The Flexlite is our go-to for backpacking trips because it’s only one pound – the lightest classic chair on our list. Despite its light weight, the Flexlite Air doesn’t skimp on comfort. Its simple bucket-style seat offers enough back support that we’ve relaxed in it for hours around the campfire without any complaints.

We’re also impressed with how durable the Flexlite Air is. With a respectable weight limit of 250 pounds, a simple pole structure, and reinforced plastic hubs, this chair lasts season after season of rough use with very little maintenance. 

The main downside of this REI model is it’s a bit bulky when stored, especially compared to more compact models with a similar structure, like the Helinox Chair Zero (below). And, it’s clunkier and slower to set up and break down than other chairs on this list due to the shape of the hubs, which can make nestling and uncoupling the poles a bit awkward.

But these are small qualms. The Flexlite Air can’t be beat for its price. This REI model represents a stellar value without compromising quality or attention to detail. The lightweight and durable Helinox Chair Zero has been near the top of our list for years because it’s compact, portable, and breathable.

For us, the Chair Zero is in the Goldilocks zone for both weight and weight capacity. That means it’s ultra-portable for most adventures, and is a great option for people of all sizes and shapes. Plus, with a seat height of 10 inches, you’ll be able to stretch out your legs as you settle into its strong but lightweight aluminum frame.

Our favorite thing about this model? It reclines a few inches, making it perfect for cloud-watching and stargazing. The deep, nylon scoop seat is supportive and comfortable, and setup is a breeze because the fabric attaches easily at the corners.

The downside of this chair is it’s one of the more expensive options on this list. And, the Chair Zero can be a bit cumbersome to get back in the bag due to the shape of the reinforced hubs. That said, for a premium price, you’ll be investing in a truly premium chair that’s durable, lightweight, and as comfortable as backpacking chairs come.

This is one of our all-time favorite chairs. And if you’re looking for portability beyond the backcountry, consider the Chair Zero. If you want to come as close as you can to that same reclining comfort deep in the backcountry, but don’t want to sacrifice weight, breathability, or stability, the NEMO Moonlite Elite is the chair of your dreams.

The Moonlite Elite swaps out the thick, short webbing and large buckles of the original Moonlite Reclining Chair ’s armrests in favor of thin, strong cordage and smooth locking devices. This innovation saves weight, but it also makes for a durable, simple reclining mechanism that’s highly adjustable. This allows you to tailor how far backward or forward the chair is while you’re sitting in it.

The Moonlite Elite rivals the comfiest chairs we tested. The strong but super breathable mesh seat conforms around your body without feeling cramped. The ball-and-socket design of the top attachment points make the chair pliable but not wobbly. And, it’s just tall enough to bend your knees naturally.

We were also impressed with the roll-up style storage sack. It doubles as a stable platform to prevent the chair from sinking into soft soil, sand, and mud – simply insert the legs of the chair into the corner pockets. And, you can choose to leave it at home to save an additional three ounces. For comparison, a similar platform for the Helinox Chair Zero is sold separately and costs extra. 

We’re big fans of the NEMO Moonlite, but it’s pricey. This is the most expensive model we tested, which isn’t suitable for everyone’s budget. That said, for folks who want to invest in a feature-forward, lightweight, and durable chair for a backcountry adventure, this is one of the most comfortable and well-thought-out models we’ve seen.

Though it’s super basic, the Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat Pad is an all-time favorite among ultralight backpackers, thru-hikers, and day hikers. When you need a soft place to plop down, the Z-Seat deploys quickly, weighs almost nothing, and offers a bit of extra comfort and protection from the ground whenever you need it.

CleverHiker Founder, Dave Collins, has used this seat for thousands of miles of hiking over the last decade. It’s been his go-to for backpacking trips everywhere from the Sawtooths, Yosemite, and Banff, to the Uintas, Wind River Range, and Mount Saint Helens – plus hundreds of day hikes. 

The Z-Seat is extremely lightweight and super convenient to store, set up, and pack away for quick trail breaks, which makes it ideal for use throughout the day. At only two ounces, it’s the lightest “chair” on our list. Plus, it can literally save your rear, since you’ll vastly improve the appearance of (and extend the life of) your pants or shorts by using a pad instead of the ground.

The obvious downside is this pad doesn’t provide any back support, but it does add a layer of softness and a bit of insulation between you and the ground, which is really important on rough trails and cold, wet days. Also, you’ll still be sitting on the ground, a rock, or a stump with the Z-seat on top, so the level of comfort is relative – but we’d still prefer the cushioning and protection it offers over a wet bum.

For how versatile and affordable it is, we view the Z-Seat as a must-have for day hiking, backpacking, and more. Anytime you’re outside and want a bit of protection from that sandy beach, forested trail, or rocky summit, this little pad is a small investment with a big payoff.

The Helinox Ground Chair is right near the top for the first time as a lightweight, comfortable, and seriously stable seat. If you want a backpacking chair that’s easy to carry, durable, and ergonomic, this is the one for you.

The Ground Chair is, as its name implies, low to the ground. With a seat height of only 4.5 inches, this design allows you to extend your feet in front of you. In a world of tight and small backpacking chairs, we love the back support and comfortable positioning of this chair, which feels downright lavish. The bucket-style seat doesn’t round our backs much, and the durable but ventilated mesh keeps the air moving.

Stability is the Ground Chair’s trademark. Its unique square base offers unparalleled sturdiness, a design that really shines when you’re setting up on soft ground. Where other chairs tend to sink into sand, soil, and mud, the four wide leg pads that make up the base of this model keep the chair more level and stable than most.

Our only complaints about the Ground Chair come down to weight and price. At a pound and a half, it’s on the heavier side, although it’s still a low weight and we love it for shorter backpacking trips. This model is also a bit pricey. But, you get exactly what you pay for: one of the most durable, stable, and well-built backpacking chairs out there.

