58 years old, I chose this bike because I wanted a high-end model. I typically ride 20 miles or less, and I enjoy the comfort and handling of this bike. Although the top end is a little slow, the speed/comfort ratio is good. It’s suitable, in my opinion, for someone who wants a good bike but isn’t a serious biker. The quality is there.

Excellent Bike For Almost Anywhere.

I hadn’t ridden a bicycle since I was 15 years old. It’s been a while since then. Returning to the saddle is made simpler by The Verge. IT is a very comfortable bicycle. fantastic for simply cruising anywhere. But do not fall for the trick. The Verge is capable of taking on challenging trail rides. That bike I used to ride had a 10 speed and could go anywhere. I rekindle that spirit and run the Verge through everything. With the gearing, you can climb hills on any surface. The gearing has significant gaps. You’ll need to develop your shifting skills. When purchasing, adjust the bike’s setup and replace the pedals. A great bike, but not so great tires.

I have 260 lbs. and am 60 years old. I received this bike as a reward from my employer for 30 years of service. I primarily use this to ride rail trails. In the last year, I’ve added about 350 miles. During the early 1990s, I owned a Swinn mountain bike. How much of a difference switching to this bike made. My bike is great, and I highly suggest it. But after riding the bike for so many miles, the tires are extremely worn. They continue to be fine, but it’s unclear for how long. The front spokes needed to be adjusted, but other than that, nothing to complain about.

I don’t ride often, but I do occasionally. 15 to 20 mpd 6 to 7 days per week. The seat’s proximity to the handlebars caught my attention right away because I have a particularly long torso (imagine wearing one of those big, tall shirts). like how it’s uncomfortable to stand up and pedal quickly. Also very peculiar is the gearing. 2/3 is awkward but 2/2 is pedaling as fast as your legs can go up hills. Although undoubtedly not a Cannondale, I had higher expectations for such a cheap bike. My hybrid Cannondale-owning riding partners breeze past me with ease. Although the tires are 700/45, the resistance difference shouldn’t have much of an effect. I don’t know why they’re cheap bearings. I was able to regain some of the stretch from the seatpost to the HB post by fully lowering my handlebars.

The Verve+ 2’s standard Active Line MY19 motor has been replaced with the Bosch Active Line Plus MY20 motor. With higher peak wattage, more torque, higher maximum assist, and higher maximum cadence, this motor offers a slight increase in power and performance . Though they are still quite similar and the majority of riders will be fine on either model, you can tell the difference if you test the two motors side by side. It is best suited for more active riders who enjoy cycling and getting some exercise and only need an electric motor occasionally to assist and balance out some steep inclines on their commute. This motor is incredibly sensitive and is based on torque.
Shimano’s Alivio groupset has a wide range of 11-36 teeth on the nine-speed cassette that is more than adequate for all types of city riding, and it performs flawlessly as usual . The Alivio trigger shifters are quite satisfying to use, and the up-shifting paddle is a two-way, making it easier to shift while keeping your fingers on or close to the brakes.
Shimano’s MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are back and still perform admirably, offering quiet and smooth stopping power and simple operation in comparison to mechanical disc brakes. In addition, hydraulic brakes don’t need to be tightened, which means they need less maintenance overall than mechanical brakes.
In comparison to the Bosch PowerPack 400, which was mounted on top of the downtube on the Verve+ 2, the Bosch PowerTube 500 has an additional 100 watt-hours of capacity and now seamlessly integrates into the towntube. The bike appears more “stealthy” thanks to the clean integration, which also makes it look much nicer and keeps the battery better protected. This can lower the risk of theft. The battery has a flip-up handle for convenient carrying when removed and can be charged on or off the bike.
The key used to remove the battery is made by ABUS and is keyed alike ready, allowing you to order locks and other accessories from ABUS that will function with your keys. You can order new keys with your key identification card if you lose both of yours, so keep it someplace safe.
Additionally compatible with Range-boost is the battery setup! The PowerPack 500 battery can be mounted using the three bottle cage bosses on the top of the downtube, which is a feature provided by Bosch and effectively doubles your maximum range. This is much more convenient than simply purchasing a separate battery that needs to be carried around and changed out because it enables you to charge both batteries simultaneously while mounted on the bike.
The ride feel and responsiveness are excellent. The Verve+ 3 is incredibly smooth and satisfying to ride even with the motor turned off because Trek has been manufacturing acoustic bicycles for a very long time, and it really shows in the level of craftsmanship and perfect tuning of the bike. When the motor is turned on, the electrical system by Bosch exhibits a similar level of expertise, responding instantly to changes in pedal pressure and reading torque, cadence, and rear wheel speed at a rate of more than 1,000 readings per second!
The Purion display is the smallest Bosch offers, and thanks to the excellent contrast ratio of the grayscale LCD display, it is unobtrusive and out of the way while still providing clear and easy-to-read information. I like this display because it provides the essential information and is easy to use, allowing me to concentrate on riding without having to fuss with settings.

