Tina – The Tina Turner Musical

Ruva Ngwenya’s powerful performance as Tina Turner is a revelation in this flawed but fierce biographic jukebox musical

Travis Johnson

Time Out says

After an unforgettable run that saw 301 performances and 301 standing ovations,  Tina – The Tina Turner Musical  is preparing to take the final bow of its Syndey season on Sunday, January 28, 2024. The show is a record-breaker for Theatre Royal Sydney , becoming the longest-running production since the iconic venue’s reopening and shattering sales records during its launch in May 2023. The national tour kicks off in Perth in February, followed by seasons in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne.   Read on for our critic's review...

Australia loves Tina Turner – the one-two punch of her appearance, both in the film and on the soundtrack of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and the use of her cover of Bonnie Tyler’s The Best to promote the NRL back in the day made sure of that. Will they love Tina , the acclaimed jukebox musical based on her life and, naturally enough, packed with her tunes? Well, yes, probably – as long as your appreciation of that music outweighs the shortcomings of the writing.

That writing is by Pulitzer-winner Katori Hall, along with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, but as a piece of drama Tina struggles to encompass the life of its subject. We begin in Tina’s childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee, when the pre-fame protagonist – then simply Anna Mae Bullock – was deserted by her mother (Ibinabo Jack). We then follow her through her soaring career and abusive, drug-sodden relationship with Ike Turner (a role carried well by Tim Omaji), her eventual break from him, forays into solo work, and ultimately her ascent into superstardom under the stewardship of Australian manager, Roger Davies (Mat Verevis, doubling down on Australianisms), along the way finding love with German PR rep Erwin Bach (Matthew Prime). They’re still together, as it happens, and both are executive producers here.

Ruva Ngwenya is revelatory, fully embodying the real deal’s strength, charisma, power, and talent.

The issue is that Tina has difficulty covering so much territory, even at two hours and 45 minutes (interval included), which means that Act One gallops through the decades, each short interstitial scene between musical numbers being reduced to largely expository dialogue as characters clue us in as to where we are in the story. Add to that the fact that the story covers so much dark, serious territory – domestic violence and abuse, drugs, endemic racism, attempted suicide – and it feels at times that those themes are being treated lightly. They’re the price we have to grudgingly pay to get to the good stuff, and the show gets them out of the way quickly and efficiently, but sacrifices emotional impact to do so – compare the result to what we’ve read in Turner’s three autobiographies, or in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It?

But then we do get to the good stuff, which is the music – and, based solely on its songs, Tina is an all-timer. How could it not be? ‘Proud Mary’, ‘River Deep - Mountain High’, ‘Private Dancer’, ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’ – we even get ‘The Best’ and Thunderdome’s ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ for extra local appeal, with 23 songs in total over the course of the show. The second act improves on the first, not having to cover so much and instead focusing on Turner’s rise from Vegas perennial to stadium-filling rock goddess.

As the adult Tina, Ruva Ngwenya is revelatory, fully embodying the real deal’s strength, charisma, power, and talent. Here we follow the creation of ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’, the lead single off turner’s comeback album Private Dancer . Director Leah Howard and music director Christine Polimos do something clever here, taking us through several iterations of the signature tune before revealing it as the powerhouse ballad we all know. Turner’s ascension to stadium status is accompanied by the show’s band taking the stage, the final movements of the show more tribute act than musical – which brought the packed opening night audience to its feet.

Set and costume designer Mark Thompson keeps the former spare and the latter flashy, letting a simple, elegant backdrop and a few props set each scene, helped by projections by Jeff Sugg and impactful washes of light by Bruno Poet. The occasional use of a revolving stage element is the only noticeable flourish, but the clear intent to foreground performance, and the songs pay dividends. Anthony Van Laast’s choreography is exciting, reaching a crescendo of referential movements by the explosive final act.

Tina is flawed, it must be said, and it’s tempting to imagine how Turner’s story might fare in a different on-stage presentation – a one woman show, perhaps? But its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. It strains under the weight of some of its subject matter, particularly in the first act, but more than brings it home in the second. Come, then, for the music – but if you’re after Tina’s story, it’s better told in her own voice.

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, 'tina — the tina turner musical' is touring its simply-the-best stage tribute around australia.

When the onstage ode's Australian-premiere season at Theatre Royal Sydney wraps up, it's taking its show — 'Nutbush City Limits' included — on the road.

'Tina — The Tina Turner Musical' Is Touring Its Simply-the-Best Stage Tribute Around Australia

They call it Tina — The Tina Turner Musical , oh Tina — The Tina Turner Musical — and, while it finally arrived in Australia in May , it now has more dates around the nation. After premiering in London back in 2018, this stage ode to the music icon that's had Aussies dancing to 'Nutbush City Limits' for decades will tour Down Under, following up its current first local stint in Sydney with seasons in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne.

No, it isn't taking to the stage in a church house, gin house, school house or outhouse — or on highway number 19, either. But Tina — The Tina Turner Musical will obviously have Crown Theatre, Festival Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Princess Theatre enjoying Turner's greatest hits in one massive show. The list of musical numbers includes 'Nutbush City Limits', naturally, as well as everything from 'River Deep, Mountain High' and 'Proud Mary' through to 'Private Dancer' and 'What's Love Got to Do with It?'.

