The 15 courses you can play that have hosted major championships

The U.S. Open returns to one of America’s great golf courses, Pinehurst #2, this week to host its fourth U.S. Open—and the first of five in the next 25 years as a USGA anchor site. Not only is the iconic Donald Ross design one of our country’s greatest, historic venues, but it’s also open to the public—which makes it a rarity among major championship courses. Pinehurst and Pebble Beach have been two mainstays in U.S. championship golf, dating back to Pinehurst #2’s first major, the 1936 PGA Championship.

The PGA Championship frequented publicly accessible courses, particularly in the booming 1920s and 1930s, but it wasn’t until 1972, 77 years after the first U.S. Open, did a public course—Pebble Beach—host the first U.S. Open at a public venue. Then in the 1990s, the vision and relentlessness of the USGA's David Fay took the U.S. Open to Bethpage Black in 2002, which sparked more tournaments at public courses over the next few decades.

We wish the list below was longer, but it would be if some no-longer-running venues were still open. It’s also worth noting that Firestone Country Club , which hosted PGAs in 1960, 1966 and 1975, is now accessible via stay and play deals.

Below are the public courses still in existence that have hosted major championships. It might be hard to check off large lists such as all the top 100 courses in the country, but we’d like to think playing most or all these courses might actually be an attainable goal.

We urge you to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography, drone footage and reviews from our course panelists. Plus, you can now leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … to make your case why your favorite should be ranked higher.

If the 2009 Pete Dye course at this historic resort in southern Indiana ( ranked 118th on America's Second 100 Greatest Courses ) is an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame along the site's elevated bluffs, the 1917 Donald Ross course is more of a street-level tilt-a-whirl with holes that rise, fall and roll repeatedly over a gorgous meadow property. Each nine crests over ridges and ride into hollows, rising toward well-bunkered greens that flank slightly crowned putting surfaces. This is an Old World/New World contrast, with both the Dye and Ross courses achieving what they set out to do architecturally, but in rather different ways. Depending on their mood and appreciation for allowing land movements rather than bulldozers to dictate design and direction, golfer's at French Lick often prefer the nuance and nature of the Ross course. The Dye course hosted the 1924 PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen.

PGA Tour Championship Winners and History

tour championship course history

The final event of the PGA Tour season the Tour Championship has since 2007 been the final event in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

When it debuted in 1987, the PGA Tour Championship featured the top 30 players from the year’s money list. The tournament took place in November, just after the corresponding event on the European Tour. The event finalized the money list for the season.

To avoid the college and football seasons, the 2019 Tour Championship has been pushed up to August from September, where it had been scheduled since 2007.

The 2019 edition introduces other changes as well. First, the FedEx Cup playoffs were truncated from four events to three. Thirty players still qualify for the event, however.

Second, the confusing points system has been modified to give players “strokes” heading into the tournament. The playoff leader, for example, will start at -10. The second place player starts at -8. The third seed is at -7; fourth at -6; the fifth at -5. Seeds 6 – 10 begin the tournament at -4; 11 – 15 at -3; 16 – 20 at -2; 21-25 at -1. Seeds 26 – 30 start at even par.

The new system is both easier to understand and eliminates the possibility of having one player win the Tour Championship and another win the Fedex Cup. (for example, in 2008, the Tour Championship was won by Camilo Villegas, while Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup. In 2009, Phil Mickelson won the Tour Championship, while Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup.)

In the COVID year of 2020, the PGA TOUR Championship was rescheduled from August 27 – 30 to September 4 – 7.

A complete list of PGA TOUR Championship Winners follows. Beginning in 2019, the score displayed is in relation to par: -total with strokes (-actual to par)

Golf With a Purpose

East Lake Golf Club

Located in Atlanta, Georgia, East Lake Golf Club is the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta and where legendary golfer Bobby Jones learned the game. The Club is not only historic, but philanthropic as well. Proceeds from Club operations support several charitable partners, including the East Lake Foundation, which has helped transform one of the nation’s worst public housing projects into a thriving community. Since 2005, East Lake has been the permanent home of the TOUR Championship, the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup.

A legendary golf course

Established in 1904, East Lake was originally designed by architect Tom Bendelow. His design, which took three years to complete, was short lived. In 1913, the Club hired Donald Ross to completely rework the Bendelow design. Over the years, Ross’ routing remained basically intact. George Cobb did some work in 1959 in preparation for the Club to host the Ryder Cup in 1963. After years of neglect, Rees Jones restored East Lake in 1993. In 2023, architect Andrew Green will lead a complete renovation of the course, using previously unknown photos as design inspiration.

