A destination sure to blow through all expectations, there are tons of unique things to do in Gulf Shores (and surrounding beautiful areas). The Alabama beaches are definitely a holiday destination, with plenty of infrastructure to cater to the standard vacationers. But there’s SO much beyond that if you care to take a look.

Gulf Shores + Orange Beach encompass so many different areas and landscapes, from beaches, bays, and bayous to forests, state parks, and coves. If you look beyond the main spots, you will find fascinating art, hidden gem views, adventure sports, some of the freshest food, and so much more!

Below are some of the most cool, unexpected, unusual, or unique things to do in the area. How many will you tick off?

Unique Things to Do in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Have you heard of all these unique Gulf Shores activities?

Bamahenge is, as its name suggests, an Alabama version of Stonehenge. For me, this was one of the most unexpected things to do in Gulf Shores! It’s a true, life-size replica of Stonehenge made out of fiberglass and set in a calm clearing in a beautiful forest north of Orange Beach.

The best part is the initial intrigue – it definitely makes you wonder who thought of this idea, and why they wanted to place it here. It’s quite remote compared to the rest of the Alabama beaches, and is a fun road trip stop in a big block of land in Elberta with many other unique things to do in the area.

Grab your camera (or your drone) and get more up close and personal with Stonehenge than you ever could with the real thing!

Dinosaurs in the Woods + Lady in the Marina

These are some more cool things to see in the same area as Bamahenge. The Dinosaurs in the woods are a popular attraction as there are four massive fiberglass dinosaurs hidden at different points in the woods – some more difficult to find than others.

The Lady in the Marina is another totally unique sculpture of the area that is really a sight to behold. It’s a massive sculpture of a woman’s head and knees set to look like she’s bathing in the Barber Marina. All of the sculptures were made by the same artist, Mark Cline, for the landowner of the area and marina.

Before leaving the area, you can also look for the Roman Columns and the Knights in the woods! It’s like one big scavenger hunt that’s tons of fun for everyone.

If you’re looking for the most unique thrill/adventure around Gulf Shores, look no further than Orange Beach Cat Boat Tours. These mini cat boats are made with two small barges, two comfy seats, a shade, and hand controls to accelerate and turn.

I will undoubtedly tell you this is THE MOST fun way to explore the beaches, bays, and bayous of the Alabama beaches while also being able to shoot photos, sip drinks, and learn about the area from an experienced guide.

Once you leave the ‘no wake’ zone, you can zoom all around the area, finding dolphins and shipwrecks and marveling at beautiful houses. Go with a guide if you want to get the lay of the land, or just rent one and explore on your own!

Jurassic Golf – 3D, Blacklight, Glow in the Dark, Dinosaur-Themed Mini Golf

Yes, you read that correctly! Gulf Shores’ newest attraction is the most unique mini golf course I have ever seen. Yes, it really is 3D and really glows in the dark. Leave your 3D glasses on the entire time if you dare (well, take them off if you feel sick because apparently that can happen – that’s how good the art is)!

There are multiple rooms full of life-size, glowing dinosaurs and realistic paintings on the walls. It’s a perfect rainy day activity or way to end a night and surely one of the most unique things to do in Gulf Shores.

Try an eFoil Lesson (and Get Hooked)

If you haven’t heard of an eFoil, maybe it’s time to find out. These self-propelled surfboards are not easy to master, but once you can get up, you feel like you’re on a real-life magic carpet. If you have done board sports before, you should be able to stand up within an hour of your first lesson at Foil Gulf Coast !

I cannot even describe how much fun it is to whiz around the calm bays of the Alabama Beaches using a remote control, trying to master the weight distribution on the board so the foil will lift up a few feet in the air.

These eFoils are also an awesome mode of transport around the area, but of course require that you don’t bring anything else along. I recommend doing a lesson if you haven’t tried it yet- it’s the thrill of a lifetime!

Rent a Bike and Explore Gulf State Park

Gulf Shores has the absolutely amazing and, quite frankly, rare feature of having an entire protected State Park pretty much within the city center! Gulf State Park is 5 minutes from anywhere else in Gulf Shores, but feels a thousand miles from anything with its incredible views, wildlife, and hiking trails.

Make sure to check out Gulf State Park for a day in nature. Keep your eyes out for eagles and alligators, walk along the Shelby Lakes, or book one of the stunning Eagle Cottages in the state park, which are surely one of the most unique places to stay in the area (and come with bikes so you can have a morning ride to your delicious included breakfast).

Take a Clay Wheel Lesson at Orange Beach Coastal Arts Center

Looking for something even more unique to do around the Alabama Beaches? How does an art workshop sound? You can take a few different kinds of classes at the Orange Beach Coastal Arts Center (which is worth a visit whether you’re learning a skill or not).

The Clay Studio at the Arts Center is a shared space where locals become members and create/sculpt at the facility. You can sign up for an introductory class at the clay studio, where you get a quick crash course on using the clay wheel and can create your very own bowl (which they will ship to you).

OR Take a Glass Blowing Lesson

If clay isn’t your thing, maybe glass blowing might be more up your alley! Next to the Clay Studio is the Hot Shop, which also offers hour-long glass blowing classes where you can learn the ropes of creating glass yourself!

I did the clay class and loved it, but I recommend any classes at the arts center as they’re some of the most unique things to do in Gulf Shores or a fantastic date idea, too!

Visit FloraBama Bar

What’s more unique than having a drink and a dance right between two states?! FloraBama bar has been an iconic establishment in the area for many decades – since 1964, to be exact. Now located only in Florida (due to liquor laws), it actually used to be half in Alabama and half in Florida.

FloraBama has multiple rooms of live music, some with multiple levels. The decor is completely eclectic, and there’s hardly an empty space on the walls at all! This is the place that really popularized Bushwacker cocktails in the area, so those are a must-drink here.

Float between the 3-4 dance floors, the many bars, the pool room, and the beach on a night out here that you’re sure to remember.

Bushwackers are THE cocktail of the area, and each bar/restaurant has its own take on this creamy, boozy, and chocolatey blended drink. Here are some of the best places to enjoy a Bushwacker!

• Pirate’s Cove – there’s nothing like a Bushwacker at a boat-up bar on the beach. Enjoy in the daytime!
• Pink Pony Pub – Enjoy a Bushwacker here with amazing ocean views (which are pretty much everywhere in Gulf Shores).
• Tacky Jack’s – With a venue in Gulf Shores AND Orange Beach, Tacky Jacks has a deliciously strng bushwacker to enjoy with their delicious food (and a view).
• FloraBama – In my opinion, the best Bushwacker in the area comes from the place that popularized them, FloraBama.

