In our wider review of the best travel totes on the market, we named Cuyana’s System Tote our best overall option. After the brand’s recent debut of the Easy Travel Tote, we decided to test it to see how it compares.

As a frequent traveler, I’m always looking for a tote that is both durable enough to carry heavy items like my laptop, chargers and tablet as well as stylish enough to bring to lunch or dinner after getting off a plane or train. Cuyana, a women-owned clothing and accessories brand known for its long-lasting quality, wearability and design, has been a staple of my travels for the past few years (the Travel Beauty Roll comes with me on every trip), so my ears perked up when I heard of the brand’s latest release, the Easy Travel Tote .

I had heard raves from friends and coworkers about Cuyana’s bags, including the System Tote , which we named the best travel tote in our larger review. Made from double-sided Italian leather that softens over time, Cuyana’s bags are investments that are built to last. With multiple trips each month, I often burn through luggage and bags (airport baggage carousels can really do some damage), so I was especially into the idea of having a bag that can withstand my heavy travel schedule, and decided to put the Easy Travel Tote to the test on a weekend road trip.

Like many of Cuyana’s bags , the Easy Travel Tote is made from buttery, pebbled Italian leather. I’m a big fan of leather bags since faux leather can often give off a very chemical or plastic smell. The Easy Travel Tote has a warm, earthy and high-quality leather scent that I noticed as soon as I opened it.

The tote has a deep interior with two large pockets on each side that are spacious enough to hold a pair of headphones, chargers or tablet case. While the interior pockets are not zippered, I do appreciate that this bag has a zippered top, which means I don’t have to worry about items flying out of my bag during bumpy rides or flights (yes, this has happened to me before).

The Easy Travel Tote is the newest travel tote from women-owned clothing and accessories bag Cuyana.

Functional, Versatile And Durable

Because I was only going on a weekend trip, I decided to use the Easy Travel Tote as my primary bag and see how much I could fit inside of it. After inspecting its interior, I knew I could easily put all of its 37 liters of volume to good use. It’s several inches larger and wider than the Classic Easy Zipper Tote , which is the next size down, so I could seamlessly slide in my 16-inch laptop, tablet, all of my chargers, several tops and bottoms, a denim jacket, a pair of shoes and my purse, meaning I didn’t need to bring a suitcase on this trip. Better yet, the tote didn’t feel clunky or look oddly shaped when I picked it up, so I was able to bring it with me to a restaurant for lunch without any issues.

Another great feature of this bag is its versatility. I used a wide shoulder strap , which is sold separately, to sling the bag over my shoulders, making it easy to carry around everywhere. I could also see myself using this tote on commuter days when I’m bouncing around from the gym to dinner and need to bring along my laptop; its chic exterior lets it blend into different environments, from a train station to hang-outs with friends.

Cuyana Easy Travel Tote: The Final Verdict

After testing Cuyana’s Easy Travel Tote, I can attest to its quality, durability and style. I was able to fit so much inside of it, and it didn’t take up too much space in the trunk of my car. I also found it to be incredibly comfortable: its straps made it easy to sling over my shoulder and carry around shops and restaurants. However, for flights, I would have loved to see this bag include at least one external pocket for easy access to my passport. I also fear that with as much as I packed in it, its lack of trolley sleeve would make it balance very precariously on the top of my suitcase. And at $428, this bag is certainly a splurge, especially when you consider that all of its accessories are sold separately (the adjustable wide strap I used is $88).

Yet for frequent travelers like myself, this bag delivers. It can easily be used as a gym bag, diaper bag, commuter bag and a personal item on a flight, which means you’ll get a lot of use out of it. And its high-quality leather exterior not only allows it to hold plenty of items while still looking stylish (no easy feat), but it will keep its shape and luster for years to come, making this tote a worthy investment.

A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday agreed to review a lower court ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue to prosecute the election interference case she brought against former President Donald Trump.

Trump and some other defendants in the case had tried to get Willis and her office removed from the case, saying her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade created a conflict of interest. Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee in March found that no conflict of interest existed that should force Willis off the case, but he granted a request from Trump and the other defendants to seek an appeal of his ruling from the Georgia Court of Appeals.

That intermediate appeals court agreed on Wednesday to take up the case. Once it rules, the losing side could ask the Georgia Supreme Court to consider an appeal.

