Hotel Business – With TravelClick Acquisition, Amadeus Expands Its Reach

' src=

Amadeus’s presence in the hospitality sector has grown following the purchase of TravelClick for $1.52 billion in August.

“Hospitality IT offers a $7 billion addressable market that we believe offers tremendous potential for Amadeus and we regard as a strategic priority for growth,” said Francisco Perez-Lozao, SVP of hospitality, Amadeus. “TravelClick brings us a portfolio of powerful products, complementary to our own; access to the strategically important mid-chain and independent market; and a global team with great expertise and experience, especially in sales and account management.

“This deal marks the next stage in TravelClick’s incredible journey of success in delivering groundbreaking solutions for hoteliers,” said Larry Kutscher, CEO of TravelClick. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team or more excited about the impact our combined companies will have on the hospitality industry as we begin to deliver the next generation of innovation for hoteliers.”

It’s all about strategy. Pérez-Lozao explained that now was the right time to strike a deal as the company looks to address the next segments in the hospitality marketplace, which include mid-large chains and independents.

WNBA teams will travel on chartered flights for the next 2 seasons, the league says

Players and staff of the New York Liberty WNBA basketball team wait to board buses at Harry Reid International Airport, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, in Las Vegas.

For the next two seasons, WNBA teams will begin traveling to away games on chartered flights, after primarily relying on commercial planes since the league's inception nearly three decades ago.

The change will be gradually phased in at the start of the 2024 season, which kicks off May 14, the WNBA announced Thursday .

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of a full charter program as soon as practical for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, a testament to the continued growth of the WNBA," WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. "We have been hard at work to transform the business and build a sustainable economic model to support charter flights for the long term."

Before, teams could travel on chartered flights during the postseason and during the regular season if they had games back-to-back.

The league is partnering with Delta Air Lines to carry out the expanded program. It said it raised $75 million in 2022 for "marketing, digital transformation, globalization, and fan engagement."

Hall of Fame college coach Dawn Staley Reflects on the state of women's basketball.

"It's exciting to add the WNBA to our prestigious roster of sports charter partners as we participate in this historic advancement in women's professional sports," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said. "We're looking forward to providing the WNBA with the welcoming, caring and elevated service that Delta people have made famous."

Women's basketball has had tremendous growth in the past year, driven by phenoms like Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark. Reese helped lead her LSU team to the championship in 2023 against Iowa, which was led by Clark. This past year, Clark became the NCAA's all-time basketball scorer , male or female, and whose games shattered records for attendance and TV ratings.

Since Reese and Clark have been drafted , to the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, respectively, ticket sales have skyrocketed, with some teams having to move venues to meet the demand. The season-opening games, including Clark's professional debut, will be streamed on Disney+ on May 14, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Several players reacted positively to the news.

"I'm really excited that the younger players will not have to experience everything that we experienced, and the ones before us had to experience with that," Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner said in a press conference. "I always said that safety is a number one key. Our safety should have always been high priority."

'I did not feel like a human': Brittney Griner tells NPR about detention in Russia

Interview highlights

'i did not feel like a human': brittney griner tells npr about detention in russia.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison after she was detained at an airport there for packing hashish oil in her travel bag, which she says was an accident. The Biden administration was able to negotiate her release.

She added that while being accessible to fans can be a positive experience, it also makes them more vulnerable to threats.

After Griner's return to the U.S., she was confronted by right-wing YouTuber Alex Stein in a Dallas airport, asking her a series of questions, such as, "Do you hate America?"

"I'm thankful at whatever point that is that it happens and occurs, it'll be great for us," Clark said. "It'll make recovery easier, it'll make travel easier. It just makes life a lot easier for a lot of people, but also it's just something that a lot of people have deserved for years and years now. So, I'm just very fortunate to come to this league and have that opportunity the first year I'm here."

"I'm excited," Las Vegas Aces forward Alysha Clark said . "Whatever it took for it to get there, it's here, and I'm looking forward to it. It's been a long time coming. It's been something that affects how we show up on the court. It affects the ability to be able to rest and get more rest, so I think you'll see a difference in the players as we're out here on the floor this season."

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

A U.S. Army sergeant stationed in Korea has been detained in Russia, accused of stealing from a woman, two Pentagon officials said Monday.

Staff Sgt. Gordon D. Black was arrested on May 2 in Vladivostok. It is unclear how he got there but he was in the process of changing duty stations from Korea to Fort Cavazos (Ft. Hood) in the U.S. He was not there on official travel.

The soldier's mother, Melody Jones, said he was in Russia visiting his girlfriend.

"Please do not torture him [or] hurt him," Melody Jones said when asked about her message to the Russians.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the U.S. is "aware of this case," but he said he couldn't "say much about it right now."  NBC News first reported that a soldier had been detained in Russia over the weekend.

The U.S. has long been trying to secure the release of two other Americans who it considers to be wrongfully detained in Russia.

Paul Whelan, a former Marine, has been imprisoned in Russia since 2018 after he was accused of spying, which the U.S. and his family have said are sham charges. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2020.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was jailed in March 2023 on espionage charges, which the U.S., his family and employer all insist are baseless. He is awaiting trial.

The State Department said in December that Russia rejected a "significant" proposal for their release.

