Maria tuttocuore ‘02.

Maria Tuttocuore was already working in the travel industry when she decided to pursue a master's degree. She sensed that earning a degree in the field of travel and tourism would better position her for success by providing her with hands-on experience in the field and the opportunity to network. During her time at the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, she completed two internships—one at Leading Hotels of the World and the other at the New York State Division of Tourism . She credits these two experiences with opening the doors to a job at the Monaco Government Tourist Office , where she was promoted to a senior executive sales & marketing position. Her experience in luxury travel and extensive knowledge in destination marketing and leisure trade led her into launching her own travel destination marketing and management company UNICA Journeys LLC based in New York City. Today she represents and consults a varied portfolio of international luxury travel companies.

Christina T. Cavaliere, Ph.D.

Cavaliere is an environmental social scientist with a focus on linking tourism and biocultural conservation. Her areas of research involve the human dimensions of socio-ecological systems including tourism impacts. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Stuart Cottrell, Ph.D.

Stuart teaches courses in ecotourism, sustainable tourism development, protected area management, and research in human dimensions of natural resources. His research focus includes sustainable tourism, travel and tourism behavior, visitor impact management, and public perceptions of landscape disturbance issues. Present projects involve a National Science Foundation grant to examine land management agency and water provider perception of pine beetle impacts on water quality. As a former resident fellow with the School for Global and Environmental Sustainability, Stuart conducted a preliminary study of the impacts of mountain pine beetle infestation on recreation and tourism, which led to the present NSF project. One of the highlights of Stuart's teaching involves the monitoring of diseased corals and volunteer based conservation projects for an NGO in the Bahamas.

David Knight, Ph.D.

David has developed a unique transnational skill-set in sustainability and tourism management living and working in the U.S., Spain, the Philippines, Peru, and China. Drawing from experience as director, educator, researcher, consultant, collaborator, and confidant, David’s growing university-level leadership underscores his passion for partnerships and diversity in working with real-world organizations and communities to provide tangible, experiential learning opportunities for students. His research and consulting projects for organizations operating from local to international levels have analyzed a variety of sustainability and tourism issues pertaining to National Parks, Chinese tourist behavior, marine protected areas, and rural (e.g., Machu Picchu) community development. Ultimately, David hopes to employ his experience, compassion, and intellect to support institutions of higher learning in empowering diverse communities through exceptional outreach, student recruitment/retention, advising, teaching, and research activities.

Mike Manfredo, Ph.D. Head

Michael’s research focus is on understanding human thought about wildlife and natural resources. The goals of his current research program are: to increase the availability of human dimensions information relevant to wildlife and natural resource management; to provide for increased understanding of the role of human dimensions information in natural resources decision-making; to facilitate the integration of human dimension information into the natural resource decision-making process.

Dr. Sarah Walker

Dr. Sarah Walker’s research uses an environmental justice lens to investigate the role well-being can play in helping us better understand people’s relationships with their environments. Specifically , she studies human well-being in the context of climate resilience and adaptation in vulnerable communities around the world. Her work also investigates the well-being benefits of spending time in nature. Sarah received her PhD from Colorado State University and is currently completing her post-doctoral training at University of Colorado Boulder. She’s an avid hiker and cyclist, and loves being in the classroom with students.

Lina Xiong, Ph.D.

Lina Xiong is an assistant professor in the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources. She is also called "Dr. Bear," because her last name in Chinese means bear. Dr. Bear came to the U.S. in 2006 from mainland China. Lina completed her Ph.D. in Business Administration from Temple University in Philadelphia. Before coming to CSU, Dr. Bear had taught many business courses in the College of Business at Marshall University. Her teaching assignment at CSU includes tourism strategic management, tourism marketing, and advanced lodging in the Master of Tourism Management program. She is also responsible for developing several M.T.M. courses in mandarin. Dr. Bear's research interests include service management, internal branding, employee brand motivation, and customer loyalty. She has published several articles in hospitality management journals. Recently, Dr. Bear's dissertation, titled, "Employee Brand Internalization: The Central Route to a Brand Aligned Workforce," has received a Highly Commended Award of the 2014 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards in the Hospitality Management category. This is a prestigious international annual award presented by Emerald and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). She has worked in hospitality and tourism businesses in both China and the U.S.

Can I get a graduate certificates along with this master’s degree?

Yes. You can apply up to 12 credits of the Communication for Conservation certificate toward the Master of Tourism Management degree.

