A Netflix Shark Attack Movie Is Swimming Through the Top 10

Zack snyder's rebel moon director's cut sets august release with two new titles, austin butler speaks out on pirates of the caribbean reboot rumors.

Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks! That's the sound of Beckett Mariner, played by Tawny Newsome, celebrating IDW Publishing's most recent announcement. First rumored in October 2021 , after Star Trek: Lower Decks series creator Mike McMahan hinted on Twitter that fans would eventually see a continuation of the California class crew's stories on the comic book page, IDW officially announced that the Lower Deckers are making their comic book debut in a new series from writer Ryan North ( The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl , Adventure Time ) and artist Chris Fenoglio ( Goosebumps , X-Files ).

Over the course of the first two seasons of Lower Decks , the series has shown Trekkies a side of Starfleet that's rarely been seen before. Unlike the galaxy-ending missions of the USS Enterprise , the USS Cerritos is sent on missions that Starfleet deems a lower priority (like second contact missions). But instead of focusing on the Cerritos ' bridge crew, the series focuses on the wacky antics of the ensigns who perform most of the starship's support functions (like dealing with killer plants).

The official synopsis for IDW's Lower Deck series reads:

Soon after leading her crew on a planetary expedition aimed at building bridges and advancing Federation technology, Captain Freeman begins to suspect that the planet and its people are not all what they seem... Meanwhile, the crew in the lower decks take to the holodeck, enjoying some much-needed recreational time-until a bloodthirsty visitor decides to join in on their games!

The Star Trek: Lower Decks comic series from IDW begins on September 14th, 2022.

Mike McMahan Hopes the Lower Decks Comics Mirror Rick and Morty's Success

McMahan told Geek Girl Authority that he hoped the comic series and show could work in tandem, like the comic book adaptations of Rick and Morty . He said:

What I love about this stuff is you watch the show, and then between seasons, you get a new story that builds out the world even more. So that would be my favorite way to do it. But we’re still going slow because we’ve only aired two seasons. I was on Rick and Morty when they started making the comics, and that was always a blast because it was like, “Oh, look, here’s a whole different take on Rick and Morty .” I love that stuff.

Indeed, the comic book series appears to be building the Lower Decks world onscreen, with part of the story taking place on the ship's holodeck. Some of the best episodes of Lower Decks take place on a holodeck, like "No Small Parts," starring the murderous holographic Starfleet comm badge, Badgey, or "Crisis Point," starring a murderous Mariner. So it will be exciting to see if either of these bloodthirsty characters will be the one crashing the Lower Deckers shore leave.

Star Trek: Lower Decks gets release date, Strange New Worlds gets a... musical?

During the long-running Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic Con 2023, fans heard what's coming to Paramount+ in the near future

'Memorable' is perhaps too soft a word to use to describe this year's Star Trek Universe. The annual panel made its 11th annual appearance at San Diego Comic Con 2023, and the announcements were more stunning than your average phaser .

Let's start with Lower Decks. The animated comedy set on the Enterprise is a masssive hit among fans, who have been waiting for a season four release date since the third season dropped in August of 2022. Now we have a date, and more than that, a direction.

Lower Decks Season 4 will officially begin streaming on Paramount+ on September 7, 2023. Along with a date and a new poster (see below), the creators revealed what inspired the upcoming season.

According to film critic and Star Trek fanatic Scott Mantz, the new chapter will be an homage to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The poster he showed Hall H is a pretty spot-on confirmation of just that.

star trek lower decks comic release date

But there was still more news to come form the STU panel; news surprising enough to have any fan singing and dancing for joy.

Mantz moved on from Lower Decks to start talking about Strange New Worlds, the third season of which airs August 3. Besides the release date, though, there was a different, perhaps even bigger, announcement about the show Mantz could share. Episode nine of the third season, appropriately titled Subspace Rhapsody, will be a musical.

Yes, you read that correctly. Star Trek is getting an in-canon musical episode. Weird Al, rejoice.

SDCC-goers were treated to a clip of that episode, but unfortunately, it does not appear to be online at this time. We'll let you know as soon as it shows up, and in the meantime, we'll join you in your white-hot jealousy.

Popverse saw it and did most of it, and you can find all about our guide to All the big news, magic, and moments from San Diego Comic-Con . And if you want to go to SDCC next year, we have the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 dates as well.

An offical Star Trek musical is new, but fans have been putting together their own for a while. In fact, the long running USS Improvise comedy troupe has been singing, dancing, and beaming for a while now. You can watch USS Improvise's performance from Emerald City Comic Con 2023 in full right here.

When To Watch ‘The Chosen' Season 4 Episode 4 on TV and Streaming

'the acolyte' breaks george lucas' strange rule about wookiees, the 10 best characters from 'the legend of vox machina,' ranked.

