Travel Inspired Jewelry Guide: Travel Themed Jewelry for Travelers

If you love travel and jewelry you’re probably going to love this guide to jewelry for travelers! We focus primarily on handmade and unique travel jewelry, and cover jewelry that will suit any budget and style.

I fell in love with travel themed jewelry while searching for travel themed wedding rings for Laurence and I’s wedding. I have since acquired more travel jewelry pieces and love using jewelry as a way of expressing my passion for travel.

We’ve put together a list of a wide range of travel jewelry items in this article for those looking for a way to express their own love for travel, searching for a gift for a traveler, or just looking for inspiration about what types of travel themed jewelry are out there.

Our list contains dozens of items that span the range of jewelry types, budgets, and fashion tastes. Although many of the jewelry pieces are designed with women in mind, we’ve also included a number of unisex and men’s jewelry pieces.

Travel Inspired Jewelry: Best Jewelry for Travelers

As I said, I got a bit obsessed with travel inspired jewelry when searching for a design for our engagement/wedding rings (we purchased a customized version of these World Map rings ). After planning our wedding, I wrote a post on handmade travel themed wedding products , which included a few travel themed jewelry items. I wanted to expand on that to write a full article focused solely on travel jewelry, so here we go!

Just so you know, many of the items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel related jewelry online.

The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses, and many of the jewelry pieces featured were inspired by the wanderlust and travels of the artists’ themselves!

But we have also included jewelry from national and international fine jewelry stores as well to provide a range of jewelry options. Prices of pieces on the list range from under $10 to over $500, with the vast majority of jewelry falling in the $25 to $75 range.

Necklaces are some of the most commonly worn pieces of jewelry. Whether you love long pendant necklaces, dainty sterling silver necklaces, chunky chokers, or personalized lockets, there are plenty of ways to show of your love for travel.

This delicate sterling silver necklace is in the shape of the state of Ohio with a heart cutout. Vintage Style Travel Themed Pendant Necklaces

These whimsical handcrafted pendant necklaces are made from quality printed images covered by a clear domed glass cabochon that protects and magnifies the printed image underneath. Each pendant includes a matching 24″ necklace with a lobster-style clasp. Lots of designs with maps, quotes, and travel attractions available.

Compass Rose Necklace

This dainty compass rose necklace has a small sterling silver charm and chain that is perfect for those who prefer small and more discreet jewelry. I wear this necklace a lot.

Globe Bead Necklace

This sapphire blue globe necklace features a small round sapphire blue Czech glass bead, antique pewter charm, and silver plated chain. Charm can be purchased alone or with a chain. Other globe designs in various shapes and sizes available.

Jet World Pendant Necklace

Show off your wanderlust with this popular pendant necklace that features two pendants, one of a globe and one of a compass rose. Available in sterling silver, yellow gold, or rose gold. The chain is available in a number of different lengths so you can get the perfect fit.

World Map Necklace

This handmade world map necklace features multiple pieces joined together to create a world map design. Necklace and chain is made from sterling silver of 14K filled yellow or rose gold. Personalization possible.

Tiny Book Necklace

This tiny book necklace features a miniature copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Several chain styles and 3 book sizes are available. Working Compass Necklace

This working compass necklace allow you to engrave the back of the compass with any sort of quote, text, or image of your choice. Compass is made from antique looking brass and comes on a brass chain. A leather case for the compass necklace can be added.

A travel-related necklace that doubles as a working compass—what is not to love as an adventurer?! Do note that the pendants do have a bit of weight to them since they are actual compasses. The Elite Custom Design USA shop makes several other working compass products, including custom orders.

Saint Christopher Pendant Necklace

This sterling silver pendant with stainless steel chain depicts the Christian saint Saint Christopher who is known as the patron saint of travel. He is depicted with a staff and carrying Jesus as a baby on his shoulders.

Many Christians display a token of Saint Christopher to show devotion and to aid in safe travels, and my grandmother always kept one in her car. You can see more St. Christopher jewelry here .

Double-Sided World Map Locket

This world map locket is made of vintage brass and enamel. It is double sided and shows the western hemisphere on one side and the eastern hemisphere on the other. Locket is also available in silver.