What is the average timeframe to complete the program?

The online Master of Tourism Management can be completed in two semesters. However, for students who are working full-time, this is likely an unrealistic timeframe. The average student completes the program in two years, but some students may take longer. The flexible, online program allows you to earn your degree at a pace that suits your lifestyle and goals.

No. All coursework in the program is during the fall and spring semesters.

What fees should I expect to pay in addition to tuition?

In addition to the tuition, students will pay a $32/semester technology fee. There will also be an added cost for books and texts.

The Master of Tourism Management requires completion of 30 credits, with a minimum of four elective credits.

The tourism management master's degree requires that students have the following:

Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited institution.
A 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate coursework. For applicants who do not meet the 3.000 cumulative GPA requirement, this is an alternative admission pathway. Applicants can gain formal admission if they have a cumulative GPA between 2.800 and 3.000 or have a cumulative GPA below 2.800 and have taken six credits of regular, graduate‐level coursework (500 level or higher) at CSU and obtain a B or better in all courses.
GRE scores are not required.

This is a special year for North Carolina. In June the U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst Resort’s famed No. 2 Course, originally designed by Donald Ross and restored to its sandy and bouncy glory in 2011 by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

Pinehurst No. 2 has always been special as the host site of major championships, tour events, top amateur competitions and a bucket-list destination for golfers around the world. Its turtle-back greens are legendary, challenging players of every level.

But to focus entirely on No. 2 is to miss so much of what North Carolina offers. From the mountains to the coast, the state is packed with great golf. The Golfweek’s Best rating program backs this up, with numerous layouts around the state appearing on various course-rankings lists.

Let’s take a look at two of the most popular lists: Golfweek’s Best top public-access courses in North Carolina and the top private courses in the state. If you’re planning a short trip, a full season among the pines or a retirement packed with great golf, this is the place to start.

If the classic or modern indicator includes a number, that is where the course stacks up in Golfweek’s Best ranking of top 200 classic or modern courses in the U.S., with 1960 as the dividing line between the two eras.

Also worth noting for golfers who have never had the experience: The courses at Pinehurst Resort are named numerically. That is represented in the lists below. No. 2 is the course on which the U.S. Open will be held, and No. 4 is the course renovated several years ago by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Five of the resort’s courses are included below in this year’s rankings – the resort’s recently opened No. 10 course did not kick off in time to appear in this year’s rankings but surely will in years to come.

How we do our rankings:

Golfweek’s Best offers plenty of rankings, everything from top public-access courses in each state to the very best layouts around the world. For pretty much any type of golf you want to play, we have a course ranking.

How do we come up with all these lists? After starting nearly three decades ago, Golfweek’s Best has expanded to rank courses with the input of more than 800 raters around the world. These golfers play the courses and rate each layout based on 10 provided criteria, with each offering its own 10-point scale. Raters then offer one overall rating of 1 to 10, which is not cumulative based on the 10 criteria. An average of those overall ratings is calculated to create an annual score for each layout, allowing Golfweek’s Best to rank courses.

The 10 criteria were created to help raters analyze what they just saw and played. The criteria are hyper-focused on the course itself.

Worth noting: There are no perfect 10s. Only eight courses around the world with enough qualifying votes to appear on our top lists in 2024 are rated above a 9. An average rating above 8 indicates an incredible golf course. Anything above a 7 is worth traveling great distances to experience. Courses with an average rating of 6 to 7 are probably the best course in most cities and in several examples are the top layout in an entire state.

These are the best public golf courses in Wisconsin, according to Golfweek

The Wisconsin golf course that hosted the U.S. Open in 2017 is only the sixth best course in the state, according to Golfweek. That's how good the public golf courses are here.

Each year, judges from across the country come together to rate golf courses in each state. A point system, 1 through 10, is used to evaluate various criteria. Once a single overall rating is averaged, then those ratings are put into Golfweek's compiled list of best course rankings.

The courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time — no membership required.

The Lido Golf Course of Sand Valley and the Club of Lac La Belle are two courses new to this year's rankings.

All but one of the courses, Lawsonia in Green Lake, were built on or after 1960.

Three courses at Sand Valley in Nekoosa were listed as top-10 courses nationally among "residential" courses by the same site.

As someone you might call “tech-allergic,” I have long looked to the golf course as a refuge from the chirps and beeps and screens that dominate the rhythms of our day-to-day. When I play the game, I prefer to unplug. So it struck me as ironic when I was asked to test a product designed for golfers who enjoy the whiz-bang extras of the modern age.