With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds having had its Season 1 finale last week, this is the first week since February that we've not had a new episode of Star Trek to watch tomorrow. But never fear! Paramount+ has just revealed the release date, and a shiny new poster, for Season 3 of the hit animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks . Following the previous release date patterns of the live-action shows, Lower Decks will return on August 25 with 10 episodes airing weekly on Thursdays on Paramount+.

Along with the release date, Paramount+ also unveiled a new poster for the comedy's third season featuring a startling image of Ensign Rutherford's head shining blue and pink light through the galaxy. Below Rutherford stands our rowdy group of lower deckers with Beckett Mariner front and center, flanked by Ensign Tendi and Brad Boimler. Above everything, the USS Cerritos appears to be going head to head with a Klingon Bird of Prey. The new poster gives off Star Trek: The Next Generation energy mixed with a hint of Star Trek: The Motion Picture . The composition of the poster harkens back to that first original movie, while the image of Rutherford feels akin to the TNG episode "The Nth Degree" where Reginald Barclay essentially interfaces with the computer. This could indicate that something's up with Rutherford's cybernetic implant — he's currently on his second, having lost a significant portion of his memories.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an irreverent and hilarious adventure into the world of Star Trek , giving fans an opportunity to explore this vast franchise through the oft-overlooked lens of humor. While the live-action shows take us on wild space adventures through the eyes of the bridge crew, Lower Decks takes us all the way down to the bottom of the chain of command, giving us the hilarious hijinks seen exclusively by ensigns and cadets. Beckett, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford will be sure to put a smile on your face as they wrestle with all the challenges that come with being "lower deckers."

The best Trek is back

(L to R) Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, and Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford, are covered in slime in STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS.

One of the best Star Trek shows is back when you watch Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 online. Yes, the Paramount Plus animated series has taken the title of Number 1 (but not reporting to any captain), to many a fan, and it returns to keep that ranking.

But after our heroes on the Cerritos saved the Archimedes, Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) was placed under arrest. How will she manage to clear her name from accusations of colluding with Klingons? It seems like her daughter Mariner (Tawny Newsome) is using this opportunity to try and be a bit cooler.

All in all, it feels like this new season of Lower Decks looks to be a winner with the same formula that made past seasons work: with funny adventures that lovingly make fun of past Treks.

Yes, even though its whole premise is built around jokes about all things Star Trek, Lower Decks is also telling solid stories and using comedy to breathe new life into the Trek world with its irreverent tone. Who knew that a sitcom template could feel so fresh?

How Long It Would Take To Watch All of Star Trek (Yes, ALL of It)

Over the five decades since its inception, the Star Trek universe continues to inspire new generations of Trekkies. The original series that began in the mid-1960s has spawned countless spinoffs in television shows, as well as animation and feature films, some of which are still under production.

Someone new to this massive franchise may be wondering just how long it will take to watch all of Star Trek. With so many series and films in the catalog, catching up on everything may seem like a daunting task. Even some diehard fans have no idea just how many episodes of Star Trek there are. This list will divide the franchise into different categories to show just how long it takes to watch them. This way, consuming the entire Star Trek saga won't seem so intimidating after all.

Updated by Robert Vaux on June 8, 2024: Star Trek stands at something of a crossroads with Discovery finishing its five-season run and Lower Decks preparing for its fifth and final season. Despite that, the franchise has a very bright future, with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds carrying the banner forward and projects like Star Trek: Section 31 in active production. The article has been updated to include information on ongoing Star Trek series, as well as new details on all of the entries in the franchise.

13 The Original Series Introduces Viewers to the Cast and Universe of Star Trek

Every star trek role played by clint howard, from tos to discovery.

Although Clint Howard has played four different roles across four eras of Star Trek, he's also the only actor to be on both TOS and Discovery to date.

For a series with so much significance in television and pop culture history, it's surprising to find out that Star Trek: The Original Series lasted for just 79 episodes over three seasons. Ironically, that's shorter than the "five-year mission" it touts in its opening credits. That was enough for it to enter syndication, however, which is where the bulk of its fans first discovered it.

Each TOS episode lasts around 50 minutes for a total of 3,950 minutes, meaning it will take just under 66 hours to watch them all uninterrupted. In other words, The Original Series can be finished in less than a week with constant binging. Even those who don't have that much time can finish watching the show in under a month by screening 2–3 episodes an evening. Unlike most subsequent Star Trek series, TOS episodes are designed to be interchangeable, so switching the viewing order won't disrupt any larger plot threads.

Star Trek: The Original Series

In the 23rd Century, Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise explore the galaxy and defend the United Federation of Planets.