Cons Of Trek Verve 3

For many riders, the lack of front suspension won’t be an issue, but if you reside in a region with unpaved roads and numerous potholes, you might not enjoy riding there with this setup. Although you would lose the high adjustability of the Blendr quill stem, riders with sensitive hands and/or wrists may also find the ride to be too rough. You could switch out the stem for a suspension stem.
If you prefer to have more statistics , programmable settings, and perhaps a USB port for charging small electronics while riding, the Bosch Purion display may leave you wanting more. The Purion is also not detachable, making it susceptible to weather damage or bumps from the bike rack. Nevertheless, it is quite durable and ought to be able to withstand anything barring a severe direct impact. On the Verve+ 3, however, mounting any accessories that wrap around the downtube will prevent you from removing the PowerTube battery from the frame without first removing your accessories, which would be inconvenient and time-consuming. However, unless you keep the bike inside at all times, it’s generally not a good idea to leave the battery in the frame while it’s mounted on the bike for charging. Batteries are the most expensive part of an ebike and don’t perform well when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time. When mounted, they also increase the risk of theft. If you choose the RangeBoost upgrade, these mounting bosses really come into their own because they’re used to hold the mounting parts for the extra battery in place.
Although the charge port is very low and close to the cranks on the left side, you can still charge the battery while it is safely inside the downtube. This is a dangerous position because if the bike is moved or knocked over while charging, the cranks and charging cord could become tangled. Observations Of Trek Verve 3

Along with Giant and Specialized, Trek is regarded as one of the “Big Three” bicycle manufacturers in the world. They have hundreds of dealers just in the United States, which gives them a convincing advantage in terms of support, as well as color and size options—even though you pay a premium price! A great-looking low-step electric bike, the Trek Verve+ 3 Lowstep has all the gear you need to cycle around town with minimal effort. The Bosch Active Plus mid-drive motor offers up to 50 Newton meters of torque, which will see you sail up even the steepest inclines with minimal effort.

Supporting the motor is the 500 Wh in-tube battery that offers up to 40 miles of real-world cycling. If this isn’t enough, you can double the range with the optional clip-on range extender. A 9-speed Shimano Alvio transmission offers great ratios even for tougher climbs, and the Shimano M200 hydraulic braking system with 160mm rotors on the front and rear helps you stop with precision.

Though it lacks a suspension fork, Trek has included a suspension seatpost so your rump doesn’t get tenderized while riding. Rounding the bike off are full fenders, a rack, and lights. Including rider weight, it’ll carry up to 300 lbs, which means you can tote a full load of groceries or everything you need for work.

Reasons to Buy

At this price point, the Verve+ 3 Lowstep is a very competitive e-bike. We like the overall looks and the components that’ll make this a dream to ride. Thanks to the way the motor and battery sit on the Verve+ 3, you’ll get a riding feel very similar to that of a traditional bike. The traditional bike elements on this e-bike are very good for the price, too.

If you’re planning to get very active, then go for the clip-on range extender battery and enjoy up to 80 miles of riding a day. You’ll soon sweat off any lard over a few weeks of doing that!

Things to Consider

Many e-bikes in the U.S. have throttles that can allow for motorcycle-style, sweat-free riding. As with all Trek e-bikes, this lacks a throttle. There are equivalently priced e-bikes like the Pedego City Commuter that have a similar look with a throttle, but many will lack a quality warranty like that offered by Trek.

Though it only comes with a 250W motor, the Verve+ 3 still offers a very reasonable 50 Nm of torque. In most city environments, you’ll find that nothing stands in your way on the highest pedal assist setting.

A small limitation is the speed of just 20 mph. There are Class 3 e-bikes out there that’ll get up to 28 mph — if you’re planning long-distance commutes, have a look to see if any better suit your needs.

With a very efficient drivetrain, the 40 miles we cite is about realistic for this electric bike. If you face a particularly hilly route or have to carry a large load, then the range will be impacted.

The bike’s efficiency comes in part from its road tires, 9-speed transmission, and the Bosch Active Plus motor system.

Lacking a suspension fork, this e-bike may make your arms tired. However, you’ll be sat in an upright, city bike position, and the 50c balloon tires will compensate for that. Under the Bontrager Boulevard seat is a suspension fork that’ll prevent you from getting aches in your rear.

As with all pedal assist-only e-bikes, you’ll likely have to keep your chain oiled and change it out every 1,000 miles or so. The brake pads will also need replacing every 500-1,000 miles.

Trek offers a lifetime warranty on its frames and rigid forks, as well as a two-year warranty on its alloy wheels. Bosch and Shimano offer warranties separate from this.

The Trek Verve+ 3 is the newest model in Trek’s lineup of hybrid electric ebikes. The Verve+ 3 is designed for around town riding, recreational city riding or extended commutes. Trek has long been an industry leader in both traditional bikes and ebikes with an extensive lineup of options for all different riders. The Verve+ 3 brings the comfort and components of the Verve+ 2 with a few key upgrades for extended range. Priced just under $3000, this motorized city ebike is patterned after the traditional 10-speed bikes we all grew up riding! It has a streamlined frame that doesn’t look heavy or cumbersome and boasts three different color options. You can get the Verve+ 3 in either a traditional high-step frame or opt for the step-thru frame which is easier to get on and off. Specs/Features

Battery One significant upgrade Trek made to the Verve+3 is the integrated Bosch PowerTube 500. This 500Wh battery is larger than the PowerPack 400 found on the Verve+2. This provides a bit more range as is, however, this bike is range boost compatible, so you can also add another battery to extend your range which is very beneficial on a commuter bike.

The integrated battery on the Verve+3 is one of the first things you’ll notice about this bike. You can get between 30 – 75 miles of range depending on your weight, assist level, cargo and terrain. Trek has incorporated what they call the “Removable Internal Battery” (RIB) which features a side-mount system on the right side of the bike so you can unlock it on the left and pull it out on the right via a handle on the top of the battery. Other internal batteries can be very difficult to unlock and remove — and many don’t have a handle — so once you pull the battery out, you have to be careful to handle it without dropping it. The handle and side locking system on the Verve+ 3 is a thoughtful innovation that makes removing the battery substantially easier.