The Tour Championship

August 28 - September 1, 2024

East Lake Golf Club has been the permanent home of the TOUR Championship since 2005. The tournament was first played at East Lake in 1998 and has been held at East Lake 23 times since then. The TOUR Championship is the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup, with only the top 30 players on the points list qualifying each year. The 2023 TOUR Championship and FedEx Cup Champion is Viktor Hovland.

Diamond Woods Golf Course

Diamond Woods is family owned and operated, with a history that dates back to the early 80s. Below are five facts highlighting our 20+ years in business.

  • Diamond Woods is owned and operated by two brothers, Jeff and Greg Doyle, who bought the land in 1984.
  • Jeff Doyle played for two major league baseball teams in two different countries, for the St. Louis Cardinals (1983) in the U.S. and the Nankai Hawks (1984, 85) in Japan, earning the money to buy the land the course was built on.
  • Greg Doyle worked on the construction and was irrigation specialist for fellow Oregon courses Pumpkin Ridge and Trysting Tree.
  • Greg quit his job to build and design the course in 1994 , opening the first nine in 1997 and the second in 1998.
  • The name “Diamond Woods” is an amalgamation of two things that made building the golf course possible–“diamond” in reference to our baseball history and “woods” in memory of the Woods family who sold us the property.

The Best Moments in Valhalla History

2014 PGA Championship - Final Round

The PGA of America has so much rich history at Valhalla Golf Club, with the club hosting its seventh big event in the last three decades when the PGA Championship rolls into Louisville next week.

Mark Brooks topped Kenny Perry in a playoff to decide the 1996 PGA Championship, and four years later, in 2000, Tiger Woods beat Bob May in an epic playoff. It was Woods’ fifth major title and third straight. Rory McIlroy topped Phil Mickelson by a shot in near darkness in 2014, which remains his last major championship title.

Two Senior PGA Championships have produced close results with Hale Irwin beating Jay Hass by a shot in 2004 and Tom Watson defeating David Eger in a playoff in 2011. The United States beat Europe decisively to win the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla with Paul Azinger as the Captain of the Americans.

With so many incredible memories at Valhalla over the years, here are the 10 best moments in the history of Championship golf at the famed club.

1996: Kentucky’s Russ Cochran shoots course record to take 54-hole lead

Russ Cochran, from 200 miles away in Paducah, Kentucky, dazzled his home crowds with a sensational third-round 65 that set a Valhalla course record. He was in control all day, made seven birdies, including a final one from 8 feet on the par-5 18th hole. He held the 54-hole lead by two shots over Mark Brooks and Vijay Singh. Steve Elkington, Phil Mickelson and Nick Price were only three shots behind.

“You never know when a great round is going to come up,” Cochran said. “But I never would have thought I would be leading.”

Unfortunately for the left-hander, he followed the record round with a Sunday 77 and dropped into a tie for 17th place. Brooks topped another Kentuckian, Kenny Perry, on the first hole of a playoff.

1996: Mark Brooks tops Kentucky’s Kenny Perry

Home state favorite Kenny Perry took a two-shot lead into the 72nd hole over Mark Brooks but failed to get up and down on the last for par and made bogey. Nearly 30 minutes later, Brooks was coming up the 18th needing to make birdie to push the championship into a playoff. Rather than hitting balls at the practice range, Perry was watching Brooks from the 18th hole television tower. Brooks got up and down from the front greenside bunker for birdie, then in the playoff made another birdie after Perry hit both his first and second shots into the thick rough, left of the fairway.

“I’ve learned a lot of about life through golf,” an emotional Brooks said. “That’s what today was all about. Fighting through the bad and knowing something good is at the end.”

2000: Jack Nicklaus birdies the last hole of his final PGA Championship Playing with Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh, 60-year-old Jack Nicklaus hit a pitching wedge to inside 3 feet on the par-5 18th hole and closed out his illustrious PGA Championship career with a birdie to shoot 1-under 71. The five-time PGA champion only missed the cut by one shot, but waved to the adoring fans as he walked off the 18th green. When Woods would shake Nicklaus’ hand after the round you could see him say, “that was awesome.” Two days later Woods won the title in a playoff over Bob May.

2000: Tiger Woods walks in birdie putt in playoff

One of the most famous putts Tiger Woods ever made and you’ve likely seen it hundreds of times in the past 24 years. Woods and Bob May were on the first of three playoff holes to decide the championship. May had just hit a magnificent chip to tap-in range to secure a par and Woods was standing over his birdie attempt from 25 feet. He took the stroke and, when the ball was 3 feet from the cup, Woods started running after it while pointing. He knew it was going in. It was the only birdie either man would make during the playoff.