Boat Up to Pirate’s Cove for some Pizza (and Petting Dogs)

Pirate’s Cove might be more well-known, but it’s still surely one of the most unique things to do in Gulf shores + the Alabama Beaches. This bar is surrounded by water on most sides, and is THE place to relax during the day.

Many people boat up (or take their eFoil!) to grab some food and drinks, swim, and enjoy the music. It’s also very dog-friendly with tons of pups running around prime for the petting!

Travel Back to the 50’s at Sunliner Diner

One of the most unique places to eat in Gulf Shores is surely the amazing Sunliner Diner! Many diners go for a 50’s vibe, but the Sunliner Diner takes it ALL the way with classic cars inside and outside, old school menus, costumed waiters/waitresses, old newspaper menus, and more!

It’s a whole experience to eat here, and their food is absolutely top-notch. Grab a frappe with whipped cream OR a breakfast cocktail, depending on your day’s plans, and some delicious sweet or savory breakfasts!

Experience Nearly 360 Degrees of Sea Views at Alabama Point

There are surely hundreds of miles of beaches all around Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and the area. But there’s no beach as unique as Alabama Point! It is located at the westernmost point of Perdido Key next to the Perdido Pass, which is how any watercraft would reach the Gulf from the protected bays of the Alabama beaches.

Alabama Point is a massive, sandy, sea-swept point completely surrounded by water! The currents can get strong here, so be careful if getting in the water, but the views are absolutely unbeatable.

Enjoy Margaritas at CoastAL for Sunset

One of the most unique beachfront venues to check out in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is called CoastAL. This massive open-air venue is centered around a courtyard that has live music on the daily. This is a great spot for a few sunset drinks (yes, the sun sets almost over the water at certain times of the year) or a delicious, high quality meal too.

CoastAL has direct beach access so you can have a quick sunset dip between sips of your cocktail. Sounds like a dream!

Try a Mimosa Flight and Benedict Trio at Ruby Slipper Cafe

If you want the most unique brunch on the Alabama Beaches, look no further than Ruby Slipper Cafe. They have plenty of brunch cocktails, but the most unique drink on the menu is definitely the mimosa flight, which comes with four different colors/flavors of mimosas.

Their breakfast and brunch items are all unbeatable, with a fantastic selection of everything. But the most unique item, in my opinion, is the ‘Benedict Trio’, which comes with THREE different types of their eggs benedicts on one plate. If you are like me and want to try everything, this is the move!

Dive for Your Own Oysters on a Navy Cove Oyster Farm Tour

In Gulf Shores, you can truly trace food back to the source – especially oysters! On the Fort Morgan Peninsula, Navy Cove Oyster Farm not only supplies much of the area with its oysters, but also offers tours where you can get in the water and flip cages yourself!

Doing a tour also enables you to understand how oyster farming works and why this location between the salty gulf and fresh waters of Mobile Bay is truly the perfect place to farm oysters! Learn more about Navy Cove here.

Visit Fort Morgan + State Historic Site

Visiting Fort Morgan is one of the most unique things to do in Gulf Shores. It’s one of the only war sites in the area and it’s an incredible one at that, with a massive star-shaped fortification and lots of history.

Built upon the site of another fort used in the War of 1812, Fort Morgan had the biggest role to play in the Civil War (in the battle of Mobile Bay in 1864) but was also used in the Spanish-American War, World War 1, and more. Today, you can visit many different batteries and beaches in the area… and stop at Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill on the way!

Jump on the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf at Sunset

The Wharf is a must-visit in the Gulf Shores – Orange Beach area, with the biggest selection of shops and restaurants around. But the most fun thing to do here? Why, ride the ferris wheel, of course! From the top of the ferris wheel, you can see all around the Alabama Beaches and the many waterways that make it unique.

Riding the ferris wheel is fun for couples, groups, OR families – I mean, who doesn’t love a good carnival ride?

Cruisin Tikis

Cruisin Tikis are a very unique way to drink on the water that are slowly taking parts of the US by storm, and there’s no better place to try it than the Alabama Beaches. These tiny floating tiki bars actually cruise around the bays of Orange Beach for a few hours with great tunes and even better vibes.

Get a Fully Loaded Milkshake the The Yard

When it’s time to satiate your sweet tooth, there’s no better place to go than The Yard milkshake bar. They serve the most perfectly instagrammable milkshakes in the world, full of different colors and flavors and piled high with whipped cream sprinkles, and so many other goodies.

The Hangout is maybe the MOST iconic establishment in Gulf Shores. Located centrally and right on the beach, this venue really has it all. They offer full concerts in the back terrace area with high-level speakers and production. They have great food and cocktails and an unbeatable ocean view!

When it gets later in the night, people are known to dance on tables at the Hangout – its absolutely encouraged!

Climb, Explore, Play, and Eat at Lulu’s

Lulu’s is another iconic establishment in Gulf Shores Owned by Jimmy Buffet’s sister, Lulu. This waterside restaurant is not only a restaurant – it also has arcades, a huge ropes course, an on-site beach, and great options for food ad drinks for all ages.

Eat Fresh Seafood at Cobalt The Restaurant

There’s amazing seafood available all around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach (and the whole Gulf Coast), but one of the best places we enjoyed is Cobalt the Restaurant. This is a great place for a more upscale dinner of crab legs, fresh fish, and over 5 different flavors of oysters! Deee-lish.

Rent Jet Skiis

There are truly infinite ways to explore the bays of Orange Beach, but jet skis are surely one of the most fun (and most classic) ways to explore. There are a few places to rent jet skis from, and there is no limit to the adventures you can have and the places you can visit on them. With no shortage of venues and bars you can boat up to, you can organize your own adventure!

Get Up Close and Personal at Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

The Gulf Coast Zoo is always a good idea in Gulf Shores. Here, there are large enclosures housing all kinds of animals (even a lemur enclosure you can go inside)!

Go Kayaking

There are a lot of ways to go kayaking in Gulf Shores- from kayak tours to dolphin tours to the most unique option: a paint and paddle kayak tour (which is offered weekly in the summer).

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail is extensive, with more than 200 miles of birding trail loops that are connected between Baldwin County and Mobile County in Alabama. Two of the most accessible trail loops in Gulf Shores are the Gulf Shores-Orange Beach Loop and the Fort Morgan Loop.

The Gulf Shores-Orange Beach Loop starts at the Perdido Pass bridge, where you can look for nesting snowy plovers and common loons that are often wading in the tides. On this loop, you might spot egrets or northern gannets that migrate through the area.

