Ranthambore National Park: A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Ria Gupta

Ranthambore National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Since its inception in 1980, Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan has gained popularity not only for its bloated tiger population, but for the freedom with which predators roam in its vicinity. Tigers walk with humans here. They bask in the sun impervious to camera shutters and roam by the water bodies unhindered by roaring jeeps. Their strength lies not only in their numbers but in their ability to coexist with humans, shares Ranthambore National Park’s first female guide Suraj Bai Meena .

But spotting the tiger doesn’t just depend on how dense the population is. There are various factors that make your safari experience smooth, from the timing of your visit to the safari slot you pick to the proximity of your hotel to the gate. Suraj Bai Meena , who has been working at the park for 18 years now and is a source of inspiration for many women in the town, shares all the insider information for planning your safari right the next time you’re in Ranthambore.

What makes Ranthambore National Park special?

Suraj remembers a time when it wasn’t easy to spot a tiger running wild in the park. But over the years, as the numbers have multiplied at a steady pace with conservation efforts, she’s found sightings to become longer, more frequent and exciting. Ranthambore’s tigers are so comfortable with photography now that they roam freely among humans. She’s witnessed territorial fights between tigers up close.

The sightings are great because the animals at Ranthambore enjoy strong protection. There are security cameras across the woods and there’s also a checkpost every 10km where forest guards keep an eye out for dangers even in the areas cordoned off from our guides. Thanks to the tight security and animals roaming in confidence, Ranthambore is a photographer’s paradise. “Imagine watching a tiger fight its own children to grab the female's attention. As its roars reverberate through the woods, it’s hard not to shake in fear. Now, imagine hearing it from a spitting distance .”

What to spot at Ranthambore National Park?

For their ever-increasing numbers and unique nonchalance, tigers have become a revered favourite in this park. Suraj counts over 76 tigers here—about 26 females, 26 cubs and 24-25 male tigers. Also, keep your eyes peeled for leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, jackals, foxes and antelopes.

Around 150 bird species reside in the park; photographers especially come to spot migratory birds such as the paradise flycatcher in the summer. Suraj’s most unique sighting has been the honey badger—a rare sighting that is appreciated only by wildlife enthusiasts and academia in her experience. For the best chances of spotting a tiger, she suggests consulting with your guide about the best zones. These insider experts have a finger on the pulse of everything, from where female tigresses have laid cubs to where there’s a turf war going on between two males.

Ranthambore National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

What's the best time to go to Ranthambore National Park?

If you visit between October to February, you will get a great view with a lot of greenery. But you may not spot the tiger. There's ample vegetation around to hide in, and food and water are everywhere. So tigers will stay within a small area where all their needs are fulfilled. Therefore, March to May is the preferred time for sightings. Ranthambore is covered with dry deciduous forests where water dries up fast. Suraj reveals that many NGOs—in collaboration with the government–have created man-made solar-powered waterfalls here. All animals inevitably circle back to these water bodies to drink water. June onwards the tigers begin to go back into hiding for the monsoon . From July to September, the core zones from one to five fill up with water and hence remain shut.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

Set out on at least four safaris in a span of three days. Rest and roam on the day of your arrival. Keep some buffer time right before your departure as the park is over three hours from the airport.

What are the safari slots at Ranthambore?

The regular safari is three-hour long and happens twice a day—morning and evening. Suraj is not partial to any slot when it comes to sightings. In the morning, though, there’s ample movement—the tigers are up and ambulating, while in the afternoon they may be snoozing in the shade. Though timings for the safari slots vary as per season, the last safari always wraps up before sunset . The timings as per season are:

How to book a safari permit at Ranthambore and how much does it cost?

For jeep safaris, you can book your permit online on the  Rajasthan SSO website . Suraj warns that bookings for April are sold out by December. So this might not be the most ideal place for that spontaneous Rajasthan road trip. On-the-spot bookings are only available for canters and not jeeps. The canter is a 20-seater vehicle priced at Rs850* per person. The jeep can be booked at Rs1,250* per person.

How to book a jeep and guide at Ranthambore?

There are about 250 guides at Ranthambore National Park. A roster is maintained by the forest department and you’re assigned your jeep and guide according to it. The contact numbers as well as vehicle numbers are mentioned in the ticket you get after booking your permit. Alternatively, you can ask to choose your guide at the time of presenting your ticket at an additional fee of Rs1,300*.

Which zones are the best at Ranthambore National Park?

Zones one to five are considered to be the best. They’re the oldest, therefore the best maintained with ample variety of vegetation. Zones six to 10 are more easily accessible to locals. Hence, they have a lot of movement from locals as well as other free-roaming animals.

What are the best hotels in Ranthambore?

The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort (doubles from Rs73,500* including all meals, book here ) is only a 10-minute drive from the main entry gate for zones one to five. You can indulge in open-air yoga and wellness therapies after a day in the wild here. Also close to the gate is Aman-i-Khas (doubles from Rs1,11,000* including all meals, book here ), where each of the 10 tents comes with sundecks. There’s a spa and a library as well. Sawai Vilas (doubles from Rs16,000*, book here ) is a boutique hotel that stands adjacent to the park, and has its own wildlife visits, from over 200 species of birds, jungle cats, antelope, and wild boar.

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Ranthambore?

When in Ranthambore, try the Chambal safari. River Chambal flows around Ranthambore, and tourists can explore its beauty by boat. Spot alligators and birds like the northern pintail, egrets, herons, storks, and flamingos. You can also take a walk down to Ranthambore Fort, which stands in the middle of the forest. The view is great from there, and who knows, you can even spot a tiger on your way to the monument. Tickets for the boat safari can be booked on the spot.