While such a low chair isn’t for everyone (we see you, tall people), the Ground Chair is a stellar chair for shorter adventurers. This is a stable and comfy chair that will last for years we recommend it for anyone who loves to lean back and spread out when they’re relaxing. This is a stable and comfy chair that will last for years.

The Big Agnes Skyline UL Chair is our favorite for its tall seat height and stellar back support. 

If you want the easiest chair to get out of and sit in, this is our top recommendation. At a whopping 15 inches, the Skyline is tied with the REI Trail Stool  for the tallest seat height on this list. Since most backpacking chairs are lower to the ground, we found those extra inches can make a meaningful difference in comfort and accessibility.

The Skyline is very similar in design to the REI Flexlite  and Helinox Chair Zero , but it’s much more supportive, a bit wider, and has a higher weight capacity. A slight curve in the rear legs adds a bit of stability, and we like that the scoop-style seat positions you upright without rounding your back or your butt – a rarity for most camping chairs. The result is a chair that feels stable yet cushy.

But at one pound, eleven ounces, the Skyline is one of the heavier chairs on this list and sits at the upper end of our maximum weight for a backpacking chair. It’s also one of the more expensive options we tested. However, it’s very compact and a real luxury for shorter overnight trips and is worth every penny for a taller chair that’s built to last.

This Big Agnes model is one of the few chairs we don’t mind lounging in for a couple of hours because it’s just that comfortable. It’s a durable, well-built choice for backpacking, but we also recommend the Skyline from hanging at the park to the packed dirt around a frontcountry campfire ring.

The Moon Lence Portable Folding Chair is one of our top affordable options. It’s an inexpensive crossover chair with a design similar to other luxury options: it’s stable, comfortable, and offers a relaxing break after miles of hiking in the hot sun – without straining your finances.

The wide, handy stash pockets on both sides are a unique offering for a backpacking chair. In fact, this is the only model on our list with stash pockets, and we relish keeping small items like chapstick, lighters, pocket knives, and phones out of the dirt when we’re unwinding.

We also appreciate the high weight capacity, where the Moon Lence is in a class of its own. Rated to hold nearly 400 pounds, this model is an inclusive choice for folks of all shapes and sizes and is built to last due to heavily reinforced pole joints.

At two pounds, the Moon Lence is right at the maximum weight we’d consider reasonable for backpacking. That’s why it’s a great option for short trips and frontcountry activities where ounces aren’t a big concern, and why it’s a bit further down our list.

This model is also not as durable as higher-quality options. After several dozen uses over one season, the stitching and hinge pins showed significant wear and tear.

But for a fraction of the price of comparable models, we don’t expect this chair to last forever. The Moon Lence is an outstanding budget-friendly option anytime you need a chair on the fly soring it along on your next weekend backpacking trip.

Gossamer Gear Thinlight Foam Pad

  The Gossamer Gear Thinlight is a stellar seating solution for hikers who want to keep weight to a minimum. With the largest area of any option on this list, this model is perfect for those who like to spread out when they relax.

This is one of the most versatile pads we tested. The Thinlight is a great sit pad when you fold it up. Having a full-size mat to use while taking breaks keeps your butt and your back out of the dirt so you stay cleaner and more comfortable on multi-day trips. It’s so long that you can also use it as insulation with your sleep system, and it’s perfect for use as a yoga mat to stretch out after miles of tough hiking. 

We love this Gossamer Gear model because it’s so useful, unfussy, and handy in the backcountry – there’s no straps, parts, or pieces. We also like that it can be customized to suit your precise needs: if it’s too large for you, consider cutting it down to whatever size you need.

That said, the Thinlight is more than simply a sit pad. It doesn’t offer back support, the material is fairly thin, and it’s undeniably less comfy than classic chairs. However, it’s several times larger than the Therm-A-Rest Z-Seat Pad above – but only weighs a bit more – making it one of the handiest pieces of gear we’ve used when backpacking. The simplicity of this pad is its charm, and exactly why we love it.

The Thinlight Pad is also one of the most affordable options on the market. This Gossamer Gear model is a no-brainer addition to any backpacking kit, whether you’re new to trekking or a seasoned veteran. For less than $25, strap it to the bottom of your bag for when you need a durable and compact way to stay out of the dirt.

• Crazy Creek Hex 2.0

The Hex 2.0 is versatile in the frontcountry as well, and it’s our go-to all summer long for a variety of events. We’ve used ours to make bench seating at baseball games more comfortable, brought it along for summer lawn concerts, and we’ve even taken it out on our paddle board to recline while floating.

At almost one and a half pounds, it certainly isn’t the lightest or the most compact option available, but the Hex 2.0 is durable. Thanks to excellent construction, burly nylon ripstop fabric, and carbon fiber stays, this model is built to last for years of use, and you’ll find yourself reaching for it season after season.

This chair also has the lowest seat height on this list, since it’s positioned directly on the ground. For those with mobility issues, sore hips or joints, or folks who want an ergonomic “classic” chair that lets you sit upright and bend your knees, the Hex 2.0 will fall a bit short. 

That said, you won’t find a better seat when it comes to convenience, speedy setup, or ease of use. Also consider checking out the LongBack version, which is taller and wider than the 2.0, or the Power Lounger , which offers more coverage under the legs so you can lay back without your feet or calves touching the ground.

The Trail Stool is quick and easy to get out and put away, and it certainly beats sitting on the ground or looking for the perfect rock, root, or stump. Its fast deployment and super simple design make it perfect for everything from gardening and fishing to hiking and cooking. The Trail Stool also packs away as fast as it sets up, making it a great choice for restful stops.

We’re also big fans of this model’s seat height. At 15 inches, it’s one of the tallest chairs on our list, tied only with the Big Agnes Skyline UL . A taller seat can help minimize pain from sitting down and standing up, plus they give you a bit more space to stretch your legs – a treat when you’re sore from hiking all day.