The Fort Morgan Loop starts at the intersection of AL Highway 59 and AL Highway 180 near the Fort Morgan Peninsula. You can keep watch for many types of waterbirds in the marshes on this loop and often see raptors coming through in the fall migration.

Plan to spend about a half day on each loop as you follow the suggestions guides provided along the way. You can even base yourself in Gulf Shores and plan day trips to additional nearby birding trail loops during your stay, as the opportunities for species change throughout the year and in each type of habitat.

Highlights: Touring the fort, nearby marshes, nature trails, and beach area

The Fort Morgan State Historic Site is an impressive attraction located 22 miles west of Gulf Shores. The masonry fort was built between 1819 and 1833 on Mobile Point between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The fort has a deep history tied to the Battle of Mobile Bay, Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II. Today, the site belongs to the State of Alabama and is a preserved piece of American history.

You can take a self-guided tour of the fort and grounds by downloading a map that highlights the points of interest on the site. You can see where naval minefields once guarded the bay, and learn about the importance of this fortification as you walk the grounds and viewing deck.

There is more to do at the site beyond visiting the fort. Fort Morgan also has a beach area, bird-watching areas, and nature trails . There are protected marshes in the area with pristine habitat for endangered bird species that inhabit the area or migrate through in the fall. Fort Morgan is open seven days a week.

Highlight: Nearby bike rentals make it easy to try out the many Gulf Shores bike trails

The best way to experience the Gulf Shores is through the outdoors, and the vast number of bike trails in the town give you plenty of ways to do that. One of the easiest bike trails to access is at Gulf State Park. It has paved trails for bicyclists that connect to picnic areas and beaches within the park.

There is a loop around Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park that is good for biking for all skill levels. The flat surface is great, especially for visitors to the area that can find nearby bike rentals.

Some of the trails in Gulf State Park make up sections of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system, which extends for 15 miles through Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. These trails take you through various ecosystems, where you get the added bonus of enjoying the scenic views of the local wildlife, marshes, and coastal swamps.

The Fort Morgan Road Trail is an 11-mile paved surface that takes bikers along Highway 180 and through the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. You can extend the route through Gulf State Park for a longer ride.

Highlight: Several world-class golf courses available to the public with ocean and dunes backdrops

For those looking for a round of golf with the Gulf Coast as a backdrop, the Gulf Shores has quite a few world-class courses. There are five golf courses in Gulf Shores and 14 in the area that you can easily access. Take your pick from courses, like the Arnold Palmer Championship public golf course at Cypress Bend at Craft Farms, or the nationally recognized Kiva Dunes public golf course .

Gulf Shores golf is an unforgettable experience, especially when you can combine the emerald waters and sunshine with premier golfing opportunities. Some golf resorts offer stay-and-play packages combining golf and lodging. You can also choose to base yourself by the beach and head out to a different course each day. Most golf courses also offer club rentals in case you left yours at home.

Most of the lodging options in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are vacation rentals like condos, cottages, and beach houses. Other lodging options include resort hotels, national chain hotels, RV campgrounds, and even lakeside cottages in Gulf State Park. Here are a few great-value hotels a short stroll or drive from the fabulous beaches of Alabama's Gulf Shores:

• Best Western on the Beach : This mid-range beachfront hotel is just steps to the sand, and features indoor and outdoor pools, along with bright beachy rooms.
• Staybridge Suites Gulf Shores : Also popular with families, this three-star hotel provides suites with kitchens, complimentary hot breakfast, social hour Mon-Weds, and an outdoor pool. This hotel is located a few miles north of the beach.
• Hampton Inn Gulf Shores : For budget-conscious travelers , this property is perfect. It's a five-minute drive to the beach and offers comfortable beds and an outdoor pool.

The best times to visit the Gulf Shores in Alabama are the windows of March, April, and May, as well as September, October, and November. While June, July, and August are popular months to visit for summer vacation schedules, they are also the wettest months in the Gulf Shores, which can impede beach time.

The spring months of March, April, and May have pleasant daytime temperatures, ranging from the high 60s to the low 80s, which are great for beach activities, water recreation, and ocean swimming. Excursion offerings are in full swing so you will have comfortable weather to enjoy them, whether it is dolphin-watching, fishing, or snorkeling.

September, October, and November also have comfortable temperatures that are cooling slightly from summer highs. You can expect a range from the high 80s down to the high 60s during these months, which also allows for ample swimming time in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico waters.

Be advised that June through November is hurricane season, and while the storms can hit at any point in that window, the peak months of concern are August and September.

This Under-the-radar Beach Destination in Alabama Has All the Perks of a Florida Escape With None of the Crowds

Alabama's Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have all the appeal of a Florida panhandle beach town, with none of the congestion.

Along the Gulf of Mexico, cozied up against the Florida-Alabama state line, travelers will find an underappreciated southern beach destination: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama . Together, the two cities are an under-the-radar, low-key region of the south boasting the same white sugar-sand beaches and spectacular outdoor space as the Florida panhandle — with significantly fewer crowds. The Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area is a tranquil region with a moderate climate (that means warm temperatures and sun-soaked skies year-round) and crystal clear blue-green water.

Spend a peaceful night at The Lodge at Gulf State Park , which is on the shores of the 6,150-acre Gulf State Park and blends into the natural environment as if it has always been a part of the landscape. Upon spending time in Gulf State Park, travelers will discover that locals are extremely passionate about protecting this environment and are eager to educate visitors on preserving the land and wildlife.

The lodge is a proud leader in the Sustainable Tourism movement (the building is constructed partially from recycled materials, and trash on-site is sorted into livestock feed, compost, recycling, or waste, among many other environmentally friendly initiatives ). Further, on-site activities focus on using the natural environment respectfully, whether that's taking Sandcastle University's classes to become an expert sand sculptor, or exploring 28 miles of nearby hiking and biking trails (the lodge, of course, offers complimentary bike rentals for guests).

Visitors can dive deeper into learning about the natural environment and how to protect it at the Nature Center, which sits on the RV Campground of the park as a “living museum." The center offers visitors the chance to see and learn about native wildlife like baby alligators, turtles, and snakes, among other animals. Plus, a longtime planned project, The Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism & Sustainability , a new facility that opened in response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, will soon begin construction and offer environmental education programs at Gulf Shore City schools and within the state park.

Just a few minutes drive from the Gulf State Park area, visitors can explore the town of Orange Beach — which is a larger, more urban-feeling city. And yet, it's still not nearly as crowded as nearby Florida panhandle beach destinations.