“This is one of the greatest duels I’ve ever had in my life, and I’ve had a few,” Woods said afterward.

2000: Bob May makes birdie to get into playoff with Tiger Woods

Bob May had some work to do just to get into the historic playoff with Tiger Woods. He hit his approach on the par-5 18th hole 16 feet past the hole and knew that he needed to make it, although Woods was still facing a birdie putt of 6 feet himself. With thousands surrounding the green, May calmly hit the putt, looking for a moment like the ball was going to miss right before it dove back left and into the hole. Woods, of course, then made his birdie putt, threw two trademark fist pumps and went on to win his third straight major title and second PGA Championship.

2004: Hale Irwin birdies the last to win fourth Senior PGA

A weather-plagued week saw the Senior PGA Championship delayed five different times. But on the final green, Hale Irwin two-putted from 40 feet for birdie to capture his 40th PGA Tour Champions victory, his fourth Senior PGA Championship title and his seventh senior Major. Co-leader Jay Haas, playing in his first senior event, missed a 10-footer for birdie on the 18th green while Irwin watched from back in the fairway. Irwin won by one shot.

“I’m proud, I’m relieved and I’m glad it’s over,” Irwin said. “It’s been an awkward week for everyone.”

Unbeaten and bringing the enthusiasm 🐴 Boo Weekley was having fun at the 2008 Ryder Cup. #MondayMemories pic.twitter.com/8vNse0PE9R — Ryder Cup (@rydercup) March 6, 2023

2008: Boo Weekley does his best Happy Gilmore impression The Americans were up 9-7 over the Europeans heading into Sunday singles of the Ryder Cup and Anthony Kim got off to a hot start in the first match against Sergio Garcia. The locals, however, were particularly interested in the middle of the lineup where Kentucky natives Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes were in spots five and seven. But in between them was Boo Weekley, the fun-loving character from the Florida Panhandle. He was matched against Oliver Wilson. Weekley smoked his drive off the first tee, then, just like Adam Sandler in “Happy Gilmore,” proceeded to ride his driver like a horse, galloping off the tee box. It was quite the scene at the time and has remained in Ryder Cup lore. Weekley won his match 4 and 2.

“I felt like I just had to do it to loosen it up a little bit,” he said.

72nd Senior PGA Championship

2011: Tom Watson wins second Senior PGA in playoff

Tom Watson and David Eger found themselves in a playoff to determine the championship, but only after both missed short birdie putts on the 72nd hole. Eger pulled a 6-footer and Watson, then 61, pushed his from 4 feet. So they went back to the 18th tee for sudden-death. Watson’s second shot on the par-5 found the front greenside bunker and Eger hit his third shot, a pitching wedge, to 10 feet. Eger missed his putt, Watson got up and down from the bunker – making the putt from only 3 feet – and he captured his second Senior PGA Championship. At the time he was the oldest player to win a major since the PGA Tour Champions was created back in 1980.

“These young kids coming out there hitting the ball so much farther than I do and, you know, their nerves are pretty much still intact,” Watson said. “They don’t have the aches and pains and I’ve been lucky with that, but I’m starting to get a few aches and pains and I feel very fortunate to have won. Very, very fortunate.”

2014: Rory McIlroy’s dramatic win in the dark

Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson were in the penultimate group teeing off on the 18th hole with the final pairing, Rory McIlroy and Bernd Weisberger, waiting behind. Mickelson and Fowler trailed McIlroy by two shots. Moments after Fowler and Mickelson walked off the tee box they were alerted that McIlroy and Weisberger were going to hit their tee shots because it was getting dark and there was threatening weather. Mickelson and Fowler then hit their second shots first and walked toward the green and were told that McIlroy and Weisberger were going to hit up again. Mickelson nearly holed his chip for eagle, which would’ve forced McIlroy to make birdie to win. It was a wild, memorable scene and remains the last major championship that McIlroy has won.

“I suggested we play up as a four,” McIlroy said. “I didn’t know if they wanted to do that or not. You know, to get this thing finished and get this thing over and done with, and the guys let us play up with our drives and they didn’t need to do that. They could’ve just left us on the tee box there and just play normally, but they showed a lot of class and a lot of sportsmanship by doing that.”

2023 Tour Championship odds, course history and picks to win

We’ve arrived at the final event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season, the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. The top 30 in the point standings have made their way to the ATL ready to battle for the $18 million FedEx Cup bonus awarded to the winner.