The U.S. has warned Americans for months not to travel to Russia and had urged U.S. citizens living there to depart immediately. An  updated travel advisory  in September said Americans traveling to the country could be singled out "for detention by Russian government security officials" and the U.S. Embassy had "limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia."

"When a U.S. citizen is detained abroad, consular officers seek to aid him or her with all appropriate assistance. We take seriously our commitment to assist U.S. citizens abroad and provide all appropriate assistance," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement Monday that confirmed a U.S. citizen had been detained in Russia.

The spokesperson reiterated that U.S. citizens in Russia or traveling to the country should leave immediately.

"We reiterate our strong warnings about the danger posed to U.S. citizens inside the Russian Federation," the spokesperson said.

U.S. Accuses Russia of Using Chemical Weapons in Ukraine

The State Department said Russia had used chloropicrin, a poison gas widely used during World War I, against Ukrainian forces, an act that would violate a global ban signed by Moscow.

Constant Méheut reported from Kyiv, Ukraine, and Marc Santora from eastern Ukraine.

The United States has accused Russia of using chemical weapons, including poison gas, “as a method of warfare” against Ukrainian forces, in violation of a global ban on the use of such weapons.

The State Department said in a statement on Wednesday that Russia had used chloropicrin, a “choking agent” widely used during World War I, as well as tear gas, against Ukrainian troops. The use of these gases in warfare is banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention, an arms control treaty ratified by more than 150 countries, including Russia.

“The use of such chemicals is not an isolated incident and is probably driven by Russian forces’ desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield,” the State Department said. Russia has been slowly but steadily pushing through Ukrainian defenses in the east this year, capturing several towns and villages.

The State Department also said that the United States would impose sanctions on three state entities linked to Russia’s chemical and biological weapons programs and four companies that supported them.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, called the accusations that Russian forces had used chemical weapons “odious and unsubstantiated” in a post on the Telegram messaging app .

The Ukrainian authorities have reported about 1,400 cases of suspected chemical weapons use on the battlefield by Russia since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, and say that the rate has accelerated as Moscow has pressed ahead with attacks along the front line.

Maj. Anastasiia Bobobvnikova, a public affairs officer for the Ukrainian Army’s Support Forces, said that 371 cases of suspected chemical weapons use by Russian forces had been reported in March, about seven times the number from a year earlier.

The use of toxic agents often coincides with intense periods of fighting when Russia’s forces are battling to dislodge Ukraine’s from well-fortified positions, according to several combat medics and soldiers.

This winter, as the fight around the city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine was gathering pace but Russia was largely failing to make progress, medics at a frontline stabilization point said Russian forces had used chloropicrin, which severely irritates the nose, throat and lungs when inhaled.

Olena, 38, the station’s head nurse, who gave only her first name in accordance with military protocol, said the effects were horrific, with soldiers experiencing burning skin and vomiting and suffering other debilitating effects that made it impossible for them to fight.

Major Bobobvnikova said that most of the chemical substances used in the attacks had been identified as CS and CN, tear gases most commonly used by riot police officers to control crowds.

Although governments use tear gas for domestic law-enforcement purposes, it is considered a chemical weapon when used in warfare, according to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons , an implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Civilians can usually escape tear gas during protests, but soldiers in trenches have little choice but to flee under enemy fire or risk being suffocated.

Gyunduz Mamedov, a former deputy prosecutor general of Ukraine, said last week that the Russian army had used tear gas against Ukrainian troops at least 900 times in the past six months, with more than 1,400 incidents reported since the start of the war.

Major Bobobvnikova said the chemicals were usually contained in grenades that Russian forces throw at Ukrainian positions, forcing soldiers out of their fortified positions. Ukrainian troops have a dearth of adequate protective equipment against chemical attacks.

Rebekah Maciorowski, an American combat medic who has been operating outside Avdiivka — a Ukrainian stronghold that Russian forces captured in February — said that gas had been used repeatedly against her unit, and that all the 200 masks it had been issued had already been put to use.

A private who asked only to be identified by his call sign, Croissant, because his parents live in occupied territory, was one of three soldiers from the Ukrainian 59th Brigade holding a position southwest of Avdiivka in late February when he said a canister was dropped on them.

When the object fell, he said, they did not hear the usual explosion a grenade would make, and, fearing it was gas, he and his comrades quickly put their gas masks — but he took a deep breath before putting his on.

“I breathed it in and I immediately felt it was burning,” he said. “I remembered my training, to close my eyes.”

The 59th Brigade provided evidence it said was collected later from the scene showing the canister used to deliver the gas. It was not possible to independently confirm the incident.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, reported in December that Russian forces fighting near the southern city of Kherson had said on social media that they were dropping K-51 aerosol grenades filled with CS gas from drones onto Ukrainian positions.

The State Department said that Russia’s disregard for its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention “comes from the same playbook” as its operations to poison Aleksei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who died in a Russian prison in February, and Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy who acted as a double agent for Britain , with Novichok nerve agents .

Foreign ministers assembled at a Group of 7 summit last month said in a statement that “any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia would be met with severe consequences.”

Carlotta Gall , Oleksandr Chubko and Liubov Sholudko contributed reporting.
