Switzerland mustsee v2

Matterhorn:

World famous and the symbol for Switzerland, this mountain is the most photographed in the world. It faces the four cardinal directions and is the tenth highest mountain in Switzerland, but because it has a pyramid shape it is very challenging to climb. The first ascent was in 1865 and cost the lives of 4 out of 7 alpinists. It gets its German name from the words matte meaning meadow and horn meaning peak.

Switzerland mustsee2 v2

This village is like no other. It lies at the foot of what is probably the world’s most famous mountain. It also is located in an enormous hiking and ski region, making it a great vacation spot, even in the summer. This is a car-free zone vacation spot, making it possible to preserve its historical features as well.

Switzerland ms3

As the capital of Switzerland it has managed to retain its historic features. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 4 miles/6 km of arcades, or as the locals like to call it ‘Lauben,’ making it the longest weather-sheltered shopping in Europe. They also hold the seat of Switzerland’s government, many festivals, a bear park, and beautiful historic buildings that line the streets.

Switzerland ms4

This gateway to central Switzerland sits on Lake Lucerne and has a view of the mountain from wherever you are. Aside from the view it has the Chapel Bridge which is one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges. A tourist favorite is to visit its souvenir and watch shops, which Switzerland is known for.

Destination Must-Do's

Switzerland md1

Swiss Chocolate:

It is only expected that the country that created chocolate is the country that consumes the most chocolate as well. It was created by adding milk to chocolate to try to reduce the cost and make it more palatable, which lead to milk chocolate. Switzerland now has over seven major chocolate companies. The best part is if you are a chocolate lover you can tour these companies and try their many different chocolates.

Switzerland md2

Swiss fondue:

Swiss fondue was created by local villagers with limited access to fresh foods in the winter. They discovered that if you heated the aged cheese with wines, garlic, and herbs then dipped your stale bread it would soften in the flavorful cheese mixture. Families would cook together in one pot and eat by the warm fire, becoming a Swiss winter tradition over time known as fondue.

Switzerland md3

GoldenPass:

This train ride is like a day vacation. You experience two languages, three regions, and eight lakes. The company focuses on journey and comfort not just transportation. It has seven different lines you can choose from, with the most famous being the panoramic that has panoramic windows that allow you to be one with the landscape. The other is the chocolate train which is a first class trip that lets you experience the production of famous Swiss cheese, the creation of Swiss chocolate, and a chance to see its magnificent castle.

Switzerland md4

Glacier Express:

This may be the slowest express train in the world, but for a reason. There is so much to experience on this journey that they slow it down for you. It takes you from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train ride is an eight-hour panoramic journey. You travel into the Alps, go through 91 tunnels, and 291 bridges.

You're in for a treat as you truly savor the local flavors of the Alpine region. In Austria, look for the beef soup -- Rindsuppe -- a clear soup with gold color that is as tasty as it looks! The Tafelspitz is beef boiled in broth, often served with an apple and horseradish sauce. It's one of Austria's most savory dishes.

Nikhil's 8 days trip to Switzerland

Trip was memorable and team behind from Travel Triangle was very Co-operative and supportive. Hotel classes selection was very very good. Team is so kind and helpful. I would still suggest to improve services for customized tours . It is not just doing booking on my behalf that I expect, it is beyond that. Improve provided service/Support and assistance that even google can't.

Auric's 10 days trip to Europe

The overall trip organised by Street Romeo was excellent, except one glitch which was they didn’t book the tickets to top of innsbruck in Austria instead only till hungerburg. We had to book the tickets to top of innsbruck separately which cost us 120 euros from our own pocket. Secondly another issue I had with booking an international trip from Travel triangle is that they charge an exorbitant amount of Rs 15000 per person for visa assistance which is not justified, it should be hardly 2000 per person at max. I would definitely recommend Street Romeo for international trips to everyone and myself will also use their services in future.

Akshay's 9 days trip to Europe

First of all many thanks to infinty & beyond travel for organizing mesmerizing and hassle free europe trip! Especially devyansh & sumedha you were very supportive also great suggestion of hotels and trip, the only tip is please arrange pick up and drop of travellers for particular day tours and destination (only with child and family). Visa travel documents should assembled and cross checked by the tour company . Else everything is five star . Travel triangle and the agent company got confused with final pricing , but it didn’t got in our way to the trip vouchers. Best moments were the trip to salzburg to hallstatt, although we arranged that trip ! Best landscape and snow in the march season.