After his co-runner-up finish at the BMW Championship, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will begin the tournament at 10 under, two shots clear of the man in the No. 2 spot, Viktor Hovland. Rory McIlroy, who has now finished T-9 or better in nine straight starts after a solo fourth at Olympia Fields, will begin three back at 7 under, while Jon Rahm starts at 6 under.

McIlroy chased down Scheffler last year to claim his third FedEx Cup, the only player who has achieved that feat (Tiger Woods and McIlroy are the only two players to win it more than once).

Betting preview

Staggered-start leaderboard, odds (including starting strokes), xander schauffele (+900, without starting strokes).

Schauffele will tee off Thursday seven shots behind Scheffler. It’s tough to see any scenario where he catches the Texan. However, most sportsbooks will have a “Winner without starting strokes” category.

This is where we can grab Schauffele.

In four appearances since the staggered start was introduced, Schauffele has finished 2nd (’19), 1st (’20), 3rd (’21) and 6th (’22) at East Lake without the strokes applied.

Long story short, this man dominates East Lake. You gotta have him on your card somewhere this week.

Rory McIlroy (+330)

Yes, I pick him every week. Get over it.

Since the staggered start began in 2019, McIlroy has won the event twice (’19 and ’22 without the strokes applied) and won the FedEx Cup both times.

He’ll begin three shots back, but McIlroy is used to chasing in Atlanta. In 2019, he started five back, and last year he began six back.

Max Homa (+1400, without starting strokes)

Homa finished third (without the starting strokes) at the 2022 Tour Championship, his first trip to East Lake.

He’s in great form, finishing T-6 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T-5 at the BMW Championship in his last two starts.

Like with the Schauffele pick, Homa is probably starting too far back (4 under) to love him outright. However, his odds are 14/1 without the starting strokes. Love that for the card.

The latest signature event on the PGA Tour schedule is here as the best players in the world have made their way to Dublin, Ohio, for the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. This is the final event before all eyes turn to Pinehurst No. 2 for the 2024 U.S. Open, the third men’s major championship of the year.

Defending champion Viktor Hovland is hoping to go back-to-back but will have to fend off a stacked field that includes world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas, among others.

The winner at Jack’s Place will earn $4 million of the $20 million purse and 700 FedEx Cup points. There will be a 36-hole cut made Friday afternoon with the top 50 and ties and everyone within 10 shots of the lead making it to the weekend.

Picks to win

Rory mcilroy (9/1).

2024 RBC Canadian Open

Surprise, surprise, Rory McIlroy is back on my card this week (and he’ll probably be there again at Pinehurst).

Since winning the Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy has tied for 12th at the PGA Championship and fourth at the RBC Canadian Open.

In his last three appearances at the Memorial, the Northern Irishman has finished T-7 (2023), T-18 (2022) and T-18 (2021). He was in Sunday’s final group last year before a final-round 75.

McIlroy has played the week before every major dating back to last year’s Open (three occasions). He won the 2023 Scottish Open, finished solo third at the 2024 Valero Texas Open and won the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Max Homa (40/1)

2024 Charles Schwab Challenge

He may not be playing his best golf at the moment, but getting a player of Homa’s pedigree at 40/1 is hard to pass up.

After finishing T-8 at the Wells Fargo Championship and T-35 at the PGA Championship, Homa missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge thanks to a first-round birdie-free 78 (he came back and shot 1-under 69 on Friday).

The 10th-ranked player in the world missed the cut at Jack’s Place in 2020 but has since finished T-6 (2021) and T-5 (2022).

Sam Burns (45/1)

tour championship course history

Burns has finished T-13 at the Wells Fargo Championship and T-10 at the RBC Canadian Open over his last three starts (MC at the PGA Championship).

At last year’s Memorial, Burns tied for 16th.

Stephan Jaeger (110/1)

tour championship course history

Before finishing 76th at the PGA Championship thanks to a 7-over final round, Jaeger finished T-21 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T-20 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and T-18 at the RBC Heritage.

Jaeger ranked 155th in driving distance during the 2021-22 season, but fast forward to 2024 and he’s currently 17th on Tour which will help around the 7,500-yard-plus Muirfield.

At his Memorial debut, Jaeger finished T-24 last season.

Lee Hodges (180/1)

tour championship course history

If you’re looking for a long-shot pick to sprinkle this week, I like Lee Hodges.

In his last three starts, Hodges has finished T-24 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T-12 at the PGA Championship and T-12 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

At his Memorial debut in 2023, Hodges tied for 12th (he shot a final-round 4-over 76).