Ranthambore is well connected by road, air and railway. From Delhi , you can cover the 462km in eight hours by road. Otherwise, trains are a great option. Ranthambore’s railway station is 8km from the main entry gate. If you're flying in, catch a flight to Jaipur International Airport. From there, you can cover the 181km to Ranthambore in three hours by train or by car.

Majestic tiger yawning our best sighting on our safari in Ranthambore National Park

The Ultimate Ranthambore National Park Safari Travel Guide

Last Updated on December 28, 2022 by Natalia

Taking a safari to see the majestic tigers of Ranthambore National Park is one of the highlights of any Rajasthan itinerary. Home to over 60 tigers, the park is one of the best places in the world to see these magnificent creatures. The chances of seeing a tiger in Ranthambore National Park are quite good, especially if you take multiple safaris, but there’s plenty of other wildlife in the park including sloth bears, monkeys, deer, crocodiles and leopards. We were lucky enough to go on safari in Ranthambore 4 times in 2019, experiencing both canter and jeep/gypsy safaris, so have plenty of tips and information about visiting. Find out everything you need to know and our top tips for seeing tigers with this Ranthambore National Park Safari travel guide!

It’s not possible to stay inside Ranthambore National Park as accommodation and hotels aren’t allowed in order to protect the animals’ habitat, but check out our list of the best hotels and resorts nearby!

How to get to Ranthambore National Park

First up on our Ranthambore travel guide is how to get there. Sawai Madhopur is the closest city to Ranthambore National Park, which makes it the ideal place to stay when visiting the park. Thankfully the city has good public transport links with several major cities, so it’s both easy and relatively cheap to get there.

The best way to get to Ranthambore National Park is to take the train to Sawai Madhopur, with direct trains to the city running from Jaipur , Agra, Jodhpur , Delhi, Udaipur and more.

If you plan to take the train then it’s worth booking your tickets as soon as possible, as trains can sell out weeks in advance in India. There were a couple of times where we didn’t book trains early enough and had to rearrange our whole itinerary as a result – so learn from our mistakes!

Fortunately it’s easy to book train tickets to Sawai Madhopur online in advance through 12GoAsia, which is extremely useful as it’s not possible for non-Indian residents to buy tickets through the official Indian Railways website.

Click here to check schedules and book train tickets to Sawai Madhopur through 12GoAsia!

Ranthambore Safari travel guide a Monkey sitting down

Although it’s potentially possible to get to Sawai Madhopur by bus, we would recommend travelling by train instead. Trains are only slightly more expensive and tend to be a lot more comfortable than the buses.

If you don’t have the time to spend a few days in Sawai Madhopur then an alternative is to take a day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park. It’s a long day taking a Ranthambore safari from Jaipur though, so we recommend staying for longer if you can make it work.

Best time to visit Ranthambore National Park

There is no definitive best time to visit Ranthambore National Park for your safari. Whatever time of year you visit there are no guarantees of what wildlife you will see, so a lot of it ends up being down to luck.

Two of the best months for seeing tigers in Ranthambore are May and June. During these months the average temperature is around 34-35 degrees Celsius with highs of around 40-41 degrees Celsius.

As a result of the heat, the tigers are seen more often as they need to come out from shelter to drink from the lakes and other water sources. This does give you a better chance of seeing the tigers, but also means you will have to put up with the intense heat yourself.

Zone 3 is particularly good to visit during the hotter months as it’s home to 3 lakes, including Padam Lake – the largest lake in Ranthambore National Park. With some luck it’s possible to see tigers and other animals drinking from the lake due to the heat.

Some of the beautiful scenery you can see on your Safari in Ranthambore travel guide - Padam Lake

It’s worth considering whether you really want to put up with such high temperatures before visiting in May or June. When Natalia first visited India back in 2014 she was in the country during May and June and said the heat was unbearable.

If you would prefer to visit when it’s a bit less hot then any time from November to April is good for visiting Ranthambore for a safari – just make sure to bring some slightly warmer clothes to avoid wind chill if you visit during the winter months.

Visiting during October isn’t normally recommended as it’s just after the monsoon season and so tiger sightings are less common as there is more water in the park. That being said, we visited in October and we saw tigers on 3 out of 4 safaris.

Realistically tiger sightings can happen at any time of year, you just need a bit of luck. If you spend long enough in the area and take multiple safaris then hopefully you should see a tiger no matter what time of year you visit!

Monsoon Season in Ranthambore

Traditionally Ranthambore National Park closes and stops safaris for the months of July, August and September due to the monsoon season and to avoid disturbing the tigers during their mating season. In recent years however, the park has only closed zones 1-5 during these months and have kept zones 6-10 open to tourists.

It’s best to search for up to date information regarding the opening and closure of zones within the park during these months, as there is no confirmation that zones 6-10 will remain open during the monsoon season every year.

It’s also worth noting that some zones, in particular 7 and 8, may be closed if the rain causes the roads in the zones to be unsuitable for driving.

Jeep vs Canter for Ranthambore National Park Safari

There are two different types of safaris you can take in Ranthambore National Park – a jeep safari or a canter safari. Jeep safaris are sometimes referred to as gypsy safaris, but it’s just a different name for exactly the same thing.