The Bosch PowerTube system has several advantages over the Bosch PowerPack 400 used on the Verve+2:

This internal battery allows the weight to be positioned lower while maintaining the step-thru frame design. On the Verve+2 step-thru, the battery makes it harder to get your leg up and over the bike without kicking the battery pack.
The battery is hidden — for a stealthy ebike look
The battery cover is matched to the paint for a streamlined design
There is room on the frame tubing for an additional battery or bosses for a bottle cage, frame bag, pump, etc.
The battery is protected since it is internal which reduces the chance of your battery being damaged or disconnecting from the frame in a fall.
Can be charged right on the bike without being removed; can also be removed without tools while on the trail.
All Bosch battery packs are UL Certified for safety and backed by a large, well-established corporation.
Has a handle on the top and inserts on the side rather than top of the downtube for convenience.

A few drawbacks to the internal battery:

Not quite as interchangeable as an external battery that can be easily replaced or swapped out
The paint-matched battery is harder to replace or repair if damaged since it needs to be matched to the color and design of the frame

A few facts about this display:

This display is not removable, so you can’t take it off the bike. It is subject to the elements should you leave your bike out (in the rain, sun, etc.).
The display fits seamlessly into the handlebar system — it is not overly obtrusive or obvious for those who like to maintain a low-profile ebike presence.
Despite being relatively compact, the grayscale LCD is easy to read with large numbers and letters, it can be seen in various light conditions.
This is a great display for those who want basic readouts without a lot of extra menus and metrics.
One of the sub menus for the Purion is range estimate which you can reach by holding the – key once it is turned on, this provides dynamic feedback about how far the ebike system can go based on the last mile of riding and current battery capacity
Since this is a smaller display it may be difficult for those who have limited vision
It doesn’t have extended menus and a full screen readout for various metrics and stats. You have to toggle through several screens to find what you are looking for. Not as extensive as comparable display computers.
5-bar readout isn’t as precise as a 10-bar readout or even battery percentage.

Brakes Trek has outfitted the Verve+3 with Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes. These provide good stopping power. The brake levers are easy to reach and responsive, so riders of all abilities will feel safe on the Verve+3.

Fenders Fenders are often an optional upgrade on e-bikes, but Trek includes them standard on Verve+3. These are plastic fenders which reduce bike weight and also won’t rust or corrode. The elongated rear fender runs down underneath the rear rack to protect both the rider and any cargo from mud splatter. Occasionally plastic fenders can crack or rattle, so we recommend keeping the fender stay in position and replacing fenders when they get cracked or worn.

Fork The Verve+ 3 has an alloy rigid fork. This doesn’t absorb as much shock as would a steel fork or suspension system, but you don’t really need it on the Verve+ 3. This bike is designed for street use with narrower tires and an upright design. We don’t recommend off-road or rough terrain for the Verve+ 3. However, Trek has outfitted this bike with a suspension seat post which provides a lot of rider comfort from bumps and dips in the road.

Frame The Verve+ 3 has an alpha gold aluminum frame with the removable integrated battery system. The frame comes in two styles: low step and high step, and two color options. You can get it in teal or black in the low step frame and it only comes in black for the high step model.

We love that Trek has really dialed in the sizing options on the Verve+ 3. With sizes that range from small to medium and large. Size breakdown is as follows:

Small: 5’1” – 5’5”
Medium: 5’5” – 5’8”
Large: 5’8” – 6’1”

The medium frame weighs about 55 pounds and all frames will support up to 300 pounds of rider and cargo weight.

Grips and Saddle The Verve+ 3 has ergonomic handles that provide a comfortable hand hold. Ergonomic grips are designed to reduce hand fatigue on longer rides. These are Bontrager locking grips in black on both frame colors. The saddle is a Bontrager Boulevard that provides just a touch of added width for comfort. The suspension seat post helps increase rider comfort with 31mm of suspension.

Pedals These are flat, Bontrager Satellite City pedals with non slip rubber cleats along the perimeter of the pedal to hold your shoe from slipping. You can wear any athletic shoe with these pedals.

Kickstand The kickstand is adjustable and rear-mounted to avoid pedal lock. The alloy kickstand is strong but lightweight. Kickstands are a must on a city commuter bike. You can keep your bike upright while you run inside a market or cafe even if there’s not a bike rack to hold it up.

Rear Rack The Verve+ 3 includes a standard rear rack that hovers over the rear wheel for a bit of extra cargo. This isn’t the largest rack and it isn’t a solid surface, so you could attach some bags here but attachments may be limited. Make sure you don’t have a backpack or duffel bag with straps that could hang down and rub against the tire. It is nice to have the extra option though, especially on an urban commuter bike.

Tires The Verve+ 3 uses Bontrager E6 Hard-Case tires that are 700x50c (29” high). These are designed for street riding with a narrower profile and just a touch of tread. They do have reflective sidewall stripes which help ebikers be more easily seen in traffic. The 29” wheel will feel a bit large to some riders at first, but this raises your attack angle and makes it easier to roll over road debris and other surfaces. The low-step frame helps the bike not feel like it’s too high due to the raised wheelbase, so even for smaller riders the wheels feel well-proportioned. These tires are puncture resistant and should handle most road surfaces just fine without unnecessary flats. We always recommend keeping a few spare tubes on hand for quick tube changes when needed.