Here, visitors can enjoy classic water excursions, like boating from the Orange Beach Marina , or spend time on land shopping and dining at The Wharf, an outdoor entertainment center with a Ferris wheel, escape rooms, arcades, a 10,000-seat amphitheater, and another marina.

Dine at spots like the elegant Fisher's Upstairs , serving fresh-caught Alabama seafood in full view of the yachts floating in the Gulf of Mexico. Or, plan a rowdier night out at the nearby landmark Flora-Bama roadhouse bar, which is known for serving one of the best “Bushwackers” in the south (a blended, frozen rum drink that tastes like a boozy milkshake and packs a punch).

Whether setting home base as Orange Beach or in Gulf Shores, a trip to this vibrant, welcoming, and underrated southern region will be a relaxing and fun-filled experience to remember.

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Itinerary

Day 1 in gulf shores & orange beach.

To get to Gulf Shores, you’ll likely come in off I-10. The fastest way to the beach is to take the Baldwin Beach Express , a toll road that leads from I-10 to the heart of Orange Beach right by The Wharf.

The toll isn’t required until the southernmost end of the Beach Express, so you can turn off before the toll and take Hwy 59 the rest of the way, you’ll just have a lot more lights than you would with the toll road.

Lunch at The Hangout

Depending on what time you arrive in Gulf Shores, you may have time for lunch. The Hangout it the perfect first stop!

This fun restaurant is located right on Gulf Shores’ main public beach. They’ve got a menu of seasonal seafood, live music and dancing, games and contests, a foam machine, and really fun decor made of nostalgic items like vintage lunch boxes, matchbox cars, and rubber duckies.

I recommend the Hang 10 Burger or The Lifeguard Burger if you’re really hungry (it’s a pound of meat stacked with delicious extras, and it comes with a lifeguard whistle). For an appetizer, go for the Fried Calamari.

And to drink, their Shark Attack is their signature cocktail that’s a lot of fun. This beautiful blue drink comes with a toy shark filled with grenadine that you pour in for a blood-in-the-water effect.

Check-in at Turquoise Place

Turquoise Place is an amazing place to stay in Orange Beach.

These oversized condos are decked out with plush furnishings, top-of-the-line appliances in the full kitchen and laundry room, and every balcony has a private hot tub (that’s honestly my favorite part).

Some of the units are vacation rentals that you can book through places like VRBO , but a lot of the units are direct through Turquoise Place and Spectrum Resorts .

You actually get the best deal when you book direct because you get perks like complimentary beach towels waiting for you in your condo, complimentary daily breakfast, discounts at their dining and shopping outlets, keyless room entry with their wristbands, access to the Spectrum Club Lounge, mid-stay room cleanings, a concierge package that can stock your kitchen for you, and discounts on their gulf-front poolside cabanas.

Enjoy the Beach and Pool

Once you’ve check in, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the beach and pools.

Turquoise Place is right on the beach, so you’re just steps away from relaxing with your toes in the sand.

The resort also has indoor pools, outdoor pools, a lazy river, water slide, and a splash pad.

Dinner at Wolf Bay Lodge

Wolf Bay Lodge is a family-owned Gulf Coast tradition. They started as a bait shop along Wolf Bay in the 1940 before changing to a restaurant in 1973. The original restaurant was destroyed by a fire in 2008, and they reopened with a location here in Orange Beach.

Their menus feature hand-battered and cooked-to-order seafood with recipes made from scratch.

Start with the Fried Crab Claws. If you’re in the mood for a whole lot of seafood, go for the Captains Platter or the Wolf Bay Platter. My personal favorite was the buttery and delicious Shrimp Scampi.

End the Day in the Hot Tub

Because I love the private balcony hot tubs at Turquoise Place so much, I recommend ending every night of your 4 days in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores with a soak in the hot tub.

I’ll only include it in this itinerary once, but keep it in mind for night. It’s seriously the best way to relax after a long day of exploring.

Day 2 in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Your second day in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is going to be filled with non-beach activities because there’s more to this area than just the pearly white sands.

Breakfast at BuzzCatz Coffee & Sweets

BuzzCatz Coffee & Sweets is a cute local cafe that leans into its cat theme. It’s an adorable way to start your day.

They have simple breakfast foods, homemade pastries, coffee, tea, lite lunch items, and even ice cream.

I highly recommend their BuzzCatz “Pop Tarts”, which are large homemade versions of the classic kids breakfast treat. If you need something more to get you through the morning, their Breakfast Hollah is made with fresh Challah Dough filled with scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese.

Glass Blowing at the Coastal Arts Center

The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach is a beautiful campus on Wolf Bay. They have a fine art gallery, glass blowing, and a clay studio.

You can do classes at The Hot Shop glass blowing studio or the Clay Studio. I did glass blowing at The Hot Shop, and it was a lot of fun! It was hands-down one of my favorite things from my visit to Gulf Shores .

You’ll need to register for the class in advance, and remember to wear close-toed shoes.

During the glass blowing class, you get to learn how to make incredible creations. Choose from a blown glass ornament, a paperweight, a starfish, or a flower. I chose a flower.

The instructor will guide you through the whole process. Once you get in front of the fire, it honestly doesn’t take that long! But it is a little tough to pull and shape the glass, which the instructor will help you with. When you’re finished, you’ll have a new blown glass creation that they can ship to you or you can pick up the next day.

Lunch at LuLu’s

LuLu’s is an iconic Gulf Shores restaurant that’s owned and operated by Lucy Buffett, sister to singer Jimmy Buffett.

LuLu’s has similar Margaritaville vibes but with a bit more girly frills and family fun. There’s a ropes course, a sandy play area, an arcade, live music, and a gift shop.

The restaurant is located right on the Intracoastal Waterway, so you can watch barges go by as you eat. The menu is full of fresh coastal cooking from Lucy’s own recipes.

If you have food allergies, LuLu’s is the place to eat. They take it very seriously, and they have an extensive allergy menu that includes gluten free, dairy free, shellfish free, seafood free, egg free, soy free, and a small vegan menu. Allergy menu items are prepared in a separate area and a manager handles allergy orders from start to finish.

To start, get the Smoked Tuna Dip with tortilla chips. The Crab Melt Nachos are also great for an appetizer or for a meal. For your meal, I recommend the Grilled Shrimp Tacos. I also hear they have some of the best Chicken Tenders if you have picky eaters. To drink, I went with the Loopty Lu, but a Bucket of LuLu’s Rum Punch is also a top-notch option.

Visit Historic Fort Morgan

It’s a long drive out to Fort Morgan Historic Site on Fort Morgan Peninsula, but it’s worth the trip.

