THE FANTASTIC JOURNEY Cast And Crew - Where Are They Now?

“Time is changed here. Your present is their future. And it’s my past.”

That line of dialogue, delivered by twenty-third century healer Varian ( Jared Martin)  to an assembled group of time travelers, sums up the concept of  The Fantastic Journey . Sadly, it would be one the last lines spoken on the inventive sci-fi series, which was cancelled after that broadcast on June 16, 1977.

Like its lead characters,  The Fantastic Journey  traveled on a wild ride of its own, from big-budget pilot film in November of 1976, to highly promoted mid-season replacement in February, to quickly canceled series in June. Ultimately, it was  The Waltons  who killed our heroes, with an assist from  Welcome Back, Kotter ,  Barney Miller  and  What’s Happening . How could any show have survived against those primetime powerhouses, let alone one as delightfully odd and quirky as  The Fantastic Journey ?

Happily, time has transformed  The Fantastic Journey  from a forgotten failure into a cult classic. And you can travel back to 1977 to see how the  Journey  ended, when the final five episodes air  Sunday, March 18  in an overnight binge  starting at midnight ET on getTV!

Here’s a look at the cast and crew of  The Fantastic Journey  – and their past and future endeavors:

1. Roddy McDowall as Dr. Jonathan Willaway

Willaway is introduced as a megalomaniacal former NASA engineer living in exile amongst a society of androids he created. He joins our heroes, becoming the pragmatic brain of the group, much like Spock to  Carl Franklin’s  Dr. McCoy-esque Fred. At age 48, the former child star was  Journey ’s senior cast member, with four decades of acting credits stretching back to 1938. He’s best known to genre fans for the  Planet Of The Apes  franchise, where he played apes Cornelius, Caesar, and Galen (the latter on the 1974-75 TV spin-off). McDowall’s career continued for two decades after  Journey , in films like  Fright Night  (1985) and TV shows like  The New Lassie . (As a child he had starred in 1943’s  Lassie Come Home .) His later years included frequent voice acting roles in animated TV shows and movies, including the Mad Hatter on  Batman The Animated Series . He died at age 70 in 1998.

2. Ike Eisenmann as Scott Jordan

The “Will Robinson” of  The Fantastic Journey , 14-year-old Scott is the moral center of the series. He’s mature enough to understand the adult world, but young enough to still be relatable for a kid audience. Viewers of a certain vintage will recognize Ike as Tony, the harmonica-playing, extra-terrestrial sibling in  Escape To Witch Mountain  (1975) and  Return From Witch Mountain  (1978). Ike was a frequent face (and voice) on TV and film throughout the ‘80s, most notably as Scotty’s nephew in  Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan  (1982) and in numerous voice acting roles. He has continued to work in the entertainment business in mostly behind-the-scenes roles, directing, producing, and working in post-production and dialogue replacement. He also made a cameo appearance in Disney’s  Race To Witch Mountain  (with former co-star Kim Richards) in 2009.

3. Carl Franklin as Dr. Fred Walters

At age 27, Fred (a “young doctor just out of medical school”) is the action hero of the team. He’s quick to throw a punch – and a funky dresser, despite the lack of any discernable laundry facilities. Fred is the only adult survivor from the boat that brought the team to the island, and extremely protective of Scott (whom he calls “Scotty”). Fred grew up in a tough, inner-city neighborhood where he watched his mother victimized (as he recalls in the finale). After  Journey  ended, Franklin went on to roles in  McClain’s Law  and  The A-Team  before moving to a career behind the camera in the ‘90s. He directed the critically acclaimed neo-noir thriller  One False Move  (1992) and directed and wrote  Devil In A Blue Dress  (1995). More recently he’s directed premium cable dramas like  House Of Cards ,  Homeland , and  Bloodline .  