Our biggest gripe with the Trail Stool is an issue with stools in general: there’s no back support, so it’s not our go-to for extended vegging sessions. It also has the lowest weight capacity rating on this list – 200 pounds – which limits who can sit in it and its overall usefulness.

That said, we love the Trail Stool as a fast and reliable seat for short adventures where breaks are frequent. It’s built to last for years, so we recommend keeping it ready to go in your car or gear room for the next adventure. If you have bad knees, are fed up looking for the perfect rock to rest on, or simply need a place to perch in camp, the Trail Stool is well worth considering.

The Therm-a-Rest Trekker Chair is as comfortable as ultralight chairs come. This model is one of the most lightweight and compact seats on this list but still offers great back support in a unique, functional design.

To use the Trekker Chair, you’ll need a sleeping pad like the NeoAir , which is sold separately. It takes a few minutes to set up the Trekker: first you’ll need to inflate the sleeping pad, then situate it in the elastic sleeves, and finally adjust the chair into its upright position. The bulk of the chair is dependent on the sleeping pad you pair it with – so, the thicker your sleeping pad, the more cushy the chair will feel. 

The Trekker Chair takes a few extra steps, but it feels like a real luxury in the backcountry once it’s set up. Since you’re already bringing your sleeping pad along, the elastic frame only weighs 10 ounces more, and you can transform your pad into an entirely new piece of trail furniture. When it comes to flopping your legs out and relaxing at camp, this is one of our favorites.

That said, the Trekker Chair is a bit cumbersome to set up, so we exclusively reserve it for backpacking trips when you’re hanging out at camp. This is not the chair you can whip out for short trail breaks, which is why it’s near the bottom of our list.

This chair also puts your sleeping pad in a vulnerable position: almost directly on the ground. Your sleeping pad is an absolutely essential piece of gear, and inflatables run the risk of being punctured. Be sure to inspect and clear debris before you set the chair down. We highly recommend using a small ground cloth underneath the Trekker Chair to ensure its safety when outside the tent.

The Trekker isn’t designed for on-the-go use during short adventures on the trail, but it’s a stellar investment for those who want a super comfortable seat after a long day of hiking and want a seriously cozy resting place in camp.

You’ll also want to account for additional features like adjustable legs, detachable components, and stuff sacks to consider if they’re worth bringing, or if you can save weight by leaving them at home.

PACKED SIZE

Chairs with slim designs are perfect for long carries by maximizing valuable internal (and external!) space for other gear. That’s why it’s a priority that your backpacking chair can fold or collapse into a compact package. Look for chairs with stuff sacks included to keep components, flaps, and straps in a small and streamlined package.

Most backpacking chairs are low to the ground, but it’s still important to find the right height for your comfort preferences and mobility needs. Height and back support are most important for those who are taller or larger, deal with chronic pain, or love to lounge. A simple sit pad might do the trick, although you’re still on the ground without back support.

At two pounds (or less), durability is crucial when it comes to backpacking chairs. That’s why we recommend chairs constructed from high-quality, reinforced materials like aluminum alloy, lightweight steel, and sturdy polyester and nylon fabrics. We recommend looking for chairs with burly stitching and fortified seams, specifically in high-stress areas like pole pockets and the seat of the chair. And, preventative measures can dramatically increase the lifespan of your chair. Try to avoid using the chair at or near its maximum weight limit, and never flop into your backpacking chair with your full weight to avoid damage. Set up in stable and even ground to prevent too much pressure on one support pole. Rather than relying on a dirty picnic table at a campsite or sitting on a sharp log, camping chairs can make a night in the woods much more comfortable and enjoyable. They also offer some much needed respite from all the activities associated with camping, from pitching your tent to gathering firewood. Even backpackers — notoriously picky about what they carry — should consider a lightweight camping chair to offer some solace and rest after a miles-long slog.

When selecting the optimal chair, consider how you’ll use it: car campers who travel nominal distances from their vehicle to the campsite can go with a heavier model outfitted with cool features, while hikers and backpackers should hone in on ultralight models, and those who plan to use the chair in a neighborhood park or at a concert can likely split the difference. There are even camp couches and loveseats, expanding your options to turn your campsite into a makeshift living room.

During our selection process, we tested a lot of camping chairs — 47 in total, over the course of two years — with a special emphasis on how easy they were to use, portability, durability, and value. Here are our top picks, which we will continue to test for another six months on as many camping trips as we can.

The chair proved easy to set up, store, and carry, and the materials feel durable enough to handle several seasons of constant use.

People with knee problems or limited leg strength may not like that the chair sits lower to the ground.

We found that the Alps Mountaineering Getaway Chair proved to be easy to both set up — just pull it out of the bag and spread the armrests until the legs fully extend — and to quickly store in the included carrying bag, which comes with two straps so you can haul the eight-pound chair on one or both shoulders. The lightness comes, in part, from the shorter-than-average legs, which increase the chair’s versatility and make it suitable for a campsite, concert, or festival. We also found that you don’t have to sacrifice durability for lightness; the frame is constructed from durable, powder-coated steel. Large pads under each chair leg helps keep the chair stable in loose dirt, uneven grass, and sand. Nylon mesh backing at the seat improves breathability and will dry quickly if it gets caught in a rainstorm . We also liked how the seat configured our knees slightly up and reduced pressure on our back. It felt just as comfortable for our shorter team members as it did for one of our six-foot-five friends. It also comes with a beverage holder and a small cooler (measuring 2.5 x 8 x 8 inches) integrated into the left arm, which we used to keep our smartphone, wallet , and keys out of the sun — though it has enough space to accommodate a small ice pack and two cans of your preferred beverage.

If you’re looking for an upright chair that’s reliably secure and sturdy, this one hits the mark.

The carrying bag only has one strap, so you can’t wear it as a backpack.