Team Mermorable were great in terms of pre tour planning, visa guidance, planning prior to tour and on trip co-ordination as well. Thanks for a wonderful trip.

How to Create the Best Switzerland and Austria Itinerary

HOW TO SPEND AN AMAZING 7-10 DAYS IN AUSTRIA AND SWITZERLAND

Ready to explore Central Europe in all its beauty? Make sure Austria and Switzerland are at the top of your list! These two countries offer everything from romantic getaways, stunning outdoor vistas, fascinating cityscapes and so much more.

Austria and Switzerland are some of my favorite travel destinations. I love both for different reasons. And with this Switzerland and Austria itinerary, I am sharing my most beloved places with you, so you can now plan that Austria and Swiss itinerary now!

In this 7-10 day itinerary, you will find out what to do in Austria and Switzerland, the most beautiful places to visit,  how to get around, and more important travel tips for these two countries.

TIPS FOR VISITING SWITZERLAND AND AUSTRIA

Before you kick off your Switzerland and Austria trip, here are some tips to maximize your experiences!

Visa For Switzerland and Austria

If you’re an EU citizen, you don’t need any extra visa – just your Schengen visa to enjoy your vacation time in both countries.

So go explore new lands without worrying about unnecessary paperwork – with so many great places to see, there’s no excuse for staying put at home! If you are not an EU citizen but have a Schengen visa, you can also visit both countries without hassle.

How to Get Into Switzerland/Austria

  • For this itinerary, if you fly, I suggest flying into Zurich and leaving from Vienna – or the other way around.
  • Both cities have international airports that are well-connected to the city center .
  • From there, you can either pick up a rental car or use public transportation.

Again, I suggest starting in Zurich and leaving from Vienna (or the other way around).

  • Both cities are also easily reachable from many cities in Europe via train.
  • Arriving via train might be a good idea. Because it means you are already in the city center. Buses are also available but trains are probably the better option.

How to Get Around Switzerland and Austria

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Switzerland has got your back! Their public transportation system is a well-oiled machine that will make sure you always arrive where you need to be. It’s so efficient it might just be the best in all of creation!

But I do not have major complaints about Austrian public transportation, either.

It is also less stressful than navigating small streets and packed city centers. Plus, it’s a cheaper option (most likely) that doesn’t limit your flexibility.

Luzern Interlaken Express window view

TIP:   SWISS TRAVEL PASS

The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to use buses, trains, and boats without extra costs in Switzerland. Even some mountain excursions are included (like Mount Rigi), and for most others, you get a 50% discount. The Swiss Travel Pass also covers most museums and entrances to castles .

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is quite expensive but it will pay off (it always does when I get mine). There are passes for 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 days available. I suggest, getting the 4-day pass for this itinerary, if you use public transportation. Click here to find the rates for a Swiss Travel Pass.

In Austria, public transportation is normally cheaper than in Switzerland. What I normally do is buy single tickets. Especially day passes for Austrian cities are quite affordable.

➡️  GET YOUR SWISS TRAVEL PASS HERE

If you drive (in your own car), you need toll stickers for Switzerland and Austria. You can buy them at gas stations near the border or once you are in the country – but only use those roads once you have the sticker. If you have a rental car, they might (!) be already included.

For Austria, you can buy a 10-day toll sticker for around $10 (the shortest period possible). In Austria, there are a few private roads that charge extra . For this itinerary, however, you will not use them often.

For Switzerland, you would need to pay an annual sticker (about $40 or avoid motorways).

While both countries are mountainous , they are quite easy to drive and a lot of fun. I actually enjoy driving in both countries. However, if you are not experienced in driving narrow mountain roads, this might not be the perfect choice for you.

Just watch the speed limit, only park when you are allowed to do so, and keep in mind that the streets can be narrow.

In case, you decide to rent a car, I suggest this site to find the best prices. I normally use my own car whenever I drive in Austria or Switzerland. I have used this site to find a rental car for other destinations, though (e.g. Albania).