The difference between the two is the size of the vehicle and therefore the number of people on board. Jeeps seat a maximum of 6 people and are much smaller, whereas canters can seat up to 20 people and are significantly larger vehicles.

As part of our Ranthambore travel guide we would chose jeeps over canters.

This is because jeeps more comfortable with fewer people and are more mobile, meaning they can get to certain areas in Ranthambore the canters can’t.

On our first visit to Ranthambore we took a canter safari, but we didn’t enjoy the experience as much as we hoped – even though we saw a tiger within a few minutes of entering the national park!

A canter safari in Ranthambore

For our remaining 3 safaris we went in a jeep and found it to be a much better experience. The jeep safaris felt more personal as it’s easier for the guide and driver to point out wildlife to you.

In a canter the guide has to try and point out animals to 20 people at once, which can make it hard to see where you should be looking.

Jeep safaris in Ranthambore National Park do cost more than canter safaris, but the price difference isn’t too big. Considering it only costs slightly more to take a jeep safari we definitely think it’s worth spending a little bit extra for a better experience. If you’ve come all this way to go on a safari, why settle for second best?

A jeep which holds 6 people on safari in Ranthambore National Park which we recommend instead of a canter as part of this travel guide

The cost of a safari in Ranthambore National Park varies depending on how you decide to book. It is possible to book directly through the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan’s website, but the process is quite confusing and complicated.

If you book your visit to Ranthambore National Park through the government’s website then a canter safari costs approximately 1,428 rupees per person and a jeep safari costs approximately 1,698 rupees per person.

Alternatively, if you go through a 3rd party such as a tour operator or hotel then costs will vary but we paid 2,000 rupees each for a canter safari and 3,000 rupees each for a jeep safari.

A bird with the beautiful scenery in Ranthambore National Park

Which zone is best for a Ranthambore National Park Safari?

Ranthambore National Park has a total of 10 zones, but it’s only possible to visit one zone per safari. There is much discussion over which zones are the best for seeing the famous Ranthambore tigers, with zones 1-5 generally seen as the best zones.

Although these zones are considered to be better, it’s still not possible to guarantee tiger sightings. It also doesn’t mean that you won’t see a tiger if you visit any of the zones 6-10.

The best zones to visit in Ranthambore National Park for a safari actually vary from day to day depending on sightings. If a tiger or tigers have been seen in any zone over the past few days then you generally have a better chance of seeing the a tiger in a zone with a recent sighting.

We do not recommend a particular zone over another in this Ranthambore travel guide as it really does depend where recent sightings of a tiger are for near to when you are visiting.

Our first tiger spotting on our safari in Ranthambore, walking through the forest with a prey in it's mouth

Depending on how far in advance you book your safari it isn’t always possible to specify what zone you’d like to visit in Ranthambore National Park. There are limits on the number of jeeps and canters in each zone, and so booking further in advance gives you the best chance of choosing your desired zone.

Safaris in Ranthambore are split into two time slots – morning safaris and afternoon safaris. Every day at 10am additional jeep and canter safaris go on sale for all zones for that afternoon and the following morning.

By booking a safari this way you’re able to take into account recent sightings and hopefully visit a zone that gives you the best chance of seeing a tiger. To do this we strongly recommend using a reliable local operator who knows the booking system.

We were lucky enough to find an extremely good operator who was able to get us safaris this way. He was able to get us one safari in zone 3, one in zone 4 and two in zone 6.

The operator kept up to date on recent sightings and prioritised getting us safaris in zones where tigers had been seen that morning, or in the last few days. As a result we saw tigers on 3 out of 4 safaris – which was extremely lucky as sightings are normally less common during October.

A common sight is deer on a safari in Ranthambore

In reality there is no ‘best zone’ in Ranthambore National Park, as it just depends on recent sightings and a bit of luck. We recommend using a quality local operator to book your safari when the additional slots become available.

As part of our Ranthambore travel guide we recommend staying in Sawai Madhopur and do a number of safaris during your stay. This gives you the best possible chance of seeing a tiger, and also means the operator has more chances to get you a safari in a zone with recent sightings.

If you want to book through the same operator as us then visit the Cultural Safari Tours website and contact them via email or whatsapp to arrange your Ranthambore safaris. They’re experts at what they do and helped us achieve our dream of seeing tigers in the wild!

Ranthambore Safari Times

Safaris in Ranthambore National Park are split into two time slots – morning safaris and afternoon safaris. The exact timings of the safaris depend on the time of year due to the variation in daylight hours.

A safari in Ranthambore National Park lasts for approximately 3-3½ hours in general. Morning safaris run from 6am to 10.30am depending on the time of year. Afternoon safaris run from either 2pm to 7pm depending on the time of year.

Click here for a breakdown of safari timings by exact dates!

It’s worth noting that when we did our canter safari we spent considerably less time inside Ranthambore National Park in comparison to our jeep safaris. We were in the park for less than 2 hours on our canter safari, whereas we spent around 3½ hours in the park for every jeep safari we did.

The longer you spend in the park, the better chance you have of seeing a tiger regardless of whether you visit in the morning or afternoon. In our opinion it’s definitely worth paying extra for a jeep safari to increase your chances of spotting tigers!

How to book a safari in Ranthambore National Park online

Booking a safari in Ranthambore National Park is relatively straightforward if you decide to book through a local tour operator or a third party such as Get Your Guide. As we’ve said above we recommend booking through Cultural Safari Tours as they are experienced in booking Ranthambore safaris and in our experience provide an excellent service.