If you don’t want a low-to-the-ground chair like our best overall option, we also loved this chair that was a little higher up off the ground. Unlike lesser camp chairs, the Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Chair locks into position to assure that it’ll never collapse on you. The fully upright chair is easy to set up, and once you locate the lock, it’s easy to collapse and store in the included carrying bag — though the bag only has one strap, so you can’t wear it as a backpack. Weighing in at nine pounds, it’s a bit heavier than some competitors, but that trade-off affords one of the most stable seating surfaces available, with ample support on the armrests and wide, padded leg tips that provide a secure seat on a variety of mixed terrain. Breathable mesh ripstop poly in the back will stand up to serious abuse, and Kijaro also packed in loads of add-ons, including two cup holders, a zippered pocket, and a mesh pocket.

Weighing in at a feathery two pounds, this is a great chair for hiking, backpacking, and other activities for which weight is a key consideration.

The small carrying case makes it a bit difficult to pack.

With a chair cover constructed of 900D Oxford ripstop ballistic nylon outfitted with double seams and an aircraft-grade aluminum frame, the Moon Lence Camping Chairs Compact Backpacking Chair is incredibly strong and very lightweight. Newly designed leg tips work with a wider, square-shaped base frame to provide stability in a variety of conditions. And though the frame architecture looks a bit complicated, we found the set-up to be intuitive and fast. We also loved how many straps line the carrying case, including nylon webbing with multiple loops so you can attach it to a carabiner or weave it through a backpack’s straps. When sitting in the chair, we found that the frame flexes a bit, and the fabric has some give, which makes the chair comfortable, with an almost cushion-like sitting experience. Otherwise, this chair keeps things simple, with two small Velcro pockets on the arms and two slits on either side to add breathability. It is, however, kind of a pain to pack it back into the compact carrying case; you have to collapse the frame, and then roll the chair around the poles before sliding everything inside. The compact size and two-pound weight makes it worth it if you’re going on a backpacking trip with limited carrying space.

Weighing 10 pounds, it’s not a chair you’d want to carry on long hauls, but for car camping it’s fantastic, and it includes a carrying case with a shoulder strap to make transport easier. We found it to be one of the most durable and comfortable chairs in our tests, and little details like two cup holders and a side pocket round out the features. And set-up was a breeze: take out the chair and simply pull it open. It also fits nicely in the carrying case, with no fuddling to get the chair back into the bag. You can attach a shade canopy to the back for sun protection ( sold separately ).

It doesn’t come with a carrying bag — just a strap — so hauling it longer distances can be burdensome.

Rather than using a traditional curved design, the GCI Outdoor Kickback Rocker Chair employs two patented spring-loaded shocks to create a rocking action, which drastically improves the chair’s stability on all sorts of variable terrain. We even tested it on a steep hill and was able to sit comfortably without issue. Setting the chair up was easy, and it has a closure strap to keep things secured when you collapse the chair — interestingly, it doesn’t come with a carrying bag, but a carrying strap on the chair makes hauling it short distances pretty easy. Weighing in at 10 pounds, it’s a bit heavier than most camping chairs, but that’s the tradeoff you have to endure to get the comfort of using a rocking chair, as opposed to one with four fixed legs. We found that the rocking motion proved reliable while sitting on grass and other outdoor surfaces and that it provided a lot of comfort for long periods of sitting. And we also loved that it includes a phone case and an oversized cup holder generous enough to hold taller bottles.

This lightweight chair was plenty comfortable and durable despite weighing only one pound — and it’s easy to collapse and store in a pack.

It’s a bit pricey and doesn’t include any add-ons like a cup holder or storage pocket.

We love it when a product is so easy to use that it doesn’t come with instructions — and that’s just one of the things that sets the REI Co-op Flexlite Air Chair apart from other hiking-focused camp chairs. Set-up was simple, as was collapsing it down and rolling it up to fit into the carrying case. The one-pound chair features a durable aluminum frame and a ripstop nylon seat that’s plenty durable — but it really wins points for being so portable, and it is small enough to store in a backpack for long hikes . We found that the seat almost cradles you while sitting, and it flexes a bit to avoid feeling too rigid. As with most ultra-light hiking/backpacking equipment, the chair is streamlined and does not have any accessories like a cup holder or an additional pocket, which may turn off more casual hikers but makes for a great gift option for outdoorsmen .

Embark outdoor portable mesh chair.

This chair is a great, no-frills option that’ll hold up to years of light-to-moderate use, and the cup holders and side pocket are super-handy.

The included carrying case is very flimsy, which makes packing the chair a chore.

If you don’t want to drop hundreds of dollars on a camping chair that you won’t use that often, this is a solid affordable option for casual campers. We found that we could set up the Embark Outdoor Portable Mesh Chair easily with one hand, and it was lightweight enough to haul a decent distance thanks to the generous shoulder strap on the carrying case. But the case itself was made of nearly paper-thin material that likely won’t stand up to serious abuse and that also made it a pain to slide the chair inside. Overall, the chair was comfortable, with ample stability and a back mesh panel to help airflow.  It also comes with a storage pocket hanging off the right arm and two mesh cup holders, though that material also feels subpar, and may not hold up for serious campers. If you don’t camp often and don’t want to invest in something more heavy-duty, we think this would be a nice choice. It comes in two colors: a muted orange as well as tan.

Constructed from heavy-duty 300-denier, water-repellent ripstop polyester and coated aluminum, the REI Co-op Outward Low Lawn Chair has two wide, adjustable backpack straps that make hauling the six-pound chair a breeze. And set-up couldn’t be simpler — detach the secure strap and push down on the armrests, and you’re set. The bifold design also lets you nestle blankets and towels into the chair and carry them as a catch-all by closing the seat around your camping items. We found that the low-profile design allowed it to remain stable on all types of uneven terrain, with two curved support bars running between the front and back legs to improve stability and handle loose sand. Still, a bit of padding would be nice for prolonged use.