12 The Next Generation Found an Audience Starved for Science Fiction

Star Trek: The Next Generation was so successful during its seven-season run that it's arguably more popular today than The Original Series . It successfully released the series from covering the exploits of just one crew, and cemented the formula that every Star Trek series since then has followed. The Next Generation 's episode count topped its predecessor by almost a hundred for a total of 178 episodes, each with an approximately 44-minute runtime.

That adds up to a series total of 7,832 minutes or 130.5 hours — just under five and half days . If the viewer is free from work for about two weeks, The Next Generation series can be completed with ease. While it adopts a more formal structure than TOS -- with the characters advancing in age and experience from season to season -- most of its episodes are either stand-alone, or one of a two-part arc, making them very easy to enjoy in small 1-2 episode doses.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Set almost 100 years after Captain Kirk's 5-year mission, a new generation of Starfleet officers sets off in the U.S.S. Enterprise-D on its own mission to go where no one has gone before.

11 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Proved There Was Room for Multiple Star Trek Series

How star trek: discovery's trill story connects to dax on deep space nine.

Star Trek: Discovery returned to the Trill home world in Season 5 for a mission with a symbiont host that connects to Jadzia Dax on Deep Space Nine.

Near the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's run, Paramount created another series that could run alongside it. The new series broke from Star Trek tradition by being set on a space station, Deep Space 9, that connected the Federation to the Milky Way galaxy. It explored the darker side of the Final Frontier, culminating in the terrible threat of the Dominion War that forced the entire Alpha Quadrant to stand together.

Another breakout success, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ran for another seven seasons from 1993 to 1999. Those seven seasons, comprise 176 episodes, each running an average 45 minutes. That's a grand total of 7920 minutes or exactly 132 hours. People willing to watch five episodes a night could likely finish it within a month's time. Deep Space Nine was the first Star Trek series to embrace longer and more complicated plot arcs. Viewers should be prepared for longer binges, or else break big story lines down into multiple viewing sessions.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

In the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to the far side of the galaxy.

10 Star Trek Voyager Continued To Break From Traditions

Star Trek: Voyager took over after Star Trek: The Next Generation ended, ensuring there were still two Star Trek series on the air. The series went back to setting the series on the starship Voyager. T he Voyager is run by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew,) the franchise's first female lead , who aims to get her people home after being stranded. It took big risks on wild story lines, resulting in some of the saga's best episodes as well as its most bizarre.

Star Trek Voyager was another success for Paramount and their new network UPN, running for seven seasons. Like the prior show, each episode ran 45 minutes. At 172 episodes, that places the full series runtime at 7,740 minutes or 129 hours. This is another series that would require roughly a month of binging to get through. Its format is reasonably loose, however, and individual episodes can be readily watched without having to commit to anything more in a single viewing.

Star Trek Voyager

Pulled to the far side of the galaxy, where the Federation is seventy-five years away at maximum warp speed, a Starfleet ship must cooperate with Maquis rebels to find a way home.

9 Star Trek: Enterprise Is Star Trek's Last TV Series for Over a Decade

After running multiple Star Trek television series throughout the '90s, the franchise was gradually beginning to cool off. Finally, Paramount launched one more series, Star Trek: Enterprise . Unlike the others, Enterprise was intended as a prequel even to the original series. It followed Earth's first attempt at trying to make First Contact with other alien races. Led by Scott Bakula's Captain Archer, the first U.S.S. Enterprise paved the way for the founding of the United Federation of Planets.

Star Trek: Enterprise didn't quite have the same popularity that the other series did, and was hobbled by behind-the-scenes developments that had little to do with the show itself. Instead, it ran for four seasons and only 98 episodes. At 42 minutes an episode, that adds up to 4116 minutes, or 68.6 hours. That means it can be viewed in less time than the previous three Star Trek series, though it makes use of longer plot threads, and fans may need to plan for longer binges to get through them.

Star Trek: Enterprise

A century before Captain Kirk's five-year mission, Jonathan Archer captains the United Earth ship Enterprise during the early years of Starfleet, leading up to the Earth-Romulan War and the formation of the Federation.

8 Short Treks Offers Mini Side Stories

Some stories within the Star Trek universe don't need a full forty or fifty minutes to reach a satisfying conclusion. With that in mind, Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman launched Star Trek: Short Treks . Running alongside Star Trek: Discovery , Short Treks gives viewers a chance for smaller stories to check out.

The project began back in 2018 with a season of four episodes, while a second season launched a year later with six episodes. The shows run from 8 to 18 minutes, and with only ten episodes, there are only 150 minutes so far . Fans can check that out in a single weekend. They're designed for easy single viewing sessions as well, and can even be added as riders to episodes of Discovery .