4. Katie Saylor as Liana

When NBC decided to pick up  The Fantastic Journey  pilot to series, they made some immediate changes. Most of the cast was not retained, a sub-plot about a stranded WW II pilot ( Desi Arnaz Jr .) was cut, and new cast members were added. Liana (“the daughter of an Atlantean father and an extra-terrestrial mother”) is not seen in the expanded pilot, but her black cat is. Sil-El (played by a collection of kitties known as  The Felix Team ) communicates telepathically with Liana, who is clad in an assortment of stylish capes (again, where is the ironing board?). At age 25, Saylor was a veteran of drive-in-oriented B-movies, including  Dirty O’Neill  (1974),  The Swinging Barmaids  (1975), and  Supervan  (1977). Saylor also appeared with  Journey  co-star  Jared Martin  in  Men Of The Dragon  (1974), an ABC TV movie that was a pilot for a martial arts action series. Saylor stepped away from  The Fantastic Journey  after episode eight due to an illness and did not return before the cancellation. As of this writing, she has not acted again.

5. Jared Martin as Varian

Already marooned on the island when the castaways arrive in the pilot, Varian befriends and, later, joins forces with Scott and Fred. He explains that he is a musician and healer from the year 2230, a time when there are “no more countries and no more war.” Despite being six-foot-three and athletic, Martin was cast against type as the super-chill pacifist of the group. His biggest role before  The Fantastic Journey  was in  Men Of The Dragon  with Saylor.   His most significant role after the series was as Dusty Farlow on  Dallas , a role he played on and off for 12 years. He was also a lead on  War Of The Worlds , a 1988-90 syndicated sci-fi series. He died in 2017 at age 75.

6. Bruce Lansbury (Creator)

The British-born younger brother of Angela Lansbury produced and/or wrote sci-fi and fantasy TV classics like  The Wild Wild West ,  The Magician ,  Wonder Woman ,  The Powers Of Matthew Starr , and  Knight Rider . Lansbury also produced  Buck Rogers In The 25 th  Century  (1979-81), where he cast Roddy McDowall and employed three producers, two directors, a composer and a writer from  The Fantastic Journey ! He died in 2017.

7. Leonard Katzman (Producer)

Katzman did some of his earliest work for his uncle Sam Katzman on Saturday morning adventure serials, a format that would provide inspiration for  The Fantastic Journey  thirty years later. Leonard had a prolific four-decade career, but he’s best known as the mastermind behind  Dallas . On that long-running nighttime soap he employed more than twenty people associated with  The Fantastic Journey  – including an actress ( Susan Howard ) he fired after the  Journey  pilot. Katzman died in 1996.

8. D.C. Fontana (Story Editor)

Dorothy “D.C.” Fontana is perhaps best known as a writer and story editor on the original  Star Trek . She also contributed scripts to genre classics like  The Six Million Dollar Man ,  Babylon 5 ,  Star Trek: The Next Generation ,  Buck Rogers  (for Bruce Lansbury), and  Dallas  (for Leonard Katzman). And, proving that everything in Hollywood comes full circle, she was also a writer for  War Of The Worlds  starring Jared Martin!

The Fantastic Journey

A scientific expedition in the Atlantic Ocean headed by Dr Paul Jordan becomes lost in the Bermuda Triangle and washes up on an uncharted island. In the pilot episode they meet Varian, a man from the 23rd century who tells them about a place to the East called Evailand where they can find a door way back to there own time. Most of the group either died or made it home leaving Varian, Fred Walters and Paul's 13 yr. old son Scott to make there way east. Along the way they meet up with travelers from other times, planets and dimensions who have also become trapped. Liana, a woman with an alien mother and an Atlantium father with her cat Sil-l, is the first to join them. Then Jonathan Willoway, a scientist from the 60s is invited to join. Together they travel through portals from one dimension to the next hoping to find the one that leads home.

Cette série met en scène une équipe composée de gens issus d'époques différentes, perdus dans le triangle des Bermudes, et qui tentent de découvrir un moyen de retourner dans leurs mondes respectifs.

The Edinburgh Castle’s hallowed Esplanade hosted over 800 performers, wowing packed crowds night after night, and with its increased capacity, the Tattoo hit an impressive 96% attendance cross the 26 Shows performed.

The third, and final instalment, of Creative Director Michael Brathwaite’s tenure with the Tattoo, Journeys capped off the successes of Voices and Stories . Framed by a time in which togetherness is as important as it has ever been, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, connected audiences, taking them on a voyage of shared histories and cultures from across the world.

