivity for productivity, and that's got a nice ring to it.

Best web browsers for Windows in 2023

10 1password, for managing passwords and more.

Web browsers like Chrome and Safari have their own built-in password managers, but what if you use a variety of browsers on multiple devices? Then you need a more powerful password manager extension like 1Password, which can sync your secrets across any devices you own. It can save passwords, payment details, notes, addresses, passkeys, and more. Any Chromium-based browser can use the Chrome extension, but it also has options for Safari, Firefox, Brave, and Edge. There's also a system-wide app for Windows, Linux, or macOS, and mobile apps for iOS and Android, so you don't have to remember long, complicated passwords on any of your devices.

Secure your passwords, personas, and credit cards behind industry standard encryption to keep your data safe while online.

9 Save image as Type

Stop struggling to download images.

After 1Password, this handy extension is the one I use the most to stay productive. Ever find you downloaded an image with your web browser, and it downloaded in a format that your computer refused to open, like WebP or AVIF? I have, and it's one of the most frustrating parts of the modern web for me. Instead of having to hunt for another program to read and convert those image files to a usable one, I just use Save image as Type, which lets me choose to save an image as JPG, PNG, or WebP. It does the conversion for me as it downloads from the web, which is awesome. That way, I can be far more productive with fewer wasted minutes per image I have to process.

Save image as Type

This handy, simple extension enables you to choose your preferred format when downloading images from the web.

8 Mailtrack

Never wonder if that email got buried.

Email is the productivity killer. Email is the little-death that brings total obliteration. We're not going to go all Bene Gesserit on you and force you to put your typing hand into a little box, but you can get some lost productivity back by managing your email inbox with this extension. It gives your Gmail inbox the read receipts that you're used to in instant messaging services like Signal , WhatsApp, and Telegram, so you know if your message is getting through. If you know your mail isn't being read, or is being opened but not replied to, you know it's time to change tactics to get your response rates up. That will definitely make you more productive with anyone you communicate with.

Everyone's inboxes are overflowing, but you can at least know if the email you sent was read or lost in the pile with Mailtrack.

7 Awesome Screenshot and Screen Recorder

Supercharge your screenshots.

While every operating system has in-built tools for screenshots or video recording, they're pretty bare-bones and require trimming or editing after the capture for the best possible results. Awesome Screenshot and Screen Recorder supercharges your screenshots, so you can capture specific sections of webpages or even scrolling screenshots of an entire webpage. It can also record the contents of the browser window, but the most powerful feature is being able to record a browser tab while overlaying your webcam's feed. That's a perfect feature for making tutorials or short guides to provide tech support for a family member, and is an invaluable tool for your browser.

Awesome Screenshot and Screen Recorder

Awesome Screenshot and Screen Recorder makes it easy to capture customized sections of your browser window or desktop, for guides, marketing, or other illustrative purposes.

6 LanguageTool

Grammar checking is essential.

If you're the type to make typos or grammar mistakes while typing (and who isn't, let's be honest), you'll love this extension. LanguageTool hovers over your web browser while you type, and offers suggestions to make your spelling and grammar top-notch. It's my favorite extension for writing help, as it outperforms the competition with clear, concise corrections, so I can get back to writing with minimum fuss. I like that it also shows a small explainer about why it's correcting things, along with the relevant grammatical rules that I was inadvertently breaking. I can write either with the extension keeping watch, or, on the web app, which even includes tone and handy paraphrasing tools.

LanguageTool

Grammar and spellcheckers are often hidden behind paywalls, but the basic version of LanguageTool is free to use and does a great job with correcting any minor errors.

Grow your potential

Being your most productive self also means accountability, staying focused on the task at hand even with a jungle of distractions around us. The Forest extension is a cute pomodoro timer, which you can set for the time interval you want to focus on uninterrupted work. It helps you do this by only letting you visit the websites you've specifically allowed, or it can work by blocking you from a specified list of sites you're not supposed to be visiting when you should be concentrating. The fun part is that you get an animation of a tree growing from a tiny sprout to a giant grove. Oh, and the tangible punishment for breaking whatever rules you set for yourself? Your tree, flower, or shrub will wither and die, remaining as a black mark on your growing record forever. Or for however long the extension stays around, but as it's been around for a decade now, helping plant the seed of productivity across the world, so that could be a long time indeed.

Grow a tree in your browser with uninterrupted focus, and turn the digital coins you earn into real-world planted trees, with this great extension.