The appeals court’s decision to consider the case seems likely to cause a delay in a case and further reduce the possibility that it will get to trial before the November general election, when Trump is expected to be the Republican nominee for president.

In his order, McAfee said he planned to continue to address other pretrial motions "regardless of whether the petition is granted ... and even if any subsequent appeal is expedited by the appellate court." But Trump and the others could ask the Court of Appeals to stay the case while the appeal is pending.

McAfee wrote in his order in March that the prosecution was "encumbered by an appearance of impropriety." He said Willis could remain on the case only if Wade left, and the special prosecutor submitted his resignation hours later.

The allegations that Willis had improperly benefited from her romance with Wade resulted in a tumultuous couple of months in the case as intimate details of Willis and Wade's personal lives were aired in court in mid-February. The serious charges in one of four criminal cases against the Republican former president were largely overshadowed by the love lives of the prosecutors.

Trump and 18 others were indicted in August, accused of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally try to overturn his narrow 2020 presidential election loss to Democrat Joe Biden in Georgia.

All of the defendants were charged with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, law, an expansive anti-racketeering statute. Four people charged in the case have pleaded guilty after reaching deals with prosecutors. Trump and the others have pleaded not guilty.

Trump and other defendants had argued in their appeal application that McAfee was wrong not to remove both Willis and Wade, writing that "providing DA Willis with the option to simply remove Wade confounds logic and is contrary to Georgia law."

The allegations against Willis first surfaced in a motion filed in early January by Ashleigh Merchant, a lawyer for former Trump campaign staffer and onetime White House aide Michael Roman. The motion alleged that Willis and Wade were involved in an inappropriate romantic relationship and that Willis paid Wade large sums for his work and then benefitted when he paid for lavish vacations.

Willis and Wade acknowledged the relationship but said they didn’t begin dating until the spring of 2022, after Wade was hired in November 2021, and their romance ended last summer. They also testified that they split travel costs roughly evenly, with Willis often paying expenses or reimbursing Wade in cash.

Jefferson Parish authorities are searching for information in connection with an animal cruelty case.

Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services shared on Facebook that officials with the department have had to respond to two instances of iguanas being found bound and abandoned in the parish.

The first iguana was found bound with zip ties in Kenner on April 15. The second iguana was found bound with tape and died, according to the post by animal welfare services.

The first iguana is expected to recover.

Gag order in sex harassment case found unconstitutional by state’s high court, adding victim has right to speak freely

The New Jersey Supreme Court on Monday unanimously struck down confidentiality rules that prohibited a state employee from talking to others about a sex harassment complaint she had filed against a supervisor while the matter was under investigation.

Calling the regulation “unconstitutionally overbroad,” the court said the scope of the rule would “cause countless victims and witnesses to surrender their protected right to speak freely about harassment and discrimination.”

Writing for the court, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner said the state Constitution guaranteed an affirmative right to speak freely that is broader than the protections in the First Amendment.

“The guarantee extends to victims of harassment and discrimination who have a right to speak out about what happened to them,” Rabner noted in the opinion. “Although the regulation seeks to advance legitimate interests — to protect the integrity of the investigation, minimize the risk of retaliation and protect the important privacy interests of all concerned, it reaches too far in trying to achieve those aims and chills constitutionally protected speech.”

At issue was a complaint filed by Viktoriya Usachenok , who filed an internal complaint in 2016 with the Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) office in the Department of the Treasury where she then worked, alleging a hostile work environment. She accused a supervisor of “pervasive sexual harassment” that included stalking, sexual propositioning, unwelcome gifts, physical touching, and assault.

The supervisor, she said, also often claimed he had close relationships with powerful people within the New Jersey government and that he was “a very connected person.”

In a subsequent 2017 lawsuit, she complained that she had been told by an investigator that she would be required to sign a confidentiality form and could be fired if she disclosed any aspect of the investigation to anyone.

At the time the rules regarding the investigation of discrimination and harassment in public employment required total confidentiality. Those interviewed were directed “not to discuss any aspect of the investigation with others,” or face disciplinary action.

Usachenok’s attorney, Christopher Eibeler of Smith Eibeler in Holmdel, argued that such rules governing confidentiality in state workplace investigations served to silence victims and witnesses from coming forward about assault, harassment or discrimination in the workplace. Her lawsuit also claimed the rules were at odds with Gov. Phil Murphy’s approval of a law he later signed banning employers from using non-disclosure agreements .