If you want to use the car in both countries, make sure you are allowed to do so.

➡️ Find the best deals for rental cars here.

Both countries are expensive – I mean like really expensive!  However, Switzerland is way more expensive than Austria. Check out my detailed tips on how to save money in Switzerland.

You can save a bit of money by bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it with fresh water from the water fountains (they are numerous in both countries and at all of the places I mention here).

Tips are not really expected in either country. You can, but there is no need.

In Austria, people speak a German dialect , while in Switzerland, there are four official languages. But the places on this itinerary only include German-speaking areas .

Since all of these places are very popular amongst tourists from all over the world, most people speak basic English , and you should be fine even if you don’t speak German (learning a few words never hurt, though).

ITINERARY AUSTRIA AND SWITZERLAND IN 10 DAYS

Here are the places I mention in this itinerary:

  • SWITZERLAND: Zurich + Lucerne
  • AUSTRIA: Salzburg + Hallstatt + Vienna

PLACES TO VISIT IN SWITZERLAND

If you fly into Zurich (or get there by train), then your trip starts with a beautiful city in the northern part of Switzerland.

Zurich : 2  Days

Zurich is a beautiful city that serves as the unofficial capital of the country and will surely provide plenty of sightseeing opportunities.

Where to go in Zurich Switzerland

Whether you want to explore the city’s main attractions or take a scenic jaunt outside the city and get up to stunning Ebenalp Mountain, there are plenty of activities for all types.

My tip is to stay in Zurich for about 1- 2 days.  S o you can visit not only the main attractions in Zurich but also do a (half) day trip to the Rhine Falls or do another day trip.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR ZURICH

Public transport is top-notch, and if you’re looking for a more leisurely pace then why not rent a bike (for free!) and hit the roads in style? You’ll get around much faster than driving anyway, so leave your ride at home and explore on foot or with public transportation instead.

One of the fun things to do in Zurich is rent a bike and explore this beautiful town on two wheels – for free!

THINGS TO DO IN ZURICH

I highly suggest only spending half a day in Zurich, and then doing a full day trip to Appenzell & Aescher, or the Rhine Falls. You can check out my guide on the best day trips from Zurich here.

I highly suggest only spending half a day in Zurich and then doing one full-day trip maybe to the Aescher and Ebenalp Mountain.

  • Lake Zurich
  • Bahnhofstrasse (the main shopping street in Zurich)
  • Lindenhof (offering nice views from a hill right in the heart of the city)
  • Uetliberg (Zurich´s “house mountains” – a beautiful green place close to the hustle of bustle of Zurich)
  • Appenzell & Ebenalp & Aescher (day trip)
  • For a detailed 2-day Zurich itinerary (with more travel tips for the city),  check out my itinerary here .

ACTIVITIES/TOURS IN ZURICH

➡️ Zurich: Lindt Home of Chocolate Museum Entry Ticket

➡️ Zurich: Thermal Baths and Spa with Panoramic Views

➡️ Zurich Old Town Walking Tour: 2-Hours

WHERE TO STAY IN ZURICH

I recommend staying close to the city center, but since public transport is pretty good, you can also book a hotel a bit further away, and you will still be mobile.

Luxury: Baur au Lac: Zurich has some great luxury hotels that are amazing for getting spoiled and enjoying life. Baur au Lac is one of the best-rated luxury hotels close to the city center.  ➡️ Book your stay at Baur au Lac here .

Mid-Range: The Glärnischhof by TRINITY: This 4-star hotel – The Glärnischhof by TRINITY  is one of the best-rated mid-range hotels close to the city center, right next to the famous Bahnhofstrasse. ➡️ Book your stay at The Glärnischhof by TRINITY here .

Budget: Oldtown Hostel Otter:  Warning, there are not many budget hotels in Zurich. This is a good-rated hostel in Zurich. I stayed here once and for a hostel, it actually was quite good for a hostel – especially because of its great location. ➡️ Book your stay at Oldtown Hostel Otter here .

You will find my  accommodation guide for Zurich here.

From Zurich to Lucerne , it takes about an hour by car (or by train). Whichever means you opt for, it is easy and a nice ride/drive.

