Information on Val Rendena, Italy, Trentino

A holiday valley to fall in love with.

Surrounded by the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park in Trentino, the Rendena Valley is home to the characteristic small villages, sometimes just a few houses, small squares and a church. Hospitality, wonderful natural surroundings and a wide range of activities attract tourists from all over the world to Val Rendena, and especially to Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo , the two main attractions in the valley.

Madonna di Campiglio : The Ski World Cup has been held here since 1957. From the village alone you can practice skiing on 60 kilometres of slopes . With the merger with the Folgarida-Marilleva and PInzolo ski resorts, there are 150 km of slopes of all degrees of difficulty. But here, in the middle of the enchanting landscape of the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site , it is clearly not only skiing that dominates in winter.

There are more than 400 km of hiking trails spread throughout the Val Rendena in Italy. There are natural jewels without end to discover whilst hiking. Enthusiastic mountain bikers will also not feel left out. Golf enthusiasts will discover two beautiful greens at their disposal, and if you are in the mood for beauty and herbal treatments, the perfect place to stay is Caderzone, the oldest settlement in Val Rendena , Trentino.

Madonna di Campiglio & the Austrian Empire

You may wonder, what the famous ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio has to do with the Austrian Empire ? Why does Madonna di Campiglio have a "Piazza Sissi" and a restaurant called "La Stube di Franz Joseph"? And why is there a "Hapsburg Carnival' in February? Back in 1188, a hospice was founded in Madonna di Campiglio, which was leased by a businessman at the end of the 19th century. He had the monastic cells converted into rooms and founded a mountain hotel, where time and again climber pioneers came. The mountain village became famous, especially among members of the European nobility, and in 1889 Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Empress Elisabeth arrived in Madonna di Campiglio and went on many excursions. Franz Joseph and Sissi were so fascinated by this region that five years later, in 1894, they visited again.

Nestled among the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Val Rendena is a small world just 20 kilometers long that winds along the Sarca River. From the village of Verdesina it extends as far as Passo Campo Carlo Magno, at an altitude of 1,650 meters and is part of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park.

Belonging to the Giudicarie valleys, Val Rendena has many side valleys: Val San Valentino, Val Borzago and the beautiful Val Genova.

Surrounded by silence, unspoilt nature, villages, glamorous locations and top-level sporting events: ready to go there with us?

TOP 5 NOT TO BE MISSED

Challenge “3tre”, reaching lake nambino, admire the waterfalls of val genova, play golf on the highest golf course in europe, follow in the footsteps of san vigilio, porte di rendena.

To welcome you in the valley, the union of the municipalities of Darè, Vigo Rendena and Villa Rendena, united since 2016. The municipal seat is in Villa Rendena. All three villages, with their hamlets of Javrè and Verdesina are lesser-known holiday destinations, but certainly of historical and cultural interest, which can represent alternatives of peace and quiet in all seasons.

Already known in the 19th century, Darè is a mountain village with typical stone houses. The Casa Cues, is a testimony of medieval architecture that can catapult you back to ancient times. Noteworthy is the fountain in Piazza Roma, a large agora from which several paths start.

Vigo Rendena is partly climbed on the eastern slopes of the Corno Basso and partly lying on the valley floor, on the edge of a wide agricultural area. To see the Church of San Lorenzo and the Capitello della Madonna del Rosario.

The Rhaetian populations, followed by the Celts and finally the Romans, later occupied Villa Rendena, inhabited since the Bronze Age. The center of the village is framed by old houses with massive walls and granite portals; Piazza Maggiore also offers some interesting religious frescoes. Easily reachable from the center, we advise you to walk towards the little church of Pafsang, built in the 18th century with a unique wooden bell tower and rich in frescoes.

From the villages of Darè and Vigo you can reach the Val di San Valentino, which develops east west and is formed by three main branches. The easternmost, called Stracciola, Valletta, formed by the course of the Bedou brook of San Valentino, divided into low and high. Third, the Val Cavento at the foot of the southern slope of the Carè Alto. The main furrow goes as far as the San Valentino Pass (2765 meters above sea level), which is the oldest pass between Val Rendena and Val di Fumo, of which numerous documents testify the passages in ancient times. In the Middle Ages the valley was landslide due to pyrite mines, extracted from the left side perhaps already in the Bronze Age. The right side of the valley is an area of great naturalistic value.

SPIAZZO RENDENA

The village of Spiazzo was traditionally home to all the communities of Rendena: here was the seat of the parish church of Rendena, a seal of the centrality of the village and the religious charisma derived from the martyrdom of San Vigilio occurred in these very places. To visit the church dedicated to the saint, where according to tradition his martyrdom took place. The church dedicated to Saint Anthony, dating back to the 15th century, is unique and represents a combination of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

What you cannot miss in Spiazzo is the Adamellina White War Museum, a museum where all the objects found on the paths, even over three thousand meters, walked by soldiers during the Great War, have been collected.

Finally, the Cort da Togno is worth a visit to discover the frescoes depicting customs and habits, but also the extravagances of the Middle Ages: a curious testimony of how satire already existed in ancient times. From Spiazzo, going west, you can reach the Borzago valley. It is crossed by the Rio Bedù di Pelugo and develops in an east-west direction up to the glaciers of the eastern side of the Carè Alto.

