Westpac Complimentary Credit Card Insurance and COVID-19 (Coronavirus) FAQ

Information for westpac eligible cardholders regarding covid-19.

Information on this page is correct as of  30 June 2022 .

Stay up to date on Travel Information for COVID-19 from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)  Smartraveller  website and  World Health Organisation  (WHO) and  Department of Home Affairs .

Always consult the smartraveller.gov.au website prior to any travel. In addition to visas, COVID-19 testing, and proof of vaccination requirements, many countries now have compulsory insurance and medical cover proof conditions. Check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you are entering. If you require additional documentation regarding the complimentary international travel insurance policy due to international entry requirements, please contact us on 1800 091 710.

From 30 June 2022, if during the period of your cover, you (and your spouse/dependents, if they’re eligible for cover) are positively diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic (such as COVID-19), cover may be available under the following sections:

  • 1.1 Overseas Emergency Assistance
  • 1.2 Overseas Emergency Medical
  • 1.4 Medical Evacuation & Repatriation
  • 2.1 Cancellation
  • 3.1 Additional Expenses

If your travel companion is positively diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic, such as COVID-19, which impacts your journey, cover may be available to you under the following sections:

Note, you won’t be covered while travelling against advice or warnings issued by the Australian government and you did not take reasonable care to avoid contracting the sickness, for example by delaying travel to the country listed in a warning.

The above is a summary only, please refer to  Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet   and  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet  for eligibility criteria, full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

A General Exclusion for epidemic/pandemic applies for all claims relating to any epidemic/pandemic outside of the select benefits in the applicable policy information booklet  Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet   and  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet . Please note, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply.

To receive a formal outcome, Eligible Westpac Cardholders must submit a claim.

Eligible Westpac travellers who meet the eligibility criteria should be aware that other General Exclusions have the potential to apply.

What is a General Exclusion?

A General Exclusion is an exclusion which will be applied across all sections of an insurance policy, and applies regardless of when eligibility for cover was gained. Should a General Exclusion apply, this means that your complimentary credit card travel insurance excludes cover for the event, activities or circumstances (specified in the exclusion) that causes your claim.

To understand what is excluded from the Westpac Complimentary Insurance covers, please refer to Part D – Excesses & General Exclusions section and the section specific exclusions of the relevant Westpac Policy Information Booklet for which your eligible Westpac card is applicable under:  Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet    and  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet .

Other exclusions may apply depending upon the circumstances of an individual claim. General Exclusions include but are not limited to:

  • by the Australian government (when a ‘Reconsider your need to travel’ or ‘Do not travel’ alert is in place), which can be found on  www.smartraveller.gov.au ; or
  • which was published in a reliable mass media source.
  • any interference with your travel plans by any government, government regulation or prohibition or intervention or official authority. For example, if  Smartraveller  has a warning, ‘Do not travel’ or ‘Reconsider your need to travel’ due to the risk of COVID-19 infection for a destination, and a cardholder chooses to ignore the warning and is infected with COVID-19, cover may be excluded. Or if a government closes its borders to inbound travellers due to COVID-19 and you are unable to enter and follow your planned travel across the closed border, cover may be excluded.

What if a Westpac Eligible Cardholder has booked travel and needs to cancel due to contracting COVID-19?

If you are unable to travel as a result of contracting COVID-19, Cancellation cover may be provided to eligible travellers, if you or your travel companion are positively diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic such as COVID-19, and cover is expressly included under the Cancellation section of the relevant Westpac Policy Information Booklet for which your eligible Westpac card is applicable under:  Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet   and  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet . If you are unable to travel as a result of an Epidemic or Pandemic related event which does not include you or your travel companion being positively diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic, for example a border closure, there may be no provision to claim as a general exclusion for epidemic and pandemic applies. A General Exclusion for epidemic/pandemic applies for all claims relating to any epidemic/pandemic outside of the cancellation benefits in the applicable policy information booklet. Please note, terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply.