Lucerne: 2 Days

Dreamy, picturesque Lucerne is a must-see destination for any Swiss getaway! Nestled in the heart of Europe and snuggling up to the stunning Alps , this beautiful city offers a unique combination of vibrant culture and breathtaking nature.

Chapel Bridge 2016 in Lucerne - Can you spot me and Puppygak on th bridge?

TRAVEL TIPS FOR LUCERNE

Lucerne and Zurich have one thing in common – they’ll make sure your wallet takes a big hit!

Public transport within Lucerne is speedy, reliable and on time but keep in mind that guest cards only work for getting around inside the city center not outside (sorry Mount Rigi).

THINGS TO DO IN LUCERNE

  • Chapel Bridge (the historic wooden bridge that offers great views)
  • Town Center (Lucerne has a beautiful old town which is home to some fantastic architecture)
  • Lake Lucerne (one of the biggest lakes in Switzerland)
  • Head to at least one mountain peak – each has its own charm.
  • Mount Rigi (it is the best choice for a quick getaway) – the cogwheel ticket is also included in the Swiss Travel Pass
  • Mount Titlis (this is a full-day tour with tons of activities on Mount Titlis)
  • Mount Pilatus (this is a great choice for some stunning views and to watch paragliders – or even try this activity out yourself)

ACTIVITIES/TOURS IN LUCERNE

➡️ Lucerne: Walking Tour to Chapel Bridge and Old Town

➡️ Lucerne: Swiss Museum of Transport Full Day Pass

➡️ Kriens: Mount Pilatus Roundtrip Cable Car Ticket to the Peak

WHERE TO STAY IN LUCERNE

Luxury: Schweizerhof Lucerne:  If you want to book a luxury hotel in Lucerne, I recommend this beautiful 5* hotel. ➡️ Book your stay at Schweizerhof Lucerne here.

Mid-Range: Hotel des Alpes : On my last Lucerne trip, I stayed at Hotel des Alpes. The room view was amazing (and included views of the Chapel Bridge and Mount Pilatus). ➡️ Book your stay at Schweizerhof Lucerne here.

Budget: The Bed + Breakfast: If you want to stay in a budget hotel, have a look at this B&B. Some rooms have a shared bathroom, and some have a private one. ➡️ Book your stay at The Bed & Breakfast here.

Check out my accommodation guide for Lucerne.

From Switzerland to Austria – or From Austria to Switzerland: 1 Day

Switzerland is stunning but so is Austria – the towns, classic architecture, and breathtaking views will have your head in a spin! Grab a train or car ride from Lucerne to Hallstatt – for maximum convenience with minimal stress. Trust me though – this scenery won’t disappoint.

  • I´d rent a car and drive to Hallstatt (with a rental car, check prices for dropping off in a different country, etc.). You can check out rental cars here.
  • Or I would  take a train from Lucerne to Hallstatt.

Are you ready for a scenic adventure? If so, getting from Lucerne to Hallstatt is definitely the road trip for you! It’ll take about 6-10 hours depending on how fast and often you want to stop. And trust me – with all that incredible scenery along the way, there will be an opportunity (or two!) worth pulling over for!

TIP: If you have a rental car, make sure you are allowed to cross borders!

If you stay in Zurich for 2 days and then 2 days in Lucerne, then this is Day 5 of your itinerary.

  • Check out more Switzerland travel tips.

PLACES TO SEE IN AUSTRIA

So, whether you use public transportation or road trip – here are places to visit in Austria.

Hallstatt :  1 Day

Hallstatt is a small town in Austria that’s made it big on Instagram! People have deemed it the prettiest place in Europe, if not globally – and while I can’t definitively say they’re right..Well…it sure is gorgeous.

Most beautiful places in Hallstatt

TRAVEL TIPS HALLSTATT

Get ready for a night in an enchanted mountain village! Hallstatt awaits you with its breathtaking lake views, unique charm, and popular appeal.

With visitors from all over the world (especially China!), this remote lakeside spot has become quite the hot commodity – but they don’t mess around when it comes to hotels; there are not many of them here so book now or start saving your pennies if you want that perfect private getaway!