If you’re camping with multiple people and want to feel right at home, the Kelty Low Loveseat is plenty comfortable for two people to sit in thanks to its low-to-the-ground architecture and a slightly reclined back panel. The durable, powder-coated steel frame pops together in seconds, and the 600D polyester comes with quilted padding to further amp the comfort level.

Each camper also gets an adjustable armrest with an insulated, adjustable beverage holder. The chair also won us over in its simple-to-use “carry wrap” design, which surrounds the chair once it’s been folded up, allowing you to nestle in other items inside before pulling the adjustable straps tight and carrying it on a padded, adjustable shoulder strap — no fussing with tight-fitting, bag-style carrying cases.

It’s a little heavy to carry, but it makes a fun loveseat addition to any campsite—perfect for cuddling up in front of an outdoor projector for movie night. We even loved the fun color options, like the bright blue seat outfitted with a contrasting red frame.

Kelty Lowdown Couch

Ideal for car camping — or a backyard fire pit — this couch provides plenty of seating space and a comfortable, reclined low-profile design.

As expected, the 20-pound couch is heavy, though the padded shoulder strap and the wrap-around configuration makes it easy to haul over short distances.

If your ideal camping set-up resembles that of an outdoor living room, you need the Kelty Lowdown Couch to complete your kit. Even larger than the loveseat above, it provides ample sitting space for up to three adults, with a durable 600D polyester seat that’s padded for added comfort and a slightly reclined, low-to-the-ground design. The whole thing pops up smoothly thanks to a strong, powder-coated steel frame — and we were able to set it up with just one person on their own. We also loved the design of the wrap-around carrying configuration, which lets you place other items inside the adjustable straps and then haul everything with the padded, adjustable shoulder strap. Each arm rest is adjustable, and you can resize the mesh cup holders to fit whatever you need close by, including beverages or your phone. Yes, at more than 20 pounds, it’s kind of heavy, but you also get three seats, so it’s a fair trade-off, especially for car camping. But if you’re thinking you can use this couch as a camping bed , think again — it’s effectively three attached chairs and not one flat surface, so lying comfortably isn’t in the cards.

GCI Outdoor Freeform Zero Gravity Lounger : Weighing in at 20 pounds, this was one of the heavier chairs we tested and, even worse, didn’t have any sort of carrying strap or storage bag, making any transport a two-handed affair. That said, once in place, the chair provides all-day comfort, and the adjustable pillow adds to an overall plush experience.

Outdoor Living Suntime Sofa Chair : The plush, padded chair proved to be comfortable, and the 600D cationic fabric does wick sweat, but a lack of mesh panels or any sort of venting means things can get sweaty in hotter climates.

Yeti Trailhead Camp Chair : We liked that this Yeti chair is rated to hold up to 500 pounds, and the flexible fabric was comfortable, but the chair was heavy to carry and felt a bit bulky and big. It also cost considerably more than any other chair we tested.

Coleman Broadband Mesh Quad Chair : Though this affordable Coleman chair was easy to assemble and repack, the overall large package didn’t lend itself to transporting while carrying multiple items. We also found that the chair was a bit unstable on sand or loose dirt unless you push the legs into surfaces.

Eno Lounger DL Chair : This chair really packs in the extra features, including a cushioned headrest, a high and reclined back, a cup holder, and two slip pockets, but the thing was a bear to get back into the carrying case. The headrest is also fixed and not adjustable, so it’s better suited for taller campers.

We tested 47 camping chairs over the course of two years, with the first batch in our New York City lab and the second batch out in the real world. Each chair was evaluated on ease-of-use and set-up, including how easy it was to get the chair back into the carrying case (when one was included); the comfort level while sitting for long durations on variable terrain (including uneven surfaces and loose dirt and sand); and the overall value— whether the asking price was a worth investment based on the wider experience of using the chair.

We also paid attention to the weight and size of each chair to see how portable they felt and how easy they were to transport over various distances. We will continue to test each chair in real camping scenarios after our initial tests for at least six more months to make sure they remain durable and withstand the rigors of long-term use. Tips for Buying a Camping Chair

Consider your height and weight.

As a general rule, camping chairs are designed for most people, regardless of height or weight. But if you weigh more than average, be sure you check the chair’s weight capacity, which can range from 200-500 pounds so that you’re confident the chair can handle your load.

In terms of your height, standard-height chairs (the distance from the ground to the seat top) typically hover around 18-20 inches, but if you are on the shorter side and don’t want your feet to dangle, consider a chair with a lower seat configuration, which puts you closer to the ground. Shorter chairs also position your knees slightly higher, which can reduce the pressure on your back, and they’re also great for concerts or festivals, since you don’t sit as high and won’t block other people’s views. Conversely, if you’re quite tall, you might not want a lower chair, which may position your knees higher than is comfortable, and may prove to be a struggle to stand.

Weigh comfort versus portability

When it comes to camping chairs, weight can range from one pound to up to more than 20 pounds if you go with a camp couch , and, in general, the heavier chairs will have more features — stronger frames; larger weight capacity; the ability to rock; customizable adjustments; padding; and add-ons like cup holders, pockets, or coolers. But even the most minimal camp chairs are still more comfortable than sitting on the ground.

When considering which one works for you, first think about how you’d use it. If you plan to toss it in your backpack and use it as a respite mid-hike or while backpacking, go with an ultralight model that’ll provide you some comfort and get you off the ground, but won’t weigh you down. Car campers can go heavier, especially if the distance traveled can be measured in a few dozen feet rather than miles. But if you envision using the chairs for more remote camping, hauling it to the beach, or at festivals or concerts, target one that you can carry for 15-30 minutes.

Make sure you have enough chairs for everyone

This one’s a no-brainer. Ideally you want a seat for everyone in your camping crew — no one wants to be stuck sitting on the ground or isolated to some moss-covered, wooden picnic table. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need a chair for every camper. If you plan on camping often with your family or a larger group of friends, you could also explore getting a two-seater, or even a three-seat camping couch. And don’t forget your dog, either!