Woods alternating with wide meadows and pastures, interrupted by scattered huts and small settlements that testify the typical alpine activities, characterize the lower part of the valley. Higher up, we find the ancient, now abandoned alpine huts, which mark the passage from pastures and conifer woods to the ruggedness of rocks and glaciers.

At an altitude of 2450 meters above sea level is the Rifugio Carè Alto, built in 1912 by a group of mountaineers from Rendena, in a panoramic position overlooking Val Rendena and the Brenta Dolomites.

Pinzolo is the biggest centre of the valley and it is the municipality that enclosesthe most famous tourist resort of this valley, Madonna di Campiglio.

Frequented in both summer and winter, Pinzolo is a perfect tourist destination for families. Alpine skiing is certainly the main reason for skiing weeks, which here in Pinzolo can be practiced on slopes mainly of medium difficulty.

Of particular historical interest, we invite you to visit the little church of San Vigilio, which dates back well before the year 1000. Outside, the priceless frescoes by Baschenis, one of the most important painters of 1500, are absolutely to be admired: the Dance Macabre and the Seven Deadly Sins will leave you speechless!

Surrounded by a thick chestnut grove, once considered the kingdom of the Marian fairies, Strembo has its roots far back in time. Towards the valley, Strembo is lapped by the course of the Sarca River, in whose bend the river park has risen, which, together with the recreational area, forms a large area dedicated to relaxation. The town was also the birthplace of some of the people who started the tourist development of Val Rendena, including Giovanbattista Righi, father of Madonna di Campiglio, and Luigi Fantoma, king of Val Genova, who accompanied the explorers to the conquest of Adamello.

From Stembo you can access the long Val Genova, also known as the “Valley of Falls”. The most famous is the Nardis waterfall, one of the highest in  Trentino , formed by the Nardis torrent that descends from Presanella on the northern side of the valley.

The other waterfalls are the Lares (high and low), Folgorida, Casöl (Casina Muta), Pedrùc, Stablèi, Pont delle Cambiali and Mandron. In addition to the waterfalls, Val Genova is full of corners to be discovered, with some of the most beautiful landscapes in the area. Alpine huts, farmsteads and refuges dot this green wonder. Not to be missed!

In the shadow of Mount Toff, Bocenago is the town that most of all has preserved the typical rural architecture of its buildings, very original and linked to the forestry and pastoral economy. The buildings are characterized by sturdy masonry bases of rectangular shape, where there was space for the hearth and the stable, surmounted by light wooden structures.

The portals are rigorously made of granite and the wide facades face original balconies. The center of the village is indicated by an original fountain composed of two large boulders, one of granite to symbolize the Adamello and one of dolomite to recall the Brenta Dolomites. Walking through the village, then, you can experience the atmosphere of the past and notice the will of the inhabitants to remember a past rich in history, traditions, culture, combining it with the evolution of time.

In Bocenago you can have fun playing some golf in the Golf Club Val Rendena, which covers an area of 125,000 square meters.

MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO

Campiglio is a hamlet of Pinzolo, but it is the best-known place in the whole Val Rendena. Elegant and modern center, it is located at 1,550 meters above sea level, today is certainly the number one among the Italian ski resorts and one of the most important in the entire Alpine arc.

Every December it hosts the Ski World Cup stage, where the village lights up with exclusive parties and events. On the legendary “3Tre”, the slope of the great competitions, you can see the biggest skiers in the world compete!

However, if worldliness is not what you are looking for, do not worry: Campiglio is a great destination to practice many sports in all seasons in peace!

In this regard, we recommend you to discover Madonna di Campiglio also in summer: a trip to the beautiful Nambino Lake is definitely worth it! The path is easy to walk, not particularly difficult and offers one of the most beautiful corners of this valley. Once at the Lago Nambino Refuge you can walk around the circumference of the lake: easy, fast, and suitable for families!

If golf is your passion, then you cannot miss the opportunity to play on the highest golf course in Europe: Carlo Magno Golf Course, right near the pass is a golf course built with the help of the famous player Henry Cotton. A unique setting where you can practice this fascinating sport!

CURIOSITIES

A path winds for almost 100 km between Madonna di Campiglio and Trento and follows the path that San Vigilio made in 405 A.D. during his work of evangelization of the valley. The itinerary is made up of a series of ancient paths recovered and arranged by the SAT (the Society of Tridentine Mountaineers) and marked with red and white signs. It crosses many villages and meets several small churches and religious buildings linked to the Saint.

HOTELS SELECTED BY PASSIONE DOLOMITI

Biohotel hermitage, fogajard lovely chalet, winter activities.

Surrounded by a landscape of singular beauty given by the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello-Brenta Group, Val Rendena is a snow sports paradise.

The upper part of the valley, with numerous slopes, one of which is a World Cup slope, is the temple of skiing!

Trekking or snowshoeing to isolated mountain pastures, cross-country trails or trails, ice-skating, ski touring and climbing icefalls complete the offer of this valley.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Let us start with two wheels: Val Rendena is crossed by about 30 km of cycle path that connect Madonna di Campiglio to Villa Rendena. Flat stretches alternate with short difficulties along the banks of the Sarca River. Suitable for families, it offers a pleasant ride in the open air, to be spent in complete tranquility and without too much effort.

