2023 Tata Safari to get partially self-driving ADAS features: Details
2023 Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic Walkaround & Price | Sporty & Luxurious | TOI Auto
- Will get a larger touchscreen unit and digital driver’s display
- To be launched in the coming weeks
Tata Motors has commenced the official bookings for the 2023 Safari . The three-row SUV will soon be updated with new features and ADAS tech as recently showcased with the Red Dark Edition at the Auto Expo 2023 .
While Tata is unlikely to make any cosmetic changes, the cabin of the new Safari will be equipped with a host of new features. As seen at the Auto Expo, the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment will be swapped for a larger 10.25-inch unit along with a seven-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The Safari will also be festooned with more modern and premium features such as a powered driver seat with a memory function and a 360-degree camera.
Furthermore, the Safari and Harrier siblings will also be offered with ADAS features. This will be a first for a Tata model and will include active safety features such as a forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, a blind spot monitor, a rear cross-traffic alert with collision warning, high beam assist, traffic sign recognition, and a lane departure warning.
Mechanically, the Safari will continue with the same 2.0-litre diesel engine which has an output of 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. This powertrain has been updated to meet the upcoming BS6 Phase 2 and RDE norms that will be mandatory for cars manufactured from 1 April, 2023.
While there is no official word from Tata, the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine showcased at the Expo could also make it to the new Safari.

- ADAS Tech Differences Between Mahindra XUV700 & Tata Safari/Harrier
- 94 % users like this story
- Tata has recently launched 2023 updated Safari & Harrier with ADAS tech
- The ADAS-equipped Mahindra XUV700 is the direct rival of the Tata Safari
- Here's all the difference between the ADAS tech in Tata Safari/Harrier and Mahindra XUV700
Tata Safari and Harrier have become the first models from Tata Motors to get advanced ADAS tech. Tata recently launched the 2023 updated models of Safari & Harrier with many new and advanced features. These include a 10.24-inch large touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver's display with added features, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, a 360-degree view camera system, etc. But the most interesting addition in both the Tata SUVs was the much-awaited ADAS tech. ADAS, for the uninitiated stands for advanced driver assistance system.
Tata says that the ADAS tech has been calibrated according to Indian conditions & is built to take on surprises. On the other hand, Mahindra XUV700 , which is the main rival to the Tata Safari, has already established itself in the segment as an advanced SUV equipped with accurate, reliable, and consistent ADAS tech. Though both SUVs claim of having the best ADAS tech in the segment, there are some major hardware & feature differences between the ADAS system of Safari & XUV700. Here are all the differences between the ADAS tech of the two SUVs.
Tata Safari VS Mahindra XUV700: ADAS Hardware Differences
Both the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 offer a radar + camera-based ADAS system which is considered more accurate, reliable, and consistent than the camera-based ADAS available in some cars. But the difference lies in the number of radars. The Mahindra XUV700 gets just one radar placed in the middle of the front lower grill of the vehicle. On the other hand, Tata Safari gets a total of 3 radars. One radar is placed in the middle of the front lower grill. The other two are placed on both corners of the rear bumper.
The three-radar setup of the Tata Safari enables some of the advanced ADAS features like rear-cross traffic alert/auto braking, rear blind spot warning, rear collision warning, etc. This is missing on the Mahindra offering. However, when it comes to ADAS hardware for the front side of the vehicle, both Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 are equally equipped with one radar sensor and one front-facing camera.
Tata Safari VS Mahindra XUV700: ADAS Feature Differences
Although Tata Safari/Harrier has more radars than Mahindra XUV700, Tata has not provided the most useful ADAS features like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist in the Safari & Harrier. Both of these features are usually the most commonly used ADAS features. We hope going forward, Tata Motors will introduce these features to complete the ADAS suite.
As Safari & Harrier have all the hardware required for adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, there stands a possibility that Tata might add these two ADAS features in Safari/Harrier at a later stage through software updates. Other than these two ADAS features, both Tata Safari/Harrier and Mahindra XUV700 get all other ADAS features like front collision warning, auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, auto high beam assist, etc.