Frequently Asked Questions

Most camping chairs are ready to handle the scrapes, dirt, and rain that is part of the camping experience, and some boast DWR-treated fabrics to fend off moisture penetration. But for light cleaning, you can use a mild soap detergent and wipe away any dirt or debris. Cleaning the mesh panels can be a bit trickier and would require a bit more time and effort.

Most camping chairs come with a carrying bag that can double as a storage bag for when not in use, and all of them collapse down. Just be sure the chair is entirely dry before storing it to avoid any mold build-up.

Types of Wheelchairs

You can find several different types of wheelchairs for travel, be it for yourself or someone you love. The two prominent categories are electric/powered and manual. My reviews later on cover good choices for both.

Manual wheelchairs either get self-propelled by the user or are just pushed by someone accompanying the rider (aka a transport wheelchair).

They’re pretty simple to use, and they’re very similar to the wheelchairs you can borrow at many places. Manual travel wheelchairs often mean keeping a smaller profile and easier transportation during a trip.

Powered wheelchairs have electric batteries so they can run on their own if they have a sufficient charge. They can also be self-powered by the user if they need or want to.

Power Chairs vs Manual Wheelchairs: The Pros and Cons

In deciding between lightweight power and manual chair options, you need to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each one.

Not all wheelchairs are the same, so it can be hard to know what to look for in a good travel wheelchair. Here is a checklist you can use to “roll your way” through the analysis.

• Lightweight : Travel wheelchairs have to be light enough that they can be easily moved in and out of cars, buses, and other modes of transportation all throughout your trip. Make sure you choose a lightweight wheelchair that folds quickly and easily.
• Durability : Users love travel wheelchairs for their weight, function, and size. However, you need to be sure that any travel wheelchair you get is sturdy enough while you’re on the road.
• Simplicity : Travel wheelchairs need to be simple to set up, collapse, and generally use while you’re out and about. Test your wheelchair for this before your trip, and hopefully while you’re still in a money-back guarantee or return period.
• Comfort : If you or someone you love is going to be using a travel wheelchair every single day of a trip, then they need to be comfortable while in it. Otherwise, the vacation can quickly be ruined. Seating is paramount here, especially in regard to width, depth, and back support.

I am including this at the top of my list of travel wheelchairs because it is the lightest and easiest-to-transport standard wheelchair you will find.

The total weight of the chair is 19 lbs if you leave the rear wheels on. But, if you pop them off with the quick-release button, the weight goes down to 13.5 lbs. Nearly anyone can handle loading that weight into the trunk of the car.

It also folds down into a very small, easy-to-lift package that is only 28″ x 26″ x 6″. So, it’s going to fit in even the smallest vehicles. You can even get an optional carry bag to make transportation even easier.

But, there are other things to love about this chair too. First, you get a seat and back cushion that are an upgrade over standard wheelchair upholstery. Second, the wheel locks are more robust than many of the Featherweight wheelchair’s competitors.

Finally, there are hand brakes on the back of the chair for the caregiver to use.

For seniors who don’t push themselves in their wheelchairs and have caregivers, I really like this transport chair from Medline.

It is a really good choice too for someone who needs a comfortable lightweight wheelchair for narrow doorways . Safety is also a top priority, given the loop-lock handbrakes and attached seat belt.

The handbrakes on the back are easier for caregivers to operate and keep the chair in control at all times. The larger wheels on the back give a smoother ride over obstacles or rougher surfaces.

The seat is made of nylon and is breathable, comfortable, and cleans with a quick wipe down. Plus, you can adjust the footrest as well.

Sturdy aluminum framing comes in red or blue. In either color, it has a powder coating to prevent rust and other deterioration.

The problem with heavy-duty wheelchairs is that they are often heavy. This is because extra parts are required for them to support extra weight. The added weight can make them difficult to travel with.

But, the Graham Field (E&J) bariatric transport chair is lightweight and durable too. It is designed to support larger people with a 24″ wide seat and a 400 lb weight capacity. And, the total weight of the chair is just 31 lbs. That’s a weight most people can handle.

One potential drawback to watch for is that the overall width of this chair is 30.25 inches. So, it may not maneuver well in smaller homes. But, if you just use it out in the community it will work just fine. The frame folds easily and fits into most vehicle trunks

If you prefer or need a power chair but think portability is a problem, take a look at the Featherweight Power Chair.

It weighs only 33 lbs and folds into one piece making it extremely easy to transport! Most portable power chairs and scooters have to be disassembled into multiple pieces.

Then, you have to reassemble them when you get to your destination. But, the Featherweight Power Chair stays in one piece. It is even airline-approved.

It has the usual power wheelchair features too: it is joystick-operated and battery-powered. The top speed is 5 mph and it will go about 11 miles between charges. So, it’s powerful enough for a day of shopping.

Because of the limited seat width of 18″ and a weight capacity of 250 lbs, it isn’t going to fit everyone though. The smaller wheels will give a bit of a bumpy ride if you are off the beaten path.

But if a truly portable power wheelchair is what you need, here it is !

Pride Go Chair

Pride has made the portable Go Chair power wheelchair for many years now and it has a great track record of reliability and durability.

The chair is portable but it is a bit of a process. The total chair weight is 128 pounds but it disassembles into 4 smaller pieces with the heaviest piece weighing 36 lbs.

Using Pride’s feather-touch disassemble process, you lift the seat off the base, then remove the battery compartment, and finally separate the base into 2 parts.

The process isn’t difficult but not everyone is going to be able to do it. See the video below for a demonstration of this.

The seat and armrests are comfortable enough for long days on the road. But, the speed is slower than some other portable power chairs at 3.7 mph (walking speed is 3 mph fyi) and the range is a bit smaller too – 8.7 miles between charges.