7 Star Trek: Picard Revisits Many of the Ideas From TNG

After years of fans watching stories about new characters, the new era of Star Trek finally decided to revisit an older era. In 2020, Star Trek: Picard decided to tell the first new story with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard since the Star Trek: The Next Generation films. Initially, Picard worked with a new cast that wasn't connected to the original series, but across the show, more of the classic characters were gradually added back in.

Star Trek: Picard ran for three seasons from 2020 to 2023, with ten episodes in each season for a total of thirty episodes. Episode lengths varied wildly since the series was on CBS All Access and could go from 39 minutes to 62 minutes. The full minute count, though, is 1350 minutes, or 22.5 hours. That's basically one solid weekend of marathoning or a week of leisurely watching episodes. Like Star Trek: Discovery , each season of Picard is based around a single large story line: allowing for single-season binges of about 10 hours apiece.

Star Trek: Picard

Follow-up series to Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) that centers on Jean-Luc Picard in the next chapter of his life.

6 Animated Star Trek Series Have Become an Important Part of Star Trek

'hopefully we find a new home': jack quaid reacts to star trek: lower decks ending at paramount+.

Star Trek: Lower Decks' Jack Quaid laments the show ending while deeming himself "unbelievably grateful" for the chance to star in this world.

Star Trek: The Animated Series only lasted for two seasons in the early 1970s, releasing 22 episodes that were each 24 minutes long. Franchise creator Gene Roddenberry initially disowned the series -- making it hard to find for many years -- though it has since rejoined canon and now serves as the de facto fourth and fifth years of the original Enterprise's five-year mission. The Animated Series is only 528 minutes long or just under 9 hours. The whole series can be watched in just a single day, and individual episodes can be viewed as riders alongside TOS episodes.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered its first season in 2020 with 10 episodes. Each episode is 25 minutes long, totaling 250 minutes, meaning that the entire first season can be watched in just over four hours. Seasons 2 through 4 of Lower Decks also have 10 episodes each, making the total runtime around 1000 minutes. A final fifth season is planned, which will likely bring the total runtime up to around 1250 minutes or so. In addition, Very Short Treks is the most recent animated Star Trek series with five episodes, each running about 10-15 minutes long. All three animated series combined would take just under 1600 minutes or just under 27 hours.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, have to keep up with their duties, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

5 Currently Active Star Trek Series Continue To Expand Star Trek's Universe

At present, there are only three Star Trek series that are still running: Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Prodigy , and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . The first season of Prodigy is already out: 20 episodes amounting to a total of 480 minutes or 8 hours. A second (and presumably final) season is due in the summer of 2024, with another 20 episodes and another 480 minutes assumed in totem. That will boost the screening time for the entire series to 16 hours, or a single long day of binging.

Star Trek: Discovery has just completed its fifth and final season, leaving 65 episodes in its count with a total running time of 3,138 minutes or 52.3 hours . Episode lengths vary widely, as is typical in the streaming era, but average about 45 minutes apiece. Discovery uses season-long plot arcs the same way Picard does (it was originally conceived as an anthology series), and viewers who wish can comfortably binge a single season in a single day's viewing without trouble.

Finally, Strange New Worlds has two seasons with ten episodes in each, running a total of 1,082 minutes or a touch over 18 hours . That's short enough for a single-day binge. (A third season is on the way, which will add about another 9 hours to the total running time once complete.) Strange New Worlds emphasizes stand-alone episodes, making it very good for short viewing sessions of one or two episodes apiece.

4 star trek: tos films gave the original series cast a comeback.

Ten years following the end of The Original Series , the adventures of Captain Kirk continued on the big screen. The TOS movies proved to be vital parts of the franchise, including such key moments as the death (and resurrection) of Mr. Spock and the original cast's formal good-bye at the end of the six-movie run.

Running times reflect the theatrical release of each movie, and may extend slightly, depending on whether any extended or alternate cuts are being viewed. Star Trek: The Motion Picture has a run time of 132 minutes. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , universally considered the best film in the franchise, is 113 minutes long. The Leonard Nimoy-directed Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is 105 minutes, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is 122 minutes. William Shatner's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is 106 minutes, and Nicholas Meyer's The Undiscovered Country has a 110-minute running time. Overall, the original film series clocks in at a total of 688 minutes, which equals 11 hours and 28 minutes.

3 Star Trek: TNG Movies Offer a Sense of Scale to the New Era

The Next Generation did not have the same big-screen success as the original series but made four films following the end of the show. The first film, Star Trek Generations , featured both Picard and Kirk and is 118 minutes long. The best-reviewed of the films, Star Trek: First Contact , clocks in at 111 minutes, Star Trek: Insurrection is shorter at 103 minutes, and the last film, Star Trek: Nemesis , is 116 minutes long.