Summary Review / Where to Buy

Trek has introduced the Verve+ 3 — which is the upgraded version of their popular Verve+ 2 model — with some impressive features that extend power and range. The Verve+ 3 battery is tucked into frame so it isn’t in your way when getting on and off the bike. The battery is easily removable — it locks in and out and doesn’t require tools — and it is color matched to the frame for a seamless design. There are also bosses and a port on the downtube for a second external battery. This dual battery system makes it so riders can go longer and farther without having to stop to charge or replace the battery. The Verve+ 3 will go 25 – 45 miles on a single battery and double that if you upgrade to the dual system. This is a city commuter / urban bike that is well suited for around town riding. It includes front and rear fenders, front and rear integrated lights, a kickstand, reflective stripes on the tires, a comfort-enhancing suspension seat post, and wide tires with a high attack angle for smooth riding.

The Verve+ 3 features an Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, 250 watt Bosch Active Line Plus motor with 50Nm of torque and 9-speed Shimano drivetrain to help you get up hills easier. The hydraulic disc brakes provide good stopping power and the puncture resistant tires are 29” high for increased speed and minimal rolling resistance. The suspension seat post, soft saddle and ergo grips also keep you comfortable while riding.

Trek bikes can be ordered online directly from the manufacturer or you can find Trek ebikes in any number of retailers worldwide. This gives buyers the ability to see, test ride, and size out the perfect bike for them. The Verve+ 3 is currently on pre-order and listed at $2999 for the integrated battery system. This is a safe bike that is a good option for city riders who want extended range, an easily removable integrated battery, and extra safety features for riding in traffic.

The article has a mistake. It says the Verve is a class 2 bike but it is actually a class 1 bike. It is too bad that it doesn’t have a throttle. A throttle would be very helpful in city riding.

Most riders will find the Trek Verve+ 2 a little underpowered, especially compared to some of the best budget electric bikes from the likes of Rad Power, Juiced Bikes, and Aventon. On the other hand, for those who think those ebikes are somehow outre and want something subtler, this mild-mannered ebike may be just the thing.

Designed to be a daily commuter and weekend daytripper, the Trek Verve+ 2 doesn't make any radical design statements or excessive power moves. This road bike is for those who want a no-hassle, low-maintenance easy rider with reliable components. Indeed, the low-step version of the Verve+ 2 we tested even makes it easy to climb aboard.

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Price and availability

Founded in the '70s in Wisconsin, Trek has a reputation for solid construction and reliability — a reputation for which the company hopes shoppers are willing to pay a premium. Sold through retailers, Trek offers an extensive line of bikes, ranging from $13,000 carbon fiber road racers to full-suspension mountain bikes, as well as a full line of ebikes.

The $2,849.99 Verve+ 2 sits somewhere in the middle of the company's ebike line. Compare, for example, Trek's Domane+ ALR, which is a more serious distance road bike that starts at $5,049.99 and the Townie Go 8D EQ Step-Over bike for Sunday beach bathers that starts at $2,449.99.

Trek's bikes are not available directly online but are rather ordered through retailers. The benefit is that you won't have to skin your knuckles assembling it yourself.

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Design

The Trek Verve+ 2 is designed for casual riders and commuters. It's available in sizes from XS to L, the largest of which will accommodate riders just over 6 feet tall. The bike has an aluminum frame with steel forks and wide straight handlebars for commuter comfort. You won't find mountain-bike style front shocks on the Verve+ 2, but a foam Bontrager seat with a suspension seat post takes the edge off of potholes.

Trek also includes a neat chain guard that runs nearly the full length and ensures you're not going to get a nice pair of pants or skirt mussied up in the gears. Furthermore, the essential power and brake wiring is fed through the down tube to keep things tidy and reduce the chances of damage. For convenience, front and rear quick release wheels are included.

To provide power assist, the Verve+ 2 uses a Bosch Active Line 250-watt, mid-drive motor to deliver smooth support and eliminate surprise surges of power. The bike has a top pedal assist speed of 20 mph and includes a Bosch controller and a 9-speed Shimano drivetrain with a 400Wh removable battery. Rounding out the feature list are hydraulic disc brakes, puncture-resistant tires, a kickstand and front and rear lights, plus metal fenders.

The Verve+ 2 also comes with a rear rack that uses the Racktime clip-on system, which makes it easy to use with compatible panniers and bags. One missing item: a bell or horn is not included, though it does have a headlight and taillight.

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Performance

The Trek Verve+ 2 offers smooth electric pedal assist performance and predictable handling. Its relatively light weight (52 pounds vs. 70 pounds for some ebikes) also makes it more maneuverable so riders will feel like they're in control of the bike — rather than vice versa.

Although there's no full-throttle mode, on city streets the mid-drive motor, which uses a torque sensor, is very responsive. The instant you apply pressure to the pedals you'll receive some electric assistance. That makes it more seamless than many rear-hub motor models, which tend to suffer from a delay or turbo lag. Consequently, the Trek Verve+ 2 helps you start off from a dead stop, and it's whisper quiet compared to rear motor designs. To bring everything to a halt, the bike's hydraulic brakes are responsive without being too touchy.

Taking the Trek for trips in the countryside presented more of a challenge. The mild power assist even in the top Turbo mode may feel insufficient in helping me climb hills. And if you get caught in the wrong gear on an incline, you'll find yourself getting up out of the saddle. So if you're looking for help on the hills in San Francisco or Asheville, look elsewhere.

One advantage of the Verve+ 2 is that you can use it in full manual mode. Electric support is not necessary. Compare that to big gravel bikes like those from Aventon or Biktrix, which are so heavy you'll never want to be stuck somewhere without power.