If you will be using it inside your home, it should fit through most doorways fine. The total overall width is only 22.5 inches. Not bad for a lightweight portable power chair !

How do I qualify for a wheelchair?

These aren’t CPAP machines. You can buy one without a prescription. However, it’s a good idea to go through your doctor. He or she can help you select a great model suited well for your current condition and circumstances.

Also, if you can get a qualification or a prescription, you might be eligible for certain medical programs or insurance coverage that pays for some or all of your wheelchairs, although just paying full price on the general retail market is always a possibility.

How long do wheelchairs last?

A typical lifespan for most wheelchairs is 2 to 3 years. Manual wheelchairs might last up to 5 years since they don’t have batteries and motors.

Just keep in mind that the more mileage/use a wheelchair gets, the sooner it will wear out. If you get a travel wheelchair that you only use when on the road, and don’t use at home, it can certainly last longer than these estimates.

How long do wheelchair batteries last?

Most wheelchair batteries, when in new condition and fully powered, should last more than 8 hours, giving the user 10 to 20 miles of coverage.

Battery use over time will make the condition decline, so the charge duration and range will reduce.

Many manufacturers suggest replacing power wheelchair batteries every 18 months, although depending on usage, you might do it as quickly as 6 months or as slowly as 2 years.

Features to Consider before Purchasing

Battery life.

If you have an active lifestyle that often requires you to move from one place to the other all the time, it’s only wise to choose a wheelchair with enough battery span to keep you working as you want. Most travel wheelchairs have a battery life of about 5-15 miles, depending on which chair you choose. A 5-mile battery might not seem like a lot (in comparison to a 15-mile battery) , but stop and think about it -- 5 miles is a lot! If you are just doing errands or visiting family, a 5-mile battery should be plenty. You will have to charge it more frequently, but most users are okay with that. A 15-mile battery is beneficial for users on vacation, who frequently travel, or who don't want to regularly charge their chair.  Additionally, some wheelchairs come with optional upgrades for backup batteries, which means that you can adventure to your heart’s content without worrying about frequent recharges.

Wheelchair Weight

An ideal travel power wheelchair should be easy to transport when necessary. For most wheelchairs that fold, they tend to be lighter and weigh about 60-ish pounds. Foldable chairs are the easiest to take on the go; simply fold the chair, and the top of the backrest becomes your carry handle. If you have enough storage space for a power wheelchair, then that will be your best option.

Now, imagine this. You are taking a trip, and your car is packed with suitcases and everything. Now, where do you put the power wheelchair? Solution: there are other travel power wheelchairs don't fold, but rather can disassemble into a few lightweight pieces. Those types of chairs are usually about 130-ish pounds, but it's because each piece is an easy-to-handle size/weight. These chairs are best suited for car trunks that also have other items like a suitcase. 

Turning Radius

The turning radius refers to the minimum diameter it takes to turn your wheelchair in a circle. If you will be using your wheelchair primarily indoors, it would be best to get a wheelchair with a tight turning radius. This will allow you to easily navigate around corners and small spaces. If you will be using your wheelchair primarily outdoors, then the turning radius is not as important. Still, consider if there will be small spaces wherever it is you are exploring. 

Storage Space

Another feature that might be more important to some customers than others is storage pieces attached to the wheelchair itself. These include pouches, baskets, and cup holders, and can be incredibly useful whether you like to take drinks and snacks with you on the go or you have a required assistance device that you have to keep on you at all times. 

For valuable items, such as a purse, it’s best to store them in an under-seat storage basket/pouch. Since the storage is right under you, it’s easily accessible and always in your line of sight. Alternatively, if you need to store a water bottle or miscellaneous items, it’s best to use a pouch that’s located on the back of the seat. Keep in mind that the back pouch is a little harder to reach, and you can’t keep a close eye on it.

This Folding Chair Is So Lightweight, I Can Lift It With My Pinky Finger

I love watching my nephew play Little League, but I don’t love the resulting bruises I get on my hip bones after lugging heavy metal lawn chairs to his games. My family’s old set of lawn chairs is a melange of old-fashioned folding lawn chairs and more “modern” collapsible chairs from the early aughts (the kind that awkwardly crams into a canvas sleeve and weighs as much as a small child). If you’re carrying one of those chairs, it’s awkward enough. If you’re carrying four of them from the parking lot to the ball field or across the sand to the beach , you may as well lie prostrate on the shoreline and give up.

I recently decided my family needed an upgrade, so I asked the HuffPost Shopping team if they knew of any lightweight folding chairs. Our managing editor immediately tossed out one brand and one brand only, “Helinox,” saying they “weighed one pound.” I assumed this was a gross exaggeration, but upon searching the brand I was shocked to find out she was only slightly hyperbolic — the chairs weigh two pounds each.

Let me just say that my mind was blown before I even unpackaged the first chair I ordered.

When the package arrived on my front porch I was in total disbelief that this could be a chair — it comes in a canvas zipper pouch that’s not much bigger than one of today’s giant Stanley tumblers, and it was featherweight. I had snagged the most affordable model that Helinox offers, the “ original lightweight camping chair.”

The “ black/blue ” color is currently on sale for $84.81 (23% off), and all other colors are still full price at $109.95. ( Backcountry has one tie-dye colorway on even deeper sale at $76.97 .)

Spending around $100 on an outdoor folding chair would have been unthinkable before experiencing how comfortable and convenient these Helinox chairs are, and now I’m afraid my family and I will never be able to go back.

After confirming the chair was indeed as lightweight as I hoped, the next test was assembly. I somehow inherited my dad’s “I don’t believe in instruction manuals, I can do it myself” mentality, which never works — but it did this time. The chair is essentially a bunch of metal poles connected by bungees. If you twist and turn them randomly, the chair basically assembles itself in about 15 seconds. Then all you have to do is slide the canvas seat (which is machine washable!) on the poles, and voila.

