Jessie diggins claims tour de ski; sophia laukli wins first world cup.

  • OlympicTalk ,
  • OlympicTalk

Jessie Diggins won a second Tour de Ski title and may be en route to the most successful World Cup season in U.S. cross-country skiing history.

Diggins, an Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist, won the Tour de Ski, a Tour de France-like stage competition, by 31.6 seconds combining results from seven days of racing different events.

She powered through the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday after being injured in a crash on Thursday before a rest day.

Fellow American Sophia Laukli won Sunday’s finale, including a 2.2-mile climb up Alpe Cermis in Italy with an average gradient of 11.6 percent. It was Laukli’s first World Cup victory. At 23, she became the youngest U.S. cross-country skier to win a World Cup.

Laukli is a Maine native who is a dual citizen of Norway, where her father is from.

Diggins began the day with a 43-second lead in the Tour standings, greater than the margin separating second place from sixth place. She finished sixth in Sunday’s stage to comfortably win the overall title.

In 2021, Diggins became the first skier outside Europe to win a Tour, which at the time was the biggest individual title of her career. She since won her first two individual Olympic medals (silver and bronze) and last February became the first American to win an individual world title in the sport.

This season, she has three individual World Cup race wins and eight podiums at the midpoint.

By wins and podiums, Kikkan Randall owned the best season by a U.S. cross-country skier before this year — five individual race wins and nine podiums in 2012-13.

Diggins also leads the standings for the World Cup overall title, crowning the world’s best all-around cross-country skier, by 308 points. In 2021, when Diggins became the first American woman to win the overall, her final margin was 268 points.

The Tour de Ski is arguably the crown jewel of this season because there are no Olympics or world championships.

But Diggins has another carrot ahead -- a World Cup stop in her home state of Minnesota from Feb. 17-18. It’s the first cross-country World Cup to be held in the U.S. since 2001.

The 2023/24 Tour de Ski in cross-country skiing is about to begin, and the United States' Jessie Diggins , a previous winner from 2021, is favoured to win the women's title again.

Diggins is the current World Cup overall leader, and with reigning champion Frida Karlsson in doubt due to ongoing illness and form issues, will be tough to dislodge.

The 2021 champion gets her campaign underway alongside everyone else with a sprint race in Toblach, Italy on Saturday, 30 December.

Skiers will compete across seven stages, moving from Toblach to Davos, Switzerland, before the finale on the famously steep and gruelling mass start in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Results from the Tour de Ski will also count towards the World Cup standings.

Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway Trail

Register for free register for free with traillink today, recent trail reviews, perfect for bikepacking.

Rode from Cumberland to a parking area 23 miles outside of DC, camping at four of the campsites along the way. They have been doing a lot of work to improve the condition of this trail and it shows. Weather was perfect, but most sections seemed like they would still be pretty good even after some rain. There was one detour that was a tough push over really rocky roads for a few miles. Other than that, it was perfect.

Torrey C. Brown Trail

This was a ride done during the day prior to a wedding we attended in MD. We picked up the trail on rented bikes by PaperMill Road and headed north. Some of the surface was muddy from heavy rain but still passable. We had lunch at Monkton Hotel. There was a museum too that we were able to tour along the trail. Would recommend being ready for bugs but overall still a great ride.

West bound from Ellensburg. August 2024

We ( recumbent trike & e-bike) headed West from the Kiwanis park. Turned around after 9km as the surface was really tough on the trike. There’s 2 good wheel tracks for bikes, but the trike had to ride partially in the coarse trail ballast. Scenic area with farm views and a huge windmill farm in the distance.

Homeless Encampments Going Into Pittsburgh

I headed out of Pittsburgh Point State Park 8/6/2024 for a day ride to Homestead and back. I quickly ran into large homeless encampments along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail portion of the GAP. No one approached me but the trash, the smell of urine and tents almost on the trail were discouraging and I ended my ride and drove home. I might suggest anyone planning to ride that section of the GAP check the current conditions before proceeding. From what I found online once I got home was that it does not appear to be a short term problem. Other riders have commented on open drug use and the concern for unleashed dogs. I could not find a go around from local riders’ comments.

Kent Island South Trail

Great trail.

Liked the trail very much. However, I’ve seen other maps that show this trail actually begins on the north side of Rt-50 on the westbound side and connects to the trailhead. Is that portion part of this trail? It would make for a much longer route.

Henson Creek Trail

Best trail in PG county hands down.

Easton Rail-Trail

Very lovely in-town trail.

While the trail in town is very lovely, relatively short, it’s very clean and enough meandering through green space, I really enjoy the less known western spur more. That trail spur on the opposite side of Easton Parkway is really awesome. I love riding through the well laid curves and tree canopies. Enough trail benches and smooth pavement. Love it!