Fort Morgan was a masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. It played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. Later, the fort was used during the Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II. Fort Morgan was turned over to the state as a historic site in 1946.

Spend some time walking around the ruins of the fort; they’re full of picturesque nooks and crannies, and views from the top let you see Dauphin Island and the oil rigs dotted off the coast.

In addition to the 1834 fort, you can see the concrete artillery batteries built between 1895 and 1904, a small museum and gift shop displaying the military history of Mobile Point, and the exterior of historic military buildings dating from 1898 to 1910.

Get a Flight at High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas

High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas is a really fun restaurant and bar where you can get daiquiri flights and mimosa flights. I recommend visiting the Gulf Shores location that’s on your way back from Fort Morgan. This location is on the water of Little Lagoon and you can take out the swan and flamingo peddle boats.

They do have food, but you’re really here for the daiquiri flight (or the mimosa flight). They have so many fun flavors to choose from. And you can mix the daiquiri flavors to make something totally unique.

Get a flight of daiquiris like the Bushwacker, Pimento Cheese, and Key Lime. Try a bunch of different flavors and see what you like! (The Bushwacker was my favorite.)

Dinner at the Original Oyster House

Just across the water from High Tide is a great place for dinner: the Original Oyster House .

This restaurant has been a Gulf Shores institution since 1983. It’s a laid-back, casual seafood restaurant with chargrilled oysters that have won numerous awards.

It’s also usually pretty crowded. But don’t worry, you can go shopping at the boutiques in the attached shopping center while you wait.

Start with their Homemade Seafood Gumbo or their Shell Shocked Oyster Sampler. Their Parmesan Baked Shrimp was filled with buttery goodness. They also serve a great Bushwacker here.

Day 3 in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Day 3 of your Gulf Shores itinerary is a little bit of both land and sea. Don’t worry, I’ll get you back out on the water in this day’s itinerary!

Breakfast at the Sunliner Diner

Take a step back in time at the Sunliner Diner in Gulf Shores. Classic cars sit out front, the menu is made to look like a retro newspaper, the hostess is wearing a poodle skirt, they serve breakfast all day, and they have hand-spun milkshakes.

The Sunliner Diner is wonderful; it’s everything Steak & Shake wishes it could be.

This classic 1950s themed diner is a great way to start your day. On the menu are classic diner foods and all-day breakfast.

I had the Avocado Toast, but the Chocolate Chip Pancakes and the Chicken & Waffle Benedict are also great options. And you can get a milkshake for breakfast!

Visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is home to over 199 species, from peacocks to monkeys to lions to bears (my favorite!). Spread out over 25 acres in Gulf Shores, this little zoo packs in a whole lot of fun.

One of the highlights of visiting this zoo (besides Boodah the bear, who is my main highlight) is their animal encounters. They have a lemur encounter, a sloth encounter, and giraffe feedings.

I did the lemur encounter and got to feed some of the black-and-white ring-tailed lemurs. This is part of their enrichment and training, getting the lemurs used to new smells and teaching them to come to the front of the habitat for a treat when the keepers need to do their check-ups.

You can book your encounter when you get your ticket at the gate.

Lunch at The Gulf

The Gulf is a restaurant with an interesting set-up. The buildings are made from old shipping containers and recycled materials.

There is tons of outdoor seating so you can dine right on the beach. There’s a bar as soon as you walk in, and a gift shop with plenty of Gulf gear.

The changing seasonal menu features fresh seafood, with everything from tacos to sandwiches to seafood boils.

I recommend the Lobster & Shrimp Roll, some Parmesan Truffle Fries, and their Cheesecake for dessert.

Hammock Time Tiki Tours

It’s time to get out on the water with Hammock Time Tiki Tours ! Captain Glenn’s tiki-inspired pontoon boat is the best way to explore the backbays of Orange Beach.

Climb aboard the spacious pontoon boat, equipped with 2 double hammocks, a tiki bar, shaded seating, deck games, Bluetooth audio, and a bathroom onboard (you’re not going to find another tiki boat with a bathroom onboard).

They offer 2-hour, 4-hour, or private island tours. And it’s all up to you how you run it, where you go, and what you see.

On our tour, we pretty much just wanted to drink and enjoy the scenery. Captain Glenn kept an eye out for dolphins, and he found plenty of them for us! We had the best view of about a dozen dolphins who were playing around our boat.

The tiki tour is BYOB, so bring along any snacks and drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), sunscreen, towels, and sunglasses for your journey.

Dinner at Cobalt

Cobalt is right where the Hammock Time Tiki Tours docks, so I recommend sticking around for dinner (especially if you just drank a lot on the tiki boat).

This large restaurant has great views of the bay from every table. When the weather is nice, I definitely recommend dining outside on the patio.

Their menu features elevated seafood, with unique creations by three local chefs. And if there’s a long wait for a table and you have kids, you can order off the kids’ menu in advance. They’ll deliver the kids’ meal when its ready so you don’t have hangry kiddos.

I recommend the Tuna and Avocado Stack and the Firecracker Shrimp, both of which are on the appetizer menu but are great for meals. The Bushwacker here was also phenomenal.

Day 4 in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

For your final day before heading out, try not to be too sad! There are still some great things you can do before leaving your beach vacation behind.

Breakfast at The Southern Grind at Indigo

The Southern Grind at Hotel Indigo is a really cute and beachy coffee shop that’s attached directly to the hotel.

They offer their own specialty coffee blends, but they also have a menu of Southern comfort food, breakfast, homemade sweet treats, sandwiches, and salads.

I recommend the Biscuits & Gravy or Croissandwich.

Stop by City Donut

Need a road trip snack for your drive home? Stop by City Donut , the oldest donut shop in Orange Beach, for a donut or dozen for your trip.

Their donut flavors change daily and there’s always something new. They also offer a full ice cream menu and boba tea.

I definitely left there with a half dozen assorted donuts and an Alien Juice boba tea.

Walk Around The Wharf

One last stop before you hit the road should be to The Wharf in Orange Beach.

This waterfront dining and entertainment complex on the Intracoastal Waterway has dozens of shops and restaurants, the tallest Ferris Wheel in the Southeast, a huge amphitheater, and a nightly light show.

Take a walk around (maybe while you sip your boba tea from City Donut), stretch your legs before a long drive, and shop for some last minute souvenirs before heading home.

Where to Stay for 4 Days in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Obviously, I wrote this itinerary with a stay at the Turquoise Place in mind (that is where I stayed for my trip). But I wanted to give you plenty of options! You can read a little about some of the top places to stay below.

Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts in Orange Beach has large 3-5 bedroom beachfront condos right on the beach. I love that they have indoor and outdoor pools, a lazy river, and a water slide and splash pad.

Best Times To Visit Gulf Shores

The best times to visit Gulf Shores are March through May and September through November. Travelers can take advantage of these sweet spots outside the busy (and more expensive) summertime and enjoy swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, which still offers pleasant temperatures in the late spring and early fall. Plus, there are a variety of events and festivals during these months. Though the city is popular with snowbirds in the winter, you can get a hotel for a steal. If you're interested in a summer visit, know that June, July and August are three of the area's wettest months and also the most popular. You'll also want to book your hotel or vacation rental well in advance if you're visiting in the summer to secure the best price.

It’s not likely that Gulf Shores, Alabama, is on anyone’s travel bucket list. But perhaps this hidden gem of a destination is worth a second look. After all, this region of Alabama’s Gulf Coast has so much to offer visitors, from an abundance of natural activities to fresh-from-the-sea dining options to unbelievable beaches.

Gulf Shores is sure to delight as your next warm-weather haven. Here are eight reasons to plan a visit to the area.

1. It’s Easy To Get There

From almost anywhere in the Southeastern United States, Gulf Shores is a convenient trip. It’s situated about 30 miles west of Pensacola, Florida; 50 miles south of Mobile, Alabama; and 200 miles east of New Orleans. With airports in all three cities, you can easily rent a car or arrange shuttle transport to the beach.

If you plan on driving, Gulf Shores is likely closer than you think. It’s less than 400 miles from Atlanta; Jacksonville, Florida; Orlando; Memphis; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Tampa, Florida.

2. There Are Numerous Lodging Options

Whether you’re on a romantic getaway, a multigenerational family trip, or a girlfriends’ retreat, Gulf Shores offers plenty of suitable accommodations .

On my last visit to Gulf Shores, I was with extended family for a long holiday weekend; there were 18 of us, including kids and adults. For us, a beach house rental was the best option. That way, we got plenty of time together at the house, and it was easy to organize everyone in one central location. To keep costs down, we went grocery shopping at the beginning of the week and made numerous meals at the house. The pool and perfect waterfront location made our vacation in Gulf Shores a memorable, family-friendly one.

If a full-house rental isn’t your thing, there are plenty of hotels, resorts, condos, campgrounds, and more to accommodate your needs. In fact, there are more than 17,000 rentals in the area!

3. The Beach Is Both Lovely And Family Friendly

The main attractions of the Alabama Gulf Coast area are the beautiful beaches near Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Pristine, soft, white sand — 32 miles of it — stretches around the southern tip of the state and hugs the sparkling Gulf of Mexico. Plus, unlike other waterfront destinations that cater to the Spring Break crowd, Gulf Shores focuses on clean family fun. There are even rules that discourage drinking on the beach to protect that clean, pretty sand and keep traveling families happy.

4. The Culinary Itineraries Are A Foodie’s Dream

Since there’s so much to eat along the Gulf in Alabama, the tourism board has helpfully organized a number of culinary itineraries. These guides, known as the Food Trails , cover a variety of types of cuisine. Whether you like gumbo, crab, shrimp, oysters, or burgers, the Gulf Shores dining scene won’t disappoint. There’s even a bread pudding trail and a Key lime pie one to satisfy any sweet tooth. While fresh seafood dominates most menus, there are plenty of options for everyone in your party. Even the pickiest of eaters will be pleased with the selections available in Gulf Shores.

5. Adventure Awaits

Besides the sugar-white beaches, this part of Alabama offers numerous activities for visitors seeking adventure. The area is known for its fishing charters, with both backwater fishing and blue-water fishing options available. In Gulf Shores, you can catch marlin, bluefish, flounder, grouper, Spanish mackerel, red snappers, and so much more. No matter what time of year you visit, it’s fishing season .

Another great option for adventure is the Hummingbird Zipline Course at the Wharf at Orange Beach next door to Gulf Shores. This adrenaline-filled option features eight zip lines that stretch more than 6,000 feet. The highest is over 100 feet in the air! And with the course’s picturesque setting right on the water, the views from up high simply can’t be beat.

If you want the view without the exertion, plan to visit the tallest Ferris wheel on the Gulf. Located on the Wharf at Orange Beach, this attraction costs just $5 to ride and is also adjacent to a mini-golf course.

6. There Are Some Fantastic Day-Trip Options

When you need a break from the beach, why not take a day trip from Gulf Shores? There are plenty of fun attractions within a short drive.

If you’re a history buff, head to the National Naval Aviation Museum in nearby Pensacola. The museum is one of the most popular in the state of Florida and boasts a collection of more than 150 aircraft from multiple branches of the armed forces. Or, consider a trip in the other direction to Mobile, where you’ll find the famous World War II battleship USS Alabama . Often called “The Hero of the Pacific,” this legendary ship has been decommissioned and now operates as a museum.

Another day-trip option is a visit to charming Fairhope, Alabama . This vibrant beachside community is known for its active arts scene. If you can, time your visit so that it coincides with the town’s First Friday Art Walk. To experience this fun and enriching activity, simply begin at the Eastern Shore Art Center and walk through the galleries in town. You’ll have the chance to chat with local artists, sample delicious bites from area food vendors, and enjoy this walkable small town.

7. Its Flora And Fauna Are Fascinating

In addition to the aforementioned fish, the Gulf Shores area offers a variety of flora and fauna for visitors to explore.

At the nearby Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge , you can enjoy access to more than 7,000 acres of protected land meant to conserve America’s fish, plants, and birds. Plus, there are six distinct loops of the famed Alabama Coastal Birding Trail in the area. More than 400 different species of birds can be spotted along this trail.

Alabama is also known for its sea turtles. In fact, more than 50,000 sea turtles have hatched along the Alabama Gulf since 2003. Locals and tourists alike can participate in their conservation through the Share the Beach initiative, which helps people understand how to protect these creatures. Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean that your healthy lifestyle has to take a back seat. Gulf Shores offers plenty of options for those who want an active trip.

There are a plethora of golf courses in the region, and there’s yoga in Orange Beach, both in the studio and on the beach. Additionally, there are miles of backcountry bike trails in Gulf Coast State Park and the surrounding area, including the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail . Would the path slightly less beaten provide the same summery perks Florida is famous for? I packed my camera and favorite straw hat and went to find out.

‘Bama bound

Getting there was surprisingly easy.