Verdict : The Safari gets the ADAS tech in the top-end XZA+(O) trim that is priced between Rs 24.46 lakh to Rs 25.01 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier too gets the ADAS tech in the top-end XZA+(O) trim that is priced between Rs 23.61 lakh to Rs 24.06 lakh (ex-showroom). The Mahindra XUV700 gets the ADAS tech on the AX7 & AX7 Luxury Pack trims. The two trims of the XUV700 are priced between Rs 19.88 lakh to Rs 25.47 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes Mahindra XUV700 a more affordable ADAS-equipped SUV than Tata Safari/Harrier. And not to forget, XUV700 also gets adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist features that make it a true level 2 autonomous vehicle, unlike Tata Safari/Harrier.

10 ADAS features introduced in Tata Safari, Harrier explained
- This is the first time that Tata Motors has introduced Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) in any of its models.
After rivals like Mahindra and Mahindra, MG Motor and Hyundai Motor equipped their flagship models with Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), Tata Motors too has joined the bandwagon to offer this advanced safety features in its SUVs. On Wednesday, February 22, Tata Motors launched the Red Dark Editions of the Safari and Harrier SUVs. These models are offered with several ADAS features which promise to make driving a lot more easier. However, the ADAS features have not been included in its best-selling cars like Nexon or Punch yet.
Here is a quick look at 10 ADAS features Tata Motors is offering in the Red Dark Editions of Harrier and Safari SUVs. While most of these features are also available in some the rival models, Tata Motors does not offer features like Adaptive Cruise Control.

Forward Collision Warning
Tata Motors has equipped the Red Dark Harrier and Safari models with sensors to make use of the ADAS features. The sensors help the vehicle detect its surroundings and make autonomous calls to keep it safe. The Forward Collision Warning alerts the driver when it detects possible crash with any vehicle at the front. It calculates the distance between the two and their speed to assess the situation.
Rear Collision Warning
The sensor at the rear also helps detect incoming vehicle. It triggers the hazard lights of the vehicle to alert the other.
Autonomous Emergency Braking
The emergency braking warning is triggered when the system detects any obstruction in front while on the move. The obstruction include vehicles and pedestrians. The system triggers an audio alert for the driver. It also helps the vehicle to a complete stop to avoid collision.
Blind Spot Detection
Tata Motors has equipped the Harrier and Safari SUVs with blind spot detection alerts on the move. This feature is particularly helpful while switching lanes. The alert comes alive on the ORVMS with an audio warning to make the driver aware of any approaching vehicle from the sides.
Door Open Alert
The same sensor also helps occupants of the Harrier and Safari to avoid situation where opening the doors could hit incoming traffic. The system detects such scenario and triggers alarm if anyone is trying to get off the vehicle.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert
This ADAS feature is particularly helpful when trying to park a vehicle in a crowded parking spot. The feature alerts the driver if it detects incoming vehicle when it is being pulled out from its spot. The rear camera of a vehicle can only detect what is right behind the car, but the sensor helps the vehicle to monitor the surrounding for better safety.
Lane Departure Warning
This feature will work mostly on roads and highways where lane markings are clear. The system detects the lane used by the vehicle and will alert the driver if the car deviates from its lane.
Lane Change Alert
This feature will also work on roads with lane markings. The system will alert the driver of incoming vehicles when trying to change lanes.
High Beam Assist
This is another useful feature for vehicles on highway, especially after dark. The vehicle automatically switches to low beam if it detects vehicle coming from opposite side to avoid blinding the other driver. It switches back to high beam once the vehicle passes.
Traffic Sign Recognition
This feature helps the system read road signs like speed limits and warns the driver. Speed limit alert appears on the driver display to help make corrections.