If water is your element, then go in search of the numerous waterfalls that are present in this valley: from those of Vallesinella to those of Val Genova. Or the lakes, present in this valley as in no other area of the Adamello-Brenta Park: Lake Nambino, or Lake Ritorto (connected by the famous 5 lakes path, which also reaches Lake Serodoli, Lake Nero, Lake Lambin), Lake Malghette, Lakes Cornisello, Lakes San Giuliano and Lake Valagola.

Immerse yourself in nature will be a real pleasure, perhaps accompanied by a horse. A couple of stables in the valley can make this idyllic picture. Not to mention the over 450 kilometres of hiking trails, superb via ferrata routes and mountain bike trails.

Finally, there are two golf courses: the Rendena Golf Club and the Charlemagne Golf Course.

SKIING & HIKING AREAS

Ski area campiglio dolomiti di brenta.

There is not much to say about this ski area, the numbers speak for themselves: with 156 kilometers of slopes, 58 lifts and as many as 108 slopes, it is the largest ski area in Trentino. With a single ski pass, you can ski from Pinzolo to Val di Sole in Folgarida and Marilleva. Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio have 64 slopes, including the unmissable “Dolomitica” and “3tre”, the latter run by the greatest ski champions. Always attentive to the offer also for the youngest skiers, in this area there is also a snow park and a toboggan run.

In summer the Brenta Dolomites are the perfect place for your trekking: in the Grostè area, between Campiglio and Campo Carlo Magno, you can discover a world that we would define “lunar”: the rock is grey and almost white scratched and if you like the genre we suggest you to plan some paths here, considering to stay overnight in some refuge.

If you are looking for more challenging adventures, we reveal that the Brenta Group has one of the most complete and articulated vie ferrate systems in the Alps: the Via delle Bocchette. This large “network” of equipped trails, which covers the entire massif, along slender aerial ledges, allows even non-mountaineers to experience the mountains, getting to know some of the most exciting alpine landscapes “from the inside”.

Have you ever thought about… sleeping on a farm? The farmsteads are rural dwellings typical of Trentino-Alto Adige. Originally, they were a cattle shelter, a stable with an adjoining space where you could prepare cheese and cook. They were inhabited only seasonally and served as a shelter for livestock. Nowadays many farmsteads have been restored maintaining the original structure and have become the rooms of widespread hotels. All or almost all made of wood, they are warm, cozy and are another way to experience the mountains at first hand. Ask your local APT to book one!

NATURAL PARKS

Adamello-Brenta Natural Park

The Park, located west of Trento, along the border with Lombardy, occupies a tenth of the surface of Trentino. Born in 1967, the Park offers many views of rare beauty. From Lake Tovel, which was once colored red and where there is a visitor center, to Val Genova, which with its countless waterfalls has been called the “Versailles of the Alps”. From the crystal, clear springs of Vallesinella to the views of the Cornisello lakes, at the foot of Presanella (3558 m.), with its “fiery” sunsets over the Dolomites. From the fossils of Val d’Ambiez to the mushrooms of Val Daone. An excellent network of paths allows you to visit the valleys and to climb (sometimes also by cable car) to the alpine refuges to taste traditional dishes.

The exceptional environmental conformation of the Park’s territory favors extraordinary wildlife presences that include, among others, rare and exclusive species.

So be careful not to get too far into too lonely situations: the brown bear shy and lonely carnivore is among them. Moreover, the fox, cunning predator, and five species of mustelids (badger, marten, weasel, marten and ermine).

On the prairies at high altitudes, there are numerous herds of alpine chamois; in those in the valley deer and roe deer find their best habitat. Recent reappearance in high altitude areas is the ibex, reintroduced thanks to a project implemented by the Park in collaboration with the neighboring Lombard Park.

In order to have a complete view of the animal population, mouflons and numerous rodents and insectivores (squirrels, shrews, and marmots) should be mentioned.

Equally rich and interesting is the avifauna, among which the mimetic francolino, the capercaillie and the ptarmigan are worth mentioning. Last but not least, but not least, the diurnal birds of prey (including the golden eagle and hawk, the golden and common owl, the owl and the axial owl), the reptiles and the numerous species of fish from the Alpine lakes.

About a third of the Park’s surface is covered by woods, which in the lower part are mostly broadleaf trees. For example, maple, cornel, rowan, rowan, hazel, willow, hornbeam, downy oak, and ornamental ash. In the mountain plain, on the other hand, there are beech woods and mixed deciduous and coniferous woods. The latter are often prevalent because they were favored in the past by silviculture. Where this has not happened, the pure beech woodland has been able to develop freely (Val Genova and Giudicarie esteriori). Spruce trees and larches cover the higher altitude ranges.

Panoramic views, walks, skiing and villages

Val Rendena , in Trentino , offers not only famous resorts like Madonna di Campiglio , but also lesser-known treasures.

The church of San Vigilio in Pinzolo , located at an altitude of 774 metres, boasts Simone Baschenis’s magnificent fresco of the Dance of Death . From here, you can take a cable car to one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Brenta Dolomites: the Doss del Sabion , with 150 kilometres of ski slopes and a network of paths to hike in summer, stopping at the mountain huts to taste the local cheeses.