My friend and I flew into Pensacola International Airport from O’Hare International Airport, which took just over two hours on a full flight. Pensacola is typically the airport of choice because it’s cheaper and offers plenty of flights.

We picked up our rental and began the leisurely hour journey, passing through small towns and crossing several bridges as we drove parallel to the water. We quickly waved goodbye to Florida, heading over Perdido Pass into Alabama’s Orange Beach.

Orange Beach and its neighbor, Gulf Shores, are two small beach towns on Perdido Key with combined populations of roughly 22,000 locals — which swells to millions with annual visitors. With a strictly tourism-driven economy, 85 percent of the area’s real estate is vacation rentals — or about 15,000 hotel and condo units, according to Kay Maghan, public relations manager for Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism.

We stayed at Turquoise Place , a luxury resort along Orange Beach with spacious condos in two buildings. Our unit had a fully equipped kitchen, a full-size laundry room and an ocean-view balcony with a hot tub and gas grill. Elsewhere on the property were pools, a water slide and a lazy river.

After settling down, we had dinner at The Gulf, an outdoor restaurant and bar with walk-up service made of cobalt blue shipping containers. Its patio shares a sea wall with the gulf and showcases plush couches and string lights that pair perfectly with my spicy blackberry jalapeño margarita, mahi-mahi tacos and a half pound of chilled peel-and-eat shrimp.

We watched as the sun went down as a watercolor masterpiece and stopped for a nightcap at 8 Reale OBAL , a speakeasy bar that will cost you a small pirate’s booty. With drinks averaging $25, the swanky spot is concealed behind a storefront posing as a jewelry store. We entered a code — provided daily on its Facebook page — and walked through a heavy vault door. The copper ceilings and navy velvet chairs showed off a secretly bougie side of Orange Beach — one that allegedly lured in Morgan Freeman the day after we left.

Up-close adventures

We began the next day on the beach, which stays cool courtesy of fluffy sugar-white sand washed down from the Appalachian Mountains, known as crushed quartz crystal.

The shoreline glittered with shells, partial sand dollars and colorful umbrellas as gentle waves rolled in the distance. Across the gulf were various water activities, including fishing, boating and parasailing. We watched cunning pelicans soar past, holding massive, doomed fish.

The mood was calm and friendly; even at the day’s peak, it never felt overcrowded, rowdy or messy.

Next was our hourlong lesson with Sandcastle University . Using buckets, measuring spoons, a cup, a plastic knife, and a straw, our instructor, Catie, astonished us with her simple techniques for building a turreted tower. The basics were a door and windows; the frills were staircases and cobblestone etching. For a 34-year-old, this was exceptionally fun.

We stopped for a quick lunch at longtime mainstay DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen, known for its authentic Royal Reds — a premier variety of Alabama shrimp. Be prepared to twist a few heads off, but the buttery reward is worth it.

After some golden coconut shrimp and peppery au gratin potatoes, we began the 40-minute drive west to Fort Morgan , a seaside military fort built in the early 1800s and used during the Spanish-American War and both World Wars. A National Historic Landmark, it features spacious grounds with networks of connected rooms, tunnels and budding stalactites. The up-close access to history is amazing. In the distance, ships and oil rigs lay beyond the sea birds resting on cement blocks as waves splash against them.

We sought shade in the nearby Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and took a relaxing 1-mile loop walk through the Jeff Friend Trail, which put us in the thick of a serene jungle. Surrounded by towering long-leaf pines, ferns and saw palmettos, we glimpsed only a tiny lizard, but heard a symphony of bird songs, squirrel chatter and plenty of mysterious fluttering from the bushes. Dirt trails led to a waterfront boardwalk before it curved into a lily-pad-filled bog.

The last stop for the evening was the lovely Jesse’s On The Bay . Upstairs, a fine-dining restaurant serves dry-aged steaks and fresh seafood. Downstairs, a bar called The Cold Hole serves cocktails.

Just steps from the bay, we watched the sun go down in a fiery blaze while sipping colorful drinks — the best way to end the day.

Cruising the coast

Saturday began with a free, heart-pumping 5-mile bike ride through Gulf State Park . Our tour guide, Corey, led us past grassy marshes, through ridges and across creeks. The oak canopies dripping with Spanish moss evoked the Southern gothic aesthetic you’d expect from Tennesee Williams.

In the evening, we sailed into the gulf on a yellow catamaran with Sail Wild Hearts . We enjoyed complimentary snacks and yacht rock as we savored our last magnificent sunset. A family of dolphins jumped beside us.

Before we left, we ate at Big Fish Restaurant and Ba r — an unassuming fine dining gem on the end of a single-story strip mall — and CoastAL , a beachy brunch spot with fresh seafood, pastries and massive cinnamon rolls. I had been looking forward to Big Fish for its beloved sushi, which did not disappoint. Straightforward and simple, the cucumber salad, pork gyoza and classic tuna roll were everything I’d hoped for. Get there early or be ready to wait.

With phenomenal food, views, access to nature and soft beaches, plus all the Southern hospitality you’d expect, Alabama’s Gulf Coast was a lovely antidote for Chicago’s fickle spring. It was a well-balanced mix of commercial and local, hometown and upscale. I could have spent longer exploring the area and would happily return.

For those who can’t make it for a summer vacation, a trip in mid-April is also a good bet. The weather is perfect and there are fewer crowds.

Party Along Turquoise Waters at the Country’s Coolest Beachfront Music Festival

With acts like lana del rey, zach bryan, and odesza, there’s something for everyone..

Music always sounds a little nicer by the beach. If you know that to be true, head to Hangout Music Festival, a celebration of music held each May on the white powdery sands of Gulf Shores, Alabama that transforms the popular family beach destination into the biggest music-filled party in the South for three glorious days.

Returning for its 14th edition from May 17–19, the festival began in 2010 when the landmark Hangout restaurant threw a small beach concert to lure visitors back to Alabama’s beaches after the BP oil spill. It has grown to attract more than 40,000 visitors annually, with everyone from Foo Fighters, Jack Harlow, and Kygo to Jimmy Buffet gracing its stages.

The 2024 version continues Hangout Fest’s tradition of bringing a lineup of eclectic acts to multiple stages, using the Gulf’s turquoise waters as a backdrop. Friday night will see a primetime performance from headliner Lana del Rey, with the Chainsmokers playing a beachside set immediately prior. Saturday brings Odesza to Hangout’s main stage, and country superstar Zach Bryan closes things out on Sunday. The rest of the lineup brings some of the biggest names in rock, pop, country, and electronic music, ranging from ’90s hip-hop sensation Nelly to Euphoria’s Dominic Fike, with indie rockers like Cage the Elephant and EDM star Dom Dolla on the bill too.