Africa Charm Necklace

This inexpensive engraved Africa necklace depicts some of the animals, people, and resources of Africa. The pendant and chain are made of stainless steel and the pendant is available in black, silver, rose, or gold.

These handmade leather cuff bracelets are made using recycled leather and handstamped pewter metal. A lot of travel-inspired designs and quotes are available. The store offers both narrow leather cuff and wide leather cuff bracelets.

I would suggest something fairly simply like a nice chain with a compass, compass rose, globe, or airplane charm. For an anklet, especially if gifting, I’d recommend something made of either a fairly strong metal that doesn’t tarnish easily or a strong cord material as anklets can get a lot of wear and tear and are often more exposed to dirt/moisture than other types of jewelry. Hi Richard, Yes, Laurence really loves the compass watch and has been wearing it everyday! The only downside is that it is difficult to tell the exact time as it just had the compass directions for 12, 3, 6, and 9, but the in between hours/minutes can be a bit trickier. But Laurence still loves wearing it. If you want a watch for both a cool accessory and to tell exact time, I would choose one of Carmen’s designs with numbers. You can also message Carmen as she may be able to do a compass design with numbers or have other suggestions; she is always adding new designs. ~ Jessica

I got the cuff links for my husband a couple of years ago because I thought they were so neat. I like the state outline idea, but I have to say that CT doesn’t have a very interesting state. Sort of makes me want to be from Texas:) The wristlet is something totally new to me – that is a great idea!

The 2025 Real ID deadline for new licenses is really real this time, DHS says

If you plan on flying around the country in 2025 and beyond, you might want to listen up.

You have about 365 days to make your state-issued driver’s license or identification “Real ID” compliant, per the Department of Homeland Security.  

The Real ID compliance is part of a larger act passed by Congress in 2005 to set “minimum security standards” for the distribution of identification materials, including driver’s licenses. This means that certain federal agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration or DHS, won’t be able to accept state-issued forms of identification without the Real ID seal.

It's taken a while for the compliance to stick, with DHS originally giving a 2020 deadline before pushing it back a year, then another two years and another two years after that due to “backlogged transactions” at MVD offices nationwide, according to previous USA TODAY reports.

You won’t be able to board federally regulated commercial aircraft, enter nuclear power plants, or access certain facilities if your identification documents aren’t Real ID compliant by May 7, 2025.

Here’s what we know about Real IDs, including where to get one and why you should think about getting one.

Do I have to get a Real ID?

Not necessarily. 

If you have another form of identification that TSA accepts, there probably isn’t an immediate reason to obtain one, at least for travel purposes. But if you don’t have another form of identification and would like to travel around the country in the near future, you should try to obtain one. 

Here are all the other TSA-approved forms of identification:

◾ State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License

◾ U.S. passport

◾ U.S. passport card

◾ DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

◾ U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents

◾ Permanent resident card

◾ Border crossing card

◾ An acceptable photo ID issued by a  federally recognized , Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe

◾ HSPD-12 PIV card

◾ Foreign government-issued passport

◾ Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

◾ Transportation worker identification credential

◾ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)

◾ U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

◾ Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

However, federal agencies “may only accept” state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards that are Real ID compliant if you are trying to gain access to a federal facility. That includes TSA security checkpoints.

Enhanced driver’s licenses, only issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards, according to DHS. 

What can I use my Real ID for?

For most people, it's all about boarding flights.

You can only use your Real ID card to obtain access to "nuclear power plants, access certain facilities, or board federally regulated commercial aircrafts," according to DHS.

The cards can't be used to travel across any border, whether that's Canada, Mexico, or any other international destination, according to DHS.

How do I get a Real ID? What does a Real ID look like?

All you have to do to get a Real ID is to make time to head over to your local department of motor vehicles.

Every state is different, so the documents needed to verify your identity will vary. DHS says that at minimum, you will be asked to produce your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and lawful status.

The only difference between the state-issued forms of identification you have now and the Real ID-compliant card you hope to obtain is a unique marking stamped in the right-hand corner. The mark stamped on your Real ID compliant cards depends on the state.