The Bosch controller for the electrics displays speed, range, amount of electric assistance selected, and the battery level. There's also a button for walk mode, but you're unlikely to need it unless you're pushing the bike up a steep hill.

We also found that the front headlamp could be brighter for daytime visibility (initially, we didn't realize it was on).

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Battery life and range

The Bosch controller on the Verve + 2 is a basic LCD display that allows you to choose between four power assist modes: Turbo, Sport, Tour, and Eco. As the nomenclature might suggest, you'll get the most range out of Eco mode--up to 60 miles, according to Trek--and then in descending order less distance the more electric push you ask for with Turbo mode rated for 25 miles.

Because we didn't find the lower power modes much of a help on hills, we primarily used Turbo mode during our weeks of testing. Facing significant hills and with a 170-pound rider aboard, we got an average of 23 miles out of Turbo mode. That's a reasonable result, given the challenging terrain. But depending on where you ride, how much you weigh, and how much electric assistance you prefer, your mileage may vary.

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Competition

If you're looking for an ebike for between $1,400 and $1,900, there are a raft of choices from reputable but relative newcomers, including the Rad Power Rad City5 Plus , and the Charge Bikes City , both of which cost $1,799. In this end of the market, you'll get more power for your money, but the bikes typically use a less-desirable rear hub motor and are heavier, intended for gravel and occasional off-road use.

If you're considering the more suburban Trek Verve+2 and have the $2,800 to spare, there are plenty of choices from other established brands. Cannondale, for example, offers the Adventure Neo 4 for the same price and boasting nearly the identical powertrain and feature set. However, Cannondale's model has more style than the Trek bike, concealing the battery as part of its downtube, for example.

And if you want a truly no-fuss, sophisticated ebike commuter, our first choice is still the Gazelle Ultimate C380 HMB, although it's considerably more expensive ($4,249).

Trek Verve+ 2 Ebike review: Bottom line

It's difficult to make a value case for the Trek Verve+ 2. Among the best electric bikes and best budget electric bikes , there are many available with comparable abilities and much more power — for a lot less money. On the other hand, lighter casual riders will find the Verve+ 2 more manageable and maneuverable than many of those less expensive models. Furthermore, Trek is sold through traditional brick-and-mortar retailers versus models that are only sold directly online, so buyers don't have to face the annoyance of putting the bike together themselves.

How We Test E-Bikes

Our full electric bike reviews, things to consider when buying an e-bike, how to buy a used e-bike.

Our experienced bike test team evaluates each model included here on its overall quality, safety features, handling, motor, and battery life. We also assess whether the components and features add to the overall quality of the ride. Bicycling editors tested these bikes on local roads, commuting to and from work, using them to stock up on groceries and beer, and running their batteries down to see how long they last on one charge.

Deputy editor Tara Seplavy , the author of this article, also worked in bicycle product development for two decades and led product management for major bike brands. Plus, she commutes to Bicycling's headquarters daily on an e-bike.

While we rode most of the e-bikes in this story, sometimes we can’t get our hands on a great electric bike. In those cases, we rely on the expertise of our test team, interviews with product managers, and rigorous research to compare the bikes’ value and performance against similar models we’ve tested.

Aventon Level.2 Electric Bike

Although we loved the original Level , its update is an improvement in practically every way. A smoother ride than its predecessor, it sports a new torque sensor that evenly distributes power, resulting in a more natural ride feel that’s easier to control and manage. Its update also adds visibility, not just with integrated lights, but a full color, easy-to-read display. The Level.2 isn’t just one of our favorite e-bikes—at its price, comfort level, and premium features, we think it just might be the best.

Our only gripe is with its Zoom Aria suspension fork, which can’t handle bigger bumps, though the lockout feature works well. When it hits these large bumps, the fork's rebound is unpredictable and rapid, and it tends to bottom out. Still, if you need an e-bike for doing just about anything, from commuting to work to zipping around pavement on the weekend, the Aventon Level.2 is our top nomination.

Aventon Aventure.2 Electric Bike

Aventon has been on a roll with its new models and continuous revisions to existing platforms. The brand’s update to its Aventure fat-tire e-bike is no exception. At first glance, there are few significant visual differences between the original Aventure and this second-generation model. However once you ride it, the small changes add up and feel huge.

Compared to the original Aventure, this second gen rides much more smoothly. The new torque sensor allows more control over the acceleration of Aventure’s 750W rear hub motor; lighter-weight testers found the previous model to have too much torque, but the latest Aventure remedied this fault. Additional updates include a new head unit interface, integrated turn signals, a front light, a rear rack, and fenders for keeping clean.

The Aventure.2 is an excellent fat-tire e-bike for commutes, especially on snowy days and gravel pathways. Off-roading, it excels on doubletrack trails, but with this burly bike’s weight and components, it has limited functionality on singletrack and more aggressive mountain trails.

Aventon Ramblas eMTB

The Aventon Ramblas is a category-defining hardtail e-MTB that impressed us during trail testing. Its trail-forward components include a 1x12 SRAM Eagle drivetrain that can handle most climbs, powerful 4-piston SRAM brakes, a solidly stiff 35mm RockShox fork, a comfy dropper seatpost, and cushy 2.4-inch wide tires. These are unmatched by any other hardtail e-MTB, especially given its price.

"The Ramblas has no true competitors for comparatively priced, trail-ready e-MTBs," says Seplavy. "Every so often a bike comes along that entirely shifts the bicycle market—the Ramblas might do that for mountain biking. And once more bike brands see and ride the Ramblas, I expect several will soon follow Aventon’s lead with sharp-priced, trail-capable hardtail e-MTBs."

Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus Electric Bike

Brawny, big, and bold, the RadRover 6 Plus is powerful at its best and sluggish at its worst. With its 750W rear hub, 4-inch-wide tires, and RST spring suspension fork (with 60mm of travel), it’s cushy and stable enough to tackle potholes as well as dirt, rocks, and snow.

Compared to its predecessor, an updated display and solid hydraulic disc brakes make the RadRover 6 Plus a more comfortable and relaxed ride. It also comes in at just over $1,ooo making it reasonably priced.

With its extreme weight of 74 pounds (without a rack), we wouldn’t dare to roll this thing upstairs. If you need a do-it-all bike to help get you to and from work or the grocery store and frequently battle the elements while doing it, or if you have a lot of land you’d like to tear up, the RadRover 6 is your beast. But anyone living in a small space might have trouble handling this steed.

Lectric One eBike

A big reason to consider Lectric’s One, according to Test Editor Dan Chabanov, is Pinion, a German brand that manufactures high-end and fully enclosed gearbox units—sort of like an internally geared hub, he notes, except mounted in the bottom bracket.

Most consumers don’t know about the brand, explains Chabanov, because Pinion products are typically found on very pricey and niche bikes. Having this system on a $2,000 commuter e-bike, he notes, is very exciting, especially since it’s a part usually reserved for bikes triple that price.

Chabanov was impressed with not only the Pinion system’s smoothness and precision, but the hub motor as well. While the improved cadence sensor was better than others he’s used, Chabanov notes it was still very much a cadence sensor. “Like most cadence sensor-equipped bikes, the One feels disconnected from the motor,” he says. “This feeling is from a combination of lag (though very slight in this case) and because the force put into the pedals does not relate to the motor’s output. Both factors result in a slightly unnatural motor response.”

Still, it didn’t take Chabanov long to get used to how the One delivers its motor assist. The One is an ideal option for riders who seek a dependable, low-maintenance, all-weather commuter bike with the bells and whistles of a bike that usually costs much more.

Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser Electric Bike

Sometimes, you just want a classic cruiser to take out on the weekends. And if that casualness is your desired style, the Ride1Up’s Cafe Cruiser is your best bet. Strapped with a built-in rack, front and rear lights, a 750W motor, hydraulic disc brakes, a decent suspension fork, and 3-inch-wide tires, this upright bike is stable enough for newer e-riders, and with an added passenger kit , the little one, too.

Our testing found that the bike had plenty of oomph to climb short hills despite its weight and laidback geometry. But, like several wide-tire bikes, it has some handling issues. It’s capable of speeds up to 28 mph (and 20 mph using the throttle), which is more than enough power to get you where you need to be.

Ride1Up Portola Electric Bike

Ride1Up’s new Portola folding bike packs a lot of punch for how small it is. Folding down to a compact 19- x 29.5- x 33-inch footprint, this bike features a 750W rear hub motor with 65Nm torque, hydraulic disc brakes, a Shimano 8-speed drivetrain, and an integrated rear rack with 130-pound carrying capacity.

For less than $1,000, this is a great deal for bimodal commuters, RVers, vanlifers, or folks living in a small apartment. The standard 10.4Ah battery has a claimed range of 20 to 40 miles. Or bump the range up to 45 miles with an optional 13.4Ah battery for an additional $100.

Specialized Globe Haul ST Electric Bike

If you need to haul it all, go with our 2023 Bike of the Year : Specialized’s Globe Haul ST. With a carrying capacity of a whopping 419 pounds, it’s good for a range of riding tasks, from grabbing groceries to dropping Fido off at doggy daycare.

Specialized designed this bike with the average commuter in mind, motivating riders to swap those short- and medium-distance car trips with a bicycle instead. The result is a well-designed short-tail cargo bike with wide 20- x 3.5-inch tires that can eat bumps while keeping you stable and low to the ground. It’s also a blast to ride.

Our test editor Dan Chabanov says it feels much more like a traditional bike than a souped-up e-cargo, which is to say, it’s actually fun. “If you haven’t ridden an e-cargo bike, you might take this for granted,” he says. “But the reality is that even some of the more compact e-cargo bike options out there often don’t ride like a typical bike, or worse, they simply ride poorly. As a cyclist, one of the Haul ST’s most enamoring traits is how much it rides like a ‘normal’ bike. Well, that and the ability to carry a week’s worth of groceries on it.”

Cannondale Treadwell Neo 2 Electric Bike

We’re fans of the unpowered Treadwell for its clean looks and upright rider position. It’s not quite a hybrid but also not a foot-forward-style cruiser. The line is comprised of unique, practical bikes for city commuting or riding around town.

The Treadwell Neo 2 improves on this by offering electric assistance without a big weight penalty. This makes for a light and zippier riding bike at a low price. A Class 1 rear hub motor moves the Treadwell along smoothly at up to 20 mph with pedal-assisted power. The 7-speed drivetrain and a wide-range cassette help you get up long hills, and the Maxxis 650b tires roll fast on pavement.

Velotric T1

Hybrid bikes combine elements of road bikes (lightweight frame, 700c wheels) and mountain bikes (flat handlebar, wide-range gearing, and sometimes suspension). These bikes offer a compelling combination of traits that can make hybrids the best choice for many riders’ commuting, fitness, or leisure needs.

One of Seplavy’s top choices is Velotric’s T1. Sporty and quick, the bike handles much like some road bikes. Credit that snappy feel, she says, to the T1’s 350W rear hub motor and road bike-like geometry, but also from its weight at 36 pounds.