What to do in Hallstatt Austria. Hike with views like this

Planning to experience Hallstatt’s stunning beauty? Make it a point to stay the night and start your morning before the rest of the Chinese tourists arrive in full force. Trust us, you won’t regret this decision!

With just one glorious day ahead of you, it makes sense that all attractions are accessible on foot; so hurry up and take advantage while there is still time!

THINGS TO DO IN HALLSTATT

  • Stroll Lake Promenade (with the pretty lake, mountains, and buildings)
  • Walk the Skywalk (a platform from where you have a great view)
  • Chill at Market Square (surrounded by pretty buildings)
  • Explore Salzwelten Hallstatt (which is the oldest salt mine in the world)
  • Walk the Upper Stairs (for more great views)
  • Go on the Lake (you can do boat tours, SUP, and more)
  • Here is a more detailed Hallstatt guide I have written for you – with more travel tips and info on Hallstatt.

WHERE TO STAY IN HALLSTATT

Unfortunately, there are not many hotels in Hallstatt, and hotels can be booked quickly.

HERITAGE HOTEL HALLSTATT : A well-reviewed hotel just in the heart of Hallstatt is the Heritage Hotel  Hallstatt. All rooms and suites offer views of the town and Lake Hallstatt.  This 4-star property looks like a perfect choice for your overnight stay in Hallstatt. ➡️  Check out rates and availabilities here.

HISTORIC LAKEVIEW APARTMENT: If you prefer an apartment, with a fully equipped kitchen, Historic Lakeview Apartment has a terrace, city views, a seating area, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom with a shower and free toiletries. ➡️  Find rates and availabilities here.

P.S. If you book via Booking.com, you can often cancel up to 24 hours before your arrival without any costs. ➡️  Check out hotel rates in Hallstatt here.

Just 1.5 hours away from the picturesque countryside, you’ll arrive in one of my favorite cities: Salzburg- and yes, I’m quite smitten. So ditch Hallstatt after lunchtime so that you can make some epic stops on your journey to this beautiful place – if romance isn’t already blooming then, by the time you reach there…it definitely will be!

Salzburg: 2 Days

Salzburg might not ring a bell for most Americans, but thanks to the movie The Sound of Music it has become an international star! Even if you don’t know much about Austria or Salzburg, there’s no doubt that this masterpiece from 1965 put them on everyone’s lips.

View from Museum der Moderne in Salzburg the best views

Salzburg is a stunning city and you won’t regret spending some quality time there. Whether it’s with your sweetheart or just by yourself, this gem of Europe will steal your heart away! Plus, at only 1.5 days long – Salzburg makes for the perfect quick getaway in an irresistibly charming atmosphere.

TRAVEL TIPS SALZBURG

The buses are way more fun than driving plus they won’t break the bank. So sit back and enjoy exploring every corner of this beautiful city without breaking a sweat or spending too much money!

There was enough free parking, and I had to walk for about 7 minutes to the bus stop, which was perfect for me.  ➡️  Check out the prices for the hotel here.

It’s time for your last leg of adventure! Salzburg to Vienna is just a train ride (or car, if you prefer) away – get ready for 2.5-3 hours of amazing travel experiences and rich culture awaiting in beautiful Austria’s capital city.

Vienna: 2 Days

But don’t worry if you’ll be traveling solo – Vienna offers plenty of adventures to explore whether or not Cupid had anything to do with it.

Vienna where to stay in Austria

Vienna is such an incredible city – it’s got a little something for everyone! Even if it isn’t your favorite dessert (in all honestly, it is not mine!), you have to try it at least once in your life.

VIENNA TRAVEL TIPS

This is a steadily paced tour. Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • 3 full days of included activities in a row (more if you add excursions)
  • All transportation by motor coach
  • About 4 hours of bus time daily

Walking, Terrain & Physical Considerations

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day on city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • During the visit to Neuschwanstein, travelers can expect to walk 25 minutes uphill on a steep incline to view the castle and further walking to get to the castles entrance, if included.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months, June-September, travelers can expect high temperatures from 70 F - 80 F and lows from 50 F - 60 F with occasional extreme heatwaves.