The price will vary depending on who you book through but we paid 2,000 rupees per person for a canter safari and 3,000 rupees per person for a jeep safari. This price included all entrance fees, guide fees and vehicle fees, as well as return transport from our hotel in Sawai Madhopur to Ranthambore National Park.

Although going through an operator like Get Your Guide is a good idea in many ways, you won’t have any say on what zone your safari is in. If you book through a local operator you have a bit more say about which zones you want to visit – although there is no guarantee you will actually get the zones you want anyway!

The final option is to book the safari yourself through the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan’s website. Doing it this way will work out cheaper, with the price for a Ranthambore safari in 2020 being approximately 1,428 rupees per person for a canter safari and 1,698 rupees per person for a jeep safari.

Unfortunately the website isn’t the easiest to navigate and we recommend paying the extra for the convenience of having it arranged for you.

Ranthambore Safari Tips

Take multiple safaris  – If you really want to see a tiger in Ranthambore National Park then we recommend doing multiple safaris as said before in this travel guide. Even though it’s one of the best places in the world to see tigers, sightings are by no means guaranteed. If you visit more than once you increase your chances of getting lucky!

After our first 3 safaris we weren’t sure whether to take a 4th, but we ended up having our closest encounter with a tiger on our 4th safari so it was well worth it. Even if you get lucky and see a tiger on your first safari, it can still be worth doing more safaris anyway!

Bring plenty of water  – Safaris in Ranthambore National Park last around 3½ hours from start to finish, so make sure you bring enough water with you – particularly if you’re visiting during the hotter months, such as May and June.

Get some binoculars  – If you want to get a good view of the tigers or animals then it’s worth bringing a pair of binoculars. In an ideal world you’ll have a great sighting of a tiger relatively close up, but in many cases the animals are often in the distance.

Out of the 3 tiger sightings we had, only one was close enough to see well with the naked eye. By bringing a pair of binoculars you should still get a relatively good view anyway, so it’s worth the investment. We recommend checking out Amazon to pick up a pair of binoculars if you don’t already have some!

Kingfisher in Ranthambore National Park

Buy a zoom lens – As we’ve said above, tigers and animals aren’t always close up when you see them on safari. If you want to get the best possible pictures then it’s worth buying a lens with a good zoom, as well as a good quality camera if you haven’t already got one.

We got a 70-300mm lens before we visited Ranthambore, and it helped us get some lovely pictures that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. There are plenty of great cameras and zoom lenses available on amazon –  click here to take a look for yourself!

Wear suitable clothes  – Check the forecast and wear appropriate clothes for the weather. During the warmer months you’ll want to wear light clothing for your safari, but during the winter months you may actually need some layers to keep you warm earlier or later in the day. It’s also a good idea to wear a hat for extra protection from the sun.

Use sun cream  – Make sure to put on sun cream to keep yourself protected, especially during the warmer months!

Mosquito repellent  – It’s also a good idea to use mosquito repellent to protect yourself against mosquito borne diseases especially for the evening safaris.

Safari Timing

Tiger reserve timing.

The Ranthambore Tiger Reserve offers two safari timings for visitors to choose from: morning and evening. The timings vary depending on the season, as the reserve follows different schedules during summer and winter months.

During the summer season, which typically runs from April to June, the morning safari timing starts at around 6:00 am and lasts until 9:30 am, while the evening safari timing starts at around 3:30 pm and lasts until 7:00 pm. This schedule is adjusted to avoid the heat of the day, which can make it challenging to spot wildlife.

During the winter season, which typically runs from October to March, the safari timings change to accommodate the shorter days. The morning safari timing starts at around 7:00 am and lasts until 10:30 am, while the evening safari timing starts at around 2:30 pm and lasts until 6:00 pm.

It’s important to note that these timings are subject to change and may vary depending on the conditions and requirements of the reserve. Visitors are advised to check with the park authorities or their safari operator for the exact timings.

Choosing the right safari timing can significantly impact the chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife. The morning safari is generally considered to be the best time to see tigers, as they are usually more active and visible during this time. However, the evening safari also offers an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife, especially when the animals come out to drink water from the lakes and ponds.

In conclusion, understanding the safari timings at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve can help visitors plan their trip better and maximize their chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife. By choosing the right timing and working with a reputable safari operator, visitors can create a memorable and fulfilling experience at this iconic wildlife reserve in India.

Ranthambore National Park’s name comes from Ranthambore Fort which is situated on a hill in the park. This fort is approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ranthambore has a very famous Trinetra Ganesha Temple which is situated on the campus of the park. The Trinetra Ganesha Temple is very famous among Hindus.

The Indian subcontinent was covered in beautiful forests at the time before India gained its independence from British rule. However as industrialization and population growth grew, these forests were heavily exploited and eventually destroyed. Under the control of their hunting department, these woodlands were once used as hunting grounds for the Jaipur kingdom’s nobility. Despite this, as hunting was a rare activity, there wasn’t a noticeable, noticeable decline in the amount of wildlife. However, the onset of industrialization had a profound effect on the forest and its fauna, which resulted in a sharp decrease in the number of tigers that used to wander these woods.

After seeing the urgent intervention, the Rajasthan Government introduced the Rajasthan Forest Act in 1953 to safeguard the remaining forests. In 1955, the forest which was surrounding Ranthambore was declared the Sawai Madhopur Sanctuary. The government also launched Project Tiger in 1973 to protect and preserve the endangered tigers that were living in the forest. Later these sanctuaries were designated as Tiger Reserves.