But the Hangout Festival, more than almost any other, is about so much more than the music. What makes it so special is its spring-break-for-grown-ups vibes, where festival-goers pack beachfront condo high rises stretching for miles. Days begin by making new friends on the beach as you compete in friendly games of flip cup and beach ball, making plans to see acts later in the day.

More things to do in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are far more than the backdrop for a music festival. A short walk from the main gate finds you at Gulf State Park , one of the most scenic spots in Alabama boasting 6,000 acres of beachfront nature. You can rent a bike from one of several convenient stations—kind of like an in-park Citibike—and traverse the 28 miles of trails through coastal wilderness and inland lakes.

If you’d like to combine golf and music, the area offers over a dozen golf courses open to the public. The Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club is particularly scenic, with holes running along Mobile Bay and a nature preserve on both sides. Nearby you can also book all sorts of fishing charters , too, that allow you to head out into the bay and catch pompano, grouper, and delicious red snapper. If you want some time on the water minus the casting, Sail Wild Hearts offers scenic sunset cruises that give an idyllic alternative to the festival.

Best restaurants and bars in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

The area’s got plenty of eating options besides festival food. Just outside the gates you’ll find one of the best burgers in Alabama—as well as some rousing post-fest karaoke—at the Pink Pony Pub . North of the festival, Taco Fiesta dishes up the best Mexican food in the area, with a breezy side patio for devouring your carne asada and carnitas. Papa Rocco’s offers some solid, beer-soaking pizza a few blocks from the fest. And DeSoto’s has a menu of fresh seafood for those looking to sample the local fare.

For something a little more upscale, Jesse’s on the Bay is a seafood and steak institution with an impressive wine list and waterfront views. The Wharf entertainment district in Orange Beach has an impressive collection of nicer restaurants too, with Italian options at Villaggio Grill , and seafood at Mile Marker 158 Dockside . For breakfast, no trip to Gulf Shores is complete without something from the omelet station at Hazel’s Nook . And Brick and Spoon serves over-the-top waffles and breakfast sandwiches that are enough food for the entire day.

The Hangout Music Festival typically lets out before 11 pm, and if you’d like to keep the party going you’re not lacking for options. The landmark, must-hit bar is the Flora-Bama , a multi-story roadhouse on the Florida-Alabama state line where you can drink in two states at once and even go to church on Sunday . It’s where you’ll find Hangout’s unofficial after party, where the craziest stories always begin.

Closer in, Big Beach Brewing pours a fantastic collection of lighter, beachier beers and is one of the better small-town breweries in the South. For cocktails, find the 8 Reale speakeasy hidden behind a jewelry store—its password lurks somewhere on the bar’s social media. You can also try a flight of daiquiris by the water at High Tide , and maybe take a paddle boat out if you feel inspired.

Where to stay in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Your best bet is to stay right in Gulf Shores, since you can walk to the Hangout festival from pretty much anywhere. The bulk of the accommodations in Gulf Shores are in beachfront condo towers, which you can find on all the traditional vacation rental booking sites like Airbnb and VRBO. Though many book through other platforms like  Gulf Shores Rentals and the  area’s official tourism agency. The best ones are reserved up a year in advance, and some Hangout regulars keep their same digs every year.

Of course, you can save money and find more availability by staying in Orange Beach, about 15 minutes from the festival. Hangout runs shuttle buses to Orange Beach too, and if you don’t mind the after-festival crowds clamoring for bus space, it’s an economical option. North of the festival, you’ll find hotels and rentals in Foley and other nearby cities, though no shuttles run there so you’ll have to figure out transportation and parking every day.

For those who insist on hotels, the  Lodge at Gulf State Park is easily the coolest hotel in the area, a beachfront Hilton that feels like a nature resort. The  Phoenix All Suites looks directly down on the festival, while the  Best Western On The Beach is the closest hotel to the main gates.

The space station looks like an airplane or a very bright star moving across the sky, except it doesn't have flashing lights or change direction. It will also be moving considerably faster than a typical airplane (airplanes generally fly at about 600 miles per hour; the space station flies at 17,500 miles per hour).

How do I Spot The Station?

What does all this sighting information mean?

Time  is when the sighting opportunity will begin in your local time zone. All sightings will occur within a few hours before or after sunrise or sunset. This is the optimum viewing period as the sun reflects off the space station and contrasts against the darker sky.

Visible  is the maximum time period the space station is visible before crossing back below the horizon.

Max Height  is measured in degrees (also known as elevation). It represents the height of the space station from the horizon in the night sky. The horizon is at zero degrees, and directly overhead is ninety degrees. If you hold your fist at arm's length and place your fist resting on the horizon, the top will be about 10 degrees.

Appears is the location in the sky where the station will be visible first. This value, like maximum height, also is measured in degrees from the horizon. The letters represent compass directions -- N is north, WNW is west by northwest, and so on.

Disappears represents where in the night sky the International Space Station will leave your field of view.

Back-to-back shark attacks injure 2 teens, adult near Florida beach; one victim loses arm

Three people were injured in back-to-back shark attacks in waters off Florida's Gulf Coast on Friday, officials said.

Two of the victims - an adult woman and a juvenile girl - were airlifted to hospitals for treatment of their injuries, according to Walton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Corey Dobridnia.

One of the victims, a 45-year-old woman, lost her lower left arm in the first attack. She was critically injured shortly before 1:15 pm at the beach in Watersound, Florida, about 15 miles up the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach.

The second incident where two people were injured occurred at Inlet Beach between south Walton and Bay Counties, the sheriff's office said. The victims, ages 15 to 17, were in waist-deep water about 4 miles from where the first attack occurred.

"We're 100% confident that this was done by a shark," Dobridnia told USA TODAY. "It's within, a very short distance it's most likely going to be the same shark."

Officials on the lookout for bull shark

Police have asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to lookout for a bull shark, which are common in the area, Dobridnia said.

Officials closed public access to the Gulf of Mexico in Walton counties Friday afternoon, with double-red flags flying over beaches in the surrounding area; anyone violating the closure was threatened with a  $500 fine .

Officials will revaluate when the beaches can be reopened on Saturday after consulting with marine life experts, South Walton Fire District Fire Chief Ryan Crawford said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

"It's rare, exceedingly rare, to have three victims in one day," Crawford said. "We need to get a little time and distance until we can safely allow everybody to go back in the water."

The incidents mark the first shark-related incidents in Florida in 2024, according to trackingsharks.com .