Physical Activity & Tour Pacing Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The group can’t miss any activities because of an individual’s needs.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, wheelchairs and walkers will be difficult to use and aren’t recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring any mobility aids with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • Most transportation on this tour is by private motor coach. Private motor coaches have steps required to board and often do not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • You must be able to manage your own luggage while on tour, as porterage isn’t guaranteed. This includes when arriving at hotels or airports and boarding trains or ferries.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto racks—sometimes located above their seats.
  • You should be prepared to manage your bags during ferry transfers. This includes carrying them up and down boarding ramps, lifting them onto racks, and navigating spaces crowded with other people and motor vehicles.
  • Elevators in hotels aren’t guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets, so our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • All destinations visited on this tour operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two small, round pins. You may also use a Type J plug with three small pins in Switzerland.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes six dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
  • Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest.
  • Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • On the tour extension, Hungary claims goulash as its national dish, but also is known for excellent salamis, cheeses, nut-flavored pancakes, freshwater fish, and preserved fruits.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro in Germany and Austria and the Swiss franc in Switzerland (and the Hungarian forint in Hungary on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To help you feel prepared before going on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will lead your group. Their role is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each day’s activities, and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and can’t provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is having access to our 24/7 Emergency Support Team.
  • Our extensive network of global offices and our integration of ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines help this dedicated team anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible, iterative way.
  • Using a combination of extensive training, thorough incident response planning, and decades of experience, this team assists travelers and Tour Directors in case of emergencies—stepping in for everything from personal health concerns and injuries to major world events.
  • Our On-Tour Support team can also provide additional help to travelers on tour, arranging assistance from outside specialists and liaising with local and international authorities as needed. And if there’s an emergency on the road or at home, the team will facilitate and support communication between travelers and their families.
  • Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Hungary on the tour extension, are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.

"From schnitzel to strudel, from The Sound of Music to Strauss, from the snow capped mountains to Salzburg - Austria is simply sensational"

Evana, Travel Director

Waltz through the scenic Austrian countryside

There is no shortage of countryside to allure us in Austria. Wander just beyond the well-trodden cities or further to towns like Hallstat and Durstein and float between the glassy lakes, soft grass hills and trails that wind around mountains.

Walk through the Baroque city of Salzburg

Trips to Salzburg come with a side of opulent architecture. Amble through this town overflowing with charming fountains, squares, cathedrals and cafes, taking time to soak up the immense elegance found in centuries-old spires and domes.

Take an elevator up to the Eagle's Nest

A short drive from Salzburg, through hollowed-out mountains, the Eagle’s Nest – or Kehlsteinhaus – is a monument to the greed of the Nazi regime. Rise up to this chalet perched on a sheer rock wall and be struck by the eerie contrast of the idyllic setting and the people who once roamed its halls.

See the State Opera in Vienna

With the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence, you can hear the unforgettable sounds of authentic opera at the State Opera in Vienna. The theater come alive as the curtains rise and the performance begins, so powerful you can hear the Soprano reaching her high notes from across the street.

Admire Emperor Maximilian's Golden Roof in Innsbruck

The 2,657 gleaming copper tiles that adorn this building are hard to miss. Enter the historic old town and catch sight of the roof glistening between storybook buildings and bright alps. Walk closer to study scenes of Maximilian’s life richly decorating the alcove.

Our top 5 things to do in Austria

With Trafalgar guiding the way, you'll do so much more than admire storybook towns and see the country’s most iconic spots. These are just a few of the culture-drenched things to do in Austria.

Belvedere Museum

Give yourself a day of freedom to uncover this vast collection of art and treasures. A highlight of any Vienna trip, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Belvedere Museum features three sites with baroque palaces, parks, views and 800 years of priceless artwork. Every corner commands your awe and attention.

Natural History Museum

Discover the depths of Mother Nature at the Natural History Museum in Salzburg. Your visit will reveal the edges of outerspace and what the world looked like millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed. You can then get aquainted with their distant relatives who amble around the museum’s reptile zoo.

Mozarts Wohnhaus

Step into the Mozart family residence, where Wolfgang wrote piano and violin concerts, serenades and symphonies. Witness the pianoforte on which the young prodigy used to play and gain a deeper insight into the fascinating life and work of this talented family.