The four Next Generation films combined run at a total of 448 minutes, equaling 7 hours and 28 minutes. Binging all four movies can be done within the span of a single day, though their varying quality may induce some viewers to break them down into shorter viewing periods.

2 The Kelvin Timeline Movie Series Press the Reset Button on the Series

Star trek is getting a kelvinverse origin, but why are fans skeptical.

Star Wars veteran Simon Kinberg has been added to an upcoming origin movie for Star Trek and the Kelvin Timeline universe, but fans aren't pleased.

The most recent movie series, known as The Kelvin Timeline films, takes place in an alternate reality featuring the crew from The Original Series. It was created when Spock attempted to stop the Romulan sun from going supernova and exists in a parallel-but-separate timeline from the rest of the series. It's credited with keeping the franchise going during the extended gap in TV series between the end of Star Trek: Enterprise and the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery .

The Kelvin movie franchise consists of three films, with each film varying in length. 2009's Star Trek runs 127 minutes, the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness is just five minutes longer at 132, and the latest film, Star Trek Beyond , is actually the shortest at 122 minutes. The film trilogy totals 381 minutes, or 6 hours and 21 minutes. New Trekkies can finish this trilogy very quickly.

In the latest TV Legends Revealed, learn what Gene Roddenberry's plans were on having LGBTQ+ characters on the original Star Trek series

All 13 Star Trek films have a combined total of 25 hours and 28 minutes, or just over a full day. Every single television series, both currently airing and retired, totals up to around 48,700 minutes, which is approximately 812 hours or 33.8 days. Every series and movie combined totals 837.5 hours, meaning it will take 34.9 days to watch them all uninterrupted.

Obviously, watching them all consecutively is impossible, but realistically, watching everything in the Star Trek franchise could take less than half a year. This doesn't even include upcoming movies like Star Trek 4 and new seasons for existing series. For those who believe this beloved universe is worth investing over 50,200 minutes, it's time to boldly go where only die-hard Trekkies have gone before.

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek’s rest of 2024 is all animation - that’s good (& bad), star trek officially confirms [spoiler] is a scotty-level engineer.

  • Star Trek: Discovery paved the way for an era of new Star Trek shows on Paramount+ with its success.
  • Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 offer exciting new perspectives and adventures.
  • The future of Star Trek includes a mix of series and movies, with upcoming projects showcasing diverse storytelling.

Star Trek: Discovery is over, but I'm excited for what's coming up for Star Trek . Star Trek: Discovery kicked off a new golden age for Star Trek on Paramount+. After no new Star Trek TV shows for 12 years, Star Trek: Discovery 's success led to Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy , and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . In 2022, there was a new episode of Star Trek streaming on Paramount+ almost every Thursday. With Star Trek: Discovery concluded and Star Trek: Lower Decks ' upcoming season 5 set to also be its final season, there will be less new Star Trek on TV, but there's still a great deal of good stuff to look forward to.

Star Trek is, undoubtedly, in a state of transition, which is a result of the uncertainty surrounding the movie and TV industries. The streaming business is changing, while Paramount, which owns Star Trek , is reportedly being sold to Skydance Media. Although Skydance, which co-produced J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond , looks to be friendly toward Star Trek as an IP and franchise, it does seem like Star Trek is on the wane with Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Discovery, and Star Trek: Lower Decks finished or about to be. Yet there is still new Star Trek being produced and in the development stages, and what's still to come has exciting possibilities.

Alex Kurtzman and his Secret Hideout production company oversee all of Star Trek on Paramount+, while X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is in talks to oversee the Star Trek theatrical feature films made by Paramount Pictures.

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

Star Trek Has Exciting New Seasons & New Shows On The Way

Star trek will keep taking big swings.

After Star Trek: Lower Decks ends, the remaining Star Trek on Paramount+ series will be Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , which are both spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery. Strange New Worlds is already a hit with audiences and a critical darling, and the USS Enterprise-set series has already delivered classic episodes like Star Trek 's first-ever musical and a comedy crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Strange New Worlds season 3 has wrapped filming, and its contents are top-secret. Strange New Worlds is my favorite Star Trek on Paramount+ series, and I'm dying to see season 3's new episodes. It's safe to expect the same level of "big swings" as in previous seasons. Best of all, Strange New Worlds season 4 is already greenlit to film in spring 2025, so its immediate future is assured.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the next new Star Trek series, which begins production in fall 2024, and essentially follows up the events of Star Trek: Discovery . Starfleet Academy is the first young adult-aimed Star Trek series, but it's also the first to delve into what life is like for cadets hopeful of a career in Starfleet. Starfleet Academy offers an intriguing new perspective that will look at Star Trek through younger eyes , and it will hopefully bring a new and younger audience to Star Trek . Other cool things about Starfleet Academy are that it will be set in both San Francisco and outer space, and the show stars Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter as the Academy Chancellor. Starfleet Academy will also be a visual feast since it will film on the largest set ever constructed for Star Trek.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will also have humor, with Star Trek: Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome as one of the show's writers.