You therefore need to consider your own personal circumstances. We are not able to provide you with a cover decision before submitting a claim. To receive a formal outcome, Westpac Eligible Cardholders must submit a claim.

You should also contact your travel agent or travel service provider (airline, cruise line or Tour Company, etc) as they may be able to support you in obtaining refunds, credits or travel re-scheduling.

Can Westpac Eligible Cardholders make a claim for consideration?

Every Westpac Eligible Cardholder can submit a claim and have their individual circumstances considered in accordance with the eligibility criteria which includes the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions that apply as set out in the  Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet    and  Westpac Business Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet .

If you would like to claim, we encourage you to claim online via  insurance.agaassistance.com.au/westpac

Creditcard.com.au review

Editor review, who suits the westpac altitude black card, editor’s overall review.

If you spend a lot of time on the road or in the air, the Westpac Altitude Black could make life a little more comfortable and save a dollar or two. It includes a ton of travel perks including lounge passes and global travel insurance.

At $295 per year, it sits in the mid-range of rewards cards, and the annual fee is offset for the first two years by the annual fee discount the first year, and the value of the bonus points on offer.

While many people tend to overlook concierge services, Westpac has upped its game by giving you access to a number of discounts, hard-to-get tickets and exclusive events by partnering with Ten Lifestyle Services.

Editor’s Full Review: the Westpac Altitude Black

The Westpac Altitude Black has a few bright-and-shiny perks to catch your eye, especially if you’re a frequent traveller. It earns Westpac’s Altitude Points, so you can use your points flexibly, including fights with several different airlines.

First, I’ll unpack the promotional perks, and then we’ll look at how this card can be used as a globetrotter’s companion.

Bonus points: The bonus points are split into 2 parts: you’ll get 100,000 bonus Altitude Rewards points if you spend at least $6000 within 120 days of being approved for your card, and then another 50,000 points if you keep the card for more than 12 months.

To be eligible for the bonus points, you can’t have had an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card within the past 12 months. You have to apply and be approved before 31 July 2024.

Bonus points are credited to your account within 12 weeks of meeting the spending criteria. If you don’t meet the spending requirements for the initial 100,000 points, you can still earn the 50,000 points the following year.

Annual fee discounts: For the first year, you’ll pay $150 for the annual fee rather than $295. Existing Westpac customers can get an even bigger discount of $99 for the first year by logging in and applying through the online portal (this offer expires 31 July 2024).

Using the Westpac Altitude Black for travel

Like a well-stocked globetrotters bumbag, this card comes with almost every premium travel perk you could think of.

Let’s start with the different kinds of insurance. Some are specific to travel, and I've also included insurances that protect your purchases.

On top of insurances, you'll also get 2 lounge passes per year with Priority Pass , which has over 1200 premium lounges around the world you can use regardless of the airline you fly with. One of your passes can be gifted to a guest travelling with you, which is a very nice twist on the usual non-transferable rule.

If you want to use a Priority Pass lounge once your free visits are used up for the year, you can still enter the lounge for US$32 per person. You’ll need to enrol in Priority Pass once you have your Westpac Altitude Black card at www.prioritypass.com/westpacblack.

What about the Concierge and Lifestyle Services?

24 hours a day, you can request to have restaurant bookings (including off-beat bespoke requests), appointments, tickets to events, holidays, tours and more organised by a concierge on your behalf. When you book using Westpac’s concierge, you could also get other perks like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and exclusive seating at events.

Earning points with the Westpac Altitude Black

This card earns points in Westpac’s own Altitude Rewards program. I’ll explain what you can spend your points on in a moment, but first let’s look at how many points you can earn for your spending, and where.

Points per dollar and bonus points

The Altitude Black card is a little different in that you can earn bonus points for shopping with specific retailers and airlines (called Accelerated Earn). That means you can boost your points pretty quickly.