Tina — The Tina Turner Musical has made its trip Down Under courtesy of TEG DAINTY, Stage Entertainment and Tali Pelman, in association with Tina Turner herself before her passing in May this year. Announcing the show's stint on our shores back in 2022, the singer said that "Australia has always shared abundant love with me, going back to my early concerts in the late 70s through the uplifting partnership with the National Rugby League. It is very special for me that we will be reunited."

"The joy, passion and message of resilience in my musical is so important now as ever. Thank you from the bottom my heart for welcoming me with open arms once again," Turner continued.

The singer didn't mention her appearance in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome , but she is indeed part of the beloved Mad Max franchise , too.

In Australia, The Lion King , We Will Rock You , Beautiful: The Carole King Musical , Ragtime and Moulin Rouge! The Musical star Ruva Ngwenya plays Tina, with In the Heights , Fame: The Musical and fellow Moulin Rouge! The Musical alumni Tim Omaji as Ike Turner.

Penned by Tony Award-nominee and Pulitzer Prize-winner Katori Hall, plus Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, and directed by fellow Tony-nominee Phyllida Lloyd, Tina — The Tina Turner Musical  clearly has quite the story to tell. The show steps through Turner's life and fame, including growing up in Nutbush, Tennessee, the hard work that led to her career, all of those aforementioned hits, her 12 Grammy Awards, her volatile time with Ike and her huge solo success. If you're a fan, Turner herself summed it up — yes, it's simply the best.

At that point there was no script and no book; however, I was hooked on the idea of it," said TEG DAINTY CEO Paul Dainty about Tina — The Tina Turner Musical.

"We have been on that journey ever since, and here we are today announcing the Australian tour! Australians love this theatrical masterpiece which tells the story of Tina's life, of empowerment and success, and is ultimately the best music industry comeback story of all time."

‘Tina’, the Tina Turner Musical, to Travel to Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne in 2024

By Jules LeFevre

Following a hugely successful run in Sydney, producers for Tina – The Tina Turner Musical have announced the production will tour Australia in 2024. The musical, which has been running at Sydney’s Theatre Royal since May, will head to Perth in February, Adelaide in April, Brisbane in July, and finally Melbourne in late September.

The Sydney leg of the musical has also been extended, and will now run until the very end of 2023. See all the dates and ticketing details below.

Tina Turner: ‘The Best’

The original production – which was produced in collaboration with Tina Turner herself – premiered in London in 2018, going on to earn 12 Tony nominations and opening in numerous countries all around the world. The musical charts the incredible success and trials of the late, great, singer, with 23 songs from her back catalogue featuring throughout. Actress Ruva Ngwenya has been playing the title role for the duration of its run in Australia, and will continue through next year.

Turner died in May of this year (only a few days after the opening night of the musical in Sydney) at the age of 83 after a long battle with illness. “With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” the official statement from her team read. “Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music.”

Turner remains one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, and the singer had a close relationship with Australia – becoming an iconic part of NRL in the ’90s thanks to a wildly successful advertising campaign. In a statement released last year when the Sydney run of the musical was announced, Turner said the country has “always shared abundant love with me”.

“Going back to my early concerts in the late 70s through the uplifting partnership with the National Rugby League. It is very special for me that we will be reunited,” Turner said. “The joy, passion and message of resilience in my musical is so important now as ever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me with open arms once again.”

Paul Dainty AO, President, and CEO of TEG DAINTY said, “I first heard about the possibility of a stage musical portraying Tina’s life eight years ago and I immediately reached out to Tali Pelman at Stage Entertainment .  At that point there was no script and no book however I was hooked on the idea of it. Australians are loving this theatrical masterpiece which tells the story of Tina’s life, of empowerment and success, and is ultimately the best music industry comeback story of all time.”

Producer, Tali Pelman  said, “I know Australia was very close to Tina's heart, so we are especially excited our show is touring. Our musical is about how Tina became not only the music icon we adored, but the woman who continues to motivate and inspire us today. Everything about Tina was unique - her heart, her story and of course her voice - and we can’t wait for all of Australia to experience her journey and her triumph through our show.”    QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said, “Queensland audiences have already respondedenthusiastically to TINA – THE Tina Turner MUSICAL with tickets selling fast since we first announced the season. Tina had a special affinity for Australia and of course our Brisbane Broncos, so what’s not to love? Tina was much loved throughout her career and her legacy lives on through her music, but a lot of people don’t know the story of her life beyond the stage. This musical is an unforgettable immortalisation of a formidable woman and artist.”

This new musical based on the life of legendary artist Tina Turner received its world premiere in April 2018 in London’s West End, where it opened to five-star reviews and continues to break box office records at the Aldwych Theatre.  In March 2019, the German production opened at Stage Operettenhaus in Hamburg, the Broadway production followed in November 2019 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Dutch production opened at the Beatrix Theater, Utrecht, in February 2020.  A third European production opened in Autumn 2021 at the Teatro Coliseum in Madrid, Spain and the North American Tour commenced in September 2022.  In 2023 alongside the Australian production, the European Production in Stuttgart, Germany opened.

One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows were seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history.  When she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October 2021, Tina Turner became one of only three women in the institution’s history to be inducted twice (she was initially inducted in 1991, alongside Ike Turner).

‘Tina’, the Tina Turner Musical, to Travel to Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne in 2024

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