Possibly the upcoming Star Trek series with the most unlimited possibilities is Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 on Netflix . The next 20 episodes of the beloved, all-ages CGI animated series premiere July 1st, and Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 promises an epic intergalactic adventure involving time travel, alternate timelines, and tie-ins to every prior iteration of Star Trek . Star Trek: Voyager is especially a focus of Star Trek: Prodigy , which features the return of The Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the launching of the new Lamarr Class USS Voyager-A. Star Trek: Prodigy is perhaps the purest Star Trek of all, and it might be the grandest voyage the franchise has coming in the next few years.

It's impossible to predict what we'll get from any of the series besides excellent Star Trek at their core.

Regrettably, it's coming to an end, but the irrepressible Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is still going to deliver 10 new episodes that may even surpass the sensational prior seasons. Star Trek: Lower Decks has created some of the most endearing new Star Trek characters in years, led by Tawny Newsome's Lt. Beckett Mariner and Jack Quaid's Lt. Brad Boimler, and the USS Cerritos has become a celebration of the best (and most obscure) of Star Trek. Lower Decks proved Star Trek can be incredibly funny, and it's bound to go out with a bang. Best of all, Star Trek on Paramount+'s series are so varied and multidimensional that it's impossible to predict what we'll get from any of the series besides excellent Star Trek at their core.

Star Trek Movies Are Coming Back

In theaters and on streaming.

After nearly a decade since Star Trek Beyond, I'm optimistic that Star Trek movies are finally coming back. Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, launches Star Trek 's movies made for streaming on Paramount+ initiative, and the inside word is it's a very different type of Star Trek . I always enjoy when Star Trek takes chances, even if they don't always work, but the already announced tie-in to Star Trek 's lost era and meeting legacy characters like the young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl) sounds exciting. So does the return of Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, one of the most fascinating characters Star Trek: Discovery ever introduced. If Section 31 is a hit, it opens the door to numerous possibilities for Star Trek streaming movies.

While I don't know what to make about Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin movie , or how it will slot in (but hopefully not reboot) the Star Trek movie timeline, a new Star Trek movie finally hitting theaters is a win in and of itself. Meanwhile, the prospect of Star Trek 4 has become a running joke for years, but I'll certainly be there on opening night if Chris Pine's Captain Kirk reunites with the USS Enterprise crew on the big screen. I feel Star Trek works and thrives best on television, but Star Trek movies are a fun, and often influential, compliment to the TV franchise. Overall, while Star Trek is reducing the number of series on Paramount+, we're going to see an expansion of different types of Star Trek across TV and movies going into Star Trek 's 60th anniversary in 2026 - and that's exciting.

‘Star Trek: Section 31’ Actor Teases His “Very Intense” Character, Praises “Hero” Michelle Yeoh

The next live action Star Trek release may be the Section 31 streaming movie. We still don’t know much about the project starring Michelle Yeoh, but now one of the new actors is teasing a bit about his character.

A broken soul in Section 31

James Hiroyuki Liao was one of the seven actors announced as part of the cast of Star Trek: Section 31 in January, but with no character descriptions. He is out doing publicity now for a role in the new Apple limited series Presumed Innocent and ScreenRant used the opportunity to talk about Trek. Liao was hesitant to say anything specific but did tease his character:

All I can say is that my guy is very, very intense. Without giving anything away, he’s a broken soul, and hurt people hurt people.

It sounds like Liao could be playing a bad guy, which there should be plenty of in a streaming movie about Starfleet’s infamous Section 31 organization. The film stars Academy-award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, reprising her Discovery role as former Terran Emperor turned Section 31 operative Phillipa Georgiou. The official synopsis notes how she is tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets,” but she “also must face the sins of her past.” Perhaps Liao’s character is related to some of those past sins.

The actor did talk about what it  was like to work with Yeoh, saying:

He’s maybe one of the greatest characters I’ve had the chance to play, and working with my hero [Michelle Yeoh] for such a long time has just been an insane time for me. I’m working with so many people that I have admired for so long. Michelle Yeoh is just everything, and I loved working with her. It was such a special cast as well. I’ve been on cloud nine. I’m so lucky.

Liao is a Juilliard-trained actor with a long resume in Hollywood. He has recently appeared in HBO’s Barry and the Hulu limited series The Dropout . He has had a recurring role in the long-running CBS series Blue Bloods and is a series regular in the upcoming AMC show Orphan Black: Echoes .