Here’s how it looks:

6 points per $1 on Qantas, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines and Emirates flights bought in Australia.

2 points for $1 at Spotify Premium, David Jones, Myer, THE ICONIC, Airbnb, Uber and Uber Eats.

1.25 points per $1 on other eligible everyday spending.

⚡ There is no limit to the amount of Altitude points you can earn. However, you’ll only earn 6 points per dollar on flights up to 10,000 points per month; after that, it drops to 1.25 points. On the plus side, there are no rewards program fees, and your points never expire.

Redeeming your Altitude Rewards points

The Westpac Altitude Rewards program is flexible, so you can use your points for almost anything you like. They can be redeemed for gift cards, cash back, with partnering airlines and other travel expenses, and through the Altitude Rewards online store.

Using your points for travel: You can spend your points on flights with Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand and Velocity. You can also use points for hotels, car hire and activities.

Using your points for cashback: While some cards let you choose a specific purchase on your statement and use points to pay it back, Westpac lets you choose an amount to deposit onto your card. For instance, you can choose to throw $50, $100, $500 or $1000 cashback onto your card.

Using your points for gift cards: Choose from popular retailers such as Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi, Woolworths and Ampol to gift to someone else, or offset your own purchases.

What’s not so great

While this is overall a good card, it does have some things that are worth pointing out. Firstly, you can’t redeem your points for Qantas points on this card (Westpac does offer credit cards that earn Qantas Points directly).

You’ll pay a 3% currency conversion fee when you spend overseas, and a $15 fee if you don’t pay the minimum monthly charges each month.

Who suits the Westpac Altitude Black?

This card is a good fit for people who travel frequently or want to bump up their points from shopping at specific stores. It earns points that can be redeemed flexibly, including with several different airlines. The Priority Pass lounge access is a great bonus and the travel insurance has coverage in Australia and overseas.

My husband holds this card and I am the sub holder. Does that mean I won’t be eligible for this bonus offer? Thank you!

Hi Angie, That’s fine, if you are an additional cardholder on his account, you would still be eligible to apply for a new account in your own name and get this offer. If you are joint account holders on the initial account and each have a card, you would not be eligible.

Hope this helps!

February 24, 2023

I was wondering if the 0.75 Velocity reward point rate would be applicable for payments made to the Australian Tax Office. I understand Westpac Altitude would not but is it different for a Velocity reward card?

Also is it strange that I am not able to view reward points earned per transaction? I have just spoken to Westpac Altitude customer support and they have confirmed it is not possible for me to view each individual transaction earn rate. I can just see the total for the month which is transferred to Velocity… but how can I be sure that it is correct?

Amy Bradney-George Finder

Unfortunately, you can’t earn Westpac Altitude or Velocity Points for payments to the ATO with this card. Finder has a guide on credit cards that earn points for ATO payments that may be helpful.

Regarding the amount of points, it’s common for credit cards to show a total amount rather than points earned per transaction. Adding up the eligible spending for a period and looking at the points earned is a simple way to check that it matches up. Just keep in mind that some transactions won’t be for whole dollars, so the value of the cents could affect the amount of points earned. I hope that helps!

February 14, 2023

1. With my current black card, I earn point with the dollar spending. With the Velocity card, does it work the same? 2. My Black card came with a Sub card, with the Velocity card do I still get the sub card? 3. How will you get the yearly complimentary Economy X Seat?

Hi Mike, Thanks for your questions, here are the responses: 1. Yes, this card earns Velocity Points per $1 on eligible spending, at the rate listed in this review and on the Westpac website. 2. You can add 1 additional cardholder to this account at no extra cost, as long as they are at least 16 years of age. 3. Avatar

Joshua Finder

Thanks for getting in touch with Finder. I hope all is well with you. 😃

The answer to your question is yes. Westpac Altitude Black comes with a foreign transaction fee. This is charged when you spend in a foreign currency. The fee is 3% of the transaction value.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

Have a wonderful day!

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