While the matter was still being litigated in Superior Court, the state Civil Service Commission amended state regulations to say that investigators could “request” rather than “direct” confidentiality by anyone interviewed in such matters, and to remove the threat of disciplinary action if they didn’t comply.

Under the revisions, investigators could explain to people during an investigation why it was important not to disclose any aspect of the investigation to other people without a legitimate justification.

The Civil Service commission argued that the purpose was to ensure the personal and/or the privacy interests of a complainant and/or witnesses were not thwarted during the investigative process “and to maintain the integrity of the investigation.” It also maintained that eliminating the penalty provision would avoid “a chilling effect on potential claimants.”

Following the Civil Service action, the state then moved to dismiss Usachenok’s appeal. Eibeler, however, argued that the confidentiality language of the statute — even in its current form — still created an unconstitutional restraint of a state employee’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech, while violating the legislative intent behind New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination.

Dismissing Usachenok’s appeal, an appellate panel later determined that “a request for confidentiality promotes a fair investigatory process that protects both the accuser and the accused while respecting the free-speech rights of all participating in an investigation.”

That ruling was then appealed to the state Supreme Court.

In his briefs before the court, Eibeler said the state’s confidentiality regulation was far more restrictive of employee’s rights than what was adopted by the National Labor Relations Board.

The state argued that the appellate court got it right.

“It is not a ‘confidentiality directive’ containing ‘broad restrictions on speech,’” said the state Attorney General’s office. “Nor does it represent harassment in the form of an imposition of confidentiality. Rather, as a ‘request,’ the employee is free to disregard it and speak as they wish, without fear of reprisal or discipline.”

The high court, in its opinion, found the regulation to be “unconstitutionally overbroad.”

What the regulation leaves out, the justices added, was significant.

“It does not require that victims be told they are free to decline to follow the request. They are not told they can consult with an attorney about it. Nor are they told there will be no repercussions if they exercise their protected right to free speech,” they wrote. “Viewed as a whole, the unadorned language of the regulation extends quite broadly.”

While they acknowledged that the state correctly pointed out that the amended regulation no longer directed victims and witnesses not to speak about investigations — that it instead “requests them” not to do so — it said the way the request must be conveyed exacerbated its potential to chill protected speech.

“There is an inherent power imbalance here between the investigator who makes the request and the witness who hears it. Investigators speak on behalf of an agency of the state. Beyond that, victims and witnesses dependent on their employer can reasonably be concerned they may face consequences if they fail to comply,” they said.

In the wake of the ruling, Usachenok’s attorney said victims of discrimination should never be silenced.

“For far too long, New Jersey state government has employed unconstitutional confidentiality directives that have gagged victims and witnesses from speaking freely about incidents of sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace,” remarked Eibeler. “We are pleased the highest court intervened and put an end today to this unlawful practice.”

The state Attorney General’s Office declined comment on the ruling.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

The quality feels a bit lower than other cases we tried.

When we shook the case, all of the jewelry remained packed away in its original spot without any damage occurring. It is on the small side with minimum space for studs, but light packers will appreciate the hard, durable exterior that still looks new after six months. The genuine leather exterior and suede interior feels luxurious and looks elegant, so this also makes a great jewelry case for newlyweds going on a honeymoon . We especially love the tiny zippered pocket in the middle of the case for storing extra small jewelry items like studs or stacking rings.

The organizational features could be better and, after six months of use, we think it's a bit too large to pack in a carry-on.

Paravel is one of our favorite luggage brands , so we’re pleased to report that its jewelry case impressed us, too. The circular case is made entirely of recycled materials from post-consumer plastic water bottles and upcycled zippers to create an eco-friendly accessory for travel. Besides the sustainability factor, the case comes with a large drawstring pouch that makes it easy to drop in larger pieces of jewelry like bracelets or watches. The top flap of the case has a ring holder and earring post to store smaller pieces of jewelry, but we wish there were a few more organization features like necklace latches or zippered pockets. However, we love the vintage-style design and, like most Paravel bags, you can monogram the case with initials for a special touch.

Other Travel Jewelry Cases We Liked

The jewelry cases below get an honorable mention since they still performed well in testing, but fell slightly short compared to our top performers.

Benevolence Plush Velvet Travel Jewelry Box Organizer : This jewelry box can fit a ton of items, but you’ll want to make sure everything is secure before traveling since we noticed most of the jewelry became dislodged during testing.