Besides Yeoh’s Georgiou, we do know the Section 31 movie will include a younger Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C from the TNG episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” indicating the streaming movie could be set in the “ lost era ” between the TOS movies and TNG era. The one official photo from the movie also reveals the back of the head of a new character named Dada Noe (Joe Pingue).

‘Section 31’ Movie Director Says It’s A “Different” Star Trek + New Character Details Revealed

Imagine if they also brought back Ruck as Captain Harriman from Generations…

That would be very cool for this aging Trekker.

He won’t be made admiral until Tuesday.

He’d be an Admiral of course by then. Maybe in the sequel, Section 32.

Don’t worry, knowing these writers, he’ll show up, especially since he’s not developed as a character.

which means they’ll be killing him off! oh no!

back by tuesday….

The other day I wondered to myself, what will real fans hate now that Discovery is over. This is likely to be that.

There is no doubt that this movie will commit the same “sins” the first season of Discovery did, such as having more advanced technology that what was portrayed in The Original Series and, more likely than not, redesign an alien species or more like they did with the Klingons.

If S31 has:

  • awful writing
  • awful characters
  • awful pacing, plot contrivances and unearned emotion

like Discovery, then fans will dislike it, like Discovery.

And I generally liked the last season but those problems still persisted regardless.

That ending ruined what was otherwise, a fairly compelling season.

Yes. Yes indeed, Harry.

Any excuse to dump on the show, huh? That said… I’ll quite happily trash Enterprise to this day so I can’t talk!

Even season 4?

Even season 4.

It’s an improvement for sure, but its still woeful imo.

The OP’s post was baiting so I can’t fault anyone for their responses beyond a lack of self-restraint. I’m disappointed the opposing POV is so narrow and unwilling to engage, but now that I see it that’s a lesson for next time.

100%. They have an opportunity to give us a fun little romp, with a minimum of canon connections. This feels like the kind of thing they can just run with at this point, and not screw it up.. even if it’s a little hammy or silly. But who knows.

Absent context, a brilliant observation. Meanwhile, with actual context, the folks who spent years taking a s**t on Discovery had pretty much decided it was garbage long before the first season aired. They also tend to be the same people who worshipped PS3, an abysmal story, but very well produced fan service. Insisting the only thing the fan base wants now is the further adventures of Nepo Jack and his TNG Guest Star Friends.

So there’s that….

Yes, 100%. You hit the nail on the head.

Discovery’s actual sins centered on its character work and dramatic fundamentals, which is legitimately a serious problem. I couldn’t give a toss about the things you’re talking about beyond being mildly irritated the Klingon actors could barely speak through those teeth, and I thought it was a bit unnecessary to shoehorn Burnham into Spock’s family.

No, what I had a hard time with was how Burnham’s redemption arc was messy and didn’t feel earned in season 1. Also, the tone was all over the place. The execution of the plan to go to the not-much-darker-because-Klingon-War Mirror Universe was uneven. The Klingon characters weren’t all that interesting. The decision to make the show so dark and TV-MA with gore and sexual violence was baffling. The VFX were high-end yet murky. Having all the comic relief fall on Tilly’s shoulders was a mistake as well.

It was still enjoyable by and large. There was good acting, the production values were impressive, the LGBT+ representation was aspirational (though I still question what the longterm plan was for Culber after his offing), and the show was definitely trying something bold and new. It was working against deadline headwinds and creative upheavals in seasons 1 and 2, but even with them being all over the place I still preferred what they were doing to Michelle Paradise’s vision.

But for the fact that The Original Series did a throwaway episode in which Shatner played Kirk’s brother wearing nothing more than a fake mustache glued to his upper lip, real fans would demand Kurtzman’s head on a platter for introducing Kirk’s brother in Strange New Worlds.

Likewise, but for the fact that Trek V introduced Sybok, they would be just as upset that “Spock’s brother” was at the center of a season one episode even if their familiar connection wasn’t entirely mentioned.

There was nothing wrong with Burnham being Spock’s sister. He didn’t mention her in TOS just like he didn’t mention Sybok in TOS either. And just like he didn’t say that the Vulcan ambassador was his father. He didn’t tell his crewmates anything about his family until they met them.

These have been argued to death at this point. I don’t understand why people keep bringing up Sybok as an argument to why it’s OK for Michael to be Spocks sibling when most fans hated Sybok just as much at the time. Its not like the character was beloved, people thought it was a bad idea including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy BTW. It was Harve Bennett who pushed for the idea and it went over like a lead balloon.

But let’s double down one bad idea and do it again. Makes total sense.