The final test: Comfort. The chair looks a little low to the ground, but once you’re in it you may find yourself taking a nap. It reclines at just the right angle, and there are no poles digging into your body — it’s a little canvas cocoon that feels stable. My brother ended up watching an entire NBA game in it when we set it up in our living room to test it out, if that’s any indication.

If you want a taller version that offers more neck support, try the “high-back” model , which has a mesh pocket on the side to hold your belongings, comes in nine colors and costs $139.95. I ordered one of these, too, for the exceedingly tall people in my family who need neck support.

Again, I can’t believe I now own such an expensive outdoor folding chair. But for me (and my older mom, and my brother with kids), it’s worth it to save space in the car, to save our literal backs while carrying them, and to have a comfortable place to rest.

Fallout continues, following Delta council uprising against mayor

Delta, b.c, mayor george harvie reverses course on travel as metro vancouver chair following scrutiny.

Delta, B.C., Mayor and Metro Vancouver board chair George Harvie says he won't travel to Amsterdam, where he was to learn about urban drainage and flooding mitigation approaches meant to benefit the region, because of recent attention over his role on Delta council and travel expenses.

The trip, set for mid-June, was to come in the final weeks as his role as chair of the regional government. Metro Vancouver includes 21 municipalities and governs things like water, waste and emergency management.

"I have come to the difficult decision to forego this learning opportunity. I do not wish to be a distraction to the ongoing work at Metro Vancouver," he said in a statement Tuesday.

The controversy around Harvie and his travel as Metro Vancouver chair illustrates an ongoing fracture between the mayor and the six members of Delta city council.

In 2022, Harvey ran for a second term as mayor under a political slate called Achieving for Delta . He got 75 per cent of the vote and his entire slate was also elected.

'Ensure proper governance'

But discord among the group became public in early May, when his council passed seven motions aimed at limiting his influence.

It also removed him as a Delta director to Metro Vancouver, which ultimately means an end to his role as the Metro Vancouver board chair on July 1.

"Over the past months, it has become increasingly apparent that these changes were needed to uphold the interests of Delta taxpayers and ensure proper governance," said Couns. Rod Binder, Daniel Boisvert, Jennifer Johal, and Dylan Kruger in a statement May 6.

Kruger said he was not available to speak to CBC News Wednesday, following Harvie's announcement about cancelling the Amsterdam trip.

Delta's former multi-term mayor, Lois Jackson, told CBC News that she suspected Harvie, who she hired away from Burnaby to be the city's chief administrative officer, was not listening to his councillors and they were sick of it.

"It think it was the biggest swipe they could take at him," she said about ousting him as Metro chair, although he will remain on Metro Vancouver's mayors committee.

"Is it political? Probably. But is it real? You bet," said Jackson.

Harvie's travel costs surpass $32K

New Westminster Coun. Daniel Fontaine said the upcoming trip to the Netherlands that had been planned by Harvie was another example of unnecessary public spending.

He's critical of regional politicians taking tax-payer-funded trips when they are grappling with major cost overruns with a project like the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant .

The project could result in households within the North Shore sewerage area being on the hook for hundreds of dollars in additional fees each year for decades.

"Our local and regional taxpayers expect better, and so they should," said Fontaine in a statement.

Documents provided by Metro Vancouver show $21,213 in airfare for Harvie to attend a February  Canada-in-Asia conference in Singapore .

The airfare for the Netherlands trip was to cost $5,307. So far this year, Harvie's expenses, including the cancelled trip, are $32,852.

In 2023, $17,337 was spent to fly him to a Brisbane conference.

Meanwhile in 2023. the expenses for Metro Vancouver chief administrative officer Jerry Dobrovolny were $37,141, with more than half for travel, training and conferences.

Just Metro business

The regional government defends the spending.

In a statement, a spokesperson said, "Attending out-of-region conferences and study tours is part of Metro Vancouver's Leadership and Engagement program, which was first endorsed by the Metro Vancouver board in 2010. 

"All travel aligns with the Board Strategic Plan, and is within the annual budget."

Remuneration bylaws allow board and committee members taking air travel longer than nine hours to travel business or executive class. Metro Vancouver does not pay for spouses to travel with board and committee members.

Harvie, who has declined interviews on the matter, said in statements that any furor about his work in Delta and at Metro Vancouver is all politics.

"It was certainly not for lack of representing Delta's interests at Metro or fulfilling my duties as the Mayor or Delta," he said in an email to CBC News on May 8, following his council's uprising.

"It is definitely apparent they have already started the 2026 civic election in Delta."

Former Delta staffer files civil suit

There are other signs of discord in Delta and on council.

In late March, Paramjit Singh Grewal, the general manager of economic development and stakeholder relations in the mayor's office was dismissed.

He has since brought a civil suit seeking damages and alleging defamation in the firing, which court documents claim was done, "without cause and without notice."

The City of Delta and Coun. Dylan Kruger are named as defendants in the suit. Both have filed responses claiming no wrongdoing. None of the claims have been proven in court.

Harvie, in his email from May 8, made reference to the suit and specifically mentioned Kruger.

"I am very disappointed that Council is involved in this legal matter," he went on to write. "I do hope more public information on this matter will be an outcome of the Court process."

Leading up to the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a Soviet official infamously declined to host that year’s Paralympics, saying, “There are no invalids in the U.S.S.R.!” Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, access in Russia has improved, but at a remarkably slow pace.

With sights including the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Pushkin National Art Museum, Moscow is a dream destination for travelers of all abilities. Due to the country’s past history of discrimination towards the disabled and “invalids,” few would expect the city of Moscow to be accessible to those with mobility challenges. Surprisingly, though, the city can be accessed by those in wheelchairs, despite a number of obstacles which remain. While wheelchair travelers will have limited access to many museums and sights, the public transportation system can be utilized with planning. In a country whose government draws the ire of the world for its aggression and recent moves toward expansion, its growing access to the disabled community is a surprising reality that should be celebrated.