In Val Genova, near Pinzolo, we recommend visiting the Nardis Waterfalls . In Carisolo, don’t miss the beautifully frescoed church of Santo Stefano , while in Caderzone you can discover alpine life at the Malga Museum and relax at the Sant’Antonio spring thermal baths . In Strembo, you can walk the Salagadart hiking route , which combines landscapes, literature and art. If you prefer to ride a mountain or electric bike, you can take the cycle-pedestrian path along the Sarca river .

There are also plenty of events and entertainment for all tastes. Every summer, Trentino hosts the high-altitude “The Sounds of the Dolomites” music festival , which ranges from classical music to jazz.

The most beautiful villages in Val Rendena and Trentino

The most beautiful villages in Val Rendena and Trentino

For those who love mountain villages.

The most beautiful villages in Val Rendena and Trentino

Cristina & Fausto

For those who love the  mountain villages , the Rendena and the Giudicarie valleys in  Trentino  are real hidden gems, with unforgettable landscapes and some of the most beautiful villages in Italy. These alpine villages preserve the  stories, secrets and memories  of those who lived in these fascinating and uncontaminated places in the past.

Rango in Bleggio and San Lorenzo in Banale are known as two among the most beautiful villages in Italy – make sure you visit them during your time in Val Rendena and Trentino!

Rango nel Bleggio: famous markets and rural atmosphere

The ancient village of  Rango  is inhabited by about 120 people, and it is called‘the village where time has stopped.’ It is a place to discover on foot, wandering around the historic centre among ancient houses. Nature lovers can also choose to follow one of the various thematic trails, such as the Art, History, Nature and Faith Paths.

Moreover, children will also enjoy taking part in educational tours discovering rural areas, with the chance to taste traditional local products. During the month of  December , this small village hosts a beautiful  Christmas Market , giving the chance to associations, farmers, artisans and small local companies to bring the  ancient courtyards  and houses back to life. In this market you will find zero-kilometer products, ancient machinery used in the countryside, toys from a bygone time and of course nativity scenes.

San Lorenzo in Banale: a ‘widespread’ village near Comano

This enchanted village is located  near the Comano thermal baths , and it is a treasure trove of culture, art and tradition. It’s the ideal place to visit to relax between a hike in the mountains and activities like mountain biking and trekking.

Things to see include the Casa del Parco called ‘C’era una Volta’, an eighteenth-century building where you can visit an ancient country house and relive the traditions of the past. You can also see Casa Mazoleti, Casa Moscati and Casa Martignoni, the  old houses of the village , surrounded by alleyways, vegetable gardens, sculptures and balconies full of red geraniums. Art lovers should not miss visiting the Church of San Rocco and San Sebastiano, where 16th century frescoes by Baschenis can be seen.

Rural villages in Val Rendena

Val Rendena  is surrounded by the  Adamello Brenta Nature Park , where it is possible to enjoy trekking and mountain biking, as well as to fully experience nature with woods and flower-filled meadows surrounded by the perennial glaciers of  Presanella and Adamello , and the rock spires of the Brenta Dolomites. The villages of Spiazzo, Strembo, Bocenago, Caderzone, Giustino, Pinzolo and Carisolo are all immersed in this wonder. They are all worth a visit!

If you don’t have much time we will share you 3 not-to-be-missed sights: the ancient Church of San Vigilio decorated with the Danse Macabre painted by Baschenis, Caderzone Terme and the healing properties of its waters, and the Festival of ancient crafts in Bocenago every August 15th.

Cyclists on the Val Rendena ciclopedonale

Cyclists on the Val Rendena ciclopedonale

A beautiful cycleway that follows the Sarca river as it flows through the Val Rendena between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello group. The core of the cycleway runs between Carisolo and Tione di Trento, but you can start at Sant’Antonio di Mavignola, or continue on to Ragoli.

At a glance

28 kilometres

Difficulty/terrain

Easy — almost entirely downhill or flat.

Almost completely traffic-free except for very short sections through a couple of villages.

The whole route is on paved cycleways or roads.

Signposting

Well signposted.

Public transport

The central section of the route is supported by a  bicibus service, and, in addition, there are bicibus services connecting the route with Dimaro in the Val di Sole, and with Riva del Garda and Torbole.

Distance : this guide isn’t divided into daily stages, as people differ in how fast and how far they want to travel each day.

‘Traffic-free’ : many cycle routes include sections with roads with restricted access for residents or people working on the adjoining land. You may, very occasionally, encounter an agricultural vehicle like a tractor pulling a trailer of hay, but most of the time there is no motorised traffic. They are often indistinguishable from the cycleways that are legally set aside for the exclusive use of cyclists and pedestrians.

About this table

The table doesn’t necessarily show the distances from one city centre to the centre of the next town — if a route skirts around a town the distances are measured to the nearest point on the route from the centre.

Getting there and back

There’s no railway line on the cycleway, but there is a station at Dimaro in the neighbouring Val di Sole. There is a  bicibus service that runs between Dimaro and Carisolo via Madonna di Campiglio. The service operates between mid-June and mid-September with four buses a day in either direction every day.