With time, neighboring forests were added to the sanctuary and tiger reserve. The forests that bordered the sanctuary in the north were renamed the Kaila Devi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sawai Mansingh Wildlife Sanctuary in the following years. Presently, the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve includes both of these sanctuaries as essential components.

The government is making conservation efforts to save the tigers!

The major efforts for conservation in Ranthambore National Park started in 18973, when the government introduced Project Tiger intending to protect the tigers of the country, because of the increasing number of hunting or poaching. Project Tiger was started by the government of India after a census in 1972 which showed the decreasing number of tigers in the country.

Hence, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve became one of the prominent wildlife sanctuaries which worked on conserving tigers. This reserve was then divided into two areas, “core areas” and “buffer zones”. “Core Areas” were the areas where tigers could roam freely without any interruption and so to protect their natural habitats, deforestation, and other commercial activities were banned in these areas. “Buffer Areas” are those areas where the land can be used by the locals for farming or other purposes, and conservation by the government.

A formal entity has been required for the project’s effective operation ever since it was implemented. After a task force was established, project Tiger received the legislative authority that included both administrative and legal authorities. The National Tiger Conservation Authority, or NTCA, is the name of this organization. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, as revised in 2006, grants it specific authority. The Authority monitors how well the tiger reserves’ conservation and tourism-related policies are being implemented and followed. It also guarantees backing for the conservation plan’s efficient execution. The number of Bengal tigers in Ranthambore National Park increased from 66 in 2019 to 81 in 2021, according to a recent census.

As mentioned by SP Yadav, the member secretary of NTCA, the population of tigers in the country has increased at an average rate of 6% annually. He thinks that by employing locals in eco-tourism and conservation-related fields and educating them about the significance of tigers for ecological balance, we might inspire more enthusiasm for tiger conservation.

Bear vs tiger: Watch 2 of nature's heavyweights face off in the wild in India

Visitors at a tiger reserve in India recently filmed an encounter between a tigress and a bear, with the bear charging after the tigress but deciding at the last minute it was not worth the fight.

A bear charges at a tigress on a dirt road at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in India.

Visitors at a nature reserve in India recently witnessed an incredibly rare sight, when a bear and a tigress confronted each other in a standoff that very nearly broke into a fight.

The scene unfolded in April at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, a protected area in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state. Visitors on a safari filmed the encounter and posted a video to the social platform X April 30. The video shows a tigress ( Panthera tigris ) sauntering down a dirt road and then stopping in her tracks when a bear , which appears to be a sloth bear ( Melursus ursinus ), emerges from the trees ahead.

A rarest of rare sight of a bear charging towards a tigress, captured today at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve- A CATS( Conservation Assured Tiger Standards) habitat developed assiduously by UP Forest Department. Pl don’t miss the calm and composure of Big Cat even in face of attack &… pic.twitter.com/jU48UWpTqJ April 30, 2024

The bear wanders across the road and disappears behind long grass as the tigress watches. Moments later, as the tigress strolls on, the bear reappears and chases after her.

"A rarest of rare sight of a bear charging toward a tigress, captured today at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve," Rajiv Kumar Gupta , a retired government official with the Indian Administration Service who witnessed the encounter, wrote in the post.

In the video, the tigress whips around when she hears the bear charging after her, but she does not attack and instead stands her ground. After a few seconds of the two predators facing off, the bear retreats back into the trees.

"Apex predators usually have a mutual respect for each other especially if they are of a similar size," Tara Pirie , a lecturer in ecology and conservation at the University of Surrey in the U.K. who was not on the safari at the time of the encounter, told Live Science in an email. "The tiger took time to watch the bear, sizing it up possibly to understand more about it. The bear did not show a particularly aggressive charge from the video so the tiger must have decided it was big enough to stand its ground."

Predators of similar strength and size tend to avoid unnecessary fights, as fighting wastes energy and puts both parties at risk of injury, Pirie said.

In this case, the tigress may have been particularly reluctant to engage in a struggle because she was nursing three young cubs at the time of the encounter and could not "afford any injury," said Jitender Govindani , a professor and member of the academic council at ICBM School of Business Excellence in Hyderabad, India, who witnessed the standoff. Govindani noted the tigress appeared to surrender when the bear charged.

"The tigress lowered her guard and surrendered when the bear got into attack mode," Govindani told Live Science in an email. "Once the tigress surrendered the bear left immediately, as [it] was also not keen to fight and showed aggression just [to] show its readiness to take on the tigress head on if provoked to a fight."

Earlier in April, another tigress and her cubs ambushed and killed a crocodile in Ranthambore National Park, in India's northwestern state of Rajasthan. A video taken by visitors showed the four tigers feasting on the crocodile's carcass .

Learn more about this revamped campground's safari tents, cabins, and more

timings of ranthambore safari

The camping season at the former Port Huron Township campground is already underway, but its new owners said the property has plenty of new features — such as safari tents and deluxe cabins — and future amenities in the works for visitors.

Ahead of an open house set for noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort proprietors Steve and Karen Ureel toured the evolving site, 2301 Water St., last week with Charlynn Grace, a regional vice president for Parkbridge Investment Group.

Although they were past the second year owning the site — Parkbridge purchased the site from the township in 2022 — Steve Ureel, the group’s principal, said they didn’t plan to host an official grand opening until next year when large amenities like a clubhouse, a yoga and wellness room, and pool are completed.

For now, they said they were hoping to help get people acquainted with the changes with an aim to cater to groups and families and provide an alternative to campers who didn’t want to pitch a tent or haul an RV.