In a dazzling display of lights, dance, music, colour and precision, the Show merged the traditional elements the Tattoo is known and loved for, with modern twists and fresh, creative elements. All brought to life by the wonderfully varied cast from the USA, India, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, and homegrown acts from around the UK.

With a host of offerings, packages, and experiences, Tattoo fans enjoyed the show in myriad ways, including the 10-year anniversary of our partnership with Contini – hosts of our Cannonball hospitality package. The Tattoo also proudly hosted Presenting Partner, Innis & Gunn and Official Vehicle Partner, John Clark Motor Group.

As one fantastic journey ends, another begins, with the Tattoo prepared to celebrate its 75th anniversary next year under the direction of new Creative Director, Alan Lane. The upcoming year promises to be filled with excitement and spectacular performances, with tickets on sale now.

NCAA champions powering Team USA beach volleyball at Paris Games

U.s. pairs bring college chemistry, experience to olympic level.

As the Parisian sunset cast a tangerine tapestry behind the iconic Eiffel Tower and its majestic lattice of steel girders and rivets, anticipation began building in the beach volleyball stadium below. 

First the lights went out, bringing a collective gasp from the crowd. Then they returned, transitioning through a spectrum of colors illuminating the court in blue, purple, red and orange as spectators oohed and aahed over the changes and music thumped through the venue. The Eiffel Tower sparkled overhead in unison with the stadium's lights. Spectators held their cell phone flashlights high throughout the spectacle. 

When the lights turned white again on this July evening in Paris, the U.S. beach volleyball pair of Sarah Hughes and Kelly Cheng emerged with their arms raised and waving to the roaring crowd as they stepped onto the cool sand court for their first match of the Paris Olympics. 

Anyone could be forgiven for mistaking the athletes for rock stars crossing a stage, for beach volleyball — or perhaps any Olympic sport — has never seen a venue or an environment quite like Eiffel Tower Stadium. It's made beach volleyball the diva of the Paris Olympics, luring regular spots on primetime broadcasts with its postcard-worthy backdrop and party atmosphere. The top-shelf billing illustrates the sport's exploding popularity around the world since it first debuted at the 1992 Barcelona Games as a demonstration sport. 

But under these lights, new stars may soon be shining. 

This isn't just another quadrennial event for the U.S. team. It's a potential turning point in the competitiveness of the United States on the world stage. Both American teams entered Paris ranked among the top five pairings in the world, raising hopes of seeing the U.S. women's teams win multiple medals in the sport for the first time since 2012.  

But there's unique reasons to believe this success will be sustained, if not strengthened. For the first time, every member of this U.S. team rose to the national level after playing for a college beach volleyball program and competing for — and at times dominating — NCAA championships. Even more, both Olympics squads were also collegiate tandems, taking their successful pairings directly from the college court to the Olympic sand. 

It's made college sports a training ground for beach volleyball on a scale never seen in the United States. 

"The USA in general is just pumping out beach volleyball players — fantastic beach volleyball players," said Taryn Kloth, part of the world's second-ranked beach volleyball team with former LSU teammate Kristen Nuss. "And then, the competition (in college) is raising the level because you have to get better. So playing against very solid players, especially throughout college — and then going into the pros — it's just, it's a whole new game." 

The U.S. certainly hasn't lacked talent in beach volleyball. In fact, it's been exceptional — and at times dominant — with names that are now legendary. 

First came the dominating tandem of Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor, who brought home the first three U.S. gold medals from 2004 to 2012. In winning their final gold medal, Jennings and May-Treanor defeated fellow Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, who took silver in London. Jennings then paired with Ross to win bronze in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. In 2021 in Tokyo, Ross and Alix Klineman teamed up to take home the gold. 

But the development opportunities in the U.S. weren't set up to scale the talent of future generations. Unlike indoor women's volleyball, which had 762 schools and 9,934 athletes competing in the NCAA alone the year beach volleyball debuted at the Barcelona Games, only a handful of colleges and universities fielded beach volleyball teams, mostly at the club level. 