Best museums in Austria

Austria's museums are a reflection of the country's reverence for all things natural, musical and artistic. Take a journey with Trafalgar into the museums of this country, and discover why Austria is still a culture capital of Europe.

Käsekrainer

Visit one of the Vienna’s beloved 'würstelständer' sausage stands to try the street food treat that’s an emblem of the country. Each satisfying bite of käsekrainer is a mix of Austrian sausage and rich melted cheese that oozes from within.

Wiener Schnitzel

Famed for servings so large, they spill off the plate, Austrians have long perfected this dish of tender veal coated in crunchy golden breadcrumbs. One of the country’s icons and a must-try on your trip to Austria, devour wiener schnitzel like a local with a petite side of potato salad.

Apfelstrudel

Get lost in layers of buttery pastry that swirl around baked apple and cinnamon in a dish that translates to ‘whirlpool’. Apfelstrudel tastes best in a cosy Viennese coffee house with a warm brew beside you.

Best food in Austria

Austrians are known for their love affair with meat and nostalgia-inducing desserts. Take a culinary adventure with Trafalgar, and we’ll delight you with the country’s very best gastronomical experiences.

What to pack for Austria

People packing for a tour

Opera attire

The opera is a must-do attraction in Austria, made even more enjoyable when you dress the part. If you have room, pack an elegant option in with your travel staples for this very special occasion.

Extra storage

Somewhere between the architecture and the alps, you’re bound to find your camera storage full. Pack an extra SD card or hard drive so you can click away without worry.

A train ticket

With one of the best train networks in the world, excellent overnight services and countryside galore, rail is easily the best way to get around Austria. Thankfully, this is part of the package when you travel with Trafalgar.

Antihistamines

A trip surrounded by lush countryside means the possibility of pollen. Make sure you have some antihistamine tablets on hand incase your outdoor adventures induce allergies.

Chances are you’ll be enjoying a substantial serving of the great outdoors on your Austria tour. Protect your eyes from the summer sun and winter snow with some polarized lenses.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Itinerary Map

Day 1: Depart

The main group departs today for Munich, Germany.

Day 2: Munich, Germany

We arrive at Munich airport and meet our driver and guide. We travel to Dachau, a town just outside of Munich. Our visit to the Concentration Camp Memorial includes a film in English, an informative historical account of the camp’s history and plenty of time to walk the grounds on our own. Later, we continue to Munich, Bavaria’s friendly capital city. Our leader acquaints us with the pedestrian zone around the Marienplatz, the main square in front of the new town hall. There is time to do some sightseeing and shopping before checking in at our hotel. Dinner tonight is at a local “bräuhaus” a traditional Munich restaurant/beerhall. Maritim München or similar

Day 3: Munich

Today, we discover other Munich sites by taking a locally guided tour that includes many highlights such as the grounds of Nymphenburg Palace, the elegant Maximillian Straße and the 1972 Olympic Grounds. Our tour ends at the Marienplatz where we watch the Glockenspiel play in the tower of the Neues Rathaus. The rest of the day is ours to shop along the mile-long pedestrian zone, get a bite to eat at the nearby Viktualien Market or visit one of a number of fine museums. Dinner is on our own tonight so some may wish to visit Munich’s Hofbräuhaus for dinner, singing and live entertainment. Maritim München or similar

Day 4: Salzburg, Austria

Our first stop today is in Berchtesgaden, where we don miners’ apparel and descend into a salt mine for an unforgettable tour. Afterwards, we continue to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, a chalet built at the top of the Kehlstein mountain. On a clear day, the site affords beautiful views of the Alps. Next, we travel to Salzburg, Austria, which is famous for being Mozart’s birthplace and the backdrop for “The Sound of Music.” We enjoy some free time to explore the narrow winding streets of the old city before dinner. Hotel Astoria or similar