“We have some glamping units from last year that we opened up, and that was two airstreams, a bus, and a ‘little gem’ camper,” Grace said Thursday — seated with the Ureels on the porch of one safari tent. Nearby, plenty of RVs and trailers were parked with active campers with the traditional season having kicked off April 15.

Grace admitted the tents were her favorite — each with a theme, their own fire pit and grill, and situated in a semi-circle around a community fire pit.

“For this year, obviously, the new glamping units that we have are the tents — or safari tents, I should say — the deluxe cabins, and the cottages. Those are our new amenities or the glamping-type style units,” she said. “So, we’re offering the 25% (off) only on the new glamping units. These three options. Later in the season, we’ll have A-frames. Those will be 25% when we open them, as well.”

What are the details on available campsites this season?

There are five safari tents and deluxe cabins inside the campground. They similarly feature separate bedrooms or spaces with bunks for kids, though they target different campers.

Steve said the cabins were aimed to be vamped up from traditional KOA cabins for smaller groups — with a splash of color among indoor decorative features, as designed by Karen — while the tents could house larger groups and gatherings.

And unlike normal tents, the safari units are equipped with air conditioning control units. Karen Ureel noted the view of the tents alongside the woods, calling it beautiful and “Instagram-worthy.”

Those are expected to be available for reservations June 14. The airstreams installed last year are already available.

Four colorful cottages have also been erected near the entrance of Dancing Fire.

Slated to be a gated area, Steve Ureel said they were playing with the idea of making the cottages available for purchase, so private owners could own the facility and rent a seasonal site. There’s also four more spots that could include future cottages, depending on demand.

“So, in general, all of our cabins. We have different price points. The cottages are certainly high-end. That’s a higher price point,” Steve Ureel said. “The next price point is the tents. So, these are ideal— primarily, these are set up for a community gathering. So, family reunions, girls’ weekends off, we’re going to have a high emphasis on overnight groups. You can rent one tent, or you can bring your whole group and rent them all. … But two large tents for families. The three smaller ones are geared for a couple with maybe two kids.”

What about amenities down the road?

Additionally, as referenced by Grace, several A-frame park model-style, heavily-windowed pods are on site and designed to be stilted on a slope farther into the woods with a view at the back of the property. Steve said those should be available in August.

While bigger amenities like the clubhouse won’t be ready for campers until next season, smaller amenities, he said, are in place already. Those include a dog run and pickleball court, which awaits fencing. There’s also an existing playground for kids on site.

There was a big emphasis last winter on upgrading 152 regular campsites with full-service water, sewer, and electric access. Steve called it their “heavy lift,” getting new infrastructure in the ground.

Sometime later in the 2025 season, Grace said they hoped to get a bike rental and kayak launch set up.

And next to the A-frame pods, Steve said they have space where they’d like to design treehouses down the road.

What Should You Wear to Our Wedding? Here’s a Mood Board.

Dress codes, color palettes and shopping guides: Wardrobe guidance for some weddings is getting increasingly specific.

The couple surrounded by guests sitting, standing, squatting on and by jeeps, dressed in a color palette of tans, browns, whites and khakis, assemble on rugged terrain with hills in background for a safari wedding in India. The groom, left center, with a beard and sunglasses, wearing a taupe suit and a tan hat, sits on the hood of one jeep with a young child in his lap, wearing a white shirt and taupe khaki pants. The bride, standing next to them, with long brown hair, and wearing a headpiece down the center of her forehead, leans on the jeep, wearing a long white dress trimmed with puffs of white feathers.

By Praachi Raniwala

Praachi Raniwala is a fashion and lifestyle journalist based in Mumbai. As a wedding guest, she has been asked to dress in “unicorn hues” and “mysterious masks.”

When Lauren and Jackson England tied the knot with a safari wedding in Ranthambore, India, in January, they wanted the dress code to reflect the surroundings. The mood they communicated to their guests was “classic heritage Ralph Lauren.”

“I am an aesthetic person, and we had a clear vision for the hero image we wanted to create on the safari Jeep,” Mr. England, 37, said, referring to their primary wedding portrait. (He and Ms. England are founders of a content and production company in Sydney, Australia.) “It was important to me that guests followed our color palette.”

In the end, “our creative friends had fun with it, but our mothers were a bit overwhelmed.”

Ms. England, 40, said that they didn’t want anyone to feel pressure, so they “informed everyone three months in advance, and had discussions with them on what could work,” adding that they also chose the dress code of “colors of India” for a pre-wedding event in Jaipur that doubled as her 40th birthday party. They used campaign imagery from the designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee to illustrate this theme.

The Englands aren’t the only ones directing the aesthetic of their wedding. Earlier this year, nine pages of wardrobe guidance were given to guests for a multiday pre-wedding celebration in Jamnagar, India, for Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani , the youngest son of one of the world’s richest men. “Jungle fever,” “dazzling Desi romance” and “heritage Indian" were among the themes, and the document, which included runway photos and designer campaign images for inspiration , listed the expected weather conditions for the event.

Dress codes for their more recent pre-wedding celebration, a multiday cruise in Europe from May 29 to June 1, included “classic cruise,” “tourist chic" and “Italian summer.”

“Weddings today are designed within an inch of their life,” said Sarah Haywood, a wedding planner in London. “These mood boards help communicate the destination, venue and event design so that guests can be dressed appropriately.”