Velotric packs plenty of tech features into the T1, too. There’s a torque sensor for a smooth and natural pedaling feel and a light-sensing headlamp that turns on when it gets dark. For security, there is a fingerprint lock on the bike plus GPS tracking and theft alert via Velotric‘s app.

Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 Step-Through Electric Bike

Specialized’s Turbo Vado 4.0 is smart and comfortable, with solid brakes, a terrific fork, a sleek design, and a clean iPhone companion app. We’ve ridden a lot of e-bikes over the years, and the Specialized Turbo models consistently test amongst the best in all categories.

The brand puts a ton of development time into its Turbo series e-bikes by refining the motor tune and carefully selecting parts. This work pays off with best-in-class ride quality. If you have hesitated to try an e-bike because you think it won’t feel like your favorite non-assist bike, try a Specialized Turbo. You’ll quickly become a convert.

Specialized offers the bike at several price levels between $3,250 and $5,500. You can purchase Turbo Vados with traditional or step-through frame styles, derailleur or internal hub drivetrain configurations, and several color offerings.

Bluejay Premier Edition

If you’re looking for a fun bike for summer rides around town or to the beach, Bluejay’s Premier Edition should be on your list. Bluejay combines elements of classic cruisers and townie bikes into a stylish electric bike. We found the bike ideal for trips to the farmers’ market, morning coffee, or weekend brunch, and rides with the kids or friends.

A 350-watt Bafang mid-drive motor (powered by a removable 550Wh battery) is at the heart of the Premier Edition. It uses a torque sensor for smooth pedal response and has a maximum assisted speed of 20mph. Shifting duties are handled by Shimano’s low maintenance 8-speed Alfine internal hub.

Bluejay sells this model in two sizes (small for riders 5-feet-5-inches and under, and large for riders 5-feet-6-inches and taller) and 15 fun and poppy colors (including Luxe Camel, Hot Pink, Citrus Orange).

While the Bluejay is a little pricier than some other e-bike options, it comes fully loaded with front and rear racks, lights, fenders, a bell, and an adjustable stem. The rear rack can accommodate up to 55 pounds of cargo and is compatible with a Thule Yepp Maxi child seat (sold separately).

Trek Verve+ 3 Lowstep

Seniors come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s difficult to recommend just one e-bike model for every type of rider. But based on conversations with Bicycling members and our experience working in bike shops and at cycling events, many older riders seek a few common traits in an electric bike. They want something that’s easy to get on and off, simple to use, low maintenance, and smooth riding.

Trek’s Verve+ 3 Lowstep checks off each of those boxes. The Verve+ is powered by the trusted and smooth-riding Bosch Active Plus motor system. The 250W mid-drive motor has 50Nm of torque and powers the rider up to 20 mph. This Trek also features a wide-range Shimano 9-speed drivetrain for getting up hills. Powerful and reliable Shimano hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping duties.

The Verve+ 3 Lowstep uses a step-through style frame (it is lower than many other e-bikes) that makes getting on or off the bike easy. It also features a suspension seatpost to smooth out potholes and bumps on the road, and an adjustable height and rise step to dial in your riding position.

A Few E-Bike Terms to Know

Measured in Newton meters (or Nm), torque is a rotational measurement of force—and the number to pay attention to when you want an idea of an e-bike motor’s output. More torque means more power off the line and more boost to your pedaling.

The heavier the bike, the more torque it needs. Lighter road bikes typically have 30 to 40 Nm of torque, and trail and cargo models (generally) have at least 80 Nm. Most commuter bikes fall somewhere in between.

The size of an e-bike’s battery is measured in watt-hours (or Wh). This measurement represents the energy stored in the battery and how many watts it can deliver each hour. The higher the number, the longer the range, but the faster you go, the faster you drain the battery.

So, if a 504Wh battery paired with a 500W motor gives you one hour of ride time at the highest assist, riding at about half that power will double your range.

Locking Battery

Many e-bike brands seamlessly integrate batteries to make the bike look sleeker (and more like a traditional non-assist bike). Most batteries lock to the bike and come with a key that lets you unlock and remove it, which serves multiple purposes: You can remove the battery and charge it off the bike, plus a locked battery deters (and hopefully prevents) a thief from stealing it. And an e-bike with the battery removed is safer for hauling on a bike rack and lighter for carrying up steps.

Stability and Control

Since e-bikes can maintain higher speeds for longer than standard bikes, you want extra control when riding. Wider tires provide better traction and the freedom to leave the pavement with little penalty, and a suspension fork will help tame some of the rougher roads you might explore. Good disc brakes are a must, too, for slowing a heavy bike at high speed. This is not a place to skimp.

Integrated Lights

Some e-bikes have an integrated lighting system that turns on when you power up the bike. While this is a great feature, it’s not a deal-breaker if your bike doesn’t come equipped this way. It’s just as easy to attach your own since so many great bike lights are available.

Warranty and Service

E-bikes need regular maintenance and repair to stay in good working condition. Because they’re heavier and go faster than non-assist bicycles, e-bikes often require more regular service on parts like brakes, tires, and drivetrain components. We recommend having a good relationship with a local bike shop experienced in e-bike repair to keep your equipment running smoothly.

E-bikes use electronics for their motors, batteries, and displays. These parts are often proprietary to bike brands or even specific e-bike models, making replacement more difficult than parts on non-electric bicycles. Make sure to use the correct electronic replacement parts to avoid damaging your e-bike (or it catching fire).