The whole “Spock doesn’t talk about his family” bit has been torpedoed into oblivion ironically thanks to DIS and SNW. Spock tells anyone within earshot about his family these days. Pike knew about Burnham before he showed up on Discovery. He mentioned to Chapel about Sybok which seems to imply he will eventually show up on SNW while Kirk, Uhura and now Scotty will most likely be around. But maybe he won’t show up. But his mother already has showed up on the Enterprise along with T’Pring for his freaking engagement party. But now a few years later both will be completely forgotten and has turned continuity into more of a joke. 🙄

This entire conversation is why I hate prequels. Honestly. But this should also make clear it’s not Discovery alone with these issues. SNW is just aa bad as my opinion. But it gets less slack because people like it more.

And I have made clear I really like SNW but I’m not biased either.

The thing about Spock’s family – or any crewmember’s family – is that there is no way there are any believable surprises.

No way Kirk wouldn’t know his first officer was the son of an ambassador. No way he wouldn’t know Spock had a half brother or that his parents “adopted” a girl from Earth. No way people on Enterprise would have no idea Kirk had a brother.

In the future eveyone will know a lot about each other – unless – there is a story which explains why they don’t.

Well said, and I agree. So much of Disco and SNW seem predicated on ‘well, they made a creative decision like the ones we did in TOS.. or the movies, so that means we can do that too’. Ironically..it just shows a general lack of originality.

The Sybok revelation was eye-rolling then too, but please, by all means only focus on the one continuity thing I said was “a bit unnecessary.” You’re doing well, and not coming across as silly at all.

Um Kirk’s brother is on Strange New Worlds.

Which doesn’t bother anyone because he was previously introduced in TOS played by Shatner wearing a fake mustache.

If they had introduced him now as an entirely new character, the “real” fans would be up in arms like they were about Michael. “HOW DARE THEY SAY THAT KIRK HAS A BROTHER?!”

Again with the “real” fans comment. Dude, real fans have no issue with any of that.

I have my issues with Discovery but none are the issues you mentioned.

Well, since there are no such things as “real” fans, I’m not worried.

Thank you for that. Fans are fans.

The hate is already starting for the Academy series, so I expect full on hate once it starts. It’s like certain “fans” are in pre-hate mode.

How about we all leave the hating and the preemptive hating of hating and speculation on what haters are going to hate, and just wait for something to actually happen? Musing on what could happen in the movie or SFA makes sense, but the rest feels utterly pointless.

You’re a little late with your message… people started on the hate parade when the show was announced and have been hating on it ever since. I, for one, would rather wait and see the show first.

Me too, so there’s no point in intensifying the debate. Simply saying there’s nothing to comment on to inspire such strong feelings is more productive than twisting to get ahead of what people may or may not hate later and have limited cause to hate now. I don’t see the point of any of it until we get substantive interviews, trailers, clips and actual airings.

You’re preaching to the choir, bud. You need to tell that to the haters.

I think you have things the other way around. Real fans have enjoyed what has come after TOS and TNG. The bandwagon Trekkers have THEIR show, and anything that isn’t it, sucks. As a real fan, I love all Trek. I do love to see what different people see Trek as. I do have what I like better and what I like less… but I am happy that there is Trek still going after so long. And for the Trek that I like less… I don’t bash it over and over and over again like the bandwagon fans do.

Nice to get a S31 update. Fingers crossed January 2025 at the latest.

I am VERY excited for this, not just because of the return of the Emperor (all hail!) but also as a test bed for the streaming movie model. I get the feeling if S31 rates well enough Paramount are keen to test out new ideas as streaming movie first moving forward. And the “lost era/tos movie era” is probably my favourite era aesthetically speaking and I can’t wait to see how they update it for 2024.

I’m also very excited to see how well the streaming movie model does. We might never get a Legacy series, but maybe we can get a Legacy movie. Or maybe we can get a streaming movie about other characters in the Lost Era. Bring it on!

Agreed! I feel like the streaming movie model opens so many fascinating doors. A full series or a theatrical movie are arguably too big to serve as test beds or experimentation, but an ongoing “slot” in the production schedule dedicated to successive streaming films sounds like one hell of a sweeet spot in terms of trying things out as well as exploring corners theatrical films and series wouldn’t have a good chance to dedicate their time to. I’m very very excited about the possibilities of this.

I’m curious about what they’ll do for the uniforms. I know it was a cost-saving measure, but given Starfleet’s obsession with fashion, it’s always been an outlier how they didn’t change their uniforms for 70 years between TWOK and when Picard commanded the Stargazer. Who knew that in the future it will be flared pants that make the biggest comeback?

It’s weird, but what I’m most excited to see is the Monster Maroons, and if they go another route, I’m not going to be happy.