Anny Choi, a stylist in New York, has seen a rise in requests to create mood boards for wedding guests. While the couples “want guests to wear what they are comfortable in, they also want everyone to look cohesive,” she said.

Some weddings are drawing inspiration from highly glamorous and sometimes themed events like red carpets, fashion shows and the Met Gala, which has become known for its own unconventional dress codes like “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and this year’s “The Garden of Time.”

“Wedding events have become more extreme. It’s not just a welcome party but an all-white party. It’s not just a poolside brunch but a ‘tropical extravaganza’ or a ‘Slim Aarons-themed’ party,” Ms. Choi said. “If your vision is so specific, the more information and guidelines you can give your guests, the better.”

Swathi Narra, an entrepreneur and real estate developer from New Orleans, has been a guest at multiple weddings with dress codes, ranging in theme from “denim and diamonds” and “vintage Bollywood” to “Texas hoedown.” Ms. Narra, 43, said she finds dress codes to be one way to get excited about the wedding, but cautioned against couples making it obligatory or overly prescriptive. “I wouldn’t want them to dictate a very specific silhouette to wear,” she said.

Ayushi Dalmia, an art director in Toronto, decided to do away with any dress codes for her two-day wedding in Lonavala, India, in February 2023, which surprised her friends. Ms. Dalmia, 35, said she received many calls asking for a wardrobe planning document, because “it has become par for the course.”

Ms. Haywood, the wedding planner, added that the popularity of these mood boards varies in different parts of the world. “It’s more prevalent in Asia and South Asia in my experience, but we are starting to see more of it in the West.”

The guidance can be helpful when guests are unfamiliar with cultural elements, too. “Guests will need cues and recommendations when customs and clothing of a different community are involved,” Ms. Choi said. She pointed to a “surf shack sangeet” welcome party in the Maldives for clients of hers in Singapore with Indian-Australian-Chinese roots. The couple gave guests a mood board that declared the theme “Jaipur meets Maldives,” and said men should wear kurtas, which they would provide, while women should come in “Indian-inspired looks” or “chic caftans.” The couple added that they would provide accessories.

But problems arise when the couple is purely driven by online optics and visibility, Ms. Choi said. “For some brides and grooms, this has a lot to do with Instagram,” she added. “In such cases, everyone is simply trying to outdo each other.”

Ms. Narra agreed. “Couples shouldn’t treat guests as props for their big days or mere spectators as they put on a show,” she said. “These things aren’t supposed to be that serious, right?”

Air's Moon Safari is an era-defining French album worth celebrating, 25 years on

Air's Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin as illustrated on the cover of their 1998 deut album Moon Safari

There's no telling how many special moments have been soundtracked by Moon Safari, the acclaimed 1998 debut album from French duo Air.

An era-defining record of pristine, space-age lounge music delivered with cinematic atmosphere and a distinctively French je ne se quios , Moon Safari was a universal critical and commercial success upon release.

The lush easy-listening music was perfectly suited to post-club comedowns, hip cafes, and make-out sessions: smooth and dreamy enough to be played in the background, but singular and masterfully crafted enough to reward close listening.

It proved highly influential, too. But the wave of mellow, down tempo imitators and 'chill out' CD compilations it spawned struggled to surpass Air's chic, exquisitely woozy beauty.

'It was not meant to be played live'

Jean-Benoît Dunckel, one half of Air alongside Nicolas Godin, never expected Moon Safari's enduring success.

"We never imagined this album could work that way worldwide," he tells Karen Leng on Double J Lunch.

"It took time, it took decades, [but] the success is not by us, the audience made [it]."

This year, the duo has been playing Moon Safari in full around the world on their first tour in seven years, including Australia.

"It was not made to be played live," says Dunckel.

"We had to adapt it for the live [setting]. That is what the people want to get — this special feeling they heard the first time… to live again these feelings."

Having played two nights at the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid Live , Air will live-stream their show at London's Royal Albert Hall this weekend.

"It's a beautiful venue," says Dunckel, who is keen to preserve a pristine performance of the album online for future access.

"It's really important to do that because… people can also discover the band live. Some people appreciate the live versions more than the recorded versions."

Performing as a trio, alongside drummer Louis Delorme, Air play inside an oblong box adorned with dazzling lights and visuals, which morph from swathes of minimalist colour to the perspective of a spaceship enjoying interstellar travel.

"We play in a box of light. It looks a bit like the studio on the cover of 10 000 Hz Legend," says Dunckel, referencing the band's second studio album — a weirder, wilder reaction to Moon Safari.

Air perform on Sydney Opera House stage with visuals of a ship in hyperspace behind them.

"It could be a home, it could be our world, our head, our architectural concept. It helps for people to enter into a world… people like [that] intimacy."

Dunckel says people often ask: "Are you not bored to play these songs you play for 20 years now?"

"Sometimes I struggle — because you have to concentrate, and you have to play. But I'm never bored. It's always a pleasure."

Moon Safari is a product of its era, but it's also aged beautifully.

It's an evocative listening experience, from the moment lengthy opener 'La femme d'argent' ushers you in with the sounds of water and slinky bassline, through to the weightless pop and robot-voiced melodies of 'Kelly Watch The Stars' and 'New Star in the Sky'.

In 1998, its retro-futuristic arrangements already sounded timeless. 25 years later, its ability to transport your mind and imagination elsewhere hasn't dated one iota.

"It could be a journey, a love story," remarks Dunckel. "That's why we're really attached to it. I think the audience is searching for that, too.