Founded in 1999 as a handheld GPS system, GolfLogix , which is owned by GOLF.com’s parent company, has evolved into one of the game’s most downloaded apps for golf statistics and analytics, offering not just personalized data but also detailed course maps to help you plot out every shot. Time was when its intel was accessible only through your cell phone. But no longer. Updates to GolfLogix have made it compatible with the Apple Watch .

As the resident Luddite in the office, I was chosen as a guinea pig.

“Give us your first impressions,” my editor said.

My first impression was that I was not the right guy for the assignment, because, well, I don’t own an Apple Watch . My wife does, though, and borrowing hers was easy enough. So was downloading GolfLogix onto it . A few swipes and clicks and I was good to go. Contained in the app’s digital database are detailed 3D maps of more than 35,000 courses, including my hometown muni in Oakland, Calif. Off I went to take my new tech for a spin.

Standing on the 1st tee of a course I’ve played more times than I can count, I had a pretty good idea what I was in for: a 540-yard, dogleg right par-5, with a cluster of bunkers at the inside bend of its elbow. My watch confirmed that. It said other things as well, providing me with info that I’d never thought to gather. Those bunkers, for instance, started at 242 yards away. To carry them required another 31 yards to a mostly flat fairway whose edges sloped slightly toward the rough.

Like a lot of gizmos these days, GolfLogix gives you distances to every target and hazard, measured faithfully by GPS. But the app doesn’t work strictly by the numbers. It paints vivid pictures, too, showing every hole from various perspectives, including aerial images that capture slope and elevation across every inch of the course. These images are particularly impressive on the greens, where color-coded heat maps, marked arrows, tell you how much and which way the ground is moving. You can even rotate the image so the map of the green aligns with your perspective, and then draw a line that shows precisely how your putt will break.

As I see it, information of this kind is not critically important when you’re playing your home course. But it doesn’t hurt. And it sure comes in handy when you’re pegging it on unfamiliar grounds, where there’s almost no such thing as TMI.

More compelling to me still, though, was a different kind of data. For as much as it tells you about the course you’re playing, GolfLogix also educates you about yourself. In addition to allowing you to tally up your stats (fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts, etc.), the app has a “shot tracker” function, which does just what its name suggests. Activate it after any shot, and it shows precisely how far you hit it. Over time, this feedback gives you a faithful portrait of how you actually play the game, not how you think you play it.

Here’s what goes into the making of a GolfLogix green book

It leaves no room for self-delusion. Like a lot of golfers, I’m guilty of that. Somehow, I’ve convinced myself that I can fly my 7-iron 165 yards. I cannot; 155 yards is more like it. Nor do my best drives carry beyond 240, as I’ve led myself to believe. One round with GolfLogix on my wrist confronted me with these cold, hard truths. There was no ignoring them. From this point on, I plan to use those lessons to refine my club selection and course strategy. Who knows? I might even shoot lower scores.

In golf, as in other areas of life, technology can backfire. Innovations that promise to simplify the game for us can wind up complicating it instead. Time and again I’ve seen this from tech-happy playing partners as they fumble with their phones, searching for this or that piece of info on an app that may or may not pay dividends. The most common result I’ve noticed is slower pace of play.

With the app on an Apple Watch, I dealt with none of that. Gathering info was as quick and easy as checking the time. Navigating was straightforward, too. Switching from one hole to the next, or from one function to another, requires nothing more than the swipe of a finger.

My GolfLogix test run cost me nothing. When you download the app , you get two free trial rounds. After that, you can continue using the app for free, with access to basic features, such as 3D course maps, score and stat tracking, and the opportunity to compete with friends. The other option is an annual membership ($59.99), which provides unlimited access to all the upgraded features, including slope and elevation-adjusted distances, putting alignment and 3D approach views to pinpoint the best place to land your ball.

Old habits die hard, and I still value golf as a tech-free escape. But after playing a round with an all-knowing caddie on my wrist, I appreciate the value of having such a brainy sidekick. Now, if only I can convince my wife to give me her Apple Watch.

After a flight filled with rollicking bachelorette parties and iPad-deprived toddlers, I was ready for a break — and luckily, I got it quickly.

After just a 15-minute car ride from the Punta Cana International Airport, I arrived at Sanctuary Cap Cana, an adults-only, all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic. Soon, I was whisked away via a golf cart to my room in “The Castle,” the Sanctuary’s exclusive section offering a VIP experience.