A hidden gem

Rode this trail twice this month. Lightly used with only one street crossing. Only encountered one area washed out by the creek that had a gravel bypass. Watch out for a big bump just before a bridge. I hit it going to fast and it took out my front tire. They have added a bike repair station at the Tucker Road Ice Rink with a stand, tools and a pump.

slightly boring

On the way down we rode the rail trail. It’s was 90% trees and concrete path. Hancock was a cute little town tho and we stopped at the Blue Goose Market that was cute. We rode the tow path on the way back and I thought that was slightly better for the scenery. It was a gorgeous day to be out but I’ve been on better trail.

Nice trail for walking and biking

This is a nice trail for walking and biking. There is a good sized parking lot in the Waldorf area and parking along the trail as well. It is definitely worth a visit.

Three Notch Trail

Beautiful country views….

I haven’t seen any recent reviews regarding this location so I wanted to write an update. I am an inline skater & enjoy new trails to try. It’s a beautiful location for the most part. Very quiet & a nice long trail with minimum elevation. It is surrounded by an Omish community, & farmlands throughout the entire route. Although it was beautiful views of the land & farms, it also had downsides. The roads were not very smooth, but still nice enough to skate on. There was animal poop all on the trail you have to avoid if you care about your wheels. It also smells like farmland. Do with that as you wish. Happy Riding!

Amazing trail !

I haven’t anything new so I thought I would add one. I love this route! I am an inline skater and it is a very smooth ride. It is not super crowded & very peaceful. The people are really nice & I never have any issues.

FIS Cross-Country Committee spring meetings in Portorož (SLO)

The FIS Spring Meetings took place from 6 th to 8 th May in Portoroz (SLO). The committee members of the National Ski Federation form the various Sub-Committees and discussed the previously set up proposals.

The Sub Committee for World Cup and Continental Cup as well as Sub Committee for Rules & Control came up with the most prominent proposals of the World Cup calendar 2024/25 and forward as well as current rule changes.

All proposals mentioned are subject to the approval of the FIS Council.

World Cup calendar 2024/25

The calendar for the upcoming season is published as a draft here. Besides the focus on the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim, a first step into a new era for the FIS Tour de Ski is reflected in the calendar.

By following a set calendar framework, the Sub-Committee for World Cup and COC is following a clear standpoint in the aim of keeping World Cup racing affordable, sustainable and healthy for all stakeholders.

Ruka Nordic (FIN) opens the World Cup season traditionally by hosting all three Nordic FIS disciplines of Cross-Country, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined together. Onward the journey goes to Lillehammer (NOR) before heading to central Europe and Davos in Switzerland.

Davos Nordic will celebrate its 50 th anniversary and the FIS Cross-Country family is looking forward to exciting (night) races to celebrate the festivities.

Period II – Tour de Ski

The concept of the COOP FIS Tour de Ski presented by Le Gruyère AOP will undergo a re-evaluation in the next years. Following a more sustainable approach, a first step is on the horizon by holding the 7 competition days in the two traditional italian Tour venues of Toblach and Val di Fiemme.

With the “Tre Cime” race, a special “scenic” course is planned, that can only take place with sufficient natural snow. Another highlight awaits in Val di Fiemme, as for the very first time, the competitions around Lago Tesero will take place on the NEW OLYMPIC COURSES.

Period 3 will mark a return to France and Les Rousses, which saw tremendous success – both in terms of sports and spectatorship – two years ago. From France, the World Cup moves to Engadin (SUI) where a network of the most scenic Cross-Country courses await, before heading back to Nove Mesto (CZE) for its first visit after 5 years.

The last test before the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships is planned in Falun, SWE with sprint C, Interval start C and Mass Start F competitions.

The focus of the upcoming season lies on the title event of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim (NOR) that will take place from 26 th February to 9 th March. All information, ticket sales and schedules can be found on www.trondheim2025.no .

The final period of the World Cup season features the traditional visit to Oslo’s Holmenkollen (NOR) arena – this time however for a 10km Interval start as well as 20km Mass start instead of holding the traditional 50km Mass start. The reason behind this is to avoid a too heavy physical on the athletes with two consecutive 50km races after the World Championships.

Tallin (EST) is looking to welcome the World Cup family again with a big celebration of Cross-Country skiing, before the grand season finals take place in Lahti (FIN). For te first time since 40 years Lahti will host 50 km race as part of the World Cup.

Adjustment of max. altitude

The Cross-Country Committee proposes to the FIS Council that the highest point of a Cross-Country competition can reach up to 2’000m. This altitude adjustment shall be valid for Olympic Winter Games, World Ski Championships, Junior World Ski Championships, and World Cup competitions.