By the late 2000s, the growth of collegiate volleyball was slowing. After adding 238 programs during the 1990s — a 33% growth rate — only 48 programs were started in all three NCAA Divisions from 2000 to 2009. In response, the American Volleyball Coaches Association started promoting the concept of collegiate beach volleyball. Pepperdine, Long Beach State and Florida State were among the first, and the NCAA added beach volleyball to its Emerging Sports for Women program in 2012. The strategic initiative was designed to expand athletic opportunities by identifying and supporting sports with the potential to grow into fully recognized NCAA sports. 

Rowing and women's ice hockey are examples of sports that got their foothold in the NCAA through the program. Some sports, once in the program, take longer than others to meet the minimum 40 schools required to sponsor a sport before it can be considered for an NCAA championship. Triathlon entered the program in 2014 and is near the 40-schools threshold a decade later. 

Beach volleyball needed just three years. 

As soon as the sport entered the program, the number of schools and athletes competing in it took off. From 14 schools and 204 athletes in 2012, participation more than tripled by 2015, and the sport held its first championship a year later. That year, Hughes and Cheng took home the first of back-to-back NCAA championships. The sport's growth only accelerated. In 2023, there were 91 programs and 1,615 athletes competing in beach volleyball. 

"It's increasing the number of athletes, young women, that are participating in the sport," Sean Scott, USA Volleyball's director of beach volleyball, said of the college game's impact. "And then, as a result, you're more likely to find the next Taryn, Kristen, Sarah, Kelly. … When you put on an NCAA championship, or a major competition like that, that everyone's shooting for, and then you're bringing the best of the best together to compete against that, the level is only going to rise year over year. Because the athletes, the coaches, everyone's going to try to get better." 

And it's starting to show on the international stage. 

First there's Nuss and Kloth, an unlikely pairing from LSU who have dominated on the international circuit, defeating Tokyo silver medalists Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy of Australia while rising to No. 2 in the world. 

After starting her college career in indoor volleyball at Creighton, earning All-America honors in 2016 and 2018 and being named MVP of the Big East championship as a junior, the 6-foot-4 Kloth took a leap of faith as a graduate transfer by moving on to LSU to play beach volleyball. She'd never played the game before their first practices and was embarrassed when most of her first serves went into the net.  

But once she started training with the quick and nimble 5-foot-6 Nuss during the COVID-19 shutdown, the pair became unstoppable. In 2021, they went 36-0 and won 32 of their matches in straight sets. 

The chemistry developed during that collegiate onslaught has carried with them to the international circuit — and now to within reach of a medal. 

 "And not just on the court; she's like my sister," Nuss said of their tight bond. "I don't have a sister, and she's kinda taken that role. We genuinely enjoy spending time together. We just like having fun. So when you have that off the court, it's just kind of perfect on the court. It works. We definitely trust each other." 

Hughes and Cheng feel similarly. 

After going 147-4 in their three years together at Southern California, during which Cheng was named national player of the year twice and Hughes received three of her four career All-America honors, the pair tried taking individual professional paths for a time before reuniting in 2022. 

They realized the chemistry they'd developed on the college court was the engine of their success. It showed when they came back together, immediately winning a World Tour title in 2022 and the world championship last year. 

Now, they are in Paris and have the world's No. 4 ranking. 

"It's more than the volleyball," Cheng said about the chemistry they developed at Southern California. "I think you can develop the skills, but the chemistry piece, it's harder to develop. So being able to have that with Sarah, it just makes sense." 

And now, the four former college athletes are the new faces of American beach volleyball. Each went 3-0 in pool play, dropping just one set in those six matches. There's a good chance that one — maybe even both — teams will bring home medals next week.  

But to get there, they'll need to get past each other in a potential semifinal matchup. It will be an event sure to draw attention, perhaps with a prime-time broadcast where the glow of the Eiffel Tower and the energized crowd will add additional luster to inspire a new generation of players. 

And that generation is already coming — larger than ever before. 

According to Volleyball Life — which manages registrations for youth events — more than 60,000 teens are playing beach volleyball today. It's a talent pool of young women unlike anything that existed when Jennings and May-Treanor brought home their first gold medal. It's a generation of athletes honing their beach-specific skills earlier than ever before, aiming for college scholarships — and, for some, to become the next Kloth, Nuss, Hughes or Cheng.