There, I was greeted by my butler for the duration of my stay, who helped me settle in and unpack and even gave me his phone number in case I needed anything while away from my room. This personal touch helped set the tone for my stay at Sanctuary, a resort that will make you feel like, well, king of the castle while you are here.

Even though it's been open for over a decade, Sanctuary became part of Marriott Bonvoy's All-Inclusive collection in the fall of 2022. Its re-opening was delayed until early 2023 due to the effects of Hurricane Fiona.

Nestled in the heart of the DR, the resort is a private enclave in Punta Cana with 30,000 acres of flawless beaches. Sanctuary Cap Cana

Each room’s fridge has essential snacks and local Dominican beer.
The breakfast buffet is above and beyond what you would expect at an all-inclusive resort, with fresh-fruit smoothies and elevated classics.
For golf enthusiasts, Punta Espada is worth the trip alone.
The spa’s hydrotherapy circuit is the perfect way to unwind after arriving at the resort and to rejuvenate for your stay.

The suites and villas at Sanctuary Cap Cana blend Spanish colonial design with modern elements. Each space includes wooden accents, rattan furniture, and luxurious coral bathrooms. Amenities include private balconies, minibars, espresso machines, and plush bathrobes. Some rooms have swim-up access.

The resort is comprised of 324 rooms and villas with 19 different room sizes and configurations, the smallest of these, the junior suite, is a generous 646 square feet, so space is no issue here.

The property itself is divided into three areas: the “Colonial” section, the “Castle,” and the Villas. The heart of Sanctuary Cap Cana comprises the Colonial section, including all the resort's main buildings.

I stayed in the “Castle” section, a more exclusive resort area with full-time butler service, VIP services, packing and unpacking services, and even a chilled bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival. The butler service is a must for those looking for a personalized experience. Some ground-floor rooms in the Castle area are also connected to a private pool, only accessible to Castle guests, that wraps around the building.

Finally, scattered throughout the property are several villas, the smallest of which starts at just over 1,100 square feet for those who want a larger space or have traveled with a group.

Sanctuary Cap Cana has five restaurants, each with indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy breakfast at Casa Bella, which also offers lunch with a tropical twist; lunch or dinner at Blue Marlin for fresh seafood; Pan-Asian fusion at Wok; prime cuts at The Steakhouse; and Italian cuisine at Capricci. After dinner, head inside to the Love Bar, a piano bar with craft cocktails, or outside to the Ocean Club to have a post-dinner drink with a soundtrack of crashing waves.

Elsewhere on the property, guests can have drinks at one of several other bars open during the day, including Destination Bar, serving up fresh-made smoothies and cocktails, and Freshco Bar, a swim-up bar for replenishing your drinks while at the pool. Keep in mind that the resort maintains a dress code for certain restaurants, with most requiring men to wear long pants, a collared shirt, and closed-toe shoes.

While you may want to flock to one of Sanctuary’s six pools and not move a muscle, the property has plenty of other activities you will want to check out.

The resort offers a range of activities with its all-inclusive package, such as yoga classes, bike tours, beach volleyball, water aerobics, and nightly entertainment. The resort also features a modern gym with plenty of space for working out and includes bikes, weights, and a full lineup of exercise equipment.

Golfers will relish the Punta Espada course designed by Jack Nicklaus, rated the number one golf course in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golfweek Magazine for eight years running.

In addition to the treatments offered, the spa features a hydrotherapy circuit which includes a sauna, hot tub, steam room, cold pool, and dynamic pool to help reinvigorate your body through exposure to various environments and temperatures. The spa also includes a beauty salon as well as a snack bar should you require some fresh fruit or green tea before or after a treatment or soak in the hydrotherapy circuit.

Sanctuary Cap Cana prioritizes sustainability and protecting the environment by using renewable energy sources, conserving local flora and fauna, and operating an on-site organic farm to supply fresh produce to its restaurants.

Sanctuary Cap Cana is located nine miles from Punta Cana International Airport and is a 15-minute taxi ride. Transportation is not included in the all-inclusive package, but the resort can help arrange transportation services for an extra fee. Guest-only parking is available for those renting a car. Guests who choose to play at Punta Espada will have transportation to the greens directly from the resort.

Rooms start at $665 per night, but Sanctuary’s website offers frequent deal packages for multiple nights, which include discounts on spa treatments and other services.