Consumers might be paying more than credit card perks are worth, officials say

Credit card holders could be paying more in fees and interest than their travel rewards and other perks are worth, Biden administration officials are arguing, raising scrutiny on loyalty programs that shape millions of people’s spending.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Transportation held a joint hearing in Washington on Thursday that brought together representatives from airlines, financial institutions, unions and consumer advocacy groups to discuss whether new regulations are needed.

Regulators are looking into the promises made around sign-up bonuses, changes to point values, obstacles in redeeming points and loss of rewards when cards are closed. They’re especially focused on travel rewards, like those offered by airline-branded credit cards that let users rack up frequent flyer miles. Forty-one percent of Americans have travel rewards credit cards, according to a NerdWallet survey last year.

“We’re going to look into how we can make sure companies are being straightforward about what people will get from these frequent flyer miles or loyalty programs when they sign up, and whether people are actually getting the deal that they were promised,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said at Thursday’s hearing.

The heightened scrutiny on credit card rewards is part of the White House’s broader crackdown on “junk fees” and other pricing practices , particularly in industries like financial services and airlines , that the administration sees as unfairly squeezing consumers and contributing to inflation.

In March, the CFPB lowered the late fees that credit card companies charge, drawing swift industry pushback . Two weeks ago, the Transportation Department said it would require airlines to quickly give cash refunds to passengers whose flights are canceled or seriously delayed.

The CFPB, with purview over financial institutions, has cracked down on banks for credit card sign-up bonuses before. Last July, it ordered Bank of America to pay more than $100 million for practices including withholding or denying bonus points to tens of thousands of consumers.

Federal regulators are now looking more closely at airline credit cards too. With annual fees as high as $650 and average interest rates of 25.3%, according to LendingTree , they can be much costlier than the average credit card, which in many cases have no annual fees and charge comparatively lower rates, averaging 24.7%.

CFPB Director Rohit Chopra told NBC News prior to the hearing that federal authorities could consider regulations, or even law enforcement actions, if they determine companies are breaking their promises to consumers.

“We see that for many of these airline rewards programs, credit card companies are charging huge interest rates, sometimes 30% or more. And many consumers actually lose out on these deals. They may be paying way more than the value of the rewards that they accrue,” Chopra said.

Even if consumers are able to pay their bills on time and avoid interest payments, consumers have complained about restrictions on using the points they’ve accrued.

Buttigieg told NBC News ahead of Thursday’s hearing that he had concerns about “abrupt changes” in the value of points, given the airlines’ control over how many points a flight from, say, New York to Honolulu might cost.

Airlines for America, a coalition representing the nation’s largest airlines, said Thursday that there is “fierce competition” within the industry for credit card loyalty, adding that “consumers have the power of choice when picking a carrier for air travel or a credit card for spending, with a wide range of options, to pick what best fits their needs.”

The Electronic Payments Coalition, representing credit unions, community banks and payment card networks, points to CFPB data showing the value of rewards points has risen from an average 1.4 cents per dollar spent in 2019 to 1.6 cents in 2022. In a statement Thursday, the group described regulators’ scrutiny of credit card rewards as “politically motivated.”

Loyalty programs, which sell points back to consumers at prices they set, have been a big source of revenue for major airlines.

Delta Air Lines said it brought in $6.5 billion in revenue linked to its loyalty programs just last year, and American Airlines said 80% of its revenue this year will come from loyalty program members. When United Airlines pledged its entire loyalty program for a loan in 2020, it valued the asset at $21.9 billion.

Lauren Randall, who lives in Norwalk, Connecticut, told NBC News she recently applied for a travel credit card that offered 40,000 miles at sign-up, only to receive a promotion in the mail just hours later for the very same card offering 60,000 points. She said she called to see if she could receive the better promo but was denied, calling it a “bait and switch.”

“It feels like every year, either the seats get smaller, or the prices go up, or there’s some sort of excuse,” Randall said. “It would be great to hold these companies more accountable for the experience and what they promise.”

Corporate Amex Platinum cards can be linked to either an individual or a corporate rewards program, each card can be enrolled in one program at a time. With the corporate rewards program, designated account administrators can manage and redeem rewards. Is it hard to get a corporate credit card?