Lists to stay organized

Many productivity extensions and apps give the illusion of productivity in multiple layers of busywork. Not Todoist, which makes the job of creating and following to-do lists quick and easy. The browser extension opens when clicked, and shows all of your current tasks to grant you the endorphin hit of ticking them off once they're complete. I like to use it for organizing my next day before I sleep, so I don't have to remember any complicated instructions when I'm still sleepy in the morning. But it's also great for other things, like adding the website you're browsing to a pending task for later use.

Lists, lists and more lists, but this extension is great for keeping you organized and ahead of your daily tasks.

Manage everything in one place

Sometimes a simple to-do list isn't enough, and you need a wider range of productivity tools to get your grind going. ClickUp is a scalable project management tool that lives in the cloud, or your browser extension bar, and enables collaboration, communication, and a lot of customization. You get time tracking, including estimates of the work to be done, automation of boring and repetitive tasks, and tons of different page views to help you find one that works best for you. Or, you can create your own dashboard from the dozens of widgets and tailor it to the tasks in front of you. It's also great for managing a team of one, as a flexible freelancing organization tool.

Want a project management tool that lives in your browser? Sounds good to me.

Track the time you waste

Ever found yourself in a job situation where you require accurate tracking of your time spent on tasks? It's a tricky thing to track, so that you can calculate not only effective billing of clients but your personal productivity. Toggl has a ton of handy features, but the one standout is detailed reporting. It will give you invaluable insights into how you use your time at work, and while it won't instantly make you more productive, it will show you what to change to get there. The detailed reports will identify any problem areas for improvement, giving you the least productive tasks to pare down, so that you can spend that time more wisely on high-priority ones.

Toggl Track

Toggl tracks your time spent doing tasks, so you can figure out where your effort is better spent and be more productive.

Time is money, so don't waste either

To be more productive, it helps to get tasks done in the minimum amount of effort and time. E-commerce is one way to reclaim your day, as you can simply shop online and get almost anything delivered right to your door within a few clicks. Except, how do you know whether that purchase is a good deal? You could spend time clicking through multiple e-commerce websites, comparing prices, or even reading sites like XDA where we do the hard work for you .

Or, you could install the Honey extension, and make things even easier. The service's database of discount codes and deals means less coupon hunting, and you can even claim cash back with some retailers. That's less time hunting for deals, more time for things that actually matter, like your family or the pursuit of happiness.

Honey is the extension for bargain hunters so they don't lose a minute of time searching for a great deal.

Productivity is what you make of the tools at your disposal

Each of these extensions can make your web browser a powerhouse of productivity. It's about finding the ones that fit well within your workflow, as the best tools are the ones you want to keep using. From managing large-scale projects with ClickUp, to personal ones with Todoist, keeping your online accounts safe with 1Password, or outsmarting the websites that only want you downloading images in WebM with Save Image as Type, you might be surprised at how much you can accomplish with only a web browser. And if you can't find the productivity tool you need here, you can always learn how to write your own browser extension .

For anyone who hoped that the Eras Tour might get an extension into its third calendar year with added dates in 2025, Taylor Swift has disabused them of that notion, affirming that her global trek really will come to a close with its currently scheduled final dates in North America in December of this year.

Swift made the proclamation while performing the 100th date of the tour on the first night of a weekend engagement in Liverpool on Thursday.

“And that feels like so far away from now,” she added. “But then again, it feels like we just played our first show on this tour. Because you have made this so much fun for us that we wanted to do a hundred shows, 150-something shows that we have on the whole tour.

“And I think that  this tour has really become my entire life. Like, it’s taken over everything. I think I once had hobbies, but I don’t know what they were anymore. Because all I do when I’m not on stage is like sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear.  So when I’m not on the stage, I’m dreaming about being back on the stage with you guys. And you have done so much to be with us. You’vee made plans so far in advance. You planned what you were gonna wear, you memorized lyrics, you got yourselves here, you figured out parking, you figured out transportation. … And just know that I appreciate every single ounce of effort that you put in to be with us, (as) this tour reaches triple digits of of shows.”

Although Swift’s camp has not released any box office grosses from the tour, industry experts believe the total gross will surpass $2 billion by the time it wraps up in December. The closest runner-up will remain Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” which grossed $939 million over a five-year span.

Swift’s European tour will wrap up Aug. 20 with the second of two runs in London’s Wembley Stadium. From there, she is scheduled to take time off from the road before returning to U.S. stadiums in November for the first time since late 2023, doing shows in just three U.S. cities — Miami, Indianapolis and New Orleans — before the tour concludes in late November and early December with six shows in Toronto and three in Vancouver. The last date is scheduled in the latter Canadian city for Dec. 8.