Established brands usually (but not always) have a good supply of these parts for replacement, even for years after a bike goes out of production. Bosch and Shimano are two e-bike motor manufacturers with some of the most compatibility between bikes and stock parts for previous generations of systems.

Look for e-bikes from brands that offer at least a one-year warranty on electronic components (many brands’ warranties are longer) and make items like replacement batteries for your bike. These parts are usually not cheap (sometimes up to half the cost of a new bike), but it’s the difference between having an e-bike that can be repaired or becomes a bicycle-shaped paperweight if something goes wrong.

Certification

Following a dramatic increase in fires caused by the lithium-ion batteries used in electric bikes, there is a push from local officials, regulatory agencies , and advocacy groups across the U.S. for improved safety certification of e-bikes, batteries, and motor units. On September 16, 2023, a New York City law went into effect requiring that any e-bike sold in the city “has been certified by an accredited testing laboratory for compliance with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standard 2849”. And in November 2023, Amazon announced it ceased sales of illegal batteries to New Yorkers.

However, just because something is marketed as UL 2849 compliant, tested to UL 2849, or even “certified to UL 2849” does not mean it is UL Safety Certified. Ibrahim Jilani, UL’s Global Director of Consumer Technology, notes: “Certification is always earned by a manufacturer and not a given when they undergo a product submittal. The UL Mark, or any authorized certification mark, can only be issued upon successful demonstration of meeting the requirements of the safety standard.” You can find UL’s updated list of products Certified to UL 2849 here .

We contacted many e-bike brands on this topic. Most companies informed us they are working toward the certification process. So, expect the list of certified e-bikes to grow in the coming months. If owning a UL 2849-certified bike is important to you, ask the brand from which you plan to purchase it for proof of certification. Conversion Kits

Several manufacturers offer kits to add pedal assistance to a non-electric bike. We purchased a few popular conversion kits, fitted them to bikes, and rode them. We do not currently recommend these kits for use. While converting an old bike to an electric assist sounds good in theory, it rarely makes practical sense. Plus, it can lead to rider injury or failure of the bike.

Manufacturers do not design non-electric bikes to accommodate the extra weight and forces incurred when adding an e-bike motor, battery, and control equipment. This puts more stress on the bicycle frame and other components and can lead to breakage or failure of the bike.

Selecting most conversion kits requires knowing fitment details about your bike and might require specialized tools for installation. Many do not have a straightforward installation process, and it can be a challenging project for novice mechanics. If you want a shop to install a conversion kit, check with the shop before purchasing it. Since most non-electric bikes are not engineered to accommodate electric conversions, many shops will not install these kits.

Many economical e-bikes do not cost much more than the total price of a conversion kit plus the installation cost. We recommend buying a purpose-built e-bike for the best and safest experience.

The Three Classes of E-Bikes

After determining which style of bike is right for you, the next consideration is which class of e-bike best fits your needs. In the U.S., there are three e-bike classifications. These are defined by the type of assist and how fast the motor will propel you. Most electric bikes are defined as class 1 or 3. Class 1 bikes have a motor (max 750W) that assists while pedaling up to 20 mph. Class 3 (sometimes known as “speed pedelec”) can have up to a 750W (aka 1-horsepower) motor but can assist you up to 28 mph. Both are allowed in most states and cities without needing a license.

Class 2 models have become more popular with riders, especially at lower prices. These models have a throttle that can propel a bike up to 20 mph without needing continuous pedaling.

Some bikes blur the lines. Aventon’s popular Pace 500 , for example, is technically a Class 3 e-bike in that it reaches speeds up to 28 mph, but it also has a throttle that tops out at 20 mph (the maximum legal speed for a throttle).

Good quality e-bikes can cost a lot of money; purchasing a pre-owned bike is one way to save some cash and get a better model. If you want to shop for a used e-bike in person, some bicycle stores offer refurbished units. Shopping in person allows you to check the integrity and condition of the bike before you buy it. When purchasing from a shop, make sure that the retailer is experienced with e-bike service and that the bike includes the proper charger and battery.

If purchasing a used e-bike directly from another owner on a third-party site, it’s wise to have the bike inspected by an experienced e-bike shop or mechanic before handing over your money. E-bikes experience higher wear-and-tear than non-assist bicycles, and many e-bikes use proprietary parts or require special tools to service or update software.

With the boom in e-bike sales, a few websites have recently sprung up selling reconditioned and certified e-bikes. Often, these e-bikes have low mileage or were sales floor samples at shops—some are even brand new or are new old stock of a previous model year. While it costs more than purchasing from an individual seller, buying a used bike from these sites usually means you have some sort of warranty on your e-bike and ensures that it was inspected properly.

Gazelle Arroyo vs Trek Verve +1

I am looking to buy my first E bike, Trek Verve +1 or Gazelle Arroyo. Both were very comfortable to me. I live in a hilly neighborhood and have a small dog that I would like to put in a carrier on the back of the bike. I like the upright position of both bikes. I’m 5’4 and weigh about 112 pounds. Just wondering which would be easier on my knees to get up the hills. Thanks!

A Trek Verve +3 would be better. A more powerful motor and bigger battery than a Verve +1. A Verve +1 would probably work for you because of your light weight though as long as you aren’t going far. I’d guess the battery would get you about 25 to 30 miles. The Gazelle Arroyo I found info on is a C5. If that’s what you’re looking at it’s a lot more bike than the aTrek. A much stronger motor and bigger battery. Looks like it costs more too. Of the two bikes the Gazelle specs out much better.

I tried an Aventon Soltera. I preferred the feel of the trek and gazelle, but the throttle was handy.