Day 5: Salzburg

Today a local guide joins us for a walking tour of Salzburg. We see the magnificent Cathedral, the Getreidegasse, the city’s quaint shopping area, a photo stop at Mozart’s birth house and a walkthrough at St. Peter’s Cemetery. After time for lunch, we enjoy an excursion to the Salzkammergut. With its beautiful mountains and alpine lakes, it is an immensely popular vacation destination for many Austrians. After exploring some of the lakes and sites, we return to Salzburg for a treat - dinner and a concert in the Stiftskeller St. Peter! It is the perfect setting to enjoy delicious Austrian food and the music of Mozart. Hotel Astoria or similar

Day 6: Oberammergau Area, Germany

Departing Austria, we return to Germany as we drive through the Bavarian countryside to the Wieskirche. This “Church in the Meadow” is a fine example of Rococo architecture. Next, we take a short drive to Füssen to visit Palace Neuschwanstein. One of three palaces built by Bavaria’s King Ludwig II, Walt Disney used it as the model for his Fantasyland Castle. Finally, we pass by Germany’s highest mountain and arrive in GarmischPartenkirchen, an alpine valley surrounded by the foothills of the alps, for a two-night stay. TBD

Day 7: Oberammergau Area

We enjoy a relaxed morning in Oberammergau, admiring the bright frescoes that adorn many of the homes and businesses, perhaps shopping for a souvenir woodcarving for which the village is famous. After included lunch, we attend Part One of the Passion Play, the legacy of a vow made by the Oberammergauers in 1633 to enact the Passion story. Due to the ravages of the Thirty Years War, the plague had taken its toll in lives. But many of the people were spared, and the following year, 1634, the first Passion Play Salzburg Rothenburg ob der Tauber was performed on a stage set up in the cemetery. After dinner we attend Part Two. TBD

Day 8: Sarnen area, Switzerland

Today’s drive is filled with breathtaking mountain scenery as we travel over mountain passes to the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland. Our first stop is in Vaduz, the capital of the small principality of Liechtenstein. We also spend time in lovely Lucerne to enjoy a late lunch and see the poignant Lion Monument that pays tribute to the Swiss mercenaries who lost their lives defending the kings of France. There is time to explore this beautiful city, including taking a walk across the famous wooden Chapel Bridge, or shopping for Swiss Chocolate, before continuing to our hotel in Sarnen. Grand Hotel Giessbach or similar

Day 9: Sarnen area

This morning we drive to view the Trümmelbachfälle, several waterfalls within a mountain that drain nearby glaciers. The raw power and beauty of the falls have attracted tourists for decades. Afterwards, we take an excursion up into the heart of the Swiss Alps. We start by riding a cogwheel train to the small car-free town of Wengen, where we have some time to explore before taking a gondola up to the ridge of the nearby mountain. From there it’s an easy and leisurely hike to Kleine Scheidegg. Our hike affords breathtaking vistas of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, as well as views of the tiny villages in the valley. At Kleine Scheidegg, we have time for lunch before taking a train down to Grindelwald where there’s an opportunity to shop or simply relax at one of the many outdoor cafés. This evening’s entertainment features a Swiss folklore show at our hotel. Grand Hotel Giessbach or similar

Day 10: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Departing Switzerland, we travel via Lake Constance and southern Bavaria to the medieval walled city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Upon our arrival, we visit St. James Church and see the famous altar created by the renowned woodcarver, Tilman Riemenschneider. The rest of the afternoon is ours to explore the cobblestone streets and ramparts and admire the half-timbered buildings that make us feel as if we have stepped back in time. After dinner, we learn more about life in medieval times as we accompany the night watchman on a guided tour of the town. Akzent Schranne or similar

Day 11: Rüdesheim

Our final day in Europe features a cruise on the mighty Rhine River. We leave Rothenburg and travel to Rüdesheim where we board a boat and enjoy time on one of Europe’s most important waterways. Along the way, we hear about the history of the many castle ruins and vineyards that dot the hillside along the river. After our cruise, we transfer to our hotel and have some time for last minute shopping in the Getreidegasse before dinner. Tonight, we celebrate our last evening in Europe with a farewell dinner and a tasting of the region’s fine Rhine wines. Ringhotel Central or similar

Day 12: Return

Sadly, we say “Auf Wiedersehen” to Europe as we transfer to the Frankfurt Airport for our return flight to the United States. We take with us memories of exciting cities, peaceful villages, great entertainment, and beautiful, unforgettable scenery.