There’s another bike-bus to take you back to Carisolo from Tione di Trento (it also stops at other places along the route). There are five buses a day in each direction. You could then take a bus from Carisolo to Dimaro.

There are also bicibus services which should enable you to get from Torbole or Riva del Garda to Carisolo in a couple of hours. Although, rather than trying to do the cycleway as a day-trip, the best option might be to base yourself in the the area for a couple of nights, possibly making use of the bicibus to ride the Val di Sole cycleway ( italy-cycling-guide.info: Val di Sole cycleway ).

Bridge on the Val Rendena cycleway near Pinzolo

Bridge on the Val Rendena cycleway near Pinzolo

The Val Rendena cycleway has three main sections. The first is a steepish descent from Sant’Antonio di Mavignola to Carisolo and Pinzolo. The second runs between Carisolo/Pinzolo and Tione di Trento, and the third between Tione di Trento and the Lago di Ponte Pio.

The 16-kilometre middle section between Carisolo/Pinzolo and Tione di Trento links the main towns and is the core of the route, and is supported by a  bicibus service. The first and third sections are well worth doing, but a little more off the beaten track.

You can ride the ciclabile in either direction, but the climb from Carisolo to Sant’Antonio di Mavignola involves a four-kilometre climb with a gradient of a bit over 7 per cent (an altitude gain of 288m). There’s a gondola lift between Pinzolo-Campiglio Express gondola lift, but it’s a relatively expensive option as it looks like you have to buy a two-hour bike pass (18€). The road from Madonna di Campiglio isn’t especially busy and offers some cracking views of the Brenta Dolomites, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re nervous in traffic.

There are several points where there are branches off the main cycleway, but the main variant is to the north of Carisolo where there are two branches: one goes via the little church of Santo Stefano and then crosses the river Sarca and follows the right bank (looking in the direction the river flows). The other branch follows the left bank, before it too crosses the river, and the two branches join.

Connections

The Val Rendena cycleway forms part of the DolomitiBrentaBike mountain bike route. You can continue following the DolomitiBrentaBike to Dimaro, or in the other direction, towards the Lago di Molveno.

If you are staying in the area, you could make use of the bike-bus service to Dimaro to ride the Val di Sole cycleway. You could also do a side-trip into the Parco dell’Adamello Brenta along the beautiful Val Genova is well worth the time. The road into the Val Genova continues for 16 kilometres but only part of it is asphalt surfaced (at least 6 kilometres and probably more).

You could also use the cycleway as part of a longer road itinerary, for example:

  • continue on from Tione di Trento to pick up the Valle del Chiese cycleway to the Lago d’Idro and then from there take the Valle del Ledro cycleway before descending to the Lago di Garda via the Strada del Ponale;
  • or continue to Comano Terme and then return to Riva del Garda via the Lago di Tenno, or the Sarca and Giudicarie cycleway back to Arco and Torbole on the lake.

What to see along the way

Probably the star sights along the way are the churches of Santo Stefano near Carisolo, and San Vigilio in Pinzolo.

The churches were decorated with frescos by Simone Baschenis and other members of the Baschenis family — a family of painters who lived in Lombardia but also worked in this valley and the neighbouring Val di Sole. Their work spans several generations and a couple of centuries. You can see you can see other examples of the Baschenis’ work in chapels at Sant’Antonio di Mavignola, Pelugo and Ragoli.

In more detail

Sant’antonio di mavignola to pinzolo and carisolo.

The route starts from the centre of Sant’Antonio di Mavignola in front of the tiny Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate (definitely take a look inside the little chapel if it’s open).

If you are coming from the Madonna di Campiglio turn right: there are two roads you can take, and both lead to the same place. The first turning is just before the sign indicating that you are leaving the village, and, if you miss the first turning, the second one is immediately after the sign.

You need to take the Vecchia Strada (old road) also shown on the maps as the Via Folgarida. The only sign is an MTB route sign for the Vecchia Strada (MTB 960 – Trail Vecchia Strada).

The Vecchia Strada was built in the nineteenth century by the owner of a hotel in Madonna di Campiglio, as the first step in turning an abandoned monastery into a successful summer resort popular with the nobility of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The road became the old road with the building of the modern strada statale that made it possible to reach Madonna di Campiglio in winter as well as summer.

You can see why the road was impracticable in winter: it’s pretty steep in places. The surface is generally pretty good, but there are a couple of rough spots to watch out for, as well as two or three drainage channels.

After 2.7 kilometres (according to the sign at the bottom) the road comes out onto a bridge over a river, turn right heading for Carisolo. On the way to Carisolo, and neighbouring Pinzolo, you pass the Birrificio Val Rendena brewery.

A little after the birrificio you come to a junction with the start of a branch of the cycleway on your right-hand side. This is the start of the branch of the cycleway that follows the left bank of the river. There’s another branch of the cycleway on the other bank; the two meet at a bridge a little way after Pinzolo.

If you want to go to Carisolo, it’s better to stay on the road and then turn right at the next junction (by the Hotel Edelweiss). If you want to go to Pinzolo, then you should stay on the road and then turn left.

You have several options here depending on whether you want to visit the church of Santo Stefano near Carisolo, or the church of San Vigilio in Pinzolo. (Or both. Or neither).