Mejuri Travel Case : The case looks elegant and sleek on the outside, but the interior doesn’t offer much in the organizational department, so it’s best for minimalist travelers.

After thoroughly researching jewelry cases from trusted brands, we selected 25 options to first test out in our New York City lab. We packed each case with every type of jewelry you can think of, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more to get a feel for the usefulness of the organization features. Then, we tossed, dropped, and shook the cases (think Kourtney Kardashian level of salad bowl shaking) to see if the jewelry remained safely secured in place or if the pieces moved around. We also examined the cases for any scuffing or damage.

With our lab testing portion complete, we then rated the jewelry cases based on ease of use, capacity, design, and quality to determine the winners. We will continue to test the jewelry cases for an additional six months so we can see how each one performs while traveling in a more natural setting after the lab testing.

Tips for Buying a Jewelry Case

Buy the right size case.

First, you’ll want to think about how much jewelry you travel with to determine the best size for your needs. For those who travel with bigger pieces of jewelry like watches or chunky necklaces, consider getting a more structured case with large compartments. Delicate or minimalist jewelry will pack better in an envelope or binder style of jewelry case. And if your jewelry collection consists of just a few pieces, opt for a mini jewelry case to save space in your luggage.

Consider organization

Most jewelry cases come with latches, hooks, pockets, and pillows to hold pretty much any piece of jewelry you can think of. Like other types of travel organizers , some jewelry cases are more barebones than others, so you’ll want to buy a case according to your organization preferences or based on the type of jewelry you travel most with. If most of your jewelry consists of earrings, be sure to get a box that has pockets and hole cards with spots for hoops, studs, and dangling earrings.

California supreme court to hear arguments on taxpayer protection act.

The California Supreme Court this week will hear oral arguments on the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act, as the state's highest court determines whether to strip the proposal from the November ballot.

The " Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act " attempts to give voters more power in the process when state and local leaders raise taxes and fees. The measure requires voters to have final approval on future taxes and fees imposed by state and local governments and would also cancel new taxes and fees imposed starting in 2022 unless approved by voters within a year of the act going into effect.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Wednesday at 9 a.m. in San Francisco.

The measure, which is backed by business and taxpayer advocacy groups, gathered enough signatures and became eligible for the 2024 ballot early last year. According to the Secretary of State's office, the measure gathered 1,075,585 valid signatures.

The state's highest court agreed to make the consideration after the governor and Democratic legislative leaders in September urged the court to immediately remove it from the ballot before voters have a chance to decide. They argued it could hamper state and local government's ability to pay for key services provided to taxpayers, from trash collection to public safety.

As the court decides whether to take the measure off the ballot, it wants to know two things: First, would the measure change the state constitution in a way that it's not allowed to do? And second, would it impair essential government functions?

The California Legislature is named as a primary petitioner in the case, even though all 120 lawmakers did not vote or agree to be part of the lawsuit. The Legislature does not have a formal process to determine when it gets involved in litigation. Its involvement in the lawsuit required Democratic legislative leaders to hire outside attorneys using taxpayer dollars.

In response to a Legislative Open Records Act request late last year, legislative officials provided documents to KCRA 3 showing the Legislature had spent $37,500 in attorney fees to Olson Remcho LLP, a Sacramento-based law firm, for representation in this case.

The federal judge in Florida presiding over the classified documents prosecution of former President Donald Trump has canceled the May 20 trial date, postponing it indefinitely.

The order from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon had been expected in light of still-unresolved issues in the case and because Trump is currently on trial in a separate case in Manhattan charging him in connection with hush money payments during the 2016 presidential election. The New York case involves several of the same lawyers representing him in the federal case in Florida.

Cannon said in a five-page order Tuesday that it would be “imprudent” to finalize a new trial date now, casting further doubt on federal prosecutors' ability to bring Trump to trial before the November presidential election.

Trump faces dozens of felony counts accusing him of illegally hoarding at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida classified documents that he took with him after he left the White House in 2021, and then obstructing the FBI's efforts to get them back. He has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing.

Trump faces four criminal cases as he seeks to reclaim the White House, but outside of the New York prosecution, it's not clear that any of the other three will reach trial before the election.

The Supreme Court is weighing Trump’s arguments that he is immune from federal prosecution in a separate case from special counsel Jack Smith charging him with plotting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia have also brought a separate case related to election subversion, though it's not clear when that might reach trial.