"It helps human relationships in every way," adds Dunckel. Over the years, Air fans have shared "so many stories" of what the album means to them.

"Most of the time it's for love. It's always, 'I met my girlfriend or wife this time'."

Back in 1998, Dunckel told triple j that while hiking in Iceland, his guide revealed Moon Safari was his love-making soundtrack.

There's "probably" plenty of babies in the world with some of the album's DNA in them since, Dunckel estimates of a new generation discovering Air for the first time.

"As we are getting old now, it's becoming that people say, 'oh yeah, my parents were listening to Moon Safari when we were travelling in a car; this family time'."

Sexy Boy, the surprising queer anthem

For many, debut single 'Sexy Boy' was their first introduction to Air. A seductive slice of synth-pop that brought vocoder back to the pop charts and sung in both French and English.

It's a seemingly simple song but Dunckel notes there's "a lot of tolerance and freedom" embedded in it.

"Sexy Boy, first of all, is a strange title because it breaks a certain taboo. The taboo is that heterosexual boys can check out other boys," he explains.

"Also, it became a gay slogan in a way. A gay anthem."

The song took on a new meaning in late 90s Paris when the electronic music scene's wider acceptance of the LGTBQI+ community led to more club and techno nights dedicated to queer punters and DJs emerging.

"There was a lot of gay parties," says Dunckel. "Homosexuality is everywhere in the world, and it's always existed, always there. So, it was important to liberate this movement."

Originally, the song's titular phrase was inspired by Parisian fashion culture.

"People are checking each other out all the time… In Paris, when a couple is meeting another couple, the girl is not going to check out the boy. She's going to check out the other girl: analyse what she wears, how she behaves, what is the fashion or type of the boyfriend.

"Sexy Boy is speaking about that. The fact a man wants to be a pretty man and he is checking [out] other boys."

A popular soundtrack choice, featured in teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and noughties TV drama Queer As Folk, 'Sexy Boy' is also a testament to youth.

The French verses are "celebrating that golden age of being young," Dunckel explains.

"When you're young you don't realise you're at the top of your life. You have a lot of power, actually… because you're beautiful. Your skin, hair, you feel great, you have a lot of energy."

The makings of a classic

Despite its iconic status, Moon Safari was actually the last roll of the dice for Dunckel and Godin.

Raised in the conservative suburb of Versailles, the pair began making music together after meeting at school. But after having their demo tapes rejected by every record label they approached, they quit music and instead focused on their studies.

Each had established careers — Godin in architecture, Dunckel in mathematics — when an opportunity presented itself in a close friend landing a role with Virgin Records imprint Source.

They landed a deal with the label but ditching their jobs for a full-time career in music to support their burgeoning families was a gamble.

black and white portrait of French duo Air: Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel

"We were 26 years old. We were not sure we come be musicians for the rest of our life," remembers Dunckel. "I was already working [as] a physics teacher… I had a baby."

Thankfully, their risk was rewarded when their debut album became a breakout international hit. Air was swiftly lumped alongside a fresh wave of Parisian artists reinventing the electronic music scene in the late 90s.

Dubbed French touch, the movement included Cassius, St. Germain, Étienne de Crécy, and Daft Punk, who recorded their breakout 1997 album Homework down the street from where Air made Moon Safari.

"There was a kind of energy circulating all over Paris," recalls Dunckel. "Paris is kind of small; all the media, artists and business part of it [were] working all together."

The worlds of music, fashion, contemporary art, cinema — "everything was mixed," Dunckel says.

"At this time, new generations of young people coming from the suburbs are even inside Paris and mixing all these rich, futuristic concepts together with new machines, samplers, computer programs to make music."

A fond farewell to youth

Despite being poster boys for the future of French music, Moon Safari was an evocative, nostalgia-drenched ode to Dunckel and Godin's past.

"In a way it was the end of my youth… That's why the songs [on Moon Safari], there are a lot of regrets and it's a goodbye to our youth and the innocence of it.

"It's full of vibrations from teenage times."

Although labelled an electronic act, Air's music wasn't rooted in beats and house music. Instead, they armed themselves with analogue Moog and Korg synthesizers, vintage drum machines, vocoders and the trusty Rhodes piano.

The resulting compositions bore the esprit of Serge Gainsbourg, electronic pioneers like Jean-Michel Jarre, and the 1970s film and TV soundtracks of Dunckel's childhood.

There's a fondness for the psychedelic grandeur of Pink Floyd and ELO. But also, Burt Bacharach arrangements, particularly in the wistful French horn topline of ''Ce matin là' (This morning) and the easy-going 'You Make It Easy' and 'All I Need', both featuring the lyrics and vocals of Godin's then-neighbour, Beth Hirsch.

From its lush, otherworldly sounds right down to its title, Moon Safari gives rise to cosmic ideas and conducive to escapism. That spirit is central to Air's entire ethos.

"I think music exists in paradise and you can feel this [album] is in a strange interface between our world and something else."

Such ephemeral expressions might be surprising coming from a former physics teacher, but Dunckel says "both sides of your brain help" when it comes to making emotive art.

"There is a mathematic aspect of music, that analyses and helps you perform and conceive music. But there is something else happening, your heart is talking.

"As a musician you're organising the vibrations of your heart and the feelings into music… vibrations travelling into space and air."

"When I do a song, it's all about 'what do I feel?'" Dunckel concludes.

"For me, good means it affects me. No good means I don't feel anything… if it affects me, it's going to affect others, too. They're going to feel the feelings I do, too."