Carisolo and the church of Santo Stefano

To reach the church of Santo Stefano, you need to head through the centre of Carisolo, to the Piazza II Maggio. Look for the (brown) signs for the Chiesa di Santo Stefano and the Località Antica Vetreria (glassworks). Keep following the Via Negrelli (and the signs) as it leads out of town. Turn right when you get to the Via Santo Stefano and follow it as it heads uphill, leading you to the church. The road has been tarmacked for most of the way, but as you get near to the church, the tarmac gives way to stone setts (paving blocks).

The Chiesa di Santo Stefano is high up on the valley side, in the sort of location that has probably been a sacred place for thousands and thousands of years. Inside the church, there are a couple of fabulous frescoes by members of the Baschenis. The first fresco, by Antonio Baschenis, depicts the Last Supper — look for the river shrimps on the table. The other fresco, by Simone II Baschenis, shows the passage of Charlemagne (Carlo Magno) as he came through the area (his army is said to have camped at the Campo Carlo Magno on the way from the Val di Sole into the Val Rendena).

During the peak summer months the little church is opened up by volunteers (see visittrentino.it for opening times, or ask at the helpful tourist office). If you’re planning on visiting the church it’s definitely worth downloading the sections of the audioguide (see the resources section later on).

Once you’ve visited the church, you can then pick up a branch of the cycleway on the right bank of the river: return down the Via Santo Stefano, and then, when you come to the junction with the Via Negrelli, turn right and head for the Antica Vetreria. After the Antica Vetreria, the road leads to the river and the cycleway on the other side.

The cycleway on the right bank bypasses Pinzolo. If you also want to visit the church of San Vigilio, then the best option is to return the way you came and then go into Pinzolo.

The Chiesa di San Vigilio in Pinzolo is best known for the danza macabra painted by Simone II Baschenis on the exterior wall of the church. A  danza macabra ( danse macabre or Dance of Death) is a mural showing the great and the good of the Middle Ages in a dance with skeletal figures. There are a small number of these scattered across Europe — see en.wikipedia.org: Danse Macabre ). The danza macabara in Pinzolo has been beautifully restored and is well worth the detour.

If the church is open, don’t miss the opportunity to see the frescos, by various members of the Baschenis family, inside. The church is only open during the summer months (June to September). It should be open in the mornings, and in July and August in the late afternoons (check opening times with the tourist office or the tourist information website campigliodolomiti.it: chiese in Val Rendena )

Once you’ve visited the church of San Vigilio, the easiest option is again to return here and take the cycleway on the left bank. You could join the cycleway at the next bridge downriver, but the access is by steps, so this is the most convenient joining point.

Pinzolo to Spiazzo

The left bank branch of the cycleway continues from its starting point just after the birrificio , skirting round Pinzolo, to a big playground, a  pineta (pine wood), and a timber bridge with a roof of wooden shingles, where you cross over the river.

The cycleway skirts around Caderzone Terme, passing a golf course. As you approach Strembo, there is a little park (the Parco Crosetta) with a play area and a  bicigrill . There is a short break in the traffic-free cycleway as the cycle route goes past the town’s recycling point, and the cycleway restarts again at a roundabout on the corner with a beautiful marble drinking water fountain.

After another couple of kilometres further on (at the 7-kilometre point) you cross back over the river and turn right. The next village is Spiazzo. As you approach Spiazzo, there’s the Bar Minigolf which has a workstation with an e-bike charging point as well as a pump and set of tools. There’s also a cool-looking play area a little further on.

Spiazzo to Vigo Rendena

At Spiazzo the traffic-free cycleway gives way to a stretch of very peaceful road that takes you through the neighbouring village of Fisto. Look out for the garden on your right-hand side with an extraordinary collection of old saucepans and old toys.

Artwork by the Val Rendena cycleway near Fisto

Artwork by the Val Rendena cycleway near Fisto

The road takes you past the 8-kilometre marker and into the centre of the village where turn right by the water fountain. The dedicated cycleway resumes near Ches, after a bit under a kilometre. Turn off to the right going downhill again towards the river. Look out for the sign for Tione di Trento on the right-hand side (as well as a sign for the Bicigrill Vigo).

The cycleway follows the left bank of the river, and then, after 1.4 kilometres, you come to another bridge where you cross back over to the right bank (although you could also continue on the left bank until the next bridge).

On the other side of the bridge (at the ten-kilometre point) there’s another play area, as well as a  bar-ristorante (the Biergarten Parco Masere). Bear left and cross over another bridge, following the signs for Tione di Trento.

The cycleway continues following the river, passing Vigo Rendena and Darè. Just after the 11-kilometre marker, you pass the Bicigrill di Vigo Rendena on your right-hand side. A little further on there’s the Camping Val Rendena, and just beside it the Ristorante-Pizzeria Le Fontane. There’s also a play area with a picnic area equipped with barbecues.

From here the cycleway passes Javrè and Villa Rendena.

Vigo di Rendena to Tione di Trento

A little after the 12-kilometre marker, you come out onto a road where you turn left, and then when the road forks, bear left (the road to the right leads to Javrè). The route takes you past a  magazzino (Council depot) and then there is a short climb to a little chapel where you turn left, onto another section of traffic-free cycleway.

The cycleway heads downhill towards the river, and then there’s a short, but pretty sharp climb (signed as 15%) before you cross over a local road (the SP34). The route keeps on climbing to the main road (average gradient a little over 5 per cent) for a bit under 400 metres.

Bridge on the Val Rendena cycleway near Verdesina

Bridge on the Val Rendena cycleway near Verdesina

Turn left at the road and follow the cycleway as it runs beside it for a brief stretch before heading back downhill towards a modern white bridge over the river at the 15-kilometre marker point.

After the bridge, the cycleway comes out beside the SP34 again and runs beside it for a short stretch towards Tione di Trento.

The cycleway brings you to a pedestrian crossing leading to a play area and sports ground on the other side of the road. The next stretch of cycleway takes you to Ragoli, 5.5 kilometres away. It begins almost directly after the sports ground on the other side of the road. Cross over the road and continue straight on with the sports ground on your left-hand side.

If you’re heading for Tione, you need to follow the SP34 as if crosses back over the river and takes you into the village. On the other side of the bridge, on your right-hand side, there’s a short footpath that takes you to the little Chiesa di San Vigilio.

The chiesa di San Vigilio in Tione di Trento

The chiesa di San Vigilio in Tione di Trento

Tione di Trento to Ragoli

The Val Rendena cycleway continues from Tione di Trento, following the left bank of the Sarca. It is virtually flat, with the very slightest of downhill gradients. It skirts around Preore and Ragoli.

There’s another Baschenis church (the Chiesa di Santi Faustino e Giovita) between the two villages. The well-preserved (and beautifully-restored) frescos on the vaulted ceiling of the little church were painted in the 1500s by Cristoforo Baschenis assisted by his young son Simone. I haven’t been able to find any information about whether the church is open to visitors, but you can, of course, look through the windows.

To get to the church, bear left when you come to a fork in the cycleway, and take the branch that leads toward Ragoli. When you come to a junction turn right and then right again onto the Via Marconi which takes you to a roundabout and to the church.

Bridge on the ciclovia Val Rendena (Trentino)

The other branch of the cycleway continues for a kilometre and a half before coming to an end a little after Ragoli. You can continue following the SP34 as it leads to Stenico, and on from there to Ponte Arche. If you’re thinking about using the cycleway as part of a longer route you could head from Ponte Arche towards Villa Banale and the Lago di Molveno, or you could head south and pick up the Giudicarie and Sarca cycleways which take you most of the way to the Lago di Garda. About these links

If you use these links to book accommodation Booking.com will pay me a small part of their commission. This helps support the costs of producing this site.

I use Booking.com to find and book places to stay when there are no campsites in the area. The large majority of hotels and many hostels are now on ‘Booking’. I like it because it means that I can get almost-instant confirmation. The rating system is also a reliable guide to the quality of the accommodation.

I’ve never had a problem finding places to keep my bike —even if it’s a cupboard or store room. I always use the ‘special requests’ field on the booking form to tell the hotel that I’m travelling with a bike, which gives them the opportunity to let me know if there’s a problem.

Many properties offer free cancellation but it’s a good idea to check the conditions as these vary from property to property.

There are no hostels on this route. The closest are the Active Hostel at Ponte del Caffaro, on the Lago d’Idro, and the Ostello Benacus at Riva del Garda.

There are a couple of campsites in the valley: the Camping Parco Adamello at Carisolo, and the Camping Val Rendena at Darè.

Places to eat and drink

You are never very far from a village, but there’s only a limited number of places to eat and drink that are directly on the route (distances are from Sant’Antonio di Mavignola):

  • Caderzone Terme (kilometre 10 ): Bicigrill Parco Crosetta
  • Spiazzo (kilometre 13): Bar Minigolf Spiazzo
  • Pelugo (kilometre 15): Biergarten Parco Masere
  • Vigo Rendena (kilometre 17): Bicigrill Vigo

There’s also a bar (Bar Arno) a short distance off the route at Tione di Trento. The Ristorante-Pizzeria Le Fontane a short distance further on from the Bicigrill Le Fontane is the most convenient place for a lunch stop (and it’s good).

I would highly recommend the Baita Magnabò near Carisolo for good local cooking, but it’s more of a place for a proper sit-down lunch or dinner rather than a lunch-stop. It’s also very popular and busy.

Guest Cards

If you’re spending time in the region, it’s worth checking out the Trentino Guest Card . The major benefits for cyclists are free use of the train and bicibus services, as well as free entry to many museums and other attractions.

The card is available from participating accommodation providers (including hostels and campsites). For a list see: visittrentino.info: Guest Card: participating accommodation providers . You need to be staying for a minimum of two nights — but the website also suggests that you ask about the card even if you are only staying for a single night, as you can buy it for a  very special price . If you’re planning on doing a lot of sightseeing, you can also buy the card for 40€ for a week.

There’s a pdf map/brochure if you want to find out more. There’s also an app for Android/iOS.

Most of the holiday areas in the region have a local Guest Card that offers similar benefits.

There’s a  bicibus service that runs between Dimaro and Carisolo via Madonna di Campiglio. The service operates between mid-June and mid-September with four buses a day in either direction every day.

At Dimaro there are train services via Mostizzolo to Trento.

About the maps

The maps are in two versions: A4 portrait format - for printing and maybe also for viewing on an iPad, and A5 for smaller tablets and smartphones. (A4 and A5 are international paper sizes).

  •  Val Rendena cycleway gps files (.zip file containing 7 gpx files)

About POIs

POIs are like waypoints, but while you can usually only store a limited number of waypoints on a device, you can store thousands of POIs. These files include information about campsites and hostels, bike shops, train stations, drinking water sources as well as warnings for tunnels and roads where bikes are banned. Please check the ReadMe file for instructions. Updated April 2018. The file format is only compatible with Garmin GPSes .

GPX? POI? WTF? … about the GPS files

The GPS downloads are zip files containing files with tracks and waypoints. You can use these with a GPS (eg a Garmin), or using an app on a smartphone or tablet. Depending on the software you use, the track files will display the route on a map, and let you view an altitude profile. The waypoint files show the location of places of interest, as well as other useful things like drinking water sources, train stations and campsites etc.

The track files will just display a line on a map; they won’t give you turn-by-turn directions.

The POI files will only work on Garmin GPSes. They work best on the handheld receivers (eg the eTrex family). They also work, but not as well, on the Edge cycling GPSes.

Lodge Camping Val Rendena

Rely on us and take your time.

Enjoy a few days of relaxation in the company of our family in Porte di Rendena, a stone's throw from the Sarca River and the bike path immersed in the ADAMELLO BRENTA NATURE PARK. We are Alessia, Alessandro, and Agostino Azzalini, and we have been working for years to improve the facility's services and make our guests feel at home. In addition to the pitches, which are served by two service blocks, Camping Val Rendena offers apartments and mobile homes, each with its own set of services.

We are a big family that can accommodate those who enjoy trekking in the Dolomites, biking, or sport fishing, as well as families with children who want to be safe while having fun in nature.

Our campground does not provide entertainment, but it does provide plenty of space for children to play outdoors. Bicycle rides, ball games, a well-equipped playground, a swimming pool, trips to our pond and along the Sarca River... these are just a few of the many activities that children will be able to enjoy with us in complete freedom and safety.

You can find constructivism in architecture, the most striking manifestation of Russian avant-garde, not far from the Arbat Street. The Soviet Empire style can be found on most of the Moscow central avenues and Tverskaya Street. The White Square Business District is a remarkable example of contemporary city building.

10. MOSCOW REGION

Sergiev Posad

Sergiev-Posad Museum-Reserve

If Moscow is not enough for you, take a journey (of several hundred km from Moscow) and find yourself travelling through the «Golden Ring» of Russia. The Golden Ring is a name for several towns located around Moscow: Suzdal, Rostov, Vladimir are among them. If you want to know more about Russia, see old architecture, churches made of white stone, hear the bell-ring, see old fortifications, be ready to go out from Moscow. The first town of the Golden Ring, is Vladimir, located 179 kilometers to the east from Moscow with 378 thousand people living there. It is an old Russian town, it used to be the capital of Russia in the 12th century. Suzdal is located nearby. It’s an old town, steeped in medieval history, but with little more than 10,000 residents nowadays. Dating back to 990 AD, Suzdal is one of the oldest towns in Russia and the «jewel» of Russia’s history. Today the town is filled with busy churches and monasteries and its streets are lined by colourful traditional wooden houses. Having survived the blight of Soviet town-planning, Suzdal looks much as it did centuries ago and is one of the most popular tourist sights in Russia. Yaroslavl got its name from Yaroslav Mudry, who founded the town in the beginning of 11th century. Now it is a large industrial city, the biggest along the Golden Ring (630 inhabitants), however it has very interesting history, architecture, and city life. If you are tired of sightseeing and want to have some rest from Moscow busy life, you can take a breath of wonderful Russian nature, not going too far, and visit one of the nature hotels and spa situated near Moscow. Places like «Fox Lodge», «Zavidovo» or «Yahonty» are a good variant for relaxing rest, with marvelous nature around you and interesting entertainments for you not to get bored.

Revitalisation and the great outdoors, at the feet of the Brenta Dolomites

  • Iron-rich water from the Sant’Antonio spring
  • Wellness programmes in the Adamello-Brenta Park
  • Surrounded by the beauty of the Brenta Dolomites

Just a few kilometres from Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio is the Borgo Salute (or “Village of Health”) at the Terme Val Rendena spa, housed in historic buildings that reflect the beauty of the Brenta Dolomites .

The iron-rich water with its low mineral content comes from the Sant’Antonio spring, and is used at the Terme Val Rendena spa as a respiratory and vascular cure. The water can be taken as a drink or in an aerosol, or used in baths and hot tubs.

The Borgo Salute at Terme Val Rendena organises activities in the open spaces of the Adamello-Brenta Park as part of the ‘ Dolomiti Natural Wellness’ programme . The exercises are designed around movement, breathing and meditation, and consist of barefoot trails, tree-hugging, and natural Kneipp walking in the waters of the Sarca river.

The Borgo Salute offers a relaxing and detoxing spa experience with saunas, a Turkish bath and a swimming pool, as well as a wide range of fitness packages and treatments. The ‘Thermae Veritas’ line of cosmetics, including products for the face, body and hair, means you can continue to enjoy the benefits of the cure even at home.
